Witches, Sorcerers, And Shamans
Witches, sorcerers, and shamans are all different terms used to describe persons associated with
other worldly powers. Cautionary tales have been written about them as far back as the Old
Testament and in Homer s Odyssey. While almost every human culture has possessed the theory of
a witch, the most well known witch trials are the ones from the late 15th century to the late 17th
century in Europe. Many aspects of European life, such as art and politics, were splitting away
from the Church. Even on the cusp of a scientific revolution, the belief in witches and the
supernatural did not disappear. In this paper, I will argue that although there is no clear consensus
about what exactly defines a witch , scholars agree that witch trials were... Show more content on

The second article reviewed, Anthropological and Historical Approaches to Witchcraft: Potential for
New Collaboration?, was written by British historian Ronald Hutton in the early 21st Century. In
his writings, he discusses how different professionals, such as historians, sociologists, and
anthropologists, have all taken different approaches when studying witchcraft. He proposes setting
a model for witchcraft and using a set model to study witches and magic across the globe. He argues
that the studies done have looked at magic and witches from too narrow a lens. Hutton suggests
comparing two different societies that have had prominent histories with witches, such as European
and African witchcraft, and comparing them against one another. Hutton suggests that these two
groups have a very different history, but witchcraft reflected struggles common to all societies.
Another article discusses the domino effect of the weather and it s impact on the agricultural
economy of the time and how this explains the rise in witch trials in early modern Europe.
Witchcraft, Weather, and Economic Growth in Renaissance Europe by Emily Oster in 2004, takes
an economical approach on witchcraft and attributes the rise in prosecutions as a model of
scapegoating provoked by the deteriorating economy at the time. Oster presents findings indicating
that if the average temperature of the decade was below that of the previous decade, a

Summary Of The Movie Argo
The movie Argo is a visual production of an event called the Iranian Hostage Crisis that
happened in the 1980 s. The Iranian Hostage Crisis happened when the U.S decided to take one
of Iran s previous Shah and treat him for cancer. This led to many Iranian people storming the
U.S embassy, and taking over 60 hostages. These hostages were held for 444 days before being
released. Argo was based on a rescue mission called The Canadian Caper in which six americans
escaped capture and hid in the Canadian residence. There were many discrepancies between the
movie and the events, one of the most political being the undermining role of Canada and the fact
that they left out many people that contributed greatly in the efforts of saving the hostages. John
Sheardown was the former first secretary at the Canadian Embassy at the time of the Iranian
revolution. Him and his wife Zena sheltered four of the six escapees, but were left out of Argo,
the movie. In the film, all six of them hid in the Canadian Ambassador Taylor s residence and
stayed there the entire length. In history though, the escapees got shelter in the Swedish Embassy
as well as the British Embassy, and then for the rest of their stay relocated to the Canadian
Embassy and Sheardown s residence. John hosted the Americans for 79 days, and was said to be
almost like a father figure to them someone they could go to in times of fear. Sheardown and his
wife won awards for their efforts in aiding the rescue. The fact that

Literary Analysis Of Aftermath On Blackboard By Longfellow
This poem was interesting because it so short and everyone can relate to it. The speaker of this
poem eats the plums someone else was saving. The speaker never says who he/she was talking to,
which makes me question who the speaker was talking to. He/she could be talking to his/her
spouse, significant other, friend, etc. Also the plums could be a metaphor, sweet, delicious, fresh,
for sexual activity, temptation, or love.
Aftermath on Blackboard
This poem is about how bare the land is after it being harvest, hence the title Aftermath. Longfellow
wrote this poem focusing on nature and the changing of the seasons, summer to winter. He
describes summer as having sweet, new grass with flowers while the winter has tangled tufts from
marsh.
Grass on Blackboard This poem is about how nature, grass growing, has to restore itself and cover
up the destruction that the humans left. The speaker lists the battlefields to show how nature covers
up a disaster the humans made. Humans usually forget that the battles actually happen and they end
up forgetting about it, then it keeps happening after that.
Upon Julia s Clothes on Blackboard This poem describes how Julia has fancy taste in clothes and
how the speaker likes how Julia looks in them. The reader learns nothing about Julia, including
what she is wearing. The only thing readers know about Julia is how she looks in silk, describing
how it flows , its liquefaction , its vibration, and its glittering.

Recording Food Intake For Three Days Essay
Making sure nutritional needs become a part of any lifestyle requires understanding exactly what
the body needs to obtain and maintain optimal health. The recording food intake for three days
provides many areas of nutrition that I am more aware of that before; this includes protein,
carbohydrate, lipid, and fiber intake needs. Meeting the nutritional needs of the human body helps
to ensure a healthy lifestyle that is free of disease and illness.
Intake of Protein, Carbohydrates, and Lipids
The 3 days diet from the iProfile data shows the majority of protein intake from meats, such as
chicken and tuna. The data shows that protein is a nutrient in nearly every food source but is lower
than four grams if it is not a meat product. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Adding more servings of whole wheat grains, such as brown rice will assist in raising both the
fiber and carbohydrate intake as well.
The right combinations of food help to guarantee that the food an individual consumes is complete
in its nutritional content of proteins, such as combining vegetables and grains that separately have
incomplete proteins but together provide complete proteins (Grosvenor Smolin, 2012). Out of the
20 amino acids the human body needs, only 11 of those are produced in the liver. The remaining
amino acids must come from protein sources. If the consumption of grain and vegetables continues
to occur together complete protein will continue to be part of a healthy diet.
Macronutrient Intake Ranges
To maintain optimal health through a balanced diet it is important to keep the intake of
macronutrients within the recommended ranges. The effects of eating too many macronutrients or
not enough can cause under nourishment or over nourishment. Over nutrition occurs when long term
human energy intake exceeds energy expended on basal metabolism, digestion, work and leisure
(Huffman, Huffman, Rickertsen, Tegene, 2010, p. 5). Over nutrition of any nutrient in some
instances can create toxicity in the human body that may result in future morbidity. The
macronutrient intake during the 3 day diet ranges both inside and outside of the

A Brief Look at Pop Culture
What is pop culture? Wikipedia defines it as, the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes,
images, and other phenomena that are within the mainstream of a given culture , at a given time.
Like all things, the pop culture of a civilization grows and changes with the passage of time and
important events. However, past events often can influence pop culture of the future, as it
determines what a society may deem an important upcoming event to adapt to. Thusly, it is
possible to see links in a community from two different time periods that may seem opposites from
first glance. This is how a meaningful time period, like the 1970s, influenced parts of society like
music, cinema, and education, in society today.
While the era of disco was not a lengthy one, it managed to define an entire decade, creating an
image that is ever present in the mind of today s youth when imagining the 1970s. Disco started as
a small congregation of the minorities of society: African Americans, gays, psychedelics, and others
in clubs in areas like New York City and Philadelphia. It was originally the music of counterculture,
or an undercurrent of differing ideals than those of mainstream society. However, this music style
was adopted by other groups, and by the late 1970s, was the foundation of most popular music of
the time. It didn t remain that way for long, though; on July 12, 1979, a massive anti disco rally
gathered in the baseball stadium of the Chicago White Sox, chanting disco

The World Of Sports Arenas
Introduction
In the world of sports arenas there is one that stands as a pivotal high point above almost all other
stadiums. The University of Southern California s mammoth of a stadium, the Los Angeles
Memorial Coliseum is one of the biggest sports stadiums in college football, and has been a
standard by which others are judge. Being declared a land mark by the state of California after
nearly 80 years of use, this structure has had many different uses other than its current purpose of
housing one of the most dominate teams in college football, the Trojans. Since its opening day the
stadium has set world record in attendance and then beaten the same records hosting some of the
most famous people in the world. (Coliseum History) Throughout the 92 years of the stadiums
existences many changes have taken place and the facility has had to adapt to the new century.
Advances in construction and design have allowed the Trojans to stay current and competitive with
the new stadiums. One thing remains, and that is the fact that USC Trojan fans love the unique feel
and history that has been made throughout the walls of the stadium.
History of facility Erected in 1923 the Trojans did not waste time until the first footballs game
was played. On October 6th the team faced off against Pomona College finding their first home
victory in the new stadium. In the first opening game the Trojans played in front of a 12,836
people which was a relatively small number of people considering they

2006 Hurricane Risk Case Study Essay
1. How profitable are property and casualty insurance companies? Answer: Property and casualty
insurance protects property (houses, cars, boats, and so on) against losses due to accidents, fire,
disasters, and other calamities. Property and casualty policies tend to be short term contracts and,
that s why the subject to frequent renewal is, and one more characteristic feature is the absence of
savings component. Property and casualty premiums are based on the probability of sustaining the
loss. To estimate the key determinant of the price of an insurancepolicy, i.e. risks, insurance
companies take third party proceedings that develop models of catastrophe loss probabilities.

