Mosaicattenuation Patterns
3) Mosaicattenuation pattern Mosaic attenuation refers to inhomogeneous attenuation seen at
inspiratory CT. This pattern may represent patchy interstitial disease, small airways disease, or
vascular disease. In patients with sarcoidosis, mosaic attenuation most often results from small
airways involvement by granulomas or fibrosis, which may lead to obstruction .In pulmonary
sarcoidosis, nodular thickening along of the airway (or bronchovascular bundle) from the lobar to
subsegmental level is a common finding due to non caseating granulomas in bronchial mucosa.
[21]To verify that the CT finding is caused by air trapping, a finding of mosaic attenuation on
inspiratory images must be compared with the parenchymal appearance on expiratory images.[18]

Inherit The Wind, By Charles Darwin
Every living thing on this planet has evolved from the same original specie. Having this
information, could it not be concluded that all living things are, to some degree, related? Yes. To
further explain, evolution is a theory that states that organisms have diversified or in other words,
have changed into a more complex living thing. In the book Inherit The Wind, the townsfolk of the
play disagree heavily with the theory of evolution. Common ancestry is the theory that states that all
living things share a common ancestor or common descendent, which then ties into evolution.
Speciation, both allopatric and parapatric, show evidence for common ancestry. Speciation is when
new species arise due to an evolutionary process. There are multiple and observable accounts that
are used to support the theory of common ancestry. Charles Darwins book, The Descent of Man And
Selection in Relation to Sex, goes into specifics with these accounts with placental mammals.
Placental mammals are mammals that nourish their embryos using the mother s blood supply.
Common Ancestry in placental mammals provides sufficient scientific evidence, such as the
similarities in bone structures and genetic coding between animals, to support the theory of
evolution.
One of the biggest arguments against the theory of evolution and the theory of common ancestry is
that they are theories. A scientific theory is an explanation for something in the natural world
supported by facts and has successfully gone

Legally Blonde Was Released, Telling The Story Of Elle Woods
Fourteen years ago, the romantic comedy Legally Blonde was released, telling the story of Elle
Woods, a ditzy sorority girl who follows her ex boyfriend, Warner, to Harvard Law School in
hopes of proving to him that she is not just another dumb blonde and winning him back. Elle
studies hard, forgets about Warner, and ends up graduating as valedictorian with job offers from
multiple prestigious law firms. While making audiences laugh, the movie also inspired those who
were undervalued and doubted by others to go to college, with the message that if they studied and
worked hard enough, anything is possible. However, regardless of work ethic and intelligence, this
aspiration is impossible for most. Even if one is accepted into their dream university, there is still
the underlying issue of how they will pay for their education. For many, college is an important
step in achieving success, but paying for a high quality college education is impossible. Even
for those who find a way to pay, their chances of success are sabotaged by the price of their
degree, despite the importance of a college education. Although in the twenty first century there
is significant emphasis on the necessity of a college degree, qualified students are prevented
from reaching their full potential because of the rising cost of a college education. College prices
are rapidly rising; public four year college tuitions are rising at an average of 5.6% every year,
while public two year college tuitions are

A Study On Green Processing
Chapter 1 Introduction
1.1Green Computing
Green processing, likewise called green innovation, is the ecologically mindful utilization of PCs
and also related assets. Such practices embody the usage of vitality effective focal handling units
(CPUs), servers and in addition peripherals and also decreased asset utilization and in addition
fitting transfer of electronic waste (e waste).
Government regulation, however well meaning, is just piece of a general green processing logic.
The work propensities for PC clients and also organizations can be changed to minimize unfriendly
effect on the worldwide environment.
The primary aftereffect of green processing examination brought about the Sleep mode capacity for
PC screens. This capacity permits the PC to enter and also by mode after a pre set period goes with
no client movement. After this, many concepts like vitality expense bookkeeping, flimsy customer
arrangements, e waste, and also virtualization were created.
Green registering is ordinarily alluded to as Green IT. The thought is to guarantee the slightest
human effect on nature. Aside from this, it expects to accomplish ecological manageability.
The initial move toward the green registering development was the initiation of the Energy Star
program in 1992. This served as a deliberate name that was honored to PC items that were effective
in demonstrating that they utilized least vitality while augmenting proficiency. The rating was
honored to screens, iceboxes, TV

Energy efficiency is essential to provide citizens with...
Energy efficiency is essential to provide citizens with functioning electricity and fuel. The
energy I would use to fuel my city is hydroelectric because its pros and cons outweigh the pros
and cons of solar, coal, wind, and nuclear energy. The most efficient energy source for my city is
hydroelectric energy. Hydroelectric energy is the most efficient for many reasons. Hydroelectric
energy s power fuel is water, which does not give off harmful chemicals or waste in the air or
water; keeping our planet very clean. Hydroelectric energy also has constant power. Its power is
generated by moving water. Water is constantly moving. After hydroelectric plants are produced
their energy can produce electricity very cheaply. Hydroelectric plants can... Show more content on

I would not choose solar energy for my city for many reasons. Solar panels still gives off pollution
produced as a result of manufacturing, transportation, and installation. The production of energy
is rather noisy from the use of fuels. Solar energy can only be used during daylight hours. Bad
weather can decrease the efficiency of solar energy. Modern solar panels are only around 20%
efficient. The initial investment of solar cells is extremely high. Solar energy has too many cons to
be the best possible source of energy.
Coal is also a very destructive source of energy, and is definitely not the supreme source. Coal is
a non renewable resource. Coal creates the most CO2 in the environment. This destroys the ozone
layer and leads to many climate problems. CO2 is toxic at concentrations above 5 percent. Coal
is also the largest contributor to global warning. Coal causes mass destruction of the environment
around coal mines. Coal mining is the 2nd highest emitter of methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Coal mining has high levels of radiation. Coal plants energy sources release the more radiation
than any other energy source! Wind power is a very inconsistent energy source. The wind is
unsteady and unpredictable. Wind power is quite expensive and hard to manage. Both residents
and commercials companies must pay for the expensive power wind turbines provide. Wind farms

observed them sweating profusely and shaking. It was obvious to me that both were nervous of
police presence. It should be noted the driver will be referred to as arrestee 1 and the passenger as
arrestee 2. I then asked arrestee 1 for his driver s license, registration, and proof of insurance at
which point the arrestee advised, fuck you I m not giving you shit, it s not a crime to drive with no

Outsiders In The Outsider
Things are rough all over. (Hinton 35) Ponyboy Curtis says this in the book The Outsiders by
S.E. Hinton. An outsider is someone who is different or doesn t fit in in a certain way, which is
why Hinton never emphasizes who the outsiders are; readers can interpret this book and the
outsiders in their own way because Hinton proves that everyone is an outsider in their own
manner. While it can be argued that every character is an outsider, the main outsiders in this
book are Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and Cherry Valance. In a neighborhood of Greasers and
Socs, Ponyboy Curtis is a part of a gang on the greaser side. This gang consists of Ponyboy,
obviously, Johnny Johnnycake Cade, Darrel Darry Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, Keith Two Bit
Mathews, Dallas Dally Winston, and Steve Randle. Although they re all bonded by their grease,
Ponyboy does not completely fit in with the rest. [Ponyboy] liked [his] books and clouds and
sunsets. (Hinton 66) Greasers are not known to use their heads or enjoy little details, but Ponyboy
Curtis does. He... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is like Ponyboy in the sense of enjoying small things, but in different ways. Useless... fighting
s no good.... (Hinton 148) Johnny comes to this realization and says this because he doesn t
believe in fighting. He sees no reason in it and definitely does not find joy in it like the rest of
the greasers. The average greaser finds happiness in violence and dirtiness, (as Cherry Valance, a
Soc, says) but Johnny Cade is able to find comfort in cleaner, gentler things, such as sunsets,
poems, and reading. One of the main moments where Johnny shows this is when he talks about a
sunset and says, The mist was what was pretty...All gold and silver. (Hinton 66). He is very quiet
and preserved, which is why the gang treats him as the pet. Although he and Ponyboy share the idea
of loving these things, Johnny loves them in his own way and finds the deeper meaning in

Review of 12 Angry Men
In Twelve Angry Men, the prosecution and the defense have rested and the jury is filing into the
jury room to decide if a young Spanish American boy is innocent or guilty of murdering his father.
What starts out as an open and shut case of murder becomes instead a mini drama of each of the
jurors lives, preconceptions and prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused and
ultimately, each other. Based on the stage play, all of the film s action takes place in the juryroom.
On the surface, the case appears to be open and shut due to several facts: 1) The defendant
possess only a weak alibi 2) a knife the boy claimed to have lost is then found at the murder scene
by the police 3) several witnesses claimed to have been heard screaming, observed the killing or
the boy running from the scene. In the beginning, 11 of the jurors immediately vote guilty with
only Juror No. 8 casting a not guilty vote. At first the juror(Mr. Davis) bases the vote more for the
sake of discussion. The jurors in the room must believe beyond a reasonable doubt that the boy
defendant is guilty of murdering his father. As the jury s deliberations unfold, the story quickly
becomes an intimate study of the jurors very complex personalities. These personalities range from
the wise, bright and empathetic to the arrogant or prejudiced and even merciless. This provides the
immediate backdrop to Mr. Davis attempts to convince the other jurors that a not guilty verdict
might be appropriate

Fascism In Germany
Fascism succeeded in Germany, not as a result of Hitler being elected. There were many factors
that lead Hitler and the Nazi party to succeed. Hitler took advantage of situations such as the
Great Depression and the Reichstag fire to help the Nazi Party gain support and obtain power of
Germany. Along with taking advantage of those factors Hitler was able to convince the members
of Reichstag to pass the Enabling Act. Another way Hitler was able to gain more support was by
rewarding the people of Germanywith organizations such as the Gleichstang and strength through
joy. The Great Depression of 1929 impacted Germany tremendously. Already gone through the
Hyperinflation of 1923, the struggling Germany economy was facing another challenge. Many
Germans encountered unemployment along with German farmers facing the threat of price
declines of commodities and also the declining of markets. With many Germans facing
unemployment this meant they were not able to earn money so it was difficult to get food or other
necessities. This economic hardship gave Hitler the opportunity to reach out to the people of
Germany who were outraged and worried about their future. So, this economic tragedy brought
new supporters, voters, activists to the Nazi Party, which led them to gain more popularity. With
more support and popularity, the Nazi Party kept on growing and becoming more powerful. In
January 1933 Hitler was designated as Chancellor. He did not have much power at the beginning of

