Augusta Ada Research Paper
Augusta Ada Byron was born in London in the year 1815. Her mother, Annabelle, took Ada as
an infant due to her husband s treatment of her. Ada s father, Lord Byron, an influential British
poet, wanted a glorious boy and made no effort to have a relationship with his daughter. As a
young girl, Ada was often sickly, but had highly developed skills in mathematics and
technologies. She was close with her tutor, Mary Somerville, a respected scientist, and was
introduced to Charles Babbage through her in June of 1833. He later invited her to view his
prototype for the Difference Engine a mechanical calculator that could solve equations as complex
as polynomial functions. Lovelace was amazed by the machine and visited Babbage as very often.
Babbage was impressed by her mind and analytic skills, calling her The Enchantress of Number. ...

Luigi Menabrea, an Italian engineer, transcribed the lecture in French, and the article was published
in 1842 by the Bibliotheque Universelle de Geneve. Lovelace was prompted by Charles
Wheatstone, Babbage s friend, to translate the transcription to English. While doing so, she added
her own extensive set of notes to the translation, which were then published in Richard Taylor s
Scientific Memoirs. Her notes, labeled A through G, explained the purpose of the Analytic Engine,
how it was more for general computing than solely calculation, and contained an algorithm which
allow the Engine to compute Bernoulli numbers. This algorithm is generally considered the first
computer program, and Lovelace the first computer programmer. Unfortunately, the Engine was
never completed, so the program was never

Executive Summary
This report was to investigate how the Nokia Corporation has been innovative since it was
originally founded as Nokia AB in 1865. This report also looks into what Nokia has done to be
considered innovative, how that innovation has paid off and what challenges the company faces
now, and in the future.
The main findings were that Nokia has been very innovative politically, strategically and through
new creations. The main focus of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The new company was involved in many industries, producing at one time or another paper
products, car and bicycle tires, footwear (including rubber boots), communications cables,
televisions and other consumer electronics, personal computers, electricity generation machinery,
robotics, capacitors, military communications and equipment (such as the SANLA M/90 device
and the M61 gas mask for the Finnish Army), plastics, aluminium and chemicals. Each section of
the business had its own Director who reported to the President of the corporation Bjorn
Westerlund. Westerlund was responsible for Nokia first going into telecommunications. Over the
next twenty years Nokia dabbled in telecommunications but in 1990, Nokia left everything else
behind to focus on telecommunications, selling off the other sections of the corporation.
Nokia Corporation has grown from a small mill in Finland to being listed as the 14th most
valuable global brand in the Interbrand/BusinessWeek Best Global Brands list of 2011. The way
this company has grown is through a series of innovations which we will look at in this report.
Why is Nokia Innovative?
From the 1970s Nokia has been working within the telecommunications industry. In 1979, Nokia
formed the radio telephone company Mobira Oy (Mobira Ltd) alongside Finnish television
manufacturer Salora. This helped put the company in

The Rocky Mountains Lander s Peak
Describe: Albert Bierstadt s The Rocky Mountains, Lander s Peak (1863) and David P. Bradley s,
Indian Country Today (1997) are created by different authors, possible for different reasons, but
they have a similar subject matter. They both picture nature. Bierstadt s painting shows the
landscape of the Rocky Mountains, hence the name. Pictured are rolling valleys, rugged mountains,
and what looks like a civilization of Native Americans. On the other hand, Bradley s painting is an
example of how modern India is viewed through his eyes. Instead of beautiful hills and mountains,
he illustrates roads, food trucks, vehicles, etc. Also, in the background what seems to be airplanes

Bierstadt uses gradient features of color in his painting. He has lighter colors in the back of his
painting and darker colors in the front. This allows the painting to be subtle and aid viewers in
realizing the subject matter. Bradley, unlike Bierstadt, uses variety in his work of art. His
painting is made up of high intensity. He uses vivid colors and even shapes to express the
subject matter. The different colors used catches the eyes of those who view it. The artists chose
excellent colors to go with their paintings. Interpret: Bierstadt s painting shows the Rocky
Mountains in the 1800 s. The beautiful scenery expresses how stunning the world was during that
time. There were waterfalls, tee pees, and sprouting trees. The Earth has been bruised and beaten.
The scenery illustrated in this painting is rare. However, Bradley s painting seems to show what
landscapes are like presently even if it was created in the late 1900 s. The construction, the
entertainment by the dancers express that Bradley believes that India is more of a tourist spot now.
It is not appreciated for its beauty anymore. People come to watch the traditional dances, not
participate. They come and go, they do not usually settle. But he does show a person shooting an
arrow at the billboard that says, Land Development . So, this shows that maybe some people want
the authenticity of India back, maybe even the

Jealousy In Othello
Analyzing William Shakespeare s Othello
There are many different emotions like sadness, happiness, and joyfulness just to name a few that
people can experience. One of the most powerful and sometimes dangerous emotions is Jealousy.
Jealousy is a powerful emotion that most people experience at some point in their life. However,
not everyone is affected in the same way. Some people are filled with insecurity. While others are
filled with fear. Most people experience anger. In William Shakespeares Othello the audience learns
through the characterization of Othello and Iago, the symbolism of the handkerchief, and through
Othello denying that he is jealous we learn that jealousy can make people behave irrationally in
certain circumstances. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Othello s mom gave Othello the handkerchief, and told him to give it to his wife if he should be
married. This quote indicates that the handkerchief was then given to Desdemona as a precious
valuable item and losing it would be a catastrophe like no other. Lynda Boose argues that [t]he
handkerchief that will become to Othello evidence of her lust [where instead it] has always
been evidence of exactly the opposite nature (Boose 270). This indicates that the handkerchief
was a sign of her love but will transform into a sign of her adultery. Although the audience knows
that Othello is jealous. Othello himself denies that he has been consumed by jealousy, and that
he has been behaving irrationally. Othello claims that it is the cause, [his] soul. Let me not name
it to you, you chaste stars. It is the cause. Yet I ll not shed [Desdemona s] blood (Shakespeare
5.2.1 3). Denying that he is jealous Othello claims that he is not going to kill Desdemona as of
this moment. He also insist that the reasoning to killing Desdemona would be because of justice,
and not jealousy. After killing Desdemona Othello argues with Emilia that Cassio did top
[Desdemona]. Ask thy husband [Iago] else O, I were damned beneath all depth in hell [b]ut that
proceed upon just grounds (Shakespeare 5.2.139 142). Othello insists that he was justified in
killing his wife because she cheated on him with Cassio. Otherwise he would have gone to hell for

Surpassing America
There are already many articles about how Asian countries are surpassing America in education, but
what about Finland? Finland, which is about the size of Minnesota, is top ranking in math, science,
and language arts. Despite this, Finland s education standards are more laid back than ones in
America. America s educationsystem is lackluster in comparison to other countries, but it s fixable
by recognizing the problem, observing other countries, and updating our own standards.
America s test scores are barely average compared to other countries. 470,000 15 year old
students took the OECD test in math, science, and language arts. The test was scored on a 1,000
point scale. The U.S average score in math was 487 meaning that 24 out of the 34 countries
ranked higher. This includes Finland who scored a 541. In science, America scored an average
of 502 which placed them at 17th. Once again Finland was a leader on the scoreboard. Finally, in
language arts the U.S scored a 500 putting them in 14th place. Finland still ranked higher; they
were in the ranks with places like Shanghai. The brutal fact here is there are many countries that
are far ahead of us... this should be a massive wake up call , says U.S Education Secretary Arnie
Duncan (Hechinger). So why is education so important?

Coherence is defined as logical interconnection or overall sense and understandability. In Finland,
there is one national standard or program of education that you start in preschool. This helps
subjects connect in the student s head from grade to grade. According to author Amanda Ripley,
That s [Finland education] a level of coherence that most U.S kids will never experience because
we don t have a coherent system with highly trained people in almost every classroom (Sanchez).

