A History Of Jailbreaking the PS3
Jailbreaking on the Playstation 3 has seen many forms through the years. We have seen
plenty efforts to get a operating Playstation 3 Jailbreak. BlueRay Java was probably the
earliest potential for an exploit. Regrettably not a thing was discovered that allows you to run
back-ups. It was actually at the very same time which Sony added the otherOS function in
order that the PS3 may run Linux An advantage of Linux had been the ability to probe the
PS3 software and firmware. It wasn’t long until Geohot posted "hello hypervisor, im geohot"
to his blog. News hit us that OFW 3.21 would remove otheros! Sony removed otheros swiftly
in a move that many thought at first was an April fools joke With it gone very little progress
was made by the PS3 scene. After receiving the blame for otheros beign removed by sony
Geohot leaves the scene.
With hardly any fan fare just one video clip appeared on you tube showing a brand new PS3
Jailbreak dongle. This was massive news and was front page on the main sites within hours.
News sites called fake on the video at first. but as more information were released it became
clear that this was indeed the real deal. Pre orders for the PSJailbreak dongle were huge.
This meant it would be weeks until some people who had paid could get their dongles
Firmware 3.56 was quickly released by Sony with new Keys. The USB port would now only
work with Sony approved devices. With the USB port now blocked the dongle wouldnt work
on newer firmware. As older games were now all able to be backed up they would need
updates to the newer keys. It meant the end of playing them on PSN though. Many big game
releases for the coming christmas were going to require newer firmware. The first game to
cause real issues was GT5 It required firmware 3.50 to run and this means no dongles could
work.
It took a while to get the game working by patching the eboot but by Christmas it was
payable. By the end of December failoverflow had shown the Key Fail to the world New years
eve and the next day saw the scene light up with the first news of the public keys. Geohot
released his hello world on new years day this was quickly followed by the geohot jailbreak.
This one small pup file patched out the key checks enabling both homebew and PSN access.
Backups were difficult but possible with this jailbreak. More CFW releases followed from the
likes of Keamw and team rebug.
For two months people had backups and playing them online. However of course this brings
the cheats in and cheating got especially bad on MW2 and blackops. Infinity Ward banned a
large number of players from their servers for cheating. It was around this time that unknown
to Sony someone breached their PSN servers. Credit card details were stolen from a
possible 50 million users. After the hack was discovered Sony shut down PSN. Sony took
nearly two months to get PSN back online A new pass key sign on process now prevented
CFW users from accessing PSN. Some people moved to the so called Dev Network for the
online gaming. As new games come out they are uplayable due to firmware restrictions.
2. A split occurs in the scene between the homebrew and 'backups' crew which divides the
scene For some time but the release of the true blue dongle reunites it. This needed their
own eboots to run the backup games. Only Paradox were releasing the Eboots for these
games so some say they were involved with the dongle. Warez group Duplex were the first to
release a whole load of PSN games which were previously encrypted wih newer keys. Many
people began to suspect TrueBLue had access to higher keys than the 3.55 ones everyone
else had, something sort of confirmed a bit later as the 3.60 keys themselves were leaked.
The 3.60 keys didnt however lead to a new firmware as by now the OFW was up to 4.11.
Duplex were the first to crack the drm protection of the trueblue dongle. Very quickly they
started releasing many of the TB eboots to work on any CFW. Promises were made by TB
manufacturers of a dongle update and newer games however nothing has been released so
it would seem at this point that trueblue are dead. Another big development to note is the
new found ability to convert from CEX to DEX. this means running homebrew and backups
without the need for the keys at all. This does have the downside that a debug console can
never connect to PSN. For PSN access and game backups there is only really one option a
jailbreak for firmware 4.21 is needed. That way online gaming is kept as well as the ability to
run the latest games. It should be noted as well that by access to PSN this must still include
the ability to purchase from the store.