Simpson Evenness
The results show that Manuel Antonio has the highest Simpson s Index of Diversity with a .92. I
believe that these results are miss leading. The Simpson s Index of Diversity takes into account
both species richness and evenness. Richness is defined as the number of species per sample and
evenness is defined as a measure of the relative abundance of the different speciesmaking up the
richness of an area (Country Side Info). Manuel Antonio was very even, all of the plantspecies in
the area had one or two individuals. The other samples that I took all had at least one species that
was much more prevalent than the others. Due to evenness being a main factor in the Simpson s
Diversity of Index is why according to this formula Manuel Antonio... Show more content on

The first drawback is we do not know the names of the plants. If we knew the names of the plants
or at least what families they are in we could gain a lot more from our research. Secondly, how
we counted the moss may lead to incorrect results. We counted the plants by number but
originally we just wrote down, for example, one patch of moss. We then had to go back and
assign it a number based on the percent of area we thought the moss was covering. Thirdly, our
sample sizes were small. If they were larger we would have had a bigger picture of the biodiversity
in the area. For example, in Monteverde if we had a larger sample size it may have reached to
where the plants were denser farther off the trail. This would lead to Monteverde having a
higher Simpson Index of Diversity. Lastly, there is always human bias. I chose my spots and
many things influenced where I chose such as quantity of plants and how pretty the plants were.
If I had to do this experiment over again I would use larger sample sizes so I could get a better
idea of the biodiversity. I would also want to fix the way we accounted for moss. Lastly, I would
want to know more about the plants we were counting so more information could be extracted from

Analysis Of The Hurt Locker
The statement, The Hurt Locker is one of the greatest war films ever made is a loaded comment
that forces the viewer to consider several things. First, it requires the viewer to identify what makes
a good war film: is it the action, the heroism, the filming technique, sound effect etc.? All these
things are important to consider when determining the quality of a war movie. I argue that The
Hurt Lockeris one of the greatest war films ever made because the film reveals war s brutal side,
how it removes the mundane, and its destruction of innocence, while also portraying a realistic
hero that one could hope to emulate. The first reason The Hurt Locker should be considered
great is because of its accurate portrayal about the horrors of war. Chris Hedges repeatedly states,
[War] is peddled by mythmakers historians, war correspondents, filmmakers, novelists, and the
state... that war as displayed by the entertainment industry might, in most cases, as well be ballet
and it is because of this that the masses get a false sense of what war entails (Hedges 2002, pg.3,
84). The Hurt Locker does the opposite of that, director Kathryn Bigelowdecides not to follow the
typical structure of a war movie and elects to include the graphic images and sounds that remove
the cover from this dream and reveal a nightmare. Specifically, the scene that stands out is when
Staff Sargent William James finds the body of a boy who strongly resembles a friend named
Beckham, which has been turned into a body bomb.
Here the viewer is forced to look at the body, which is bloated due to it being stuffed with
explosives, and the crude stitching used to close it. Bigelow elects to use a variety of close up
and medium shots to include the reaction that Will and his squad have while staring at the body
(Corrigan 2015). This alone is enough to make the viewer uncomfortable, but where she truly
excels is during Will s removal of the bomb. Hedges states that one of the requirement to wake us
up from the typical film is the deafening and disturbing noise (Hedges 2002, pg.84). Bigelow
accomplishes this during the bomb removal by adding a loud snap every time Will cuts a suture
(Bigelow 2009). Now, even if a person attempts to look away, this

Winston Smith From Spongebob Squarepants
Intro Essay I am sure that everyone, at least once, has compared themselves to a character from
their favorite literary work or movie. Oftentimes parallels can be, and are drawn between the
audience members and the characters on the page or screen. Other times people contrast themselves
to characters, pointing out the stark differences between their real world lives and the high
adventure thrills of the life of the characterin question. In this essay,I will compare myself to the
personalities of Winston Smith from 1984, putting focus on our shared inquisitive and skeptical
nature, as well as that of Spongebob Squarepants, with his cheerful disposition and sense of
childlike wonder. And finally, I will be comparing myself with Russell, the kid from UP.

As the book progresses we see Winston gradually growing more and more doubtful that his
dystopian environment is the way things should be. He is seen searching for the truth and is
always weary about what may lie ahead. Although I do not ask questions on the same grand scale
as Winston, I do have a naturally inquisitive, and somewhat skeptical nature. I find myself
interested in the most abstract and bizarre concepts, sometimes relating to the possibility of time
travel through quantum particles, and other times something as trivial as movie trivia. Despite my
desire to learn new concepts and ideas, I can often times lose interest in things I have trouble
understanding. This is where I believe Winston and I share some common ground. We are both
incredibly curious and at the same time held back by skepticism of the

Overwhelming Thoughts And Circumstances Can Suck That Life
Overwhelming thoughts and circumstances can suck that life out of a person. Through a slow but
sure process, I now identify myself as a culprit of stress. For example, I have entrapped myself in
the pit of going from one extreme to another, contributing to my pessimist onlook on life. Further,
when I observe a buildup of someone neglecting to pursue their priorities, I can vent out in anger at
that person. Also, if I do not put my thoughts into actions, I set myself up for negative experiences
in relationships. Though I am pessimistic, struggle with anger, and have dealt with hurt in a
relationship, I targeted these issues and chose to learn from them.

From my test score regarding anger, I found out that I have a naturally moderate level of anger.
People can experience extreme bouts of agitation in ways involving delays, lack of resources,
losses, or failures. An example of my anger occurs in the category of delays. When my siblings do
not pick up after themselves, bitterness towards them can increase within me. Moreover, due to my
somewhat bossy personality, my siblings consider me the mother in my household. Thus, when I
acknowledge someone s laziness in their responsibilities, typically, I ask the slacker to do her job
again. Yet, when I begin to see that siblingconstantly forgetting to do that specific job, anger
within me can harbor. Immediately, I make assumptions as to why she acts that way and can feel
stressed out about the problem.
Next, I angrily communicate the sibling s downfall considering the assumption I have of her,
and I tell her how she must fix the problem. Without asking why she did not do her job, I
insensitively corrected her. Or if the sibling has an explanation for her lethargy, I resist to show
sympathy because of my frustration at the moment. However, after a scenario like this, I then can
feel distressed at my own pride of thinking that I am right and my sibling is wrong. In the end, I
identify that usually I am the one more in the wrong than the sibling, taking the path of humility.
Therefore, after an argument with a sibling and once my anger has calmed down enough, I go back

Nathaniel Hawthorne s Influence On American Literature...
Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the most important authors in the history of American literature
and the genre of Romanticism or Dark Romanticism, due to his unique style of writing and his
focus upon subjects of Puritan religion and the unknown. I consider Hawthorne an important
author, due to the fact that he skillfully and accurately based his fictional writings upon happenings
of colonial times, was one of the first authors to display unfortunate outcomes for his characters
immoral choices according to Puritan beliefs, and wrote of things that were considered taboo in his
time, such as witchcraft, scientific innovation and experimentation. I strongly believe that
Hawthorne s influence for his writings were his Puritan ancestral background, his fascination with
Puritan beliefs, and his interest in what was considered the unknown such as witchcraft and science.
According to the Norton Anthology Textbook Vol. B, Nathaniel Hawthorne
was born in Salem,
Massachusetts in 1804 (370). Hawthorne belonged to a family whose ancestral roots were tied to
Puritan history, with his family being among the first settlers of Massachusetts and having one of
his relatives serve as a judge during the Salem witch trials (370). Hawthorne, as a young boy, had
a particular interest in writings such as John Bunyan s Puritan allegory The Pilgrim s Progress, and
by his mid teens he took interest in British novelists such as Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollet,
William Godwin, and Sir Walter Scott

The purpose of the book review is to provide information on the different types of heart diseases
and their causes. There are many different heart diseases which some people are born with it and
most of them develop over the course of one s lifetime. Some of the most common heart diseases
are Coronary Artery Disease, Angina, Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Peripheral Arterial Disease
and Silent Ischemia. One of the most common heart diseases is Heart attack (Myocardial
Infarction), it is when a part of the heart muscle is damaged and blood flow is interrupted
causing a blockage. If the blockage is small enough it still will ultimately let blood flow but when
it s extremely damaged, it causes blockage and leads to a heart attack. Heart failure is another
mutual form of heart disease; it happens when the heart stops pumping blood to meet our bodies

The Hedge Fund Of Hedge Funds
Hedge funds are generally described as being private investment vehicles for wealthy, private and
secluded investors, prearranged with limited partnership. Partners of most hedge funds dedicate
their personal wealth into the fund to ensure personal interest and dedication to the fund. This
hedge fund structure continues to be a dominant organizational setup in the financial industry.
Albert Wislow Jones is known as the father of hedge funds, creating the first one in 1949 that
used what is known as short long equity strategies and leverage to thrive in the economic world.
He initially raised $100,000 for the fund and $40,000 came out of his own pocket. By short selling

Robertson s strategy was to place high bets on the most promising stocks and short sell what he
thought as the worst possible stocks to invest in. Unfortunately, the ratio between the yen and
USD began to strengthen and Tiger Management was struggling, losing investors quickly. At the
end of the reign of Tiger Management, it was down to only $8 billion in management. After Tiger
had been shut down, all of the traders Robertson had trained went to major hedge funds. Robertson

However, there is a more important hedge fund that almost caused the entire financial system to

8 Thresholds In Big History
In the Big History, there are 8 thresholds; in Genesis 1 there are 7 days. The similarities between
the thresholds and days of creation have similarities literally and metaphorically. The Big Bang,
the emergence of matter forming planets and life; the first day, the creation of heaven and earth.
Just like the Big Bang, the first day created the ability for life to emerge. The stars light up, the
second day, Godcreated light. Although the light God created on the second day is metaphorically
goodness, He created light. Before light, earthwas a void, no form, engulfed by darkness. God brings
light. Then He brings day and night, but without stars and the sun; this is when the creation story
becomes separated from the Big History. God then created oceans and land, and then plants and
trees; God creates these things before the sun and stars.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
What if the day and night is the separation between good and evil. History shows that humans
measure their days and nights based on the sun. If there was no sun, what kind of day and night
was it? Were these beginnings days and nights, God s time and not the human measured time?
God continues, He then creates the sun and the stars; the formation of new elements and a solar
system. God then created fish and birds, animals that live in the sea and animals that fly above
land; the creation story is thus relinked to Big History. God continues to create more organisms
and animals. Then on the sixth day, man and woman were created. In the creation story, there is
not days that show the emergence of agriculture or industrial ideas. God rests on the seventh day.
The seventh day can be seen as the future, but I like to think the seventh day is when collective
learning emerges and that there is will be always be an invisible eighth day. The eighth day would

Power Of Rightwing Groups
With Donald Trump s election into the White House, the rightwing of American politics gained
power like they ve never had before. As their power progresses, it is incredibly important that both
Democrats and Moderate Republicans devise a strategy to hinder the spread of these ideas and
limit their power. The most important ways in which these individuals should resist the growing
influence of these rightwing groups include: focusing less on social issues and more on economic

Not only will this process take legitimacy away from the Democrats in the long run, but it will
also only cause the rightwing to go further to the right. The only way to successfully oppose the
rightwing movement is to remain as logical and level headed as is possible. This is
demonstrated in Claire Conner s experiences with the John Birch Society. While the society was
incredibly powerful at one time, they eventually began to collapse once they went after
prominent leaders. Many soon saw them as radical and un logical. As we let the rightwing
movements spiral more and more out of control, anyone who is even close to moderate will leave
them, thus weakening their power. Providing those whose opinions begin to dissent from this
group an alternative is vital to opposing them. Another reason why it is so important to shy away
from radical behavior and ideas is that it will make other liberal arguments weaker. It will be near
impossible to convince rightwing supporters that their leaders are using coded racial appeals when
they have already written us off. One argument that has pushed liberals further away from logically
discussion and further toward extremist emotional appeals is the, Trump is just like Hitler saying.

