A Definition Of System Services Essay
System services
This chapter contains a definition of system services (SyS) which are both managed and coordinated
by ČEPS.
ČEPS is, according to the Energy Act, responsible for ensuring system services for the power system
at the transmission system level. The system services provided by ČEPS serve to ensure both the
secure and reliable operation of the power system and the quality of electricity transmission and
satisfy the various international obligations set out by the UCTE. ČEPS provides the following system
services:
1) Maintaining the quality of electricity
This service entails the use of the following technical organisational tools: o Management of the
summary power reserve for primary frequency control o Secondary f/P control o Secondary voltage
control o Tertiary voltage control o Ensuring the quality of the voltage sine wave o Ensuring
transmission stability
The criteria for the quality of electricity follow current technical standards V.3.
2) Real time active power balancing
This service requires the use of the following technical organisational tools: o Load frequency control
o Tertiary active power control o Dispatcher reserve
The criteria for evaluating the quality of active power balancing (the control of power interchange at
the planned level) are contained in recommendations provided by the UCTE (Ground rules concerning
primary and secondary control of frequency and active power within the UCPTE) and in the
Catalogue of requirements for

The Dangers of the Trenches Ww1
Introduction The Great War began in 1914 and lasted a gruelling 4 years. During this war, new and
powerful weapons were developed such as machinery, guns and heavy artillery. Soldiers had no choice
but to dig trenches, which were barely sustainable to live in, in order to protect themselves from the
constant enemy gunfire. They lived, ate, slept and fought in these trenches for the whole 4 years... In
this investigation I will thoroughly examine evidence from a whole range of resources to find out the
extent of some of the misery and dangers in the trenches for the British and soldiers in World War One
starting with miseries. Chapter 1 Was Life In The Trenches Miserable? The Food in the Trenches A
huge amount of food was ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
While these soldiers are looking in good health, soldiers often became ill after eating the poorly
prepared food, which may carry parasites from water or unusual ingredients like plant weeds and mud
when rations fell terribly low. Health and Hygiene Soldiers in the trenches face some of the most
unhygienic environments known to man! The extent of the health problems is never fully understood.
This is primarily because they were censored and only the war survivors lived to tell the stories about
the problems. Some of the most obvious problems were the cold, mud and the harsh side effects of
rough sleeping. In winter, warm cups of team would freeze in a couple of minutes even if you took
your boots off! The mud from the poorly made British trenches coated clothing in just a few hours and
was rarely changed, leaving the body to bath in bacterial growth and sweat! In severe cases, one
solider spend 42 days of 1915 without removing his socks and boots. Some soldiers did sometimes do
this intentionally to get out of the front line fighting and even faced trench foot and risk of amputation
to escape the harsh environment. Body Lice One of many problems was body lice infestation within
the trenches which made life extremely difficult! One soldier said they were pale fawn in colour, and
they left blotchy red markings all over the body . They also left a vile smell. They

Song Of Solomon By Toni Morrison
Reyes Luna 1 Song of Solomon Toni Morrison L.A.P. Topic #2 Bairon Reyes Luna Mr. Amoroso Pd.
3 A.P. Literature 10/05/17 Reyes Luna 2 The freedom that awaits in the breezes of the air lures the
appetent soul. It propels many to leap despite the uncertainty of having wings, hopeful that the gusts
of wind would suffice and carry the weight of their lives. An infatuation with the wonders of flight as
a form of escape, is frequently juxtaposed with the desire to fight, choosing confrontation by
remaining on the ground and facing the problems at hand. However, this fight or flight response, as it
has been coined, has become an oversimplification of the way humans react in the face of adversity. It
fails to recognize that paradoxically, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Mr. Smith had seen the rose petals, heard the music, and leaped on into the air Reyes Luna 3
(Morrison 9). He had lived and seen the true colors of the world, heard the voices of those who spoke
and had rejected it, the same way they all had rejected him...and chose flight instead. While bystanders
stood silent and in disbelief, a character is introduced by drawing a parallel with her personality to her
social interactions. Choosing to break the stillness of the happening with song. O Sugarman done fly
away, Sugarman done gone, Sugarman cut across the sky, Sugarman gone home... (Morrison 6). Truly
Mr. Robert had in a distorted way accomplished something, he had gained one way ticket back home.
Paradoxically, the end of his life marked the beginning of a new, as if by design, it was the same day
as Milkman s birth...the last character to take flight. The first manifestation of the metaphor of flight
was as a means of escape from life itself. Arguably, Mr. Smith had given up on the world and felt that
there was only one solution for all his problems, to fly away from them all. However, this merely
showcases the cliché definition of what it means to fly. The next case comes into fruition in the
character of Pilate, who introduces a new elucidation to the metaphor. From the distinctive undertones
that arise from the name alone, Pilate proves to be a character of her own caliber. Different from the

Lolita Pedophile
How do people set up the border between affection and illness? As metaphorically as it may seem,
although people now have clearer understanding of the importance when it comes to mental health,
some of the common conceptual illness such as pedophilia still haunts the society with the confusion
between one s freedom of choice and a disease that can be cured or eased. To grasp the controversy
and the impact of psychology and the society, Lolita is an essential piece of literature that
demonstrates the real life application of an example in mental illness and how the society characterize
the patients that affects the group as a whole. From Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, the theme of mental
illness and social values is introduced in three main aspects: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

The American Psychiatric Association has confirmed the latest corrected information: The new
manual specifies that in order for an atypical sexual behavior to be classified as a mental condition, a
person must: 1. Feel personal distress about their interest, not merely distress resulting from society s
disapproval; or 2. have a sexual desire or behavior that involves another person s psychological
distress... for sexual behaviors involving unwilling persons or persons unable to give legal consent.
(Stuart) In other words, as long as one does not violate others right and does not involves in unwilling
sexual relationship, one should not be considered as a pedophile but a person who has a preferable
sexual orientation. Because this concept released in 2013 has not been widely realized in the society,
the unclear information confuses people with the seemingly abstruse fantasy. In the story Lolita, the
same issue is also being debated: On one hand, the society is aware of the potential crime with
pedophilia and yet regard the hidden danger of mental illness in every individual like Humbert; On the
other hand, people with a particular disapproving sexual orientation is thought to be the scapegoat of
rapists and abusers. This eventually leads the novel to become a controversial work, Is he[Humbert] in
love or insane?

Computer Literacy Personal Statement
I am interested in this position out of the nessicity computer literacy has become for developing youth.
Growing up, I had the privilege to cultivate an interest in computer programming and web
development that I later turned into a certificate in Web Authoring. However, I understand how
traditional literacy in school systems do not always accommodate computer literacy and I would love
to be involved in helping develop that. My experience for this position academically includes courses
in HTML and CSS, as courses in Word Press. In taking these courses I believe I would be best suited
for this position as I appreciate the need for literacy in coding.

Should Sports Players Be Allowed To Draft Players Essay
One question that many people ask is, should pros be allowed to draft players before they graduate,
most people don t agree with this. Although many sports team draft players before they graduate
would it affect the player s future. There are a lot of things that the player should think about, if they
are going to have a good rookie season, should he leave earlier so he doesn t get a career ending
injury, and if their ready for the challenge . The reason why players should get drafted earlier in sports
before they graduate is that they can make some amount of money at a young age, for example if they
had a great rookie season like the football star Odell Beckham they could start to make a lot of money
at a young age, and maybe in the future

Anterograde Amnesia In The Movie 50 First Dates
Anterograde amnesia refers to a memory deficit from brain injury that prevents patients to store new
informations in their short term memories. The patients show normal memories for events that
occurred before the injury but has severely impaired ability to recall information about events that
occurred after the incident. Anterograde amnesia is reflected in the movie 50 first dates through the
main character, Lucy Whitmore, whose memory lasts only a day because her memory stopped on the
day of car accident. (additional description) The movie, 50 first dates, contains valid depiction of
anterograde amnesia yet it also contains some dramatic points that is far from reality. Although the
movie, 50 first dates, was fairly dramatic, it accurately portrays the possible struggles that patients
may experience from anterograde amnesia. The main idea of the movie is that the main character Lucy
gets into a car accident on the day of her father s birthday. The accident causes a severe brain injury to
her temporal lobe and it leads her to suffer from anterograde amnesia. Because memories of any
events occurred after the accident fades away, Lucy wakes up every morning thinking that it is
October 13th, the day of a car accident. Lucy s family helps Lucy to constantly relive the day before
her accident to avoid a pain that Lucy may have as she discovers her condition. On the other hand,
Henry comes into her life thinking that it is better to update her with important events through

Autobiography Of A Homeless Person
In day to day life, an individual will come into contact with countless people who all
have vastly diverse backgrounds. One person may be a renowned surgeon, or you could come
across a homeless man that thinks everyone is trying to harm him in some way or another. The
fact of the matter is that no one has an obvious way of knowing how someone s day has gone, or
what kind of frame of mind they happen to be in at any given moment in time. One might notice
that most people s days are hectic, depressing, or maybe sometimes even a little deplorable.