The reason for this is that the deductible for hurricane related damage is typically a percentage of
his home s value, and can be quite high in some cases, in our case it is $14 000, it is 2% from
the home s value (for 2006 $648 390). Another extremely important point is that hurricane
coverage is generally limited to wind damage, and thus does not cover damage due to a possible
storm surge or subsequent flooding. As such, Joe Martinez will need to purchase flood insurance
if he wish to be fully protected. Finally, given the potential for water intrusion during and after a
hurricane, he should check to see if he is covered for mold damage. Mold can be an extremely
expensive problem to deal with, and many homeowners insurance policies explicitly exclude mold
damage, or at least limit the coverage associated with mold claims.
So, you can see that there are a lot of reasons to buy the hurricane insurance. Analyzing Joe
Martinez s earnings (175 000$ annually), we can say that the total premium for $ 13 000 is
quite large amount (7% of annual earnings). If we will compare this amount with his monthly
earnings ($ 14 583) it is 89%. But from another point of view, his eventual losses from hurricane
s devastation maximum can be $648 390, in case of 5th and 4th categories of hurricanes. We
would like to give an advice to Joe Martinez, to buy standard and wind coverage insurance for $13
000, and he should think about

The Dangers Of Cosmetic Surgery
The Dangers of Cosmetic Surgery Have you ever thought about getting Cosmetic Surgery? The

operation, make sure you are aware of what s involved before proceeding. With more than 55

and even cars, they are inspiration to teens everywhere. When you re being followed by
paparazzi all the time, there s no time to look bad. That s where dermatologist Christie Kidd

when to use them. Who doesn t want clear, glowing skin? With these products they use costing
hundreds of dollars, not everyone who wants them can afford them. Although some people find

other people think or say about us is all that matters, when in reality it doesn t. When people see
their celebrity idols looks changing they want to change it to because they think they aren t good

Moral Duty In Firestorm And The Immigrant
Word Count (598)
Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction which allows us as readers to contemplate grand
religious concepts such as moral duty and G d s will as we vicariously live through fictitious
characters in dystopian societies or remarkable situations. Such concepts are explored in The
Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Attwood, Canticles for Leibowitz by Walter Miller, and
Contamination by Richard Bowker as moral duty is contemplated, while in Firestorm by Steve
Tem and The Emigrant by Joel Rosenberg, G d s plan is explored.
Protagonists in works of science fiction are often faced with moral dilemmas brought about by
dystopian societies. In The Handmaid s Tale , the protagonist Offred and her husband Luke are
forced to flee their home as Congress is taken over by the military regime of the Christian
fundamentalists of Gilead. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Because of this extreme situation, Luke takes the cat into the garage and kills her while Offred
remains in their living room. She reflects on how she should have at least have asked him about
it afterwards, so he didn t have to carry it alone (Attwood 192) . This ethical dilemma causes her
guilt and is a direct effect of the dystopian society of Gilead which forces its residents to make
these unbearable decisions. Similarly, in Canticles for Leibowitz set in the year 3781, nuclear
explosions begin to erupt as part of a war and a Doctor Cors opens a relief camp in an abbey. He
meets a mother and child who suffer from radiation sickness and decides to administer them
euthanasia as he doesn t want to live as the torturer of that woman and that child (Miller 565). The
dystopian world he lives in full of nuclear radiation compels him to break his promise to the abbey
not to go against

Theme Of Love In City Lights
I.The one theme that connects all the films we have watched in this class is an overall theme of
love this love presents itself in many different ways. In City Lights, the love between The tramp
and the blind girl, in Central Station it is the love between two strangers, Dora and Josue, The
Namesake has the lovein an arranged marriage, Children of Heaven, the love between a brother and
sister, and The Kite Runner has love between two best friends that transcends the generations. All of
these movies have very different sets of characters, plots, settings, and cultures but the one theme
connecting them all is love. This love presents itself in many different ways, but the love is present
all the same.
City Lights by Charlie Chaplin took place right here in the United States and started off the
semester with a traditional view of love as a culture we often view falling in love with someone
as the ideal what everyone wants. We especially want someone to love us for who we are, not
the money or things that we have. In City Lights, the Tramp inadvertently tricks the blind girl
into thinking that he has a lot of money. However despite this deception, he loves her, he wants
to do what is best for her, even if it gets him in trouble or sends her away from him. He tries
working hard to get her what she needs a cure for her blindness. Working hard does not work out
for him, and he goes to great lengths to get the money for her, including the boxing match and
asking the millionaire for help. He does this because he loves her deeply and he wants what is best
for her. The movie ends with her being able to see and still accepting him despite the fact that he is
not a millionaire. This film portrays the great American love story putting the other person first, and
loving them despite their circumstances.
Central Station from Brazil by Walter Salles depicts a different kind of love. This movie could
have been about Josue, and the love with his mother or his brothers at the end when he finds them
instead it is about the love between him and Dora, an old, sad woman with no relation to him.
Throughout the film, Dora always tries to do what she thinks is best for Josue. It is misguided at
first, when she sells him to

Semilunar Valves
After atrioventricular valves closure, the pressure in the ventricles continues grows rapidly.
Diastolic pressure in aorta is several times higher than in left atrium. The pressure in pulmonary
artery is also higher than in right atrium. That is why between the closure of atrioventricular valves
and opening of semilunar (aorta and pulmonary artery) some time passes, a moment, when pressure
in the ventricles rapidly grows, but without expulsion and ventricles capacity does not change.
Duration of this phase is comparable to the T1 duration. Semilunar valves open at the end of this
phase. In some situations, the opening of pathologically changed valves of aorta and pulmonary
artery goes along with audible expulsion tone (TO).
After semilunar valves opening, blood flows into aorta and pulmonary artery. Normally, this is the
fastest bloodstream during the whole cardiac cycle. For healthy people it may go along with a soft
noise, which is audible in the middle of the systole, and often slightly shifted to T1. Just like
pressure gradient, the volume of this noise grows at first, and then decreases. This is often normal.

When it gets lower, than in aorta and pulmonary artery, the semilunar valves close, which goes
along with audible second tone (T2). Important: ventricle systoles are not synchronous. They may
start and end not simultaneously. Usually it happens like that, moreover, breathing affects the
duration of ventricle systoles that is why it varies in time. When ventricle systoles do not end
simultaneously, T2 splits into aortal and pulmonary components, each one which caused by the
closure of corresponding valve. Second tone components accurately mark the systolic ending time

The Weaknesses Of The Greenhouse Gas Theory
The Weaknesses of the Greenhouse Gas Theory
Greenhouses are used to grow crops such as tomatoes and lettuce under controlled conditions.
Greenhouses consist of a framed building with transparent covering. Sunlight penetrates through the
transparent covering to get to the plants inside. The plants and the soil absorb the sunlight and
radiate some of the absorbed energy as heat.
Quite often, greenhouses ventilate either through controlled openings or by fanning air around. The
ventilation is necessary to avoid the build up of water vapor and to ensure that too much heat doesn
t too negatively affect the plants. The key elements of the greenhouse are the outer shell that traps
the air inside, the trapped air, and controlled ventilation.

