Goodfellas Movie Essay
Goodfellas is one of the most significant crime movies. As such, this picture addresses the motives
and rationale behind wrongful activities perpetrated by gangsters in a convincing manner. It also
examines practical implications of their moral choices. The movie traces the life of an aspiring
gangster, Henry. At the beginning, he is an ambitious adolescent willing to work for the local mafia.
He succeeds, gradually rises through the ranks, and wins respect from the boss, Paul Cicero. This
protagonist also makes friends with his colleagues James (Henry s personal role model) and Tommy
(who is amiable yet almost sociopathic when offended). Henry absorbs the following two principles as
the main precondition for success in this environment: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First, Henry and his friends uphold their ethos of merciless retribution for any real or perceived threat.
As a consequence, they are continuously resorting to violence, even when it is not necessary. Second,
the internal logic of their lives, i.e., striving for wealth and success as well as going over the top on a
regular basis, enhances the risks of their activities and causes constant paranoia. Third, their
ostentatious machismo presents some problems regarding Henry s health (alcohol and drugs) and
personal life (infidelity). And the last, but not least, police officers always keep an eye on

A Research Study On Vitiligo Pathogenesis
4. Discussion
Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder of skin and hair. It is a cosmetically disfiguring disease
caused due to melanocytes destruction [Moretti et al., 2002], however, the pathogenesis of such
disease is still conflicting. Many previous studies tried to explain the pathogenesis according to many
points of view, they showed that it could either be an autoimmune mechanism, a neural dysfunction,
metabolic mechanism, or genetic causes [Moretti et al., 2002, Zhang et al,2005, Yazici et al., 2006].
In this study, we decided to assess the genetic factor in vitiligo pathogenesis. Our study detected a non
significant association between IFN γ +874A/T or +2109A/G gene polymorphism and vitiligo
susceptibility. In line with our finding Dwivedi, et al,2013 couldn t consider IFN γ +874 T/A
polymorphism as a genetic risk factor for generalized vitiligo. Also, an Iranian study, couldn t confirm
a relation between IFN γ +874 T/A gene polymorphism and vitiligo risk [Namian et al., 2009].
When we studied the different haplotype frequencies of INF γ (+874A/T) and INF γ (+2109A/G)
polymorphisms in vitiligo patients and control distributions, we observed a significant elevation of the
haplotype TA in vitiligo patients when compared with control group (P 0.03), this indicated increased
risk of vitiligo with this haplotype. To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies were done to
assess IFN γ +2109A/G gene polymorphism in relation to vitiligo and no

Golden Retriever Research Paper
Golden Retriever History: Where and When Did They Originate?
A Golden Retriever is one of the most popular and recognizable breeds of today. Its origins, however,
were a subject of debate for a very long time. Many argued that they came from a whole pack of
Russian tracker sheepdogs bought from a circus. But it wasn t until the earliest records of its history
came out in 1952 that a Golden Retriever had an origin to look back into. Time to set the record
straight.
The Golden Retriever is an early 19th century breed that was developed after a long line of breeding
from the Irish setter, Tweed water spaniel and Newfoundland dogs, with a goal to develop a hunting
dog that has the size, endurance and ability to retrieve a large number of game

Non Participant Households
Table 4.1 presents the characteristics of the milk market participant and non participant households.
There are statistically significant differences between the two groups on 17 covariates. Husbands in
participant households are on average older (mean 50) than husbands in non participant households
(mean 47). In terms of remoteness, participant households are located closer to the main road and milk
collection centers (MCC) (2.84 and 2.79km respectively) compared to non participant household (5.61
and 5.6km). Participant households have significantly larger household size (7.9) compared to non
participant households (6.6). The number of female members is also significantly larger in participant
(4.2) compared to non participant households (3.1).
Participant households have significantly larger land size (4.9 hectare) compared to non participant
households (3.8 hectare). Participant households have significantly more cows (mean 4.8) compared
to non participant households (mean 4). Participant households also have more crossbreed cows (mean
2.4) than non participant households (mean 0.9), while non participant households have more

Illiteracy And Poverty In America
I. Introduction: There is a strong correlation between student illiteracy and poverty. 25% of children in
America never learn how to read. Children who grow up in poverty stricken areas have extremely
limited exposure to reading materials. In addition, children living in poverty experience challenges in
obtaining nutritional food and tend to live in an unsafe environment, which can affect educational
advancement. According to the Heart of America foundation, 61 percent of families living in poverty
do not have children s books in their homes. Consequently, children living in poverty already have a
50 percent weaker vocabulary than their wealthier peers at the start of school (Hart). Along with the
lack of reading materials, lacking proper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Taking children on field trips to their nearby library to teach them about the system is very important.
They can later get their personal library card and return to rent out a book they wish to read. This is a
way to promote out of school reading.
III. Conclusion: Maximizing student illiteracy in Miami Dade County comes down to three critical
factors. First, providing students with more books at school. Secondly, giving students the knowledge
and opportunity to read at home. And lastly, giving the teachers the proper background on the students
they will be teaching so that the academics are approached accordingly. By meticulously approaching
each of these areas, Miami Dade County will be able to significantly increase student literacy in
poverty stricken schools. Ernestine Walls Benedict said, Reading empowers children by providing a
virtual passport to explore the world. They can learn about places, people and things very different
from their own experiences, as well as see themselves reflected in other children s lives. Being able to
read is not only important but it is critical for a person to succeed

