Corporate Social Responsibility and Stakeholder Capital
Corporate Social Responsibility and Emergent Models in Management of Stakeholder Capital in
Philippine Conglomerates
Serafin D. Talisayon
Fifth International Research Workshop on Asian Business Singapore Management University,
Singapore 13 April 2009
Abstract
The paper adopts a social benefit cost analysis framework to look at three stages in the historical
development of management of stakeholder capital of corporations in the Philippines. The first two
stages were government driven. Stage One is internalization and moderation of some social costs
starting with the Environmental Impact Statement System adopted by the Philippine government
under President Marcos in 1981. Stage Two consists of reforms in the political economy started in ...

In end 2007, intangible assets contributed to 79.4% of market value of corporations. In end 2008, the
contribution was down to 75.4%. Because of the global financial crisis, as of April 5, 2009, this figure
was down to 70.9%. The nearly 10% drop is largely due to loss of stakeholder capital, i.e. business
confidence and trust. Source: data from 215 industry sectors from Yahoo Finance:

European Imperialism in Late 19th Century Africa
European Imperialism in Late 19th Century Africa:
African Response and Effects
Rafael Delatorre
History 002B Professor Standish April 12, 2014
Between 1870 and 1914, European countries ceased about ninety percent of Africa. Native Africans
faced political, military, and imperialism pressure from various European countries. After the end of
the profitable slave trade in Africa, due to abolishing of slavery, Europeans explored for new
guaranteed markets, and heavily profitable investments. In addition, European countries were under
industrialization, the demand for raw materials heavily increased. Europeans as well faced power
struggles with one another and competition for political influence in Africa. European power struggle
ultimately lead to the Scramble for Africa. Europeans undertook the process of imperialism in Africa
in the late 19th century by exercising political, economic, and military power on their African
colonies. Some African leaders and societies welcomed Europeans in hopes to protect and develop
their native land. Some African leaders and societies responded to European occupation by gathering
resistance groups in attempt to fight off foreign imperialists. How did European Imperialism begin?
There are many factors that played an important role in the process of taking over Africa for various
European countries. Between 1870 1890 European powers such as Great Britain, France, Germany,

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders by...
The overall message and core argument this book offers is that the new version of the Diagnostic and
Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the DSM 5, will cause an enormous increase of people who
are not mentally ill being diagnosed with a mental disorder and receiving unnecessary treatment for it.
Allen Frances argues that assigning everyday problems to mental disorders causes massive
disadvantages for individuals and society. Diagnosing a healthy person as mentally ill will lead to
unnecessary, harmful medications, the constricting of horizons, misallocation of medical recourses,
and wasting the budgets of families and the state. He states as well that we do not take responsibility
for our own mental well being. We do not trust our ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was not because of an increase of the mental illnesses but because of mistakes in the diagnostic
criteria. This has caused normal young children being diagnosed with a mental disorder and being
treated with harmful medications. There were mixed feelings among the parents about the diagnosing
of their children and the medications their children received. Some of the parents had some suspicion
against the medications but some parents were glad to see their child receiving special attention and
education.
The audience of the book is literally everyone. Frances wants to warn psychiatrists and psychologists
but general practitioners as well to watch out for depending too much on the criteria in DSM 5 in
diagnosing patients with mental illnesses. He argues that DSM 5 causes hyperinflation of diagnosis
and therefore emphasizes them to be critical towards using DSM 5 and its criteria. Frances wants to
warn normal people as well. He wants to alert people who do not need treatment to avoid it, but at the
same time encourage individuals who do need treatment to seek it and to stick with it. He also would
like to alert normal people of the diagnostic hyperinflation and the severe consequences of it and the
important role of the pharmaceutical companies in the diagnostic hyperinflation.
Differences with other sources

Bracero Program Analysis
Being an immigrant in a country isn t as compelling as many might think it is. After being oppressed
by the cruel nature of greed hearted person consuming everything and everyone in its path. Many
Mexican and other Latin American countries family are forced to leave their home. Due to a poor
economy with lack of jobs or drugs and cartel, and thousands of people are fleeing their country in
which their born to come to, the United Sate for a better day. Nevertheless, it is easier said than done,
because entering United State is extremely long and tedious process which may take up to years and

As a student, I am interested in helping others and I know I am not alone. Hispanic population in the
United States surpasses 50 million in the United State and not everyone has it easy some are
undocumented and unable to work. Many have family in Latin America who ache to come to America
and work. In addition, not everyone wishes to come to America illegally but the legal process take a
long time and there are no other options for people living in poverty. Therefore, I know I am not alone
when it comes to helping people. Audience From humanitarians to Hispanic community member as
well as scholar would be interested in bringing a change to the society. In Fact, politician and
governors like Greg Abbott would be interested in this issue because it seeks to help the border
security and probably strengthen the trade with Mexico. Furthermore, UTA student and their friend
and family, alongside scholar, journalist, and writers will be interested in this issue because it affects a
large population of us.
I don t know who would be my opponent, but I wish to find a common ground with them where they
and I easily express our thoughts and understand some alternative or modification for the Bracero
program where we both can agree. As a result, we may be able to help this nation cut the budget of
border control and use that money for something else, likewise, it will

