Wizard Of Oz Archetypes
The classic fantasy The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a story written by L. Frank Baum, who suffered
from a heart condition. Since he was unable to participate in many activities as a teen he resulted in
writing, allowing him to escape the real world and live through his fantasies. Starting in Kansas and
moving into the Land of Oz it is the reoccurring patterns of symbolic and situational archetypes that
bring the story to life. Although originally written as a piece of children s literature, it is a story that
people of all ages love. Literature has the ability to take readers to another place better than the real
world. Expressive use of vivid colours throughout the Land of Oz, unfortunate situations that lead to
newfound friendships and Dorothy s purposeful journey allows readers to visualize how life would be
living in a childhood fantasy.
Firstly, the symbolism of colour plays a major role in expressing various emotions throughout the
story. In the beginning, Dorothy sees nothing but the great grey prairie on every side (Baum 3);
surround by grey Dorothy feels drained and unhappy. Kandinsky a Russian painter and art theorist
sates it is soundless and motionless... grey expresses a hopeless stillness the greyness of her home life
emphasizes how boring the real world can seem at times. In contrast, the Land of Oz is full of bright
vivid colours and beautiful sights (Baum 7) representing a dream world full of adventure and
excitement. As Dorothy arrives in Oz she is

They Things They Carried. Explication
Life in a Warzone
Reading the short story The Things they carried, by Tim O Brien, creates a mesmerizing image of a
war zone. It describes the tough war times for American soldiers fighting in the Vietnam War. The
story is a literary portrayal of the material and mental pressures on the soldiers, who strive to survive
physically and mentally in the war. The things they carried talks about how heavily equipped are
American Soldiers, and how a group of them carried numerous tools and weapons as war materials. It
presents the environment of Lieutenant Jimmy Cross and fellow soldiers. They used to be loaded with
survival goods and weapons all the time during Vietnam War. They carried all possible equipments

In his mindset Jimmy Cross loved Martha. Jimmy Cross would also carry a couple of letters from
Martha as a spiritual symbol of love. Although Jimmy Cross humped his love for Martha, paragraph 3,
they were not lovers. Jimmy Cross would think frequently about Martha as it would take Jimmy into a
fantasy world. These thoughts would ease his mind and gradually increases his love for Martha. With
time passing, thoughts about Martha became more significant in Jimmy Cross s mind and his feelings
also escalated. Jimmy Cross would also imagine sexual experiences with Martha such as in paragraph
5, Cross imagines to have touched her left knee. Martha became a remedy, a cure, or a spiritualized
gorgeous being for Jimmy Cross in the distressing environment of war. The crisp in Jimmy Cross s
imagination came in this story when Jimmy receives a pebble from Martha, as a good luck charm,
before Lavender s death. The pebble for Jimmy became like a materialized spiritual object. It reflected
all the love that Jimmy had for Martha. Paragraph 39 he carried the pebble in his mouth, turning it
with his tongue, tasting the sea salts and moisture. His mind wandered. He had difficulty keeping his
attention on the war. These lines give evidence that the pebble had gained immense substance in the
life of Jimmy Cross. It was actually that he had started worshipping

My Capstone will be the replacement of aging Microsoft...
My Capstone will be the replacement of aging Microsoft Windows XP business computers with newer
computers running Microsoft Windows 7. Although Windows 8.1 is currently available, I have chosen
to deploy Windows 7 for a myriad of reasons. Windows 7 has gained popularity and a reputation for
being a solid replacement for Windows XP.
I have worked (officially) in the IT field for over 4 years now, and have been involved in multiple
Windows 7 migration projects. I will use my previous experience, in addition to my newly developed
skills, to produce a successful plan for rolling out this operating system on a widespread basis.
In my experience, projects such as this are not planned very well. My goal is to make sure that every

Boeing also determined that the increased network security was a huge bonus as well.
Another excellent case study was the Windows 7 migration for Petroleum Development of Oman.
PDO determined they had 5000 full time workers and 30,000 contractors that would be affected. They
were finding that maintaining that many devices was becoming a burden. Modern technology, such as
Microsoft SCCM was not as readily available with their older operating systems.
In order for PDO to complete the migration, they determined they would need a major infrastructure
upgrade. This began with approximately 30% of their servers upgraded from Windows Server 2003 to
Windows Server 2008 R2. Once this initial phase was complete, they turned their focus to client
software.
PDO has a unique environment, with 300 line of business applications, including many custom built
applications and highly sophisticated software for reservoir simulation, well engineering, and
production chemistry. Initially, PDO was working towards migrating to , Windows Vista, but with the
release of Windows 7, it was determined to be a better fit for the business.
PDO engaged Microsoft services and consultants, reengineering applications as needed. Applications
were fully tested in a special lab using 3 levels:
Technical testing: Staff tested to see if the applications would install and run on Windows 7

How To Calculate The Molar Mass Of Sodium Phosphate...
There are many steps to prepare a quantitive solution. First you have to calculate the molar mass of
solution. Then you place the solution into 1000mL of water, making a 1M solution. After you make a
1M solution you change it to the designated amount, and change the molar mass, and the molar
solution. Finally you have the need molar solution all you have to change is the volume, and for that
you simply divide both the the mass and volume by the same number you need to obtain the