SNAP Participation Rates
Empirical research on SNAP caseloads have examined macroeconomics, individual household
characteristics, as well as national, state, and local policies and how they affect SNAP
participation rates. Several researchers have found that individual or household characteristics
play an important role in the SNAP participation rates (Acs Schwabish, 2011; Bhattarai, Duffy,
Raymond, 2005; Grieger Danziger 2011; Gundersen Oliveira, 2001; Rank Hirschl, 2005). Some
have used the life table technique, often employed by demographers, to estimate likelihood of
SNAP participation through the life cycle. Rank and Hirschl (2005) found that just over half of
individuals between the ages of 20 and 65 will at one point receive SNAP, and most often SNAP...

Research has found that SNAP participants often participate in other public assistance programs
(Cody, et al., 2007; Moffit, 2015). Literature has also shown that individual work status of prime
age adults is related to SNAP participation; prime age adults with children or who participate in
other assistance program that also participate in SNAP often are working low income
households (Zedlewski Rader, 2005). Acs and Schwabish (2011) examine the relationship
between SNAP participation and work status given national level policy changes to the SNAP
program in the Food Security and Rural Investment Act of 2002. They find after 2002 fewer
individuals left the program overall and this effect was not limited to long term recipients.
Suggesting the changes in SNAP policy encouraged more recipients to seek work and still
receive SNAP and did not necessarily increase the number of working households to newly join
SNAP. Between 2002 and 2007 SNAP participation among low income families whom work grew

The Cycles of International Conflict
Wars have been waged for decades creating the world we live in today. Charles Tilly observed,
the state made war and war made the state (qtd in Sernau, 2009, 147). However, these battles have
been destructive and bloody resulting in the deaths of countless individuals. These grave
consequences lead us to ask the ever problematic question, what could possibly motivate a state to
engage in warfare? Fundamentally, some believe waris linked to a conflict of political and economic
interests rooted in power struggles ranging from territorial and humanitarian to ideological and
ethnic while others argue that war has become ingrained in our societies and economies resulting in
this tenacious cycle of confrontation. Territories are the bases... Show more content on

Some of these countries include Korea, Vietnam and Cuba (Kent, 2006). An additional factor of
international conflict has to deal with ethnic and cultural disputes. Goldstein and Pevehouse believe
it is the most one of the most important sources of conflicts in today s world (Goldstein and
Pevehouse, 2009, 127). Samuel Huntington is a firm believer that international conflict is
becoming closely linked to ethnicity which he outlines in his clash of civilizations theory.
Huntington divides the world into eight major civilization outlined as Western, Confucian,
Japanese, Islamic, Hindu, Slavic Orthodox, Latin American and African (Huntington, 1993). He
then goes on to add that As people define their identity in ethnic and religious terms, they are likely
to see an us versus them relation existing between themselves and people of different ethnicity or
religion which leads to the clashes of civilizations (Huntington, 1993).
A big factor in ethnic conflict is often territorial and linked to self determination. As Goldstein and
Pevehouse point out, ethnic groups have strong aspirations and nationalist sentiments for statehood
(Goldstein and Pevehouse, 2009, 127). The Kurds are a relevant and current example of an ethnic
group seeking to establish a homeland, Kurdistan. However, they are

Top 5 Strengths
After going through the list of Values Principles, I have realized my top 5 strengths are:
Acceptance, Individualism, Non Judgementalism, Objectivity, and Confidentiality. Even though
these may be some of my strengths, there are also some weaknesses along with this. One may
excel at something very well, but at the same time, there is always room for improvement.
One of the first Values Principles I believe is a strength of mine is Acceptance. I have always been
very accepting of others, whether it is accepting their culture and beliefs, or their sexuality. I feel as
though accepting others is a huge strength and will help in my counseling career/techniques. There

I am able to set aside my beliefs and not make bias decisions. This is something I truly believe in
but at the same time, I do believe that this is a value I need to work on. When I know that
someone is making a decision, and it is not the right choice, I need to know not to give them my
opinion or advice. Sometimes I need to bite my tongue when I know the choice will not benefit
the person at all. It gets extremely difficult when working with the youth because I know if they go
out and make the same mistake over again, they will just come right back complaining or in tears.
It does get hard to just sit them down and tell them like it is and tell them not to do something.
Last but not least, I know confidentiality is a value and principle that I choose to use everyday. I
feel it is extremely important in the world of counseling, and almost every career out there. When
somebody comes to you and wants to talk, they should feel safe to tell you anything knowing that
it will not leave that room. If you are not able to keep what they disclose to you confidential, they
will not feel comfortable to continue telling you things. It gives the clients a peace of mind

Practicing High Frequency And Sight Words
Practicing high frequency and sight words are effective teaching strategies that can deepen and
extend student early literacy development. However, it is vital to understand that although many
high frequency words are also sight words, there is a difference. Sight words are typically words
that students recognize immediately (within three seconds) and can read without having to use
decoding skills. Ultimately, practicing such words would help students become confident and fluent
readers as they would begin recognizing words by sight. On the other hand, high frequency words
are words that are commonly found in the English language. First, I would begin introducing and
teaching the words to K 3 students only a few weeks after the schoolyear

Jewish Divorce Essay
Although changes have been made to Jewish divorce laws, women are continually being
mistreated when dealing with the issues of divorce. In biblical times, there were no assurances that
women would be protected when faced with a man who wanted a divorce. Furthermore, women
were not allowed to initiate the process by asking for one. As time went on, it was recognized that
women needed to be somewhat shielded from actions that her husband could take, which she had
no control over. Rabbinic law made four major changes to help the plightof women regarding
divorce (Biale p.5).
First, the Halackah requires a Get (bill of divorcement), which limits the possibility of a rash,
thoughtless ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There have been many debates about this clause because the appropriate grounds for divorce are
unclear. Some believe that a man can divorce a woman merely because he likes another one better
(B. p.74). There is no safeguard against this because it is up to the man s judgment. The
requirements of the Ketubah and the Get may not convince the man to stay married.
The fact remains that on the one hand; a wife could not initiate a divorce without appealing to a
Beit Din, and on the other hand may be divorced without her consent. The Talmud states A woman
may be divorced with her consent or without it (B. 81). Rabbenu Gershom made a ruling that
banned the divorcement of a woman without her consent. Although this is a positive legislation, a
Beit Din has the power to revoke it when they deem necessary.
The most problematic law is that while it is not always necessary for a woman to consent to a
divorce, a man can give a divorce with only his full consent (Yevamot 112b) (B. 97). It is then up
to the courts and the community to try to convince him to give his wife a divorce. Many women
have faced this problem of being an Agunah (anchored wife), chained to her husband until he
agrees to a divorce. This problem is even more apparent today while religious morals do not
always prevail over greedy husbands who wish to bribe their wives for monetary gains. There are
too many cases that show husbands refusing

Philosophy of Literacy Instruction
Literacy Defined
Literacy embraces reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Integrating all of these into a literacy
program is key. Teachers must provide endless and ongoing opportunities for their student to read,
write, listen, and speak.
There are many components that make up literacy. In order to effectively teach students these
components the teacher must model the concept for the students. As teachers, we can t expect or
assume that the student already knows what we expect of them. Modeling gives students a basis of
what to go by. Modeling is the first and most important step in order for the students to gain mastery
of a concept. A teacher must also undergo guided practice with the students. A teacher should always

For every area of development that I need to address with a student I will make sure that I have at
least two positives to go along with it. This will not bring a child down.
Another important part of my literacy program will be communication with home. I will send home
newsletters and have school meetings where the parents are invited to attend. I will always keep the
parents/guardians informed on everything we are doing in class. I will send home praise notes
rather than just negative notes on students.
In my classroom I will have a specific outline as to what a literacy lesson will look like. Each lesson
will focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening. I will have a set behavior management plan
that will be followed at all times. I will always introduce a lesson by activating prior knowledge,
motivating the student, and by stating the objectives. I will always model for the students what it is
that they are expected to do. The students will always undergo guided practice before they set off
on their own to do something. Then when I am sure that the students understand I will have them
independently practice. Once the concept is mastered I will assess each student to be sure that they
can apply what they have learned.
When my students pick up a book they will automatically know what to do. I will teach the
students to always predict before they read. I will have the students look at the title and the picture

Dante s Inferno Essay
Dante s Inferno
It was sometime in the middle of the 17th century that British cleric Thomas Fuller wrote, He that
falls into sin is a man; that grieves at it, is a saint; that boasteth of it, is a devil. If Fuller was right,
where does one place Dante, the pilgrim who bravely wandered where no man had wandered
before? Certainly, the sojourner precisely written by the poet of the same name was a man.
Certainly, also, he repented his sinful ways (how could one not after braving not only the depths of
Hell but later the stretches of Purgatory and the many waters of Heaven?), but he was no saint.
Indeed, Inferno itself can be easily construed as a boast of sorts made it through hell, met Lucifer,
bought the t shirt. But in reality, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In Canto 3, Dante is so overwhelmed by his surroundings that overcame all feeling in me [ln
135] and he faints, saying dramatically, I fell like one whom sleep is taking [ln 136]. Not much
later, in Canto 5, the traveling duo comes upon a pair of lovers, condemned to an eternity of
suffering due to a small case of incontinence. Dante is overcome with sympathy as he listens to
their story, and promptly blacks out again, this time with even more dramatic flair: for pity I
fainted as if I were dying, and I fell as a dead body falls [ln 141 142]. Before he hits the dust, he
manages to express his sympathy to Francesca, one of the lovers: Francesca, your sufferings make
me sad and piteous to tears [ln 116 117].
This sense of pity is an important indicator of his progress, or lack thereof, through Hell. At this, the
beginning of his journey, Dante identifies with the condemned and thus has not only sympathy, but
empathy toward them. He understands a life of sin and can picture himself in their place. As time
goes by and the pilgrim s journey continues, Dante gets hardened against the strife and pain
inflicted upon the sinners. Of course, seeing enough of anything begets tolerance, but in Dante s
case his lessening sympathy shows lessening empathy as well. His thoughts and ideals have
become progressively more pure and pious, and he s started to lose his identification with the life of
sin and contempt. Virgil encourages his displacement