Immigration Reform is Needed in the US Essay
Immigration in the United States The immigration patterns of the United States have fluctuated over
the years, some years having little while others see a rising amount of immigrants, both legal and
illegal, looking for opportunities to improve their lives. The amount of illegal immigration is a
problem since many take advantage of the social services provided by the government without
contributing towards the country since they are not citizens and many people see these illegal
immigrants as a threat to their employment. Illegal immigrants do affect the U.S negatively in a
number of ways, but if those illegal immigrants were to have a safe passageway towards gaining
citizenship, the immigrants would contribute greatly towards the ... Show more content on

It would bring in 11 million new citizens who pay social security taxes and buy things ( Egan 1).
Though attitudes towards immigrants are negative, immigration was not always bad, in fact it was
once welcomed into America when it lacked a strong labor force. Most immigrants working in the U.S
during this time learned that life as a worker here was better than their previous life. Both skilled and
unskilled workers boosted the economy in strong times, but when the economy was on a fall, the
unskilled laborers were hit hardest of all (Andryszewski 52). Effects of immigration on the economy
also raise the argument over social service abuse, which is immigrants using social services provided
by the government without paying social service taxes or being in the right legal status to obtain those
services. Many have argued that illegal immigrants should not be entitled to health care services and
public education should be denied to illegal immigrant children. If this were to happen then family
migrants would be less common, and this is counter productive to the U.S, it is much better if the
immigrants arrive with their families to help them assimilate better within society and makes them
better citizens. Illegal immigrants children have the opportunity to gain a free education in

Ellis Island First Person Creative Essay
This is a creative essay on Ellis Island, describing life as an immigrant who went to Ellis Island
through first person. All facts and dates are historically correct.
I come from Spain. My name is Carmina Diaz.
I immigrated because of the Cristero War, in Spain. The war was actually a rebellion of the Roman
Catholics in Spain who were persecuted by the government. There were dangers such as raids and the
death toll was growing higher every day. Being a Catholic Christian family who simply wanted to live
in peace, we moved out to escape the war and the persecution that had caused it.
We travelled from our hometown in Spain, a place called Badajoz in a train to Lisboa, Spain. Lisboa
had a harbor and from there we boarded the ship ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I stayed healthy but I wondered if the more sick would make it into America.
Now focusing on some of the more tasteful parts of the voyage. I m normally quite shy. Living so
close to others breeds annoyance and irritation, especially towards those others, but I did make a few
friends. There was this bouncy girl, also from Spain, called Carlotta. She spoke Portuguese as well as
Spanish and introduced me to her good friend Sancho from Portugal. We all became friends and
discussed our homelands and topics like school and cultural differences. We were amazed at how
different our lives were. Yet we were friends on board.
Reaching Ellis Island
When the ship finally arrived at America. I was feeling excited yet apprehensive. I felt excited to see
this new world that had been all the talk on the ship. However, worry was practically eating my
insides; where would we go? What would we do? Would wild animals attack us? How would we earn
our living? Would there be savages waiting for us? Where were we landing? Would we be sent back?
What would the people be like? Would I still be able to go to school? Would we have to live off the
land? (If so, I could take Carlotta and Sancho with me)! I could not bear the thought of another few
weeks cooped up in that ship. Of course, I was nervous, and there were butterflies in my stomach, too!
In my imagination, America had been a wild and dangerous jungle. I was disappointed when I saw the
reality. New York had a perfectly

Albert Bandura Created The Social Cognitive Theory, Which
Albert Bandura created the Social Cognitive Theory, which is actions shown or displayed in front of a
child is how he/she will act. Bandura has spent most of his life studied the behavioral traits in young
children, mostly aggression in younger children. With Bandura s theory we will learn about why it is
so important to demonstrate it in the classroom, the key points of this theory and learn more about
Albert Bandura and how he came up with the theory.

Albert Bandura was in Canada and grew up with five other siblings. Bandura s dad worked for the
railroad laying down tracks and his mother worked at a grocery store until they became farmers when
they bought land. Bandura s parents were focused ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In this experiment it was trial and error since it was influence by consequences that punished or
correct bad behavior (2016). The main concept that we see how children are learning is through
watching adults and peers around them. Observational also has some subcomponents that are listed in
Educational Learning Theories ( pg 22 ) as attention, retention, production, and motivation. Attention
is where the child is actually watching the model and retention is how the child is choosing to
remember what happened with the model, if it was a good or bad interaction and how they will use it
later in life. Production is where children are pulling retention back from their memory and learning
how to use that interaction in real life. An example would be when a child watches an adult sneeze and
then another adult says bless you and then the person who sneezed says thank you, if the child hears a
peer sneeze they will say bless you since they have seen this interaction before and now know how to
interact in this situation. And then motivation is where the child puts into action what they have
learned which would be when they hear a peer sneeze and they say bless you. How the child chooses
to use these key concepts is all dependent on their own personal developmental process.
Impact of Social Cognitive Theory on the Classroom
With Bandura s outlines of his social cognitive theory there are multiple ways to use

