Engine Of Evolution Chapter Summaries
Chapter 1 What Is Evolution?
In chapter one of the selected text given it goes over six main components being: evolution,
gradualism, speciation, common ancestry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanisms of
evolutionary change. These six components are broken down from the larger idea that life began with
one species and eventually broke off and evolved into many new and different branches of species.
Even in reading this, I do not believe that we all came from one species. I feel that evolution is true to
an extent that while species do evolve over time (which is the concept of gradualism) we did not all
evolve from one parasitic creature. To start simply the first component evolution in itself to me means
that overtime a creature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The main lesson of biogeography is that only evolution can explain the diversity of life on continents
and islands. (Coyne 109).In convergent evolution 3 of the six components discussed in chapter 1 are
working together. These 3 components are common ancestry, speciation, and natural selection. If
evolution did exist, ancestors of species today that lived in the same place, when dug up, should be
fossils that resemble organisms today.
Chapter 5 The Engine of Evolution In this chapter of the selected text for the course they talk of the
three things involved in adaptation. First and foremost, there has to be variation in the population,
second, the variation has to come from genes changes, and the third is that the genetic variation must
affect the probability of offspring. Evolution by selection is a combination of randomness and
lawfulness. (Coyne 118). I also learned that the only difference between natural selection and artificial
selection is that on one hand the changes occurring are being made to happen by a breeder (artificial)
whereas the other is random selection due to environmental and survival changes

Direct Animal Interactions
Organisms in our society are always interacting with one another on a daily basis. These interactions
impact the fate of the organisms lives, and that of the rest of the ecosystem. These interactions can
either be direct and indirect. A direct organism affects an organism without outside interferences,
while an indirect organism interaction is when an organism interacts an organism by its effects on a
third organism. The three different direct interactions are competition in which both organisms
interacting or negatively effect, mutualism in which both organisms benefit from the direct
interactions, and predation in which one organism benefits from the interaction while the other one
does not. Trophic cascades are found in ecological communities and directly impact the interactions of

will be examined. The Ulva would be expected to dominate over the Fucus distichus because the Ulva
is the superior space competitor. The Ulva grows and populates much faster, so would be able to take
over an area with no animals around. In an area with large herbivorous snails you would expect the
Fucus distichus to dominate because snails typically eat Ulva, allowing the Fucus distichus to
dominate because they have a chemical protection. In an area with a large crab population, you would
expect the Ulva sp. to dominate because the Asian shore crabs eat periwinkle snails, resulting in more
Ulva sp. because there won t be enough snails to eat them. If there is a presence of Asian shore crabs,
the Ulva sp. will dominate in a community over the Fucus distichus the Asian shore crab will eat the
periwinkle snail and allow for the ulva to prosper without the fear of a predator and dominate space

Albert Camus The Plague
What would you do if a plague epidemic infected your city? In the book, The Plague by Albert
Camus, a great sickness contaminates the city or Oran and numerous rats hurry into the open to die.
Eventually the authorities put the whole city under quarantine, which angered citizens. The story
begins with Dr. Bernard Rieux discovering a dead rat on the ground with blood spilling out of it s
mouth, then he finds many more lying out in the open. He assumes that either hunger has driven the
rodents out of hiding, or they were being pranked. As the rats continue to increase, Dr. Rieux contacts
the pest control. Dr. Rieux is introduced to M. Michel, whose arms and neck have swollen up
painfully, and later dies. That same day, he receives a phone call that his neighbor, Cottard, has
attempted to hang himself. But this is only the beginning, because the next few days were filled with
even more victims who have fallen in this unknown disease. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Rieux pleads with the medical association, begging them to at least put patients into isolation wards.
But his offer is rejected, because the Prefect has to issue the order. This disease takes the form of
extreme swelling on the necks and armpits, and most cases are fatal. For once the newspapers are
silent, and Castel predicts that the city government will reject the obvious. Because of the City s wait
and see approach, Dr. Rieux takes action and asks Paris for a plague serum, which I long in coming.
Instead of trying to find a cure for the illness, scientists waste time discussing whether the plague is

Essay On Flu Shot
The shot actually makes you sick
Usually, vaccinated children get sick after vaccination. This is because the flu virus has entered their
bodies and sensitizes it against it. And, what s more, the flu shot actually causes immunosuppression
weakened immunity.
They contain toxic ingredients like mercury
Mercury is a heavy metal with serious side effects like heart problems, digestive imbalance, loss of
memory, breathing problems, ADD, depression, etc.
The flu shot increases the chances of Alzheimer s

regularly vaccinated with the flu shot, had an increased risk of Alzheimer s by 10 times. This is a

Serious neurological disorders
The detrimental ingredients present in the vaccine can cause certain neurological problems. Namely,
in 1976 people who received the vaccine developed Guillain Barre Syndrome a permanent nerve
damage and paralysis.
Weakened immunological responses
There have been more than 1000 of journal articles pointing out the dangerous immunological
responses and other infections from the vaccine. Poor immunological response prevents the ability of
a person to prevent the diseases that the vaccine is supposed to fight against.
Higher risk of narcolepsy
A study showed that children from 12 countries developed narcolepsy after getting vaccinated. The
study also compared 3.3 million Swedes who got the shot, with 2.5 million who did not. The youngest
ones from the vaccinated group were at the highest risk.
More prone to pneumonia
When strains from the vaccine are injected in the body of a person with a poor immune system, they
cause serious side effects by impeding the health and increasing the chances of more serious
symptoms like pneumonia and other contagious illnesses as

Estella Lopez s Case Study
The trouble with her breathing began a few months after Estella Lopez moved to Barrio Logan. Lopez
is certain she knows why: At five or six in the morning, you start hearing heavy noise. Like machinery
working together. Like heavy metal banging. Lopez lives on Main Street in an affordable housing
complex. She is 37 but looks older. She speaks very little English and answers questions with the help
of an interpreter.
One of the things is, I can never open the windows in the apartment, because my children are
constantly sick. The little one, if we don t take care of her, she is going to develop asthma. Lopez s six
year old daughter shows signs of being in the disease s early stages. The doctor gave us a breathing
machine for her. That s why the windows are shut, so she can breathe clean air.
Lopez and her 13 year old daughter take pills as a part of barrio living. She roots through her handbag
and produces a small bottle filled with tablets. Loratadine, it says on the label, a drug which is
commonly used to treat allergies. The 13 year old is allergic to the dust in the air, she says. And I am
allergic to things like smoke in the air. The smoke that comes from the trucks and the contamination
they are creating. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
She says they used to pay closer to $1000 for a one bedroom apartment up on Ocean View Boulevard
in Southeast. Does she consider the nearly 50 percent cut in rent a decent trade for the reduced quality