There are several weaknesses in the arguments supporting the greenhouse gas theory. These are
explained in the following sections.
Carbon dioxide is heavier than air. Carbon dioxide, deemed as the key offender in the greenhouse
theory, is heavier than air. This means that its highest concentrations are close to the ground in low
lying areas. Without the benefit of experiments to the prove the point, it can still be postulated that
the highest concentrations of carbon dioxide are within 1000 meters (3,500 feet) above sea level,
and concentrations will diminish as air climbs higher into the atmosphere. Incidentally, this is not
unusual. Oxygen is known to diminish with elevation as well.
Since carbon dioxide is most prevalent when close to ground level, it is unlikely that it would
absorb significant levels of outgoing, long wavelength radiation (heat) and hold enough of it to
influence global

Summary Of Intellectual Pinching And Suffering By Annie...
There can be no doubt that Annie Tindley is an outstanding academic, her work concerning the
historiography of the rural areas and populace of Scotland has been celebrated by Scottish history
academics. Her article, Actual pinching and suffering : Estate Responses to Poverty in Sutherland
1845 86 is no exception to this outstanding career. In this piece of academic literature, Dr. Tindley
has written an effective piece that strikes against the academic status quo when viewing the life of
rural Highland Scots in the period between the Highland Famine and the Crofters War. Specifically
the piece analyses the economic and political woes of the Sutherland estate of the remote northwest
of Scotland. She claims that popular thought... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Throughout the play we see a rising culmination of emotions of anger and hate to the point where
there is an anticlimactic resolution when Medea gets revenge on Jason. If Aristotle were to
comment on this so called tragedy that Euripedes wrote, he would mention that this play does not
contain the complexity and quality that a tragedymost definitely needs. According to Aristotle, the
most important part of a tragedy is its plot or as Aristotle puts it, the imitation of an action or
mimesis. Aristotle also states that in making a tragedy, three things must lead one after the other in
a successive way; reversal of intention (peripetiea), recognition (anagnorisis) and the cleansing of
pity and fear (catharsis). Euripedes fails to make Medea a tragedy as he does not include these
main elements such as hermatia, peripeteia, anagnorisis and catharsis that Aristotle says make a
tragedy successful. Euripedes ultimately fails to make a very complex play.
The peripeteia or the reversal of intention, which according to Aristotle is the first element that
should come in a tragedy, in Medea is absent or seldom occurs in the play as Medea is well
determined in her motives from the very beginning to take revenge on Jason. From the very
beginning of the play where Medea learns that her husband, Jason, has ... Show more content on

He literally writes that she is realizing the wrong her husband does her. Though there is no
Peripeteia that precedes this anagnorisis which is usually the case in a tragedy, as Aristotle notes,
it still is the turning point of the play and the time in which Medea becomes a dangerous and vile
woman who will again get revenge because of her love and passion for Jason. But from this point
on, Medea s plan never changes. She never passes from ignorance to knowledge. As we see again
in the conversation with Creon, she continues to carry out her revenge against Jason as she

Vitruvian Man Research Paper
Many magnificent pieces of art were created during the Renaissance period. Some of the those
very pieces Leonardo da Vinci created. One of more popular ones he created is The Vitruvian
Man. The piece of art has become more popular with time and people are still astonished by
Leonardo s skills. Leonardo and The Vitruvian Man are an important part of the Renaissance. There
may be other drawings like The Vitruvian Man but none like Leonardo da Vincis. As it says on the
Totally History website, the 1487 drawing was done in pen and ink. Two male figures are
displayed with their arms and legs extended in different directions. The Totally History website
also explains that one of the males has his legs slightly apart and arms extended straight out from
the shoulders, while the other male has his legs fairly spread and arms only spread partway above
the shoulders. Bothe men are within a circle and a square that show the portions of the human
body. Markings upon the body serve to identify points used in establishing proportional

Foodborne Illness Is A Big Problem
Have you ever wondered how big of a problem foodborne illness is on the federal level in the
United States? Foodborne illness is a big problem on the public health. Foodborne illnesses are
infections caused by beverages or foods that contain harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites and/or
chemicals. Foods can also be contaminated with bacteria during the food preparation you do at
home or the preparation done at a restaurant. If the food cooks or food preparers do not carefully
wash their hands, kitchen tools, cutting boards, and other kitchen surfaces that come into
contact with raw foods, cross contamination can occur which is the spread of bacteria from
contaminated foods to uncontaminated foods. If hot food is not kept hot enough or cold food
is not kept cold enough, bacteria can multiply. Bacteria multiplies very quickly when the
temperature of food is between 40 and 140 degrees. Cold food should be kept below 40 degrees
and hot food should be kept above 140 degrees. Bacteria multiplies slower when food is
refrigerated. Freezing food can also slow or even stop the spread of bacteria. But once food is
brought to room temperature once again the bacteria that is refrigerated or frozen becomes active
once again. Thoroughly cooking foods can also kill bacterias that cause foodborne illnesses. The
common symptoms of foodborne illnesses are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and/or the
chills. The Federal government has estimated that there is about 48 million cases of

The Family Tree Short Story
The Family Tree
Our story begins in Greece, many years ago. A baby was born in the city of Athens. Her name was
Oakley. Oakley had brown, long hair with big hazel eyes. Her parents adored her.
Eighteen years passed by and there was a big riot going on in Athens in protest of Zeus letting
Hades capture Persephone. Zeus wanted to teach the citizens of Athens a lesson by sending them
terrible storms. Innocent Oakley didn t know about the threats from Zeus, but her parents did.
Her parents didn t want Oakley to fear of the storm coming their way, so they didn t tell her. Her
parents also didn t want to leave Athens themselves, they knew they didn t have the energy to do
so. In result, they had to try and get Oakley to move by herself, without letting her know of the
great dangers ahead. Oakley was in her room, sewing a new blanket for her bed. Her mother
called for her to come downstairs. So of course, she made her way downstairs and saw her
parents sitting on the couch, with a depressed look on their face. What s wrong? said Oakley.
Honey, we have some news for you. We are sending you off to Corfu. said her mother. Oakleys
face turned red. She seemed like she had smoke coming out of her ears. Are you trying to get rid
of me? said Oakley. What did I ever do to you? Nothing, nothing, said her father. This is for your
own safety darling. What is going on? I m completely happy here in Athens! You must tell me why
you are shipping me off to another city! said

The Influences Of Mass Media On Society
The Influences of Mass Media on Society
For the greater majority of the American society, the presence of mass media is
a normal part of everyday lives. With the purpose of mass media being to educate,
entertain and inform, the excessive violence, self imaging, and lack of full detail on
world events, is having negative influences and unhealthy impacts on society.
As early as the 1920s, a form of the media has been present in the American society.
Although broadcasted content was limited and not as popular as present day, for
some homes, it was a source of entertainment and information From 1921 to 1924,
there were only 500 licensed media radio stations. By the 1940s (1930 1940), at least
83% of homes possessed a radio (Smith, 2014,paragraph 2 3, Radio: The Internet of
the 1930 s). The negativity of certain broadcasting posed as a concern, even in the
early years. As Smith explained, But the new technology also raised anxieties.
Observers worried about the propriety and taste of the radio programs that would
penetrate the sanctity of the home (Smith, 2014,paragraph 2 3, Radio: The Internet

References to Sue s Homosexuality in Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure
Perhaps the most interesting character in Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure is Susanna Florence
Mary Bridehead (Sue). Throughout the novel, she is described as everything from boyish and
sexless, all the way to Voltairean and just simply unconventional. Some claim she had read
prolifically many writers noted for their frankness and/or indecency (Hardy 118). Upon a surface
reading, one can t help but wonder about the sexual identity and desires of Sue. At first, there
seems to be none; however, upon a deeper reading of the novel, I can t help but suspect that Sue is
actually a lesbian.

In fact, the conception of all three of her children is conveniently skipped in the text. Take into
consideration Jude s previous behavior with Arabella he is a man with an enormous sex drive and
probably next to impossible to fight off night after night, especially living in the same house with
him. He is, indeed, powerfully sexed (Howe 514), and her relationship with Jude is one that she
accepted with distaste (Gosse 390). He is often stealing kisses and she is continually asking him to
stop. As cousins, and similar in many ways, these two isolated people completed each other and
needed each other, but their relationship shouldn t have been physical. As Ingham informs us in the
introduction, Sue says, We ought to have lived in mental communion, and no more (xx). Ingham
also states that Sue inspires the spirit side of Jude s nature, whereas Arabella supplies the flesh side
(xii).
Early in the novel, when Jude and Sue are first getting to know each other, she tells him that she
has no fear of men and that she has mixed with them almost as one of their own sex (Hardy 118).
In fact, she could be discussing the undergraduate that she lived with for a short time, who wanted
to be her lover, but she saw him as a best friend. This passage depicts a woman who has nothing
against men and enjoys their company, but who is in no way sexually interested in them.
Furthermore, in part three, Sue tells Jude that she is a virgin: I have

Oregon Trail Emigrants
Tens of thousands of people died during the westward expansion, and many groups in particular
resisted great hardships, but one group stands out. Groups that faced difficulty are the gold rush
pioneers, the Chinese railroad workers, and the Oregon trail emigrants. Out of the three, the
Oregon Trail emigrants faced the greatest difficulty because of the harsh geography, disease, and
accidents the emigrants were exposed to on the trail. Because the geography of which the Oregon
ran through was rough and brutal, it had a large impact on the travellers. The snow covered trails
made it difficult to travel on the trail, especially in the Rocky Mountains. Going through snowstorms