Lottery Impact On Society
An analysis of how the lottery is operated and regulated can help identify the negative facets that
influence society. Determining what demographic most often participates in the lottery can aid in
finding the best way to minimize the social impact of gambling. Along with minimizing the negative
effects of the lottery, what people believe the chances of winning are can lead them to false faith in
investing money into the lottery. Where the money goes also influences people to play, despite the
lack of certainty. Looking back to history helps track progression and identifies patterns. The lottery
and its ongoing negative effects can still be fixed, leaving America with a safer and more beneficial
form of revenue and entertainment.

Industrial Development And Population Growth
Industrial development and population growth have created a surge in global demand for energy. The
tension in the Middle East and the sharp rise in oil prices since the 1990 s had Western countries like
the US scrambling to secure alternative energy sources. While solar and wind energy is flourishing,
energy industries have pursued more aggressive means of tapping the earth s resources. Continued
mining, drilling, and especially hydraulic fracturing have been a game changer for the US. Although
industrialized energy development is making great strides in harnessing the earth s energy resources, it
is also threatening the natural environment and the quality of life in many communities.
Fracking refers to hydraulic or hydro fracturing of rock formations to stimulate and extract natural gas
and oil. The process involves drilling down through sedimentary rocks for thousands of feet, then
sideways for miles, pumping millions of gallons of water, sand, and chemicals at high pressure to
open fractures in the rocks, allowing gas and oil to flow. This relatively new technology is also being
used for resource exploration by geothermal developers. Prior to fracking, it was too expensive to
exploit shale gas , but it is now being viewed as a way for the United States (US) to become
independent from foreign oil. Fracking also brings a host of new public health and environmental
concerns; drilling chemicals and fracking fluids are highly toxic and include known carcinogens.

Comparison Of Gestures In France And America
1. Greetings
When you meet a new person in France, the polite thing to do would be to shake their hand, say hello,
and introduce yourself to everyone in the room if you had just arrived. If you were greeting a close
friend of family member you would then kiss them once on each cheek (3 kisses in South France).
Friends address each other with their first names in an informal manner like many young people do.
Adults tend to be more conservative and formal and tend to be un expressive in front of people they
don t know well. Some inappropriate conversation topics would be anything having to do with: age,
income, occupation, family, asking how much something costs, asking where something was
purchased, talking loudly, chewing gum, and calling attention to oneself.
2. Gestures Body language such as hand gestures and facial expressions is very important while
talking to the French (especially in the South). Exaggerated expressions and movements help convey
the reality of a story or explanation. Gestures in France and America are quite similar. Shrugging your
shoulders means that you don t know or you don t care. Putting up both of your hands with your palms
up illustrates helplessness or anger. And making a circle with your thumb and forefinger stands for
saying that something is okay or even perfect.

All the lower levels of management seem to need permission from the next level on things that I have

Question 4: What is the frequency of the communication between the different management levels?
How does it take place? Officially? Unofficially?
From the very top, our CEO holds quarterly meetings with all employees to cover the status of the
company. The management team also holds a more numbers based meeting with all management team
to cover the status of the company. It is after this level that the communication falls apart. Very little
from the middle managers makes it down to the next levels of employees. This company is publicly
held so with some investigation the numbers are available, but as an employee we should not have to
do the digging to get the information.
Question 5: At what level does the communication flow to the lowest level of the organization?
It will come from three places with varying quality. First is the quarterly meeting with the CEO. This
is a very high level of company information that is shared. Second, there are random posting boards
that Human Resources will place various information on. Third, the direct Supervisors will conduct
employee meetings. This last one seems to be sporadic and not as consistent as it should be, and with
some Supervisors not conducted at all.

Dubois Hybridity Analysis
The root of Dubois internal struggle can be interpreted as the failure of society to accept the
interspersion of hybridity with regards to standard norms and conventions followed by collective
members of society. The juxtaposition of societal norms in Streetcar serves to illustrate the unyielding
reluctance that society holds when the question of hybridity is posited. In this paper, hybridity refers
not to the amalgamation of societal norms, but rather the acceptance and integration of individuals
who hold beliefs that are diametrically opposite to what is standard in collective societies. The Old
South, a geographic region of the United States, was a region where the economy was heavily reliant
upon agriculture. Consequently, this led to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Post war America observed dramatic reformations such as the onset of idealism (1920 s), hyper
patriotism (after World War I), and the subsequent modernization of the nation. The orthodox
Victorian age ideals held by the Southern Belle had flamboyantly disconnected themselves from
Americans as people took great pride in observing the ideals of America. Unfortunately for Dubois,
she embodies the many women who were alienated and dissociated by this transition. Williams work
offers an insight into the dissent that stems from the failure of society to bridge the gap between
individuals caught in the mesh of social transitions through the lens of a woman estranged by her own;
moreover, Williams relays the incumbency upon society to embrace hybridity in order to integrate
individuals ensnared by societal