Women In Cannery Lives
Sean Gibson
HIS 10 B
15 August 2016
Since the Gilded Age, workers, especially women, had been fighting for union rights and workers
rights. By the 1930s, unions had made substantial progress in the industrial workforce. The
American Federation of Labor (AFL) had been around for more than fifty years, and it organized
labor movements and union groups. However, the AFL did not recognize the problems of
agricultural jobs.1 Cannery Women, Cannery Lives, by Vicki RuiМЃz, shows the poor working
and living conditions of Mexican women who worked in agriculture and explains how and why
they created and structured unions in agriculture, without the initial support of the AFL. This book
focuses on the 1930s, an era when both Mexicans and women were ... Show more content on

Seventy five percent of the workforce was made up of women,9 and most of these women were
Mexican. These Mexican women faced extremely harsh treatment while working. The three
biggest problems these women had that they wanted to get rid of by unionizing were the pet
system, when male employees and supervisors would favor women they liked or went out
with,10 the piece rate system, when workers get paid by their work accomplished, not by the
hour, and the supervisors, who would constantly watch the women and make sure they were
working hard.11 Women particularly hated these three systems, especially since they are
discriminatory. Also, the piece rate system would make it hard to get consistent pay. All of the
strenuous work would of course make the workers sore, and soon their workload would slowly
start to decrease. Furthermore, it is hard to design the piece rate system in such a way that women
would get about the same amount of money men who are paid by the hour. In addition to
discrimination, the jobs were often dangerous, as Julia Luna Mount stated, After work, my hands
were red, swollen, and I was on fire! 12 These working conditions inevitably made the labor force
create the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing, and Allied Workers of America (UCAPAWA).

Matching Fingerprint Patterns
I.Objective of Project: The purpose of this experiment was to determine whether siblings were
more likely to have matching fingerprint patterns than people who are unrelated. To do this I took
the fingerprints of related pairs of people and unrelated pairs of people to compare the frequency of
matching patterns and determine whether siblings are more likely to have matching fingerprint
patterns.
II.Hypothesis: Siblings will be more likely to have matching fingerprint patterns than randomly
chosen pairs of unrelated people.
III.Control: Always using the subjects right index finger, confirming that the sibling pairs were
siblings and unrelated pairs were unrelated, limiting the comparison to the three general fingerprint
patterns, always ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During the second and third months of pregnancy when the fetus is between 1 and 3 ВЅ inches in
size, the fetus develops pads on their fingers and palms which mark the beginning of the formation
of fingerprints (Johnston, 2015). The growth rate of the fetus and the placement of the pads on
their hands also helps determine what their fingerprint will indentations will be placed (Johnston,
2015). In the third and fourth months of pregnancy, the skin of the fetus begins to develop from a
transparent layer into a waxy coating, which is called the basal layer, or middle layer. The
buckling and folding of this skin is part of the uniqueness of fingerprints (Johnston, 2015). The
ridges on the fingers are the first identifying marks that form on a fetus skin. How each individual
structure is formed is determined by what they touch in the womb and the fetus exact position in
the womb (Johnston, 2015). The level of activity in the womb and the general chaos in the womb
promotes differential fingerprints development in fetuses (Johnston, 2015). By the time the fetus is
about twelve inches in size and six months old, the finger and footprints are fully

Research Paper On Escoffier
Auguste Escoffier
King of Chefs 1846 1935
Auguste Escoffier, The Chef of Kings and The King of Chefs, was born in the Riviera town of
Villeneuve Loubet, France, on October 28, 1846. His career in cookery began at the age of 12
when he entered into apprenticeship in his uncle s restaurant, in Nice.
Escoffier went on to another apprenticeship at the age of 19, this time working in Paris. Escoffier
was the first great chef who worked directly for the public throughout his entire career. Prior to
this, the great French chefs were to be found in the kitchens of royalty and nobility, as was
CarГЄme, or at work in private clubs, like Alexis Soyer. Escoffier was never in private employ.
From his apprenticeship in his uncle s restaurant in Nice to his collaborations with Cesar Ritz,
which marked the height of his career, Escoffier s talents were in the service of cooking and his
customers. Among those customers were kings, heads of state, and many stars of the London and
Paris Opera. His career is legendary, in terms of the hotels in which he worked (among them the
Savoy and Carlton of London), the contributions that he made to the aesthetics of gastronomy, and,
perhaps most importantly, the revolutionary changes he made in upgrading the culinary arts. ...

The Jack The Ripper Murders
The Jack the Ripper Murders happened in the East End of London in 1888 and, although the
Whitechapel Murderer was only a threat to a small section of the community in a small part of
London, the murders had a huge impact on society as a whole. A thing that puzzles a lot of people
about this ancient murderspree is why the crimes are still so famous, even though over a hundred
and twenty five years has gone by since they occurred. If Jack the Ripperonly had five victims, then
he wasn t a particularly prolific murderer compared to others that have come since then. The fact
that his so called reign of terror lasted only twelve or so weeks means that he wasn t at large for a

The most famous of these letters, and the one that gave the murderer his name that ensured the
longevity of this legend was the missive sent to the Central News Office in late September, 1888.
This was the infamous Dear Boss Letter, that bore the chilling, though accurate signature, Jack the
Ripper. Press coverage of this letter led to a veritable avalanche of similar correspondence that
resulted in the police investigation almost being brought to melt down. Yet the likelihood is that
the person responsible for the murders was not the same person who sent this letter. It was
believed by police officers at the time and the majority of modern day experts are unanimously in
agreement, that the letter was the work of a Journalist. Despite the fact that no one was ever
brought to justice or charged with the murders, there have been more than a hundred named
suspects who may or may not have been Jack the Ripper. Aaron Kosminski, Thomas Cutbush and
Montague Druitt are some of the interesting suspects, whereas Prince Albert Edward Victor, the
Freemasons, and Lewis Carroll are some of the ridiculous

Complication of Amputation and Edema
Title Here Amputation is the general term describing a condition of disability resulting from the
deliberate surgical removal of a part of the body, a limb, or part of a limb (Bowker Michael,
1992). Limb loss can be a congenital condition, the result of traumatic injury, or a surgical
procedure to treat disease (Clawson, 2009). Clawson posits that the majority of amputations in the
United States are the result of vascular disease caused by diabetes (p. 393). In cases of traumatic
amputation, adjustment and adaptation is more difficult than for people who have had time to
prepare, such as may occur with diabetes. Amputations may be performed at any level in the upper
extremities such as the digits, the hand, or the arm, or in the lower extremities such as the toes, the
foot, or the leg. Appropriate rehabilitation is a vital element to helping people with lower limb
amputation learn to walk and function again and live high quality lives (Hanley et al., 2004).
Literature Review
In the United States, the majority of amputations are performed in order to treat complications of
peripheral vascular disease; the greater numbers involve the lower limbs (Clawson, 2009).
According to Bowker and Michael (1992), disease is the most frequent reason for amputation in
adults age 50 or older, while trauma is the usual cause of amputation in younger individuals.
Marshall and Stansby (2008) include malignant tumor, uncontrollable acute or chronic infection,
congenital deformity, useless

The Princess Bride By William Goldman
For this assignment, I chose to watch The Princess Bride, a film based on the book written by
William Goldman. The story is of a beautiful maiden named Buttercup. When she hears word of
her true love, Westley s, ship being taken over by the Dread Pirate Roberts in which there were no
survivors. Upon Westley s death, Buttercup reluctantly agrees to marry Prince Humperdinck, who
seems to have a plan of his own. When Westley returns as the Dread Pirate Roberts, he finds
Buttercup in grave danger in the hands of Vizzini, the man we later learn was hired by
Humperdinck to kill his bride and frame Florin s sworn enemy, Guilder. After using his sword
fighting skills and strength to outwit Inigo, the Spanish swordsman, and Fizzik, the giant, he then
uses his wit to kill Vizzini, Buttercup s capturer. Once Buttercup is able to identify Pirate Roberts
as Westley, they continue on their journey, only to be thwarted by Prince Humperdinck, Count
Rugen, and their men. Buttercup is then tricked to believe that they let Westley go free, even
though they have him tortured and eventually killed. In need of his skills and strength, Fizzik and
Inigo miraculously save Westley in order to seek revenge on Inigo s father s killer, Count Rugen.
The three of them then break into the castle, Inigo gets his revenge, and save Buttercup, riding off
on four white horses. As in every plot line, there are various conflicts that occur in this film.

