A History Of Jailbreaking the PS3
Jailbreaking of the Playstation 3 has seen many forms over the years. There was quite a few
efforts to achieve a functioning Ps3 Jailbreak. First exploits depended on the integral Java of
BlueRay menus. Java on the blueray was too constrained and just a small buffer overflow
was found. By then the otheros feature was added by Sony to allow Linux on the console
Through the process of running various tools with linux aspects of the PS3 system could be
investigated. It wasn’t long until Geohot posted "hello hypervisor, im geohot" to his blog. The
ps3 scene was outraged with what transpired next! On the 1st April other OS was removed
by Sony “due to security concerns” All hope seemed to be lost and the scene was getting
much quieter again. Geohot claims he is leaving the scene due to getting the blame for the
loss of other os.
With hardly any big press release a single video appeared on you tube showing a brand new
PS3 Jailbreak dongle. News of this spread like wildfire. Many sites were initially claiming it
was a fake. Quickly it became obvious that the dongle and backup manager were genuine.
Even at over 100 dollars all stores received many pre orders. This meant it would be weeks
until some people who had paid would receive their dongles The key problem was fixed with
firmware 3.56 released quickly by Sony This blocked unknown USB devices from working.
This simple move stopped the dongle dead in its tracks. As older games were now all able to
be backed up they would need updates to the newer keys. Without a firmware spoofer it was
not impossible to go online with PSN. With christmas on the way the new rush of game
releases would need updated firmware to play, The first release to cause real issues was
GT5 This required the new higher firmware to run
It wasn’t until nearly Christmas that a way was found to play it on CFW. Of course it turned
out just after that same Xmas that failoverflow cracked the keys Over the next few days new
of the consoles security fail was widespread. The first true PS3 “hello world” released by
Geohot on 1st January Not long after that he released his jailbreak pup. This one small pup
file patched out the key checks enabling both homebew and PSN access. A nice method to
run backups was discovered using this jailbreak. Still the sweetest looking now! A spate of
CFW releases saw many bricks but most settled on the Keamw or Rebug CFW.
A long two months passed with CFW users able to access PSN with no problems. However
of course this brings the cheats in and cheating got especially bad on MW2 and blackops.
Infinity Ward banned a large number of players from their servers for cheating. During this
time a hacker quietly gained access to the PSN account server. Up to 50 million PSN users
had details including credit card information stolen PSN was quickly turned off when news
broke of the hack. Sony took nearly two months to get PSN back online When it returned the
added security meant no more PSN for CFW users. For the average user accessing the
network was too difficult. Newer games started to require higher versions.

2. Once more the PS3 scene started to go into limbo until a new dongle was released by true
blue. This needed their own eboots to run the backup games. Only Paradox were releasing
the Eboots for these games so some say they were involved with the dongle. Warez group
Duplex were the first to release a whole load of PSN games which were previously encrypted
wih newer keys. The exact method TureBlue were using to resign the Eboots could only be
guessed at, that was until the 3.60 keys were leaked by an unknown hacker. Rumors of a
jailbreak for 3.60 OFW circulated along with various youtube videos. It didnt take long though
until Duplex turned their attention to the TB dongle itself. Surprisingly, they succeeded and
then started releasing tb free eboots. TB claimed to be about to release an update for their
dongle with new games so far no updates from them have been made Is this the end of the
trueblue dongle? A way has also been found to turn normal ps3 consoles into debug units.
The wonderful thing about a debug console is it can easily run any homebrew without any
keys at all. This does have the downside that a debug console can never connect to PSN.
From that point of view then its obvious that if you are to keep PSN and backups Firmware
4.21 needs to be jailbroken. This would mean access to all the latest game releases with the
ability to play them online. Full access should also include for the Store and being able to
download and buy things is a must.