The Scientific Theory Of Science
Science is based on fact through the processes of falsification. It is a utility function in society and is
widely consistent with the evidence of history and practice of rational thinking. Progress in science
since the fourteenth century has been revolutionary and valuable in the methods used for rationality
and reasoning. Scientific methods that are used to establish rationality is due to the simple, general
and rigorous explanations of the phenomena, (Diamond, 1998). This essay will explore the reasons to
the extent of the role of science in reason, displaying perspectives from respected philosophers,
politicians and scientists throughout time. Politician rather than scientist, Francis Bacon (1561 1627)
was the man who made a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His methods were also able to revolutionise reasoning as he was against the use of knowledge that had
been inherited from the past. Following Bacon s methods, scientists and philosophers have adopted his
methods and utilised the knowledge to better the results in order to establish the truth. Bacon s work
should be seen as a part of a widespread cultural revolution accelerated by the rise of the printing
press in the 15 th century (source). Bacon believed that scientific knowledge increases and grows.
Bacon s methods of testing hypotheses was highly valuable in the movement of science as a rational
enterprise. Furthermore, scientist Rene Descartes (1596 1650) changed the world from within the
realm of practicality to reasoning through the applications of thinking rather than acting upon or
doing, I think therefore, I am. This gave reasoning in society a far more prominent role. Descartes is
believed to have been the first philosopher to use reason in the development of the natural sciences.
He used maths and physics as his basis for reasoning in the sciences. Primarily, Descartes had three
visions in which he was certain a divine spirit had led him to reveal a new philosophy. Descartes
believed that all truths were linking together and in order to find the fundamental truth, continuing
with logic and reasoning would broaden the use of the sciences

Taking a Look at Ancient Egypt
Africa is located to the south of the Western Europe and it is a very large landmass. It is bordered in
the north by the Mediterranean Sea and on the east by the Red sea and the Indian Ocean and in the
west by the Atlantic Ocean. Africa is known to have many diverse environments, which include arid
areas, semi arid, Tropical rainforests, Savanna, vast swamps and snowcapped mountains in the south
of Africa. The first ever civilization in Africa was in Egypt along the river Nile. This civilization later
spread to the other parts of Africa. The emergence of civilization in Africa provided a framework for
most of developments in African history. There were different setups cultural and political aspects
when civilization was emerging.
The Egyptian civilization was the earliest and it was one of the catalysts in the development of
civilization in other parts of Africa. The civilization began around 3000 BC. Its civilization is known
to be one of the longest serving civilizations in the world s history. Egypt is located in the Nile valley
of northeast Africa. The life of Ancient Egypt was centered on the river Nile and the fertile land
around it for the purpose of agriculture and commercial purposes. The river Nile provided them with
the irrigation they needed and control the flow of the water so that the crops could grow in any
weather condition of that area.
The irrigation provided the Ancient Egypt with adequate food. The surplus crops were used for
civilization and it was

Internal And External Factors Of A Company
Internal and external factors Dyne and Pierce (2008) explained that there are many factors which are
inducing a change process in a company, as employees at all levels of organisational hierarchy are the
agents of change though they are also barriers to it. Change happens when the forces of external
environment are forcing to change existing circumstances. So companies wanting to change when
there is fall in market share, new product has been launched, which is caught in the environmental
scan. Managers therefore will try to stay of competition, may lead to analysing own strengths,
weakness, opportunities and threats. This leads to understanding what capabilities and competencies
are existing to make a counter offer in the marketplace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These elements like communication pattern, delegation of tasks, leadership style are barriers when
they do not aid to mutual information exchange, and decision making to aid change process. Summers
(2011) opined that at individual employee level, there can barriers like no awareness and knowledge
about new QMS, or even they may not have motivation to unlearn the old and learn the new.
Acceptance and adoption of a new work method may find no employees as it conflicts with their
existing work standards. This is closely linked to their individual cultural beliefs, organisational work
culture which also affect individual abilities, which when falls short, needs new skill sets to be learnt.
Many employees are unable to cope with the steep learning curve, as each of them have individual
differences in learning new skills, show different levels of abilities in applying new work methods
(Dean and Bowen, 2008). Kerzner (2009) acknowledged that to bring in change to any technology,
financial support to change production systems is needed and hence the most liquid form of resource
to buy other resources is also important in organisations. Apart from that there are organisational
elements, like barriers of industry concentration, vertical integration which depends on competition,
size of firm,

David Hume s Theory of Ethics Essay
David Hume is considered to be one of the big three British empiricists, along with Hobbes and
Locke, and lived near the end of the Enlightenment. The Catholic Church was losing its control over
science, politics and philosophy and the Aristotelian world view was being swallowed up by a more
mechanistic viewpoint. Galileo found the theory provided by Copernicus to be correct, that our earth
was not the center of everything, but the celestial bodies including the earth circled the sun.
Mathematicians abounded. Pascal developed the first mechanical calculator and Newtonian physics
was breaking new ground. Not even the arts were immune. Within the same era Mary Shelley
authored Frankenstein: or the Modern Prometheus. The main theme for this ... Show more content on

The latter being the kind that he uses as a naturalist.
David Hume s most famous quote is Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can
never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them. To understand the implications of this
quote as a basis for an ethical theory you need to understand that every other ethical theory attempts to
derive how things ought to be from how things are. The jumps from matters of fact and relations of
ideas perceived by reason, to value judgments perceived by emotions, are made in Hume s opinion
with no logical reason. There is nothing contradictory in the statement the sun will not rise in the
morning, it is not unreasonable. We only feel that it ought to continue rising in the morning. The
scientific method uses inductive reasoning to construct a hypothesis and Hume does not contend that it
should not be used. It has been useful thus far in making predictions and it is the only tool that we
have for understanding the world around us.
David Hume s ethical theory sits between philosophy and modern day psychology. He uses the
empirical method to study the natural tendencies of human beings to engage their emotions, and in our
emotions is where morality could be understood best. One must remember