Essay about Writers and Intellectuals in Exile
Writers and Intellectuals in Exile It may be that writers in my position, exiles... are haunted by some
sense of loss, some urge to reclaim, to look back, even at the risk of being mutated into pillars of salt 1
said Salman Rushdie. The loss and love of home is not what constitutes an exilic existence; what
actually and in true sense constitutes it is the chasm between carrying forth and leaving behind and
straddling the two different cultures from two different positions. In my paper, I propose to look at the
two sides of an exilic existence the negative that which has the horrors and trauma with reference to
Adorno and Said; and the positive, that which provides the intellectuals and writers a critical and
reflective insight, and here I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Exile in itself is a traumatic experience and becomes more aggravated owing to the formation of
strong opinionated groups based on the political affiliations or the social construct. Both Adorno and
Said enunciate this predicament of the exiles where isolation becomes so worse that exiled groups
start suspecting their own members. The moment the formation of politically directed groups begin to
take shape, the suspicion and hostility towards those branded as the members of others (Adorno, 33)
too simultaneously commences. Adorno says, The moment when you hope for the slightest sigh of the
same solidarity from them, or even mere sympathy for your own share of the social product of
suffering, they show you the cold shoulder (Adorno, 51 52). The displacements may in many ways be
a calamity and a catastrophe for many. But, there is another side to it too. It is a peculiar and also quite
a compelling point to note that many writers and intellectuals tend to outshine in their displaced
existence. It seems as if the changed environment, the one outside the country of residence acts as a
stimulant for them. The exile becomes a kind of rejuvenation so to say, for Victor Hugo fairly did
experience this change in his fifteen year exile on the island of Guernsey, where he penned some his
famous works. Such writings in the

Federal Reserve System Analysis
The Federal Reserve System regulates the economy of the United States through monetary policy. For
instance, the Fed keeps the federal fund rate low to provide lower mortgages, increases investments,
and boosts the economy. Alternatively, the Fed manages the economy when the opposite effects take
place. When the federal fund rate is high the mortgages increase, reduces investments, and will slow
the economy, which means the Fed has to manipulate the interest rates and try to shape economic
potentials for the future. There are 12 regional Federal Reserve Banks in the Federal Reserve System
which rely on an intrinsic technological infrastructure to keep the member banks connected and all
data comprised from all regions backed up in case of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The American people take precautions they see in their best interest when news of catastrophe and
possible economic unbalance is being reported. While the Board of Governors and the Fed Chair work
in the headquarters building, there is no actual fiscal work being done in this building. Therefore, there
will be no physical loss of stockpiles of money or securities. The biggest possible loss of assets would
be if the total catastrophe of the building took place with the Board of Governors in the building
resulting in the deaths of the seven board members and countless number of employees in the
building. Without the appointed board members, the Federal Reserve System may not have a backup
plan consisting of alternate board members to fill the role of the recently departed. Without a Board of
Governors to oversee the policies and practices of the banks, then more economic ruin could be on the
horizon. Who will be responsible for maintaining the economic flow that keeps interest rates down
and dollars circulating? This uncertainty will keep Americans from spending more than what is needed
for essentials, ultimately slowing the economy, and an absent Board of Governors and Chairman to
execute the plan to boost the economy. For instance, the Chairman of the Board of Governors not only
manage the member banks and presides over the Board of Governors, but also has to testify before
Congress twice a year. In the event that there was no contingency plan for an alternate Board of
Governors, the member bank presidents will have to oversee themselves until the President appoints
new members and Congress

The Dark Knight Essay
The Dark Knight is grimly magisterial. It s a summer blockbuster that contemplates near total civic
disaster: Crowds surge, tractor trailers flip, and buildings explode, but the pop violence feels heavy,
mournful. Light barely escapes the film s gravitational pull. Yet flitting through this 10 ton
expressionist murk is a diseased butterfly with stringy hair and a maniacal giggle. Played by a dead
actor, he s the most alive thing here. It s not quite fair to say that the late Heath Ledger steals The Dark
Knight from Christian Bale and the forces of (problematic) good, but, as the Joker, he is the movie s
animating principle and anarchic spark an unstoppable force colliding with the immovable objects of
Batman and director ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Confusion reigns in the opening scenes; loose threads abound toward the end (including one major
figure literally left hanging). Yet the generous midsection works as an agonized big muscle action film
about a conflicted superhero. As Bruce Wayne, Bale is gravely shallow, and he lacks the sense of fun
Robert Downey Jr. gave his obscenely rich playboy in Iron Man. Bruce uses his secret identity as a
hidden camera to glean information from the city s upper echelons, but he s not quite there otherwise.
This, oddly, is what makes him interesting, both to us and to assistant DA and ex girlfriend Rachel
Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, taking over from Katie Holmes and providing the character at last with a
spine and a brain). Batman s a whole other story. The filmmakers have worked out the mask problems
from the previous film; Bale fills the suit with grace and danger. His voice is disguised as well it s now
a bass heavy synthesized whisper. The character seems more than ever an extension of his high tech
toys (like the neat o Bat scooter that pops out of the Batmobile at one point, ecstatically rearing up like
the Lone Ranger s Silver). He represents a citizen s darkest urges, though, and it eats at him. He s
Dirty Harry crossed with Hamlet. The complicated plot involves Batman, Gordon, and Dent putting

School Uniforms Persuasive Essay
Can What You Wear Make a Difference?
If schools could automatically have more safety, a stronger sense of unity within students, and higher
self esteem for every individual student at a minimal cost without transgressing any laws, or stepping
over students rights it is doubtful that many would turn up their nose to all of these things. There is no
difference between this situation and the benefits that school dress codes would provide. While the
majority of public schools do not require uniforms, the ones that do report it as a large success (School
Uniform Statistics 3). In one study conducted by NAESP, 79 percent of principals said that school