Causes Of The German PeasantsRevolts
The crop failure of the early sixteenth century created intense economic and later physical warfare
between the German peasantry and that of the princes and nobility. However, it was the oppression
and unjust laws created by such authorities later that actually initiated the riots and plundering done
by the peasants on the property of the nobles. This aggression, backed originally by Lutheran
principles, led to several mixed responses by both Germanic nobles and religious figures. By the
end of the German Peasants War, the economic conditions of such peasants did moderately change,
however, it was the lay rulers and other religious figures that benefited, authoritatively, from the
rebellion.
Furthermore, the main cause of the German peasants revolts was that of the oppression by lords
and princes in conjunction with coerced serfdom that was occurring during this time. As seen in
Document Two, Sebastian Lotzer, a lay preacher, acknowledges the true start of the revolts as the
oppression felt by peasants to complete their dues without proper compensation. This representation
of unjust treatment is communicated by the spokesmen of all peasants, the Peasant Parliament,
which states that the peasants would not reject authority if such is fair and reasonable . This call
for an end to serfdom is realized in Document Eight when Lorenz Fries, an advisor to a noble, has
an epiphany that the oppression done by the nobles will lead to a troublesome outcome . This

Hate Crimes And Bias
Hate Crimes and Bias
The Klu Klux Klan, one of the most recognised hate groups in US history, was founded in 1865.
They were under the impression that people of color were less valuable than white people, some
even believing that they weren t human. Something people don t realize is that groups like that are
still around today, and just as active as ever. Hate groups, and just random unorganised hate crimes
are just as real as me and you, and they are still an active threat. Hate Crime is relevant, and as a
society, we should be doing our best to snuff out the flames of prejudice and resentment that burn in
the hearts of anyone willing to participate in such unjust behavior. This kind of activity is not only
hurtful emotionally, but sometimes, it turns to violence. Innocent people getting picked off the
street simply because of their beliefs, who they love, or the color of their skin. This is something
that nobody should stand for, especially now, in this constantly progressing world. All in all, Hate
Crimes are a real problem, and in order to stop injustice such as this, we need to work together as
human beings to accept people, regardless of who they are.
Hate crimes are a type of felony that is directed at a certain group of people. Increasing awareness
of hate crimes as a possible threat, to those of a young age especially, could help to control the
number of people who participate in hate crimes, and those who are somewhat defenceless against
them. Hate crimes have

The Reasons Of The Chesapeake And New England Colonies
The Chesapeake and New England Colonies were originally settled in the early 1600 s. The
motivations behind these settlements led to their subsequent economies and societies which
became part of the foundation of these successful colonies. The Chesapeake Colonies needed cheap
labor for their tobacco plantations and the New Englandarea sought freedom to practice religion
without restrictions from the English crown.
The Virginia Company initially colonized the Chesapeake area of Jamestown as a search for
gold and as an exploration of the area s natural resources. The company realized that for the
colony to survive it would have to forget their search for gold and instead find a profitable
economy. Tobacco became Virginia s substitute for gold. This new crop enriched a growing
class of tobacco planters and many members of colonial government. By 1624, more than 200,00
pounds of tobacco were grown and by the 1680 s, crops totaled 30 million pounds. There was a
get rich quick mind set and a frantic rush for land and labor. Despite the severe conditions of the
fields and a high death rate, the colony still attracted immigrants. Of the 120,000 English
immigrants, 3/4 came as servants. Jamestown became an agrarian society with extensive farmlands
along the region s rivers.
Because the plantations were widely dispersed, this new agrarian society had few town centers and
little social unity. The high demand for male labor in the fields meant that men outnumbered

and consequentialist approaches to justify punishments. The utilitarian is a category that doesn t
contemplate the future in the decision process and only thinks about looking back on the past,
which the retributivist falls under. Whilst the consequentialist, where incapacitation, deterrence, and
rehabilitation are categorized, tend to justify punishmentupon what it will attain in the future. All of
these purposes for imprisonment aren t and cannot be accomplished all at once. (Newburn, 2013)
In this essay, I am going to begin with talking about the four purposes of imprisonment and then
argue how prisons work, backing up with what some theorists ... Show more content on

the US reduced criminality in 1990 s by maintaining their level of incapacitation. In addition, by

My Life, Basketball, And My Philosophy Of Basketball
My adult life, and my philosophy on life was shaped on a basketball court, and by my father. He
was the coach of my AAU girl s basketball team, and he instilled in us a philosophy of hard work.
We were no normal girl s basketball team, and My father s coaching philosophy rein on a team of
twelve as we waited our turn to take the court. Anticipation greeted determination in rhythmic
thuds in the background. The pace of the rhythm ever so often broken by a screech of rubber to
maple. Hard work brought us to this last scrimmage against the opposing team. As an AAU team,
our practices in Pennsylvania were purposely constructed against stronger and more developed
players. As women, we trained against male players with a men s ball. We brought agility whereas
they brought strength. My father, coach Ed , designated weekend scrimmages against the best
AAU teams in our county. The practices resulted in gaining stride as we vectored against a
multitude of opponents. It was these practices that brought us to that courtside moment, seven
hundred and ninety three miles from Pennsylvania, where we were anticipated medaling in the
State Games of America. Two hours and twenty minutes later, each of us twelve doe eyed girls
announced victory with a freshly polished tin and copper medal fitted into the palm of our hands.

The Othered Victorians
The Othered Victorians Introduction The Victorian period was a time of great hypocrisy. Despite
the fact that the Protestant work ethic was gaining popular support amongst the Victorians and
myths such as Samuel Smiles rags to riches became part of mainstream Victorian culture, the
Victorians were greatly divided into their respective social classes. Works like Thomas Carlyle s
The Irish Widow and Elizabeth Barrett Browning s The Cry of the Children exemplified the
blatant disregard of the upper classes to that of the lower class. If the Victorians were divided
amongst themselves, imagine what it was like for people of different religions and races. The

The presence of black servants within the household also represented a sign of wealth (it meant
that you had enough money to keep a servant; it also signified a sense of acculturation because of
the exploration and discovery of new lands home of the black slaves). Differences Many
Victorians not only looked upon blacks as slaves or booty in war but they truly believed there
were physical as well as mental differences between them. The Victorians believed that blacks
were uncontrollable and salacious. The life of Sara Baartman (The Hottentot Venus) was used
as evidence in support of these allegations ( The Life and Times 1). Sara Baartman was a black
woman from South Africa during the 1800 s that had a steatopygia or enlarge buttocks (
Exhibiting 1). She was displayed naked first in France and then throughout Europe because of
this. Many other parts of her body were said to larger than the normal size. When she died at age
26, scientists dissected her body and found that, Baartman s oversized primitive genitalia was
physical proof of the African women s primitive sexual appetite ( Exhibiting ). This contributes to
the belief that there were no virtuous black women, which meant they could not be gentlewomen
like the ladies of the Victorian period. The science of phrenology, [t]he

Southern Right Whales Population Analysis
The southern right whales population has been changing and it went through a dramatically decline
in the late 19th century. Sail whalers hunted right whales throughout the southern oceans north of
50 degrees (Richards 2009). Also, the Soviet Union captured more than 3000 southern right whales
in the 19th century (Tormosov 1997). This was changed after they signed an agreement in 1935 for
the conservation of this species. Populations for this species is hard to estimate because despite
their enormous size, robust population estimates are very difficult to obtain. The results of this
research showed a positive change and an increase in population of this animal. The old population