Opposing Viewpoints
There is no doubt that people s viewpoints has played a pivotal role in all societies. The desire for
express the opinion lies deep within the human sprite. No one can deny direct and indirect influence
of viewpoint on relationships between people in whole society. However, this issue has recently
engendered many controversies among academicians. Some people may hold this viewpoint that if
we can t say anything nice about someone, then we should not say anything about this person.
However, others have an opposite perspective and believe that we should say both nice and bad
things about other people. Nevertheless, many remain neutral, sharing the view that a myriad of
factors should be taken into consideration so as to be able to prove which belief is closer to the
reality. I am of the opinion that the positive viewpoint about someone seems more valuable for
people than negative viewpoints about them; not only does it make to find and keep strong
relationships, but also it is more impressive. In the following paragraphs, I will try to pinpoint the
most important reasons.

issue that people maybe don t like that people talk behind them back. This means that it is an

Essay about History of Home Schooling
History of Home Schooling
Before public schools emerged, children were educated in the home by their parents. They were
taught arithmetic, practical skills, and to read and write. Some wealthy families preferred hiring a
tutor for their children (Koetzsch, 1997). In the 1840s, prominent leaders such as Horace Mann lead
a movement to institute public schools in the United States (Thattai, 2001). These reformers argued
that public schools would create good citizens, unite society, and prevent crime and poverty. As a
result of their efforts, public elementary schools evolved in American society by the end of the 19th
century. Massachusetts was the first state to pass a compulsory attendance law, ruling that all

Many parents followed Holt in his ideas about education and still home school their children based
on Holt s philosophy (Koetzsch, 1997).
The Christian home school movement began in the United States during the 1980 s. Conservative
Christian families believe in a literal translation of the bible and generally have conservative social
views. Public schools and American society are a threat to their beliefs and values. Conservative
Christians believe that public schools are anti religious, dominated by materialism, plagued by
violence, full of sexual promiscuity, and plagued by drug use. Approximately 80 percent of home
schooled children are Conservative Christians (Koetzsch, 1997). By the late 1980 s, many parents
were turning to home schooling as an alternate form of education. By 1998, all fifty states had laws
allowing home schooling (Koetzsch, 1997).
Advantages and Disadvantages to Home Schooling
There are many reasons why parents decide to home school their children. Home schoolers can be
divided into two main groups, ideologues and pedagogues. Ideologues home school their children
for religious purposes. Pedagogues home school because they believe they can teach their children
better than public or private institutions (Thomas, 1998). Parents decide to home school due to
religious reasons because parents have

Human Nature In Shakespeare s Hamlet
To, be or not to be, is one of William Shakespeare s most notable inquiries regarding the self in the
tragedy Hamlet (3.1.56). Hamlet is one of Shakespeare s most complicated characters, in that the
audience is able to view Hamlet s internal struggle. By orchestrating chaos, Shakespeare creates an
environment in which the male characters; Hamletand Claudius, are free to contemplate and express
their respective nature. However, when it comes to Gertrude; Hamlet s mother and initial instigator
of Hamlet s conflict, there is no interior examination. There is only recognition of her sexuality, and
the chaos that ensues from her decision to lay with Claudius. So why does someone so interested in

84). Already the concept of human nature alludes to a hierarchy. Those of a wealthier status are
more capable of attainting culture, and therefore able to cultivate their nature. This may be one of
the reasons why women, who were seen as imperfect men, did not have the freedom to explore
their interiority (Marquis 1257). Women were not made in the image of God, but rather: she is the
image of man in a restrictive and analogical sense, because woman was made from man, after man,
inferior to him and his likeness (Farber). Women were by design lower in the hierarchy. Not only
did the Renaissance now contemplate the self, but they also found celebration of the self. Cultural
historian, Jacob Burckhardt, argues that: In the Middle Ages, man was conscious of himself only
as a member of a race, people, party, family or corporation only through some general category
(Burke 193). During the Renaissance, however: ...this veil first melted into air...man became a
spiritual individual, and recognized himself as such (193). Man could now be a spiritual individual
outside of the theological realm because of this humanist movement of the Renaissance. This idea
was simplified by the Renaissance Italian philosopher, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola, in his work
Oration on the Dignity of Man. He believed that

The American Education Essay
The American Education
Throughout the 20th and 21st centuries, the American educational system has undergone much
transition in response to our changing society. Though there have been many problems raised
throughout the years in regard to what our school systems should be teaching our children, there
have also been many developments.
In the final decades of the 20th century, education has continued to evolve in order to meet society
s demands. The transformation of society has created numerous problems in the educational
system. These problems consist of the segregation of races, religions, social classes, and politics. In
the earlier part of the 20th century, African Americans were segregated within schools. They were

(Examples: Driving taxicabs and cooking in restaurants ). This inflation occurred because the labor
force put such a high demand on education, but did not expand to accompany this high demand.
The inflation became problematic due to the fact that businesses were donating privately funded
money to the educational institutions rather than the citizens in the communities with higher taxes.
Toward the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, the American education
system has continued to evolve with some new curricular modifications. In 1992, the ?Children of
the Rainbow? curriculum was introduced in New York. This revolutionary curriculum required
elementary schools to teach tolerance towards gays and lesbians. Other new curricula proposals
centered around sexual education, which intended for schools to teach about family values,
abstinence, and sexually transmitted diseases, and methods of family planning. Another major
issue that the American school system was dealing with was nutrition and eating habits of youth. In
2002 the U.S congress passed the ?Obesity and Prevention Treatment Act?, to improve the eating
habits in the nation , where more than 60 percent of Americans are overweight.
Economic concerns and issues continue to plague the education system throughout the United
States. The ?Head Start? program has been established to provide early childhood education to give
economically disadvantaged children early

Discourse Analysis In Carl Sanburg s Grass
When analyzing a poem, it is important to understand the language that is being used. When
applying discourse theory to a poem, it is important to analyze the language beyond the sentence
itself. Discourse analysis studies the natural use of language, rather than the invented examples. The
main objective of discourse analysis is to create a better understanding of how language is used
through textual features and what effects it has on that investment. Texts often require these
features that enables the reader to understand the motivation of that author. In his poem, Grass, Carl
Sanburg utilizes verbs, proper nouns, and nouns to efficiently erase the signs of the past. In the
poem, Grass, the author uses many linguistic features throughout the poem, verbs being one of
them. Verbs are defined as words that are used to describe an action or a state, forming the main
objective of the sentence. Sanburg uses verbs consistently throughout his poem to describe the
actions in the poem. The first sentence of the poem states, Pile the bodies high at Austerlitz and
Waterloo (Sanburg). He uses the wordpile, which can be inferred as a nounor a verb, which in this
sentence is used as a verb. The verb pile can infer two different meanings, one defined as placing
things one on top of another whereas the second meaning defines the entry of a large group in a
disorganized manner. The application of this word symbolizes the insignificant importance of these

Price Elasticity of Demand and Supply
Q. Discuss how a supplier of a product that is currently fashionable might use both of these concepts
in making price and output decisions.
Price Elasticity of Demand
The price elasticity of demand measures the sensitivity of the quantity demanded to price. The
price elasticity of demand is the percentage change in quantity demanded brought by a 1 percent
change in price. The value of price elasticity of demand for a normal good must always be negative,
reflecting the fact that demand curves slope downward because of the inverse relationship of price
and quantity.
The price elasticity of demand can be an extremely useful piece of information for business firms,
nonprofit institutions, and other organizations that are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The price elasticity of supply tells us the percentage change in quantity supplied for each percent
change in price. The value of price elasticity of supply for a normal good must always be positive,
reflecting the fact that supply curves slope upward because of the positive relationship of price and
quantity.
Similarly as price elasticity of demand, price elasticity of supply can be also an extremely useful
piece of information for business firms in deciding how much to produce their products. To see
why a business might care about the price elasticity of supply, let s consider how an increase in
price might affect a business s total revenue. Since price and quantity have a positive
relationship in price elasticity of supply, a higher price will generally mean producing at a
higher quantity, so the total revenue will increase. Economists have classified the possible
range of values for price elasticity of supply as Inelastic Supply, Unitary Elastic Supply, and
Elastic Supply . In the process of helping a supplier of a product that is currently fashionable to
decide output decision, we must first identify the classification that the product is in right now as
being fashionable . As mentioned earlier, the price elasticity of supply is used to see how
sensitive the supply of a good is to a price change. The higher the price elasticity, the more
sensitive producers and sellers are to price changes. A very high price elasticity suggests

Essay on America and the Great Depression
America and the Great Depression
1. Compare the ideas behind the protest movements of Huey Long and Upton Sinclair.
The Era of the Great Depression was one of both desperation and hope. Americans were desperate
for a change, desperate for anything to come along that may improve their situation, yet hopeful that
the light at the end of the tunnel was near. For many of those living in poverty during the 1930s, the
radical leftist movements seen throughout the country appeared to be alternatives to the sometimes
ineffective programs of FDR s New Deal. Two such programs, Huey Long s Share Our Wealth plan
and Upton Sinclair s End Poverty in California (EPIC) were fairly popular, mainly for their
appealing alternatives to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Long s program became quite popular nationally, at one point the Share Our Wealth Society
claimed to have nearly 4.7 million members. Such support only fueled Long s fire, aspirations for
the 1936 presidency. The threat Long presented to the Democrat s reign in congress was legitimate.
At one time, President Roosevelt named Long one of the two most dangerous men in America .
(Biles 123) Though his assassination in 1935 removed the threat of his possible candidacy, the
strong support and influence of his followers caused the Roosevelt administration to move slightly
more to the left.
Upton Sinclair, a former socialist and founder of the EPIC plan, registered with the Democratic
party in 1933 so he could run as a major party candidate in the 1934 California election for
governor. (Polenberg 120) Though he lost the election, EPIC supporters succeeded in gaining 30
seats in California legislature, which ultimately pushed the state governor to endorse New Deal
programs. (Biles 120) Sinclair, well known for a number of books he wrote (which often attacked
the evils of a capitalistic society ), based his EPIC plan on the idea of creating an economy based
on use rather than on profit. (Polenberg 120)
EPIC called for the seizure of idle land in California and its transformation into a network of
cooperatives to be run and managed by those without jobs. These colonies would be given land to
cultivate, as well as factories and production plants to work