Students who do not wear certain brands do not feel left out, and everyone feels like they belong, so
school uniforms should be mandatory.
Secondly, nearly every student has had mornings in which they take an extended amount of time
debating what to wear. Why is this? Students want to wear what is in to avoid judgment. This is just
one of countless examples of how lower self esteem is associated with no uniforms. One survey in
Nevada stated that fifty four percent of students wearing uniforms either Agreed or Strongly agreed
that they still have their identities when wearing uniforms (Riley 3). School uniforms give students a
higher self esteem. In class, students are less focused on what they are wearing and if they will blend
in. By not feeling pressured to dress a certain way, this contributes to students confidence. This gives
Teachers an environment easier to teach in, and students an easier environment to learn in (Daniels 3).
By giving students a higher self esteem, they become more alert during class, also creating an easier
environment to teach in. Multiple studies have shown that this reflects in students grades. Not only
would students feel better about themselves, but uniforms would reduce both stress and peer pressure
among students, which leads to higher esteem and school success. Next, it is a common argument in
the school uniforms debate that they supposedly go against the rights of students by

Essay about Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society
Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society Throughout history, the roles of women and men have always
differed to some degree. In ancient Greece, the traditional roles were clear cut and defined. Women
stayed home to care for children and do housework while men left to work. This system of society was
not too far off the hunter gatherer concept where women cared for the house and the men hunted.
Intriguingly enough, despite the customary submissive role, women had a more multifaceted role and
image in society as juxtaposed with the rather simple role men played. Morals for the two were also
different. Men obviously had the upper hand with women being the traditional passive. For an
example, it was quite acceptable for a man to commit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As shown, women were considered naturally submissive as in most other old cultures. This is
somewhat understandable as women were the ones who bore children and men provided for the family
unit. As time progressed, this stereotype was over emphasized into what is portrayed in these plays
and poems. Despite this submissive image, Greek women were not considered naïve, but a pleasurable
if a bit foolish kind of a creature. In Aristophane?s play, Lysistrata, this concept is amply portrayed.
Most of the women are portrayed, as impulsive individuals while men are carnal gluttons.
Notwithstanding this facet of their image women could also be wily as Medea and Lysistrata: ?What is
more, you were born a woman, And women, though most helpless in doing good deeds, Are of every
evil the cleverest of contrives? The deceitful female is epitomized by the character of Aphrodite in
Euripidies?s Hippolytus. Due to having her altar neglected (as in the case of Psyche) she plotted to
bring ruin to Hippolytus and all those who loved him. At the end of the play, Artemis plots revenge
against Aphrodite (also called Cypris) saying: ?Hush, that is enough! You shall not be unavenged,
Cypris shall find the angry shafts she hurls Against you for you?re your piety and innocence Shall cost
her dear. I?ll wait until she loves a mortal next time, And with this hand?with these unerring arrows

Short Story About The Movie The Blob Of Blue Ink
I stayed in my bed, still in tears, imagining all of the stuff I would have done if I could just stay in
California. I heard Mom talking about what she s going to do in Costa Rica, what kind of research she
s going to do, blah blah blah. Then I heard something about funding two plane tickets. I looked up for
a minute, then I just put my head back down cause I was too lazy to even think about it. After about
three minutes, I got up and grabbed the index card with the short story I wrote. The blob of blue ink, I
already knew what was behind it. Opportunity. Opportunity, for me? Or for Mom? I decided to grab

Tuesday came around. On Sunday and Monday, I told all of my friends that I can t do anything with
them over the next two months because I was going to Costa Rica. They all had the same reaction I
had when I saw the plane tickets. Jaws dropped, eyes wide, and hands on their heads. Even though we
had an international airport in San Diego, we had to go to Los Angeles because that s the densest in
terms of the people that work with Mom. I dreaded long car rides. Mom said that it would be about
forty five minutes to get there, but as always, California traffic. I had butterflies in my stomach when I
heard about the flight, just not the car ride. So Izzy, what do you want to do once we get there? Mom
asked. Maybe we could go sightseeing or ziplining through the woods! I exclaimed. Just from that
alone, my face lit up even more and a big smile was on my face. Soon after that though, I felt like a
kid that was grounded. I think my excitement had overridden my boredom because my eyes would
close, then a bolt of energy, or excitement, surged through my body, keeping me awake. The honks of
the cars kept me awake as well. I love California for the waves and the beaches, but the traffic and the
busy streets are what get me. After the long hour, we finally found a spot where we can park our
rental. Then, we checked in through security and boarded the plane. The service people were one of
the nicest people in the world. Since I

Poetry as a Reflection of The Inner Being
Alfred Tennyson gifted the Victorian Era, and the literary world with two iconic poems. The author
explored the themes of personal development and culture clash in one of his most famous poems,
Ulysses . Tennyson also discovered and analyzed the themes of love and death through his renowned
and eminent poem, Tears Idle, Tears . The poet was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire in 1809 in the East
Lindy district of England. Tennyson experienced numerous amounts of difficulties in his childhood
and growing adolescent phases that spilled into his adult life. These trials and tribulations became a
foundation and source of inspiration for Tennyson, who used them as a stimulus and catalyst to aide
his literary progress and ideas. Two of the most ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thirdly, although Tennyson was engaged to Emily Sell wood...the condition of his health resulted in
their separation (Napierkowski and Rose 273). The poet is unable to maintain relationships even with
his fiancé, which drives him to dissect the ideas of love and death in his poems. But the negative
brought a sliver of positive, without the anguish at the loss of a friend, Tennyson would have never
written...his greatest poem (Padgett 93). This validates that the author s life experiences contributed to
his writings, and were implanted into his tone, themes, words and stylistic decisions. His characters
can also be seen as a mirror reflection of Tennyson s deeper and underlying being.
Overall Tennyson was a perfect mold to the ideals and thoughts of society in the Victorian Era. He
opposed the new scientific knowledge that created a drift from traditionalism. He was rooted in the old
style, organic beliefs that the Victorian era was ferociously trying to preserve, as new technology and
scientific inventions and theories were being developed. The Victorian era was characterized by many
qualities such as smugness, narrow mindedness, bourgeoisie, materialism, faith in social progress and
priggish morality (Galens 380). Society maintained a sense of pride and confidence in themselves.
These ideals can be witnessed in Tennyson s poems which are a ...typical example of Victorian
smugness (Bloom 20). A sense of smugness is also paralleled