Based on this study, researchers can know what is the rate of fertilization and where mortality
rate is greatest, also they can use this population to create a model population to see what is the
cause and how they can prevent this. These results are important because it showed the evolution
of the population and it helped to see if minimizing the threats is an effective solution and how
these threats are affecting the right whales. Also, it can help assess the recovery of depleted
populations, evaluate conservation threats and also to use whales as indicators of the health of
local ecosystems (Fretwell 2014). Doing this study was complicated because the old population
was not clear, and assumptions had to be made, such as the population size at each class.
Therefore, the sample size can affect the end result. Also, assumptions had be made in the future
population in regards of the population in each age class, but it was based from a journal. The
population will likely keep increasing if the threats that this animal encounter are minimized. This
study showed how the population progresses and what rate but there could also be improvement in
learning why southern right whales prefer coastal warm waters to breed, also it would be
interesting to find more research in how these right whales communicate and transmit

three reasons for this conservativism. Exporters typically prefer conservative measures when
managing foreign receivables. Because of this, there is a tendency to lean on the side of caution.
Three reasons for this conservatism are described below: 1. Fluctuation in exchange rates:
Exchange rates of currencies of different countries fluctuate continuously and in a very random
manner with the change in the demand and supply state of the concerned currency. That can
translate the profit from the international business transaction into a loss or vice versa. Thus, the
exporters dealing with foreign receivables should be conservative to avoid this risk. 2. The
difference in the legal system: Different countries have different legal rules and policies for
dealing with and managing the foreign accounts receivable. It is mostly harder for a business to
pursue any overdue amounts from an international business due to the difference in the legal
system. It is another reason for the conservative approaches of the exporters. 3. Change in export
prices: Unexpected change in the commodity prices in a particular country will arise a great risk
for the exporters when managing foreign receivables. Change in commodity price will also
influence various other costs associated with the export like

The concept of positioning Positioning appears to have evolved from market segmentation,
targeting and market structure changes during the 1960s and the early 1970s (Sekhar, 1989). In the
last few years, however, writers on the subject have credited Ries and Trout for popularising the
term. In their work, Ries and Trout (1986) concluded that,
Positioning starts with the product. A piece of merchandise, a service, a company, an institution, or
even a person . . .
They go on to argue that positioning is not what is done to the product/ service, but rather what is
done to the mind of the prospect, ``. . . positioning shifts the emphasis of marketing from the
product to the battle for your mind. The emphasis of their debate (supported almost exclusively by
their consultancy and personal experiences) centered around the communications/ advertising
elements of positioning. This theme has been adopted by Kotler (2000) who provides the following
definition,
Positioning is the act of designing the company s offering and image to occupy a distinct place in
the target market s mind.
Although the definitions of Ries and Trout, and Kotler are among the most widely quoted, a single,
universally accepted definition has yet to emerge. At the same time, several terms such as
positioning (Kotler, 2000), position (Smith and Lusch, 1976),

The City Of The Mercantile City
1.Within the last few centuries, cities as have evolved to take on the features that are used today to
identify the makings of what is a great city. As cities shifted from the concept of the political city to
the mercantile city and finally the industrial city, traditional political, economic and social patterns
began to take on new forms and functions that transformed them to become the urbanized spaces
they are now. Major early cites began in the form of the political city, a place that was the
functioning center of the state or empire. Often populated by the bureaucratic ruling class, the
city was regarded as a space for elite. As the apex of the state, cities served as nexus of trade. A
crossing ground for people, goods, and ideas. As this network of exchange transforms the
common concept of the city, merchants slowly gained status and were allowed to move in.
Gradually the once exclusively aristocratic setting evolved into what became known as the
mercantile city where the market became the core of the city. No longer primarily a place of
consuming elites, but a hub of new complexity, cities not only drew in commodities in the form
of imports but also dynamic and profound ideas and people that reshaped cities as they were seen
previously giving rise to Henri Lefebvre s notion of heterogeneity. Cities were mirroring social
and cultural diversity with material processes; a picture of modernity as old ties were being
replaced by newer ones. Thus began the

Mark Twain s Personality Revealed in His Writing Essay
Mark Twain s Personality Revealed in His Writing
Literary artists refuse to be categorized, defined, and completely fathomed by any standardized
paradigm, but a writer s work exhibits his or her personality traits. Though authors are incapable of
being defined by mere personality traits, literary accomplishments, and literary criticisms, an author
s personality can be used to sketch a limited definition of his or her literature. Mark Twain s
literature manifests his personality s candor, graphicness, humor, and criticalness that William Dean
Howells describes in My Mark Twain. These attributes are evident in Old Times on the Mississippi,

Although the theme of deception pervades Twain s work, truth always emanates from both the plot
and characters.
While many Romantic authors elevate their childhoods to idealistic terms of good or bad, Twain
walks the line between Romanticism and Realism. After romantically heralding the position of
a steamboatman in Old Times on the Mississippi, a young Mark Twain realizes and expresses his
new belief on the unfairness of life because of his recent knowledge about the rise of an ungodly
boy to the position of a steamboatman. Twain writes, This thing shook the bottom out of all my
Sunday school teachings (275). Instead of glossing over his young self s questioning nature,
Twain acknowledges the ability to question the authority of the church, even if it is based on
jealousy. Similar in honesty and naivete to the young Twain is the forthright Huckleberry Finn.
He will not accept society s conventions about both religion and history, and he denounces the
Widow Douglass story about Moses and the Bulrushers. Huck states, so then I didn t care no
more about him, because I don t take no stock in dead people (26). Huck ceaselessly disdains
efforts to civilize him, but the Widow Douglass continues to try to change him. After Huck first
learns about Hell from the Widow Douglass, his earnest initial response is memorable. Huck
covertly thinks, Well, I couldn t see no advantage in going where she was going, so I

New York City is made up of five boroughs, which include the Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan,
Queens, and Staten Island. Within these boroughs, there are high and low income neighborhoods
that contain either high or low status organizational structures or facilities. Each division has their
own characteristics and top attractions, such as the Empire State building, Central Park, or Times
Square. As New York Citymay be known for great food and fun attractions, New York faces
infrastructure problems within each borough. New York City s infrastructure funding is limited in
lower income neighborhoods, where money needed to upkeep the city goes toward prime tourist s
areas or residents living in high status neighborhoods, such as The Upper East Side of Manhattan,
Cobble Hill, Brooklyn, and Lenox Hill, Manhattan. Moreover, abandoned buildings, poor sewage
conditions, and rocky roads and streets are examples of low income area infrastructure problems
that may hinder neighborhood growth both structurally and economically. Harlem, East Brooklyn,
and South Bronx are low income parts of New York that lack new and refined facilities, roads,
plumbing, and fundamental structures, which contribute to high crimeand arrests.

Social Implications Of A Negative Impact On The World
I know many of my friends that have encountered a situation that caused negative social
implications. They would upload personal information to sharing websites such as the well
known one, www.ask.fm or Facebook. Every piece of data they would decide to share to the
world enabled people from anywhere to read and acknowledge the information about them which
could have put them in potential danger to threats that would complicate their lives. Since they
decided to do so, future employers may have had the chance to find out about this information
which contained personal data, inappropriate language and dangerous actions. This could have
prevented them from receiving/applying for a part time, or register for college, or at the extremes
suspend them from attending school. After a speaker about online networking visited our school,
his speech had a positive influence on some of my friends where they then proceeded to delete the
comments/pictures from the websites and off of their accounts which cleared some of the tension
between certain people. Some ways to prevent social implications from having a negative impact
on yourself, family, friends or the wider community is to think before you post something on
digital platforms that has the potential to harm yourself or one another. Initiative must be used
before uploading information or pictures about yourself or others by following simple steps such

Neurologist Antonio Damasio has written significantly on Gage and other patients that he studied

dramatic than later reports had stated. A first report was printed in Ludlow, Vermont Free Soil

