Compare and Contrast Lorraine Jenson and John Conlan Essay
How much in common do you think Lorraine Jenson and John Conlan have? How many differences
do you think Lorraine Jenson and John Conlan have? Well you are about to find that out. In the book
The Pigman, written by Paul Zindel, there are two characters, Lorraine and John in which i am
comparing and contrasting. Even though Lorraine doesn t seem like as though she has alot in common
with John they can be alike and different in the littlest things possible, such as in physical appearance,
in thier behavior and personality, and in their strengths and weaknesses.Just see for your self.
Although Lorraine and John share the same race they are still different and alike in many other ways.

Now, each characters in the book The Pigman compare and contrast in personality and behavior in
many ways. Lorraine and John both lie to their parents, skip school, swears, make prank calls, and
they both come from dysfunctional families. They differin many ways because Lorraine wants to
become a writer while John wants to become an actor. Although John doesnt listen to his parents and
is jealous of his perfect older brother, he isn t really that bad of a person. On the other hand Lorraine is
tought to hate men because of her mother mistakes, not only does she act like her mother but she is
very very very cautious just like her too. You just never caught him.

Comparing Prince Hamlet In The T. V Play
Both Prince hamlet in the play Hamlet, and Clay in the T.V. series Thirteen Reasons Why, have ways
of dealing with loss, seeking the truth, and getting revenge. Both characters deal with a great amount
of grief, hurt, and confusion. These two characters are alike in many ways throughout the play, and the
T.V series. In the play Hamlet, Prince Hamlet s father dies by the hand of his uncle who goes by the
name of Claudius. Hamlet is confused, hurt, and depressed, and he doesn t know how to deal with
what he s feeling after the loss/murder of his father Prince Hamlet. O, that this too too sullied flesh

son, do this same villain send To heaven. (3.3.77 83) Hamlet has devised a plan to get revenge on the
man who killed his father, but he is hesitant. In this quote, Hamlet is about to strike Claudius with the
sword, when he realizes that Claudius is praying. If he really is praying, then he goes to heaven. How
would that be fair that the man who killed Hamlet s father goes to heaven? So Hamlet doesn t kill
Claudius. In the show Thirteen Reasons Why, Clay goes through a series of times when he tries to get
revenge on the people who hurt Hannah. Clay doesn t really know what to do with his grief or
feelings, so he cracks under the pressure and stress to act like he s okay when he s not. Clay takes a

Vaulting Ambition In Macbeth
In the suspenseful drama The Tragedy of Macbeth, William Shakespeare tells a tale of an overly
ambitious nobleman s sinful rise to power and his dreadful, deadly downfall. Macbeth, the main
character and antagonist, begins the drama as a loyal captain. Duncan, the King of Scotland, praises
Macbeth, declaring him as a worthy gentleman (I.ii.24). Later, three unnamed witches appear to
Macbeth and his loyal friend Banquo, and the witches prophetically greet Macbeth as Thane of
Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King hereafter. Of the bold, unsettling statement, only one is currently
true about Macbeth, but the proclamation lights the fuse to a ticking time bomb of vaulting ambition
in Macbeth. Lady Macbeth aids in her husband s vaulting ambition, ... Show more content on

Macbeth soon composes a letter to Lady Macbeth, and she takes the dominant role in urging him to
kill Duncan. The witches statement of Macbeth s titles ignites a fire of vaulting passion that leads him
the way to death. Through outlandish actions, the witches conjure three apparitions to answer the
curious Macbeth s questions about his future as the King of Scotland. The three apparitions inform
Macbeth to beware Macduff , that none of woman born shall harm Macbeth , and that Macbeth shall
never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him (IV.i.71,
80 81, 92 94). The three apparitions are respectively an armed head, a bloody child, and a crowned
child with a tree in his hand. This makes Macbeth s rule appear unwavering. However, appearance
versus reality abets the witches in leading Macbeth to death, and the predictions unfold one at a time,
each one figuratively hacking away another piece of Macbeth s live. First, Macbeth is able to murder
Macduff s whole family, an act thought to drive Macduff further away, but in reality, sparks a fire of
anger and revenge against Macbeth. Next, soldiers of the combined forces of Malcolm, Siward, and
Macduff cut down and carry Birnam Wood to Dunsinane Hill in order to shadow the numbers of our
host (V.iv.5 6). They appear to be small in size, but are really a colossal, powerful force led by
courageous and zealous leaders. Finally, Macduff proclaims that he was

Francisco Goya May 3 1808
Francisco Goya s The Executions of May 3, 1808, is a remarkably interesting piece of art. This piece
represents a protest against the Napoleon Occupational Army in Madrid. There are various visual
elements and design principles in the art, which will be covered. The beginning of this ILO will
contain the visual elements first, followed by the design principles, and what they mean in the
artwork. In Goya s art, we can see the primary, visual element of lines. Lines represent motion,
dynamics, and direction. The soldiers are aiming their rifles at a group of prisoners waiting for
execution. Horizontal lines indicate a peaceful scene, however, in this case, it would be appropriate to
say they mean a sense of destruction or death, as the title of the art depicts. As the view follows the
direction of the lines, the viewer is immediately drawn to the man with the bright white shirt. The
values of the piece are relatively dark and morbid, however, when we look at the man with the white
shirt, we can see the opposite effect of the bright white shirt. Going back to the element of lines, once
the viewer looks at the man with the white shirt, you can see his hands are in a diagonal position.
These diagonal lines represent dynamics and tension. The pressure comes from the imminent
execution of that man.