Erasmus Vs Erasmus
The topic of freedom can mean so many things to every person. Theologists, Calvin and Luther, did
not think human had freedom of choice, only that God had already laid out a plan for us. Erasmus, on
the other hand, disagreed with them and thought that people must have a free will, because God would
not punish us for the sins that he predestined us to do. Unlike in Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism
believe in freedom in a sense that there is freedom after life that cannot truly be explained in words. I
agree with Erasmus in that everyone has free will, but it is the circumstances in which you live that
will help determine the choices you make. Death is also a form of freedom in that there is nothing
beyond death, and it should be seen as a neutral. There are many views of freedom depending on your
view of life, your religion, or how you were raised, and these circumstances give more probability to
certain decisions from the multiple choices always available, but humans also have a lack of freedom
due to the pain and suffering during life. From the Christian perspective, the idea of freedom and
having free will started when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. Throughout
time, this became known as the original sin. It has been long debated whether Adam and Eve had the
free will to eat the fruit before, or even after eating it. It is said in the Bible that they gained
knowledge when they ate the fruit, but knowledge can mean so many things. Not only did

Telecommunication Is The Real Face Of The Advances Of...
Telecommunications
Telecommunication is the real face of the advances in Information Technology (IT). In fact, the
overwhelming advances that humankind has seen in the last decades in IT (internet, telephone,
television and radio broadcasting, satellite communication) are effects of the advance of
Telecommunications (normally the word is used in plural because it encompasses different types of
means of transmission). From the electrical telegraph of Samuel Morse (1837) to the transmission of
voice and image over the Internet (Skype, Hangout etc.), the Telecommunications has developed too
much and affected the world and the human being behavior.
Telecommunications means the transmission of information between two stations. Basically, a
transmitter, a receiver and an electrical mean channel are enough to complete a telecommunication
process. The channel can be a cable, electromagnetic waves or fiber optics. This system is
interconnected in a very large network on which all communications in the world is done. A simple
fixed telephone call, a cellphone call, a satellite transmission, an e mail, a download of a music,
everything is possible because of this network.
Even though the main goal of this network is the communication, it can go beyond this. Actually, this
large system supports the international trade, the online education, the exchanging of messages (e
mail, short message), the Internet, the bank transactions and many other services. Besides, a new kind

Negative Impact Of Technology
The Negative Impacts of Technology Technology is always continually advancing. The impact that
technology has had on individuals and on society is negative. This negative impact is driven by
technology s ability to worsen social interaction and provide a source of constant distraction.
Technology worsens social interactions by taking away real communication and relationship
boundaries. With the rise in popularity of phones and social media, people are having less real
communication. In Glennon Doyle Melton s essay, 6 Reasons Social Media is Dangerous for Me, she
writes, The students were hanging around in awkward circles, trying to get noticed or trying not to get
noticed, just like we did in high school. But we noticed with sadness one major difference. EVERY
KID WE SAW WAS on her phone (3). Everyone is paying more attention and occupied with their
gadgets instead of to actual people such as their family and friends. Technology is used by people as
an avoidance strategy. People may be comfortable chatting online, but not face to face. When chatting
online, people are unable to express themselves using body language, tone, or voice. It is clear that
children will not know how to read basic social cues or engage in small talk as a result of technology.
This causes them to not be able to gain crucial social skills needed for graceful social interactions.
Technology also creates a lack of relationship boundaries in today s youth. With the accessibility of

The Shattering of Idealism in Nadine Gerfimer´s The Moment...
Literature changed drastically between the nineteenth century and twentieth and twenty first century.
Idealistic views that British writers once held, turned into skepticism as Great Britain enter war and
inequalities grew greater. The writers of the twentieth and twenty first centuries wrote realistically
what was happening in the world. The Moment before the Gun Went Off by Nadine Gordimer and The
Day They Burned the Books by Jean Rhys are both stories that show the shattering of Idealism in
twentieth and twenty first centuries.
Britain s colonialism caused many problems for natives and natural born British who lived in the
colonies. The illusion of patriotism shattered as conflicts of race, class, and gender equality took light.
... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One of the many reasons why patriotism was shattered is because coloialism was creating harsh
tensions. In The Moment before the Gun Went Off they discuss how the killing of the son is going to
turn into an ugly racial debate Bad enough to have killed a man, without helping the Party s, the
government s, the country s enemies (p.1442) The reader can conclude from this quote that because
great Britain colonized in South Africa it caused rifts between many people. People s patriotism tends
to dwell when all they see is conflict around them. The once idealistic views turn critical when war
and inequalities is all there is. The twentieth and twenty first century writers were common people
going through horrific times such as extreme racism.
In The Moment before the Gun Went Off and The Day They Burned the Books both stories leave the
reader thinking. Unlike, the 19th century; modern writers often left the end of the story open ended
because they didn t see an end to the conflict. Modern writers often wrote their own personal
experiences and feelings on a particular issue leaving much room for the reader to analyze.
The Day They Burned the Books tells a story of young boy trying to find where he fits in. His father is
from Great Britain and his mother is from the West Indies. Eddie hates England because he associates
with his father; a man who is often mean to his mother and says things Look at

Advantages Of Star Wars Movies
Space, it s the final frontier. However, even now, many science fiction fanatics and casual watchers
alike will argue about which frontier is superior: the Star Wars films, or the Star Trek television
franchise. While the Star Wars movies are not bad, there are several reasons as to why the Star Trek
series are better. From instances of technology, to plot, to character, even to cultural influence, I
wholeheartedly believe that Star Trek is light years better than Star Wars. First released in 1977, the
Star Wars movies are good, and that is all. At the time, the films were regarded as storytelling and
special effect masterpieces, but forty years later, those feats that once defined them are no longer

Rebel spaceships, striking from a hidden base, have won their first victory against the evil Galactic

Already, they specifically label the Galactic Empire as villainous and introduce the Rebel alliance as
the heroes. While the idea of a battle of good and evil is not a bad one, it is not new, and it is not as
complex or relatable as the progressive Star Trek plot. In addition to plot, Star Trek has also had
numerous characters with many layers of depth. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker is the protagonist
boyish hero with a tragic motivation. That is the only defining point to his characterization. He wants
to be a hero for the sake of being a hero, whether it s in Episode IV and he s bargaining to go to the
Academy, or in Episode V when he leaves his Jedi training. In Star Trek:The Next Generation, we
meet Captain Jean Luc Picard, a man motivated by the pursuit of knowledge and the good of not only
humanity, but all life. More than that, he has interests beyond that in art, history, literature,
architecture. I will give Star Wars the exception of the complexity Darth Vader, however he is the only
exception.