Persuasive Essay Why An Abortion Is Wrong
Why an Abortion is Wrong How would you feel, if I told you that your mother wanted to have
an abortion when you were a fetus just because she didn t want to raise you, didn t have the time
for you, or the money. Or didn t want the responsibility that came with having a child. What if I
told you that half of the women that get pregnant in the U.S. today have abortions, and their main
reason is most likely because it might interfere with their work, education, or relationships. Which
is selfish. If you think about it, they think that the the baby inside them means nothing. They don
t deserve to live a happy life or a life at all. Also they think it s their body, but it s not, it s the baby
s body too. This controversial topic has been an a highly debated argument for many years, whether
it s ethical to kill your unborn child or or not! Also the fact that the rate is growing tremendously.
Abortions first started in the 1820s. At that time, women knew that they were and are killing their
fetusor embryo. Some women are not ready to become parents to take the responsibility. Personally,
I think that having an abortionis morally wrong because you are killing an unborn fetus or
embryo, while it is barely starting to develop. First of all, abortions have been becoming a
conflicting issue during the past several years. The first reason why you shouldn t have an
abortion is because you cannot deprive someone of life and of civil rights. Just because they don t

methods of justification are expressed through Corazon Aquinos rise to presidency. This can be

Marcos used this so he could arrest quickly without the need to trial. However, for the public, the
abolishment of their individual rights is a violation of justice. People even started to suspect
Ferdinand Marcos as being the culprit of the Plaza Miranda bombing. The suspension of Habeas
Corpus threw the public into a frenzy. Multiple cases were filed, including a petition to return the
writ of Habeas Corpus by Benigno Aquino Jr., Corazon Aquino s husband. The case was called
Aquino V. Enrile; Enrile was the name of the national defense secretary. The petitioners were
arrested and the case favored Enrile due to a clause in the constitution stating, he [the president]
may suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus, or place the Philippines or any part thereof

The Horizontal World By Debra Marquart Summary
A State of Trickery: Debra Marquart s Response to the Upper Midwest
Debra Marquart, in The Horizontal World, takes the reader through her life in North Dakota,
travelling all the way back to between the years of 1885 and 1911 when her immigrant, Russian
grandparents, first arrived in America. Marquart, from a more modern point of view, feels like her
grandparents were deceived by a facade that enveloped the Midwest claiming that the area is not as
exciting as the media made it out to be. She uses intense diction to condemn the state, proves the
deceitful tendencies of the North Dakota through juxtaposition, and manipulates the pathos of the
reader by triggering sympathy for the incoming settlers.

Unfortunately for Marquart s grandparents, North Dakota was not only disappointing in terms of
vividness, but it is also overvalued by the media. Entertainment describes a kind of false facade
in correspondence with North Dakota. This is a state where directors get their actors to be
blond, fresh faced and midwestern in order to make their descent into ruthless behavior in places
like Los Angeles and New York all the more tragic . Even the people already living there are so
monotone that film writers make characters midwestern for shock value. Because everyone
knows how boring the people are in North Dakota, when characters in entertainment begin to
meet their downfall, it is actually seen as a surprise, as if everyone in North Dakota are idols.
By juxtaposing midwestern women with the adventurous cities of New York and Los Angeles,
Marquart successful shows the contrast of the secluded and undesired area of North Dakota.
Marquart shows the difference between the point of view of Keillor s Lake Wobegon, from A
Prairie Home Companion, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all
the children are above average and the film Fargo, the macabre land of murder by wood chipper .
Although the two stories make North Dakota seem like an attractive, exciting place, unfortunately,
these two tales are just myths nothing more. The real North Dakota claims to have easy inclines

The Giftof the Magi we meet Della and Jim Young, a husband and wife that make sacrifices to
buy each other a Christmas gift. The story takes place at the turn of the century in a New York
City apartment, and deals with many themes such as love, poverty, and sacrifice. It is one of
over 600 short stories Henry wrote in his lifetime, and was first published in a New York
newspaper in 1905. Henry started writing short stories while in prison for embezzlement as a
way to support his daughter. Ironically, the story does not seem to reflect Henry s luck with
love and relationships. After years of fighting alcoholism, mental illness, and financial problems,
Henry died in of cirrhosis of the liver in 1910 (imdb.com). One of the points made is that Jim
and Della have the gift of true love. We see Della s love for Jim by what motives her to want to
buy a nice gift. She did not want it to empress the neighbors, or to out give Jim. She simply
wanted Something fine and rare and sterling something just a little bit near to being worthy of the
honour of being owned by Jim. We also see

Casey At Bat Analysis
In the poem Casey at Bat and story David and Goliath, a comparison of David and Casey shows
differences and similarities. Here is how they are both alike. Casey and David are both alike
because they both had a battle and they felt like they were going to win that battle. I know this
because in the articles it said that the people knew that Casey was going to hit the ball and if the
people believe that means that Casey would believe. It also said in one of the articles that David
felt like he was going to win because he had Godon his side. So if David believed that he was going
to win because of God and Casey believed he was going to win because of the people cheering for
him that means that they both have a reason to feel like they are... Show more content on

In Casey up to Bat his battle was to hit the ball and he struck out. In David and Goliath David s
battle was to kill Goliath and he did. If one struck out and the other killed a giant that means that
one lost their battle and the other didn t. Another way I think they are different is because Casey
boasted and David did not. In Casey up to bat it said that Casey said that pitch isn t my style. In
David and Goliath it said that David said that he was going to win because God was on his side.
This proves that Casey boasted and David did not because if you watch something go by you
think that it s not good enough then that is boasting because not everything is going to be
perfect. David did not boast because he had a reason to think that he was going to win and he didn t
act like he was all that. The last reason why I think they are different is because David was judged
in a bad way and Casey was judged in a good way. In David and Goliath it said that David s
brothers called him a brat. Casey was judged in a good way because in Casey up to bat it said
that everyone thought that he was going to hit. If you get called a brat that is offensive so that
would be a bad judgement. If everyone believes that you are going to hit the baseball that would be
a good judgement because people trust you.In the poem Casey at Bat and story David and Goliath,

Power And Control In The Visit By Frank Durrenmatt
Well known writer, Friedrich Durrenmatt, in his drama, The Visit, conveys the idea in which
Claire Zachanassian embodies aggregate power and control, and she uses those features to
dehumanize the people of Gullen throughout the play. Durrenmatt s purpose is to illustrate that
money can buy power, and power is what leads to all disorder and chaos. He adopts a striking and
staggering tone in order to express how humanity is so easily purchased by mere paper. Claire
Zachanassian symbolizes power by frightening and intimidating the people of Gullen into doing her
bidding and dirty work. Claire holds herself throughout the play as though she is better than any,
and everyone around her, and that is continuously publicized throughout the entirety... Show more

When Claire, and Koby and Loby are talking to the butler about what happened to the two men,
they stated, The lady tracked us down, the lady tracked us down. She gave us to Toby and Roby.
She gave us to Toby and Roby. {They} castrated and blinded us. Castrated and blinded us.
(Durrenmatt). By doing this, Claire shows that her money can justly buy anything, literally.
Because The Pair lied to the court many years before about falsely sleeping with her, she decided
to make them pay. When she figured out she was pregnant, she was confused and helpless. Alfred
Ill, supposedly, put Koby and Loby up to a bet offering the two money if they lied and said that
they slept with Claire. When this statement from the two men was put into question, everyone in
town turned against Claire and shunned her. She was forced to leave town and hide from the shame
everyone thought she should have had. Claire stated, I became a prostitute. The courts verdict
turned me into one. She was condemned to misery, and she wanted to make anyone who made her
feel that way, to

Persuasive Essay On Kangaroos
Good Afternoon
Australia s most iconic marsupial, the Kangaroo, holds a place on our coat arms, currency, severe
sports teams and is our main attraction for tourists, who believe we ride Kangaroos to school.
However, the overpopulation of the animal has led to a long and exasperating debate of whether
Kangaroo s should be culled or harvested .
Culling is commonly referred to the as reducing a population by selective slaughter. It sounds quiet
inhumane when you put it that way, however Kangaroo overpopulation has become a huge issue in
recent years.
While Kangaroos are native Australian animals, they are overpopulated and are a threat to the
environment. In an editorial, published by The Herald Sun, it was estimated that there were about ...