Fight Or Flight Response Theory
Fear is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to
cause pain, or a threat. There is a very great variety as to the degree of fear and trouble that persons
are exercised with before they obtain any comfortable evidence of pardon and acceptance with God.
Fear is something that can result into a persons reaction or inaction. An example of this is Fight or
flight this was first described in the 1920s by American physiologist Walter Cannon. The fight or flight
response, or the acute stress response, refers to a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of
something that is terrifying, either mentally or physically. The response is triggered by the release of
hormones that prepare your body to either stay and deal with a threat or to run away to safety. The
fight or flight response realized that a chain of rapidly occurring reactions inside the body helped to
mobilize the body s resources to deal with threatening circumstances.Today the fight or flight response
is recognized as part of the first stage of Hans Selye s general adaptation syndrome, a theory
describing the stress response.
Though fear is a negative emotion the concept of the use of fear can be both negative and positive in
its relationship to society. Fear is usually a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

hundreds of advertisements each day with each ad specifically placed to maximize exposure to its
potential target market. In the internet age, consumers are targeted more than ever. The following
paper details four products or services and the targeting strategies behind them. These products and
services are: Netflix, Apple s iPhone 7+, Edushape s Marublous Marble Run, and Chobani yogurt.
Netflix is an on demand, subscription based streaming service that allows subscribers to instantly

Binge watching is a popular term to describe how consumers interact with the service (Jenner, 2016).
This is due to how Netflix has differentiated itself from its competitors, especially early on. Netflix
was at the forefront of internet content streaming. The service allows viewers to watch high quality
content whenever and wherever they want. This was a huge change from before when consumers had
to subscribe to content channels such as HBO or Showtime through their cable provider and wait for a
show they like to come on. Netflix s competitors are Hulu and Amazon Prime, but Netflix is the clear
leader in the content streaming market. The iPhone 7+ targets its market by offering a top of the line
smart phone that is equipped with an efficient operating system. Their main competitor in the market
is Samsung. Apple has not done much in recent years to compete with Samsung, even purchasing
Samsung displays for their upcoming iPhone 8. However, in comparison to other competitors, the
iPhone 7+ positions itself by offering one of the best cameras, stereo quality speakers, and an HD
display. Edushape s Marublous Marble Run is more of a niche product. The product s overall design is
unique and that alone differentiates itself in the toy market. However, the product s design does not aid
in its positioning. The marble run competes with many other building toys such as Legos. The toy

Shopping Experience With Sprouts Farmer s Market Essay
I split my food shopping between a suburban enclave in Franklin, TN and my parent s country house
in Columbia, TN. There are a multitude of lifestyle discrepancies between suburban and country
living, and I suspected that this would be evident in the retail food options offered. Columbia grocery
stores are either large big box grocers or small regional stores. These stores historically service more
conventional food options. Franklin s larger and more affluent population allows for more diversity in
alternative and health food stores. I chose to observe a local Kroger Grocery Store in Columbia, and
contrasted that shopping experience with Sprouts Farmer s Market in Franklin. The separate shopping
experiences elucidated that retail food options are contingent on the expectations, comprehension and
financial flexibility of the customers and the stores. I visited the Kroger Grocery Store around eight on
Sunday morning. The patron demographic was primarily older than 55 and African American. The
store has provided groceries for the community for at least fifteen years. The store was clean and
organized, but there was a slight dingy appearance that comes with older stores. The store has been
remodeled and remerchandised, but the dark lighting and worn floors disclose the stores true age.
When you walk into the store you are greeted by a large produce and floral section. The store follows
popular produce planograms with overflowing fruits and vegetable stacked into

India s Security Role Exercises Diplomatic leverage in...
Although India rejected all multilateral attempts which can increase the diplomatic power of the US
alliance in the region, India has established bilateral agreement with a large number of state actors in
order to engage closer relationship. However, it is important to note that such emerging relationship is
not an alliance, but a strategic partnership. Schaffer determines that India is currently aiming at a
selective and strategic partnership which starting with common interests that both sides can pursue
without too much strain and expanding, as both countries develop the habit of working together is
more sensible . Thus, some view India would play a crucial role in balancing China due to rising

The SCO was established in 2001 with six members of China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan,
Tajikistan and Uzbekistan to emphasize on harmony and cooperation against the three evils
extremism, separatism and terrorism in response to regional characteristics of terrorist activities and
secessionist movements. It also expanded its role with increasing inclusions of dialogue partners and
observer members like India and Afghanistan. Despite India s observer status, India has conducted
several joint military exercises and increased trade cooperation with Central Asian countries like
Tajikistan by claiming itself as strategic partnership. In 2013, an Indian Foreign Secretary Sujatha
Singh expressed its willingness to become a full fledged member of the SCO during the Council of
Heads of Government meeting in Tashkent by addressing two main issues; its commitment in
reconstruction of Afghanistan as a member of the SCO; and the inalienable rights of all states to use
nuclear energy for peaceful purposes in accordance with international norms and obligations .
Although some perceive that cooperation on Afghanistan could serve to bring the three states more
closer in terms of their mutual contributions to security in Asia Pacific, it seems the strategic