Summary Of Trophic Cascades In A Great Lakes Forest
The Summary of Trophic Cascades in a Great Lakes Forest This investigative study included whether
gray wolves, a natural top predator to white tailed deer, create a trophic effect by reducing the deer
and how it may affect saplings and vegetation in the Great Lakes forest area. The study was not
conducted for direct kills, instead it was done to see the effects of the deer population and the plant
and vegetation systems surrounding them. The expected effects were that in areas where wolves are
less dense in the region it causes an increase of deer having a negative impact on plants and vegetation
in the surrounding area. The recolonization of wolves in the area is generating trait meditated effects

Scat surveys of the area were conducted to support the collar information. Other information such as
droppings, siting s, and tracks were also recorded and grouped with the surveys. Motion activated and
infrared cameras were used to monitor deer activity in the areas of high or low wolf presence. Three
images per trigger of each camera was taken. This information was gathered over a three week period
during deer season in June August. The information recorded was compared with other studies
including a trophic cascades study in the Rocky Mountains area. The results showed differences in
deer presence (in either high or low areas) in correlation with wolf presence, resulting in impacts of
plant and vegetation density in the areas. High wolf areas contained larger saplings and vegetation
diversity and comparisons of deer presence in low wolf presence areas had negative impacts on
sapling growth. Put together, the results suggest that wolves have a substantial effect on white tailed
deer and a positive impact on sapling and vegetation growth in the Great Lakes forest area. These
results supported previous research that wolves have density and/or trait meditated effects on white
tailed deer. They also provide experimental and manipulated support for previous experiments
suggesting that wolves generate trophic cascades affecting sapling and vegetation growth in various
regions, as well as the Great Lakes forest area. The

Customer Service And An Organization
Many companies continuously fail in customer service satisfaction for many reasons. As service
failures are inevitable, it is important for companies, especially small businesses, to capitalize on
learning the importance of reducing service failure. Just as the seed is the core of the fruit, customer
service is the core of an organization; its meaning is the primary function for organizations to retain
business and discover new ventures. Customer service is the primary source of business to customer
communication and in many ways, handles company issues via phone, email or on site. Without
customer service, it would be extremely difficult for organizations to operate or survive effectively.
Companies that provide exceptional customer service skills are more likely to have repeat business
from customers. As stated in the article, Customer Service and Its Importance In the Clinical
Laboratory, providing excellent service consists of the following components: listen, understand,
respect the need for the request, respond, ask if there is anything else you can do, always remain
friendly, courteous, and professional (Anderson, 2008). People that have one or more positive
experiences with a company will share their experience about that company with others, which will
increase business to that company. This is a way of promotion for the organization. More companies,
especially small investments, should focus on providing great service to its customers for promotion

Abstract
In order to decrease the number of cycles of infiltration and maintain a comparable cathode
performance, the viability of using a conductive LSF YSZ composite scaffold with one infiltration
cycle of LSCF was investigated. XRD patterns of LSF YSZ powder presented that at 1400oC and
1300oC calcination, an obvious shift in LSF peak occurred, indicating Zr doping into LSF and
forming a less conductive phase. Different ratios of LSF YSZ scaffolds were tested by impedance
spectroscopy with the results showing that the ohmic resistance decreases as the amount of LSF
increases, and 1350oC scaffold has a much lower ohmic resistance than the 1400oC one. A pure YSZ
cell infiltrated with 35 wt% LSCF was used as reference and by comparing it with a cell composed of
70:30 LSF YSZ scaffold calcined at 1350oC with one cycle of LSCF infiltration, a comparable cell
performance both in ohmic and non ohmic parts was achieved.
Introduction
In solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), the typical cathodes with the best performance are usually
composites of the electrolyte oxide and an electronically conductive and catalytically active oxide
which is usually a perovskite.1,2 For example, in cells made of yttria stablized zirconia (YSZ)
electrolyte, the conventional cathode composite is a mixture of YSZ and Sr doped LaMnO3 (LSM).
1,2 The commonly used YSZ electrolyte oxide in the electrode is to enhance the ionic conductivity,
thus increasing the electrochemically active region in the electrode. 1 4

Economic And Political Tensions Of The South China Sea
Economic and political tensions are rising in the South China Sea, part of the Pacific Ocean stretching
from Singapore to the Philippines to South East Asia. Recently, countries including the various
Southeast Asian countries as well as China claimed territory in the South China Sea. As countries
become increasingly intimidated by these new claims, the United States is stepping in, which only
causes tensions to increase. Now the South China Sea is a battleground for the resources it holds, and
one who studies Chinese history and its interactions with the west can see the reasons why China is
compelled to claim territory, and why the West, specifically the United States, feels threatened by
these claims. The South China Sea has been a key in global trade as well as supplying recourses. In
fact, Roughly two thirds of South Korea s energy supplies, nearly sixty percent of Japan s and Taiwan
s energy supplies, and eighty percent of China s crude oil imports come through the South China Sea.
Not only this, but, the South China Sea has proven oil reserves of seven billion barrels, and an
estimated 900 trillion cubic feet of natural gas (business insider). Given this, it s not surprising that
China, emerging from isolationism, is rebuilding its economy by claiming pre existing islands and
recently manmade islands in the South China Sea to extend their territory, recourse access. Besides the
access to raw materials, much of Southeast Asia ad China is grappling over the South

The Lost Sister Poem
LAAssignment: Poetry Essay on Lost Sisters
Name: Juay Liang Jing
Class: 209
Firstly, the two sisters life experiences are different in terms of and because of their personality. In the
first part of the poem, the sister who lives in China was submissive and made a choice to stay in
China. The daughters were grateful and they never left home . However, it is later revealed that for the
daughters living in China, to move freely was a luxury stolen from them at birth . It literally meant
that women in China were unable to walk about easily in shoes the size of teacups . It also figuratively
meant that women did not have the freedom to do what they like. This shows that females in China
were bounded by tradition and culture, and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Instead of living in China and living with the strict Chinese tradition, she decides to leave China for
America, to experience a lifestyle supposedly different from her sister as well as most women living in
China. She relinquished her name, diluting jade green with the blue of the Pacific , suggesting that she
broke free of the restrains in the Chinese culture. Relinquish suggested that she wanted to start anew,
and live a new life, while jade green refers to her China blood, and blue of the Pacific refers to
America, and possibly the western culture. This shows that she defied the norms of the Chinese
culture, and left home to move freely about. The poet uses words like rising , swarmed , inundate and
stride which suggests how she could be active and free to move around, as compared to her sister in
China, who did not have the privilege of being able to move around as she wants. Also, the sister
living in America could stride along with men on the roads . The sister living in China on the other
hand could only stay at home. This is a big contrast in comparison to her sister living in China, who
were restricted in whatever they

Summary Of William Penn s Treaty With The Indians
The painting of Benjamin West s William Penn s Treaty with the Indians participates in myth, memory
making, and in nation building. The way the West s painting participates in myth is by portraying a
more noble and peaceful relationship between European colonist and Native Americans as the colonist
continue to colonized the Native American s land. The way that the painting participates in memory
making is by letting us be able to visualize and remember the event on how the Pennsylvania colony
was established, and it participates in nation building because it portrays a nation that was built justly

Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis once observed, Once you can express yourself, you can tell the world
what you want from it. Self expression is a way for people to communicate. It allows one to convey
his or her thoughts and emotions to the outer world. People express themselves in several different
ways: using art forms, writing, performing, etc. Others express themselves through their moral
compass and character. Self expression of one s morals enables others to build trust and confide in he

What Is The Difference Between Arx And Engel s Theory Of...
arx and Engels believed that the system at work of labor in society created a general alienation of
people from consciousness of their species being ; consciousness of being human. Within this theory
of human alienation, Marx and Engels provide three components from which people are generally
estranged from: the objects of labor, from nature, and from the labor itself. Plato, in contrast, believed
that human alienation lived on the basis of specialization, efficiency, and lack of education. That
people, in Socrates Kallipolis, were generally alienated from the Form of the Truth and Ideas. He
derails from Marx and Engels in the sense that Plato never believed in an inevitable Communist
Revolution, but in a possible political revolution, needed in order to maintain moderation and avoid
the clash of ideas in society. Where Marx and Engels believe in communism for the good of economy,
Socrates believed in communism for the good of the government and his Republic.
Marx and Engels believed that the economy during the Industrial Revolution created a mechanical
system in which people came to be alienated from the reality of being a human being. They argue that
because society is putting in all of its effort to compete with each other so that production becomes a
competition, people lose their sense of living, the sense of themselve, their species being. In the
Communist Manifesto, they argue, The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionising the

Beauty Character Analysis
Over the course of the novel, one can see that each character has a different attitude and mindset
towards the beauty standards created in the early 1940s. Characters like Frieda and Claudia do not
agree with the beauty standards set by society. Claudia is seen to represent an automatic rejection of
external standards that were impossible for her to meet (Gonzalez 210). They find flaws in Maureen
Peal to prove she is not perfect and they call her mean names. Also, throughout the novel, Claudia has
a hatred for what people determine is beautiful. She would dismember her white baby dolls to try and
find the beauty in them that other people saw. Claudia would examine each part of the doll, trying to
find an ounce of beauty in it until she was left with the metal ball inside of it. In addition, Claudia
hates Shirley Temple, whereas Frieda and Pecola find her cute. Claudia hates her because she danced
with Bojangles whom Claudia referred to as my friend, my uncle, my daddy... (Morrison 19). She was
jealous and mad that a little white girl got to dance with Bojangles, a black man. Also, Claudia
preferred Jane Withers, who played opposite Shirley Temple in the film Bright Eyes. For the most part
Claudia and Frieda do not strive to meet the beauty standards created by society. On the other hand,
Pecola strives to achieve the ideal beauty. She wants to become the white, blonde hair, and blue eyed
girl that society deems as beautiful. People commonly referred Pecola as ugly.