We must also deduce whether the balance is symmetrical or asymmetrical. If one splits the painting in
half, one can see it is not completely balanced. You have more weight on the right hand side than you
do on the left. However, regarding art, it is balanced. Even though there are more objects on the right,
the values of the bright white shirt give it a sense of equal distribution. This uneven, yet balanced
proportion of the art tells the viewer that it is asymmetrical. It is asymmetrical because it is unequally
distributed, yet it is still

Sources of ancillary revenue include fees for baggage, ticket change, extra amenities, annual
subscriptions to premium services, frequent flyer programs (FFP), and even on board duty free sales.
Some of the more innovative sources (such as annual subscriptions and FFP products like branded
credit cards) generate handsome margins for the airline and promote brand loyalty. Such strategies
helped the airlines improve profitability for 2013.
Improved profitability is allowing airlines to increase strategic investment for future growth.
Airlines are boosting investments to enhance their customer product offering and operating
efficiencies. Example, in addition to new airplanes, airlines are investing in new information and
mobile technology, upgraded cabin interiors for higher levels of service, and additional seats to
improve unit costs. Some airlines are increasing equity investment in other airlines and cross border
partnerships to solidify and expand networks. Reinvestment of profit into airline products enhances
the long term growth prospects for the industry.
Airline strategies and business models
Strategic planning is a continual process for airlines. Plans must take into account the challenging and

The Benefits of Advances in Communication for the Visual...
The Benefits of Advances in Communication for the Visual or Hearing Impaired
Language is a means of communication that people use to interact with others in society. Generally,
language comprises vocal sounds to which meanings have been assigned by cultural convention and
often supplemented by various gestures. (Sharma, 30) For any normal person, language is no longer
viewed as a tool to acquire: language is placed as a standard and basic skill, almost being considered
given at birth. Such an idea about language is reasonable when taking into account how the
development of speech and language is acquired in early childhood. But as a rule, such a standard and
basic process of language development is only relevant to normal ... Show more content on

Then, we consider difficulties that the blind and the deaf face in their communication and interaction
with others. Finally, after identifying the difficulties, we then focus on different technological
innovations and improvements that concentrate to ease such difficulties for the blind and the deaf, thus
providing them wider access and use of language especially in their everyday life.
First, let s consider the difference for people with visual and hearing impairments to acquire the use of
language in comparison to the standard and basic language development process. From age 0 month to
6 months, babies typically learn most basic communicating language skills such as crying and
babbling to express different feelings they experiences. Also, they start to recognize and look for
familiar voices and sounds. (Oesterriech) The development of typical language skills of children aging
0 to 6 months primarily depends on hearing. These language skills are essentially responses to what
children hear in their life. So it is presumably correct to state that babies with hearing impairments
suffer the most and pulled back on developing language skills from this early on. A major drawback
for deaf babies occur in the first year, for too often babies hearing impairment is not diagnosed until
babies are 12 months old. Such unawareness, sadly, occurs too often for ninety percent of deaf

The Social Marketing Aspects Of Twitter
Research Project 1: Comparing Brand Project This literature review will mainly discuss some
literatures that address on the social marketing aspects of Twitter. With the growing accessibility of the
internet, social media does not only change the dynamics of sustaining human relationships (O Brien,
2011), but enables consumers to establish a social community within a brand. Businesses center their
marketing strategy on social media branding because active engagement implies the domino effects
following the robust electronic word of mouth (eWOM). Barton (2006) defines eWOM as a statement
made by potential customers about a brand or a product, which potentially generates interest in the
category of products and influences purchasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Expanding beyond microblogs, the ease and openness of messages have made Twitter the best
alternative to reporting and accessing emergencies news such as earthquakes and political movements
(Muralidharan et al., 2011). More importantly, Jansen, Zhang, Sobel and Chowdhury (2009) reported
that approximately one quarter of the tweets touches on brands, among which users seek to provide
information or express opinions about the brand. Consistently, Zhang, Jansen Chowdhury (2011)
indicated that Twitter provides a rich plethora of resources for companies to grasps consumers taste,
trends and promote campaigns through engaging in the eWOM communication process. As shown,
social media platforms become an essential channel for brands to gather audiences and heighten brand
awareness, but no studies have analysed the well established Twitter community of big brands as a
good reference. It is worthy examining how the biggest brands such as McDonalds and KFC
manipulate their tweets on Twitter and uncover the type of messages that both food giants deliver.
There has been a mixture of views among researchers regarding the success measurements of social
marketing (Baumgartner, 2014). The importance of maximising tweets in social branding is
emphasized in Keller (2007) s study. Regardless of the nature of the tweet material, Keller argues that
the more frequent a brand tweets, the more probably it will attend to specific customers. While

Christianity And Birth Control
Human life is a sacred right that all individuals possess. It is unlawful and mortally sinful to take away
or prevent the life of an infant. Human life is sacred all men must recognize that fact, said Pope John
XXIII in defense of the unborn (John XXIII). To be truly pro life, one must accept that doing so does
not only refer to being opposed to abortion, but also being opposed to birth control and contraception.
The Catholic Church has professed for two thousand years that the conjugal act is a gift from God to
married couples for the sole purpose of procreation. This gift is abused and perverted by humans; who
view conjugal love as a means of pleasure rather than what it truly is. Abortion, contraception and
birth control are three methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The popularity and convenience of birth control has led to a higher popularity of abortions.
Historically, Christianity has always condemned birth control and the contraceptive mentality for
2,000 years until the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Communion in 1930 (Carlson). Many other
Protestant communities jumped on the bandwagon and embraced this modern and destructive practice.
The Roman Catholic Church has stood firm in her tradition and doctrine during these dark times. His
Holiness, Pope Paul VI, condemned birth control and contraception as immoral in the papal encyclical
Humanae Vitae. Consequently, it is a serious error to think that a whole married life of otherwise
normal relations can justify sexual intercourse which is deliberately contraceptive and so intrinsically
wrong (Paul VI). Anyone who claims to be pro life, yet embraces contraceptives, is truly flattering
himself. God struck Onan dead in Genesis for performing coitus interruptus, spilling his seed on the
ground, which is a severe punishment indeed. Imagine the anger of God toward those who interfere
with the means to create life that he gave humanity. Using birth control is telling God that man
controls creation, not Him. It is intrinsically blasphemous and disobedient in nature. Sexual
immorality is condemned by the Bible and birth control certainly falls within this category since it is a
means to misuse intimacy for the purpose of pleasure, rather than procreation. Christian and non
Christian married couples should use sex for procreation instead of using each others bodies just for
pleasure. Pleasures are so readily available in this world, and now God s own generative process is
being corrupted by modern medicine. It is God who remains the sovereign Master of life. We are
obliged to accept life gratefully and preserve it