Student Loan Vs. Private Loan
In order to get ahead in today s society people must take a risk. That risk may include taking out
student loans in order to acquire the necessary degree for their wanted job. For some taking out
student loans in the only way to achieve their goal of going to college. There are many different
types of student loans that a person could qualify for, for example, a federal loanor private loan. No
matter what type of loan is being offered before someone should accept any type of loan and the
responsibilities that come along with it they should consider the positives and negative
repercussions that could occur. Often times people hear many negative things about student
loans but there are a few positive things about them. A student loan allows someone to attend
college and further their education which gives them benefits that they will be able to use later
in life. The main benefit and reason individuals go to college is to reach the goal of a higher
education, greater employment opportunities and solid earnings and student loans make that
possible (Venable 2). It could also be a positive thing depending on the amount a person borrows
and terms they agree to pay it back. Having student loans that are possible to make regular
payments on is an opportunity to increase a person s credit score allowing better financial
opportunities, for example, being able to acquire a car loan, business loan, or mortgage (Venable

A Girl Like Me Alternate Ending
A Girl Like Me Prologue You know that moment when you realize just how most guys look at
you. For most girls, you know the gorgeous ones, guys are a dime a dozen and you just know
they like you. Hmph for girls like me it s the quite opposite, I have no clue why a guy would be
talking to me and why he would stay to talk, well I used to not know. Eventually I figured it out;
reality had come crashing down on my ugly pathetic world. Top two reasons a guy would ask for
my number were either for information on my hot friend, or sex, just sex. I eventually picked up
the signs that the guy was just going for sex pretty slow. I mean once it took three months after
kind of hooking up with a guy to figure out he just saw me as an easy loser slut.... Show more

Theme Of Chinese Cinderella
On Google.com the word significant refers to something that is sufficiently great or important to be
worthy of attention; noteworthy. For something to have a significant impact on someone, it must be
meaningful, relevant, and important. As stated by Thomas Hardy, A story must be exceptional
enough to justify its telling; it must have something more unusual to relate than the ordinary
experience of every average man and woman. It must have something meaningful, something that
pulls a reader in so that the audience can laugh when the character laughs or cry when the character
cries. It must be significant. A story that fits the definition of significant is one by Adeline Yen Mah
.
In the novel Chinese Cinderella: The True Story of an Unwanted Daughter, Adeline Yen Mah pulls
the reader in by using the themes of loneliness and acceptance something that is faced by nearly all
at some point in their life. What makes Yen Jun ling s story so engaging are the emotions as well as
the obstacles she went though. The circumstances she faced, even though not to the same extent,
can be somewhat relatable. The feeling of loneliness, for instance, is an emotion that numerous
people face at least once in their life. Jun Ling was always treated as the outsider the unwanted
child, a burden to her family. At school she had friends, but she was never allowed to meet up and
play with them and when she came home it was as if she didn t exist. When she was given a little

Equal Rights for Same-Sex Couples Essays
Imagine being in love with someone, but never having the ability to make the relationship official.
For many same sex couples across the United States of America this is a reality. Even though great
strides have been made in the advancement of gay rights, homosexual couples still face opposition
from the Federal Government by being denied the right to a marriage. Same sex marriages should be
constitutionalized. While the Federal Government denies gay and lesbian couples the right to
marry, there are some state governments which allow same sex couples the right to domestic
partnerships, civil unions, and marriages. Comparing marriage to civil unions and domestic
partnerships is a bit like comparing diamonds to rhinestones (Human... Show more content on

These states which grant domestic partnerships and the states mentioned above which allow
civil unions are in the beginning stages of trying to rectify the Federal Government s Defense of
Marriage Act. Currently six states and one territory issue marriage licenses to gay and lesbian
couples. These states are Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, and
Vermont plus the District of Columbia (Human Rights Campaign). Though these states and
Washington, D.C. allow gay marriage, these couples still do not have the same rights and
benefits as heterosexual couples. There are many financial benefits received from a marriage
which make it appealing to same sex couples. These rights and federal tax benefits are given to
married heterosexual couples, but homosexual couples do not receive them. Such benefits
include the couple filing for joint tax returns and inheriting money or property from his or her
spouse without paying tax (Zajac, Koova, and Rocks 29). Due to the Defense of Marriage Act
(DOMA), which states marriage as being a legal coming together of husband and wife (Zajac,
Koova, and Rocks 29), marriages for same sex couples are deemed unconstitutional. This means
that even though a state may approve and allow a gay couple to be married , the Federal
Government prohibits it. Gay and Lesbian couples along with many gay rights activists strongly
oppose the Defense Of Marriage Act. Even the Obama administration,

Thomas Jefferson Report
Biography of Thomas Jefferson
Third President of the United States of America.
Thomas Jefferson (1743 1826) was the third president of the United States and a creator of the
Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson was a philosopher, politician, scientist, architect,
inventor, musician, and writer. Thomas Jefferson was also one of the smartest leaders in history.
His father was named Peter Jefferson, a very rich Farmer from Virginia. Thomas s
Mother, Jane Randolph Jefferson, was part of the Randolph family. The Randolph Family was a
big part of Virginia history, and also very rich also. Peter and Jane Jefferson moved to Goochland
county, because Peter had just gotten 400 acres of land there.

The marriage was happy, except Mrs. Jefferson s ill health. Of their six children, only two, both of
them girls, lived to maturity. Martha Jefferson died in 1782. The death of his wife had a profound
effect on Jefferson and probably influenced his return to politics, which Thomas Jefferson had
considered leaving.
On June 21, 1775, Jefferson took his seat in Congress. The following summer, Jefferson sat in
Congress as an elected delegate, not as an alternate. It was at this session that Thomas Jefferson
wrote his most famous document, the Declaration of Independence. On July 4, 1776, the
Declaration of Independence was formally adopted. The connections with America with Great
Britain were broken. Within a few days the declaration was being read to people throughout the
colonies, and it was received with great pride.
Jefferson managed to spend considerable time with his family. Thomas took up building projects at
Monticello and continued to develop his land. Jefferson was a philosopher a architect, and an
inventor. Thomas invented the dumbwaiter, a swivel chair, a lamp heater, and an improved plow.
In May, 1784, Congress appointed Jefferson a diplomat. Jefferson was to go to France. There
Thomas Jefferson was to help the other ministers, Benjamin Franklin and John Adams, in arranging
commercial treaties with various European countries. When Franklin retired in 1785, Jefferson
replaced him as the U.S. diplomatic representative to
France. One of Jefferson s

History Of Geology Of Ethiopia
1.5 Review of Literatures
According to (EIGS, 2010); the geology of Ethiopia is characterized by different rock types
ranging in age from Precambrian to recent. These rocks are classified into three major geological
formations: Precambrian rocks, Paleozoic Mesozoic sedimentary rocks and Cenozoic volcanic
rocks and associated sediments. (Ebinger et al., 1993); Volcanic activity in the southern MER
started earlier than in the other MER sectors, since the oldest rocks were dated at about 45 Ma
(Amaro Gamo basalts). Such an initial, mainly basaltic activity ended around 30 Ma (Zanettin et
al., 1978).
According to Levitte et al., 1974) and Zanettin et al., 1978), a second phase of mainly basaltic
volcanism started in the early Miocene ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The most important geologic units are outlined below from the oldest to the youngest. The
lowermost unit corresponds to the Tertiary basaltic sequences that cover large areas of Ethiopia
and are comprehensively known as Plateau Flood basalts or Trap Series. These basalts represent
the first volcanic activity related to the Tertiary rifting in Ethiopia, although this volcanic phase
predates the main rifting events (Abebe et al., 2005; Bonini et al., 2005).
According (Zanettin et al., 1978), the alkaline basaltic lava flows are about 30 36 Ma in age and
crop out at the northern termination of the Chencha escarpment to mildly in the Soddo Arba Minch
areas. Damot Volcanois a large and complex silicic volcanic center; which rises over 1000 m from
the surrounding rift escarpment, locally overlies the Nazret pyroclastic rocks. The trachytic lava
flows from Damota are of Late Pliocene age (~2.9 Ma [Woldegabriel et al., 1990]).
Hobitcha is Quaternary volcanic centers which is main sources of pyroclastic material to this
ancestral lacustrine system, together with basaltic flows evident as hyloclastite layers in some
sections of this unit (Chernet, 2011). The earliest phase of rhyolitic volcanism in the Quaternary
was associated with the Hobitcha rhyolitic center, a U shaped caldera with a diameter of ~10 km
that exposes large volumes of lava and pyroclastic products on its flanks and caldera rim.

Michelle Obama Critique
Critique of Michelle Obama s Calls on You to Serve Speech By JULIET ANOSIKE COMM
1310 Elements of Human Communication Concorde Career College On June 19nd 2009 First
Lady Michelle Obama called on Americans to step up their self sacrifice on the 27th of June by
declaring the day a National Health Care Day of Service. In her two minutes speech, Michelle
officially kicked off United We Serve, a plea to all Americans to join a volunteer endeavor and be
part of constructing a new foundation for America, one society at a time (The Obama White House,
2009). The program was managed by the Corporation for National and Community Service, the
federal organization devoted to development service in communities across America. The
introduction of her speech immediately captures the audience attention. She refers from president
Obama s remarks on the challenges facing Americans. She then moves on to launch her idea on the
volunteerism program immediately outlining the efforts the government has put in place to help
address the economic challenges. Her language is clearly stated and she uses persuasive words to
convince the Americans (the audience) to join the initiative (Dlugan, 2008). She engaged the
audience s mind in the current state and provides best alternatives. She then states the need states
the need for intervention and calls for audience attention. However, Michelle does not develop
sufficient evidence to the real cause of the problems affecting the American.

