FACTORS
AFFECTING A
CLIMATE
Learning Objectives:
Explain how different factors affect the climate of
an area. (S9ES-IIIe-30)
Label the parts of the Globe
Locate the three climatic zones
Explain the relationship between latitude and
climate of a certain place and;
Justify why the coldest place on Earth are found
near the Poles.
REVIEWING
What comes to your mind when
you hear the word Latitude?
Why do you think Latitude affects
the climate?
Latitude is the main factor
affecting global climate. The further
we go from the equator, the
temperature drops and the cooler it
gets. This is because we know that
earth is curved which means earth
gets hotter at equator and places
near the equator.
Any area within the Tropic Zone is
within a latitude closest to the
equator, between the Tropic of
Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
These areas receive the most direct
sunlight throughout the year and
usually only experience two
seasons: The Wet Season and The
Dry Season.
Temperate Zones
The middle latitudes where most
of the planet’s population lives and
are the entire area between the
Tropical Zones and Arctic Zones.
This zone is the only one with all
four seasons: Spring, Summer,
Winter and Fall.
POLAR ZONES
The Arctic and Antartica, also known
as the South and North Poles are the
Polar Regions with the coldest
temperature. These regions have the
coldest temperature because they
receive the least direct sunlight.
They’re at the highest latitudes, and
thus they have distinct climates.
5 Major Parallels of Latitudes from North to
South
Arctic Circle
Tropic of Cancer
Equator
Tropic of Capricorn
Antarctic Circle
Activity 3.7
When the Sun’s Ray Strikes
GUIDE QUESTIONS:
1.Which part of the earth receives most of the
Sun’s Rays?
2.Why does the amount of heat received by
places far from the equator become less?
3. Why are the coldest places on Earth
found near the Poles?
4. Why are the places with high
temperatures found at the equator?
5. How does latitude affect climate?
What are the 3 climatic
zones?
Explain the relationship
between latitude and
climate of a certain place
Why do Philippines is
considered as a Tropical
Country?
Why do places near the
poles has cold climate?
Directions: Choose the letter of the best answer.

degrees South of the Equator?

start moving back towards the
Equator?
A.45 degrees
B.90 degrees

3. The area near the Equator, between
about 23.5 degrees North and South
latitude
A.Temperate Zone