During the course I realized how large of a role art plays in helping create cultures and developing and

The Israelites, the Greeks and Romans all tell stories of their history that has no written proof. It
seems that we as people want to have a connection to our roots and to understand where we come

Until now, I didn t realize how much Islam influenced art and practically kick started science. I
learned that the Abbasid caliphs established the House of Wisdom, a center of leaning and science.
They gathered manuscripts in Greek and Sanskrit along with scholars who could understand and
translate them from the areas that they conquered.
The Abbasids were the first ones to study and translate important Greek and Indian mathematical book
like Euclid s geometry text the Elements. They adopted a very Greek approach to mathematics of
formulating theorems precisely and proving them formally in Euclid s ways.
Islamists wrote many influential books on mathematics of algebra that we still use today. One of the
books described how to write numbers in calculations using the place value decimal system which is
what we use today. This concept was developed in India in A.D. 600 s which was translated and
adopted by Arabic mathematicians. About 300 years later this book was translated into Latin and it
became the major source for European academics to learn the new system. This system is known as
the Hindu Arabic system which is taught to schoolchildren around the world. It s amazing that a
system of calculations was brought to Europe from practically the other side of the world. I wonder
how long it would have taken to figure out the same system without Muslim involvement.
I find it fascinating how almost a millennia ago

The Assassination Of Abraham Lincoln
In the year 1865 on April 14, five days after Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox Courthouse,
one of America s greatest presidents, Abraham Lincoln, was shot and killed by a man named John
Wilkes Booth. Specifically, John Wilkes Booth was an American play actor and a big sympathiser for
the Confederacy. Booth was well known for his hatred towards the President and his crazy ideas and
motives, which lead to the killing of Lincoln. Many conspiracies and theories today believed the
assassination of Abraham Lincoln was handled by John Wilkes alone, but other conspiracies believed
that he did work with other conspirators. Personally, I believe that John Wilkes Booth idea of wanting
the President dead was all of his doing. His intentions for murdering Abraham Lincoln was out of pure
hatred towards the man and towards the Union, but for the obvious reason Booth could not of acted
entirely alone. Reasons being he could not kill the Vice President Andrew Johnson, the Secretary of
State William Seward, and the President Abraham Lincoln all in one night on his own. John Wilkes
Booth needed supporters to help with his own elaborate plan. For instance, the article Abraham
Lincoln s Assassination claimed, he [John Wilkes Booth] and several associates hatched a plot to
kidnap the president and take him to Richmond, the Confederate capital...the day of the planned
kidnapping, Lincoln failed to appear at the spot where Booth and his six fellow conspirators lay in

Stories of People before Us
It was many years ago, long before your beloved parents or even their own. It was far past the time
when skyscrapers first began their grazing of the heavens, past even the taking advantage of devote
teachers. Further still, our story takes us. Much like many tales of this sort there is perhaps little truth
weaved in all that serve not as references for literal information but references for wisdom and
understanding. I do not profess that readers who study these tomes will come out any the wiser, nor is
it this tome s sole purpose. Some things in life do not require purpose nor plan, but moving forward.
Before our world, there was perhaps another. In it lived a single person, a woman perhaps, who ruled
over all the animals and plants. She, like most others, did not enjoy her solitude and decided to design
a people to accompany her. So thus, people came to be. Despite the people, she had no joy. Those she
had created were savage, greedy, and sinful. It displeased her. However, she was merciful and could
not bring herself to destroy them, so instead felt it necessary to guide them. To assist her she created a
new type of people, one who would embody all that she valued. These people would be rulers and
would rule over the other citizens. To form her new rulers she took four traits, agápē (unconditional
love), compassion, generosity, trustworthiness, and composed one whom she would entrust with her
people. Carefully she layered a combination of agápē trustworthiness

Words are powerful tools that can be used to represent people and shape opinions about others. In a

Indigenous Australians do not own the land. They see it as part of them and that it is their duty to
respect and look after their mother earth. They use the land to live on, to gain food from, to make
items they need and then to return their ancestors to the earth, when they pass on. This is a different
concept to the culture White Australians have grown up with. Danalis has to explore his own
prejudices and realises that he lives in a nation with some, who are trying to come to terms with both
heritages, cultures and beliefs.
Indigenous Australians bury their ancestors on what average Australians see as prime land, where
profits could be made from farming or mining. Indigenous Australians do this, as they believe they
can: ...enter the spirit world and become one with their mother... the Earth... Calling the earth their
Mother, solidifies Indigenous Australian s strong connectivity of their spiritual heritage with the land.
This is something that White Australians do not have in their heritage. The Indigenous people care for
and love the earth they live on. They have a spiritual connection to it, not just a physical one. Simply,
this is not part of how White Australians view the land and it is not part of their heritage.

Music And Its Effect On People Essay
There have always been significant uses of music in particular background situations to create desired
effects on people. Retail stores use music to increase spending, employers use specific types of music
to ease their employees, and doctors use soothing music to help relax their tense patients. Teachers
come across numerous challenges within their classrooms when it comes to the distractions that
students encounter. It may be behavior which is distracting, such as doing something not class related,
or it may be behavior that is interruptive and intentionally disruptive. Not all students can come to
school with a fresh start that allows them to be ready and willing to learn. Still, society expects
educators to teach all students and for all students to learn in the same ways. Studies have shown that
music can be an efficient tool for resolving some of these barricades of the learning process. When
music is suitably used as a background enhancer, the student s ability to concentrate within the
classroom setting increases.
As the classroom setting has advanced and progressed over time, teachers now have an opportunity to
enrich learning further than before. There are various approaches a teacher can positively use to affect
the productivity, behavior, and motivation of students. One of the specific strategies now commonly
used to boost student learning is the use of background music. Background music is not actively or
purposely listened to, but intended to be heard.

A bill is a proposed legislation that is brought to a legislative body. In the case of the New York City
Council, the bill is introduced into the Council at a Stated Meeting and becomes a law after an
intricate voting or vetoing process with the Council and the Mayor of New York City ( Legislative
Process ). In the last year, many bills were passed by the New York City Council. While browsing
through the list of bills passed in the last year, a bill in particular stood out to me Reducing city
government emission of greenhouse gases by 40 percent by 2030, as it is a bill that proposes a way to
tackle climate change. The bill was dated to be on the agenda for October 15, 2015, and its co
sponsors are Donovan J. Richards, Costa G. Constantinides, Margaret S. Chin, Mathieu Eugene,
Vincent J. Gentile, Corey D. Johnson, Peter A. Koo, Rosie Mendez, Annabel Palma, Deborah L. Rose,

Essay on Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion
Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion Ocean thermal energy conversion (OTEC) utilizes the natural
temperature difference in tropical regions to generate electricity. The idea of using the ocean to
generate electricity was proposed by a French physicist by the name of Jacques Arsene d Arsonval in
1881. Georges Cluade who was one of d Arsonval students, built the first OTEC power plant in Cuba.
Cluade also built a second power plant in 1935 on a 10,000 ton cargo ship which was moored off the
coast of Brazil. Unfortunate events with weather and waves caused both facilities to be destroyed
before either could be net generators. The United States became interested in OTEC technology in

The steam then boils the low point boiling fluid, which drives the turbine to produce electricity. The
hybrid combined the vacuum portion of the open cycle system and uses the low point boiling fluid like
the closed cycle system. Unfortunately, there is no mass energy production for the Ocean Thermal
Energy Conversion but there has been a successful attempt in 1979, when Lockheed Martin
successfully built and operated over a three month period a net power mini OTEC system which
generated 50 kilowatts of net power off the Big Island of Hawaii. But the United States is not the only
country who is invested into OTEC systems, Japan has currently a closed system OTEC plant that has
generated 31.5 kilowatts of power during tests. The positives of the OTEC system is monumental.
Even if one tenth of one percent of the solar energy trapped by the oceans could be converted into
electricity, It would generate twenty times the amount of electricity the United States use everyday. It
could easily supply all the energy we wanted, said Terry Penney, a lab program manager at the
National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. The process is very low efficiency, just 2 or
3 or 4 percent, but all that energy s free. (qtd. in charles. The Energy Debates: Ocean Thermal Energy

