points out the theme of wealth through the high ceiling, chandelier, fire place and
the size of the dining room hinting that the house is large enough to be a mansion.

2.1 Synthesis of 1,3 butadienes
Dienes can be synthesised from aldehydes and ketones using the Wittig reaction. The
Wittig reaction facilitates the synthesis of new carbon carbon double bonds at
specific locations in aldehydes and ketones (Bernard Ford, 1983). The overall
reaction mechanism is shown in Figure 1.
Protocols for synthesising 1,3 butadienes from aldehydes and ketones have been
established in the literature. The synthesis protocol proposed by Greatrex et al.
(2014) was used and reactions using several aldehydes (cinnamaldehyde,
piperonaldehyde, and 2 chloro benzaldehyde) were successfully performed to
synthesise the required butadienes 1, 2, and 3, Scheme 2.
The general approach involved transforming the aldehydes at the site of the carbonyl
group. Use of an appropriate triphenylphosphonium halide (methyl for
cinnamaldehyde, and allyl for piperonal and 2 chloro benzaldehyde) afforded the
correct 1,3 butadiene. Deprotonation of the triphenylphosphonium halide was
achieved using potassium tert butoxide reacted under an atmosphere of nitrogen. An
observable colour change was observed on addition of the triphenylphosphonium
halide to the solvent, and subsequently on the addition of an aldehyde. Reactions were
followed by thin liquid chromatography (TLC), and the butadienes were purified via
chromatography (1 and 2 via column chromatography, and 3 via dry flash

While reading The Spirit Level I came into conclusion that the inequality in

This is a report of my reflection on the court trip that my class, CLU 3M attened on
May 18, 2016. This report contains my reflection on what I did that day, what I
saw, and my opinion on our judicial system. In this report some of the terms that I
recognized during the trips are bolded, and I have elaborated on the meanings of
the terms. I will conclude this report with my opinion the court process. Brad and I
walked into the provincial court on Wyndham street at approximately 8:40 am.
Provincial courts are the lower courts in the jurisdiction. As soon as I noticed 4
clipboards that had pages with a list of names and timing on them, this was also
referred as a docket.The names were the offenders of the case, and there time
represented their trial time. An offender is the person who had committed the
illegal act. As I walked down the narrow hall I joined in with the rest of the class.
We were sitting in the waiting area, and near the sign that said duty counsel. Duty
counsels are lawyers that can give the accused advise on what they should when
the accused do not have a lawyer. As we waited a lawyer came outside of the office
and yelled, If anybody needs duty counsel . I noticed there were two court rooms,
both had their own dockets. The court room was separated by the waiting area, and
the vending machine. As I waited for Mr. Fast to come, I looked around and saw

Two experiments were done last time due to some circumstances that made the class
to lack time and to be late compared to the official class syllabus. The students were
able to accomplished the job by equally dividing the time into two. The first
experiment was about Kundt s tube. In this experiment, longitudinal sound waves will
be produced in a metal rod and an air column. Using the properties of wave motion ,
the frequency of the sound and the speed of sound in the rod can be determined.