In fact, 90% of all deaths on the Oregon Trail were a result of incurable illnesses. Most people who
died during the trip west became ill from diseases for which there was no cure (Illinois State).
Since there was no cure for the illnesses, emigrants suffered greatly before they died. Bad water,
polluted by hastily constructed latrines, made it difficult for travelers to get an essential human
right from the rivers: water. Disease spread through convoys and wagon trains rapidly, infecting
many at a time. People witnessed the decline and death of family and friends on the trail. You
see we have lost 7 persons in a few short days, all died of Cholera (Freel). Martha Freel, a
traveling emigrant, witnessed the death of her friends and father to cholera,a very frequent killer
on the trail. The illnesses not only physically damaged the travellers, but mentally as well.
Witnessing such sickness of friends and family took a toll on the travellers, and lowered the will to

In There s Nothing You Can Do , by Patricia Jabbeh Wesley, Patricia exposes the many aspects of
life that cannot be changed. Through the poem, she shows a realization of something that most do

video conferencing technology has been growing as a result of the desktop and internet

Scientific Revolution Influence
Beginning in Europe during mid sixteenth century and lasting until mid eighteenth century, this
period of time saw advancements in mathematics, physics, astronomy, biology, and chemistry which
would lead into modern science. These advancements, however, challenged the doctrine of the
Catholic Church and other previous beliefs. Scientific thinkers such as Copernicus, Newton, and
Descartes helped impact Europe through challenging long held religious beliefs, changing
philosophical beliefs, and introducing new technology. Before the Scientific Revolution, popular
beliefs concerning the world and its functions all led back to the Holy Roman Catholic Church.
Perhaps one of the most known beliefs of the Church was its geocentric theory, where the Earth
was the center of the universe instead of the Sun. However this theory was refuted by men such
as Copernicus and Galileo. In 1543, Copernicus wrote On the Revolutions of the Heavenly
Spheres, where he discredited the Catholic Church s long held belief. He had argued that the Sun
was in the center of our solar system instead of the Earth, giving way to the heliocentric theory.
Then in 1632, Galileo had published his book Dialogue on the... Show more content on

works, which would then be turned into laws and theories. However, Descartes believed in the
deductive method where reasoning is found in accordance to multiple premises that are generally

Charles Darwin s Natural Selection Theory
Darwin did not publish his theory of evolution by natural selection until 1859. He was not the first,
however, to develop a theory of evolution. As scientists developed an increasing interest in the
natural world, it became evident to many influential thinkers of the late eighteenth century, such as
the Comte de Buffon and Jean Baptiste Lamarckthat species changed gradually over time. While
these prior scientists had ideas on evolution, their theories were often misguided and failed to
threaten the status quo of society to any significant degree. Darwin s theory of evolution by natural
selection, however, created a greater controversy. Not only did Darwin provide a functioning
method of change backed up by copious amounts of scientific support,... Show more content on

What set Darwin apart from his predecessors, however, was his theory of natural selection.
Natural selection is differential survival and reproduction. Those individuals that are best suited
for their environment will have the best chance of being preserved in the struggle for life and
will survive to produce offspring similarly characterised. Not only was his theory inspired by
observations made while he was on the HMS Beagle, Darwin was heavily influenced by Thomas
Malthus and his An Essay on the Principle of Population. Malthus states that population, when
unchecked, increased in a geometrical ratio, and subsistence for man in an arithmetical ratio.
Since resources are limited, a struggle for existence would inevitably ensue as individuals
competed over available resources. There must be a strong and constantly operating check on
population from the difficulty of subsistence. In a struggle for survival, those individuals most fit
for their environment would outcompete those less fit. Malthus essay became essential for
Darwin s understanding of natural selection. Furthermore, variation in individuals, Darwin
determined, was largely due to random chance. Darwin did not believe, like Lamarck, that
evolutionary change had an end goal in mind. Evolution did not always select for the most
complex organism. This idea threatened the Christian world. If variation was random and there
was no force directing evolution towards a specific goal, there was no room for God. Natural
selection was seen as a threat to religion. There was limited room for divine intervention in Darwin
s theory. Darwin himself, starting out as a firm believer in the supernatural, grew to be an atheist
by his death. However, despite protests by theologians, there was a significant amount of empirical
evidence backing up natural selection. For more than 10 years, Darwin

Hydroelectric Dams and Floods Essay
Hydroelectric dams are essential to preventing floods. Many of these dams are located in places
that are bordered by water such as Mississippi and Ohio. Most dams are created to control river
flow, improve navigation, and regulate flooding. However, some dams are built to produce
hydroelectric power which is the case here (Smith).
How does hydroelectric dams work? There s a power source that is used to turn a piece called
turbine then turns a metal shaft to an electric generator, and that creates electricity. (Perlman) The
mechanical energy converts to electricity so the water flows through the dams. It could also work
without dams, which is a process known as diversion/ run of the river. Meaning, some of the

(Walker).
In 1882, the first use of moving water to produce electricity was a waterwheel on the Fox river in
Wisconsin. (Geoffrey). In 1886, there were about forty five water powered electric plants in the
United States and Canada. Hydropower continuted to play a huge role in the electrical service. A
long time ago hydroelectric power plants were so much more efficient and reliable. Over the years
the environmental like hydro projects are being identified for concern. It s becoming a problem to
build new dams because of opposition from environmentalists and people living on the land that s
flooded. (Geoffrey). In 2003, ten percent of the United States electricity comes from hydropower.
There s about eighty thousand MW of comventional capacity and eighteen thousand MV of pumped
storage.
Some environmental impacts the hydroelectric power plant may give off qualities of the
greenhouse gases equal to other sources of energy. The most obvious impact of hydroelectric
dams is the flooding of vast areas of lands previously forested or used in agriculture (Geoffrey).
Damming a river could cause the quality and amount of water in the river to downstream. That
causes the fishes to stop migrating upstream to spawn. You can reduce these impacts by requiring
little flows downstream of a dam. You could also build fish ladders, that allows the fishes to move
upstream. A slit is normally carried downstream to the lower ground of the

Lies Exposed Into Reality In Umberto Eco s Physo
One of the recurring themes in the story, although a perverse notion, is how lies could somehow
actually be turned into reality. Baudolino explains, When you say something you ve imagined,

Baudolino s friends expressed a similar whim, The vision was an illusion, but what I now felt

How Did Basketball Start
Do you like basketball? Well if you do, do you know how basketball got its start? Well just to get
its beginning, basketball got its start with 2 peach baskets at each end of the court. Then as the
basketball a soccer ball was used! Some interesting fact about basketball is that it was used as a
conditioning sport during the cold. First, basketballwas created by James Naismith. He also created
it in 1891, but he only had 13 rules. Rule number 7 was a very interesting rule, it was if the other
team had 3 consecutive fouls, than the other team gets a point! Right now we have 10 basic rules,
but they do go deeper into it, it s just the basics. James Naismith had invented basketball in

So in 1903, the halves were shortened from 20 minutes to 15 minutes. Then in 1906, five to nine
players on each side!!! In 1910, dribbling is outlawed! In 1916, there is no coaching allowed
from the sidelines during the game ( except halftime ) No timeouts, and no substitution! That
rule is just crazy! I would never be able to play like that! Then in 1918, bounce pass was
legalized, and substitutes may be used, but they can never reenter the game. So if that rule didn
t make sense, let me explain, so if I were a starter and i really needed a brake, coach could let me
come off, but if I would want to go back on, I wouldn t be able to. That s because I started and if
I wanted to go back in that was be reentering! Okay, now 1922, there must be at least 6 players on
a side, but maximum of 9. Now 1927, players must always wear numbers on the backs of their
shirts. In 1956, the ball can be held with 2 hands by opponent, and the 3 seconds in the lane is a
violation. In 1962, each team is permitted 2 players to roam the court, and the player is allowed
to snatch the ball from the opponent. Now, to me I think that rule would be a cool idea and just
a plain stupid idea! I would love it because we could get the ball more often if one of my
teammates snatched the ball away, but I would hate it if the other team would do it to me. So I
think that rule should have never been made! Now 1963 is the last rule, 3 point field goals were