The Chef Menteur Landfill
Introduction The recovery effort following Hurricane Katrina presented various challenges for many
communities throughout New Orleans trying to rebuild their lives. The Village of Versailles is one
such community, however, the Vietnamese American community that populates the village has a
history of being ignored and marginalized from decisions impacting their home, particularly with
regards to the opening of the Chef Menteur landfill. This paper takes a look at the historical context of
the Chef Menteur landfill to better understand the major stakeholders including the Vietnamese
American community, the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality and the Louisiana
Environmental Action Network. It also sets forth perform a stakeholder analysis to coordinate each
stakeholder to develop a monitoring and reporting plan for the Chef Menteur landfill. Using Colin
Eden and Fran Ackerman s stakeholder analysis to inform stakeholder coordination, and Archon Fung
s concept of minipublics, the Department of Sanitation will work with stakeholders to ensure that the
concerns of the community and the environment are addressed in the monitoring and reporting plan.
Background on Chef Menteur Landfill On February 9, 2006, then Mayor Ray Nagin signed an

Subject: What should US policy towards military assistance to Taiwan be?
Historical Background: Taiwan, otherwise known as the Republic of China (ROC), has a complicated
political status on the world stage. The People s Republic of China (PRC) lays territorial claims to
Taiwan and most countries recognize China as the mainland as Taiwan as an autonomous region
within it. However, Taiwan sees itself independent as the true government of China, but only a couple
dozen countries recognize it as sovereign government and by technical definition of what constitutes
as a sovereign state under the Montevideo Convention of 1933, Taiwan fits the criteria.1 Though

Both economic and security threats are culminated in a general consensus that weapons trade between
both countries includes only defensive weapons.5 In 1994, the policy towards Taiwan was reviewed,
however no changes were made to the arms sales policy.6 The military assistance the US provides
Taiwan with, despite being defensive in nature, is still a source of consternation to the PRC and is a
problem for its relations with both Taiwan and the US.
Significance:
Military assistance to Taiwan is essential for Taiwan s sense of security, but it is also a source of
friction with US relations with the PRC. Selling Taiwan an amount of weapons that the PRC considers
excessive may lead to increased tensions between both the US and the PRC. Under the TRA, the US
still has a degree of obligation in ensuring Taiwanese security. It deems that if US assistance is
necessary to maintain peace in the Western Pacific and if Taiwan is forced to make a decision
regarding its statehood under non peaceful means the US will intervene in Taiwan s affairs. Currently,
this is limited to selling defensive weapons, but not providing further military assistance or performing
joint drills like those performed in South Korea.
Positive trilateral relations are essential for US economic interests. By maintaining positive

Majorities tend to prevent any opportunity that a minority group might have to gain support for a
contradicting opinion. It is incredibly easy for members of society to abandon their beliefs in the midst
of an overpowering majority. This process leads to an unequal society in which the rights of the people
are restricted. In the essays, On Liberty and On Representative Government, written by John Stuart
Mill, there is a concern for the tyranny of the majority. He expresses his concern in, On Liberty, by
supporting an increase in individual liberties. It is expressed again in, On Representative Government,
by promoting a true democracy. Mill proposes remedies for combating this tyranny of the majority,
and further discusses the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To counter this notion of monarchy by majority, Mill offers remedy through individual liberties in, On
Liberty.
By increasing the individual liberties of men in a society, you increase their personal freedom of
forming individual opinions. The less restricted a person s thoughts, the more unique their opinions
become. `In proportion to the development of his individuality, each person becomes more valuable to
himself and is, therefore, capable of being more valuable to others (On Liberty 60). To constrain
someone s thoughts would result in that person becoming more likely to join the majority. Allowing
someone to think for themselves will help acknowledge the voices of all the classes of a society.
Having said that Individuality is the same thing with development and that it is only the cultivation of
individuality which produces, or can produce, well developed human beings... (On Liberty 61).
Despite their fallibilities, an individual is more likely to know what would make him happy than
someone else would. Therefore, if people develop independence of judgment and take responsibility
for their own happiness, utility will be maximized. I regard utility as the ultimate appeal on all ethical
questions; but it must be utility in the largest sense, grounded on the permanent interests of man as a
progressive being (On Liberty 10). Human progress, best