Raman Spectra Of SP0. 7 Lab Report
Figure 6 shows the peak fitted curves Raman spectra of SP0.10, SP0.10A and SP0.10B in the range

These normal lattice vibrations at the Γ point of the Brillouin zone are given on the basis of group
theory by the equation (Siddiqui et al 2016 c): Γ= 4Au+5Bu+Ag+2Bg. Based on the reported zone

From the help of Kubelka Munk (K M) theory reflectance data was convert absorption mode [27]. As
shown in figure 7 the as prepared CuO nanostructures with different ratio of citric acid exhibit
different sensitivities to visible light, the absorption edge is shifted to shorter wavelength with
compact size and altered morphology. Our results point out not only the size but also the morphology
of the CuO nanocrystals affects the bandgap. It is quite observable from the figure 7b that SP0.10A
exhibits the hogher absorption properties in the visible region. Bhaumik, et al 2016 [28] reported the
increase in absorption is highly desirable for better efficiency of a solar cell. Therefore the SP0.10A
sample exhibits the strongest absorbance and has a uniform flower shaped CuO crystal thus; we can
say that the sample may be ideal solar absorbers. Figure 7: Kubelka Munk absorption spectra and Tauc

Photoluminescence intensity may be directly correlated with the defect density in a fluorescent
material. However, the CuO has low emission efficiency (CuO is not a fluorescent material) so there is

The Bolshevik Regime s Ability to Defeat Its Opponents by 1922
By the end of 1919, with only a few isolated groups of Anti Bolsheviks fighting, the Bolshevik regime
was evidently winning the Russian Civil War. The reasons which lie behind their ability to defeat all
their opponents by 1922 is mainly due to a well disciplined and equipped army, Lenin s strong,
purposeful leadership and the advantage of the disunity of the Anti Bolshevik force.
The Russian Civil War started when serious fighting broke out in May 1918 during the transportation

Another advantage which helped the Bolshevik regime win the Civil War was Lenin s strong,

Malala Yousafzai on Education
Malala Yousafzai believes that education is a basic right for every person. Malala, born July twelfth,
nineteen ninety seven is an activist for girls education. She was shot at just fifteen years old as a result
of her life as an activist. Malala was nominated for the twenty thirteen Nobel Peace Prize, but she did
not win it. Many people have mixed feelings about the outcome of her nomination for the prestigious
award. Malala believes that education is the basic right of boys and girls, men and women
everywhere. The controversy which surrounds her life is a direct result of these beliefs, and is the
reason she was shot. October ninth, two thousand twelve, fifteen year old Malala Yousafzai boarded a
school bus which would take her and other students home from school. The school bus was stopped
by two members of the Pakistani Taliban. One went to the front of the bus to interrogate the bus
driver. The second man entered the passenger part of the bus, called for Malala by name and fired
three times. One of the bullets hit Malala at point blank near her left eye, traveled down into her
shoulder and became lodged. Malala was rushed to a military hospital for medical treatment. She was
later transferred to another Pakistani hospital, where she continued to receive care. It was here that she

Female Roles In The Tempest
Over the course of this semester, the class has read and discussed four plays. The four plays include
Madea, Oedipus, The Tempest and The Importance of Being Earnest. These plays all have strong
female and male characters. Around the time all of these plays were written, women were not looked
upon favorably. Women were viewed as superficial, deceptive and dangerous.
Female Roles Most of the female roles we read about were mothers. In the play, Madea Euripedes
portrayed Madea as a revengeful psychotic character. She is seen to be the wife and to fulfill her
wifely duties day after day. Madea goes against her spousal role and motherly role to get revenge on
her husband who left her for another woman. Although Madea may be portrayed as violent ... Show

Jason in the play Madea is depicted as a cheater and unfaithful by leaving Madea for another woman.
He is also seen as power hungry by leaving Madea for the King s daughter Glauce. In the beginning of
the play Jason is seen as the protector of his children and the household but then he abandons them to
be with Glauce. Oedipus in the play Oedipus Rex is depicted as being naïve as believing that he is
running away from his fate by going to Thebes, but in reality, he walked right into his fate. Oedipus is
also depicted as a murderer by killing the King of Thebes Lauis. He is also seen as selfish because
once he found out he married his mother and his children are children of incest he stabbed his eyes out
leaving his four children without a father. Prospero in the Tempest is represented as an unsympathetic
character because he uses black magic to control people. Prospero is also seen as revengeful since his
brother took away the Dukedom of Milan from him. Prospero is also seen as very manipulative by
calling his brother and friends to the remote island. At the end of the play, he is depicted as a much
more sympathetic and forgivable character with redeeming characteristics. Caliban is Prospero s
servant on the remote island. At first, Caliban is seen as this innocent creature that was forced by
Prospero to be his servant. Caliban is also seen as revengeful in plotting a murder against Caliban to