America Is The Great Melting Pot
America is the great Melting Pot . From an early age every American is taught that America
contains a mixture of the world s cultures in a perfectly blended mixture. We honor and respect all
cultures and invite them to bring their customs here to the United States. But do we really? Take
for instance, the Hmong refugees who involuntarily moved to America. Cultural Assimilation
seemed to be forced down the refugees throats. Keeping their native customs was looked on with
horror and disgust.
Cultural Assimilation is the process in which a person s and or groups culture comes to resemble
that of another group. When most immigrants come to the Untied States they are heavily advised
to take up English as their first language. You are advised to learn all about our government, how
to drive, and the value of individualism. The idea of the Great Melting Pot is completely ironic to
me. It gives the impression that we are all one big mixture of cultures. In reality the melting pot
spreads thin all other cultures, but the American culture. Other cultures seem to be lost and
assimilated into American ideologies and cultures. Cultural Assimilation for refugees and others,
such as the Hmong can be incredibly difficult and life threatening. Take the Lee Family, for
example. The Lee family arrived in the United States on December 18th in 1980. They left their
country seeking political asylum and ended up in the U.S. They experiences first hand how

Torture In The Middle Ages
Torture is an action of severe physical or mental pain, or suffering for a purpose, such as
extraction of information, confessions, or for punishments. In the Middle Ages torture was used
for suffering and to punish captured enemies. It involved the usage of instruments to force
evidence from witnesses, criminals, and slaves and was only committed by a public official or
another person with similar authority. In ancient Greece and Rome, torture was lawfully used, it
was usually used on slaves to extract information or confessions. Later, in early medieval Europe,
torture was used as an ancient test of guilt or innocence by subjection of the person who was
accused to extreme pain(Rodley 1). Survival was taken as a proof of innocence, the suspect s
response to pain established guilt or innocence. But there were many methods used to torture
people. In medieval times punishments were often for crimes. The people who tortured witnesses,
criminals, and slaves, used methods like the rack, guillotine, mandatory bath, pillory and trial by

dislocated. But there was one other torture device that was popular, it was an instrument used for

upright beams is placed on a crossbeam, with a sharp edged knife, which was heavily weighted to

Grendel Philosophies
Philosophies are the ideas formed in one s mind, often about the world and the questions we have
about it. As humans, we often pick one philosophy and stick with it. How would a monster like the
character Grendel in the novel by John Gardner react to these philosophies? Throughout the novel,
Grendel experiences and is conflicted with many different philosophies. Influenced by characters
such as the Shaper, the Dragon, and the people of Hrothgar, Grendel experiences many philosophies
such as Nihilism, Solipsism, and Machiavellianism.
One of the major philosophies in the novel Grendel is Nihilism. Nihilism is the rejection of
moral and religious principles, and the belief that life is small and meaningless. In the first few
pages of the novel, John Gardner states that He cocks his head like an elderly, slow witted king,
considers his angles, decides to ignore me. I stamp. I hammer the ground with my fists. I hurl a
skull size stone at him. He will not budge. (Gardner, 5). Here is a snippet of Grendel s hatred
towards life and even nature. Throughout the novel, Grendel proves to the reader that he doesn t
really care about anybody except for himself. In this quote, Grendel sees a ram and tries to make
it leave, only to fail. The ram just stays where it is and ignores Grendel, even when Grendel yells
and throws a large rock at it. As John Gardner states, I understood that the world was nothing: a
mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes

Essay On Tommy And Mr. Atkins
A British soldier is expected to stand firm, with a non wavering heart as the enemy approaches.
They are to protect the Queen and her beliefs at all costs. A gentleman and a fighter, that is a
soldier of the Queen s army. They expect to return home to the people of the United Kingdom s
praise and respect after their conquests, however they were met with mistreatment and sometimes
scorn during the year of 1892. On the surface, Tommy is a representation of the juxtaposition of
how war is seen by those that are being protected, but this creative piece is an example of what it
is like when the people of a country respect the toils of war but not the soldier. Kipling

Chaucer The Pilgrim Essay
In The Personality of Chaucer the Pilgrim, John M. Major explores the qualities of Chaucer s
character in The Canterbury Tales. In the piece, Chaucer inserts himself into the story as one of
the pilgrims who make the trip to Canterbury, but the uses and characteristics of the character can
often appear conflicting and confusing. In his piece, Major closely examines the characteristics of
Chaucer s character and succeeds in making sense of exactly which approach Chaucer took in
creating his character and why he would do so. Major begins by examining the relationship
between the Chaucer who authored the piece and the Chaucer who exists as a character in the
piece and participates in the journey.Citing an older essay by E. Talbot Donaldson,... Show more

In the most interesting and insightful segment of the piece, Major states that, This Narrator
reveals himself to be, like his creator... witty, sophisticated... and, above all, ironic. Such a man is
very well aware of the significance of what he observes, though he may show his awareness by
subtly means (Major 160 161). Major stresses that it would take a considerably dense individual
to fail to realize that he made contradictions in admiring vastly different people. Such a person is
so far removed from Chaucer s own self that it is difficult to compare the two, and he wouldn t
even be fit to travel with the characters and record their tales with appropriate nuance and detail
anyway. Major concludes that the Narrator often made his comments and observations with
deliberate use of irony. This is most apparent in line 251 when Chaucer states that Ther nas no
man nowher so vertous (A 251) coming, as it does, in the midst of other lines that so obviously and
even heavily point up the Friar s greed and hypocrisy (Major 161). As Major argues, it would be
impossibly odd for the Narrator of all people to fail to see the faults in his companions. The major
new insight I took away from this article is derived from such an observation: Chaucer likely had
his Narrator employ the use of irony so as to create a persona that initially appeared to be dim and