Effects of Insulin on IGF-1 Receptors
Pref 1 has been linked to IGF 1 and ERK MAPK pathways where prevention of ERK phosphorylation
by the MAPK/ERK kinase (MEK) inhibitor PD98059 enhances adipocytes differentiation (Wang,
2010). Insulin also binds to IGF 1 receptors with low affinity (Smith, 1988) and stimulates the
formation of an active Ras GTP complex and ERK MAPK pathway (Porras, 1996) and the PI3K
pathway. Both these pathways appear to be required for adipogenesis (Sale, 1995; Sakaue, 1998; Tang,
2005). The Ras GTP complex activates RAF kinase which is phosphorylated to induce MAPK. The
phosphorylated MAPK interacts with Elk1. Phohosphorylation of Ekl1 facilitates binding to the
mediator complex via the Med23 subunit (Stevens, 2002; Wang, 2005). The mediator complex is a
multi protein complex which bridges gene specific transcription factors and transcriptional machinery.
The Mediator Med23 (Sur2) subunit was originally identified as a genetic suppressor of a hyperactive
Ras phenotype in C.elegans (Singh, 1995). Elk1 is a member of the ternary complex factor family and
an important regulator of adipogenesis. The Elk1/Med23 interaction controls the expression of Krox20
in a MAPK dependent manner by promoting a productive preinitiation complex which leads to
transcription (Wang, 2009). Krox20 is expressed in adipose tissue (Soukas, 2001) and is the first
transcriptional factor expressed during adipogenesis after insulin stimulation (Chen, 2005; Gonzalez,
2005). Krox20 expression has been reported to regulate

Ambition And Detection In Seth Gordon s Film King Of Kong
Seth Gordon s documentary King of Kong produced in 2007 is a very competitive and tensing video.
It expresses the gamers as very focused individuals and explains the hunger of winning for them. The
director Seth Gordon shows a contrast between ambition and obsession through codes and convection
as well as characteristics. The codes and conventions in the documentary also play a vital role in
portraying different aspects of personalities in different characters. They change your perspective
about certain people or events and make you more aware of what is going on. Billy Mitchell, one of
the players in the documentary, was shown extremely logical and very professional. In disparity with,
Steve Wiebe, another gamer, who was portrayed as a very hardworking and ambitious man. Having
said that, there were other characters in the documentary which helped shape these two players
identity and portrayal. Seth Gordon succeeds in persuading us to think a particular type of way

Virgil Analysis of Dante Inferno Essay example

Virgil came to be regarded as one of Rome s greatest poets. His Aeneid can be considered a national
epic of Rome and has been extremely popular from its publication to the present day.
Virgil Beatrice sends Virgil to Earth to retrieve Dante and act as his guide through Hell and Purgatory.
Since the poet Virgil lived before Christianity, he dwells in Limbo (Ante Inferno) with other righteous
non Christians. As author, Dante chooses the character Virgil to act as his guide because he admired
Virgil s work above all other poets and because Virgil had written of a similar journey through the
underworld. Thus, Virgil s character knows the way through Hell and can act as Dante s

Dante is like the son Virgil never had. This comes to light most apparently in their flight from the two
timing demons. In lifting Dante to his chest and carrying him as he sprints toward safety, Virgil
becomes a mother figure to the terrified Dante. Hmmm, father and mother? You re right in guessing
that something bigger is going on here. As an unofficial poet laureate of the Romans, Virgil is a kind
of patron spirit of Italy. Moreover, as the consummate speaker and writer of Latin the ancestor
language of Italian Virgil is, in a sense, the fore father of Dante s native language. The two poets
kinship traces back to their respective languages.
Virgil and Language
As much as Dante wants the title of world s greatest poet, Virgil, it seems, has that honor. If you haven

steeped. First and foremost, there s that big important passage about Virgil s persuasive word. We

literally as decorated word. Doesn t that fit Virgil to a T? We re talking about the writer of the Aeneid
here, the Latin epic to end all epics, and Dante s all time favorite book.
We figure that Virgil spent so much time writing the Aeneid invoking the Muses, speaking in

Importance Of Corporal Punishment In Schools
Corporal punishment should be in schools because it makes sure kids have good behavior, it also
teaches kids to be respectful, and makes sure kids are safe. Every school should have corporal
punishment in schools because it teaches kids to have good behavior. In 2014, 94% of parents with
kids from three to four years old reported they had smacked their kid. This shows if a kid is acting up
or not being good give him a quick smack and it should change their perspective on the situation.
Corporal punishment should be in schools because if a kid is being bad in class they will most likely
not do it again. They would not be afraid of their teacher either because they are most likely not the
one spanking them if they re bad. In many schools bad behavior could get people detention, Anastasia
explained In 19 states, that behavior could get you spanked . This is a better punishment because
detention does nothing but just make people stay at school for longer, but if they get a spanking they
might not want to get in trouble again. Most people think that kids need to be safe and nurtured but if
they aren t getting in trouble than they will have all those things. It also helps the school have a good
learning environment with no distractions during class. Finney says, Detentions are not big enough for
some students . This shows how things can be sorted out better with a couple smacks and to make sure
they have better behavior.
Every school should have corporal punishment in schools because it teaches kids to be respectful. In
the 2005 2006 school year many students were acting up in class or doing bad things, and it shows
that year having the most reported swats ever. This shows many kids weren t being respectful to their
peers and got in trouble for that, but if they would have gotten detention they wouldn t have cared.
When another student gets a detention for being late or something multiple times they ll have a good
laugh about it and carry on with life. They don t care as much but a quick smack and they won t be
laughing about that and they would most likely learn their lesson. Jacobs explained The principal