Comparing Low-Carbohydrate Diets and Low-Fat Diets Essay
Comparing Low Carbohydrate Diets and Low Fat Diets
The two diets I will be focusing on are comparing the low carbohydrate diet or the Atkins diet to low
fat diets. The low carbohydrate diet on one hand restricts the amount of carbohydrate a person
consumes, resulting in greater weight loss after six months compared to low fat diets. The low fat diet,
on the other hand, allows people to lose weight by restring the amount of fat they consume on a daily
basis thus causing the person to lose weight as well, but not as much as they would have had they been
on a low carbohydrate diet for the pass six months. Although a person initially loses less weight on the
low fat diet, they eventually lose the same amount ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Insulin is what allows our body cells to store fat, which is not what a person wants when they are
trying to lose weight. However this diet claims to work, there are other options out there beside this
diet, one of which is the low fat diet.
The low carbohydrate or the Atkins diet is usually compared to low fat diets, a diet that follows very
different rules. The low fat diet on the other hand encourages people to eat carbohydrates, the diet
actually tells people to replace foods that are high in fat with foods such as vegetables, fruits, and
pastas. The low fat diet asks followers to eat what the Atkins diet asks people to avoid. While the low
carbohydrate diet stresses that people avoid carbohydrates and replace it with foods that are protein
and fat rich, such as meats, cheeses, and fish. The low fat diet stresses that people should avoid these
types of foods that have a lot of fat and eat foods that have a lot of protein and carbohydrates to fill a
person up. The low fat diet unlike the Atkins diet, allows people to center their diets around having a
lot of fruits and vegetables. The low fat diets also claim that by not eating fatty foods such as beef and

Comparing John Locke and Baron de Montesquieu Essay
The Enlightenment was a time of change in Europe. There were many new ideas, and various
influential thinkers that inspired new invention and also inspired revolutions. All of these thinkers had
different views on people and government and different views of people and how they act. Many of
these authoritative individuals thoughts still influence us even today. Many of their ideas are used in
government and also as guidelines for people to live their lives by. John Locke and Baron de
Montesquieu both helped to build our constitution and we borrowed some of their ideas for how we
live our lives in America. John Locke had the idea that people were born with the three natural rights:

powers. He also wrote about empires before his time and how their laws influenced many countries.
He also pointed out what laws worked and the laws that were fair and just to the people. He also
alluded to parts of earlier governments that demonstrated his ideas and thoughts. The views of these
two influential thinkers were considered very radical in their time because their views were radical
and very different from any form of government that anyone back then had ever heard of or dreamed
possible. They thoughts that a government run by the people would be chaotic. They had never heard
of any more separation of power than in England, where it was a limited monarchy. Their views on
people were also influential especially Locke s views. He gave people the idea that they are more than
just slaves for the government and that they should have some say in how their government is run.
These ideas and many more inspired revolutions that were sparked by these two eccentric individuals.

Essay on Criminology
Figuring out why people commit crimes is one of the central concerns of criminology. Do most
criminals act rationally after weighing the costs of crime? Is society ever to blame for an individual to
commit a crime? Do mental diseases or even genetics factor into whether a person will live a life of
crime. Over the years, many people have developed theories to try to answer these questions. In fact,
the number of theories of why people commit crimes sometimes seems to equal the number of
criminologists. I explore these questions and much more in the paper that follow.
The foundation of classical criminology is its central belief that individual criminals engage in a
process of rational decision making in choosing how to commit crime ... Show more content on

As a part of this relationship individuals gave up some of their liberties in the interest of the common
good, with the purpose of the law being to ensure that these common interests were met. For Beccaria,
this meant that the law should be limited and written down so that people could make decisions on
how to behave. More importantly, punishment was to fit the crime not the individual and was to be
certain and swift (Williams McShane, 2010). Offenders were to be seen as reasonable people with the
same capacity for resisting offending behavior as non offenders. The guiding principle of the criminal
justice process was the presumption of innocence; and in this general framework punishment was to
be seen as a deterrent to criminal behavior. The central concern of the law and the criminal justice
process was therefore the prevention of crime through this deterrent function.
Bentham s concern was upon utilitarianism which assumes the greatest happiness for the greatest
numbers. He believes that individuals weigh the probabilities of present and future pleasures against
those of present and future pain (Postema, 1998).
It should be noted however that the classical school of thought has had an enduring influence as many
legal systems are built on some of its key precepts. The idea of intent for example, emphasizes the
importance of the state of mind of the individual and their capacity for making choices. Notions of
proportionality in relation to punishment are

An informal helping relationship can be as simple as a chat with a friend while offering advice and

An informal helping relationship may involve counselling skills such as displaying good eye contact

The Transition Between The Iron Age And The Persian Period
Periodization is the division of the past into segments based on major changes.[ ] The way
archaeologists and historians have organized these segments have changed over the years and continue
to change by definition and time frame as new findings are discovered. Through the exploration of
periodization and through a closer look at the transition between the Iron Age and the Persian Period
one can see its usefulness, the issues that arise, and what led to the division of the two periods.
The development of periodization started with charts from Christian Thomsen in 1836. His system
was comprised of a three stage system starting with the Stone Age, followed by the Bronze Age, and
finishing with the Iron Age. Although popular in Europe, it was never influential in the Near East until
later. Instead, scholars would use politico historical terms that were handed down by ancient authors
such as names of kingdoms and dynasties.[ ] The lack of common terms brought confusion so in 1922
schools in Jerusalem came together and set the common terms that are known today. They used the
three stage system to represent macro periods and then broke each age up into the subdivisions ...