The significance of animal symbolisms in Life of Pi In the Yan Martel s Life of Pi , he told a story
about his survival at sea. It is a cruel and bloody story with zebra, hyena, orangutan and tiger. The
hyena killed zebra and orangutan. Tiger killed hyena. Actually, animals represented people: zebra was
a sailor, hyena was cook, orangutan was Pi s mother and tiger was Pi. Animal symbolisms is
significant in Life of Pi because it compares the differences and similarities between animals and
humans; it makes readers feel better; It reveals people s survival instincts. Pi s story which uses
animals as characters compares the differences and similarities between animals and humans. In the Pi

Who Is Free Will In Macbeth
TO WHAT EXTENT IS MACBETH RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MURDER OF KING DUNCAN
How much would one expect a manipulated, over ambitious, loyal Thane to be responsible for the
murder of his beloved King who gave him the title Thane of Glamis? In the 16th century, being
granted a title like the Thane brought great honour to your family. How can a brave and loyal knight,
who has been granted this honourable title take full responsibility to murdering his beloved king? This
essay will be discussing the aspects of how much the tragic hero, Macbeth, is responsible for the
murder of King Duncan. The main aspects that will be analyzed in this essay is the paradox, fate vs

It is just how life works and it has worked like that for many centuries. People are not always
responsible for their actions. Fate vs free will usually decides upon this. Fate can be described as
destiny or in a more realistic way, coincidence. Free will however is the action you intentionally do.
Macbeth s responsibility for the King s murder can be, to some extent can be the cause of fate vs free
will, which is a paradox which keeps reappearing in the play. The witches, who mysteriously crossed
paths with Macbeth and Banquo, was that fate or free will? That can be considered as fate because if
the witches had not crossed paths with Macbeth, he would not have known the prophecies thus putting
the idea that fate drove Macbeth into killing Duncan because if the witches had not told Macbeth he
would be king, Macbeth wouldn t have written a letter to Lady Macbeth, who will then manipulate
him into killing Duncan. These facts can prove that fate may be the cause of Duncan s death therefore
Macbeth wasn t entirely responsible for the murder of King Duncan. Although it was definitely
Macbeth who committed the murder, there are many aspects that drove him into killing King Duncan
but he wasn t entirely responsible for the whole

Politics And Religion By Gerard Hauser
Politics and religion have long been entangled in the United States. The United States has struggled
with the question of how to maintain an appropriate combination of religion and politics in the public
sphere for a long time. Gerard Hauser argues that public spheres are discursive spaces where society
deliberates about normative standards and even develops new frameworks for expressing and
evaluating social reality . Religion is part of the public sphere and has an influence in American
political life in affairs such as leadership, legislation and voter partisanship. Religious rhetoric plays
an important role in defining the boundaries of the political community and in setting the tone for
political discourse. American democracy owes its birth to the influence of a specific form of
Christianity: English Puritanism. The Pilgrims, laid the essential groundwork for America s
experiment in self government. Religion was in fact the primary reason for the northern settler s
immigration to the New World. These settlers known as Pilgrims because their journey had a religious
purpose . They sought to build Puritan communities, to live in America in their manner and pray to
God in freedom . The Pilgrims came to establish religious communities, but their beliefs called for
such communities to be instituted and administered by the consent of the governed. (Holloway,
Carson) As time went by, they began to constitute and frame laws, ordinances, acts and constitutions.

d) Resistance to Environmental Factors Composites display excellent resistance to the corrosive
effects of: Freeze thaw: because composites are not attacked by galvanic corrosion and have low water
absorption, they resist the destructive expansion of freezing water. Weathering and Ultra Violet Light:
FRP composite structures designed for weather exposure are normally fabricated with a surface layer
containing a pigmented gel coat or have an ultraviolet (UV) inhibitor included as an additive to the
composite matrix. Both methods provide protection to the underlying material by screening out UV
rays and minim Chemicals and Temperature: Composites do not rust or corrode and can be formulated
to provide long term resistance to nearly every chemical and temperature environment. Of particular
benefit, is composites ability to successfully withstand the normally destructive effects of de icing

Differences between Confucian and Buddhist Concept in Filial Piety
1. Background of Filial Piety in Chinese Society
Filial piety is a primary and comprehensive concept which plays a significant role in Chinese history.
The explanation of filial piety is to treat parents well in Er Ya(Su 2007,10)which is the earliest
monograph in semantic interpretation. Filial piety is not only the foundation and practical staring point
of all Chinese society relationships, but the root and essence of education and social norm as well. As
for the mainstream of Chinese traditional culture, no matter Buddhism or Confucianism, filial piety is
an important concept in both thoughts. The two schools both encourage children to show filial piety to

Tian Di Guan Jing mentioned that: one needs to repay parent s debt, all living beings debt, king s debt,
three jewel s debt (Su 2007). This combination constitutes the system of repaying debt in Buddhism.
Among the four types of debt, debt of parents has the closest relationship with us. In Buddhism
thought, love from mother is the most important, however, we can never repay this kind of selfless
love. That is to say, the essence of filial piety in Buddhism is repaying parents debt.
Compared with Buddhism, filial piety in Confucian thought is more closely related to society. There is
a famous assertion in Confucianism which is: self cultivation, family harmony, state governing and
world peace (Si Shu Wu Jing). Etiquette idea in Confucianism is used to maintain the primogeniture
system. The huge difference between Confucianism and Buddhism in that, in Buddhism, filial piety is
voluntary behavior and the essence of it is a kind of natural human feeling coming from the bottom of
one s heart without any utilitarian purpose. This is consistent with idea of equality in Buddhist
thought. However, in Confucianism, filial piety is regarded as a tool to maintain the seniority and
hierarchy in society which glosses over emotional