Canadians (Daniel Muzyka). There is plenty of evidence to validate that many Canadians are incorrect
in believing that they have the best healthcare system in the world . Spending on healthcare in Canada

Gender Stereotypes In Rod Serling s The Twilight Zone
Most qualities revered in people are subjective, and leadership is one of these traits. However, does
not have to be a symptom of anything negative and in fact, allows for an every human being to revere
a unique person if they so wanted. A few specific people have garnered much attention in the recent
centuries for their works and endeavor, among them a man who is commonly said to be one of the
forefathers of science fiction television. Rod Serling, the creator of the Twilight Zone, was a visionary
man who turned hardships into stories that would influence those before and after death. While not the
typical leader, due to him not being a political figure or leader of a country his impact on culture,
specifically pop culture, cannot be brushed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His liberal viewpoints were forged from hardships of the second World War, which would cause him
to suffer great mental distress for the rest of his life, but yet found an outlet through writing to share
said opinions. Not all were entirely pleased with how blunt some morals were however, and he turned
to the commonly overlooked genre of science fiction. Censorship continued to haunt him though, with
many works were turned into a feather duster of what they should have been originally, much too his
own dismay. Nevertheless, Serling stood by his works, having used them to inspire others during his
time to hopefully spread more broadminded beliefs. Far outshooting his original hopes, Rod Serling
has become a visionary cultural icon of the 20th century whose well written works continue to affect
the world in ways that could have never been

What Is Joseph s True Identity
Joseph could no longer hold back his true identity, so he told everyone to leave the room except for his
brothers. When they were finally alone he told them that he was their brother Joesph. They were
shocked to find out that their brother was standing before them. Joseph encouraged them not to be
upset that they sold him into slavery because it was God plan to place him in a high position to keep
his family alive. Joseph explains there is still five years of famine to go. Joseph told his brothers to go
back to their fathers, and says, Joseph is alive, and govern of the land of Egypt. He instructs them to
pack all their belongings, and move to Goshen so he could provide for them. He tells them to describe

1998 Talk about epic! Jordan s career ended, the term Google was used in everyday conversation,
Kosmo Kramer was a household name. the technological advances and legendary events of 1998 are
featured by the 1998 Bulls, Google, IMac, Seinfeld and MP3s. The 1998 Chicago Bulls have made
records that still have not been broken. They won the NBA Finals, this made them get their second 3
peat (1997 98 Chicago Bulls Season). This means they won three NBA Finals in a row. This was their
sixth with in eight years. Phil Jackson coached some of the best basketball players, such as Scottie
Pippen, Dennis Rodman and even Michael Jordan! Each of those three players and the coach are in
the Hall of Fame today, including the assistant coach Tex Winter during the 97 98 season (1997 98
Chicago Bulls Season). Today we are still affected by this team as one of the best. Also Michael
Jordan is still the best player in the league, with unbreakable records. We can learn from them what it
takes to be a good team. While the Bulls set records still unreachable to this day, Google broke records
soon after its introduction. The thing many of us use today, as a matter of fact 5,922,000,000 people

Small Talk Essay
Small Talk
We ve all engaged in some sort of small talk either in the office, on campus, at a party, or other places
where you find yourself in the company of others. For some of us, participating in small talk may
come easily, while for others it may be quite difficult. Some individuals may find small talk to be
irritating while others find it a necessity. In this paper I am going to explore what exactly defines small
talk as such; the reasons why people find the need to engage in small talk; the benefits, and
disadvantages of small talk; is there an ethical approach to small talk; and provide tips on how to
participate in small talk without it creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.
What exactly defines small talk as such, segregating ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Wendy Warman, co author of Loud and Clear: How to Prepare and Deliver Effective Business and
Technical Presentations, gives instructional seminars on how to effectively participate in small talk for
big success. Warman discusses the importance of small talk in order to improve communication, boost
sales, enhance customer service and increase profits in any organization or industry. These are all very
important benefits, which I think everyone could find use for.
Now that we more thoroughly understand the basic means of small talk and what small talk actually
consists of, we need to be aware of the topics chosen for these conversations. There is an ethical
approach to small talk and ethical judgments need to be made. Very frequently small talk is shared
between individuals whom do not know each other well, therefore there are many forbidden topics
that should be avoided. When people do not know each other well it is not a wise decision to discuss
personal information such as salaries or divorce.
Two main topics that should be avoided are religion and politics. The foundationalist s view should
not be considered here since everyone s justified beliefs on these topics might vary. The intent of small
talk should basically be to get to know someone better, keeping in mind other peoples feelings. Raised
emotion may arise if one of these topics is brought

The Ever-Changing Penny
Pennies
The penny, has history, and it can help with charities, people are trying to get rid of the history and
more that the penny has made through the 200+ years. Even though the penny costs more than its own
value it can change the world. It has made many different communications though the world.
Although the penny cost more to make then its price, the penny should stay, to help with charity,A
middle school raised over $3000 in a week from a penny drive. The Penny also shows world history
because of how long they ve been around.
Washington Middle School (WMS) Raised over 3000 dollars in a week just from a penny drive. Many
people, schools, etc. do penny drives for charity, even though the penny cost 1 cent doesn t mean it s
useless. As Michael Cooper, an eighth grader said, If you asked for my quarters, I would have said no