creation of the Hebrew Bible, the royal courts breeding regionalism as well as the emergence of an

California Gangs
There are approximately 1.4 million active street, prison, and outlaw gang members comprising more
than 33,500 gangs in the United States, according to the National Gang Intelligence Center of the
Federal Bureau of Investigation. Gangs are defined as a group of people who form an alliance for a
common purpose and engage in violent or criminal activity. Gang violence continues to grow in
California. It is inarguable that the gang problem has become more entrenched, over the past 25 years,
especially here locally in Porterville. There are many different gangs in California, but there is a
strong presence of hispanic gangs. During 1980 s, California street gangs were divided into Surenos
and Nortenos. Some say the North South battle started in the 1950s in a California prison, where two
prisoners fought over a pair of shoes. One inmate formed the Mexican Mafia for Sureños, and the
other prisoner formed Nuestra Familia for Norteños, which is how the division was created.
The Central Valley is the dividing line for northern and southern gangs. Gangs remain the primary
distributors of drugs. Often, gang members are involved in drug sales and trafficking. Financial gain is

county is home to a total of 106 cliques.
Most law enforcement personnel agree on a couple of key points: gangs will always be around, but the
negative impacts caused by gangs can be prevented or mitigated to some extent. However, media
reporting has a natural tendency to cover areas experiencing escalations in gang violence, sometimes

Development As Freedom Summary
Sen outlines two different approaches to development policies: the GNP/capital approach, which
measures development through GNP and income levels, and the capability approach, which focuses
on development through the expansion of freedoms. Given that his book is titled Development as
Freedom , he is clear proponent of the latter approach. He offers a critique of the former, both
factually and normatively.
In his factual critique of policies that focus purely on GNP/human capital, he argues that capital is not
an all encompassing yardstick with which to measure development. While capital and capabilities are
closely linked, Sen believes that the capital approach focuses predominantly on human beings and
their ability to increase production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He paraphrases Adam Smith in saying that to see humans only in terms of their productive use is to
slight the nature of humanity , a bold declaration that humans are not just means of production but
ends in themselves (296). Early in chapter twelve, he makes the argument that the basic concern in
assessing growth and development should be with the expansion of our capability to lead the kind of
lives we have reason to value (285). This means we ought to value to everything from the opportunity
to find meaningful employment, to the opportunity to live in a safe, peaceful area. These are clearly
non capital variables; while income is good measure of someone s capability to buy goods/services, it
doesn t indicate their opportunity to live a long, worthwhile life, which Sen proposes we should care
about as much as, if not more than just economic growth. Finally, in what is his strongest argument for
focusing on freedoms instead of capital, Sen argues that capabilities have an intrinsic value, rather
than just an instrumental value (292). Where income and capital are resources that improve people s
choices, they are a means to development, not an end; therefore, we ought to value capabilities
instrumentally and intrinsically, and use them as our yardstick for measuring

Isolation and Self Realization in A Place to Stand
Abstract: In Jimmy Santiago Baca s book, A Place to Stand, prison isolation serves as a way for Baca
to heal the wounds from his past and rediscover what he wants to do with the rest of his life. Initially,
isolation is a destructive force, but over the course of his sentence, it becomes a positive, life changing
force for self realization instead.
The manner in which prison wardens use isolation in modern day American prisons is the topic of
much controversy and discussion among proponents of prison reform. In Jimmy Santiago Baca s

This freedom Baca finds in his memories is contrary to the effect prisons are supposed to have on

to lose their minds, The numbing effects of isolation time in the hole... numbed a prisoner s desire to
fight to stay human... I didn t want this to happen to me (Baca, 149). He hones his abilities as a self

pivotal moment in Baca s life that comes at a time when he is in isolation. Through his mental
journeys, he connects in a spiritual way with his ancestors and goes from feeling alone, unwanted, and
forgotten to being accepted, loved, and important. He also says, I felt...my people s irascible desire to

How Media Has Impacted Growing Up With A Measuring Body Image
In this advertisement it shows a little girl measuring herself with a measuring tape. By looking at this
image, it already outlines that we as society relay on having the perfect ideal women body, which is
being thin and skinny. Society also implies that valuing body image and perfection is significant that
children at a very young age are already influenced negatively growing up with a corrupted mindset.
The little girl in the photo is already measuring her waistline with a measuring tape at such a young
age. She is already feeling like she must be skinny to fit into society and is conscious of her size,
teaching her that she must look a certain way. The issue is that in society the media has
advertisements, commercials and magazines that portray standards such as women being thin, tall and
skinny. This according to the Western countries is having the perfect body image. The media shows
such unrealistic images to consumers such as these young girls to try to appear like these ideals that
are set for them from society that potentially be harmful and unhealthy which could lead to death
because of starvation leading to possible long term health disorders such as anorexia, bulimia nervosa

School Shooting In The United States
Since the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Connecticut, approximately every week, a mass
shooting occurs. The number of school shootings is growing and we are not on the brink of finding a
solution. Most school shooting are in the United States rather than overseas. The number of school
shootings in the United States is increasing due to the lack of mental health care, excessive violent
video games, and the accessibility of guns. Often we link school shootings to people who are recluse
and spend hours playing violent video games. Most violent video games promote killing, by giving
rewards. Evidence supports that this is true, but video games are not the only cause of crazy, illogical
shooters walking into an unprotected school setting to kill students and staff. After the intensive
investigation of many of the recent school shootings,14 were linked to violent video games including
a local one at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. The more violence that our brain
becomes accustomed to, the more we think it is acceptable to shoot and kill people. These video

constant bonding and mutual support. In order to understand precisely how MacGregor makes his