Machiavelli And Plato Essay
Niccolio Machiavelli (Born May 3rd, 1469 amp;#8211; 1527 Florence, Italy.) His writings have been
the source of dispute amongst scholars due to the ambiguity of his analogy of the amp;#8216;Nature
of Politics ; and the implication of morality. The Prince, has been criticised due to it amp;#8217;s
seemingly amoral political suggestiveness, however after further scrutiny of other works such as The
Discourses, one can argue that it was Machiavelli amp;#8217;s intention to infact imply a positive
political morality. Therefore the question needs to be posed. Is Machiavelli a political amoralist? To
successfully answer this it is essential to analyse his version of political structure to establish a
possible bias. It would also be beneficial ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is essential prior to judgement on whether Machiavelli is a political amoralist or not to take into
account The Discourses and the essence of their meaning. The Prince alone I grant can be mistaken for
a how to be a tyrant handbook with it amp;#8217;s absolute theories and some what lack of civility,
where amp;#8220;the end justifies the means ;. But it amp;#8217;s intention is assuming the political

one in the position of leadership. amp;#8220;Everybody sees what you appear to be,few feel what you
are,and those few will not dare to oppose themselves to the many, who have the majesty of the state to
defend them;and in the actions of men,and especially of princes, from which there is no appeal, the end
justifies the means ; amp;#8220;Thus it is well to seem merciful, faithful humane, sincere, religious and
also to be so. ; Effectively what seems as ruling with an iron fist is best expressed in terms of need.
The 16th Century political unrest Machiavelli is influenced by would best be unified by such absolute

The Impact Of Technological Development On The Growth And...
Distribution had always been costly process for the tourism industry until technology was introduced.
Technological development in the tourism industry of distribution systems consists of three main
stages from the evolution and development of airline reservation systems (ARS), computer reservation
systems such as SABRE and global distribution systems (GDS) that are now currently in place. The
roles of these distributors and stages will be assessed. The impacts of the growth and development of
distribution via the internet causes global distribution system companies to create changes in their
business models to adapt to the evolution of new technology.
Before any technological systems, airlines took the initiative to create systems to solve issues such as
informing possible passengers about whether or not they are able to book a seat. This process was
very slow and required a lot of work to be done manually, bookings were usually made through
telegrams, letters or even over the phone. The lack of direct communication between customers and
airlines caused problems with over booking seats and under booking seats for a certain flight
(Copeland, D and Mckenney, J. 1988). This made office jobs at airlines more labour intensive and
stressful. Neither efficient for the customer nor the service provider. Therefore airlines created the card
system, each airline office in each city would have a boards on the wall for particular flights which
then had slots to represent the number of

Effects of external environment on company s strategy
Introduction:
The development of any organization require new ways of orientation of a business, requires
organization to adapt to environmental changes inside and outside the action. The purpose of external
assessment is to prosper a limited list of an opportunities and threats that should be avoided. External
assessment is not aimed at developing an extensive list of every possible factor that could affect the
business. External environment of an organizations are factors that affect the company s ability to
function. The importance of external environment and their effect on the expansion of marketing
planning is crucial and should be reviewed by an organization wising to be profitable in the market. A
firm should have a mind that effective marketing strategies could not be developed without the
analysis of external environment in which the company operates. The external environment for a
company covers many aspects such as macro environment and micro environment. The macro
environment consists of forces such as social, political and technological and micro environment

Anesthesia In Civil War
In the 1860s, disease was a very big issue within the Civil War hospitals. Of every soldier who had
died in battle, two had died with disease. One of the treatments used in the Civil War was the usage of
anesthesia and chloroform. Aputations were made to those soldiers with the most untreatable wounds.
It s important to understand that the hospitals back then weren t the cleanest, and in no way looked
like the hospitals we have today. Civil war hospitals didn t save as many lives as you would have
expected. Since civil war hospitals had only a couple of procedures and very little medicine; the
soldiers relied on grit and chance, not medicine to cure them. One of the techniques doctors in civil
war hospitals used was a drug called anesthesia. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the Civil War, hospitals were unsanitary and crowded with many hospital beds full of patients. The
army relied on male nurses more than female nurses even though most of them were untrained (
Hospitals, Surgeons, 2002). Surgeons in the Civil war usually didn t really have clue what they were
doing. Nobody knows what antiseptics were used, or that they know the relation of dirt to infection (
Hospitals, Surgeons, 2002). Most physicians had a very limited understanding of the importance of
sterilization and the risks of infection, and little practice treating the kinds of major cases seen during
the war. ( History of Medicine, 2011). Plus, anesthesia came into use halfway through the Civil War,
and some drugs were inadequate ( Hospitals, Surgeons, 2002). Perhaps the least unreliable statistics
for the Union armies give 67,000 killed in action, 43,000 died of wounds, and 224,000 died of disease;
an additional 24,000 are listed as dead from other causes doubtless either wounds Or disease. (
Hospitals, Surgeons, 2002). The hospitals beds were packed so close together that disease that was
caught by one veteran could have been caught by another and passed on. The sanitation of Civil War
hospitals and the lack of medicine needed for veterans was abysmal. But for these hospitals being in
the condition they were in, lives were still able to be saved and recover from their

The Alternative Forms Of Tourism
Travel with Meaning
Do you enjoy traveling, either domestically or abroad? Do you walk, bike, drive, or take any
transportation while you travel? If you do, have you ever thought about the way that you travel can
actually affect the destination socially, economically, culturally and environmentally? These are
questions that you should ask yourself if you want to become a sustainable traveler. There are ways to
make your travel more sustainable and responsible by making the right choice from the modes of
transportation, to the place you are staying, to the activities that you do, and many more. This paper
will discuss about alternative forms of tourism, such as sustainable travel, adventure travel and
volunteer travel that give a purpose to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Based on the most recent annual report published by the World Tourism Organization, over one billion
people travel around the world and the number continues to grow every year. In the year 2013, a 5%
growth is shown and it is expected to increase in the following years. While such growth has produced
benefits such as employments, business opportunities, and increased revenues from exports and
services, mass tourism is often questioned because of its contribution to negative impacts to the travel
destinations in their economic, social, cultural, and physical environment ( Why Tourism, 2015).
Depending on the intensity of traveler site use, the destination can easily ran out of the facilitation and
resources necessary to accommodate the travelers, and let alone the local residents. In order to fulfill
the increased traveler demands, developers will have to construct more hotels and facilities, which
may involve buying lands and getting additional resources. In doing so, the developers may over
exploit the very environment that attracts travelers and change the destination s character. They can
transform the natural environment into an artificial attraction and this may not only impact the daily
lives of the local, but also the economy and unique culture of the destination.
According to Sustainable Travel International, the issues that