The Advantages And Disadvantages Of Role Play Activity
The Role Play Activity
The Role Play Activity could be the best way to stimulate conversation. By this activity, 1st year
EFL learners can learn new vocabulary, words statements and know how to use them in its correct
context by asking to perform dialogues, negotiate with your partner on an item such as computer or
large piece of furniture, and discuss things such as warranty that are found in (ESLGold, 2010).
This activity will help them to know the right place of each discourse and give them an
opportunity to practice it well, improve the FL and create a relaxed area while sharing ideas. As
Livingstone said, The role play is a classroom activity, which gives the student the opportunity to
practice the language, the aspects of role behaviour ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In simulations, 1st year EFL learners could bring items to the class to create a realistic
environment. For instance, if a learner is acting as a singer, she brings a microphone to sing and
so on. Role plays and simulations have many advantages. First, since they are entertaining, they
motivate the learners. Second, as Harmer (2001, p. 275) suggests, they increase the self confidence
of hesitant learners, because in role play and simulation activities, they will have a different role
and do not have to speak for themselves.
Storytelling
First year EFL Learners could create their own stories to tell their classmates or summarize a tale
or story they heard from somebody else. Story telling could help learners developing creative
thinking and to know how to develop ideas from introduction, body, and then conclusion without
forgetting to include the characters and the setting. Learners also can tell riddles or jokes. For
instance, at the beginning of each class, the teacher should call few learners to tell short riddles or
jokes as an opening. In this way, he will not only address their speaking ability but getting the
attention of the class.

The Silk Road In Han China And The Roman Republic
Throughout the lifetime of civilizations in the Ancient World, methods of creating a stable
economy were prevalent. Such method would be the integration of trade routes between societies
and a strong social class. In Han China and in the Roman Republic, the silk road was a staple in
the economy of their societies. Both of these societies established routes along the silk road to
increase the wealth and prosperity of their civilizations. However, though both of these countries
utilized the trade of silk and other goods along the silk road, they also had differences. Han dynasty
Chinaand the Roman Republic had both utilized the silk road to trade their goods to gain
prosperity and they relied on agriculture to receive some of their goods, but differences were
present in the goods that they exchanged, such as China mainly trading silk and rice and Rome
trading maining grapes, wine, and pottery. The civilizations of Han dynasty China and the Roman
republic both had a similarity in that they utilized the silk road as a major trading route. The silk
road was utilized by both of these civilizations to receive needed resources, and exchange others.
During the Han dynasty under the rule of Emperor Wu in 138 B.C, their society was often under
attack by the nomadic Xiongnu people. Due to this, he sent his emissary Zhang Qianto request aid
from distant cultures and there he found the Dayuan, the Great Ionians . These people were
descendants of Alexander the Great s army. After this

Ideal Man and Woman in The Tale of Genji Essay
Based on Murasaki Shikibu s The Tale of Genji the ideal man and the ideal woman of the Heian
Court can easily be discerned as not truly existing, with the main character, Genji, being the nearly
satirical example of what was the ideal man, and descriptions of the many women in the story as
prescription of the ideal woman with the young Murasaki playing a similar role to that of Genji in
the story.
It is made clear from the beginning of the story that Genji is the example of the ideal man. In
chapter one, The Paulownia Pavilion (Kiritsubo) , Genji is born to the emperor and a woman of
middle birth as a wonderfully handsome son (5) who was with such marvels of beauty and
character that no one could resent him (6). From this point ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Although Murasaki Shikibu parodies the idealness of Genji s character by showing even though
he is ideal he is still not perfect, by having Genji admired by the majority of the other characters
in the story she is acknowledging that Genji is an ideal man (or at least as close as one can get in
the Heian Court). His [Genji s] many flaws are balanced by his charm, taste, generosity, humor, and
sensitivity.
There are both concrete and abstract things that make up the character of the ideal Heian man
that Genji represents. In the realm of the tangible, Genji is able to play all instruments
beautifully, paint with excellence, and compose poetry that is perfect as well as his
incomparable beauty (among many other thing)s, and in the realm of the intangible, Genji was
charming and smart and emotional. Reference to his excellence in everything is made in almost
every chapter. In fact, if I were to list all the things at which he excelled, I would only succeed in
making him sound absurd. (10). With this particular line Murasaki Shikibu is recognizing that
Genji was indeed amazing, but she does not want to make him sound absurd by listing all the
qualities that become him because the list is inexhaustible. By saying this however she is
commenting on the fact that if one were to hear all of which Genji excelled in people would
realize the absurdity of Genji as a character.
An important thing that is noticeable about

Benefits Of Small Class Size
Smaller Class Sizes Imagine being in a classroom filled with 30 or more students and being
unable to concentrate due to the loud, obnoxious students. Children from ages 5 10 are known to
get easily distracted. Elementary school students fall into this category. Reducing the class size
for this age group is a solution to this matter. Providing smaller class sizes can allow students to
participate in higher achievements and build a stronger bridge to success. Elementary schools
should have smaller class sizes. One reason why elementary schools should have smaller class
sizes is because students are able to receive more one on one time with their teacher. Students are
allowed to enhance their learning by being able to concentrate fully and receive the proper
engagement with their teacher. According to Garrett Delavan, 12 students per class is more
beneficial. He proclaims that, Common sense and research suggest that there is an optimal
grouping size range where peer and adult interaction mutually benefit one another (94). While
agreeing with Delavan, students should be given the chance to be more familiar with their peers
and teacher. Allowing 12 students per class, provides students the chance to interact with each other
regularly. This is beneficial to both the student and the teacher s by allowing them to build a
stronger relationship. Teachers can easily split these 12 students into groups and have more time to
recognize each student. Students are also allowed to focus

Lack Of News Coverage In The United States
Journalism in America is one of the biggest and most important industries our country has.
Usually it keeps one up to date with many things that are going on in society. However, recently
America has faced a downfall in the reporting of foreign news. As Americans there is a need for
an increased amount of foreign coverage because there are many worldly issues we must know
about, news networks are beginning to focus only on the everyday life of Americans, and the
internet (specifically, social media) is slowly taking away the reality and realness of international
news.
The United States is a country that is heavily involved in the affairs of other countries. It is
important that international news coverage stays as relevant as any other news because of how
much the United States is involved. Goodman shares, with hundreds of thousands of Americans
deployed...domestic politics grappled with the merits and consequences of a global war on terror
as a Great Recession was blamed in part on global imbalances . Goodman asserts that it is because
of the USA s influences that global coverage is a must. In short, a country that is so ... Show more

Goodman adds, news of the world is becoming more relevant to the day to day experiences of
American readers and it is rapidly disappearing . Due to the lack of foreign news coverage, news
is becoming American based. This is very dangerous because not only does it confine news
organizations to basic and perfunctory stories it blinds Americans to what is really going on in the
world. For example, an American who watches their local news will know about what school just
opened in their neighborhood but nothing about a school that was burned down in a neighboring
country. By limiting foreign news coverage Americans are selfishly hindering themselves from
gaining important knowledge about what is going on around

Audience Appeal in Romeo and Juliet Essay
Audience Appeal in Romeo and Juliet Despite the fact that the play Romeo and Juliet was

Despite the fact that the play Romeo and Juliet was written several hundred years ago, explain
how it continues to appeal to an audience today. Referring to the play how does Shakespeare
creates tension for the audience? Explain the use of language and the way the actors convey
suspense and excitement. Refer specifically to Act 3 Scenes 4 and 5, to illustrate your views. The
story of Romeo and Juliet appeals to people because it contains so many things, which they can

The life death theme of the story can also be shown as a light dark or love death relationship.
Romeo talks about Juliet as a bright angel shining in the darkness of night, bright angel, for thou
art As glorious to this night, being o er my head, As is a winged messenger of heaven Unto the
white upturned, wond ring eyes This contrast between light dark or love death shows how
closely they are linked. Romeo and Juliet are life to each other, but their love will eventually
cause their destruction. The story starts with two Capulets, Sampson and Gregory, talking about
how much the hate the Montagues. They boast to each other about their bravery and sex appeal.
Their conversation is full of puns and sexual jokes. Sampson and Gregory then meet up with two
Montague servants and a fight begins. Next we meet another Montague, Benvolio, who tries to
stop the fight. From Benvolios s first words, I do but keep the peace. Put up thy sword, Or
manage it to part these men with me. we can tell that he is peaceful. Throughout the play people
seem to trust Benvolio: Lord and Lady Montague ask him to find out what the matter with Romeo
is, and then Romeo confesses him sorrow about Rosaline who he is in love, and later on Prince
Escalus asks him to explain two deaths. These three events show Benvoios s character as
benevolent, composed and trustworthy. The fight is