The Employment of The Supernatural
The supernaturalism is the core of any gothic novel; the authors generally employ elements of the
supernatural to elevate the tension and suspense of the story. The supernaturalism is the key for any
gothic mystery, it is an everlasting and a necessary gothic trope; however, the way of employing the
supernatural varied and took new forms throughout centuries. There are many techniques to employ
the gothic supernatural. Du Maurier s technique of the explained supernatural takes a new form ,and is
called the Disillusionment , which is defined by as the mismatch between fantasy and reality 44 . The
whole supernatural forces that occur in the novel are illusions, doubts, and expectations, rather than
presenting something supernatural and then revealing its natural explanation. In Rebecca, Daphne
explains the gothic feeling and the dark thoughts by revealing the reality of the hidden thing that
causes the supernatural feelings. For instance, Mrs. De Winter describes the odd, supernatural feeling
that she experienced when she discovers a boat house while walking near the beach with her husband:
It was damp in the cottage, damp and chill. Dark, and oppressive. I did not like it. I had no wish to
stay there, (R., P.123). When she continues to walk into the small cottage, she feels weird and restless.
She fights against unexplained supernatural feelings of dread as she opens a mysterious

The History Of Sexuality, By Michel Foucault
In the History of Sexuality Vol. 1, Michel Foucault writes the body as a constructed and manipulated
agent, the locus of sociopolitical discourse and power. To Foucault, the body cannot exist before the
law (that which holds and ascribes its meaning). Similarly, sexuality cannot free itself from relations
of power (Butler 1989:603). Indeed, the body is culturally contested; it is incapable of independence
from any particular structuralized narrative. The ubiquitous yet uncertain subject of sex, as Foucault
describes, is an imaginary point, the consequence of materiality fully invested with ideas (Butler
1989:603). He writes; Nothing in man not even his body is sufficiently stable to serve as the basis for
self recognition or for understanding other men (Foucault 1980:153). The culturally constructed body
then, asserts a multitude of identities. The body is molded by distinct regimes of life, broken down by
rhythms of work, rest, and holiday uprooted by cultural significant values, habits and moral laws
(Foucault 1980:153). The legality of the body within the context of transactional sex has been a
subject of constant debate, primarily limited to a severe binary whereby the focus on decriminalization
rest upon the idea of human agency and the victimization of the body. Central to these narratives is, of
course, the female form. On one end of the spectrum, anti prostitution activists argue that women
involved in the sex trade industry are but victims of an unjust

Criticism and Analysis of Puddn head Wilson
In American history, we have good authors, great authors and some bad. One of the most famous
authors and probably the greatest that everyone has heard of is Mark Twain. Twain was an American
author and humorist in American Literature. Twain was born in Florida, Missouri, on November 30,
1835. In his first writing, he adopted his pen name from a well known call of the man sounding the
river in shallow places.
In 1861 he went to Carson City, Nevada, as secretary to his brother. For two years he edited papers
and moved from place to place. In 1867 he visited France, Italy and Palestine. Twains two greatest
masterpieces, Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn were drawn from his childhood experiences and the
life on the Mississippi frontier. Mark Twain has a legacy as an American author because of his books
like Huckleberry Fin and Pudd nhead Wilson. He put his self in the American popular culture of
literature. Twains novels and stories are popular in the media. His work has been remade into comic
strips, children s films, and cartoons. His image and his words have also figured in commercial
advertising campaigns. He is one of the greatest.

Anthropogenic Climate Change
Anthropogenic Climate Change

May 21, 2012
An issue that is felt throughout the world is Anthropogenic Climate Change formally known as Global
Warming. This word wide problem is one that needs to be addressed immediately as well as long term.
Anthropogenic Climate Change is the rise of the earth s temperature caused by human activities. The
continuing rise in the earth s temperature will cause extreme change in our earth s ecosystems. The
predetermined course to our ecosystems relies on climate change and its effects on ecosystems and life
as we know it is at a vulnerable state. Anthropogenic Climate Change shifts relations with human life
and presents severe biodiversity in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The estimated cost is that of 1.8 billion dollars (Trouble in Store, 2009). The fact is at this point it is
just an estimation and the reality of the cost factor will not be accurate until the carbon capture
technology is commercially launched which, is years away (Gunther, 2011). The International Energy
Agency (IEA) reckons the world will need over 200 power plants equipped with Carbon Capture
Systems by 2030 to limit the rise in average global temperatures to about 3°C (Trouble in Store,
2009). People have been aware of the rise in the earth s temperature and its effects however, many
persuaded themselves that there was really no immediate danger as well as, there was nothing one
could do to mitigate the issue and felt higher authorities were responsible for outcomes and resolutions
(Wearts, 2011). On the contrary there is immediate danger and long term affect to our earth if our earth
s temperature continues to rise. Polar caps and glaciers will melt resulting in major changes in our
ecosystems and causing the sea level to rise (McKibben, 2009). Anthropogenic Climate Change has
caused the uprising of precipitation intensity and or dry spells, and wind patterns (Giorgi, Coppola,
Diffenbaugh, Gao, Mariotti amp; Shi, 2011). Precipitation intensity up rises due to the increased
atmospheric water holding volume. The increase is related to surface evaporation rates ultimately,