Shakespeare s Othello
In Poetics, Aristotle explains tragedy as an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a
certain magnitude [...] through pity and fear effecting the proper purgation of these emotions. Aristotle
notes that a perfect tragedy must include the downfall of the prominent protagonist as a result of his
own tragic flaw, a complex plot, and the use of catharsis. William Shakespeare s Othello, concerns the
downfall of a noble, but greatly flawed, black general in the Venetian army. Through the various
elements present in the play, and in accordance with the criteria discussed in Poetics, it is evident that
Othello is an excellent example of a tragedy. Some may argue that Iago manipulated Othello, and

Aristotle states that a tragic hero, first, and most important [...] must be good (Aristotle 6). He further
explains that, any speech or action that manifests moral purpose of any kind will be expressive of
character: the character will be good if the purpose is good (Aristotle 6). Othello s goodness is
displayed when he defends himself from the accusations made by Senator Brabantio about his recent
marriage to Desdemona, Brabantio s daughter. Brabantio argues that Othello, practiced on her with
foul charms, abused her delicate youth with drugs or minerals that weakens motion (I, ii, (line
number)). To which Othello responds, she loved me for the dangers I had passed, and I loved her that
she did pity them. This only is the witchcraft I have used (I, iii, (line number)). Othello justifies his
actions by stating that he told her about the stories of his adventures which won Desdemona s interest

Top Ten Issues Facing National Parks Research Paper
In society, everyone is attached and more focused on technology rather than the nature and wildlife of
planet earth. Some people might argue that the parks or green spaces produce too many greenhouse
gases which will pollute the cities. However, our cities already have a lot of pollution so if greenhouse
gases are added to the mix it won t be of any harm. People also argue that parks take up land space
that could be developed for retail and the use of natural resources. Parks actually help contribute to the
economy because it helps in the real estate market and ticketed events are held there which contributes
to the community s economy. Not only is the fresh air good for your body but walking around the park

Large amounts of the funds are needed to keep a lot of the national parks up and running. However,
the money is mostly being put towards the tourism side of the parks and not the upkeep. The parks
need to be properly maintained in order to preserve the natural beauty of the park itself. In the web
based article Top Ten Issues Facing National Parks by National Geographic it states that National
parks protect the historic buildings in which America s history was made...but some of these hallowed
edifices are crumbling...they re a big part of a $9.5 billion maintenance backlog that plagues the park
system. In other words, the parks have a lot of unresolved issues that need to be taken care of but
upkeep on the nature side needs to be taken care of as well. An example of this is that non native
species are being introduced to the parks. This is a difficult issue because no park has closed borders
so it is hard for the management to control every single animal that come and go from the park. The
national parks and recreation department is working on a variety of solutions for the issues

Preparing To Lead To Schema
Leadership is perceived and defined in many ways, but in the end, every concept of leadership is
brought back on the focus of people. Followers reaction towards a leader decides the effectiveness of
his or her specific style of governance. Because of the importance of the subordinate, leaders must
treat everyone they manage with dignity and respect. To achieve this feat, the leader must understand
the meaning of culture and other aspects which stem from it and social perceptions and biases which
lead to schema and ultimately unjust stereotypes. In the leadership textbook Preparing to Lead:
Introduction to Leadership and Development written by LCDR Litchford, USN and LT Bryant, USN,
it defines culture as the totality of learned socially transmitted ... Show more content on

We see the world through our own lens crafted and shaped by our culture. By these lens we conduct a
process called attribution which is the rationalization of a person s traits, motives, abilities and
situational pressures. These rationalizations are called schema. Schema are products of the human s
natural process of categorizing people as groups instead of individual entities. There are many types of
schema, but the most commonly known and used schema is the group schema or a stereotype. An
example of a stereotype is that all football players are dumb. Even though I once was a football player,
I found myself believing this stereotype during a lab. I had a question on the procedure of the lab and
as I was about to ask the classmate next to me, I realized he was a football player and I did not ask
him for a while because I thought he was even more confused than I was. Although this thought went
through my mind, I eventually forced myself to ask him, and he knew exactly what was going on in
lab. I was very angry at myself for putting this man in a stereotype and not taking the time to actually
know the football player. Stereotypes in America are usually used towards social, racial, religious, and
ethnic groups. Other types of schema are personal schema which are assumptions made from knowing
one attribute of a person, self schemas which are thinking yourself as fat, so you may diet too much or
become bulimic and become anorexic, and event schemas which are schemas created from what
people expect to happen during a simple event. Schema can be dangerous especially towards people
because when assumptions are made, the leader feels no need to actually get to know the individual.