IFDM Communication Systems
OFDM is a great technique to handle impairments of wireless communication channels such as
multipath propagation. Hence, OFDM is a practical candidate for future 4G wireless communications
techniques [1] [4]. On the other hand, one of the major drawbacks of the OFDM communication
system is the drift in reference carrier. The offset present in received carrier will lose orthogonality
among the carriers. Hence, the CFO causes a reduction of desired signal amplitude in the output
decision variable and introduces ICI. Then it brings up an increase of BER. The effect caused by CFO
for OFDM system was analyzed in [7] [9]. In [7] BER upper bound of OFDM system is analyzed
without ICI self cancellation and BER of OFDM system is analyzed using self cancellation, but this
method is less accurate. In [9], it is indicated that CFO should be less than 2% of the bandwidth of the
sub channel to guarantee the signal to interference ratio to be higher than 30 dB. A critically sampled
OFDM system/OQAM system is also not robust to CFO [9], even when optimal pulses are used as
shaping filters. Thus, carrier frequency offset greatly degrades system performance. Therefore,
practical OFDM systems need the CFO to be compensated with sufficient accuracy, and this has led to
a whole lot of literature on CFO estimation algorithms. Most of the existing CFO estimators for
OFDM are based on periodically transmitted pilot symbols. Yet, the pilot symbols transmission loses a
significant bandwidth,

Evaluating the Levels of Processing Theory Essay
Evaluating the Levels of Processing Theory
The levels of Processing theory was put forward in 1972 by Craik and Lockhart. This theory came
about after they criticised the Multi store model of memory saying it was too simplistic and
descriptive rather that actually explaining the model. This theory was an alternative to the Multi store
model as it replaces the idea of Short term and Log term memory. Levels of processing theory
believes that information can be processed at different levels at the same time. The deeper the
information is processed, the more likely it will be remembered.

damaged a part of his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The depth of the information go from shallow to deep processing. The levels are made up of structural
processing which are upper and lower class letters, Phonetic or sound processing which are rhyming
words and lastly semantic processing which is about the meanings of the words. The experiment done
in our lesson was about different types of processing. Results of that showed that the semantic
processing was the one that we had processed the deepest as we had to actually recognise and process
the words into our long term memory, and not just based on the appearance of the word. When
information is first processed, it goes to the sensory memory. From there if the information I attended
to, it will be processed into the short term memory and if not it will probably be lost. If information
from the short term memory is rehearsed, it will be processed into the long term memory where it can
stay for up to a lifetime. There are two types of rehearsal which are used in different ways of
remembering information. These are called elaborative rehearsal and maintenance rehearsal.
Maintenance rehearsal involves purely repeating the information over and over again, whereas
elaborative rehearsal involves doing something with the material a you repeat it,

What Is My Life Reflection Essay
During the 16 weeks that I ve participated in this yoga class, I ve learned the importance of belly
breathing and meditating. I decided to take this course this semester, because my psychiatrist actually
suggested I take yoga as a way of coping with my stress and anxiety. I initially did not think that it
would work, but we my psychiatrist and I noticed my stress and anxiety slowing diminishing. This
semester I took Chemistry 32A, Human Anatomy, and Hatha Yoga, while playing for the school s
women s basketball team. I feel that me playing basketball bought structure to my life, because it
made me organize my priorities. When we traveled, our coach enforced study hall and I was given
time to study and do homework. One stressor I have from playing on the school team is that I m the
team captain and I m expected from coach to lead. It can be stressful leading a group of girls who don
t respect my opinion or voice. However, it s even more stressful when my coaches press me to be a
better leader when it s not entirely my fault. I also work at Olive Garden as a server. The stressors of
working as a server is the high expectations my managers have for us. One of the expectations is that
our server score be 100% every time we work. But it s difficult to get a perfect score, because it is
rated out of 5 and anything below a 5 is actually considered a 0. It s common that not everyone
receives a perfect score every time they work, but it s not easy having a higher up yell at you when