The Lone Ranger And Tonto Fistfight In Heaven, And The...
In Battle Royal , The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven , and The Things They Carried , all
three authors focus on the actions of the lead characters, and how the past reflects on their behavior
and decisions in the present. These three stories have several things in common: The protagonists are
haunted by someone or something, which causes their struggle with their self identity. To be specific,
the main characters are constantly troubled by a close one that they lost, and also by personal events,
which then results in them being confused and lost on who they should be and how they should
behave in society. Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison talks about a young, ginger colored man, who feels
contradicted on how he should act in a society where people of color are still oppressed, and at the
same time where the word equality is a sensitive expression. The protagonist, who is remained
nameless and invisible throughout the narrative, is the narrator of the whole story and he describes
that, He was an odd old guy, my grandfather, and I am told I take after him (Ellison 1142). This points
out that our young protagonist might have been a modest and timid person, because his grandfather
had been the meekest of men (1142). Just before reaching his last breathe, his grandfather confesses
about being a traitor and a spy in the enemy s country (1142). To the protagonist, It was as though he
had not died at all, his words caused so much anxiety (1143). His

Distinguishing Generation Gaps
Distinguishing generation gaps
There are several ways to make distinctions between generations. For example, names are given to
major groups and each generation sets its own trends and has its own cultural impact.
Language Use
Generations can be distinguished by the differences in their language use. The generation gap has
created a parallel gap in language that can be difficult to communicate across. This issue is one visible
throughout society, creating complications within day to day communication at home, in the work
place, and within schools. As new generations seek to define themselves as something apart from the
old, they adopt new lingo and slang, allowing a generation to create a sense of division from the
previous one. This is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It s a pity that we don t have enough communication now. But I think the most terrible thing is not this
but our ignorance of communicating. And I can take our daily life for instance. On the one hand, many
parents try to provide good living environment for their children. But they only want their children to
study well and seldom want to know what they re thinking about. On the other hand, the children are
always complaining about their parents but neither do they want to understand their parents.
Do you think communicating between generations is difficult? I don t think so. Remember how you
made your first friend? Open your mouth the strangers will become friends. Use your tongue we ll
know each other better. And in this way the generation gap can be bridged, I am sure. Just like it was
sung in an old song: Open your heartland the key is in your hand.
Understanding Generation Gap
Generation gap is nothing but certain psychological and emotional gap between parents or elder
people and the younger ones. Bulging generation gap creates misunderstanding and lack of attachment
between the parents and children. The success of parenting lies in how effectively they avoid the
generation gap or ignore the differences with kids.
Generation gap is the result of the fast paced development of the society. In earlier times two or three
generations live in the same lifestyle and environments as the development was so

Insight Video Analysis
The Inupiaq people have the same ideology as many other north American tribes when it comes to the
intertwined relationship with nature and the supernatural. As mention in the insight videos, the Inupiaq
think of nature as a living person that has a soul, therefor they treat nature with respect and try to not
harm it. In the insight video they say that they believe in that nature might present itself as different
object and or sometimes an actual person. Moreover, they believe that animals have magical
(supernatural) powers and that they can hear and understand human words, they also believe that
every animal has a human form and you can see it only when the animal wants you to see their human
form. This can explain the bond that is created ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This was the goal of the video game for people to understand their heritage and learn about their
beliefs. I do believe that the game did a good job of communicating the values mention in the insight
videos because every challenge that Nuna and the fox faced had a moral or reason that they were
facing it in that moment. An example would be when Nuna and the fox forgot to respect the little
mouse, they had to faced the big mouse and get out of his cave afterwards, the little mouse comes to
them when they are canoeing away and they lift of the mouse out of the water and place him in their
canoe showing that they learned their lesson to respect every animal even a mouse. In the video, he
says that you only use animals for food you don t mess with them and that is a key element about their
way of life. Another example of how the game presented the Inupiaq s values of having a special
relationship with nature other than Nuna s and the fox relationship is by demonstrating that you can
overcome all of the obstacles in the game without harming or killing any animals or plants (other than
manslayer since he represented greed and he killed the fox.) Throughout their journey Nuna and the
fox would run into the owl man who would tell them stories and why things were happening, this
concept is apart of the Inupiaq values of sharing stories. Therefore, I think that the game did a good
job in communicating with the player the Inupiat s values seen in the insight

Ethical Issues In Saving Private Ryan

Instructor: Dr. Sara Rogers
Saving Private Ryan is a film staged within World War II, during which an incredible mission to locate
and bring home Private Ryan is launched in behind enemy lines within Europe. The return of Private
Ryan is hoped to increase moral in the homeland and benefit combat efforts. Captain Miller is in
charge of the reluctant team tasked with the rescue mission of Private Ryan, not knowing where he is
at or if he is even alive. The company finally finds Private Ryan even after several enemy encounters
and finding another soldier named Private Ryan . Once Private Ryan is located they give him the news
that his three brothers were killed while fighting in the war. Private Ryan chooses not to go home and

His fear overcame him and he froze up resulting in failing to accomplish his duty as a soldier. Once
again, using deontological ethics, if the presence of a good will is what makes an action morally good,
regardless of its consequence (Rosenstand 2013, page 284). So, even though the Corporal was not able
to engage the enemy due to his fear overcoming him, he is still admirable for attempting to do the
right thing. Although the film Saving Private Ryan can be viewed through several moral views, overall
the film can be best viewed through the deontological ethics. The majority of the film is based off of
someone intending to do the right thing even when the consequences were high. The company had
duties to uphold as soldiers and they did what they had to in order to fulfill them. According to Kant,
humans usually know what they ought to do, and that is almost always the opposite of what they want
to do (Rosenstand 2013, page 285).