How Is Iago A Tragic Hero
Honest Iago is maybe one of the most intriguing characters in the tragic play Othello, by William
Shakespeare. Using many skillfully planned out words and actions, Iago easily manipulates others to
do things that benefit him and lets him come closer and closer to achieving his goals. Iago is the main
cause of tragic events, leading Othello and others towards their tragic ends.
This man is far from your standard tragic villain. Iago s role in the play is rather special and unique,
and definitely not what the reader or may be expecting. Iago is a very intelligent character. He is a
very skilled judge of characters and their skillsets and will often use this to his own advantage. As an

The Ethics of Xenotransplantation Essay examples
The Ethics of Xenotransplantation
1. Introduction to Xenotransplantation
Xenotransplantation is the process of taking cells, parts of organs, or even whole organs from one
species of animal, and implanting them into another species. The FDA has given their own definition
of xenotransplantation which they say is any procedure that involves the transplantation, implantation,
or infusion into a human recipient of either live cells, tissues, or organs from a non human animal
source, or human body fluids, cells, tissues or organs that have had ex vivo contact with live non
human animal cells, tissues or organs. The main interest of the practice is to be able to take organs
from animals for the purpose of using them in humans in need ... Show more content on

Also, in 1999, UNOS reported that 6125 people died while on the waiting list to receive a transplat
organ.
3. Professional Issues
One of the professional issues associated with xenotransplantation is that doctors may be more likely
to take risks when it comes to the research and experimentation of xenotransplantation in hopes of
attaining fame and notoriety. All medical doctors are required to take the Hippocratic Oath before they
are given license to practice, which they may violate in their rush for fame in the pioneering of this
new medical process. Doctors have certain responsibilities for the safety and health of their patients.

4. Legal/Policy Issues
One legal issue could be that researchers must take care not to violate the laws against cruelty to and
abuse of animals. In addition, if people were to become infected with a disease because of
xenotransplantation, there could be legal ramifications for the doctors who performed the suspected
operation(s), as well as the companies in whose facilities the operation(s) was/(were) performed. To

Alcoholism As A Family Disease
It is estimated that the number of adults, in the United States, who abuse alcohol or are alcohol
dependent is approximates 17.6 million, or 8.46 percent of adults (Substance Abuse and Mental Health
Services Administration, 2015). These statistics present a primary health concern (Hart Kisr, 2013).
Still yet, an additional concern is warranted because of the family influences on the development of
problems with alcohol and the risk for family members developing alcoholism and other mental or
behavioral issues (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). Evidence points to
problems with alcohol that are associated with various family factors, such as spousal and parental
use, use by children, family principles and attitudes about alcohol consumption, dynamics of family
and patterns of relationship, and interplay of alcohol with biological and genetic factors (NIAAA,
2005). Alcoholism is considered a family disease all members are affected, thus, those who are
concerned the most about the alcoholic are affected the most (Al Anon Family Group, 2008). For this
reason, Al Anon offers peer support in an environment of hope, strength and offers experience in
managing an alcoholic loved one (Al Anon Family Group, 2008). This paper presents a brief history

REDUCING FALLS IN THE ELDERLY
Reducing Falls in the Elderly by Use of Multifactorial Assessments and Management Programs
Marney Belmore
Southeast Missouri State University
A fall is defined as an unanticipated occurrence where a person happens to lie on the ground, floor or a
surface that is below them from their prior standing, lying or sitting position. In the United States,
people over the age of 65 years of age is increasing at a rapid rate due to the increase in the average
life expectancy and our baby boomers advancing in years. In fact, the U.S. Census Bureau predicts
that the quantity of people aged 65 years or older will double by the year 2030 and the people 85 years
and older will grow by 5 times by the year 2050. With the increasing average age of Americans, the
escalation of falls in the elderly will increase tremendously because of many different risk factors that
affect our elderly population. (Michael et al., 2010).
Falls are triggered by multifaceted factors with numerous dangers that include either long or short
term influencing factors. The connections between these factors may be altered by the person?s age,
ailments, illnesses, diagnoses such as Parkinson?s, stroke, diabetes mellitus and arthritis, or their
surroundings. The major fall risk factors for elderly include their advancing age, loss of muscle

The Cause And Effects Of Air Pollution In The Beijing City
A Ghanaian and founder of Smart Youth Volunteers Foundation, Lailah Gifty Akita said Laziness has
made our cities unclean. If we begin to work and act appropriately, we will clean our cities of any dirt.
People s self centered personality had caused the pollution, and if people think more about the city and
implicate to help then people can get rid of the pollution. So, as the city that suffers from one of the
most serious pollutions, Beijing air quality is a getting worse every year because of the dearth of
citizen support. Also, Beijing population is increasing and as people increase so do the number of cars.
Unfortunately, the amount of trees shrinks, and the Beijing government cannot reduce the use of coal
that is unnecessary. Consequently, Beijing suffers from air pollution as a result of high population
density, commercial use of coal, and lack of citizen involvement. To begin with, the amount of
inhabitants in Beijing causes pollution. As the capital of China, most every Chinese person dreams of
living in Beijing, for this reason Beijing is full of people, and as they move in the air becomes worse.
Beijing population is increasing every day and as people increase car use also increases. With nearly
20 million of people living in Beijing, this amounts to 5 million cars driving around every day. Even
though the government tries to limit cars that drive in one day by the plate number of each car, but still
these cars create abundant carbon dioxide. To make matters

