The Lady Of Shalott Essay
Among the multiple tempting Pre Raphaelites paintings, The Lady of Shalott of 1888 by John
William Waterhouse (1849 1917) fascinates me the most. John William Waterhouse was a
romantic artist that has a strong love with beautiful but tragic female figures. The Lady of Shalott
as one of his best known painting illustrated part IV of great poet Tennyson s poem of a young
Victorian woman s cursed life.
The poem tells a mythical story of a beautiful woman who lives isolated on the island called
Shalott, on a river which flows downstream from King Arthur s castle reaching the town Camelot.
The lady of Shalott was imprisoned in the four grey towers and had never been seen by anyone,
yet many have heard of her lovely singing. She lives upon an undisclosed curse that banned her
from looking out of her window down to the Camelot. Therefore, day by day she weaves this
colorful and magical netting in her tower and only gazes through the reflection of reality through
her mirror. One day, upon seeing a gorgeous looking knight called Sir Lancelotpasses by the river,
the lady of Shalott cannot resist but to turn around and take a glimpse at the man. With that one
glance, the mirror cracks and the curse befalls her. The painting was the visualization of her last
living moments toward her tragic death. She wears a snowy white rove and sings her last song as
she sails down to the Camelot to chase after the knight. She sings until her blooded is frozen and
her eyes darken, yet she

Deep Allegory in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown Essay
Deep Allegory in Young Goodman Brown
Herman Melville in Hawthorne and His Mosses (The Literary World August 17, 24, 1850),
comments on the deep allegory found within Nathaniel Hawthorne s tale, Young Goodman Brown.
Young Goodman Brown ? You would of course suppose that it was a simple little tale, intended as
a supplement to Goody Two Shoes. Whereas, it is deep as Dante; nor can you finish it, without
addressing the author in his own words It is yours to penetrate, in every bosom, the deep mystery
of sin. And with Young Goodman, too, in allegorical pursuit of his Puritan wife, you cry out in your
anguish. . . .
The use of allegory in his short stories is characteristic of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the ... Show

Stanley T. Williams in Hawthorne s Puritan Mind states that the author was always perfecting his
delicate craft of the symbol, of allegory (42). A. N. Kaul states : In an effort to apprehend and
adequately reflect the new complexity of man s life, he [Hawthorne] molded the venerable in his
case directly inherited allegorical method into the modern technique of symbolism (3).
M. H. Abrams defines an allegory as a narrative, whether in prose or verse, in which the agents
and actions, and sometimes the setting as well, are contrived by the author to make coherent sense
on the literal, or primary, level of signification, and at the same time to signify a second, correlated
order of signification (5). It is quite obvious from the names of the characters in Young Goodman
Brown that their names are contrived to give a secondary signification. Goodman is on the
primary level a simple husband who is following his curiosity about evil; on the level of
secondary signification he is Everyman or the new Adam: R. W. B. Lewis in The Return into
Rime: Hawthorne states: Finally, it was Hawthorne who saw in American experience the re
creation of the story of Adam and who . . . exploited the active metaphor of the American as Adam
before and during and after the Fall (72). Goodman responds in this way to the fellow traveler
when the latter implicates the governor in devilish deeds:
Can this be so! cried Goodman Brown, with a stare of amazement at his

Candide by Voltaire Essay example
Voltaire was the author of the novella Candide, also known as Optimism . The the novella, Voltaire
portrays the idea of Optimism as being illogical and absurd. In Candide, Voltaire satirizes the
doctrine of Optimism, an idea that was greatly used during the Enlightenment time period by
philosophers. In this narrative, Candideis a young man who goes through a series of undertakings
and ventures around the the globe where he experiences evil and adversity. Throughout his
journeys, Candide maintained the ideas of the teachings of his tutor, Pangloss. Candide and
Pangloss believed in the idea that All is for the best in the best of all possible worlds... (Voltaire4).
This belief is what Voltaire pointed out to be an irrational way of... Show more content on

To Voltaire, this type of optimism was foolish.
Even though many people practiced this doctrine Voltaire did not aside with it instead, he implanted
doubts on the chances of achieving true happiness and real conformism. Voltaire s opinion was that
one could not achieve true happiness in the real world but only experience it in an utopia. With the
many hardships that Candide goes through ultimately leads him to abandon his attitude of
optimism. Candide s misfortunes and adversities often contrasted with his optimistic view on life.
Noticeably, Voltaire uses this satirical piece as a way to criticize this exaggerated optimism. This
tale as stated by William Bottiglia, Has had a great effect on modern writers who confront mankind
s inhumanity to fellow human beings by presenting the human condition absurdly, ironically, and
humorously... (Bottiglia 112).
The theme of criticism the best of all possible worlds is present through the whole story.
Throughout the novel, Voltaire uses optimism satire to contrast with the catastrophes and human
affliction in the story. When Candide finds a moribund and sick Pangloss, Candide asks who is
at fault for his tragedy and Pangloss replies that The disease was a necessity in this the best of all
possible worlds , for it was brought to Europe by Columbus men, who also brought chocolate and
cochineal, two greater goods that well offset any negative effects of the disease, (Voltaire 17). With

Good Management Strategy
Internal and External Factors Paper
Around the globe organization rely on strong management principles to move forward and a
strategy which would lead the way forward. This strategy is mostly based on the core functions of
management. A good management strategy requires setting clear objectives which are worked
towards by utilizing best practices, implementing policies and making use of all available resources.
Success is imperative to strong management functions which include: Planning, organizing, leading
and controlling. For a business to achieve success, management must need to define clear paths for
all these functions yet ensuring all the internal and external factors influencing the business are
dealt with effectively. The decision making process also largely depends on these internal and
external factors like globalization, technology, innovation, diversity and ethics.
External factors
As Wal Mart stores begin to grow by numbers all across USA, the choice of locality also became a
point of concern for the management. Presence of Wal Mart centers in modest vicinities meant
more challenges for the organization. Such kind of external challenge can affect all four functions
of management planning. Attention to small details was the key in this situation, by doing the
basics right and making critical changes to the projects, was the success factor.
Concentrating on the four management function, it brings front a number of answers to the