How Do Arunta Tribes Reflect Their Society
The Arunta are a group of Australian Aborigines who have many customs and reasons for why they do
what they do. Their customs reflect their society because everything they do has a reason. Some
customs may have come about because of the environment, the natural resources, or possibly just
beliefs. There are several customs about family and kinship. An Arunta camp usually has one to two
families. The Arunta live in such small groups so they do not have to worry about hunting a lot of food
for big camps. If their camp were attacked, it would be a lot easier to look after a small amount of
people and belongings. It may be more efficient to hunt in larger groups, because you have more of a

If the Arunta men were staying away from camp hunting for several days, it would be easier to care
for five or six men instead of twenty. It would also be easier to be able to come home with only a little
meat and still be able to find the whole camp. An Arunta family is usually by itself, but each family
belongs to a clan. The clan is made up of several families, who hunt and live separately. Nevertheless,
the members of the clan are all related. This is kinship. The Arunta clans have to marry outside their
own clan so the clans will mix. The clans have no other social connections so this is very important.
Without this custom, the clans would not be friendly with each other and wars would probably happen
often. There are no forms of government or authority, so the older men of the society make decisions
for the society. They have no way of giving reasons for their decisions, so they are guides more than
they are leaders. Kinship is very important here because if a serious crime erupts, such as murder,
families will take revenge on families. The family is important because if the murderer?s family were
small, they would surely suffer a great deal. Kindness and respect are very important in a society
because the Arunta have no time for warfare and feuds. They need to spend all their time trying to
survive. When someone dies, the family goes into a mourning period. The relatives of the person show

Dagger Brigade may observe Americans and westerners operating within Poland, Ukraine, and the
surrounding areas. Soldiers, at all levels, need to be aware of their presence and possible intent to gain
access to operational information in order to support Russia.
Since DEC14, westerners have used crowdfunding websites (Gofundme, Justgiving, Indiegogo, etc.)
To help support Russian influence throughout Ukraine. This support comes in the form of fighting as
well as the spread of pro Russian propaganda. Crowdfunding websites have attempted to crack down
on using their sites to fund violent action with minimal success. http://www.bbc.com/news/blogs

On 25JUL17, Germany called for additional sanctions on Russia, urging the EU to add up to four
more Russian nationals and companies to the bloc s sanctions blacklist over gas turbines. The German
governments said that these turbines were illegally moved to Crimea to help support separatist

The Similarities and Differences Between a Mesopotamian...
The similarities and differences between the design, construction and environmental performance of a
typical Mesopotamian courtyard and a Roman peristyle house
The idea of courtyard goes back to Neolithic Times. It was conceived for such needs as providing
protection from natural forces : weather, wild life or human invasions. Later on, it was transformed in
functional architecture that can be characterized by its design, structure and environment uses. Apart
from its climatic functions, the cultural aspect has the same importance.
Vittirio Gregotti is describing the courtyard as an architectural act par excellence saying : The
enclosure not only establishes a specific relationship with a specific place but is the principle by ...

The main purpose of the Roman Perystile was of a garden or a beautiful arranged place, where people
were able to have walks or spend time outside the house on their own property. The columns were
built with two aims, the first one was for supporting the roof, and the second one to create a beautiful
architectural space, filled with specific roman details. Contrarily, for the Mesopotamians, this place
were designed only for technical and functional purposes that were supposed to bring sun light and
fresh air into the house, or to keep the temperature cool.
Mesopotamians had the tendency to build their courtyards hidden from the front door view. In order to
protect their house from street dust, they were placing them behind the corner of the passage. First
view from the entrance of an Roman house was the garden, that invited guests to spend time there.
Climate had a big impact on architecture, therefore as a response to the hot humid temperatures,
Mesopotamian courtyards were designed to control the circulation and cooling. Cool air was
channeled by night, by noon rising hot air was used in order to create cooling convention currents, and
by afternoon sun position permitted to created shadows, thus to create more cool currents. This helps
to maintain a normal temperature in summer. The organization was appropriate to that specific climate
as it contributed to creating of a pleasant microclimate by cooling and humidifying the internal

Turner Syndrome
Introduction Named after Henry Turner, who in 1938 was one the first doctors to report his discovery
in the medical literature on this disorder, Turner Syndrome (TS) also known as monosomy X. Turner
Syndrome is caused by the complete or partial loss of one of the X chromosomes resulting in 45X
chromosomes. This disease affects only girls and women. It is one of the most common chromosomal
disorder and likely the most common genetic disorder of females (National Organization for Rare
Disorders 2012). Individuals are usually diagnosed before birth, shortly after birth or during early
childhood. It is important to diagnosis Turner Syndrome as early as possible.