The penny has a lot of history, through the 200 years the penny changed design and value. Based on
the article The Ever Changing Penny. The first pennies were minted in 1857, they were very large,
larger than a modern day quarter and had different images of the statue of liberty on the front(4). With
this example, one can see, there were several visions for the penny before the final product of the
Abraham Lincoln penny in 1909. The history of the penny reveals more than just a coin, it exposes a
piece of american culture. The penny has influenced our language, giving us a number of idioms, such
as A penny for your thoughts And Not one red cent (4). Despite its cultural influences the penny is
under attack currently, the reason? Because making the penny also costs money, more than its worth,in
2011, it costs the U.S. more than 2.4 cents to produce the penny. The History of the One Cent piece is
a curious one. How long it will remain a part of your spending currency is yet

Boeing
History
(Encyclopedia Britannica) Boeing can trace its origins all the way back to 1916. American timber
merchant William E. Boeing founded the Aero Products Company after he and U.S. Navy officer

1917 the company was renamed Boeing Airplane Company. Also in 1917 Boeing would go on to

This allowed a pilot who trained in one aircraft to virtually be able to fly the other thus reducing crew
training cost and increasing productivity for the airlines. As the years passed technology increased.
Traditionally when Boeing designed an airplane they would have to build a mock up. With the
advancement of the computer, the need to build mock ups were no more. The 777 was developed fully
on computers. In 1991 Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and General Dynamics teamed up to build a new
stealth fighter for the United States military. The aircraft would later be called the F 22 Raptor. In
1995 Boeing joined Ukrainian, Russian, and Norway, to form Sea Launch. It was a commercial launch

With fuel costs on the rise in the late 2000s, many airlines saw the 787 as a way to upgrade their fleet.
The 787 was faced with several production problems. Some of which included the failure of a crucial
fuselage section. Consequently, the 787 was not delivered until 2011. On January 2013 the Federal
Aviation Administration issued an airworthiness directive forcing all 787 to be grounded. Until the

What Is The Theme Of Division Convey In The Caged Bird
How is the Theme of Division Convey in the Poems Nothing s Changed and Caged Bird ? First Draft
Nothing s Changed is written by Tatamkhulu Afrika, and Caged bird is written by Maya Angelou.
Both poems express the reality of division and oppression. The themes of Oppression contrasted with
the theme of Freedom are present in both poems. Angelou, a freedom fighter, who has experienced
injustice against her based on her color, wrote Caged Bird a poem that utilises contrasting techniques
and an extended metaphor to show the importance the significance of herself as well as the rest of the
Black community. Nothing s Changed , is also a poem about racism, however now in South Africa.
The poem presents Afrika s views much more literally than Angelou does.

Television And Its Impact On Society
The early nineties thus emerged as a liminal period in the trajectory of media practices. Television
shows during this period were forced to navigate the methodological shift from maintaining the myth
of television as a living reflection of the movement of time to the imminent advancement of the
spectacle. This intermediary condition of the period gave rise to shows with equally confused psychic
realities, often appearing to straddle the thin line between real and fake, and highbrow and lowbrow.
However, deconstruction of the terms real , fake , highbrow and lowbrow with regard to television
reveals that these categorizations are inseparably fastened to its normalized methodological
conventions. Perceptions of the realness of a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To this effect, highbrow refers to the intellectual content of programming and historically disregards
the inherent semiotic power of the visual channel. Something attains the categorization of lowbrow if
it is devoid of thoughtful transmissions of language, the deeply historicized notion of television s
essential content. Thus there is an inherent and widespread critical bias against the rising practice of
television s communicative power through imagery. W.J.T. Mitchell prophetically identified this
phenomenon when he posited an inherent shock of new media (11). Lowbrow television henceforth
chiefly represents an abandonment of the conventionally sanctioned form of transmission and is a
potentially fertile site for the avant garde.
Television that rose to prominence out of these conditions melded both sides of the shifting paradigm
and effectively mirrored modern circumstances. The WWF (now the WWE) entered its Golden Age
when new CEO Vince McMahon introduced its televised content on syndicated national television in
the eighties, and continued to rapidly grow in popularity through television s shifting methodology in
the nineties. The Simpsons was launched in 1989 to immediate mainstream success. Despite these two
programs immense differences in reputation and acclaim, each achieved increasing success through
the early nineties

Cross Country Camp Narrative
Cross country season my sophomore year is one I will never forget! It all started back in August 2013
at cross country camp. It was my first year attending camp because unfortunately we could not have it
my freshman year. Coach Martin had a late start to practice because of a few issues with the
construction of the turf. Luckily, Martin still coached us and still coaches us to this very day! As camp
began we became pretty close as a team. This was the first time Coach had seen his team have a strong
bond of friendship. Even though camp was really fun, it sure was a tough week! The week consisted
of running twice a day and eating lots and lots of food. By the end of the week, your legs felt like
bricks. The first two months of the season had flown by and it was already October. It was ... Show