Technology In Ray Bradbury s Short Story The Veldt
Imagine a world with technology that can do everything for you. All you have to do is ask, or
even just think, for something. It is an amazing high tech world, but human relationships are
destroyed. Everyone is so invested in technology they don t engage with each other. Soon, the
world becomes a cold, lonely society where technology is in power. This could become our world
in the future. In the short story, The Veldt
. Two parents, George and Lydia, believe something is
wrong with their nursery(a high tech room that portrays scenes). For it seems their children, Peter
and Wendy, have set the room to a murderous African Veldt with horrid creatures of death(death,
vultures). Then, the parents start to believe the children are spoiled rotten by the technology that...

children use this harmless piece of technology, meant to strengthen minds, to harm others. Things
like this happen all the time in real life. People go online and hack into accounts to steal identities
and money. People have also turned harmless pieces of technology into weapons, just like Peter
and Wendy. When people turn technology into sinister devices to harm other, it lowers the quality
of life. As stated in The Veldt, The two children were in hysterics. They screamed and pranced and
threw things. They yelled and sobbed and swore and jumped at the furniture. You can t do that to
the nursery, you can t (Bradbury 9). As shown in the evidence, Wendy and Peter freak out once
their parents shut off the nursery. The kids completely overreact, because they are so attached to
the technology. This happens all the time in real life as children throw tantrums when their phone
or other technology is taken. There has even been times, like in the story, where kid murder their
parents due to taken devices. People become so attached to their devices that it blocks their
common sense. They go to

How To Write An Essay About Cleopatra
Queen of Egypt for nearly 300 years, Cleopatra VII was one of the first female rulers at the time.
Cleopatra was a very smart women. She studied many subjects such as philosophy, literature, art,
music, and medicine. She also knew six different languages, which were Aramaic, Ethiopic,
Greek, Hebrew, Latin, and of course Egyptian. This made her a very powerful and wise pharaoh.
Cleopatra was the oldest of two. She had a younger brother, Ptolemy XIII, who ruled the
Macedonian dynasty with her. Her father was King Ptolemy XII, who ruled the Ptolemaic reign
for 26 years. There isn t much information about her mother, but in the article on biography.com
it says, Little is known about Cleopatra s mother, but some speculation presumes she may have
been her father s sister, Cleopatra V Tryphaena. (Biography.com Editors) When King Ptolemy
XII died in 51 B.C., he left the throne to Cleopatra and her brother Ptolemy XIII. At that time

Villanelle
Death is inevitable; there is no going around it. Do not go gentle into that good night by Dylan
Thomas is a short villanelle poem written in 1951. The author was born in Swansea, Wales on
October 27, 1914. Raised by his father, David John Thomas, which was an English master at the
local grammar school, and became a big influence for Dylan Thomas. In the author s poem the
speaker addresses his father that if he must die then he should die with a fight. Nevertheless, the
poem has a universal meaning in which humanity should not fear the unknown, but they should
confront it.
At the beginning of the poem, the speaker argues to not go peaceful by using aggressive choice of

In the past, Poets usually employed the villanelle for light or bucolic subjects, a kind of peacefully
rural poem or pastoral . In the poem, the villanelle is used in an uncommon form for the following
reason: the poem does not preach calm, as might be expected, but rage, rage against death, that
event often equated with Nature as an ultimate physical force (Jhan). The ending of a villanelle is
the most important because it is the central message of the poem. The speaker is persuading the
readers the importance to not die without a word. With the last stanza And you, my father, there
on the sad height (Thomas 16). The readers can conclude that the speaker is a son standing next
to the deathbed of his father. Although deathbeds are low to the ground, the admiration of his
father is a sad height because he looked up to him. Coincidently, the author was experiencing the
same situation, making this poem very personal. One can only imagine these were his last
thoughts as his father was dying. The readers can assume this poem was written in villanelle form
to present it to his father. In the last stanza the speaker is imploring to his father to not go
peacefully, but to be part of these men that refuse to die. In these last lines it finalizes the poem into

The Prague Spring Trio, And Alex
Introduction In establishing an enforceable contract it must first be held that there is an agreement
between the Prague Spring Trio (PST) and Alex. In order for an agreement to be upheld, there are
two elements which must be established. First, it must then be identified that an offer was made by
one party and a second party accepted this offer. Secondly, a contract comes into existence once the
acceptance of an offer has been communicated to the offeror. Therefore, this assignment will discuss
and advise whether Alex made an offer to the PST and whether the band accepted this offer by
communicating it to Alex. Additionally, whether any consideration has been provided, and whether

The advertisement is classified as an invitation to treat. An offer is distinguished from an
invitation to treat as it allows individuals to provide offers or enter into negotiations. Similar to
that of Pharmaceutical Society, the offer is when Alex applied for the saxophonist position,
comparable to when the customer picks the bottle of medicine from the shelves and places it on
the cash register. This does not amount to acceptance, it is merely an offer of which the band
has discretion to negotiate terms or reject the offer. Acceptance Acceptance is assessed on
whether there was a meeting of the minds and that the acceptance corresponds with the offer.
This is taken as an objective approach and can be concluded that acceptance has occurred where
a person conducts themselves in such a way that a reasonable person would believe that they
were assenting to the terms of the contract. PST had sent Alex a telegram informing her that she
was the successful candidate, alongside having correspondence via mobile in which PST
informed Alex to come to the rehearsal, which in accordance with the advertisement ensured Alex
would receive an all expenses paid trip. This suggests that Alex s offer was accepted by the band,
and the band s conduct in telling Alex where rehearsals were being held, along side an additional
promise of $2000 at the rehearsal, would insinuate to a reasonable person that acceptance had
occurred. Under this

The Importance Of Income Inequality
Another perception to view income inequality with is the exchange and choice perspective.
When resources are exchanged, as the core process in social life with the desire to maximize
benefits and minimize costs, a basic belief that social relationships occur in a social marketplace
in which people give in order to get in the basis for the social exchangetheory (Hutchison, 2015).
The study of attitudes toward economic inequality can be characterized as a study of whether the