  • 2. Mosaicattenuation Patterns 3) Mosaicattenuation pattern Mosaic attenuation refers to inhomogeneous attenuation seen at inspiratory CT. This pattern may represent patchy interstitial disease, small airways disease, or vascular disease. In patients with sarcoidosis, mosaic attenuation most often results from small airways involvement by granulomas or fibrosis, which may lead to obstruction .In pulmonary sarcoidosis, nodular thickening along of the airway (or bronchovascular bundle) from the lobar to subsegmental level is a common finding due to non caseating granulomas in bronchial mucosa. [21]To verify that the CT finding is caused by air trapping, a finding of mosaic attenuation on inspiratory images must be compared with the parenchymal appearance on expiratory images.[18] ... • 3. Inherit The Wind, By Charles Darwin Every living thing on this planet has evolved from the same original specie. Having this information, could it not be concluded that all living things are, to some degree, related? Yes. To further explain, evolution is a theory that states that organisms have diversified or in other words, have changed into a more complex living thing. In the book Inherit The Wind, the townsfolk of the play disagree heavily with the theory of evolution. Common ancestry is the theory that states that all living things share a common ancestor or common descendent, which then ties into evolution. Speciation, both allopatric and parapatric, show evidence for common ancestry. Speciation is when new species arise due to an evolutionary process. There are multiple and observable accounts that are used to support the theory of common ancestry. Charles Darwins book, The Descent of Man And Selection in Relation to Sex, goes into specifics with these accounts with placental mammals. Placental mammals are mammals that nourish their embryos using the mother s blood supply. Common Ancestry in placental mammals provides sufficient scientific evidence, such as the similarities in bone structures and genetic coding between animals, to support the theory of evolution. One of the biggest arguments against the theory of evolution and the theory of common ancestry is that they are theories. A scientific theory is an explanation for something in the natural world supported by facts and has successfully gone ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Legally Blonde Was Released, Telling The Story Of Elle Woods Fourteen years ago, the romantic comedy Legally Blonde was released, telling the story of Elle Woods, a ditzy sorority girl who follows her ex boyfriend, Warner, to Harvard Law School in hopes of proving to him that she is not just another dumb blonde and winning him back. Elle studies hard, forgets about Warner, and ends up graduating as valedictorian with job offers from multiple prestigious law firms. While making audiences laugh, the movie also inspired those who were undervalued and doubted by others to go to college, with the message that if they studied and worked hard enough, anything is possible. However, regardless of work ethic and intelligence, this aspiration is impossible for most. Even if one is accepted into their dream university, there is still the underlying issue of how they will pay for their education. For many, college is an important step in achieving success, but paying for a high quality college education is impossible. Even for those who find a way to pay, their chances of success are sabotaged by the price of their degree, despite the importance of a college education. Although in the twenty first century there is significant emphasis on the necessity of a college degree, qualified students are prevented from reaching their full potential because of the rising cost of a college education. College prices are rapidly rising; public four year college tuitions are rising at an average of 5.6% every year, while public two year college tuitions are ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The energy I would use to fuel my city is hydroelectric because its pros and cons outweigh the pros and cons of solar, coal, wind, and nuclear energy. The most efficient energy source for my city is hydroelectric energy. Hydroelectric energy is the most efficient for many reasons. Hydroelectric energy s power fuel is water, which does not give off harmful chemicals or waste in the air or water; keeping our planet very clean. Hydroelectric energy also has constant power. Its power is generated by moving water. Water is constantly moving. After hydroelectric plants are produced their energy can produce electricity very cheaply. Hydroelectric plants can... Solar panels still gives off pollution produced as a result of manufacturing, transportation, and installation. The production of energy is rather noisy from the use of fuels. Solar energy can only be used during daylight hours. Bad weather can decrease the efficiency of solar energy. Modern solar panels are only around 20% efficient. The initial investment of solar cells is extremely high. Solar energy has too many cons to be the best possible source of energy. Coal is also a very destructive source of energy, and is definitely not the supreme source. Coal is a non renewable resource. Coal creates the most CO2 in the environment. This destroys the ozone layer and leads to many climate problems. CO2 is toxic at concentrations above 5 percent. Coal is also the largest contributor to global warning. Coal causes mass destruction of the environment around coal mines. Coal mining is the 2nd highest emitter of methane, a potent greenhouse gas. Coal mining has high levels of radiation. • 8. Outsiders In The Outsider Things are rough all over. (Hinton 35) Ponyboy Curtis says this in the book The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. An outsider is someone who is different or doesn t fit in in a certain way, which is why Hinton never emphasizes who the outsiders are; readers can interpret this book and the outsiders in their own way because Hinton proves that everyone is an outsider in their own manner. While it can be argued that every character is an outsider, the main outsiders in this book are Ponyboy Curtis, Johnny Cade, and Cherry Valance. In a neighborhood of Greasers and Socs, Ponyboy Curtis is a part of a gang on the greaser side. This gang consists of Ponyboy, obviously, Johnny Johnnycake Cade, Darrel Darry Curtis, Sodapop Curtis, Keith Two Bit Mathews, Dallas Dally Winston, and Steve Randle. Although they re all bonded by their grease, Ponyboy does not completely fit in with the rest. [Ponyboy] liked [his] books and clouds and sunsets. (Hinton 148) Johnny comes to this realization and says this because he doesn t believe in fighting. He sees no reason in it and definitely does not find joy in it like the rest of the greasers. The average greaser finds happiness in violence and dirtiness, (as Cherry Valance, a Soc, says) but Johnny Cade is able to find comfort in cleaner, gentler things, such as sunsets, poems, and reading. One of the main moments where Johnny shows this is when he talks about a sunset and says, The mist was what was pretty...All gold and silver. (Hinton 66). He is very quiet and preserved, which is why the gang treats him as the pet. • 9. Review of 12 Angry Men In Twelve Angry Men, the prosecution and the defense have rested and the jury is filing into the jury room to decide if a young Spanish American boy is innocent or guilty of murdering his father. What starts out as an open and shut case of murder becomes instead a mini drama of each of the jurors lives, preconceptions and prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused and ultimately, each other. Based on the stage play, all of the film s action takes place in the juryroom. On the surface, the case appears to be open and shut due to several facts: 1) The defendant possess only a weak alibi 2) a knife the boy claimed to have lost is then found at the murder scene by the police 3) several witnesses claimed to have been heard screaming, observed the killing or the boy running from the scene. In the beginning, 11 of the jurors immediately vote guilty with only Juror No. 8 casting a not guilty vote. At first the juror(Mr. Davis) bases the vote more for the sake of discussion. The jurors in the room must believe beyond a reasonable doubt that the boy defendant is guilty of murdering his father. As the jury s deliberations unfold, the story quickly becomes an intimate study of the jurors very complex personalities. These personalities range from the wise, bright and empathetic to the arrogant or prejudiced and even merciless. This provides the immediate backdrop to Mr. Davis attempts to convince the other jurors that a not guilty verdict might be appropriate ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Fascism In Germany Fascism succeeded in Germany, not as a result of Hitler being elected. There were many factors that lead Hitler and the Nazi party to succeed. Hitler took advantage of situations such as the Great Depression and the Reichstag fire to help the Nazi Party gain support and obtain power of Germany. Along with taking advantage of those factors Hitler was able to convince the members of Reichstag to pass the Enabling Act. Another way Hitler was able to gain more support was by rewarding the people of Germanywith organizations such as the Gleichstang and strength through joy. The Great Depression of 1929 impacted Germany tremendously. Already gone through the Hyperinflation of 1923, the struggling Germany economy was facing another challenge. Many Germans encountered unemployment along with German farmers facing the threat of price declines of commodities and also the declining of markets. With many Germans facing unemployment this meant they were not able to earn money so it was difficult to get food or other necessities. This economic hardship gave Hitler the opportunity to reach out to the people of Germany who were outraged and worried about their future. So, this economic tragedy brought new supporters, voters, activists to the Nazi Party, which led them to gain more popularity. With more support and popularity, the Nazi Party kept on growing and becoming more powerful. In January 1933 Hitler was designated as Chancellor. He did not have much power at the beginning of ... • 11. Simpson Evenness The results show that Manuel Antonio has the highest Simpson s Index of Diversity with a .92. I believe that these results are miss leading. The Simpson s Index of Diversity takes into account both species richness and evenness. Richness is defined as the number of species per sample and evenness is defined as a measure of the relative abundance of the different speciesmaking up the richness of an area (Country Side Info). Manuel Antonio was very even, all of the plantspecies in the area had one or two individuals. The other samples that I took all had at least one species that was much more prevalent than the others. Due to evenness being a main factor in the Simpson s Diversity of Index is why according to this formula Manuel Antonio... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first drawback is we do not know the names of the plants. If we knew the names of the plants or at least what families they are in we could gain a lot more from our research. Secondly, how we counted the moss may lead to incorrect results. We counted the plants by number but originally we just wrote down, for example, one patch of moss. We then had to go back and assign it a number based on the percent of area we thought the moss was covering. Thirdly, our sample sizes were small. If they were larger we would have had a bigger picture of the biodiversity in the area. For example, in Monteverde if we had a larger sample size it may have reached to where the plants were denser farther off the trail. This would lead to Monteverde having a higher Simpson Index of Diversity. Lastly, there is always human bias. I chose my spots and many things influenced where I chose such as quantity of plants and how pretty the plants were. If I had to do this experiment over again I would use larger sample sizes so I could get a better idea of the biodiversity. I would also want to fix the way we accounted for moss. • 12. Analysis Of The Hurt Locker The statement, The Hurt Locker is one of the greatest war films ever made is a loaded comment that forces the viewer to consider several things. First, it requires the viewer to identify what makes a good war film: is it the action, the heroism, the filming technique, sound effect etc.? All these things are important to consider when determining the quality of a war movie. I argue that The Hurt Lockeris one of the greatest war films ever made because the film reveals war s brutal side, how it removes the mundane, and its destruction of innocence, while also portraying a realistic hero that one could hope to emulate. The first reason The Hurt Locker should be considered great is because of its accurate portrayal about the horrors of war. Chris Hedges repeatedly states, [War] is peddled by mythmakers historians, war correspondents, filmmakers, novelists, and the state... that war as displayed by the entertainment industry might, in most cases, as well be ballet and it is because of this that the masses get a false sense of what war entails (Hedges 2002, pg.3, 84). The Hurt Locker does the opposite of that, director Kathryn Bigelowdecides not to follow the typical structure of a war movie and elects to include the graphic images and sounds that remove the cover from this dream and reveal a nightmare. Specifically, the scene that stands out is when Staff Sargent William James finds the body of a boy who strongly resembles a friend named Beckham, which has been turned into a body bomb. Here the viewer is forced to look at the body, which is bloated due to it being stuffed with explosives, and the crude stitching used to close it. Bigelow elects to use a variety of close up and medium shots to include the reaction that Will and his squad have while staring at the body (Corrigan 2015). This alone is enough to make the viewer uncomfortable, but where she truly excels is during Will s removal of the bomb. Hedges states that one of the requirement to wake us up from the typical film is the deafening and disturbing noise (Hedges 2002, pg.84). Bigelow accomplishes this during the bomb removal by adding a loud snap every time Will cuts a suture (Bigelow 2009). Now, even if a person attempts to look away, this ... • 13. Winston Smith From Spongebob Squarepants Intro Essay I am sure that everyone, at least once, has compared themselves to a character from their favorite literary work or movie. Oftentimes parallels can be, and are drawn between the audience members and the characters on the page or screen. Other times people contrast themselves to characters, pointing out the stark differences between their real world lives and the high adventure thrills of the life of the characterin question. In this essay,I will compare myself to the personalities of Winston Smith from 1984, putting focus on our shared inquisitive and skeptical nature, as well as that of Spongebob Squarepants, with his cheerful disposition and sense of childlike wonder. And finally, I will be comparing myself with Russell, the kid from UP. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As the book progresses we see Winston gradually growing more and more doubtful that his dystopian environment is the way things should be. He is seen searching for the truth and is always weary about what may lie ahead. Although I do not ask questions on the same grand scale as Winston, I do have a naturally inquisitive, and somewhat skeptical nature. I find myself interested in the most abstract and bizarre concepts, sometimes relating to the possibility of time travel through quantum particles, and other times something as trivial as movie trivia. Thus, when I acknowledge someone s laziness in their responsibilities, typically, I ask the slacker to do her job again. Yet, when I begin to see that siblingconstantly forgetting to do that specific job, anger within me can harbor. Immediately, I make assumptions as to why she acts that way and can feel stressed out about the problem. Next, I angrily communicate the sibling s downfall considering the assumption I have of her, and I tell her how she must fix the problem. Without asking why she did not do her job, I insensitively corrected her. Or if the sibling has an explanation for her lethargy, I resist to show sympathy because of my frustration at the moment. However, after a scenario like this, I then can feel distressed at my own pride of thinking that I am right and my sibling is wrong. • 15. Nathaniel Hawthorne s Influence On American Literature... Nathaniel Hawthorne was one of the most important authors in the history of American literature and the genre of Romanticism or Dark Romanticism, due to his unique style of writing and his focus upon subjects of Puritan religion and the unknown. I consider Hawthorne an important author, due to the fact that he skillfully and accurately based his fictional writings upon happenings of colonial times, was one of the first authors to display unfortunate outcomes for his characters immoral choices according to Puritan beliefs, and wrote of things that were considered taboo in his time, such as witchcraft, scientific innovation and experimentation. I strongly believe that Hawthorne s influence for his writings were his Puritan ancestral background, his fascination with Puritan beliefs, and his interest in what was considered the unknown such as witchcraft and science. According to the Norton Anthology Textbook Vol. B, Nathaniel Hawthorne was born in Salem, Massachusetts in 1804 (370). Hawthorne belonged to a family whose ancestral roots were tied to Puritan history, with his family being among the first settlers of Massachusetts and having one of his relatives serve as a judge during the Salem witch trials (370). Hawthorne, as a young boy, had a particular interest in writings such as John Bunyan s Puritan allegory The Pilgrim s Progress, and by his mid teens he took interest in British novelists such as Henry Fielding, Tobias Smollet, William Godwin, and Sir Walter Scott ... The similarities between the thresholds and days of creation have similarities literally and metaphorically. The Big Bang, the emergence of matter forming planets and life; the first day, the creation of heaven and earth. Just like the Big Bang, the first day created the ability for life to emerge. The stars light up, the second day, Godcreated light. Although the light God created on the second day is metaphorically goodness, He created light. Before light, earthwas a void, no form, engulfed by darkness. God brings light. Not only will this process take legitimacy away from the Democrats in the long run, but it will also only cause the rightwing to go further to the right. The only way to successfully oppose the rightwing movement is to remain as logical and level headed as is possible. This is demonstrated in Claire Conner s experiences with the John Birch Society. While the society was incredibly powerful at one time, they eventually began to collapse once they went after prominent leaders. Many soon saw them as radical and un logical. As we let the rightwing movements spiral more and more out of control, anyone who is even close to moderate will leave them, thus weakening their power. Providing those whose opinions begin to dissent from this group an alternative is vital to opposing them. Another reason why it is so important to shy away from radical behavior and ideas is that it will make other liberal arguments weaker. It will be near impossible to convince rightwing supporters that their leaders are using coded racial appeals when they have already written us off. There have been many debates about this clause because the appropriate grounds for divorce are unclear. Some believe that a man can divorce a woman merely because he likes another one better (B. p.74). There is no safeguard against this because it is up to the man s judgment. The requirements of the Ketubah and the Get may not convince the man to stay married. The fact remains that on the one hand; a wife could not initiate a divorce without appealing to a Beit Din, and on the other hand may be divorced without her consent. The Talmud states A woman may be divorced with her consent or without it (B. 81). Rabbenu Gershom made a ruling that banned the divorcement of a woman without her consent. Although this is a positive legislation, a Beit Din has the power to revoke it when they deem necessary. The most problematic law is that while it is not always necessary for a woman to consent to a divorce, a man can give a divorce with only his full consent (Yevamot 112b) (B. 97). It is then up to the courts and the community to try to convince him to give his wife a divorce. Not much later, in Canto 5, the traveling duo comes upon a pair of lovers, condemned to an eternity of suffering due to a small case of incontinence. Dante is overcome with sympathy as he listens to their story, and promptly blacks out again, this time with even more dramatic flair: for pity I fainted as if I were dying, and I fell as a dead body falls [ln 141 142]. Before he hits the dust, he manages to express his sympathy to Francesca, one of the lovers: Francesca, your sufferings make me sad and piteous to tears [ln 116 117]. This sense of pity is an important indicator of his progress, or lack thereof, through Hell. At this, the beginning of his journey, Dante identifies with the condemned and thus has not only sympathy, but empathy toward them. He understands a life of sin and can picture himself in their place. As time goes by and the pilgrim s journey continues, Dante gets hardened against the strife and pain inflicted upon the sinners. Of course, seeing enough of anything begets tolerance, but in Dante s case his lessening sympathy shows lessening empathy as well. Those of a wealthier status are more capable of attainting culture, and therefore able to cultivate their nature. This may be one of the reasons why women, who were seen as imperfect men, did not have the freedom to explore their interiority (Marquis 1257). Women were not made in the image of God, but rather: she is the image of man in a restrictive and analogical sense, because woman was made from man, after man, inferior to him and his likeness (Farber). Women were by design lower in the hierarchy. Not only did the Renaissance now contemplate the self, but they also found celebration of the self. Cultural historian, Jacob Burckhardt, argues that: In the Middle Ages, man was conscious of himself only as a member of a race, people, party, family or corporation only through some general category (Burke 193). During the Renaissance, however: ...this veil first melted into air...man became a spiritual individual, and recognized himself as such (193). Man could now be a spiritual individual outside of the theological realm because of this humanist movement of the Renaissance. Toward the end of the 20th century and beginning of the 21st century, the American education system has continued to evolve with some new curricular modifications. In 1992, the ?Children of the Rainbow? curriculum was introduced in New York. This revolutionary curriculum required elementary schools to teach tolerance towards gays and lesbians. When applying discourse theory to a poem, it is important to analyze the language beyond the sentence itself. Discourse analysis studies the natural use of language, rather than the invented examples. The main objective of discourse analysis is to create a better understanding of how language is used through textual features and what effects it has on that investment. Texts often require these features that enables the reader to understand the motivation of that author. In his poem, Grass, Carl Sanburg utilizes verbs, proper nouns, and nouns to efficiently erase the signs of the past. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The price elasticity of supply tells us the percentage change in quantity supplied for each percent change in price. The value of price elasticity of supply for a normal good must always be positive, reflecting the fact that supply curves slope upward because of the positive relationship of price and quantity. Similarly as price elasticity of demand, price elasticity of supply can be also an extremely useful piece of information for business firms in deciding how much to produce their products. To see why a business might care about the price elasticity of supply, let s consider how an increase in price might affect a business s total revenue. Since price and quantity have a positive relationship in price elasticity of supply, a higher price will generally mean producing at a higher quantity, so the total revenue will increase. Economists have classified the possible range of values for price elasticity of supply as Inelastic Supply, Unitary Elastic Supply, and Elastic Supply . In the process of helping a supplier of a product that is currently fashionable to decide output decision, we must first identify the classification that the product is in right now as being fashionable . The Era of the Great Depression was one of both desperation and hope. Americans were desperate for a change, desperate for anything to come along that may improve their situation, yet hopeful that the light at the end of the tunnel was near. For many of those living in poverty during the 1930s, the radical leftist movements seen throughout the country appeared to be alternatives to the sometimes ineffective programs of FDR s New Deal. (Biles 123) Though his assassination in 1935 removed the threat of his possible candidacy, the strong support and influence of his followers caused the Roosevelt administration to move slightly more to the left. Upton Sinclair, a former socialist and founder of the EPIC plan, registered with the Democratic party in 1933 so he could run as a major party candidate in the 1934 California election for governor. (Polenberg 120) Though he lost the election, EPIC supporters succeeded in gaining 30 seats in California legislature, which ultimately pushed the state governor to endorse New Deal programs. (Biles 120) Sinclair, well known for a number of books he wrote (which often attacked the evils of a capitalistic society ), based his EPIC plan on the idea of creating an economy based on use rather than on profit. From an early age every American is taught that America contains a mixture of the world s cultures in a perfectly blended mixture. We honor and respect all cultures and invite them to bring their customs here to the United States. But do we really? Take for instance, the Hmong refugees who involuntarily moved to America. Cultural Assimilation seemed to be forced down the refugees throats. Keeping their native customs was looked on with horror and disgust. Cultural Assimilation is the process in which a person s and or groups culture comes to resemble that of another group. When most immigrants come to the Untied States they are heavily advised to take up English as their first language. You are advised to learn all about our government, how to drive, and the value of individualism. The idea of the Great Melting Pot is completely ironic to me. It gives the impression that we are all one big mixture of cultures. In reality the melting pot spreads thin all other cultures, but the American culture. Other cultures seem to be lost and assimilated into American ideologies and cultures. Cultural Assimilation for refugees and others, such as the Hmong can be incredibly difficult and life threatening. Take the Lee Family, for example. The Lee family arrived in the United States on December 18th in 1980. They left their country seeking political asylum and ended up in the U.S. They experiences first hand how different life ... • 50. Torture In The Middle Ages Torture is an action of severe physical or mental pain, or suffering for a purpose, such as extraction of information, confessions, or for punishments. In the Middle Ages torture was used for suffering and to punish captured enemies. It involved the usage of instruments to force evidence from witnesses, criminals, and slaves and was only committed by a public official or another person with similar authority. In ancient Greece and Rome, torture was lawfully used, it was usually used on slaves to extract information or confessions. Later, in early medieval Europe, torture was used as an ancient test of guilt or innocence by subjection of the person who was accused to extreme pain(Rodley 1). Survival was taken as a proof of innocence, the suspect s response to pain established guilt or innocence. But there were many methods used to torture people. In medieval times punishments were often for crimes. The people who tortured witnesses, criminals, and slaves, used methods like the rack, guillotine, mandatory bath, pillory and trial by combat.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The rack was introduced in England during 1420 and composed of a long wooden frame. At one end the victim s legs were tied up with ropes, and on the other end the arms were also tied. And if the victim ever refused to answer questions the rollers were turned until the victim s joints were dislocated. But there was one other torture device that was popular, it was an instrument used for capital punishments(also known as death penalty) by decapitation. This instrument was called the guillotine which was introduced into France in 1792. The guillotine device composed of two upright beams is placed on a crossbeam, with a sharp edged knife, which was heavily weighted to make come down hard and slice through the victim s head (Zimring ... • 51. Grendel Philosophies Philosophies are the ideas formed in one s mind, often about the world and the questions we have about it. As humans, we often pick one philosophy and stick with it. How would a monster like the character Grendel in the novel by John Gardner react to these philosophies? Throughout the novel, Grendel experiences and is conflicted with many different philosophies. Influenced by characters such as the Shaper, the Dragon, and the people of Hrothgar, Grendel experiences many philosophies such as Nihilism, Solipsism, and Machiavellianism. One of the major philosophies in the novel Grendel is Nihilism. Nihilism is the rejection of moral and religious principles, and the belief that life is small and meaningless. In the first few pages of the novel, John Gardner states that He cocks his head like an elderly, slow witted king, considers his angles, decides to ignore me. I stamp. I hammer the ground with my fists. I hurl a skull size stone at him. He will not budge. (Gardner, 5). Here is a snippet of Grendel s hatred towards life and even nature. Throughout the novel, Grendel proves to the reader that he doesn t really care about anybody except for himself. In this quote, Grendel sees a ram and tries to make it leave, only to fail. The ram just stays where it is and ignores Grendel, even when Grendel yells and throws a large rock at it. As John Gardner states, I understood that the world was nothing: a mechanical chaos of casual, brute enmity on which we stupidly impose our hopes ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 52. Essay On Tommy And Mr. Atkins A British soldier is expected to stand firm, with a non wavering heart as the enemy approaches. They are to protect the Queen and her beliefs at all costs. A gentleman and a fighter, that is a soldier of the Queen s army. They expect to return home to the people of the United Kingdom s praise and respect after their conquests, however they were met with mistreatment and sometimes scorn during the year of 1892. On the surface, Tommy is a representation of the juxtaposition of how war is seen by those that are being protected, but this creative piece is an example of what it is like when the people of a country respect the toils of war but not the soldier. Kipling accomplishes this by changing what could be good English to bad English so... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Although the sentence can be interpreted as though only one negative is used, the negative in the line They gave a drunk civilian room but adnt none for me; (13) influences the reader to truly understand the soldiers feeling of being discriminated against two times better than they would have with one negative. The use of the negative concord does just that. It increases the negative feeling of the sentence by increasing the number of negatives. This gives the reader the ability to picture the emptiness the soldier must have felt as he was forced to sleep in the hall in lieu of a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 53. Chaucer The Pilgrim Essay In The Personality of Chaucer the Pilgrim, John M. Major explores the qualities of Chaucer s character in The Canterbury Tales. In the piece, Chaucer inserts himself into the story as one of the pilgrims who make the trip to Canterbury, but the uses and characteristics of the character can often appear conflicting and confusing. In his piece, Major closely examines the characteristics of Chaucer s character and succeeds in making sense of exactly which approach Chaucer took in creating his character and why he would do so. Major begins by examining the relationship between the Chaucer who authored the piece and the Chaucer who exists as a character in the piece and participates in the journey.Citing an older essay by E. Talbot Donaldson,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the most interesting and insightful segment of the piece, Major states that, This Narrator reveals himself to be, like his creator... witty, sophisticated... and, above all, ironic. Such a man is very well aware of the significance of what he observes, though he may show his awareness by subtly means (Major 160 161). Major stresses that it would take a considerably dense individual to fail to realize that he made contradictions in admiring vastly different people. Such a person is so far removed from Chaucer s own self that it is difficult to compare the two, and he wouldn t even be fit to travel with the characters and record their tales with appropriate nuance and detail anyway. Major concludes that the Narrator often made his comments and observations with deliberate use of irony. This is most apparent in line 251 when Chaucer states that Ther nas no man nowher so vertous (A 251) coming, as it does, in the midst of other lines that so obviously and even heavily point up the Friar s greed and hypocrisy (Major 161). As Major argues, it would be impossibly odd for the Narrator of all people to fail to see the faults in his companions. The major new insight I took away from this article is derived from such an observation: Chaucer likely had his Narrator employ the use of irony so as to create a persona that initially appeared to be dim and ...