Analyzing Virginia Derryberry s Bonaventure Painting
While there are many beautiful and thought provoking works of art to choose from,
Bonaventure, painted by Virginia Derryberry, piqued my interest with its vibrant color and life.
Honestly, I have not visited many museums, but Virginia s interpretation of Savannah s famous
Bonaventure cemetery leaves me wanting to visit more museums. While browsing the museum there
were few that really captured my attention and mesmerized me. I will take this opportunity to
describe, analyze, interpret, and judge Virginia s Bonaventure.
Firstly, I will describe in detail Virginia Derryberry s art piece. Bonaventure is an oil painting on
canvas and is the largest painting in a series she painted in 1992. Virginia was living in Savannah and

The flowers are pivotal to the painting as they serve many purposes. One of their purposes is to
balance out the entirety of the piece. The flowers are also complementary colors that makes the piece
vibrant and harmonious. The placement and color draw the viewers eyes, using line of sight, first to
the flowers, then to the sculptures. Bonaventure is also full of curved lines, most prominently in the
flowers and swan, which gives a very soothing affect, leaving the viewer relaxed. Virginia used
several hues and values in the entire painting to create depth and intensity in the painting, giving it
vibrant coloring. This gives the painting a very light feeling, contrasting with the cemetery setting.
Although Bonaventure is a two dimensional piece of art,
Virginia uses space and placement to give the appearance of three dimensions. She overlaps objects
several times, such as flowers in front of a pedestal, or a figure in front of trees. Techniques such as
this creates the illusion of a three dimensional image. To add to the illusion, she introduces light with
shading and shadow to create the effect of a brightly shinning sun.
Next I will use my analysis of Bonaventure to interpret her piece. Virginia does a

This album is fun not only because the songs have great, mostly upbeat rhythm but also because he

Sarah Russell s voice (somewhat reminiscent of Ellie Goulding) melds well with Adam Young s. It s
just a fun love song. Alas, this is followed by probably my least favorite song on the album,
Unbelievable. This should be a fun nostalgic song looking back to the childhood of their generation. It
comes off as bit dull song which list of things without any clever lyrics to tie it together. A clever rap

It is Unbelievable. Now, admittedly, someone that had their shared experiences could find forgiveness
in the list with their own nostalgic memories. Bird with a Broken Wind stands in stark contrast to the
bubble gum pop of Unbelievable, taking on those who see the world primarily fraught with danger and
loss. Clearly this is someone whose experience have left them with scared and broken where the song

Research Paper On Wigwam Hotel
The Wigwam motel
A hint of yore, a touch of modern era and the nostalgic atmosphere at Wigwam motel, San Bernardino,
California makes it the perfect stop on route 66 for families, motorists and tourists alike. Built in 1947
at the start of auto camping craze, to aid locals and tourists that chose to travel via roads in automotive

Wigwam motel earned its name from the peculiar shape of its guest rooms. The tipi structure of each

Cool Hand Luke By Stuart Rosenberg
Those inclined to think about religious matters embrace distinctly different images of God such as in
the film Cool Hand Luke Directed by: Stuart Rosenberg, a central component to making the film what
it is, is the subtle use of religious imagery. The way Luke Jackson is presented as a character,
embodies this very likeness to Jesus through his actions, speech and posture. The way Luke starts a
bond with the other prisoners is through a boxing match and a poker game. During the boxing match,
Luke gets beaten up by his soon to be right hand Dragline. While playing poker, he wins the game by
bluffing a hand worth nothing and comments that sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand and also
during the poker game is when he attained his nick name Cool Hand Luke . During his sentence in
jail, Luke s family came to visit him so that he could say good bye to his mother because she was not
breathing to well on the account that she smoked a lot and developed this horrible cough in which she
and her family realized that she might not last until Luke got out of jail. After his mother visits, Luke
becomes more optimistic about his situation and because of this, the other prisoners begin to idolize
him. This is where we start receiving subtle images of Jesus and the 12 disciples because of the way
that they all began to follow him and be his support group. Such as the disciples were to Jesus. One
day while working on the road to Luke s leadership is truly shown, he leads the group

Increasing the Proportion of Adults at a Healthy Weight
As the world is changing dramatically in terms of the technology that was available a couple of
decades ago, so are the health challenges and threats that we are facing. In the 1980s, the major public
health problems were related to the wide spread presence of infectious diseases. However, in today s
world, the focus has shifted from infectious diseases to chronic diseases. As we dig deeper into
understanding the etiology of the chronic diseases, we notice that obesity has an association with a lot
of them.
To reverse this trend, the Healthy People 2020 has set Increasing the Proportion of Adults at a Healthy
Weight as one of its objectives. Some of the factors that are believed to effect obesity and overweight
are physical activity status and eating healthy. Here, we will be looking at two studies that have tried
to understand people s beliefs and motivation to address this objective.
The first of the two studies was on the association of social support and Body Mass Index (BMI), on
African American women from rural Deep South, conducted by Johnson ER et al. The two
interventions that were looked up at in this study are healthy eating, and exercising. The second study
was about the perceived neighborhood attributes and BMI, among 12

