ACHIEVING A SOCIETY OF LEADERS
CIVIL SOCIETY
A more thoughtful public begins with the understanding of civil society and its
relationship with a democratic government. When I say civil society, I don t mean
just any U.S. citizen or community. To me, a democratic civil society represents the
responsibility of each individual to stay politically informed, to check their sources,
to question information presented to them, to reflect on their values, and to build an
environment where people can come together despite differences. Recognition of
these responsibilities is what creates structure and efficiency in organizations of any
type.
It is easy to assume that the explanation of civil society above describes only
leaders, whether they may be politicians, school principals, CEOs, etc. However, I
want to note that a person doesn t have to hold these types of positions to be a
leader. In a more thoughtful public, all individuals should be open and capable of
practicing these leadership skills and representing the values of democracy. The key
feature of a more thoughtful public is that it is universal no one is excluded, and
everyone is affected by it. I would argue that this is a prerequisite to a free public
and successful democracy.

my life, and it has changed the way I approach athletics and life outside of sports.
For most of my life, I was skilled in organized sports, especially soccer, which I had

that I would make the JV team for sure. At tryouts, I went through the motions of
each drill. I breezed through the conditioning tests, doing the bare minimum for each

one of us separately to meet. The head coach started off by saying that I was a good

motivated enough to be picked. I was so shocked, my mind blanked immediately.
Getting cut from the soccer team was a wakeup call that taught me a hard lesson:

I ve learned that there is no one leader in any team. There are many different things
that someone can do within a team to be a leader and show their leadership skills.
To me leadership is when someone in a team passes along knowledge or skills to
someone else in the team. This knowledge or skill passed along must be beneficial
and must be new knowledge and a new experience for the person being led. Anyone
can be a leader if given the right resources. This belief has really shown me that it is
a lot easier to be a leader than I had once thought. You don t have to be the one in
charge or the one with the most power to be a leader. There is usually more than one
leader in every team. It is easier to have people who are different in a team because it
makes it easier for everyone to showcase their skills and show their leadership. My
thought process about leadership now, is fairly different than what I had thought
at the beginning of this semester. I still do believe in some of my original beliefs,
but I now understand more what it is to show leadership and actually be a leader.

In the play, Macbeth, written by William Shakespeare, the protagonist and tragic of
the story, Macbeth, makes a series of decisions that, ultimately, lead to his downfall.
In the play, prior to ambition overtaking Macbeth, he was a loyal and courageous
general to his home, Scotland. However, as the story progresses and he reveals his
true character, he becomes a ruthless man, with no limitations in regards to reaching
his almighty goal of becoming King of England, which leads him to dishonesty,

There is an obvious resemblance at this comparison, as the witches, who were
presented as being foul and ruthless creatures, now consider this man wicked, due
to his crimes committed out of ambition. Macbeth is now seen as equal to the three
cruel witches. In their meeting, Macbeth is warned by the witches to beware
Macduff. Naturally, Macbeth s response upon hearing the warning is to kill
Macduff and his family. He declares that from this moment the very firstlings of my