A Prince By Lao Tzu
Rattling the Cages
The actions of individuals are controlled essentially by one thing, the mind of that individual. The
citizens of this world are able to partake in any actions they desire. People should forget the
thought of limits and restraints and everything should govern itself. Doing nothing will allow
everything to harmonize with each other. These ideas come from the writer Lao tzu in the piece
called Thoughts from the Tao te Ching. Lao tzu presents many idealist ways in his writing. The
main focus is on the idea that people are able to govern themselves and partake in the actions they
desire without restraint. As he wisely states, Practice not doing, and everything will fall into place
(206, Lao tzu). This advice is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Restraint is an aspect that is required today in order to have a successful government and society.
Without limiting certain elements of culture, such as military and pollution, society would slowly
decay. Society should incorporate both the idealistic ways of Lao tzu and the realistic ways of
Machiavelli in restraint in order to maintain civility. The advice given by Lao tzu is idealistic
and revolves around the idea of practicing nothing. First is the idea that civilians of this world are
able to govern themselves; limits and restraint must not exisit. The government would still exist,
but not present itself in the daily lives of the people; the ability to carry out actions more freely
would increase. The government should be able to rule and the citizens not be aware of its
existence. Freedom on all levels allows true happiness to prevail. People would be content in their
own ways and not want to leave the country and travel. Ultimately, by practicing nothing, all the
elements of the world would simply fall into place and maintain themselves. Sadly, the outcome
of pure happiness would not prevail. With no limits or laws, individuals are free to do as they
please. This would not result in perfect harmony between people, but would create more chaos. Not
all humans possess good morals to discourage them from violent and criminal behavior. Laws and
restraints are crucial to have

Susquehanna River Essay
The health of the Susquehanna River and Chesapeake Bay was found based on Biological
(macroinvertebrates and wildlife) and Chemicals characteristics (pH, dissolved oxygen, phosphates,
nitrates, etc.) as well as physical observations (amount of forested buffers, wetlands, etc.) Overall it
was concluded that the health of the water was good to excellent. What was found was that many
of the macroinvertebrates found in the water were sensitive or facultative, meaning the water
quality was good enough for them to live in. Also, the level of ph, temperature, dissolved oxygen,
phosphates, nitrates, and turbidityshowed that the water quality was good. Finally, while we were

Underwater grasses, or Elodea, was observed as well. This wide variety of life is a good indicator
of the water s health.
The chemical characteristics observed and documented were pH, temperature, phosphate, nitrate,
turbidity, and dissolved oxygen. Each of these chemical levels were documented and found
differently. Most were found using a kit or a device. The numbers found, would tell us how
polluted the stream was and how much nutrients were in the water. Each chemical has a scale for
telling what a good level is and what a bad level is. If an excess amount of nutrients was found in
the water, algae could be formed. When algae is formed it blocks sunlight from shining into the
water, which creates dead zones. This is called eutrophication. A dead zone is an area where there is
no life. This can cause major problems like population issues and more. If the algae continues to
grow in the river, the whole body of water can die out, and people as well as other organisms are
very dependent on the Susquehanna. While on the river though, there was an absence of algae, so
sunlight is able to get through the water, which is very good.
Physical characteristics are important as well. While canoeing, many things were observed and
notices. Tires were seen at the bottom of the river. This is most likely because of the highway that
runs on both sides or the river, and over it on bridges too. Because of the highway, there is a high

The Sorrow Of War And Full Metal Jacket Essay
The Sorrow of War and Full Metal Jacket both have one main element in common the Vietnam War.
Other than the similar time period, these two representations of the Vietnam War differ drastically.
The Sorrow of War, a novel written by Bao Ninh, follows a North Vietnamese solider named Kien
during his years fighting for the communist regime and documenting his hardships before, during,
and after the war. Full Metal Jacket is a movie that depicts the American side of the war in Vietnam
,
focusing on one group of Marine recruits and their journey to the frontlines. Both representations
contain similar themes of mental illness, personal sufferings, and unfathomable wartime situations.
Nevertheless, I believe that The Sorrow of War captures human emotion and turmoil more
precisely than Full Metal Jacket does through the author s word choice and exemplary
descriptions of his sorrows experienced due to the war. The Sorrow of War shows the Vietnam
War from a communist s point of view; a perspective that is often overlooked and misunderstood by
Americans. This literary work exemplifies the idea that all humans encompass feelings and
emotions regardless of their political affiliation, citizenship, and/or ethnicity. Furthermore,
Americans are seen as the bad guys to the North Vietnamese, invading their country, killing their
people, and raping their women. Another realistic aspect of The Sorrow of War is how Kien
suffers from survivor s guilt he is unable, even in decades after

The Cultural Value Of Pandas
Another remarkable value panda withheld is its extraordinary cultural value. The two colors the
panda has might be the two most extreme any species. It is black and white. Therefore the giant

According to the Encyclopedia Britiannica, Yin Yang is the two complementary forces that make

demonstration of how Yin and Yang work in nature. When Yin and Yang are perfectly balanced.
There will be one less thing to represent this unique idea if we do not save these endangered species

on their website that the WWF founders would like a strong and recognizable symbol to
overcome all language barriers and thus panda is agreed to be the best choice for the logo of
WWF ( Giant ). The panda logo of WWF is iconic and has recognized as a universal symbol for
conservation movement. It moves people. Apart from appearing as the logo of WWF, it was also
selected as one of the five mascots for the 2008 Beijing Olympics (Charles). This shows that panda

Domestic Violence And Social Learning Theories
Domestic Violence is a very important issue to look at for people in the relationships as well for
the children. When children see certain behaviors, they see it as normal even though it may not be
normal to other people who did not grow up in an abusive home. The theory that can be used for
children who have been in a domestic violencesituation is social learning theory. The social
learning theory was discovered by Albert Bandura in 1977 (McLeod, 2011). Albert Bandura
corresponds with the behaviorist learning theories of classical and operant conditioning (McLeod,
2011). However, he adds two important ideas: mediating processes occur between stimuli and
responses and behavior is learned from the environment through the process of observational...