Comparing Roosevelt s Next, And The New Nationalism
I argue that when it comes to developing our capabilities, Roosevelt s argument that the main purpose
for freedom is to benefit the community is the most viable because it helps maintain democratic
processes, while also providing a higher quality of life for all. While Sen and Roosevelt are similar
because they both believe that a society can only develop if the people are given equal opportunity to
develop their capabilities, they differ when it comes to the purpose of fulfilling those capabilities. In
this essay, I will outline Sen s argument as to why development should be viewed in terms of
maximizing our freedoms to achieve our desired lives, in contrast to Roosevelt s argument. Then, I
will advance my own argument as to why Roosevelt s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
At first, Sen s argument seems appealing because we are all able to keep the fruits of our labor, and
decide what kind of life we want to live. This fits in line with man s natural tendencies toward
selfishness, and it seems that it would be difficult to develop one s capabilities simply for the case of
the commonwealth, and not for oneself. As naturally self interested beings, we would always want to
develop all of our capabilities so that we may live the lives we have reason to desire. However, only
using our freedom for self interested motives leads to numerous issues. For example, one of the most
important aspects of a democracy is exercising one s right to vote; however, if one is only concerned
with oneself, they will vote in a way that only them, and perhaps other members of one s social class,
will benefit the most. Thus, people could end up voting for a leader who plans to make them, and
others like them, wealthier by keeping wealth within a small percentage of the population. Not only
does this hinder development as Sen sees it, but it also has many negative implications for a society;
for example, it may lead to higher levels of poverty, crime, unrest, dissatisfaction, and eventually lead
to civil tension (all of which are unfreedoms). Similarly, some members of the community may have
no interest in politics, or may think they do not pertain

Analyzing the Surprise Ending in Descartes Discourse on...
Surprise Ending in Descartes In the book Discourses on the Method and the Meditations, author Rene
Descartes famously questions the existence of humanity. His most famous quotation, the one for
whom he is most remembered is I think therefore I am (Descartes 11). According to this idea, so long
as a being has the ability to think then they existed. Animals have brains and therefore they must exist.
In order to truly, exist, to be a thinking entity, a person or organism must utilize the ability granted to
them by their mind. This is the focus of much of this text, the nature of existence and the line between
what is true and what we only imagine or perceive to be true. For the majority of the text, the
philosopher asks questions in trying to formulate his own identity and indeed whether or not he
existed as all. It would be assumed that the end of the book would be a conclusion of this internal
dialogue where Descartes definitively states his position on human existence. However, Descartes
instead devotes the end of the text to a wholly new concept: namely he applies the question of
existence to a being above humanity. At the end of the text, instead of continuing on with these
questions Descartes instead discusses the idea of God and whether or not He exists. At the time of the
Royal Society which Descartes was a member of, the researchers and philosophers were trying to
understand everything about the world, something which actually is impossible to do. Renee Descartes

Analysis of The First Film with Basic Sounds
1. Introduction
Hearing is believing , as the potential motto of all sound practitioners inteprets, sound has played a
great part in our daily life, so as in the world of film. The first film with basic sound showed up in the
year of 1900 in Paris. Though the technique is quite juvenile, it is indeed a breakthrough in the film
history. The first film with synchronous sound, which is actually the real sound film as we recognized,
is The light of New York published at 1928 by the Vitaphone Corporation (Griffith 1961). This can be
seen as a leap in the history of film industry. Film has become increasingly prosperous since then. In
the meantime, the sound effect of films has become more and more mature and sophisticated.
The film Se7en, first being put on screen in 1995, made a clear manifestation of the seven deadly sins
according to the Christianity, arousing audiences introspection of their sense of morality, and their
consideration of the concept of justice and the meaning of life. As a profound movie, Se7en s sound
effect is exceptional too. This paper will examine some of the sounds that the film uses, and analyze

Telecommuting Simulation
Recently there has been a growing request for options to telework/telecommute in various departments
within the company. I recommend the Human Resource department adopt a policy that will include
procedures for selection criteria, approval of planned schedule, work, or project, and managerial
oversight. To meet the needs of our employees we recognize having more flexibility in work schedules
will alleviate work and family conflict by adopting a policy around telecommuting (Pynes, 2014, pg
265). Having a formal policy in place will minimize any misuse of this perceived benefit and will
ensure all requests are considered fairly.
Telecommuting for our agency will be defined as an employee is working away from the office for
one or more days within a given week (Managing pg. 9). Employees will be permitted to work from
home or elsewhere if they prefer. By allowing telecommuting we are reducing the amount of travel

Equipped with razor sharp propeller and the ability to fly thousands of feet above the ground, drones
have caused problems in the past and still are a risk to the general health of the public. Authors Rocci
Luppicini and Arthur So write that safety (21.24%) and law and regulation (25.66%) are the most
frequently cited concerns in connection with commercial drone use. Once drones create the sense that
lives are threatened when they are operating within a society, the immediate concern is drone safety
(p. 111). Although not the biggest concern, safety is still thought to be one of the bigger problems in
regards to drones and it is a top priority that this issue is resolved. Firstly, it is not the case that drones
are just death traps flying over our heads and it is certainly not the case that they are just going to fall
on our heads; however, there are still many possible scenarios where drones can jeopardize our safety.
Companies like DJI and GoPro are constantly working on making their drones better and safer but
there is still room for human error and drones, like with all machines, can never be a hundred percent
safe. One concern with drone safety is that they often cause a nuisance for aircrafts and air traffic
controllers when the people operating the drones fly them too high. There have been several instances