The Authority Of Religious Elites In The 1640s Witch Hunts
The Authority of Religious Elites in the 1640s Witch Hunts The large scale witch hunts that occurred
from 1638 to 1651 gathered momentum via major happenings in the political, societal, and religious
domains developing at the time. Individuals who had either political, religious or economic power in
society, also known as elites, together had absolute control over the pursuit and prosecution of
individuals who partook in witchcraft. The clergy played a crucial role in the witchcraft prosecutions
and were slower than the state and localities to desert their beliefs in the reality of witches as the
prosecution of witchcraft was, in their eyes, an effective tool to eradicate social deviance. Though
local authorities and the Parliament did contribute to the witch hunts significantly, without the kirk of
Scotland declaring and encouraging this sanction on witchcraft, both other parties would not have
taken the actions they ultimately did. This essay will provide a brief description of events that took
place from 1638 to 1651 and then utilize evidence from a multitude of sources to argue that the
religious elites were the most influential of these forces during the witchcraft prosecutions that
occurred in the 1640s. Due to the Scots dissatisfaction with the current monarch, King Charles I, the
National Covenant was formed by on February 28th in 1638 at Greyfrairs Kirk in Edinburgh. All his
subjects were welcome to sign this document as it was viewed as an irrevocable contract

Statement Of Purpose For Geotechical Engineering
As the world is moving towards more advancement, many constructions are planned and constructed
day to day. Any structural construction simply stands on the soil. So, Geotechnical Engineering has
much more to do with every construction being planned. Always being an enthusiast to learning and
innovation, the four year undergraduate degree inspired me to achieve and learn more.
As time passed with technical knowledge, I became more interested in depth knowledge. Many factors
have triggered my mind and influenced me for pursuing a Masters of Science in Civil Engineering
with the major in Geotechnical Engineering. Basic ideas in this field made me go to retrieve more. My
interest in Geotech was sparked by the Geotechnical aspect of our country and mainly a part of

Here my major responsibility is to make designs of safer residential buildings which are earthquake
resistant as well. Along with these duties, I am responsible for doing site surveys for building
construction and make sure the place where construction work is to be carried out is geologically safe.
After my college, I spent almost three months as a Surveyor under the Department of Burea and
Statistics of Nepal and worked on five VDC s of Kaski District. During this time I accessed the
damage caused by the Nepal Earthquake of 2015 on the structures. While working I also got the
chance to analyze the causes of destruction and found out that the geological aspect too had a vital
role in building collapse. Also, the structures were wanting a proper engineering guidance and
construction technology. During this time, I found out that many people were unaware of the need for
soil tests to be conducted before construction. In here I realized the need to develop my designing
skills and to research and learn more on geotechnical part of the

Is Hamlet Sane Or Insane
Shakespeare s tragic hero, Hamlet, and his sanity can be argued. Many parts of the play shows that he
may be sane, or insane. There are indications from Hamlet throughout the play of his mind s well
being including many quotes that support both sides. Hamlet has mood swings and his mood changes
many times throughout the play. Hamlet seems to act mad when he found out about his father s death
by saying weird things that make him sound mad. It seems as if there are two different Hamlets
throughout the play, one that is a sensitive prince and then the insane Hamlet who from an outburst of
passion and rage stabs and kills Polonius without feeling any remorse. After killing Polonius he doesn
t tell anyone where the body is. Instead he assumes that everyone just thinks that he s gone mad. ...

Multistep Synthesis Lab Report
Multistep Synthesis Of Benzilic Acid From Benzaldehyde Jesus Pena L20326354 Lamar University
CHEM 3112 Spring 2017 April 26th, 2017 Abstract: Benzilic acid is used in many aspects of industry.
These types of industry are the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. This process of taking
benzaldehyde and using a multistep synthesis procedure makes making benzilic acid fairly cheap. This
is mainly due to the fact that benzaldehyde is a cheap starting material and is very resourceful. The
overall objective of the experiment was to obtain benzilic acid with the use of the multistep synthesis
procedure which consist of a benzoin condensation, oxidation of benzoin, and a final molecular
rearrangement of benzil. This is a fairly long experiment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Next having already measured out 30ml of 95% ethanol and 5ml of 3M aqueous NaOH, added the
30ml of 95% ethanol and proceeded to put into ice bath. Added the 3M aqueous NaOH slowly as to
not exceed a temperature of 20°C. Proceeding with the reaction a total of 15.10ml of benzaldehyde
was added and allowed to reflux over the course of an hour. Once reflux was done mixture was
allowed to crystallize and the product, benzoin, was collected with vacuum filtration and washed with
cold water along with two 10ml portions of cold methanol. The second step required taking the weight
of benzoin and halving it in order to know the amount of ammonium nitrate to obtain. So, 3.142 g of
ammonium nitrate and 35ml of acetic acid were added into a round bottom flask and ammonium
nitrate was allowed to dissolve. 0.165 g of copper (II) acetate and the benzoin were added to the round
bottom flask. This was then added to the reflux apparatus and allowed to reflux for about an hour.
After reflux mixture was added to 100ml of crushed ice and cooled afterward was vacuum filtrated
and washed with water and 50% ethanol. Benzil was now the product

How Human Digestive System Works
Discover how the human digestive system works one of the most important systems in the human
body. Learn what each part does, and then see how much you remember with a quick quiz.
!!!What is the Human Digestive System?
We all love food. It s tasty, and fun, and absolutely vital for life. But have you ever wondered how
your body turns all that yummy food into the stuff the body needs to work? The body needs energy,
and it needs it in the form of glucose (sugar). So how do we get from complex food that contains lots
of things that aren t sugar, to pure, sugary energy?
The system in your body that does this important job is called the digestive system. The __digestive
system__ is a set of organs, passageways, and glands that work together ... Show more content on

Your __stomach__ contains strong acids that break down the food further. It churns the food in the
acid to form a mixture called chyme. Enzymes are also released by the stomach, which are particularly
good at breaking down proteins in the food you ate. Food will often stay in the stomach for hours,
until it reaches a creamy or liquidy consistency, before being gradually squirted into the next section
the small intestine. It can take anywhere from two to six hours for this to happen.

!!!The Small and Large Intestines
The next part of the digestive system is the __small intestine__, which is a long, windy and thin tube
that snakes its way around the lower part of your belly. Here the food is mixed with bile and other
enzymes, which are created by the liver and pancreas, to break down the molecules in the food even
further. Once the food has been turned into glucose, those molecules are absorbed by the wall of the
small intestine and move into the blood, where they provide energy for the body. The small intestine
also absorbs vitamins, minerals, simple fatty acids and amino acids. This is another slow, gradual
process and takes 3 6

Should High Schools Drop Football
Should High Schools Drop Football Because Too Many Players Are Getting Hurt? Friday night lights
is something to look forward to for many high school students and community members. Being a
varsity football cheerleader, I myself look forward to those nights, but, is playing for only one night a
week and 10 weeks out of the year, worth risking your life for? Some think of football as one of the
most harmful sports, considering all of the contact that is involved. With all of the things like
blockings, holdings, sacks, and tackles, it would be hard for one to deny that. Since many have started
to take these dangerous impacts that football may have on those who play into consideration, school
administrators began asking, Should high schools drop football because too many players are getting
hurt? Attempts to make changes to the roughness that comes along with playing football, trace all the
way back to the 1900 s. Before that time, football was considered rugby, which was even more
dangerous. In rugby, The results were predictable: smashed noses, dislocated shoulders, broken necks
and fractured skulls. Dozens of young men died, mostly from cerebral hemorrhage (Zimmerman 2),
which terrified many. Over time, the name rugby, eventually died out and later became known as
football. Years later, when president Roosevelt got into office and noticed nearly 20 deaths that
happened that fall from football, he called for a meeting with coaches from different colleges. The