toward those toys, so she called the doctor to make sure that it was normal for her child to show

reproduction, and motivation (Wheeler, 2014). People learn better when they are focused on a task,
if seeing something being done differently or unusual, then it tends to strike the attention of that
person who is focused (Wheeler, 2014). Retention is affecting information in our memories that
people recall later when needed to respond to a situation that is the same as the first learned

physical preparation that improves our responses from the that learned information (Wheeler,

Building A Safer Health Care System
According to Err is Human: Building a Safer Health Care System, thousands of Americans die
annually due to medical errors and hundreds of thousands are victims of a non fatal medical errors
or injuries (Kongstvedt, 2013). With that being said, health care is composed of three main
components: quality, access, and cost (Tabish, 2009). High quality care could prevent many of
these fatalities or never events that occur within the health care organization. Historically speaking,
many health care changes and improvements in quality of care have occurred due to quality
management and quality assurance. To fully understand how quality is achieved and maintained, it
is important to dissect these two programs or processes. This paper will analyze the key
components of a quality management program as well as discuss characteristics that distinguish a
quality management program from traditional quality assurance. Quality Before understanding a
quality management program and traditional quality assurance, it is important to understand the
definition of quality. Quality is composed of two elements, content and delivery (Brent, nd).
Content quality is related to the medical outcome that has been achieved. While delivery quality is
based upon the patients interaction with the health care system, also known as the patient s
impression of the organization such as its environment, the providers and caretakers, and treatment.
Together, content and delivery create quality. (Brent, nd) Quality

Importance Of Political Egalitarianism
Political egalitarianism is the essential principle of any democratic society. All citizens have
equal conditions for participation in political life. However, the reality is that the principle of
political equality of citizens coexists with the social hierarchy that has developed around the socio
professional categories, the level of education and income, classes and etc. Because we consider
democracy as the only right way of governing people it is important to understand what makes
some participate and the others to stay away from the whole process. Income can be one of the
major factors that affects participation and needs to be studied in details. In particular, this work
compares how people with different economic situations participate in the society, specifically
whether they try to help to solve problems in the community if they ask help from government
officials and etc. It also examines other factors like trust in the political system, trust in the election,
and believe that politicians listen to the needs of people. Many studies on different countries have
established that the greater economic status of the individuals corresponds to greater political
participation. Political commitment is quite rigidly subordinates to the following logic: a certain
social and economic position that evokes a sense of social and political competence generates a
certain level of political participation. Understanding political participation presupposes the ability

Frida Kahlo Flower
A Flower from the Ashes OR Beauty Through Fire Frida Kahlo was a phoenix. Phoenixes are
mythical birds, often with flaming feathers, but by far, the most interesting quality of a phoenix is
its death. When a phoenix dies, it burns up into a heap of ashes. Then, from the ashes a new baby

Not Our Stars, But The Most Well Known Epic Poems Of The...
Not in Our Stars, But in Ourselves
Whose fault? / Whose but his own? is a question that has been raised many times in human history
(Milton 3.96). Many authors and poets have tackled the question of why humanity is constantly
tested and tempted to sin, and, further, whether humanity has the free will to decide its own fate.
After the Reformation of the Catholic church that created Protestantism, the idea of
predestination was very popular. Protestant ideology claimed that only a few people were
destined to be saved or damned by God, and that only some people will be saved. This created a
general anxiety about faith and free will in Renaissance England, leading many to question who
was at fault when human beings sin. Two of the most well known epic poems of the Renaissance
era are The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser and Paradise Lost by John Milton. Both poems
feature characters that face trials and tribulations, and how the respective poems deal with the
trails reveals different ideas about fate, free will, and the idea of being tested. Both poems use
temptation relation to female bodies and sexual desire, diverse reactions to falling and failure, and
prophecy that contribute to two different ideas about free will and the role of God in the lives of
his creations.
Female seduction and sexual temptation are featured both in The Faerie Queene and Paradise
Lost, but are represented in different ways. In Paradise Lost, Eve leads to the eventual downfall of
Adam because she

A Good Man Is Hard To Find Misfit Character Analysis
Naturally as humans we like to identify ourselves with a set of values. This code helps to form a
sense of being, an identity that sets us apart from others. However, inconsistency is just as much
a part of humanity as is our sense of morals. Common decency is plagued by our desires. In
Flannery O Connor s A Good Man Is Hard to Find, we follow a grandmother and her family, and we
learn about her own selfish values. Throughout the story she acts in a manner that falls in
contradiction to what she believes to be a lady and good. Right from the start we see that she will
lie and sneak to get what she wants. In contrast, the Misfit, a runaway criminal, has no pretention of

consideration. He questions his role in the world and why he acts the way he does, rather than
merely accepting a label as a good or bad person. It is this contemplation that gives his story
weight. Thusly his role is solidified in the audience s mind as an antihero, as a man with consistent

condition. In order to really understand the message of the blues you have to be one that has
suffered just like Sonny and the elder brother. The blues that they play also communicates to other
sufferers who have had their own trials, so they know what this music is all about. Sonny s
suffering are within himself, but deep suffering is common to all his listeners. Even his brother can
attune himself to this suffering, which is brought on by the death of his little daughter Grace. When
the brother is at the club listening to the blues he recalls his mother, the moonlit road on

The Impact of Rana Catesbeiana in Arizona
The Impact of Rana Catesbeiana in Arizona Invasive species are organisms that are accidentally or
intentionally introduced into an environment, that adapts quickly and disrupts the natural
ecosystem. Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana) are native to the northeastern part of North America and
are some of the most damaging invasive species. Many cultures around the world eat frogas a
delicacy, so bullfrogs were gathered up and sold around the world. However, some of the
species were introduced into countries around the world. Currently, they have become
established in over fifteen countries as invasive species (Save The Frogs! et al. 2013). Many
sources say that the initial spread of this invasive species began at the end of the 1800 s when
bullfrogs were shipped to California to fill hungry loggers appetite for frog legs. The frogs
competed with the other native species with the supply of natural resources while also consuming
and exploiting the native amphibian species as well. Worldwide Ranacatesbeiana has driven over
one hundred native species of frogs to extinction (Save The Frogs! et al. 2013). This is a huge
impact on amphibian wildlife worldwide because there are about 4,800 species of frogs. Over the
past hundred years the bullfroghas wiped out over 2% of the world s species of frogs. Studies have
shown one of the reasons bullfrogs will cripple Arizonian ecosystems and the native amphibian
species directly is because a female bullfrog s physiology