According to the Herald Sun a humane cull is far preferable to a slow death through starvation. It is
more inhumane to condemn these animals to a slow and painful death, than to control the
Kangaroo population in a way that is quick and causes minimal pain.
During a Queensland drought, it was reported by the ABC that a council worker, Chad McLachlan
would drag out roos every morning from underneath buildings, machines or other recreation centres,
due to starvation. Overpopulation of Kangaroos means that they won t have enough bush land to
live on, therefore many Kangaroos will starve to death in a slow manner. Now that is cruel.
The process of becoming a Kangaroo harvester is a lengthy one. The harvesters must undergo
training which is followed by a license. They must adhere to the strict guidelines laid out in the
Federal Government document Code of Practice for the Humane Shooting of Kangaroos , which
was created by the help of the RSPCA.
Although, overpopulation is one of the main reasons to harvest Kangaroos, one of the many
benefits of Kangaroo culling include Australia s economy boost. Kangaroos could form the basis of
an extended meat and leather production industry in

Compare And Contrast Ancient Romes And Roman Slavery
When you hear the word slavery, the image of the horrendous deed that was the American
enslavement of Africans most likely comes to mind. But, slavery goes much further back than the
early 1800 s of agricultural America. The ancient Romans had slaves, but it differed fromAmerican
enslavement. It can be a common idea that American slaveryand Roman slavery werealmost the
exact same, but that is not the case (Fragments). By comparing the two types of slavery, the ideacan

After the cotton gin was invented, the economy in the south boosted after it had fallen due to
the exhaustion of tobacco and slavery grew again. Families were separated, people were worked
and beat to death, and freedoms were stripped away. Slavery in America was cruel and would
lead to the physical and mental division in the United States.Families on plantations lived in
small barns called quarters that did a very poor job of protecting against the elements (Costly).
Slaves were fed very little and the quality of the food would sometimes not even be suitable for
animals (Costly). Slaves were also required to live by a set of laws called Slave Codes which
outlined what a slave could and could not do and the punishment for breaking the said code
(Costly). Jobsincluded weaving, cotton picking, harvesting sugar, tobacco and coffee, cooking,
building railroads and butchering ( Black Peoples Of America Work Done By Slaves History ).
In 1777 northern states began to abolish slavery ( History Of Slavery ) butthe south would take
longer to do so, leading to the Civil War in 1861. After the Civil War ended and the Union
succeeded, the 13th amendment was passed and slavery was abolished. But that was not the end of
the racial inequality African Americans would facein America. Racial segregation would start its

Crime Rates In Prison Case Study
A.Sample: 268 incarcerated male adult offenders in five federal prisons in Quebec.
B.Strong: a random sample from the five prisons was selected, so no biases present. Variation in
the type of federal prison also allows for a wider range of participants rather than focusing solely on
prisoners in minimum or maximum security prison. Focused on inmates who were involved in
money orientated crimes so it targets a specific population of the prison population.
C.Weak: Only male offenders who were incarcerated are in sample, so males who committed
crimes after being mentored, and who were not caught are not accounted for in the sample. Only
five prisons were selected so the data is not generalizable to the country, maybe generalizable to the
province. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Cynical Streets: Neighborhood Social Processes and Perceptions of Criminal Injustice
A.Sample: 689 African Americans from 39 neighborhoods and this sample was taken from data

B.Strong: Specific characteristics such as economic level and racial composition were desired and
the people in the sample are representative of who the study aimed to look at. 72% of families in
Iowa contributed to the study.
C.Weak: It is not stated how the Family and Community Health Study went about getting their
sample. Only two states data was looked at and only a few locations within those states so the
generalizability is extremely limited. Only around 60% of families contributed to the study in
Georgia. I personally believe the compensation for participating in the study was particularly high,
so people may have participated solely for the compensation therefore not taking the study seriously.

are not generalizable to all African Americans in similar economic and demographic situations

High Scores On Safety Standards
Scores on most of the items in this dimension are high. High scores represent a positive attitude
towards safety. The lowest score observed was on PA7 which questions about trade off between
getting a task completed and doing it by the book. With a mean score of (3.72) it shows
disagreement among respondents as to how a task is completed according to their job. For
instance, ATC respondents show that half of them agree there is a trade off between getting a task
done and doing it by the book, while the other half disagree with the statement. The highest score
observed was (4.75) in PA1 which questions about safety procedures making their job safer. This

(3.82) which questions if participants are familiar with getting a job done without looking at the
manual or written procedures.
1.3Summary of discussion
All scores in the items shows a general positive motive towards safety. However, there are a few
showing the opposite. For instance, 34% of the participants agreed with the statement I will take
shortcuts to get a task done. This is a high number for a high risk industry, especially where human
error is cited as major causal factor in accident occurrence. Airlines and other stakeholders in the
Nigerian aviation industry need to encourage employees regarding such type of behaviour.

Success Extended Definition
Success relies on how high we, as individuals, set our standards. Everyone has their own idea and
vision of what success is. My definition for success is an accomplishment. First, when I state that
success is an accomplishment I mean any type of achievement. Whether it is overcoming
destitutions or becoming rich and famous, if it is a goal that has been attained, then it is a triumph.
Second, a successful person that I absolutely have to mention is Michael Clifford. He is famous
and a quite wealthy performer, but he has succeeded as a person he has conquered mental and
physical distresses. Last, my mother is a triumph in the rawest way. She has survived and fought
through multiple troublesome issues that most peoplewould not be able to. Though... Show more

Victory always depends on a person s standard and these are mine. First of all, success is any variety
of accomplishments. Honestly, I see getting out of bed in the morning and going to school is a
success. It all depends on how situations are views and that is how view them. Carrying on, I see
many people are deemed successes, but Michael Clifford is a success in every way. He has
defeated hardships, he has a high income job that he loves, and he is content with whatever he gets
as well. Then again, my mother is also a large success. My lovely mother, has conquered and faced
hardship after hardship while at the same time raising three daughters. That is definitely a feat to be
reckoned with and she conquered it spectacularly. What she has done is a triumph. Though in the
end, standards and how high they stand determines

A Lost Goodnight for Broken Boys
What happened to us, Quentin? Running my eyes across your pale face, staring into your cold,
blue eyes, I block out the gentle voices of the EMTs that are telling me to let go. There s too
much noise, too many hands trying to take you from me. I can t breathe, can t let you go. I won
t let them. I won t. If they do, you ll really be gone and the last piece of me that s left will crack. I
ll be broken. Why didn t you come to me? A weak whine of protest leaves my throat as I try to
pull you tighter to me; to keep you with me. No, I cry, no. Shoving at the bodies that are
surrounding me, suffocating me. Go away, I sob. Don t take him away. My baby boy, my
fiancГ©, just mine. The ring covering your delicate finger glints from the sunlight pouring
through the curtains. Only a week away and you d have been Mr. Caine. Mr. Mr. Oakley Caine.
What did I do wrong? Could I have fixed it? I can t even remember what we fought about, but I
guess that was all you needed. Just one more reason to go. One more person to add to the list of
those that you think don t care about you. But...I do care. God, do I care. I should have never left
you alone, but I thought it was what you wanted. You told me to go, so I went. I m so sorry. You

brighter than the rest, who deserved everything under the sun and more. I wish I could ve given