The United States has struggled with the question of how to maintain an appropriate combination of religion and politics in the public sphere for a long time. Gerard Hauser argues that public spheres are discursive spaces where society deliberates about normative standards and even develops new frameworks for expressing and evaluating social reality . Religion is part of the public sphere and has an influence in American political life in affairs such as leadership, legislation and voter partisanship. Religious rhetoric plays an important role in defining the boundaries of the political community and in setting the tone for political discourse. American democracy owes its birth to the influence of a specific form of Christianity: English Puritanism. The Pilgrims, laid the essential groundwork for America s experiment in self government. Religion was in fact the primary reason for the northern settler s immigration to the New World. These settlers known as Pilgrims because their journey had a religious purpose . They sought to build Puritan communities, to live in America in their manner and pray to God in freedom . • 18. The History Of Sexuality, By Michel Foucault In the History of Sexuality Vol. 1, Michel Foucault writes the body as a constructed and manipulated agent, the locus of sociopolitical discourse and power. To Foucault, the body cannot exist before the law (that which holds and ascribes its meaning). Similarly, sexuality cannot free itself from relations of power (Butler 1989:603). Indeed, the body is culturally contested; it is incapable of independence from any particular structuralized narrative. The ubiquitous yet uncertain subject of sex, as Foucault describes, is an imaginary point, the consequence of materiality fully invested with ideas (Butler 1989:603). He writes; Nothing in man not even his body is sufficiently stable to serve as the basis for self recognition or for understanding other men (Foucault 1980:153). The culturally constructed body then, asserts a multitude of identities. The body is molded by distinct regimes of life, broken down by rhythms of work, rest, and holiday uprooted by cultural significant values, habits and moral laws (Foucault 1980:153). The legality of the body within the context of transactional sex has been a subject of constant debate, primarily limited to a severe binary whereby the focus on decriminalization rest upon the idea of human agency and the victimization of the body. Central to these narratives is, of course, the female form. In Battle Royal , The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven , and The Things They Carried , all three authors focus on the actions of the lead characters, and how the past reflects on their behavior and decisions in the present. These three stories have several things in common: The protagonists are haunted by someone or something, which causes their struggle with their self identity. To be specific, the main characters are constantly troubled by a close one that they lost, and also by personal events, which then results in them being confused and lost on who they should be and how they should behave in society. Battle Royal by Ralph Ellison talks about a young, ginger colored man, who feels contradicted on how he should act in a society where people of color are still oppressed, and at the same time where the word equality is a sensitive expression. The protagonist, who is remained nameless and invisible throughout the narrative, is the narrator of the whole story and he describes that, He was an odd old guy, my grandfather, and I am told I take after him (Ellison 1142). This points out that our young protagonist might have been a modest and timid person, because his grandfather had been the meekest of men (1142). Sarah Russell s voice (somewhat reminiscent of Ellie Goulding) melds well with Adam Young s. It s just a fun love song. Alas, this is followed by probably my least favorite song on the album, Unbelievable. This should be a fun nostalgic song looking back to the childhood of their generation. It comes off as bit dull song which list of things without any clever lyrics to tie it together. A clever rap with good transitions could hav3e worked with what is, essentially, a long list. This just doesn t work. It is Unbelievable. Now, admittedly, someone that had their shared experiences could find forgiveness in the list with their own nostalgic memories. Bird with a Broken Wind stands in stark contrast to the bubble gum pop of Unbelievable, taking on those who see the world primarily fraught with danger and loss. Clearly this is someone whose experience have left them with scared and broken where the song grapples with how you live in the wake of those experiences: It feels like I m a lone survivor/Forgotten in a dark and deadly world/And on my own/I walk alone/To see the sun again/I d give anything/But life demands a final chapter/A story we all must leave behind/It s do or die/And this is mine/The anthem of a bird with a broken ... • 30. Cool Hand Luke By Stuart Rosenberg Those inclined to think about religious matters embrace distinctly different images of God such as in the film Cool Hand Luke Directed by: Stuart Rosenberg, a central component to making the film what it is, is the subtle use of religious imagery. The way Luke Jackson is presented as a character, embodies this very likeness to Jesus through his actions, speech and posture. The way Luke starts a bond with the other prisoners is through a boxing match and a poker game. During the boxing match, Luke gets beaten up by his soon to be right hand Dragline. While playing poker, he wins the game by bluffing a hand worth nothing and comments that sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand and also during the poker game is when he attained his nick name Cool Hand Luke . During his sentence in jail, Luke s family came to visit him so that he could say good bye to his mother because she was not breathing to well on the account that she smoked a lot and developed this horrible cough in which she and her family realized that she might not last until Luke got out of jail. After his mother visits, Luke becomes more optimistic about his situation and because of this, the other prisoners begin to idolize him. This is where we start receiving subtle images of Jesus and the 12 disciples because of the way that they all began to follow him and be his support group. Such as the disciples were to Jesus. One day while working on the road to Luke s leadership is truly shown, he leads the group ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the 1980s, the major public health problems were related to the wide spread presence of infectious diseases. However, in today s world, the focus has shifted from infectious diseases to chronic diseases. As we dig deeper into understanding the etiology of the chronic diseases, we notice that obesity has an association with a lot of them. To reverse this trend, the Healthy People 2020 has set Increasing the Proportion of Adults at a Healthy