Research Paper On Software Modeling
This research paper will be focus on different software modeling techniques. Software modeling is
concerned with development process of software. Software modeling is central part of almost all
activities that took place in software development. These models help us to envision a system
according to our requirement by describing the structure and behavior of the system. There are
three basic techniques of software modeling; object oriented modeling, dynamic modeling and
functional modeling. Object oriented modeling concept start in 1990s, its basic building block is
object that is the instant of any class, and here class is a template containing attributes and methods
of objects. Classes and their relationships are present in class diagram. As a class have many type

work in specific format which is called software. So, when a problem arises or identified and one

Essay On Valuation Risk And Return
Valuation, Risk, and Return
Five years ago, Laissez Faire Recliners issued $10,000,000 of corporate bonds with a 30 year
maturity. The bonds have a coupon rate of 10.125%, pay interest semiannually, and have a par
value of $1,000 per bond. The bonds are currently trading at a price of $879.625 per bond. A 25 year
Treasury bond with a 6.825% coupon rate (paid semi annual) and $1,000 par is currently selling
for $975.42. In order to find the yield spread between the corporate bonds and the Treasury
bonds we must first find the yields of both bonds. The yield is the amount of return an investor
can expect to receive from a bond. The yield for the corporate bond (found using the yield formula
in excel) is 11.57%. The yield for the Treasury... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In addition we believe the firm is in a constant state of growth, and our required rate of return for

share. If we are looking at whether or not we would purchase these shares or not we must first
calculate the return on equity, which is done by net income (1,417,500) by the stockholders equity
(6,000,000), which gives us a return of equity of 15.5%. This is only accurate when calculating the
present value of cash flows method. Another method is the free cash flow method, which we
calculate by looking at the year, growth status, growth rate, FCF calculation, FCF and WACC.
The growth status is given as constant and the growth rate is given at 15.5%. This makes the
FCF calculation of 1.15. The first year FCF is also given as $109,237. In order to calculate the
following years FCF we take the first years FCF ($109,237) and multiply it by (1+WACC) the
weighted average cost of capital is also given at the appropriate discount rate of 15.83%. Using
the before mentioned formula we find that the FCF of year two is $126529.22. If Laissez Faire s
common stock were to have a more fluctuated growth pater (25% in years 1 through 6, 20% in
years 7 through 10, and 15% for years 11 and beyond), the purchase decision would change. This
growth is exponentially more profitable to the purchaser and guarantees a more

Chocolate Syrup and Milk
Introduction: We were testing the solubility of the chocolate syrup brands while being stirred in
whole milk. Our purpose is to see which of the major brands of syrup is most soluble and for
what reason. This is important to our daily lives because it makes us aware of what types of
materials we are ingesting and this applies to our experiment by seeing which of the ingredients
take longer to dissolve. Information known is all brands are known to dissolve in milk but they all
use different ingredients and they will cause a difference in the time it takes to dissolve. New
information that will be gained from this experiment is which ingredients inside chocolate syrup
will take the longest to dissolve, from the type of sugars in it to the syrups. We expected the
Nesquik to dissolve the fastest because it did not contain any high fructose corn syrupwhile the
other brand of syrup did. Also we observed from the syrups that nesquik was very thin, while the
others were very thick and slow in behaviour. Our hypothesis is that the Nesquik will disintegrate
the fastest in the milk because it lacks High Fructose Corn Syrup.
Materials Procedures:
Materials:
1. Hershey s Chocolate Syrup
2. Nesquik Chocolate Syrup
3. Great Value Chocolate Syrup
4. Any ONE of brand whole milk

Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim Analysis
When the topic of significant historical figures from the mid 17th century to present arises, people s
minds typically gravitate towards a handful of usual suspects. Some examples might include George
Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, to include
villainous figures such as Benito Mussolini, Joseph Stalin, and of course, Adolph Hitler. While
these impactful historical characters are indeed intriguing, as there are countless books, articles,
documentaries, and other literary pieces telling their respective stories, it is also important to learn
and become further educated on other, less known historical figures. We all are pieces that
eventually fit into our world s grand historical puzzle. And without historical education and learning
about the people that paved the path for the world today, we can never truly understand today s
world. Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheimis a sizable piece of our historical puzzle, and his story is one
that deserves recognition. Born on June 4, 1867, Carl Gustaf Emil Mannerheim was born into a
wealthy family. He was son to a Swedish nobleman who was highly regarded in his society. Carl
Gustaf spoke better in Swedish and Russian tongue than he could in Finnish, but this would prove
obsolete in his ability to accel in Finlandlater in life.1 Mannerheim started his military education at
the Hamina Cadet School, though he was eventually expelled from the institution due to
disciplinary reasons.2 Following

The Transformation Of Class And Occupational Structure Of...
At this time, the descendant of Mathew Maule, Holgrave, lives with Hepzibah in the decrepit
mansion. However, unlike Hepzibah, Maule is healthy and thriving during the industrialization.
With the social change of the nineteenth century, Maule is given the opportunity to become more
than the past would have ever allowed his ancestors, [who were] generally poverty stricken;
always plebeian and obscure; working with unsuccessful diligence at handicrafts (Hawthorne 15).
In Colonel Pyncheon s time, the Maule family was in the poor plebian class and easily erasable
by the Colonel. Now Maule not only lives in the Pyncheon mansion but is prospering better than
Hepzibah. Holgrave s occupation is also different from his ancestor s carpentry work. He is a
daguerreotypist; the first profession to successfully create photographs. Melanie Archer, author of
Class Formation in Nineteenth century America: The Case of the Middle Class, states that in the
nineteenth century...The development of the middle class is rooted in the transformation of class
and occupational structure (3). Holgrave s profession coincides with his and the emerging middle
class s progressive personalities and drive. Hawthorne utilizes the Maule family to contrast the

illustrate that, the middle class comprised not only a significant segment of the nineteenth century