TS is not directly treated by a doctor, but the individual health concerns that arise for each girl or
woman with TS should be monitored and treated by the appropriate specialist (Turner Syndrome
Society of the U.S). Females with TS have a normal life expectancy but it also depends on the severity
of their case and if they are receiving the medical treatment that they need to live a healthy life. For
example, girls who have heart problems due to TS must see a cardiologist. Turner Syndrome
contributes to only females because we have two X chromosomes and this disorder is the defect of one
X chromosome. There is no cure for Turner Syndrome, but therapies have been developed that can
improve physical treatment. The primary therapies for affected individuals are growth hormone
therapy and estrogen therapy. Most females with Turner syndrome require sex hormone replacement
therapy in order to undergo normal development associated with puberty and to begin their menstrual

  • 6. Vaulting Ambition In Macbeth In the suspenseful drama The Tragedy of Macbeth, William Shakespeare tells a tale of an overly ambitious nobleman s sinful rise to power and his dreadful, deadly downfall. Macbeth, the main character and antagonist, begins the drama as a loyal captain. Duncan, the King of Scotland, praises Macbeth, declaring him as a worthy gentleman (I.ii.24). Later, three unnamed witches appear to Macbeth and his loyal friend Banquo, and the witches prophetically greet Macbeth as Thane of Glamis, Thane of Cawdor, and King hereafter. Of the bold, unsettling statement, only one is currently true about Macbeth, but the proclamation lights the fuse to a ticking time bomb of vaulting ambition in Macbeth. Macbeth soon composes a letter to Lady Macbeth, and she takes the dominant role in urging him to kill Duncan. The witches statement of Macbeth s titles ignites a fire of vaulting passion that leads him the way to death. Through outlandish actions, the witches conjure three apparitions to answer the curious Macbeth s questions about his future as the King of Scotland. The three apparitions inform Macbeth to beware Macduff , that none of woman born shall harm Macbeth , and that Macbeth shall never vanquished be until Great Birnam Wood to high Dunsinane Hill shall come against him (IV.i.71, 80 81, 92 94). The three apparitions are respectively an armed head, a bloody child, and a crowned child with a tree in his hand. This makes Macbeth s rule appear unwavering. However, appearance versus reality abets the witches in leading Macbeth to death, and the predictions unfold one at a time, each one figuratively hacking away another piece of Macbeth s live. First, Macbeth is able to murder Macduff s whole family, an act thought to drive Macduff further away, but in reality, sparks a fire of anger and revenge against Macbeth. Next, soldiers of the combined forces of Malcolm, Siward, and Macduff cut down and carry Birnam Wood to Dunsinane Hill in order to shadow the numbers of our host (V.iv.5 6). • 7. Francisco Goya May 3 1808 Francisco Goya s The Executions of May 3, 1808, is a remarkably interesting piece of art. This piece represents a protest against the Napoleon Occupational Army in Madrid. There are various visual elements and design principles in the art, which will be covered. The beginning of this ILO will contain the visual elements first, followed by the design principles, and what they mean in the artwork. In Goya s art, we can see the primary, visual element of lines. Lines represent motion, dynamics, and direction. The soldiers are aiming their rifles at a group of prisoners waiting for execution. Horizontal lines indicate a peaceful scene, however, in this case, it would be appropriate to say they mean a sense of destruction or death, as the title of the art depicts. As the view follows the direction of the lines, the viewer is immediately drawn to the man with the bright white shirt. The values of the piece are relatively dark and morbid, however, when we look at the man with the white shirt, we can see the opposite effect of the bright white shirt. Going back to the element of lines, once the viewer looks at the man with the white shirt, you can see his hands are in a diagonal position. These diagonal lines represent dynamics and tension. The pressure comes from the imminent execution of that man. When we talk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We must also deduce whether the balance is symmetrical or asymmetrical. The Benefits of Advances in Communication for the Visual or Hearing Impaired Language is a means of communication that people use to interact with others in society. Generally, language comprises vocal sounds to which meanings have been assigned by cultural convention and often supplemented by various gestures. (Sharma, 30) For any normal person, language is no longer viewed as a tool to acquire: language is placed as a standard and basic skill, almost being considered given at birth. Such an idea about language is reasonable when taking into account how the development of speech and language is acquired in early childhood. Finally, after identifying the difficulties, we then focus on different technological innovations and improvements that concentrate to ease such difficulties for the blind and the deaf, thus providing them wider access and use of language especially in their everyday life. First, let s consider the difference for people with visual and hearing impairments to acquire the use of language in comparison to the standard and basic language development process. From age 0 month to 6 months, babies typically learn most basic communicating language skills such as crying and babbling to express different feelings they experiences. Also, they start to recognize and look for familiar voices and sounds. (Oesterriech) The development of typical language skills of children aging 0 to 6 months primarily depends on hearing. These language skills are essentially responses to what children hear in their life. So it is presumably correct to state that babies with hearing impairments suffer the most and pulled back on developing language skills from this early on. With the growing accessibility of the internet, social media does not only change the dynamics of sustaining human relationships (O Brien, 2011), but enables consumers to establish a social community within a brand. Businesses center their marketing strategy on social media branding because active engagement implies the domino effects following the robust electronic word of mouth (eWOM). • 15. Christianity And Birth Control Human life is a sacred right that all individuals possess. It is unlawful and mortally sinful to take away or prevent the life of an infant. Human life is sacred all men must recognize that fact, said Pope John XXIII in defense of the unborn (John XXIII). To be truly pro life, one must accept that doing so does not only refer to being opposed to abortion, but also being opposed to birth control and contraception. The Catholic Church has professed for two thousand years that the conjugal act is a gift from God to married couples for the sole purpose of procreation. This gift is abused and perverted by humans; who view conjugal love as a means of pleasure rather than what it truly is. Abortion, contraception and birth control are three methods ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The popularity and convenience of birth control has led to a higher popularity of abortions. Historically, Christianity has always condemned birth control and the contraceptive mentality for 2,000 years until the Lambeth Conference of the Anglican Communion in 1930 (Carlson). Many other Protestant communities jumped on the bandwagon and embraced this modern and destructive practice. The Roman Catholic Church has stood firm in her tradition and doctrine during these dark times. His Holiness, Pope Paul VI, condemned birth control and contraception as immoral in the papal encyclical Humanae Vitae. Consequently, it