Rbb Rabbi Aaron Friedman Summary
Those who are of above average to genius intelligence usually perform well in school,
academically and go on to college and many have successful careers. The other end of the
spectrum has created many schools have special programs for the developmentally disabled
which there is a big need for. Yet what happens to those in the middle? Rabbi Aaron Friedman
compares the middle of the road students to the middle class in the economy. It is a big issue yet
not many people have a solution for them. He feels that rather than always putting the emphasis on
the above average students which many schools like to tout we need to have smaller classes which
will help more students be able to keep up in collegeand beyond. In order to not have more students
fall through the cracks we need to focus on educating them the right way so they can make it
through college and have successful careers.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He is a consultant for many Jewish private schools. He is an advocate for hands on education, as
well as a proponent of a smaller class to teacher ratio. An alarming number of students in many
schools are struggling. Rather than labeling student Friedman recommends giving individual
attention to evaluate what is holding back the student. In many cases he finds that the student
feels the class is moving too fast or the student is missing some of the tools to follow at the speed
some of the other students can keep up with. He trains specialty teacher to help with these specific
tasks. The majority of the students that have followed the programs he helps create have been able
to follow fully at an above average level in just months of help. The biggest thing holding many
more schools from joining is the cost of additional

  • 2. Witches, Sorcerers, And Shamans Witches, sorcerers, and shamans are all different terms used to describe persons associated with other worldly powers. Cautionary tales have been written about them as far back as the Old Testament and in Homer s Odyssey. While almost every human culture has possessed the theory of a witch, the most well known witch trials are the ones from the late 15th century to the late 17th century in Europe. Many aspects of European life, such as art and politics, were splitting away from the Church. Even on the cusp of a scientific revolution, the belief in witches and the supernatural did not disappear. In this paper, I will argue that although there is no clear consensus about what exactly defines a witch , scholars agree that witch trials were... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The second article reviewed, Anthropological and Historical Approaches to Witchcraft: Potential for New Collaboration?, was written by British historian Ronald Hutton in the early 21st Century. In his writings, he discusses how different professionals, such as historians, sociologists, and anthropologists, have all taken different approaches when studying witchcraft. He proposes setting a model for witchcraft and using a set model to study witches and magic across the globe. He argues that the studies done have looked at magic and witches from too narrow a lens. Hutton suggests comparing two different societies that have had prominent histories with witches, such as European and African witchcraft, and comparing them against one another. Hutton suggests that these two groups have a very different history, but witchcraft reflected struggles common to all societies. Another article discusses the domino effect of the weather and it s impact on the agricultural economy of the time and how this explains the rise in witch trials in early modern Europe. Witchcraft, Weather, and Economic Growth in Renaissance Europe by Emily Oster in 2004, takes an economical approach on witchcraft and attributes the rise in prosecutions as a model of scapegoating provoked by the deteriorating economy at the time. Oster presents findings indicating that if the average temperature of the decade was below that of the previous decade, a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Summary Of The Movie Argo The movie Argo is a visual production of an event called the Iranian Hostage Crisis that happened in the 1980 s. The Iranian Hostage Crisis happened when the U.S decided to take one of Iran s previous Shah and treat him for cancer. This led to many Iranian people storming the U.S embassy, and taking over 60 hostages. These hostages were held for 444 days before being released. Argo was based on a rescue mission called The Canadian Caper in which six americans escaped capture and hid in the Canadian residence. There were many discrepancies between the movie and the events, one of the most political being the undermining role of Canada and the fact that they left out many people that contributed greatly in the efforts of saving the hostages. John Sheardown was the former first secretary at the Canadian Embassy at the time of the Iranian revolution. Him and his wife Zena sheltered four of the six escapees, but were left out of Argo, the movie. In the film, all six of them hid in the Canadian Ambassador Taylor s residence and stayed there the entire length. In history though, the escapees got shelter in the Swedish Embassy as well as the British Embassy, and then for the rest of their stay relocated to the Canadian Embassy and Sheardown s residence. John hosted the Americans for 79 days, and was said to be almost like a father figure to them someone they could go to in times of fear. Sheardown and his wife won awards for their efforts in aiding the rescue. The fact that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Literary Analysis Of Aftermath On Blackboard By Longfellow This poem was interesting because it so short and everyone can relate to it. The speaker of this poem eats the plums someone else was saving. The speaker never says who he/she was talking to, which makes me question who the speaker was talking to. He/she could be talking to his/her spouse, significant other, friend, etc. Also the plums could be a metaphor, sweet, delicious, fresh, for sexual activity, temptation, or love. Aftermath on Blackboard This poem is about how bare the land is after it being harvest, hence the title Aftermath. Longfellow wrote this poem focusing on nature and the changing of the seasons, summer to winter. He describes summer as having sweet, new grass with flowers while the winter has tangled tufts from marsh. Grass on Blackboard This poem is about how nature, grass growing, has to restore itself and cover up the destruction that the humans left. The speaker lists the battlefields to show how nature covers up a disaster the humans made. Humans usually forget that the battles actually happen and they end up forgetting about it, then it keeps happening after that. Upon Julia s Clothes on Blackboard This poem describes how Julia has fancy taste in clothes and how the speaker likes how Julia looks in them. The reader learns nothing about Julia, including what she is wearing. The only thing readers know about Julia is how she looks in silk, describing how it flows , its liquefaction , its vibration, and its glittering. Anyone Lived in a ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Recording Food Intake For Three Days Essay Making sure nutritional needs become a part of any lifestyle requires understanding exactly what the body needs to obtain and maintain optimal health. The recording food intake for three days provides many areas of nutrition that I am more aware of that before; this includes protein, carbohydrate, lipid, and fiber intake needs. Meeting the nutritional needs of the human body helps to ensure a healthy lifestyle that is free of disease and illness. Intake of Protein, Carbohydrates, and Lipids The 3 days diet from the iProfile data shows the majority of protein intake from meats, such as chicken and tuna. The data shows that protein is a nutrient in nearly every food source but is lower than four grams if it is not a meat product. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Adding more servings of whole wheat grains, such as brown rice will assist in raising both the fiber and carbohydrate intake as well. The right combinations of food help to guarantee that the food an individual consumes is complete in its nutritional content of proteins, such as combining vegetables and grains that separately have incomplete proteins but together provide complete proteins (Grosvenor Smolin, 2012). Out of the 20 amino acids the human body needs, only 11 of those are produced in the liver. The remaining amino acids must come from protein sources. If the consumption of grain and vegetables continues to occur together complete protein will continue to be part of a healthy diet. Macronutrient Intake Ranges To maintain optimal health through a balanced diet it is important to keep the intake of macronutrients within the recommended ranges. The effects of eating too many macronutrients or not enough can cause under nourishment or over nourishment. Over nutrition occurs when long term human energy intake exceeds energy expended on basal metabolism, digestion, work and leisure (Huffman, Huffman, Rickertsen, Tegene, 2010, p. 5). Over nutrition of any nutrient in some instances can create toxicity in the human body that may result in future morbidity. The macronutrient intake during the 3 day diet ranges both inside and outside of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. A Brief Look at Pop Culture What is pop culture? Wikipedia defines it as, the entirety of ideas, perspectives, attitudes, memes, images, and other phenomena that are within the mainstream of a given culture , at a given time. Like all things, the pop culture of a civilization grows and changes with the passage of time and important events. However, past events often can influence pop culture of the future, as it determines what a society may deem an important upcoming event to adapt to. Thusly, it is possible to see links in a community from two different time periods that may seem opposites from first glance. This is how a meaningful time period, like the 1970s, influenced parts of society like music, cinema, and education, in society today. While the era of disco was not a lengthy one, it managed to define an entire decade, creating an image that is ever present in the mind of today s youth when imagining the 1970s. Disco started as a small congregation of the minorities of society: African Americans, gays, psychedelics, and others in clubs in areas like New York City and Philadelphia. It was originally the music of counterculture, or an undercurrent of differing ideals than those of mainstream society. However, this music style was adopted by other groups, and by the late 1970s, was the foundation of most popular music of the time. It didn t remain that way for long, though; on July 12, 1979, a massive anti disco rally gathered in the baseball stadium of the Chicago White Sox, chanting disco ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Being declared a land mark by the state of California after nearly 80 years of use, this structure has had many different uses other than its current purpose of housing one of the most dominate teams in college football, the Trojans. Since its opening day the stadium has set world record in attendance and then beaten the same records hosting some of the most famous people in the world. (Coliseum History) Throughout the 92 years of the stadiums existences many changes have taken place and the facility has had to adapt to the new century. Advances in construction and design have allowed the Trojans to stay current and competitive with the new stadiums. • 9. 