Min Wage Essay
Should Minimum wage be increased?
Introduction
For many decades now, there has been heated debates concerning minimum wages and increases in
those wages. Most people have a tendency to assume that when the minimum wage is increased
people will benefit. They do not stop to think of the consequences that come from minimum wage
increases. The general population merely assumes that people should make an adequate amount of
income and never stop to consider the consequences, nor do they stop to consider alternatives. A rise
in minimum wages is not necessarily the best approach to helping the poverty stricken individuals in
this country. The following paper presents an overview of various problems concerning raising
minimum wage, finding that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Poor
The primary reason most people give for wanting to increase the minimum wage is that of helping
poor people. There are many studies that indicate the benefits are just as numerous as the damage
done. According to James Kaz, the majority of those who are paid minimum wage are not poor but
rather one of at least one other income providers in a household. Most people working for minimum
wage are teenagers...and those used to simply go work for almost nothing for some company or
individual in the field they wanted their career . (Kaz02.html)
It appears that the poor are done much more damage than good through minimum wage increases.
Neumark et al. (1999) provide the following background in that regard:
The lower employment occurs mainly because the increase in the cost of low skilled labor, relative to
the cost of using other productive inputs (such as machinery or more skilled workers), leads
employers away from using low skilled labor and toward these other inputs. This substitution effect is
reinforced by the higher overall cost of production associated with the legislated increase in the wage
for low skilled workers, which in turn raises the price of the product and results in less output sold.
(NA)
In addition, there are numerous workers who are adversely affected by a minimum wage change in the
fact that they do not receive the full amount of the legislated increase. This is what happens to, say, an
individual who