Weight as one of its objectives. Some of the factors that are believed to effect obesity and overweight are physical activity status and eating healthy. Here, we will be looking at two studies that have tried to understand people s beliefs and motivation to address this objective. The first of the two studies was on the association of social support and Body Mass Index (BMI), on African American women from rural Deep South, conducted by Johnson ER et al. The two interventions that were looked up at in this study are healthy eating, and exercising. The second study was about the perceived neighborhood attributes and BMI, among 12 ... • 32. Comparing Roosevelt s Next, And The New Nationalism I argue that when it comes to developing our capabilities, Roosevelt s argument that the main purpose for freedom is to benefit the community is the most viable because it helps maintain democratic processes, while also providing a higher quality of life for all. While Sen and Roosevelt are similar because they both believe that a society can only develop if the people are given equal opportunity to develop their capabilities, they differ when it comes to the purpose of fulfilling those capabilities. In this essay, I will outline Sen s argument as to why development should be viewed in terms of maximizing our freedoms to achieve our desired lives, in contrast to Roosevelt s argument. Then, I will advance my own argument as to why Roosevelt s ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... At first, Sen s argument seems appealing because we are all able to keep the fruits of our labor, and decide what kind of life we want to live. This fits in line with man s natural tendencies toward selfishness, and it seems that it would be difficult to develop one s capabilities simply for the case of the commonwealth, and not for oneself. As naturally self interested beings, we would always want to develop all of our capabilities so that we may live the lives we have reason to desire. However, only using our freedom for self interested motives leads to numerous issues. For example, one of the most important aspects of a democracy is exercising one s right to vote; however, if one is only concerned with oneself, they will vote in a way that only them, and perhaps other members of one s social class, will benefit the most. Thus, people could end up voting for a leader who plans to make them, and others like them, wealthier by keeping wealth within a small percentage of the population. Not only does this hinder development as Sen sees it, but it also has many negative implications for a society; for example, it may lead to higher levels of poverty, crime, unrest, dissatisfaction, and eventually lead to civil tension (all of which are unfreedoms). Similarly, some members of the community may have no interest in politics, or may think they do not pertain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 35. Analyzing the Surprise Ending in Descartes Discourse on... Surprise Ending in Descartes In the book Discourses on the Method and the Meditations, author Rene Descartes famously questions the existence of humanity. His most famous quotation, the one for whom he is most remembered is I think therefore I am (Descartes 11). According to this idea, so long as a being has the ability to think then they existed. Animals have brains and therefore they must exist. In order to truly, exist, to be a thinking entity, a person or organism must utilize the ability granted to them by their mind. This is the focus of much of this text, the nature of existence and the line between what is true and what we only imagine or perceive to be true. For the majority of the text, the philosopher asks questions in trying to formulate his own identity and indeed whether or not he existed as all. It would be assumed that the end of the book would be a conclusion of this internal dialogue where Descartes definitively states his position on human existence. However, Descartes instead devotes the end of the text to a wholly new concept: namely he applies the question of existence to a being above humanity. At the end of the text, instead of continuing on with these questions Descartes instead discusses the idea of God and whether or not He exists. At the time of the Royal Society which Descartes was a member of, the researchers and philosophers were trying to understand everything about the world, something which actually is impossible to do. Introduction Hearing is believing , as the potential motto of all sound practitioners inteprets, sound has played a great part in our daily life, so as in the world of film. The first film with basic sound showed up in the year of 1900 in Paris. Though the technique is quite juvenile, it is indeed a breakthrough in the film history. The first film with synchronous sound, which is actually the real sound film as we recognized, is The light of New York published at 1928 by the Vitaphone Corporation (Griffith 1961). This can be seen as a leap in the history of film industry. Film has become increasingly prosperous since then. In the meantime, the sound effect of films has become more and more mature and sophisticated. The film Se7en, first being put on screen in 1995, made a clear manifestation of the seven deadly sins according to the Christianity, arousing audiences introspection of their sense of morality, and their consideration of the concept of justice and the meaning of life. As a profound movie, Se7en s sound effect is exceptional too. This paper will examine some of the sounds that the film uses, and analyze the effect of the utilization of them. 2. I recommend the Human Resource department adopt a policy that will include procedures for selection criteria, approval of planned schedule, work, or project, and managerial oversight. To meet the needs of our employees we recognize having more flexibility in work schedules will alleviate work and family conflict by adopting a policy around telecommuting (Pynes, 2014, pg 265). Having a formal policy in place will minimize any misuse of this perceived benefit and will ensure all requests are considered fairly. Telecommuting for our agency will be defined as an employee is working away from the office for one or more days within a given week (Managing pg. 9). Once drones create the sense that lives are threatened when they are operating within a society, the immediate concern is drone safety (p. 111). Although not the biggest concern, safety is still thought to be one of the bigger problems in regards to drones and it is a top priority that this issue is resolved. Firstly, it is not the case that drones are just death traps flying over our heads and it is certainly not the case that they are just going to fall on our heads; however, there are still many possible scenarios where drones can jeopardize our safety. Companies like DJI and GoPro are constantly working on making their drones better and safer but there is still room for human error and drones, like with all machines, can never be a hundred percent safe.