is a serious error to think that a whole married life of otherwise normal relations can justify sexual intercourse which is deliberately contraceptive and so intrinsically wrong (Paul VI). Anyone who claims to be pro life, yet embraces contraceptives, is truly flattering himself. God struck Onan dead in Genesis for performing coitus interruptus, spilling his seed on the ground, which is a severe punishment indeed. Imagine the anger of God toward those who interfere with the means to create life that he gave humanity. Using birth control is telling God that man controls creation, not Him. It is intrinsically blasphemous and disobedient in nature. Sexual immorality is condemned by the Bible and birth control certainly falls within this category since it is a means to misuse intimacy for the purpose of pleasure, rather than procreation. Christian and non Christian married couples should use sex for procreation instead of using each others bodies just for pleasure. The low carbohydrate or the Atkins diet is usually compared to low fat diets, a diet that follows very different rules. The low fat diet on the other hand encourages people to eat carbohydrates, the diet actually tells people to replace foods that are high in fat with foods such as vegetables, fruits, and pastas. The low fat diet asks followers to eat what the Atkins diet asks people to avoid. While the low carbohydrate diet stresses that people avoid carbohydrates and replace it with foods that are protein and fat rich, such as meats, cheeses, and fish. The low fat diet stresses that people should avoid these types of foods that have a lot of fat and eat foods that have a lot of protein and carbohydrates to fill a person up. • 26. Essay on Criminology Figuring out why people commit crimes is one of the central concerns of criminology. Do most criminals act rationally after weighing the costs of crime? Is society ever to blame for an individual to commit a crime? Do mental diseases or even genetics factor into whether a person will live a life of crime. Over the years, many people have developed theories to try to answer these questions. In fact, the number of theories of why people commit crimes sometimes seems to equal the number of criminologists. I explore these questions and much more in the paper that follow. The foundation of classical criminology is its central belief that individual criminals engage in a process of rational decision making in choosing how to commit crime ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... As a part of this relationship individuals gave up some of their liberties in the interest of the common good, with the purpose of the law being to ensure that these common interests were met. For Beccaria, this meant that the law should be limited and written down so that people could make decisions on how to behave. More importantly, punishment was to fit the crime not the individual and was to be certain and swift (Williams McShane, 2010). Offenders were to be seen as reasonable people with the same capacity for resisting offending behavior as non offenders. The guiding principle of the criminal justice process was the presumption of innocence; and in this general framework punishment was to be seen as a deterrent to criminal behavior. The central concern of the law and the criminal justice process was therefore the prevention of crime through this deterrent function. Bentham s concern was upon utilitarianism which assumes the greatest happiness for the greatest numbers. He believes that individuals weigh the probabilities of present and future pleasures against those of present and future pain (Postema, 1998). It should be noted however that the classical school of thought has had an enduring influence as many legal systems are built on some of its key precepts. The idea of intent for example, emphasizes the importance of the state of mind of the individual and their capacity for making choices. Notions of proportionality in relation to punishment are ... The Transition Between The Iron Age And The Persian Period Periodization is the division of the past into segments based on major changes.[ ] The way archaeologists and historians have organized these segments have changed over the years and continue to change by definition and time frame as new findings are discovered. Through the exploration of periodization and through a closer look at the transition between the Iron Age and the Persian Period one can see its usefulness, the issues that arise, and what led to the division of the two periods. The development of periodization started with charts from Christian Thomsen in 1836. His system was comprised of a three stage system starting with the Stone Age, followed by the Bronze Age, and finishing with the Iron Age. Although popular in Europe, it was never influential in the Near East until later. Instead, scholars would use politico historical terms that were handed down by ancient authors such as names of kingdoms and dynasties.[ ] The lack of common terms brought confusion so in 1922 schools in Jerusalem came together and set the common terms that are known today. Development As Freedom Summary Sen outlines two different approaches to development policies: the GNP/capital approach, which measures development through GNP and income levels, and the capability approach, which focuses on development through the expansion of freedoms. Given that his book is titled Development as Freedom , he is clear proponent of the latter approach. He offers a critique of the former, both factually and normatively. In his factual critique of policies that focus purely on GNP/human capital, he argues that capital is not an all encompassing yardstick with which to measure development. While capital and capabilities are closely linked, Sen believes that the capital approach focuses predominantly on human beings and their ability to increase production ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He paraphrases Adam Smith in saying that to see humans only in terms of their productive use is to slight the nature of humanity , a bold declaration that humans are not just means of production but ends in themselves (296). Early in chapter twelve, he makes the argument that the basic concern in assessing growth and development should be with the expansion of our capability to lead the kind of lives we have reason to value (285). This means we ought to value to everything from the opportunity to find meaningful employment, to the opportunity to live in a safe, peaceful area. These are clearly non capital variables; while income is good measure of someone s capability to buy goods/services, it doesn t indicate their opportunity to live a long, worthwhile life, which Sen proposes we should care about as much as, if not more than just economic growth. Finally, in what is his strongest argument for focusing on freedoms instead of capital, Sen argues that capabilities have an intrinsic value, rather than just an instrumental value (292). Where income and capital are resources that improve people s choices, they are a means to development, not an end; therefore, we ought to value capabilities instrumentally and intrinsically, and use them as our yardstick for measuring ... The little girl in the photo is already measuring her waistline with a measuring tape at such a young age. The number of school shootings is growing and we are not on the brink of finding a solution. Most school shooting are in the United States rather than overseas. The number of school shootings in the United States is increasing due to the lack of mental health care, excessive violent video games, and the accessibility of guns. After the intensive investigation of many of the recent school shootings,14 were linked to violent video games including a local one at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. The clan is made up of several families, who hunt and live separately. Nevertheless, the members of the clan are all related. This is kinship.