  • 5. The Dangers of the Trenches Ww1 Introduction The Great War began in 1914 and lasted a gruelling 4 years. During this war, new and powerful weapons were developed such as machinery, guns and heavy artillery. Soldiers had no choice but to dig trenches, which were barely sustainable to live in, in order to protect themselves from the constant enemy gunfire. They lived, ate, slept and fought in these trenches for the whole 4 years... In this investigation I will thoroughly examine evidence from a whole range of resources to find out the extent of some of the misery and dangers in the trenches for the British and soldiers in World War One starting with miseries. While these soldiers are looking in good health, soldiers often became ill after eating the poorly prepared food, which may carry parasites from water or unusual ingredients like plant weeds and mud when rations fell terribly low. Health and Hygiene Soldiers in the trenches face some of the most unhygienic environments known to man! The extent of the health problems is never fully understood. This is primarily because they were censored and only the war survivors lived to tell the stories about the problems. Some of the most obvious problems were the cold, mud and the harsh side effects of rough sleeping. In winter, warm cups of team would freeze in a couple of minutes even if you took your boots off! The mud from the poorly made British trenches coated clothing in just a few hours and was rarely changed, leaving the body to bath in bacterial growth and sweat! In severe cases, one solider spend 42 days of 1915 without removing his socks and boots. Some soldiers did sometimes do this intentionally to get out of the front line fighting and even faced trench foot and risk of amputation to escape the harsh environment. Body Lice One of many problems was body lice infestation within the trenches which made life extremely difficult! One soldier said they were pale fawn in colour, and they left blotchy red markings all over the body . They also left a vile smell. They ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Literature 10/05/17 Reyes Luna 2 The freedom that awaits in the breezes of the air lures the appetent soul. It propels many to leap despite the uncertainty of having wings, hopeful that the gusts of wind would suffice and carry the weight of their lives. An infatuation with the wonders of flight as a form of escape, is frequently juxtaposed with the desire to fight, choosing confrontation by remaining on the ground and facing the problems at hand. However, this fight or flight response, as it has been coined, has become an oversimplification of the way humans react in the face of adversity. It fails to recognize that paradoxically, ... He had lived and seen the true colors of the world, heard the voices of those who spoke and had rejected it, the same way they all had rejected him...and chose flight instead. While bystanders stood silent and in disbelief, a character is introduced by drawing a parallel with her personality to her social interactions. Choosing to break the stillness of the happening with song. O Sugarman done fly away, Sugarman done gone, Sugarman cut across the sky, Sugarman gone home... (Morrison 6). Truly Mr. Robert had in a distorted way accomplished something, he had gained one way ticket back home. Paradoxically, the end of his life marked the beginning of a new, as if by design, it was the same day as Milkman s birth...the last character to take flight. The first manifestation of the metaphor of flight was as a means of escape from life itself. Arguably, Mr. Smith had given up on the world and felt that there was only one solution for all his problems, to fly away from them all. However, this merely showcases the cliché definition of what it means to fly. The next case comes into fruition in the character of Pilate, who introduces a new elucidation to the metaphor. From the distinctive undertones that arise from the name alone, Pilate proves to be a character of her own caliber. Different from the rest, Pilate is molded by her ... • 7. Lolita Pedophile How do people set up the border between affection and illness? As metaphorically as it may seem, although people now have clearer understanding of the importance when it comes to mental health, some of the common conceptual illness such as pedophilia still haunts the society with the confusion between one s freedom of choice and a disease that can be cured or eased. To grasp the controversy and the impact of psychology and the society, Lolita is an essential piece of literature that demonstrates the real life application of an example in mental illness and how the society characterize the patients that affects the group as a whole. From Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, the theme of mental illness and social values is introduced in three main aspects: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The American Psychiatric Association has confirmed the latest corrected information: The new manual specifies that in order for an atypical sexual behavior to be classified as a mental condition, a person must: 1. Feel personal distress about their interest, not merely distress resulting from society s disapproval; or 2. have a sexual desire or behavior that involves another person s psychological distress... for sexual behaviors involving unwilling persons or persons unable to give legal consent. (Stuart) In other words, as long as one does not violate others right and does not involves in unwilling sexual relationship, one should not be considered as a pedophile but a person who has a preferable sexual orientation. Because this concept released in 2013 has not been widely realized in the society, the unclear information confuses people with the seemingly abstruse fantasy. In the story Lolita, the same issue is also being debated: On one hand, the society is aware of the potential crime with pedophilia and yet regard the hidden danger of mental illness in every individual like Humbert; On the other hand, people with a particular disapproving sexual orientation is thought to be the scapegoat of rapists and abusers. The patients show normal memories for events that occurred before the injury but has severely impaired ability to recall information about events that occurred after the incident. Anterograde amnesia is reflected in the movie 50 first dates through the main character, Lucy Whitmore, whose memory lasts only a day because her memory stopped on the day of car accident. (additional description) The movie, 50 first dates, contains valid depiction of anterograde amnesia yet it also contains some dramatic points that is far from reality. Although the movie, 50 first dates, was fairly dramatic, it accurately portrays the possible struggles that patients may experience from anterograde amnesia. The main idea of the movie is that the main character Lucy gets into a car accident on the day of her father s birthday. The accident causes a severe brain injury to her temporal lobe and it leads her to suffer from anterograde amnesia. Because memories of any events occurred after the accident fades away, Lucy wakes up every morning thinking that it is October 13th, the day of a car accident. • 14. Erasmus Vs Erasmus The topic of freedom can mean so many things to every person. Theologists, Calvin and Luther, did not think human had freedom of choice, only that God had already laid out a plan for us. Erasmus, on the other hand, disagreed with them and thought that people must have a free will, because God would not punish us for the sins that he predestined us to do. Unlike in Christianity, Buddhism and Hinduism believe in freedom in a sense that there is freedom after life that cannot truly be explained in words. I agree with Erasmus in that everyone has free will, but it is the circumstances in which you live that will help determine the choices you make. Death is also a form of freedom in that there is nothing beyond death, and it should be seen as a neutral. There are many views of freedom depending on your view of life, your religion, or how you were raised, and these circumstances give more probability to certain decisions from the multiple choices always available, but humans also have a lack of freedom due to the pain and suffering during life. From the Christian perspective, the idea of freedom and having free will started when Adam and Eve disobeyed God and ate the forbidden fruit. Throughout time, this became known as the original sin. It has been long debated whether Adam and Eve had the free will to eat the fruit before, or even after eating it. It is said in the Bible that they gained knowledge when they ate the fruit, but knowledge can mean so many things. Not only did ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 15. Telecommunication Is The Real Face Of The Advances Of... Telecommunications Telecommunication is the real face of the advances in Information Technology (IT). In fact, the overwhelming advances that humankind has seen in the last decades in IT (internet, telephone, television and radio broadcasting, satellite communication) are effects of the advance of Telecommunications (normally the word is used in plural because it encompasses different types of means of transmission). From the electrical telegraph of Samuel Morse (1837) to the transmission of voice and image over the Internet (Skype, Hangout etc.), the Telecommunications has developed too much and affected the world and the human being behavior. Telecommunications means the transmission of information between two stations. Basically, a transmitter, a receiver and an electrical mean channel are enough to complete a telecommunication process. The channel can be a cable, electromagnetic waves or fiber optics. This system is interconnected in a very large network on which all communications in the world is done. A simple fixed telephone call, a cellphone call, a satellite transmission, an e mail, a download of a music, everything is possible because of this network. Even though the main goal of this network is the communication, it can go beyond this. Actually, this large system supports the international trade, the online education, the exchanging of messages (e mail, short message), the Internet, the bank transactions and many other services. This negative impact is driven by technology s ability to worsen social interaction and provide a source of constant distraction. Technology worsens social interactions by taking away real communication and relationship boundaries. With the rise in popularity of phones and social media, people are having less real communication. In Glennon Doyle Melton s essay, 6 Reasons Social Media is Dangerous for Me, she writes, The students were hanging around in awkward circles, trying to get noticed or trying not to get noticed, just like we did in high school. But we noticed with sadness one major difference. EVERY KID WE SAW WAS on her phone (3). Everyone is paying more attention and occupied with their gadgets instead of to actual people such as their family and friends. Technology is used by people as an avoidance strategy. People may be comfortable chatting online, but not face to face. When chatting online, people are unable to express themselves using body language, tone, or voice. It is clear that children will not know how to read basic social cues or engage in small talk as a result of technology. This causes them to not be able to gain crucial social skills needed for graceful social interactions. Technology also creates a lack of relationship boundaries in today s youth. Idealistic views that British writers once held, turned into skepticism as Great Britain enter war and inequalities grew greater. The writers of the twentieth and twenty first centuries wrote realistically what was happening in the world. The Moment before the Gun Went Off by Nadine Gordimer and The Day They Burned the Books by Jean Rhys are both stories that show the shattering of Idealism in twentieth and twenty first centuries. However, even now, many science fiction fanatics and casual watchers alike will argue about which frontier is superior: the Star Wars films, or the Star Trek television franchise. While the Star Wars movies are not bad, there are several reasons as to why the Star Trek series are better. From instances of technology, to plot, to character, even to cultural influence, I wholeheartedly believe that Star Trek is light years better than Star Wars. This information was gathered over a three week period during deer season in June August. As service failures are inevitable, it is important for companies, especially small businesses, to capitalize on learning the importance of reducing service failure. Just as the seed is the core of the fruit, customer service is the core of an organization; its meaning is the primary function for organizations to retain business and discover new ventures. Customer service is the primary source of business to customer communication and in many ways, handles company issues via phone, email or on site. Without customer service, it would be extremely difficult for organizations to operate or survive effectively. Companies that provide exceptional customer service skills are more likely to have repeat business from customers. As stated in the article, Customer Service and Its Importance In the Clinical Laboratory, providing excellent service consists of the following components: listen, understand, respect the need for the request, respond, ask if there is anything else you can do, always remain friendly, courteous, and professional (Anderson, 2008). People that have one or more positive experiences with a company will share their experience about that company with others, which will increase business to that company. This is a way of promotion for the organization. More companies, especially small investments, should focus on providing great service to its customers for promotion and increase in ... • 22. Lab Report On Solid Oxide Fuel Cells ( Sofc ) Abstract In order to decrease the number of cycles of infiltration and maintain a comparable cathode performance, the viability of using a conductive LSF YSZ composite scaffold with one infiltration cycle of LSCF was investigated. XRD patterns of LSF YSZ powder presented that at 1400oC and 1300oC calcination, an obvious shift in LSF peak occurred, indicating Zr doping into LSF and forming a less conductive phase. Different ratios of LSF YSZ scaffolds were tested by impedance spectroscopy with the results showing that the ohmic resistance decreases as the amount of LSF increases, and 1350oC scaffold has a much lower ohmic resistance than the 1400oC one. A pure YSZ cell infiltrated with 35 wt% LSCF was used as reference and by comparing it with a cell composed of 70:30 LSF YSZ scaffold calcined at 1350oC with one cycle of LSCF infiltration, a comparable cell performance both in ohmic and non ohmic parts was achieved. Introduction In solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC), the typical cathodes with the best performance are usually composites of the electrolyte oxide and an electronically conductive and catalytically active oxide which is usually a perovskite.1,2 For example, in cells made of yttria stablized zirconia (YSZ) electrolyte, the conventional cathode composite is a mixture of YSZ and Sr doped LaMnO3 (LSM). 1,2 The commonly used YSZ electrolyte oxide in the electrode is to enhance the ionic conductivity, thus increasing the electrochemically active region in the electrode. 