My Love In My Life
Dear family, mother, father, dearest grandmother, and beloved cousins, if my misfortune is your
happiness, then I ll gladly suffer. If my wails at night are music to your ears, then I ll write you a

Almost every Asian child is taught the most fundamental principle of our culture, to keep your family

Theme Of Profit In Great Expectations
When one gains immense profit at the loss of their soul, all is lost in the end. This is the point that
Dickens is trying to make with the main character in his novel Great Expectations. Profit does not
mean loss in the literal sense, but when you gain something materialistic at the loss of something
sentimental, profit means loss. In the novel, Pip, the main character, leaves his home and moves to
England and makes immense profit in money, only to lose it all. In Great Expectations, the giving of
the soul at the gain of the world is explored through Pip and Miss Havisham. Pip moves to England
and becomes wealthy; Pip now thinks that money is the best thing in the world. Pip then returns to his
home and confesses his love to Estella, Estella doesn t love him back. Pip now realizes that money
cannot buy happiness. Miss. Havisham, on the other hand, is the aftermath of gaining materialistic
things at the loss of her soul. When we first meet her, she is dressed as if she was going to a wedding,
but most of her clothes are scattered about. She already knows that money did not fulfill her dreams
and now there is nothing to be done about it. In Great Expectations we explore Pip s ups and downs as
he moves throughout the world trying to understand the hardships that come with it. Pip starts as a
cheerful but fearful young boy growing up in nineteenth century England. Pip claims that his sister

Over all , the trend that we noticed was that most patients preferred cold therapy over heat therapy, but
in most cases, when both aspects were utilized, they yielded a better result.
Research
Because pain is the main issue that we are looking at absolving, we wanted to look at how patients
reacted to pain. Yvonne C. Lee et al. looked at pain sensitivity and pain reactivity in osteoarthritis. The
purpose of the study was to assess the experimental pain sensitivity and compare the inflammatory
response to pain in 26 OA patients and 33 age and sex matched controls from the general population.
The methods consisted of participants undergoing psychophysical pain testing to assess pain
sensitivity in response to heat, cold and mechanical stimuli. Blood samples were taken at baseline and