  • 4. Engine Of Evolution Chapter Summaries Chapter 1 What Is Evolution? In chapter one of the selected text given it goes over six main components being: evolution, gradualism, speciation, common ancestry, natural selection, and nonselective mechanisms of evolutionary change. These six components are broken down from the larger idea that life began with one species and eventually broke off and evolved into many new and different branches of species. Even in reading this, I do not believe that we all came from one species. I feel that evolution is true to an extent that while species do evolve over time (which is the concept of gradualism) we did not all evolve from one parasitic creature. To start simply the first component evolution in itself to me means that overtime a creature ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The main lesson of biogeography is that only evolution can explain the diversity of life on continents and islands. (Coyne 109).In convergent evolution 3 of the six components discussed in chapter 1 are working together. These 3 components are common ancestry, speciation, and natural selection. If evolution did exist, ancestors of species today that lived in the same place, when dug up, should be fossils that resemble organisms today. Chapter 5 The Engine of Evolution In this chapter of the selected text for the course they talk of the three things involved in adaptation. First and foremost, there has to be variation in the population, second, the variation has to come from genes changes, and the third is that the genetic variation must affect the probability of offspring. Evolution by selection is a combination of randomness and lawfulness. (Coyne 118). I also learned that the only difference between natural selection and artificial selection is that on one hand the changes occurring are being made to happen by a breeder (artificial) whereas the other is random selection due to environmental and survival changes ... These interactions impact the fate of the organisms lives, and that of the rest of the ecosystem. These interactions can either be direct and indirect. A direct organism affects an organism without outside interferences, while an indirect organism interaction is when an organism interacts an organism by its effects on a third organism. The three different direct interactions are competition in which both organisms interacting or negatively effect, mutualism in which both organisms benefit from the direct interactions, and predation in which one organism benefits from the interaction while the other one does not. The Ulva grows and populates much faster, so would be able to take over an area with no animals around. In an area with large herbivorous snails you would expect the Fucus distichus to dominate because snails typically eat Ulva, allowing the Fucus distichus to dominate because they have a chemical protection. In an area with a large crab population, you would expect the Ulva sp. to dominate because the Asian shore crabs eat periwinkle snails, resulting in more Ulva sp. because there won t be enough snails to eat them. • 6. Albert Camus The Plague What would you do if a plague epidemic infected your city? In the book, The Plague by Albert Camus, a great sickness contaminates the city or Oran and numerous rats hurry into the open to die. Eventually the authorities put the whole city under quarantine, which angered citizens. The story begins with Dr. Bernard Rieux discovering a dead rat on the ground with blood spilling out of it s mouth, then he finds many more lying out in the open. He assumes that either hunger has driven the rodents out of hiding, or they were being pranked. As the rats continue to increase, Dr. Rieux contacts the pest control. Dr. Rieux is introduced to M. Michel, whose arms and neck have swollen up painfully, and later dies. That same day, he receives a phone call that his neighbor, Cottard, has attempted to hang himself. But this is only the beginning, because the next few days were filled with even more victims who have fallen in this unknown disease. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Lopez is certain she knows why: At five or six in the morning, you start hearing heavy noise. Like machinery working together. Like heavy metal banging. Lopez lives on Main Street in an affordable housing complex. She is 37 but looks older. She speaks very little English and answers questions with the help of an interpreter. One of the things is, I can never open the windows in the apartment, because my children are constantly sick. The little one, if we don t take care of her, she is going to develop asthma. Lopez s six year old daughter shows signs of being in the disease s early stages. The doctor gave us a breathing machine for her. That s why the windows are shut, so she can breathe clean air. Lopez and her 13 year old daughter take pills as a part of barrio living. She roots through her handbag and produces a small bottle filled with tablets. Loratadine, it says on the label, a drug which is commonly used to treat allergies. The 13 year old is allergic to the dust in the air, she says. And I am allergic to things like smoke in the air. • 10. Essay about Writers and Intellectuals in Exile Writers and Intellectuals in Exile It may be that writers in my position, exiles... are haunted by some sense of loss, some urge to reclaim, to look back, even at the risk of being mutated into pillars of salt 1 said Salman Rushdie. The loss and love of home is not what constitutes an exilic existence; what actually and in true sense constitutes it is the chasm between carrying forth and leaving behind and straddling the two different cultures from two different positions. In my paper, I propose to look at the two sides of an exilic existence the negative that which has the horrors and trauma with reference to Adorno and Said; and the positive, that which provides the intellectuals and writers a critical and reflective insight, and here I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Exile in itself is a traumatic experience and becomes more aggravated owing to the formation of strong opinionated groups based on the political affiliations or the social construct. Both Adorno and Said enunciate this predicament of the exiles where isolation becomes so worse that exiled groups start suspecting their own members. The moment the formation of politically directed groups begin to take shape, the suspicion and hostility towards those branded as the members of others (Adorno, 33) too simultaneously commences. Adorno says, The moment when you hope for the slightest sigh of the same solidarity from them, or even mere sympathy for your own share of the social product of suffering, they show you the cold shoulder (Adorno, 51 52). The displacements may in many ways be a calamity and a catastrophe for many. But, there is another side to it too. It is a peculiar and also quite a compelling point to note that many writers and intellectuals tend to outshine in their displaced existence. It seems as if the changed environment, the one outside the country of residence acts as a stimulant for them. The exile becomes a kind of rejuvenation so to say, for Victor Hugo fairly did experience this change in his fifteen year exile on the island of Guernsey, where he penned some his famous works. • 11. Federal Reserve System Analysis The Federal Reserve System regulates the economy of the United States through monetary policy. For instance, the Fed keeps the federal fund rate low to provide lower mortgages, increases investments, and boosts the economy. Alternatively, the Fed manages the economy when the opposite effects take place. When the federal fund rate is high the mortgages increase, reduces investments, and will slow the economy, which means the Fed has to manipulate the interest rates and try to shape economic potentials for the future. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The American people take precautions they see in their best interest when news of catastrophe and possible economic unbalance is being reported. While the Board of Governors and the Fed Chair work in the headquarters building, there is no actual fiscal work being done in this building. Therefore, there will be no physical loss of stockpiles of money or securities. The biggest possible loss of assets would be if the total catastrophe of the building took place with the Board of Governors in the building resulting in the deaths of the seven board members and countless number of employees in the building. Without the appointed board members, the Federal Reserve System may not have a backup plan consisting of alternate board members to fill the role of the recently departed. Without a Board of Governors to oversee the policies and practices of the banks, then more economic ruin could be on the horizon. Who will be responsible for maintaining the economic flow that keeps interest rates down and dollars circulating? This uncertainty will keep Americans from spending more than what is needed for essentials, ultimately slowing the economy, and an absent Board of Governors and Chairman to execute the plan to boost the economy. For instance, the Chairman of the Board of Governors not only manage the member banks and presides over the Board of Governors, but also has to testify before Congress twice a year. In the event that there was no contingency plan for an alternate Board of Governors, the member bank presidents will have to oversee themselves until the President appoints new members and Congress ... • 12. The Dark Knight Essay The Dark Knight is grimly magisterial. It s a summer blockbuster that contemplates near total civic disaster: Crowds surge, tractor trailers flip, and buildings explode, but the pop violence feels heavy, mournful. Light barely escapes