1 4 ... • 23. Economic And Political Tensions Of The South China Sea Economic and political tensions are rising in the South China Sea, part of the Pacific Ocean stretching from Singapore to the Philippines to South East Asia. Recently, countries including the various Southeast Asian countries as well as China claimed territory in the South China Sea. As countries become increasingly intimidated by these new claims, the United States is stepping in, which only causes tensions to increase. Now the South China Sea is a battleground for the resources it holds, and one who studies Chinese history and its interactions with the west can see the reasons why China is compelled to claim territory, and why the West, specifically the United States, feels threatened by these claims. The South China Sea has been a key in global trade as well as supplying recourses. In fact, Roughly two thirds of South Korea s energy supplies, nearly sixty percent of Japan s and Taiwan s energy supplies, and eighty percent of China s crude oil imports come through the South China Sea. Not only this, but, the South China Sea has proven oil reserves of seven billion barrels, and an estimated 900 trillion cubic feet of natural gas (business insider). Given this, it s not surprising that China, emerging from isolationism, is rebuilding its economy by claiming pre existing islands and recently manmade islands in the South China Sea to extend their territory, recourse access. Relinquish suggested that she wanted to start anew, and live a new life, while jade green refers to her China blood, and blue of the Pacific refers to America, and possibly the western culture. This shows that she defied the norms of the Chinese culture, and left home to move freely about. The poet uses words like rising , swarmed , inundate and stride which suggests how she could be active and free to move around, as compared to her sister in China, who did not have the privilege of being able to move around as she wants. What Is The Difference Between Arx And Engel s Theory Of... arx and Engels believed that the system at work of labor in society created a general alienation of people from consciousness of their species being ; consciousness of being human. Within this theory of human alienation, Marx and Engels provide three components from which people are generally estranged from: the objects of labor, from nature, and from the labor itself. Plato, in contrast, believed that human alienation lived on the basis of specialization, efficiency, and lack of education. That people, in Socrates Kallipolis, were generally alienated from the Form of the Truth and Ideas. He derails from Marx and Engels in the sense that Plato never believed in an inevitable Communist Revolution, but in a possible political revolution, needed in order to maintain moderation and avoid the clash of ideas in society. Where Marx and Engels believe in communism for the good of economy, Socrates believed in communism for the good of the government and his Republic. Marx and Engels believed that the economy during the Industrial Revolution created a mechanical system in which people came to be alienated from the reality of being a human being. They argue that because society is putting in all of its effort to compete with each other so that production becomes a competition, people lose their sense of living, the sense of themselve, their species being. Characters like Frieda and Claudia do not agree with the beauty standards set by society. Claudia is seen to represent an automatic rejection of external standards that were impossible for her to meet (Gonzalez 210). They find flaws in Maureen Peal to prove she is not perfect and they call her mean names. Also, throughout the novel, Claudia has a hatred for what people determine is beautiful. She would dismember her white baby dolls to try and find the beauty in them that other people saw. Claudia would examine each part of the doll, trying to find an ounce of beauty in it until she was left with the metal ball inside of it. In addition, Claudia hates Shirley Temple, whereas Frieda and Pecola find her cute. Claudia hates her because she danced with Bojangles whom Claudia referred to as my friend, my uncle, my daddy... (Morrison 19). She was jealous and mad that a little white girl got to dance with Bojangles, a black man. Also, Claudia preferred Jane Withers, who played opposite Shirley Temple in the film Bright Eyes. For the most part Claudia and Frieda do not strive to meet the beauty standards created by society. I do not profess that readers who study these tomes will come out any the wiser, nor is it this tome s sole purpose. Some things in life do not require purpose nor plan, but moving forward. Before our world, there was perhaps another. In it lived a single person, a woman perhaps, who ruled over all the animals and plants. She, like most others, did not enjoy her solitude and decided to design a people to accompany her. So thus, people came to be. Despite the people, she had no joy. Those she had created were savage, greedy, and sinful. It displeased her. However, she was merciful and could not bring herself to destroy them, so instead felt it necessary to guide them. To assist her she created a new type of people, one who would embody all that she valued. These people would be rulers and would rule over the other citizens. The idea of using the ocean to generate electricity was proposed by a French physicist by the name of Jacques Arsene d Arsonval in 1881. Georges Cluade who was one of d Arsonval students, built the first OTEC power plant in Cuba. Cluade also built a second power plant in 1935 on a 10,000 ton cargo ship which was moored off the coast of Brazil. Unfortunate events with weather and waves caused both facilities to be destroyed before either could be net generators. The United States became interested in OTEC technology in 1974 and built the Natural Energy Laboratory of Hawaii Authority ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The steam then boils the low point boiling fluid, which drives the turbine to produce electricity. The hybrid combined the vacuum portion of the open cycle system and uses the low point boiling fluid like the closed cycle system. Unfortunately, there is no mass energy production for the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion but there has been a successful attempt in 1979, when Lockheed Martin successfully built and operated over a three month period a net power mini OTEC system which generated 50 kilowatts of net power off the Big Island of Hawaii. But the United States is not the only country who is invested into OTEC systems, Japan has currently a closed system OTEC plant that has generated 31.5 kilowatts of power during tests. The positives of the OTEC system is monumental. Even if one tenth of one percent of the solar energy trapped by the oceans could be converted into electricity, It would generate twenty times the amount of electricity the United States use everyday. It could easily supply all the energy we wanted, said Terry Penney, a lab program manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo. The process is very low efficiency, just 2 or 3 or 4 percent, but all that energy s free. (qtd. in charles. The Energy Debates: Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion. LiveScience. TechMedia Network, 12 Dec. 2008. Web. 03 Feb. 2014.) Unlike Solar and Wind alternative energy, OTEC can work during the day and night, which means that OTEC can create ... • 44. The Authority Of Religious Elites In The 1640s Witch Hunts The Authority of Religious Elites in the 1640s Witch Hunts The large scale witch hunts that occurred from 1638 to 1651 gathered momentum via major happenings in the political, societal, and religious domains developing at the time. Individuals who had either political, religious or economic power in society, also known as elites, together had absolute control over the pursuit and prosecution of individuals who partook in witchcraft. The clergy played a crucial role in the witchcraft prosecutions and were slower than the state and localities to desert their beliefs in the reality of witches as the prosecution of witchcraft was, in their eyes, an effective tool to eradicate social deviance. Though local authorities and the Parliament did contribute to the witch hunts significantly, without the kirk of Scotland declaring and encouraging this sanction on witchcraft, both other parties would not have taken the actions they ultimately did. This essay will provide a brief description of events that took place from 1638 to 1651 and then utilize evidence from a multitude of sources to argue that the religious elites were the most influential of these forces during the witchcraft prosecutions that occurred in the 1640s. Due to the Scots dissatisfaction with the current monarch, King Charles I, the National Covenant was formed by on February 28th in 1638 at Greyfrairs Kirk in Edinburgh. • 47. Multistep Synthesis Lab Report Multistep Synthesis Of Benzilic Acid From Benzaldehyde Jesus Pena L20326354 Lamar University CHEM 3112 Spring 2017 April 26th, 2017 Abstract: Benzilic acid is used in many aspects of industry. These types of industry are the pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and food industries. This process of taking benzaldehyde and using a multistep synthesis procedure makes making benzilic acid fairly cheap. This is mainly due to the fact that benzaldehyde is a cheap starting material and is very resourceful. The overall objective of the experiment was to obtain benzilic acid with the use of the multistep synthesis procedure which consist of a benzoin condensation, oxidation of benzoin, and a final molecular rearrangement of benzil. This is a fairly long experiment ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Once reflux was done mixture was allowed to crystallize and the product, benzoin, was collected with vacuum filtration and washed with cold water along with two 10ml portions of cold methanol. The second step required taking the weight of benzoin and halving it in order to know the amount of ammonium nitrate to obtain. So, 3.142 g of ammonium nitrate and 35ml of acetic acid were added into a round bottom flask and ammonium nitrate was allowed to dissolve. 0.165 g of copper (II) acetate and the benzoin were added to the round bottom flask. This was then added to the reflux apparatus and allowed to reflux for about an hour. • 48. How Human Digestive System Works Discover how the human digestive system works one of the most important systems in the human body. Learn what each part does, and then see how much you remember with a quick quiz. !!!What is the Human Digestive System? We all love food. It s tasty, and fun, and absolutely vital for life. But have you ever wondered how your body turns all that yummy food into the stuff the body needs to work? The body needs energy, and it needs it in the form of glucose (sugar). So how do we get from complex food that contains lots of things that aren t sugar, to pure, sugary energy? The system in your body that does this important job is called the digestive system. The __digestive system__ is a set of organs, passageways, and glands that work together ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Your __stomach__ contains strong acids that break down the food further. It churns the food in the acid to form a mixture called chyme. Enzymes are also released by the stomach, which are particularly good at breaking down proteins in the food you ate. Food will often stay in the stomach for hours, until it reaches a creamy or liquidy consistency, before being gradually squirted into the next section the small intestine. It can take anywhere from two to six hours for this to happen. [{Image src= enzyme_break_down_diagram.jpg alt= The Process by Which Enzymes Break Molecules into Smaller Ones caption= The Process by Which Enzymes Break Molecules into Smaller Ones }] !!!The Small and Large Intestines The next part of the digestive system is the __small intestine__, which is a long, windy and thin tube that snakes its way around the lower part of your belly. Here the food is mixed with bile and other enzymes, which are created by the liver and pancreas, to break down the molecules in the food even further. Once the food has been turned into glucose, those molecules are absorbed by the wall of the small intestine and move into the blood, where they provide energy for the body. The small intestine also absorbs vitamins, minerals, simple fatty acids and amino acids. This is another slow, gradual process and takes 3 6 ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Friday night lights is something to look forward to for many high school students and community members. Being a varsity football cheerleader, I myself look forward to those nights, but, is playing for only one night a week and 10 weeks out of the year, worth risking your life for? Some think of football as one of the most harmful sports, considering all of the contact that is involved. With all of the things like blockings, holdings, sacks, and tackles, it would be hard for one to deny that. Since many have started to take these dangerous impacts that football may have on those who play into consideration, school administrators began asking, Should high schools drop football because too many players are getting hurt? Attempts to make changes to the roughness that comes along with playing football, trace all the way back to the 1900 s. Before that time, football was considered rugby, which was even more dangerous. In rugby, The results were predictable: smashed noses, dislocated shoulders, broken necks and fractured skulls. Dozens of young men died, mostly from cerebral hemorrhage (Zimmerman 2), which terrified many. Over time, the name rugby, eventually died out and later became known as football. Most people have a tendency to assume that when the minimum wage is increased people will benefit. They do not stop to think of the consequences that come from minimum wage increases. The general population merely assumes that people should make an adequate amount of income and never stop to consider the consequences, nor do they stop to consider alternatives. A rise in minimum wages is not necessarily the best approach to helping the poverty stricken individuals in this country. The following paper presents an overview of various problems concerning raising minimum wage, finding that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Poor The primary reason most people give for wanting to increase the minimum wage is that of helping poor people. There are many studies that indicate the benefits are just as numerous as the damage done. According to James Kaz, the majority of those who are paid minimum wage are not poor but rather one of at least one other income providers in a household. Most people working for minimum wage are teenagers...and those used to simply go work for almost nothing for some company or individual in the field they wanted their career . (Kaz02.html) It appears that the poor are done much more damage than good through minimum wage increases. Neumark et al. (1999) provide the following background in that regard: The lower employment occurs mainly because the increase in the cost of low skilled labor, relative to the cost of using other productive inputs (such as machinery or more skilled workers), leads employers away from using low skilled labor and toward these other inputs. This substitution effect is reinforced by the higher overall cost of production associated with the legislated increase in the wage for low skilled workers, which in turn raises the price of the product and results in less output sold. (NA) In addition, there are numerous workers who are adversely affected by a minimum wage change in the fact that they do not receive the full amount of the legislated increase. This is what happens to, say, an individual who ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