2006 Hurricane Risk Case Study Essay 1. How profitable are property and casualty insurance companies? Answer: Property and casualty insurance protects property (houses, cars, boats, and so on) against losses due to accidents, fire, disasters, and other calamities. Property and casualty policies tend to be short term contracts and, that s why the subject to frequent renewal is, and one more characteristic feature is the absence of savings component. Property and casualty premiums are based on the probability of sustaining the loss. The reason for this is that the deductible for hurricane related damage is typically a percentage of his home s value, and can be quite high in some cases, in our case it is $14 000, it is 2% from the home s value (for 2006 $648 390). Another extremely important point is that hurricane coverage is generally limited to wind damage, and thus does not cover damage due to a possible storm surge or subsequent flooding. As such, Joe Martinez will need to purchase flood insurance if he wish to be fully protected. Finally, given the potential for water intrusion during and after a hurricane, he should check to see if he is covered for mold damage. Mold can be an extremely expensive problem to deal with, and many homeowners insurance policies explicitly exclude mold damage, or at least limit the coverage associated with mold claims. So, you can see that there are a lot of reasons to buy the hurricane insurance. Analyzing Joe Martinez s earnings (175 000$ annually), we can say that the total premium for $ 13 000 is quite large amount (7% of annual earnings). If we will compare this amount with his monthly earnings ($ 14 583) it is 89%. But from another point of view, his eventual losses from hurricane s devastation maximum can be $648 390, in case of 5th and 4th categories of hurricanes. We would like to give an advice to Joe Martinez, to buy standard and wind coverage insurance for $13 000, and he should think about ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Moral Duty In Firestorm And The Immigrant Word Count (598) Science fiction is a genre of speculative fiction which allows us as readers to contemplate grand religious concepts such as moral duty and G d s will as we vicariously live through fictitious characters in dystopian societies or remarkable situations. Such concepts are explored in The Handmaid s Tale by Margaret Attwood, Canticles for Leibowitz by Walter Miller, and Contamination by Richard Bowker as moral duty is contemplated, while in Firestorm by Steve Tem and The Emigrant by Joel Rosenberg, G d s plan is explored. Protagonists in works of science fiction are often faced with moral dilemmas brought about by dystopian societies. • 15. Theme Of Love In City Lights I.The one theme that connects all the films we have watched in this class is an overall theme of love this love presents itself in many different ways. In City Lights, the love between The tramp and the blind girl, in Central Station it is the love between two strangers, Dora and Josue, The Namesake has the lovein an arranged marriage, Children of Heaven, the love between a brother and sister, and The Kite Runner has love between two best friends that transcends the generations. All of these movies have very different sets of characters, plots, settings, and cultures but the one theme connecting them all is love. This love presents itself in many different ways, but the love is present all the same. City Lights by Charlie Chaplin took place right here in the United States and started off the semester with a traditional view of love as a culture we often view falling in love with someone as the ideal what everyone wants. We especially want someone to love us for who we are, not the money or things that we have. In City Lights, the Tramp inadvertently tricks the blind girl into thinking that he has a lot of money. However despite this deception, he loves her, he wants to do what is best for her, even if it gets him in trouble or sends her away from him. He tries working hard to get her what she needs a cure for her blindness. Working hard does not work out for him, and he goes to great lengths to get the money for her, including the boxing match and asking the millionaire for help. He does this because he loves her deeply and he wants what is best for her. The movie ends with her being able to see and still accepting him despite the fact that he is not a millionaire. This film portrays the great American love story putting the other person first, and loving them despite their circumstances. Central Station from Brazil by Walter Salles depicts a different kind of love. This movie could have been about Josue, and the love with his mother or his brothers at the end when he finds them instead it is about the love between him and Dora, an old, sad woman with no relation to him. Throughout the film, Dora always tries to do what she thinks is best for Josue. It is misguided at first, when she sells him to ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The pressure in pulmonary artery is also higher than in right atrium. That is why between the closure of atrioventricular valves and opening of semilunar (aorta and pulmonary artery) some time passes, a moment, when pressure in the ventricles rapidly grows, but without expulsion and ventricles capacity does not change. Duration of this phase is comparable to the T1 duration. Semilunar valves open at the end of this phase. In some situations, the opening of pathologically changed valves of aorta and pulmonary artery goes along with audible expulsion tone (TO). After semilunar valves opening, blood flows into aorta and pulmonary artery. Normally, this is the fastest bloodstream during the whole cardiac cycle. For healthy people it may go along with a soft noise, which is audible in the middle of the systole, and often slightly shifted to T1. • 19. The Weaknesses Of The Greenhouse Gas Theory The Weaknesses of the Greenhouse Gas Theory Greenhouses are used to grow crops such as tomatoes and lettuce under controlled conditions. Greenhouses consist of a framed building with transparent covering. Sunlight penetrates through the transparent covering to get to the plants inside. The plants and the soil absorb the sunlight and radiate some of the absorbed energy as heat. Quite often, greenhouses ventilate either through controlled openings or by fanning air around. The ventilation is necessary to avoid the build up of water vapor and to ensure that too much heat doesn t too negatively affect the plants. The key elements of the greenhouse are the outer shell that traps the air inside, the trapped air, and controlled ventilation. A blanket on a bed works rather like the outer shell of the greenhouse. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There are several weaknesses in the arguments supporting the greenhouse gas theory. These are explained in the following sections. Carbon dioxide is heavier than air. Carbon dioxide, deemed as the key offender in the greenhouse theory, is heavier than air. This means that its highest concentrations are close to the ground in low lying areas. Without the benefit of experiments to the prove the point, it can still be postulated that the highest concentrations of carbon dioxide are within 1000 meters (3,500 feet) above sea level, and concentrations will diminish as air climbs higher into the atmosphere. Incidentally, this is not unusual. Oxygen is known to diminish with elevation as well. Since carbon dioxide is most prevalent when close to ground level, it is unlikely that it would absorb significant levels of outgoing, long wavelength radiation (heat) and hold enough of it to influence global ... There can be no doubt that Annie Tindley is an outstanding academic, her work concerning the historiography of the rural areas and populace of Scotland has been celebrated by Scottish history academics. Her article, Actual pinching and suffering : Estate Responses to Poverty in Sutherland 1845 86 is no exception to this outstanding career. In this piece of academic literature, Dr. Tindley has written an effective piece that strikes against the academic status quo when viewing the life of rural Highland Scots in the period between the Highland Famine and the Crofters War. • 21. Reversal Of Revenge In Medea Throughout the play we see a rising culmination of emotions of anger and hate to the point where there is an anticlimactic resolution when Medea gets revenge on Jason. If Aristotle were to comment on this so called tragedy that Euripedes wrote, he would mention that this play does not contain the complexity and quality that a tragedymost definitely needs. According to Aristotle, the most important part of a tragedy is its plot or as Aristotle puts it, the imitation of an action or mimesis. Aristotle also states that in making a tragedy, three things must lead one after the other in a successive way; reversal of intention (peripetiea), recognition (anagnorisis) and the cleansing of pity and fear (catharsis). Euripedes fails to make Medea a tragedy as he does not include these main elements such as hermatia, peripeteia, anagnorisis and catharsis that Aristotle says make a tragedy successful. Euripedes ultimately fails to make a very complex play. The peripeteia or the reversal of intention, which according to Aristotle is the first element that should come in a tragedy, in Medea is absent or seldom occurs in the play as Medea is well determined in her motives from the very beginning to take revenge on Jason. • 23. Foodborne Illness Is A Big Problem Have you ever wondered how big of a problem foodborne illness is on the federal level in the United States? Foodborne illness is a big problem on the public health. Foodborne illnesses are infections caused by beverages or foods that contain harmful bacteria, viruses, parasites and/or chemicals. Foods can also be contaminated with bacteria during the food preparation you do at home or the preparation done at a restaurant. If the food cooks or food preparers do not carefully wash their hands, kitchen tools, cutting boards, and other kitchen surfaces that come into contact