the film s gravitational pull. Yet flitting through this 10 ton expressionist murk is a diseased butterfly with stringy hair and a maniacal giggle. Played by a dead actor, he s the most alive thing here. It s not quite fair to say that the late Heath Ledger steals The Dark Knight from Christian Bale and the forces of (problematic) good, but, as the Joker, he is the movie s animating principle and anarchic spark an unstoppable force colliding with the immovable objects of Batman and director ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Confusion reigns in the opening scenes; loose threads abound toward the end (including one major figure literally left hanging). Yet the generous midsection works as an agonized big muscle action film about a conflicted superhero. As Bruce Wayne, Bale is gravely shallow, and he lacks the sense of fun Robert Downey Jr. gave his obscenely rich playboy in Iron Man. Bruce uses his secret identity as a hidden camera to glean information from the city s upper echelons, but he s not quite there otherwise. This, oddly, is what makes him interesting, both to us and to assistant DA and ex girlfriend Rachel Dawes (Maggie Gyllenhaal, taking over from Katie Holmes and providing the character at last with a spine and a brain). Batman s a whole other story. The filmmakers have worked out the mask problems from the previous film; Bale fills the suit with grace and danger. His voice is disguised as well it s now a bass heavy synthesized whisper. The character seems more than ever an extension of his high tech toys (like the neat o Bat scooter that pops out of the Batmobile at one point, ecstatically rearing up like the Lone Ranger s Silver). He represents a citizen s darkest urges, though, and it eats at him. He s Dirty Harry crossed with Hamlet. If schools could automatically have more safety, a stronger sense of unity within students, and higher self esteem for every individual student at a minimal cost without transgressing any laws, or stepping over students rights it is doubtful that many would turn up their nose to all of these things. There is no difference between this situation and the benefits that school dress codes would provide. While the majority of public schools do not require uniforms, the ones that do report it as a large success (School Uniform Statistics 3). Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Students who do not wear certain brands do not feel left out, and everyone feels like they belong, so school uniforms should be mandatory. Secondly, nearly every student has had mornings in which they take an extended amount of time debating what to wear. Why is this? Students want to wear what is in to avoid judgment. This is just one of countless examples of how lower self esteem is associated with no uniforms. One survey in Nevada stated that fifty four percent of students wearing uniforms either Agreed or Strongly agreed that they still have their identities when wearing uniforms (Riley 3). School uniforms give students a higher self esteem. In class, students are less focused on what they are wearing and if they will blend in. By not feeling pressured to dress a certain way, this contributes to students confidence. This gives Teachers an environment easier to teach in, and students an easier environment to learn in (Daniels 3). By giving students a higher self esteem, they become more alert during class, also creating an easier environment to teach in. Multiple studies have shown that this reflects in students grades. Not only would students feel better about themselves, but uniforms would reduce both stress and peer pressure among students, which leads to higher esteem and school success. • 14. Essay about Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society Gender Roles in Ancient Greek Society Throughout history, the roles of women and men have always differed to some degree. In ancient Greece, the traditional roles were clear cut and defined. Women stayed home to care for children and do housework while men left to work. This system of society was not too far off the hunter gatherer concept where women cared for the house and the men hunted. Intriguingly enough, despite the customary submissive role, women had a more multifaceted role and image in society as juxtaposed with the rather simple role men played. Morals for the two were also different. Men obviously had the upper hand with women being the traditional passive. For an example, it was quite acceptable for a man to commit ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As shown, women were considered naturally submissive as in most other old cultures. This is somewhat understandable as women were the ones who bore children and men provided for the family unit. As time progressed, this stereotype was over emphasized into what is portrayed in these plays and poems. Despite this submissive image, Greek women were not considered naïve, but a pleasurable if a bit foolish kind of a creature. In Aristophane?s play, Lysistrata, this concept is amply portrayed. Most of the women are portrayed, as impulsive individuals while men are carnal gluttons. Notwithstanding this facet of their image women could also be wily as Medea and Lysistrata: ?What is more, you were born a woman, And women, though most helpless in doing good deeds, Are of every evil the cleverest of contrives? The deceitful female is epitomized by the character of Aphrodite in Euripidies?s Hippolytus. Due to having her altar neglected (as in the case of Psyche) she plotted to bring ruin to Hippolytus and all those who loved him. At the end of the play, Artemis plots revenge against Aphrodite (also called Cypris) saying: ?Hush, that is enough! You shall not be unavenged, Cypris shall find the angry shafts she hurls Against you for you?re your piety and innocence Shall cost her dear. Even though we had an international airport in San Diego, we had to go to Los Angeles because that s the densest in terms of the people that work with Mom. I dreaded long car rides. Mom said that it would be about forty five minutes to get there, but as always, California traffic. I had butterflies in my stomach when I heard about the flight, just not the car ride. So Izzy, what do you want to do once we get there? Mom asked. Maybe we could go sightseeing or ziplining through the woods! I exclaimed. I think my excitement had overridden my boredom because my eyes would close, then a bolt of energy, or excitement, surged through my body, keeping me awake. The honks of the cars kept me awake as well. I love California for the waves and the beaches, but the traffic and the busy streets are what get me. The author explored the themes of personal development and culture clash in one of his most famous poems, Ulysses . The poet was born in Somersby, Lincolnshire in 1809 in the East Lindy district of England. He opposed the new scientific knowledge that created a drift from traditionalism. There is a very great variety as to the degree of fear and trouble that persons are exercised with before they obtain any comfortable evidence of pardon and acceptance with God. Fear is something that can result into a persons reaction or inaction. An example of this is Fight or flight this was first described in the 1920s by American physiologist Walter Cannon. The fight or flight response, or the acute stress response, refers to a physiological reaction that occurs in the presence of something that is terrifying, either mentally or physically. The response is triggered by the release of hormones that prepare your body to either stay and deal with a threat or to run away to safety. The fight or flight response realized that a chain of rapidly occurring reactions inside the body helped to mobilize the body s resources to deal with threatening circumstances.Today the fight or flight response is recognized as part of the first stage of Hans Selye s general adaptation syndrome, a theory describing the stress response. Franklin s larger and more affluent population allows for more diversity in alternative and health food stores. • 31. IFDM Communication Systems OFDM is a great technique to handle impairments of wireless communication channels such as multipath propagation. Hence, OFDM is a practical candidate for future 4G wireless communications techniques [1] [4]. On the other hand, one of the major drawbacks of the OFDM communication system is the drift in reference carrier. The offset present in received carrier will lose orthogonality among the carriers. Hence, the CFO causes a reduction of desired signal amplitude in the output decision variable and introduces ICI. Then it brings up an increase of BER. The effect caused by CFO for OFDM system was analyzed in [7] [9]. In [7] BER upper bound of OFDM system is analyzed without ICI self cancellation and BER of OFDM system is analyzed using self cancellation, but this method is less accurate. In [9], it is indicated that CFO should be less than 2% of the bandwidth of the sub channel to guarantee the signal to interference ratio to be higher than 30 dB. A critically sampled OFDM system/OQAM system is also not robust to CFO [9], even when optimal pulses are used as shaping filters. Thus, carrier frequency offset greatly degrades system performance. Therefore, practical OFDM systems need the CFO to be compensated with sufficient accuracy, and this has led to a whole lot of literature on CFO estimation algorithms. Most of the existing CFO estimators for OFDM are based on periodically transmitted pilot symbols. Yet, the pilot symbols transmission loses a significant bandwidth, ... Results of that showed that the semantic processing was the one that we had processed the deepest as we had to actually recognise and process the words into our long term memory, and not just based on the appearance of the word.