We were fighting the pain to make it to the last two races of the season, Regionals and States.
Regionals was a very emotional race for us. The previous year we were defeated by Parkersburg and
was unable to attend states. We had ruined the streak for the girls varsity of PHS to make it to states.
We were devastated. This race was different than the others. This race determined who ran in states.
We knew we had to give it our all. At the start line, Coach wrote a 1 on our leg to keep in mind the one
year we didn t make it to states. We knew that staying home this year was not an option. We raced
hard with everything we had. As everyone finished we had this feeling of defeat. We cried and just put
ourselves down. We were not confident in our performances. Coach Martin and P. Sines knew it was a
close race. However they had more information than we did. They knew the results. They watched us
cry as a team and continue to believe we didn t make top three. This was the moment I will never

Symptoms And Treatment Of Acute Pharyngitis
Introduction
According to American Family Physician (2009), acute pharyngitis is a common upper respiratory
tract infection seen in the pediatric population, with most children averaging five sore throats within a
year in the United States. Pharyngitis is the inflammation of the mucosa lining the structure of the
throat including the tonsils, pharynx, uvula, soft palate, and nasopharynx (Burns, Dunn, Brady, Starr,
Blosser, p. 715, 2013). Acute pharyngitis can be caused by both virus and bacteria microorganisms.
About 40 to 60% of acute pharyngitis is of a viral origin (Burns et al., 2013). Adenovirus is the most
common virus associated with acute pharyngitis. Although, there are other associated viruses, which
includes Epstein Barr virus (EBV), cytomegalovirus, influenza virus, parainfluenza, herpes simplex
virus, enterovirus, and human immunodeficiency virus (Burns et al., 2013). There are some common
bacterial organisms that are associated with pharyngitis which includes Streptococcus pyogens (group
A streptococcus), Corynbacterium diphtheria, Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, Neisseria
gonorrhoeare, group C and group G streptocococci, and Mycoplasma pneumonia (Burns et al., 2013).
Streptococcus pyogens accounts for 15 to 30 percent of pharyngitis in children, with group A beta
hemolytic streptococcus being the most common cause in children (Burns et. al., 2013). The bacteria
is mostly transmitted through the respiratory route with a 2 5day incubation period, which has

Evidence Based Practice Pressure Ulcers Evidence based practice (EBP) gives nurses a method to use
critical appraised data and scientific evidence that is proven to confirm the delivery of quality health
care to a patient population. Pressure ulcer prevention continues to be a major and growing concern

Thus, the expected outcome is that there is prevention of skin breakdown relating to pressure ulcers
during hospitalizations for patients.
Step 2: Scope of practice question Pressure ulcers are a problem and can lead to poor patient outcomes
as well as hospital fines. Evidence based studies have shown that the average cost of care in an acute
care hospital for a patient with a stage III or stage IV pressure ulcer reported by the Centers for
Medicare Medicaid Services (CMS) is $43,180 (Jackson, 2008). Pressure ulcers and other skin
breakdowns are among the most significant adverse events causing distress for patients and their care
givers and compromising patients recovery from illness or injury (Gardiner, 2008). It is the tasks of
nurses to ensure prevention of these complications is part of the daily care regimen.
Steps 3, 4, and 5: Team An interdisciplinary team of professional staff is a necessity to overcome the
issue of pressure ulcer development among patients. Relevant stakeholders would include a nurse,
nurse aide, dietitian, and a hospitalist. The primary responsibilities of the nurse consist of completing
and documenting skin and risk assessments, monitor progress and/or changes in medical/skin
conditions, report patient problems to the hospitalist, and work with the wound team