with raw foods, cross contamination can occur which is the spread of bacteria from contaminated foods to uncontaminated foods. If hot food is not kept hot enough or cold food is not kept cold enough, bacteria can multiply. Bacteria multiplies very quickly when the temperature of food is between 40 and 140 degrees. Cold food should be kept below 40 degrees and hot food should be kept above 140 degrees. Bacteria multiplies slower when food is refrigerated. Freezing food can also slow or even stop the spread of bacteria. But once food is brought to room temperature once again the bacteria that is refrigerated or frozen becomes active once again. Thoroughly cooking foods can also kill bacterias that cause foodborne illnesses. The common symptoms of foodborne illnesses are vomiting, diarrhea, fever, abdominal pain, and/or the chills. Scientific thinkers such as Copernicus, Newton, and Descartes helped impact Europe through challenging long held religious beliefs, changing philosophical beliefs, and introducing new technology. Before the Scientific Revolution, popular beliefs concerning the world and its functions all led back to the Holy Roman Catholic Church. Perhaps one of the most known beliefs of the Church was its geocentric theory, where the Earth was the center of the universe instead of the Sun. However this theory was refuted by men such as Copernicus and Galileo. In 1543, Copernicus wrote On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres, where he discredited the Catholic Church s long held belief. As scientists developed an increasing interest in the natural world, it became evident to many influential thinkers of the late eighteenth century, such as the Comte de Buffon and Jean Baptiste Lamarckthat species changed gradually over time. While these prior scientists had ideas on evolution, their theories were often misguided and failed to threaten the status quo of society to any significant degree. What set Darwin apart from his predecessors, however, was his theory of natural selection. Natural selection is differential survival and reproduction. Those individuals that are best suited for their environment will have the best chance of being preserved in the struggle for life and will survive to produce offspring similarly characterised. Not only was his theory inspired by observations made while he was on the HMS Beagle, Darwin was heavily influenced by Thomas Malthus and his An Essay on the Principle of Population. Malthus states that population, when unchecked, increased in a geometrical ratio, and subsistence for man in an arithmetical ratio. Since resources are limited, a struggle for existence would inevitably ensue as individuals competed over available resources. There must be a strong and constantly operating check on population from the difficulty of subsistence. In a struggle for survival, those individuals most fit for their environment would outcompete those less fit. Malthus essay became essential for Darwin s understanding of natural selection. Furthermore, variation in individuals, Darwin determined, was largely due to random chance. Darwin did not believe, like Lamarck, that evolutionary change had an end goal in mind. Evolution did not always select for the most complex organism. This idea threatened the Christian world. If variation was random and there was no force directing evolution towards a specific goal, there was no room for God. Natural selection was seen as a threat to religion. There was limited room for divine intervention in Darwin s theory. Darwin himself, starting out as a firm believer in the supernatural, grew to be an atheist by his death. A long time ago hydroelectric power plants were so much more efficient and reliable. Over the years the environmental like hydro projects are being identified for concern. • 39. Lies Exposed Into Reality In Umberto Eco s Physo One of the recurring themes in the story, although a perverse notion, is how lies could somehow actually be turned into reality. Baudolino explains, When you say something you ve imagined, and others then say that s exactly how it is, you end up believing it yourself. Abdul, one of Baudolino s friends expressed a similar whim, The vision was an illusion, but what I now felt inside was not; it was true desire. When you feel it, it s not an illusion. It s real (Eco, 2002). Umberto Ecosuggests that fabricated lies are able to shape reality; even the liar convinces himself /herself that those lies are the truth. In reality, almost everyone tells lies, basically to benefit one s own interests. However, in trying so hard to convince others, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Baudolino s first attempt to save the Alessandrians, he conspired the appearance of Saint Peter as though protecting their newfound city: to prevent the attack. However, one of the men realizing that it must have been one of Baudolino s tricks, wreaked havoc and confusion among the soldiers and the citizens of the city. Instead of resolving the conflict, Baudolino felt as though he merely worsened it; because of him, innocent and brave lives were lost. The gravest consequence of one of his lies was of concealing his adoptive father s death. Since Baudolino and his friends were assigned to guard the emperor, they feared that they would be falsely accused of having murdered the emperor. To disguise that, they made it seem as though Frederick had died drowning in the river. At the end of the novel, Baudolino realized that his beloved father really wasn t murdered in the room merely unconscious. This meant that the emperor Frederick really died of drowning and could have lived had they told the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Well just to get its beginning, basketball got its start with 2 peach baskets at each end of the court. Then as the basketball a soccer ball was used! Some interesting fact about basketball is that it was used as a conditioning sport during the cold. First, basketballwas created by James Naismith. He also created it in 1891, but he only had 13 rules. Rule number 7 was a very interesting rule, it was if the other team had 3 consecutive fouls, than the other team gets a point! Right now we have 10 basic rules, but they do go deeper into it, it s just the basics. James Naismith had invented basketball in Springfield, Massachusetts. Originally James was a Canadian American... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... So in 1903, the halves were shortened from 20 minutes to 15 minutes. Then in 1906, five to nine players on each side!!! In 1910, dribbling is outlawed! In 1916, there is no coaching allowed from the sidelines during the game ( except halftime ) No timeouts, and no substitution! That rule is just crazy! I would never be able to play like that! Then in 1918, bounce pass was legalized, and substitutes may be used, but they can never reenter the game. So if that rule didn t make sense, let me explain, so if I were a starter and i really needed a brake, coach could let me come off, but if I would want to go back on, I wouldn t be able to. That s because I started and if I wanted to go back in that was be reentering! Okay, now 1922, there must be at least 6 players on a side, but maximum of 9. Now 1927, players must always wear numbers on the backs of their shirts. In 1956, the ball can be held with 2 hands by opponent, and the 3 seconds in the lane is a violation. In 1962, each team is permitted 2 players to roam the court, and the player is allowed to snatch the ball from the opponent. Now, to me I think that rule would be a cool idea and just a plain stupid idea! I would love it because we could get the ball more often if one of my teammates snatched the ball away, but I would hate it if the other team would do it to me. So I think that rule should have never been made! Now 1963 is the last rule, 3 point field goals were ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Ideal Man and Woman in The Tale of Genji Essay Based on Murasaki Shikibu s The Tale of Genji the ideal man and the ideal woman of the Heian Court can easily be discerned as not truly existing, with the main character, Genji, being the nearly satirical example of what was the ideal man, and descriptions of the many women in the story as prescription of the ideal woman with the young Murasaki playing a similar role to that of Genji in the story. It is made clear from the beginning of the story that Genji is the example of the ideal man. His [Genji s] many flaws are balanced by his charm, taste, generosity, humor, and sensitivity. There are both concrete and abstract things that make up the character of the ideal Heian man that Genji represents. In the realm of the tangible, Genji is able to play all instruments beautifully, paint with excellence, and compose poetry that is perfect as well as his incomparable beauty (among many other thing)s, and in the realm of the intangible, Genji was charming and smart and emotional. Reference to his excellence in everything is made in almost every chapter. In fact, if I were to list all the things at which he excelled, I would only succeed in making him sound absurd. (10). With this particular line Murasaki Shikibu is recognizing that Genji was indeed amazing, but she does not want to make him sound absurd by listing all the qualities that become him because the list is inexhaustible. By saying this however she is commenting on the fact that if one were to hear all of which Genji excelled in people would realize the absurdity of Genji as a character. Children from ages 5 10 are known to get easily distracted. Elementary school students fall into this category. Reducing the class size for this age group is a solution to this matter. Providing smaller class sizes can allow students to participate in higher achievements and build a stronger bridge to success. Elementary schools should have smaller class sizes. One reason why elementary schools should have smaller class sizes is because students are able to receive more one on one time with their teacher. Students are allowed to enhance their learning by being able to concentrate fully and receive the proper engagement with their teacher. According to Garrett Delavan, 12 students per class is more beneficial. He proclaims that, Common sense and research suggest that there is an optimal grouping size range where peer and adult interaction mutually benefit one another (94). While agreeing with Delavan, students should be given the chance to be more familiar with their peers and teacher. Allowing 12 students per class, provides students the chance to interact with each other regularly. This is beneficial to both the student and the teacher s by allowing them to build a stronger relationship. Teachers can easily split these 12 students into groups and have more time to recognize each student. Students are also allowed to focus ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