The overall message and core argument this book offers is that the new version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the DSM 5, will cause an enormous increase of people who are not mentally ill being diagnosed with a mental disorder and receiving unnecessary treatment for it. Allen Frances argues that assigning everyday problems to mental disorders causes massive disadvantages for individuals and society. Diagnosing a healthy person as mentally ill will lead to unnecessary, harmful medications, the constricting of horizons, misallocation of medical recourses, and wasting the budgets of families and the state. This was not because of an increase of the mental illnesses but because of mistakes in the diagnostic criteria. This has caused normal young children being diagnosed with a mental disorder and being treated with harmful medications. There were mixed feelings among the parents about the diagnosing of their children and the medications their children received. Some of the parents had some suspicion against the medications but some parents were glad to see their child receiving special attention and education. The audience of the book is literally everyone. Frances wants to warn psychiatrists and psychologists but general practitioners as well to watch out for depending too much on the criteria in DSM 5 in diagnosing patients with mental illnesses. He argues that DSM 5 causes hyperinflation of diagnosis and therefore emphasizes them to be critical towards using DSM 5 and its criteria. Frances wants to warn normal people as well. He wants to alert people who do not need treatment to avoid it, but at the same time encourage individuals who do need treatment to seek it and to stick with it. He also would like to alert normal people of the diagnostic hyperinflation and the severe consequences of it and the important role of the pharmaceutical companies in the diagnostic hyperinflation. Immigration Reform is Needed in the US Essay Immigration in the United States The immigration patterns of the United States have fluctuated over the years, some years having little while others see a rising amount of immigrants, both legal and illegal, looking for opportunities to improve their lives. The amount of illegal immigration is a problem since many take advantage of the social services provided by the government without contributing towards the country since they are not citizens and many people see these illegal immigrants as a threat to their employment. Though attitudes towards immigrants are negative, immigration was not always bad, in fact it was once welcomed into America when it lacked a strong labor force. Most immigrants working in the U.S during this time learned that life as a worker here was better than their previous life. Both skilled and unskilled workers boosted the economy in strong times, but when the economy was on a fall, the unskilled laborers were hit hardest of all (Andryszewski 52). Effects of immigration on the economy also raise the argument over social service abuse, which is immigrants using social services provided by the government without paying social service taxes or being in the right legal status to obtain those services. Many have argued that illegal immigrants should not be entitled to health care services and public education should be denied to illegal immigrant children. The war was actually a rebellion of the Roman Catholics in Spain who were persecuted by the government. There were dangers such as raids and the death toll was growing higher every day. Attention is where the child is actually watching the model and retention is how the child is choosing to remember what happened with the model, if it was a good or bad interaction and how they will use it later in life. Production is where children are pulling retention back from their memory and learning how to use that interaction in real life. An example would be when a child watches an adult sneeze and then another adult says bless you and then the person who sneezed says thank you, if the child hears a peer sneeze they will say bless you since they have seen this interaction before and now know how to interact in this situation. And then motivation is where the child puts into action what they have learned which would be when they hear a peer sneeze and they say bless you. How the child chooses to use these key concepts is all dependent on their own personal developmental process. • 13. Industrial Development And Population Growth Industrial development and population growth have created a surge in global demand for energy. The tension in the Middle East and the sharp rise in oil prices since the 1990 s had Western countries like the US scrambling to secure alternative energy sources. While solar and wind energy is flourishing, energy industries have pursued more aggressive means of tapping the earth s resources. Continued mining, drilling, and especially hydraulic fracturing have been a game changer for the US. Although industrialized energy development is making great strides in harnessing the earth s energy resources, it is also threatening the natural environment and the quality of life in many communities. Fracking refers to hydraulic or hydro fracturing of rock formations to stimulate and extract natural gas and oil. The process involves drilling down through sedimentary rocks for thousands of feet, then sideways for miles, pumping millions of gallons of water, sand, and chemicals at high pressure to open fractures in the rocks, allowing gas and oil to flow. This relatively new technology is also being used for resource exploration by geothermal developers. Prior to fracking, it was too expensive to exploit shale gas , but it is now being viewed as a way for the United States (US) to become independent from foreign oil. Fracking also brings a host of new public health and environmental concerns; drilling chemicals and fracking fluids are highly toxic and include known carcinogens. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Greetings When you meet a new person in France, the polite thing to do would be to shake their hand, say hello, and introduce yourself to everyone in the room if you had just arrived. If you were greeting a close friend of family member you would then kiss them once on each cheek (3 kisses in South France). Friends address each other with their first names in an informal manner like many young people do. Adults tend to be more conservative and formal and tend to be un expressive in front of people they don t know well. Some inappropriate conversation topics would be anything having to do with: age, income, occupation, family, asking how much something costs, asking where something was purchased, talking loudly, chewing gum, and calling attention to oneself. 2. Gestures Body language such as hand gestures and facial expressions is very important while talking to the French (especially in the South). Exaggerated expressions and movements help convey the reality of a story or explanation. Gestures in France and America are quite similar. By these lens we conduct a process called attribution which is the rationalization of a person s traits, motives, abilities and situational pressures. These rationalizations are called schema. Schema are products of the human s natural process of categorizing people as groups instead of individual entities. There are many types of schema, but the most commonly known and used schema is the group schema or a stereotype. An example of a stereotype is that all football players are dumb. Even though I once was a football player, I found myself believing this stereotype during a lab. I had a question on the procedure of the lab and as I was about to ask the classmate next to me, I realized he was a football player and I did not ask him for a while because I thought he was even more confused than I was. Although this thought went through my mind, I eventually forced myself to ask him, and he knew exactly what was going on in lab. I was very angry at myself for putting this man in a stereotype and not taking the time to actually know the football player. Stereotypes in America are usually used towards social, racial, religious, and ethnic groups. Other types of schema are personal schema which are assumptions made from knowing one attribute of a person, self schemas which are thinking yourself as fat, so you may diet too much or become bulimic and become anorexic, and event schemas which are schemas created from what people expect to happen during a simple event. Alcoholism As A Family Disease It is estimated that the number of adults, in the United States, who abuse alcohol or are alcohol dependent is approximates 17.6 million, or 8.46 percent of adults (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2015). These statistics present a primary health concern (Hart Kisr, 2013). Still yet, an additional concern is warranted because of the family influences on the development of problems with alcohol and the risk for family members developing alcoholism and other mental or behavioral issues (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, 2005). Evidence points to problems with alcohol that are associated with various family factors, such as spousal and parental use, use by children, family principles and attitudes about alcohol consumption, dynamics of family and patterns of relationship, and interplay of alcohol with biological and genetic factors (NIAAA, 2005). Alcoholism is considered a family disease all members are affected, thus, those who are concerned the most about the alcoholic are affected the most (Al Anon Family Group, 2008). For this reason, Al Anon offers peer support in an environment of hope, strength and offers experience in managing an alcoholic loved one (Al Anon Family Group, 2008). If we begin to work and act appropriately, we will clean our cities of any dirt. People s self centered personality had caused the pollution, and if people think more about the city and implicate to help then people can get rid of the pollution. So, as the city that suffers from one of the most serious pollutions, Beijing air quality is a getting worse every year because of the dearth of citizen support. Also, Beijing population is increasing and as people increase so do the number of cars. Unfortunately, the amount of trees shrinks, and the Beijing government cannot reduce the use of coal that is unnecessary. Consequently, Beijing suffers from air pollution as a result of high population density, commercial use of coal, and lack of citizen involvement. To begin with, the amount of inhabitants in Beijing causes pollution. As the capital of China, most every Chinese person dreams of living in Beijing, for this reason Beijing is full of people, and as they move in the air becomes worse.