Richard Nixon Inaugural Speech
Every president has a specific vision on how to influence America with their policies. Being the
only president to resign from the presidency makes one wonder what did Nixon want to
accomplish as president. During, every president s first term, they have to figure out how to
navigate the office. The inaugural speech, usually, gives the American people an idea of what the
president plans to do, for America. As president, Nixon accomplished many things and strived to
fulfil the promises in his inaugural speech.
The greatest honor history can bestow is the title of peacemaker a quote from Richard Nixon s
inaugural address. Peace and unity were the main points of the speech. Nixon focused on creating
international peace, with all nations, as well as peace within America. Nixon felt that unity was
the only way for people to live on Earth. Not only was peace a huge factor in Nixon s speech,
benefits for American citizens was important to him, as well. Although, Nixon never stated how he
planned to accomplish things, he did clearly state that he wanted to improve healthcare, education
and attain better housing. Overall, this speech was a beacon of hope for the American people to
look forward to.
Nixon was one of the few presidents who have had a second term. Therefore, Nixon had two
inaugural speeches. Nixon s second speech was very similar to the first speech. Instead, of
focusing on how to be at peace, Nixon assured, the country, that everything was serene and we
needed to

  • 2. Augusta Ada Research Paper Augusta Ada Byron was born in London in the year 1815. Her mother, Annabelle, took Ada as an infant due to her husband s treatment of her. Ada s father, Lord Byron, an influential British poet, wanted a glorious boy and made no effort to have a relationship with his daughter. As a young girl, Ada was often sickly, but had highly developed skills in mathematics and technologies. She was close with her tutor, Mary Somerville, a respected scientist, and was introduced to Charles Babbage through her in June of 1833. He later invited her to view his prototype for the Difference Engine a mechanical calculator that could solve equations as complex as polynomial functions. Lovelace was amazed by the machine and visited Babbage as very often. Babbage was impressed by her mind and analytic skills, calling her The Enchantress of Number. ... Lovelace was prompted by Charles Wheatstone, Babbage s friend, to translate the transcription to English. While doing so, she added her own extensive set of notes to the translation, which were then published in Richard Taylor s Scientific Memoirs. Her notes, labeled A through G, explained the purpose of the Analytic Engine, how it was more for general computing than solely calculation, and contained an algorithm which allow the Engine to compute Bernoulli numbers. This algorithm is generally considered the first computer program, and Lovelace the first computer programmer. Unfortunately, the Engine was never completed, so the program was never ... Each section of the business had its own Director who reported to the President of the corporation Bjorn Westerlund. Westerlund was responsible for Nokia first going into telecommunications. Over the next twenty years Nokia dabbled in telecommunications but in 1990, Nokia left everything else behind to focus on telecommunications, selling off the other sections of the corporation. Nokia Corporation has grown from a small mill in Finland to being listed as the 14th most valuable global brand in the Interbrand/BusinessWeek Best Global Brands list of 2011. The way this company has grown is through a series of innovations which we will look at in this report. Why is Nokia Innovative? • 4. The Rocky Mountains Lander s Peak Describe: Albert Bierstadt s The Rocky Mountains, Lander s Peak (1863) and David P. Bradley s, Indian Country Today (1997) are created by different authors, possible for different reasons, but they have a similar subject matter. They both picture nature. Bierstadt s painting shows the landscape of the Rocky Mountains, hence the name. Pictured are rolling valleys, rugged mountains, and what looks like a civilization of Native Americans. On the other hand, Bradley s painting is an example of how modern India is viewed through his eyes. Instead of beautiful hills and mountains, he illustrates roads, food trucks, vehicles, etc. Also, in the background what seems to be airplanes are pictured, as well as, construction. The paintings have their... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Bierstadt uses gradient features of color in his painting. He has lighter colors in the back of his painting and darker colors in the front. This allows the painting to be subtle and aid viewers in realizing the subject matter. Bradley, unlike Bierstadt, uses variety in his work of art. His painting is made up of high intensity. He uses vivid colors and even shapes to express the subject matter. The different colors used catches the eyes of those who view it. The artists chose excellent colors to go with their paintings. Interpret: Bierstadt s painting shows the Rocky Mountains in the 1800 s. The beautiful scenery expresses how stunning the world was during that time. There were waterfalls, tee pees, and sprouting trees. The Earth has been bruised and beaten. The scenery illustrated in this painting is rare. However, Bradley s painting seems to show what landscapes are like presently even if it was created in the late 1900 s. The construction, the entertainment by the dancers express that Bradley believes that India is more of a tourist spot now. It is not appreciated for its beauty anymore. People come to watch the traditional dances, not participate. They come and go, they do not usually settle. But he does show a person shooting an arrow at the billboard that says, Land Development . So, this shows that maybe some people want the authenticity of India back, maybe even the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 6. Jealousy In Othello Analyzing William Shakespeare s Othello There are many different emotions like sadness, happiness, and joyfulness just to name a few that people can experience. One of the most powerful and sometimes dangerous emotions is Jealousy. Jealousy is a powerful emotion that most people experience at some point in their life. However, not everyone is affected in the same way. Some people are filled with insecurity. While others are filled with fear. Most people experience anger. In William Shakespeares Othello the audience learns through the characterization of Othello and Iago, the symbolism of the handkerchief, and through Othello denying that he is jealous we learn that jealousy can make people behave irrationally in certain circumstances. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Othello s mom gave Othello the handkerchief, and told him to give it to his wife if he should be married. This quote indicates that the handkerchief was then given to Desdemona as a precious valuable item and losing it would be a catastrophe like no other. Lynda Boose argues that [t]he handkerchief that will become to Othello evidence of her lust [where instead it] has always been evidence of exactly the opposite nature (Boose 270). This indicates that the handkerchief was a sign of her love but will transform into a sign of her adultery. Although the audience knows that Othello is jealous. Othello himself denies that he has been consumed by jealousy, and that he has been behaving irrationally. Othello claims that it is the cause, [his] soul. Let me not name it to you, you chaste stars. It is the cause. Yet I ll not shed [Desdemona s] blood (Shakespeare 5.2.1 3). Denying that he is jealous Othello claims that he is not going to kill Desdemona as of this moment. He also insist that the reasoning to killing Desdemona would be because of justice, and not jealousy. After killing Desdemona Othello argues with Emilia that Cassio did top [Desdemona]. Ask thy husband [Iago] else O, I were damned beneath all depth in hell [b]ut that proceed upon just grounds (Shakespeare 5.2.139 142). • 7. Surpassing America There are already many articles about how Asian countries are surpassing America in education, but what about Finland? Finland, which is about the size of Minnesota, is top ranking in math, science, and language arts. Despite this, Finland s education standards are more laid back than ones in America. America s educationsystem is lackluster in comparison to other countries, but it s fixable by recognizing the problem, observing other countries, and updating our own standards. America s test scores are barely average compared to other countries. 470,000 15 year old students took the OECD test in math, science, and language arts. The test was scored on a 1,000 point scale. The U.S average score in math was 487 meaning that 24 out of the 34 countries ranked higher. This includes Finland who scored a 541. In science, America scored an average of 502 which placed them at 17th. Once again Finland was a leader on the scoreboard. Finally, in language arts the U.S scored a 500 putting them in 14th place. Finland still ranked higher; they were in the ranks with places like Shanghai. The brutal fact here is there are many countries that are far ahead of us... this should be a massive wake up call , says U.S Education Secretary Arnie Duncan (Hechinger). • 8. Women In Cannery Lives Sean Gibson HIS 10 B 15 August 2016 Since the Gilded Age, workers, especially women, had been fighting for union rights and workers rights. By the 1930s, unions had made substantial progress in the industrial workforce. The American Federation of Labor (AFL) had been around for more than fifty years, and it organized labor movements and union groups. However, the AFL did not recognize the problems of agricultural jobs.1 Cannery Women, Cannery Lives, by Vicki RuiМЃz, shows the poor working and living conditions of Mexican women who worked in agriculture and explains how and why they created and structured unions in agriculture, without the initial support of the AFL. Seventy five percent of the workforce was made up of women,9 and most of these women were Mexican. These Mexican women faced extremely harsh treatment while working. The three biggest problems these women had that they wanted to get rid of by