Political Change In Syria
In 2011, a few years prior to the bombing of the Temple of Baalshamin, Syria officially became a
country plagued by continuous conflict. A civil uprising began against the government of the
country and started what is now known as the Syrian Civil War. Mass numbers of Syrian
individuals were displeased with what they felt was a corrupt political regime ruling their country
and sought to create a better way of life through their pro democracy protest. Unfortunately, as the
government fought back and Syrian citizens continued to protest, shots were fired and the country
collectively spiraled out of control leaving around eighty percent of the population in poverty by

Without knowing this, conflict and destruction will continue to occur in Syria, and for that matter the
rest of the world.
What then is currently being done to stop such atrocities from occurring? Specifically in the case
of the Temple of Baalshamin, many if not all of the preventative and preservation systems set in
place to save remnants of human history only look at solving the problem at a surface level. For
example, the Million Image Database Project and the New Palmyra Project both focus on
preserving the Temple of Baalshamin through the collection of pictures and using digital computer
renderings, in hopes that one day this site and potentially other sites could be rebuilt or forever
preserved through the internet. While important as a step towards reducing loss, neither of these
specific preservation examples seek to prevent such destruction from occurring in the first place. Be
that as it may, even if there were a hundred systems in place that specifically attempt to prevent such
instances of destruction from happening, it is highly likely they would focus only on alleviating
issues that are at the surface layer of the underlying issues in a society, such as relieving hunger,
poverty, and other forms of human distress. In order to truly prevent violent, heinous, and hateful
acts of destruction from happening, one must look at preventing the issue by resolving

Use Of Narrative Voice In Atonement
Narrative voice and points of view are indispensable parts of storytelling. Explore the use of
narrative voice employed by the authors of Atonement and A Room with a View.
In the novel Atonement, the author Ian McEwan uses narrative voice to grasp the attention of the
reader whilst alternating points of view to create a diverse plot. He does this through the novel
being perceived as several narrators for us to then realise it s one voice. McEwan uses prolepsis to
hint at future events which he uses to intrude the story. In the same way, this is also an evident
theme in E.M Forster s a Room with a View. Similarly, to Atonement, A Room with a View has a
thought provoking narrative viewpoint in the sense that it is a bildungsroman about Lucy
Honeychurch. Forster writes in an omniscient tone, which means that the characters are dictated to
us his narration and the character s dialogue; this debatably affects the reader s sympathy to the
other characters in the play like Cecil Vyse. Likewise, it is evident that authorial intrusion creates a
high level of authenticity to the story.
In Atonement, it is evident that the author Ian McEwan is trying to highlight the characters inner
mental state, he does this by using the literacy device of prolepsis. McEwan steps back from the
original first person narrative to describe how Briony was struggling with the temptation to flounce
from the room . He repeats this device throughout the novel, using metanarrative to build up tension.

This article addressed a study of a cognitive behavioral course to increase a sense of coherence
(SOC) and decrease perceived stress (PS). Low SOC and high PS are factors that lead to burnout
and low job satisfaction. They can also contribute to low quality of care and productivity.
Therefore, it is expected that if a nurse has high SOC and low PS, the nurse will have higher
productivity and will be better at managing stress. The study consisted of 36 nurses that had five
or more years of experience and had worked both as a bedside nurse and in an administrative
role. They were divided into intervention and control groups and all participants took surveys at
the beginning of week one and the end of week 16 that included the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS)
and the Profile of Mood States (POMS). The intervention group participated in a cognitive

The Three Leadership Competencies Of An Army Leader
You can ask ten different Soldiers what an Army leader is, or what they believe a good Army
leader is. It will not matter the rank, time in service or the maturity level of that Soldier because
more than likely you will get ten different answers. Everyone has their own opinions on what an
Army leader is, or what they believe a good Army leader is. By definition leadershipin the Army is
the process of influencing people by providing purpose, direction, and motivation to accomplish
the mission and improve the organization (ADRP 6 22, 2012). There are three leadership
competencies that make an Army leader; leads, develops and achieves. Leadership comes in all
types of styles. No two Army leaders will have the same style. There is a saying that goes around
our ranks today, Your leadership traits strongly reflect your past leadership. Meaning that you will
develop traits and habits that you have seen in your past leadership. Whether they are good or
bad, you will not notice them yourself until you think about what you are doing or saying. It takes
time to develop as a leader, and you will know when you find your style that works for you and
you re Soldiers. Leading subordinates to success starts with building trust with your subordinates. It
is important to gain trust throughout the ranks because without trust it is hard to influence Soldiers
and complete the overall mission. You do not just receive trust automatically because you are a
leader, you have to earn

How far would you go to save a member of your family s life? Would you be willing to forget
your beliefs, to risk everything to save a loved one? These were some of the questions that I was
thinking during the short story Runs Girl by Chinelo Okparanta. The story of a young girl who
becomes a runs girl, which is a Nigerian escort, to earn money to pay for her mother s medical
treatment. I found the story to be interesting, which I believe to be the most challenging about
short stories typically. Making the reader emotionally involved and invested in a story and
characters in only a small number of pages. Symbolism and foreshadowing was a major literary
tool in tell of this story. The theme of compassion is a major aspect of the story that influence
Ada and her mother s actions. The mother was once a fun loving, and even described as
gregarious lively sprit. Until her husband past away. She then flipped like a switch, and became
more reserved. The relationship between her and her daughter Ada changed too. It becomes more

A love could be more important that the one who love depending to the degree we put in it.
However, love mostly has a connotation which leads toward an entirely; this wholly that we can
either pursue or be with. But a question to our momentum could be who that wisdom that we could
love be.
Wisdom might be defined as a knowledge that we use as discernment to know what could be
good or bad. A wisdom which come from the adjective wise is also having some experience in
one particular subject. We could notice in this simple word wisdom disclose intrinsically a lexical
field of knowledge inside or outside its being which is abstract.
In addition, love an intangible which is wisdom could not reveal from the physic, the material. This
discipline can only target what we can not see which has a relation with the mind. Thus, love of the
wisdom commonly known as philosophy which display two abstract notions, one is a strong
feeling which push us to significantly bewitch what we love with great interest, the other as a
judgment or experience derivative of the knowledge which appeared not strong but discreet and
sober. This paradox is what philosophy is: a chase of wisdom, a passion concerning the study of
knowledge, a sane thirst of apprenticeship concerning the different experience of life. Knowing its
origin could not be necessarily mean grasp what philosophy is.