  • 2. Goodfellas Movie Essay Goodfellas is one of the most significant crime movies. As such, this picture addresses the motives and rationale behind wrongful activities perpetrated by gangsters in a convincing manner. It also examines practical implications of their moral choices. The movie traces the life of an aspiring gangster, Henry. At the beginning, he is an ambitious adolescent willing to work for the local mafia. He succeeds, gradually rises through the ranks, and wins respect from the boss, Paul Cicero. This protagonist also makes friends with his colleagues James (Henry s personal role model) and Tommy (who is amiable yet almost sociopathic when offended). Henry absorbs the following two principles as the main precondition for success in this environment: ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... First, Henry and his friends uphold their ethos of merciless retribution for any real or perceived threat. As a consequence, they are continuously resorting to violence, even when it is not necessary. Second, the internal logic of their lives, i.e., striving for wealth and success as well as going over the top on a regular basis, enhances the risks of their activities and causes constant paranoia. Third, their ostentatious machismo presents some problems regarding Henry s health (alcohol and drugs) and personal life (infidelity). • 3. A Research Study On Vitiligo Pathogenesis 4. Discussion Vitiligo is an acquired depigmentation disorder of skin and hair. It is a cosmetically disfiguring disease caused due to melanocytes destruction [Moretti et al., 2002], however, the pathogenesis of such disease is still conflicting. Many previous studies tried to explain the pathogenesis according to many points of view, they showed that it could either be an autoimmune mechanism, a neural dysfunction, metabolic mechanism, or genetic causes [Moretti et al., 2002, Zhang et al,2005, Yazici et al., 2006]. In this study, we decided to assess the genetic factor in vitiligo pathogenesis. Our study detected a non significant association between IFN γ +874A/T or +2109A/G gene polymorphism and vitiligo susceptibility. In line with our finding Dwivedi, et al,2013 couldn t consider IFN γ +874 T/A polymorphism as a genetic risk factor for generalized vitiligo. Also, an Iranian study, couldn t confirm a relation between IFN γ +874 T/A gene polymorphism and vitiligo risk [Namian et al., 2009]. When we studied the different haplotype frequencies of INF γ (+874A/T) and INF γ (+2109A/G) polymorphisms in vitiligo patients and control distributions, we observed a significant elevation of the haplotype TA in vitiligo patients when compared with control group (P 0.03), this indicated increased risk of vitiligo with this haplotype. To the best of our knowledge, no previous studies were done to assess IFN γ +2109A/G gene polymorphism in relation to vitiligo and no ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Golden Retriever Research Paper Golden Retriever History: Where and When Did They Originate? A Golden Retriever is one of the most popular and recognizable breeds of today. Its origins, however, were a subject of debate for a very long time. Many argued that they came from a whole pack of Russian tracker sheepdogs bought from a circus. But it wasn t until the earliest records of its history came out in 1952 that a Golden Retriever had an origin to look back into. Time to set the record straight. The Golden Retriever is an early 19th century breed that was developed after a long line of breeding from the Irish setter, Tweed water spaniel and Newfoundland dogs, with a goal to develop a hunting dog that has the size, endurance and ability to retrieve a large number of game ... • 6. Illiteracy And Poverty In America I. Introduction: There is a strong correlation between student illiteracy and poverty. 25% of children in America never learn how to read. Children who grow up in poverty stricken areas have extremely limited exposure to reading materials. In addition, children living in poverty experience challenges in obtaining nutritional food and tend to live in an unsafe environment, which can affect educational advancement. According to the Heart of America foundation, 61 percent of families living in poverty do not have children s books in their homes. Consequently, children living in poverty already have a 50 percent weaker vocabulary than their wealthier peers at the start of school (Hart). Along with the lack of reading materials, lacking proper ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Taking children on field trips to their nearby library to teach them about the system is very important. They can later get their personal library card and return to rent out a book they wish to read. This is a way to promote out of school reading. III. Conclusion: Maximizing student illiteracy in Miami Dade County comes down to three critical factors. First, providing students with more books at school. Secondly, giving students the knowledge and opportunity to read at home. And lastly, giving the teachers the proper background on the students they will be teaching so that the academics are approached accordingly. By meticulously approaching each of these areas, Miami Dade County will be able to significantly increase student literacy in poverty stricken schools. Ernestine Walls Benedict said, Reading empowers children by providing a virtual passport to explore the world. They can learn about places, people and things very different from their own experiences, as well as see themselves reflected in other children s lives. • 7. The Scientific Theory Of Science Science is based on fact through the processes of falsification. It is a utility function in society and is widely consistent with the evidence of history and practice of rational thinking. Progress in science since the fourteenth century has been revolutionary and valuable in the methods used for rationality and reasoning. Scientific methods that are used to establish rationality is due to the simple, general and rigorous explanations of the phenomena, (Diamond, 1998). This essay will explore the reasons to the extent of the role of science in reason, displaying perspectives from respected philosophers, politicians and scientists throughout time. Politician rather than scientist, Francis Bacon (1561 1627) was the man who made a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... His methods were also able to revolutionise reasoning as he was against the use of knowledge that had been inherited from the past. Following Bacon s methods, scientists and philosophers have adopted his methods and utilised the knowledge to better the results in order to establish the truth. Bacon s work should be seen as a part of a widespread cultural revolution accelerated by the rise of the printing press in the 15 th century (source). Bacon believed that scientific knowledge increases and grows. Bacon s methods of testing hypotheses was highly valuable in the movement of science as a rational enterprise. Furthermore, scientist Rene Descartes (1596 1650) changed the world from within the realm of practicality to reasoning through the applications of thinking rather than acting upon or doing, I think therefore, I am. This gave reasoning in society a far more prominent role. Descartes is believed to have been the first philosopher to use reason in the development of the natural sciences. He used maths and physics as his basis for reasoning in the sciences. Primarily, Descartes had three visions in which he was certain a divine spirit had led him to reveal a new philosophy. Descartes believed that all truths were linking together and in order to find the fundamental truth, continuing with logic and reasoning would broaden the use of the sciences ... It is bordered in the north by the Mediterranean Sea and on the east by the Red sea and the Indian Ocean and in the west by the Atlantic Ocean. Africa is known to have many diverse environments, which include arid areas, semi arid, Tropical rainforests, Savanna, vast swamps and snowcapped mountains in the south of Africa. The first ever civilization in Africa was in Egypt along the river Nile. This civilization later spread to the other parts of Africa. The emergence of civilization in Africa provided a framework for most of developments in African history. There were different setups cultural and political aspects