The sport with the Midas touch
Will football one day be played with balls made from gold? At its current rate, anything could

Advertising is a huge part of today s society and today, we are engulfed by a cosmetic world of
advertising, playing with our opinions like a child with their toys on Christmas; they can make us
think how they want us to think. Now this world has taken over the Beautiful Game too and it s
going full speed to the centre of it. In stadiums, advertising boards surround the pitch, using bright
animations to get crowd s attention; while on TV screens, companies have huge sponsorships with
the major competitions like major bank Barclays partnership with England s Premier League that
lasted fifteen years up until the current season. Naming rights, like the Emirates F.A Cup, a historic
100 year old trophy, now named after an Asian airline company create this image of history being

  • 2. The Lady Of Shalott Essay Among the multiple tempting Pre Raphaelites paintings, The Lady of Shalott of 1888 by John William Waterhouse (1849 1917) fascinates me the most. John William Waterhouse was a romantic artist that has a strong love with beautiful but tragic female figures. The Lady of Shalott as one of his best known painting illustrated part IV of great poet Tennyson s poem of a young Victorian woman s cursed life. The poem tells a mythical story of a beautiful woman who lives isolated on the island called Shalott, on a river which flows downstream from King Arthur s castle reaching the town Camelot. The lady of Shalott was imprisoned in the four grey towers and had never been seen by anyone, yet many have heard of her lovely singing. She lives upon an undisclosed curse that banned her from looking out of her window down to the Camelot. Therefore, day by day she weaves this colorful and magical netting in her tower and only gazes through the reflection of reality through her mirror. One day, upon seeing a gorgeous looking knight called Sir Lancelotpasses by the river, the lady of Shalott cannot resist but to turn around and take a glimpse at the man. With that one glance, the mirror cracks and the curse befalls her. The painting was the visualization of her last living moments toward her tragic death. She wears a snowy white rove and sings her last song as she sails down to the Camelot to chase after the knight. She sings until her blooded is frozen and her eyes darken, yet she ... • 3. Deep Allegory in Hawthorne s Young Goodman Brown Essay Deep Allegory in Young Goodman Brown Herman Melville in Hawthorne and His Mosses (The Literary World August 17, 24, 1850), comments on the deep allegory found within Nathaniel Hawthorne s tale, Young Goodman Brown. Young Goodman Brown ? You would of course suppose that it was a simple little tale, intended as a supplement to Goody Two Shoes. Whereas, it is deep as Dante; nor can you finish it, without addressing the author in his own words It is yours to penetrate, in every bosom, the deep mystery of sin. And with Young Goodman, too, in allegorical pursuit of his Puritan wife, you cry out in your anguish. . . . The use of allegory in his short stories is characteristic of Nathaniel Hawthorne, and the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Stanley T. Williams in Hawthorne s Puritan Mind states that the author was always perfecting his delicate craft of the symbol, of allegory (42). A. N. Kaul states : In an effort to apprehend and adequately reflect the new complexity of man s life, he [Hawthorne] molded the venerable in his case directly inherited allegorical method into the modern technique of symbolism (3). M. H. Abrams defines an allegory as a narrative, whether in prose or verse, in which the agents and actions, and sometimes the setting as well, are contrived by the author to make coherent sense on the literal, or primary, level of signification, and at the same time to signify a second, correlated order of signification (5). It is quite obvious from the names of the characters in Young Goodman Brown that their names are contrived to give a secondary signification. Goodman is on the primary level a simple husband who is following his curiosity about evil; on the level of secondary signification he is Everyman or the new Adam: R. W. B. Lewis in The Return into Rime: Hawthorne states: Finally, it was Hawthorne who saw in American experience the re creation of the story of Adam and who . . . exploited the active metaphor of the American as Adam before and during and after the Fall (72). Goodman responds in this way to the fellow traveler when the latter implicates the governor in devilish deeds: Can this be so! cried Goodman Brown, with a stare of amazement at his ... Even though many people practiced this doctrine Voltaire did not aside with it instead, he implanted doubts on the chances of achieving true happiness and real conformism. Voltaire s opinion was that one could not achieve true happiness in the real world but only experience it in an utopia. With the many hardships that Candide goes through ultimately leads him to abandon his attitude of optimism. Candide s misfortunes and adversities often contrasted with his optimistic view on life. Noticeably, Voltaire uses this satirical piece as a way to criticize this exaggerated optimism. This tale as stated by William Bottiglia, Has had a great effect on modern writers who confront mankind s inhumanity to fellow human beings by presenting the human condition absurdly, ironically, and humorously... (Bottiglia 112). The theme of criticism the best of all possible worlds is present through the whole story. Throughout the novel, Voltaire uses optimism satire to contrast with the catastrophes and human affliction in the story. When Candide finds a moribund and sick Pangloss, Candide asks who is at fault for his tragedy and Pangloss replies that The disease was a necessity in this the best of all possible worlds , for it was brought to Europe by Columbus men, who also brought chocolate and cochineal, two greater goods that well offset any negative effects of the disease, (Voltaire 17). The ending of a villanelle is the most important because it is the central message of the poem. The speaker is persuading the readers the importance to not die without a word. With the last stanza And you, my father, there on the sad height (Thomas 16). The readers can conclude that the speaker is a son standing next to the deathbed of his father. In order for an agreement to be upheld, there are two elements which must be established. First, it must then be identified that an offer was made by one party and a second party accepted this offer. Secondly, a contract comes into existence once the acceptance of an offer has been communicated to the offeror. Similar to that of Pharmaceutical Society, the offer is when Alex applied for the saxophonist position, comparable to when the customer picks the bottle of medicine from the shelves and places it on the cash register. This does not amount to acceptance, it is merely an offer of which the band has discretion to negotiate terms or reject the offer. Acceptance Acceptance is assessed on whether there was a meeting of the minds and that the acceptance corresponds with the offer. This is taken as an objective approach and can be concluded that acceptance has occurred where a person conducts themselves in such a way that a reasonable person would believe that they were assenting to the terms of the contract. PST had sent Alex a telegram informing her that she was the successful candidate, alongside having correspondence via mobile in which PST informed Alex to come to the rehearsal, which in accordance with the advertisement ensured Alex would receive an all expenses paid trip. Restraint is an aspect that is required today in order to have a successful government and society. Without limiting certain elements of culture, such as military and pollution, society would slowly decay. Society should incorporate both the idealistic ways of Lao tzu and the realistic ways of Machiavelli in restraint in order to maintain civility. The advice given by Lao tzu is idealistic and revolves around the idea of practicing nothing. First is the idea that civilians of this world are able to govern themselves; limits and restraint must not exisit. The government would still exist, but not present itself in the daily lives of the people; the ability to carry out actions more freely would increase. The government should be able to rule and the citizens not be aware of its existence. Freedom on all levels allows true happiness to prevail. People would be content in their own ways and not want to leave the country and travel. Ultimately, by practicing nothing, all the elements of the world would simply fall into place and maintain themselves. Sadly, the outcome of pure happiness would not prevail. The numbers found, would tell us how polluted the stream was and how much nutrients were in the water. Each chemical has a scale for telling what a good level is and what a bad level is. If an excess amount of nutrients was found in the water, algae could be formed. When algae is formed it blocks sunlight from shining into the water, which creates dead zones. This is called eutrophication. A dead zone is an area where there is no life. This can cause major problems like population issues and more. If the algae continues to grow in the river, the whole body of water can die out, and people as well as other organisms are very dependent on the Susquehanna. Other than the similar time period, these two representations of the Vietnam War differ drastically. The Sorrow of War, a novel written by Bao Ninh, follows a North Vietnamese solider named Kien during his years fighting for the communist regime and documenting his hardships before, during, and after the war. Full Metal Jacket is a movie that depicts the American side of the war in Vietnam , focusing on one group of Marine recruits and their journey to the frontlines. Both representations contain similar themes of mental illness, personal sufferings, and unfathomable wartime situations. Nevertheless, I believe that The Sorrow of War captures human emotion and turmoil more precisely than Full Metal Jacket does through the author s word choice and exemplary descriptions of his sorrows experienced due to the war. The Sorrow of War shows the Vietnam War from a communist s point of view; a perspective that is often overlooked and misunderstood by Americans. This literary work exemplifies the idea that all humans encompass feelings and emotions regardless of their political affiliation, citizenship, and/or ethnicity. However, the reality is that the principle of political equality of citizens coexists with the social hierarchy that has developed around the socio professional categories, the level of education and income, classes and etc. Because we consider democracy as the only right way of governing people it is important to understand what makes some participate and the others to stay away from the whole process. Phoenixes are mythical birds, often with flaming feathers, but by far, the most interesting quality of a phoenix is its death. When a phoenix dies, it burns up into a heap of ashes. Not in Our Stars, But in Ourselves Whose fault? / Whose but his own? is a question that has been raised many times in human history (Milton 3.96). Many authors and poets have tackled the question of why humanity is constantly tested and tempted to sin, and, further, whether humanity has the free will to decide its own fate. After the Reformation of the Catholic church that created Protestantism, the idea of predestination was very popular. Protestant ideology claimed that only a few people were destined to be saved or damned by God, and that only some people will be saved. This created a general anxiety about faith and free will in Renaissance England, leading many to question who was at fault when human beings sin. Two of the most well known epic poems of the Renaissance era are The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser and Paradise Lost by John Milton. Both poems feature characters that face trials and tribulations, and how the respective poems deal with the trails reveals different ideas about fate, free will, and the idea of being tested. Both poems use temptation relation to female bodies and sexual desire, diverse reactions to falling and failure, and prophecy that contribute to two different ideas about free will and the role of God in the lives of his creations. Female seduction and sexual temptation are featured both in The Faerie Queene and Paradise Lost, but are represented in different ways. Common decency is plagued by our desires. In Flannery O Connor s A Good Man Is Hard to Find, we follow a grandmother and her family, and we learn about her own selfish values. Throughout the story she acts in a manner that falls in contradiction to what she believes to be a lady and good. Right from the start we see that she will lie and sneak to get what she wants. Our purpose is to see which of the major brands of syrup is most soluble and for what reason. This is important to our daily lives because it makes us aware of what types of materials we are ingesting and this applies to our experiment by seeing which of the ingredients take longer to dissolve. Information known is all brands are known to dissolve in milk but they all use different ingredients and they will cause a difference in the time it takes to dissolve. New information that will be gained from this experiment is which ingredients inside chocolate syrup will take the longest to dissolve, from the type of sugars in it to the syrups. We expected the Nesquik to dissolve the fastest because it did not contain any high fructose corn syrupwhile the other brand of syrup did. • 50. Use Of Narrative Voice In Atonement Narrative voice and points of view are indispensable parts of storytelling. Explore the use of narrative voice employed by the authors of Atonement and A Room with a View. In the novel Atonement, the author Ian McEwan uses narrative voice to grasp the attention of the reader whilst alternating points of view to create a diverse plot. He does this through the novel being perceived as several narrators for us to then realise it s one voice. McEwan uses prolepsis to hint at future events which he uses to intrude the story. In the same way, this is also an evident theme in E.M Forster s a Room with a View. Similarly, to Atonement, A Room with a View has a thought provoking narrative viewpoint in the sense that it is a bildungsroman about Lucy Honeychurch. Forster writes in an omniscient tone, which means that the characters are dictated to us his narration and the character s dialogue; this debatably affects the reader s sympathy to the other characters in the play like Cecil Vyse. Likewise, it is evident that authorial intrusion creates a high level of authenticity to the story. In Atonement, it is evident that the author Ian McEwan is trying to highlight the characters inner mental state, he does this by using the literacy device of prolepsis. McEwan steps back from the original first person narrative to describe how Briony was struggling with the temptation to flounce from the room . He repeats this device throughout the novel, using metanarrative to build up tension. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