when civilization was emerging. The Egyptian civilization was the earliest and it was one of the catalysts in the development of civilization in other parts of Africa. The civilization began around 3000 BC. Its civilization is known to be one of the longest serving civilizations in the world s history. Egypt is located in the Nile valley of northeast Africa. The life of Ancient Egypt was centered on the river Nile and the fertile land around it for the purpose of agriculture and commercial purposes. • 9. Internal And External Factors Of A Company Internal and external factors Dyne and Pierce (2008) explained that there are many factors which are inducing a change process in a company, as employees at all levels of organisational hierarchy are the agents of change though they are also barriers to it. Change happens when the forces of external environment are forcing to change existing circumstances. So companies wanting to change when there is fall in market share, new product has been launched, which is caught in the environmental scan. Managers therefore will try to stay of competition, may lead to analysing own strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats. This leads to understanding what capabilities and competencies are existing to make a counter offer in the marketplace. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These elements like communication pattern, delegation of tasks, leadership style are barriers when they do not aid to mutual information exchange, and decision making to aid change process. Summers (2011) opined that at individual employee level, there can barriers like no awareness and knowledge about new QMS, or even they may not have motivation to unlearn the old and learn the new. Acceptance and adoption of a new work method may find no employees as it conflicts with their existing work standards. This is closely linked to their individual cultural beliefs, organisational work culture which also affect individual abilities, which when falls short, needs new skill sets to be learnt. Many employees are unable to cope with the steep learning curve, as each of them have individual differences in learning new skills, show different levels of abilities in applying new work methods (Dean and Bowen, 2008). Kerzner (2009) acknowledged that to bring in change to any technology, financial support to change production systems is needed and hence the most liquid form of resource to buy other resources is also important in organisations. • 10. David Hume s Theory of Ethics Essay David Hume is considered to be one of the big three British empiricists, along with Hobbes and Locke, and lived near the end of the Enlightenment. The Catholic Church was losing its control over science, politics and philosophy and the Aristotelian world view was being swallowed up by a more mechanistic viewpoint. Galileo found the theory provided by Copernicus to be correct, that our earth was not the center of everything, but the celestial bodies including the earth circled the sun. Mathematicians abounded. Pascal developed the first mechanical calculator and Newtonian physics was breaking new ground. Not even the arts were immune. Within the same era Mary Shelley authored Frankenstein: or the Modern Prometheus. The main theme for this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The latter being the kind that he uses as a naturalist. David Hume s most famous quote is Reason is, and ought only to be the slave of the passions, and can never pretend to any other office than to serve and obey them. To understand the implications of this quote as a basis for an ethical theory you need to understand that every other ethical theory attempts to derive how things ought to be from how things are. The jumps from matters of fact and relations of ideas perceived by reason, to value judgments perceived by emotions, are made in Hume s opinion with no logical reason. There is nothing contradictory in the statement the sun will not rise in the morning, it is not unreasonable. We only feel that it ought to continue rising in the morning. The scientific method uses inductive reasoning to construct a hypothesis and Hume does not contend that it should not be used. It has been useful thus far in making predictions and it is the only tool that we have for understanding the world around us. David Hume s ethical theory sits between philosophy and modern day psychology. He uses the empirical method to study the natural tendencies of human beings to engage their emotions, and in our emotions is where morality could be understood best. One must remember ... • 11. Effects of Insulin on IGF-1 Receptors Pref 1 has been linked to IGF 1 and ERK MAPK pathways where prevention of ERK phosphorylation by the MAPK/ERK kinase (MEK) inhibitor PD98059 enhances adipocytes differentiation (Wang, 2010). Insulin also binds to IGF 1 receptors with low affinity (Smith, 1988) and stimulates the formation of an active Ras GTP complex and ERK MAPK pathway (Porras, 1996) and the PI3K pathway. Both these pathways appear to be required for adipogenesis (Sale, 1995; Sakaue, 1998; Tang, 2005). The Ras GTP complex activates RAF kinase which is phosphorylated to induce MAPK. The phosphorylated MAPK interacts with Elk1. Phohosphorylation of Ekl1 facilitates binding to the mediator complex via the Med23 subunit (Stevens, 2002; Wang, 2005). The mediator complex is a multi protein complex which bridges gene specific transcription factors and transcriptional machinery. The Mediator Med23 (Sur2) subunit was originally identified as a genetic suppressor of a hyperactive Ras phenotype in C.elegans (Singh, 1995). Elk1 is a member of the ternary complex factor family and an important regulator of adipogenesis. The Elk1/Med23 interaction controls the expression of Krox20 in a MAPK dependent manner by promoting a productive preinitiation complex which leads to transcription (Wang, 2009). Every school should have corporal punishment in schools because it teaches kids to have good behavior. In 2014, 94% of parents with kids from three to four years old reported they had smacked their kid. This shows if a kid is acting up or not being good give him a quick smack and it should change their perspective on the situation. Corporal punishment should be in schools because if a kid is being bad in class they will most likely not do it again. They would not be afraid of their teacher either because they are most likely not the one spanking them if they re bad. In many schools bad behavior could get people detention, Anastasia explained In 19 states, that behavior could get you spanked . This is a better punishment because detention does nothing but just make people stay at school for longer, but if they get a spanking they might not want to get in trouble again. Most people think that kids need to be safe and nurtured but if they aren t getting in trouble than they will have all those things. It also helps the school have a good learning environment with no distractions during class. Finney says, Detentions are not big enough for some students . This shows how things can be sorted out better with a couple smacks and to make sure they have better behavior. Every school should have corporal punishment in schools because it teaches kids to be respectful. In the 2005 2006 school year many students were acting up in class or doing bad things, and it shows that year having the most reported swats ever. Symptoms And Treatment Of Acute Pharyngitis Introduction According to American Family Physician (2009), acute pharyngitis is a common upper respiratory tract infection seen in the pediatric population, with most children averaging five sore throats within a year in the United States. Pharyngitis is the inflammation of the mucosa lining the structure of the throat including the tonsils, pharynx, uvula, soft palate, and nasopharynx (Burns, Dunn, Brady, Starr, Blosser, p. 715, 2013). There are some common bacterial organisms that are associated with pharyngitis which includes Streptococcus pyogens (group A streptococcus), Corynbacterium diphtheria, Arcanobacterium haemolyticum, Neisseria gonorrhoeare, group C and group G streptocococci, and Mycoplasma pneumonia (Burns et al., 2013). Streptococcus pyogens accounts for 15 to 30 percent of pharyngitis in children, with group A beta hemolytic streptococcus being the most common cause in children (Burns et. al., 2013).