unionizing were the pet system, when male employees and supervisors would favor women they liked or went out with,10 the piece rate system, when workers get paid by their work accomplished, not by the hour, and the supervisors, who would constantly watch the women and make sure they were working hard.11 Women particularly hated these three systems, especially since they are discriminatory. Also, the piece rate system would make it hard to get consistent pay. All of the strenuous work would of course make the workers sore, and soon their workload would slowly start to decrease. Furthermore, it is hard to design the piece rate system in such a way that women would get about the same amount of money men who are paid by the hour. In addition to discrimination, the jobs were often dangerous, as Julia Luna Mount stated, After work, my hands were red, swollen, and I was on fire! 12 These working conditions inevitably made the labor force create the United Cannery, Agricultural, Packing, and Allied Workers of America (UCAPAWA). In the third and fourth months of pregnancy, the skin of the fetus begins to develop from a transparent layer into a waxy coating, which is called the basal layer, or middle layer. The buckling and folding of this skin is part of the uniqueness of fingerprints (Johnston, 2015). The ridges on the fingers are the first identifying marks that form on a fetus skin. How each individual structure is formed is determined by what they touch in the womb and the fetus exact position in the womb (Johnston, 2015). Research Paper On Escoffier Auguste Escoffier King of Chefs 1846 1935 Auguste Escoffier, The Chef of Kings and The King of Chefs, was born in the Riviera town of Villeneuve Loubet, France, on October 28, 1846. His career in cookery began at the age of 12 when he entered into apprenticeship in his uncle s restaurant, in Nice. Escoffier went on to another apprenticeship at the age of 19, this time working in Paris. Escoffier was the first great chef who worked directly for the public throughout his entire career. Prior to this, the great French chefs were to be found in the kitchens of royalty and nobility, as was CarГЄme, or at work in private clubs, like Alexis Soyer. Escoffier was never in private employ. From his apprenticeship in his uncle s restaurant in Nice to his collaborations with Cesar Ritz, which marked the height of his career, Escoffier s talents were in the service of cooking and his customers. Among those customers were kings, heads of state, and many stars of the London and Paris Opera. His career is legendary, in terms of the hotels in which he worked (among them the Savoy and Carlton of London), the contributions that he made to the aesthetics of gastronomy, and, perhaps most importantly, the revolutionary changes he made in upgrading the culinary arts. ... The Jack The Ripper Murders The Jack the Ripper Murders happened in the East End of London in 1888 and, although the Whitechapel Murderer was only a threat to a small section of the community in a small part of London, the murders had a huge impact on society as a whole. A thing that puzzles a lot of people about this ancient murderspree is why the crimes are still so famous, even though over a hundred and twenty five years has gone by since they occurred. If Jack the Ripperonly had five victims, then he wasn t a particularly prolific murderer compared to others that have come since then. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The most famous of these letters, and the one that gave the murderer his name that ensured the longevity of this legend was the missive sent to the Central News Office in late September, 1888. This was the infamous Dear Boss Letter, that bore the chilling, though accurate signature, Jack the Ripper. Press coverage of this letter led to a veritable avalanche of similar correspondence that resulted in the police investigation almost being brought to melt down. Yet the likelihood is that the person responsible for the murders was not the same person who sent this letter. It was believed by police officers at the time and the majority of modern day experts are unanimously in agreement, that the letter was the work of a Journalist. Despite the fact that no one was ever brought to justice or charged with the murders, there have been more than a hundred named suspects who may or may not have been Jack the Ripper. Complication of Amputation and Edema Title Here Amputation is the general term describing a condition of disability resulting from the deliberate surgical removal of a part of the body, a limb, or part of a limb (Bowker Michael, 1992). Limb loss can be a congenital condition, the result of traumatic injury, or a surgical procedure to treat disease (Clawson, 2009). Clawson posits that the majority of amputations in the United States are the result of vascular disease caused by diabetes (p. 393). In cases of traumatic amputation, adjustment and adaptation is more difficult than for people who have had time to prepare, such as may occur with diabetes. Amputations may be performed at any level in the upper extremities such as the digits, the hand, or the arm, or in the lower extremities such as the toes, the foot, or the leg. Appropriate rehabilitation is a vital element to helping people with lower limb amputation learn to walk and function again and live high quality lives (Hanley et al., 2004). Literature Review In the United States, the majority of amputations are performed in order to treat complications of peripheral vascular disease; the greater numbers involve the lower limbs (Clawson, 2009). According to Bowker and Michael (1992), disease is the most frequent reason for amputation in adults age 50 or older, while trauma is the usual cause of amputation in younger individuals. Upon Westley s death, Buttercup reluctantly agrees to marry Prince Humperdinck, who seems to have a plan of his own. After using his sword fighting skills and strength to outwit Inigo, the Spanish swordsman, and Fizzik, the giant, he then uses his wit to kill Vizzini, Buttercup s capturer. Once Buttercup is able to identify Pirate Roberts as Westley, they continue on their journey, only to be thwarted by Prince Humperdinck, Count Rugen, and their men. Buttercup is then tricked to believe that they let Westley go free, even though they have him tortured and eventually killed. In need of his skills and strength, Fizzik and Inigo miraculously save Westley in order to seek revenge on Inigo s father s killer, Count Rugen. The three of them then break into the castle, Inigo gets his revenge, and save Buttercup, riding off on four white horses. As in every plot line, there are various conflicts that occur in this film. • 14. Causes Of The German PeasantsRevolts The crop failure of the early sixteenth century created intense economic and later physical warfare between the German peasantry and that of the princes and nobility. However, it was the oppression and unjust laws created by such authorities later that actually initiated the riots and plundering done by the peasants on the property of the nobles. This aggression, backed originally by Lutheran principles, led to several mixed responses by both Germanic nobles and religious figures. By the end of the German Peasants War, the economic conditions of such peasants did moderately change, however, it was the lay rulers and other religious figures that benefited, authoritatively, from the rebellion. Furthermore, the main cause of the German peasants revolts was that of the oppression by lords and princes in conjunction with coerced serfdom that was occurring during this time. As seen in Document Two, Sebastian Lotzer, a lay preacher, acknowledges the true start of the revolts as the oppression felt by peasants to complete their dues without proper compensation. This representation of unjust treatment is communicated by the spokesmen of all peasants, the Peasant Parliament, which states that the peasants would not reject authority if such is fair and reasonable . This call for an end to serfdom is realized in Document Eight when Lorenz Fries, an advisor to a noble, has an epiphany that the oppression done by the nobles will lead to a troublesome outcome . They were under the impression that people of color were less valuable than white people, some even believing that they weren t human. Something people don t realize is that groups like that are still around today, and just as active as ever. Hate groups, and just random unorganised hate crimes are just as real as me and you, and they are still an active threat. Hate Crime is relevant, and as a society, we should be doing our best to snuff out the flames of prejudice and resentment that burn in the hearts of anyone willing to participate in such unjust behavior. This kind of activity is not only hurtful emotionally, but sometimes, it turns to violence. Innocent people getting picked off the street simply because of their beliefs, who they love, or the color of their skin. This is something that nobody should stand for, especially now, in this constantly progressing world. All in all, Hate Crimes are a real problem, and in order to stop injustice such as this, we need to work together as human beings to accept people, regardless of who they are. Hate crimes are a type of felony that is directed at a certain group of people. Increasing awareness of hate crimes as a possible threat, to those of a young age especially, could help to control the number of people who participate in hate crimes, and those who are somewhat defenceless against them. • 18. The Reasons Of The Chesapeake And New England Colonies The Chesapeake and New England Colonies were originally settled in the early 1600 s. The motivations behind these settlements led to their subsequent economies and societies which became part of the foundation of these successful colonies. The Chesapeake Colonies needed cheap labor for their tobacco plantations and the New Englandarea sought freedom to practice religion without restrictions from the English crown. The Virginia Company initially colonized the Chesapeake area of Jamestown as a search for gold and as an exploration of the area s natural resources. Exporters typically prefer conservative measures when managing foreign receivables. Because of this, there is a tendency to lean on the side of caution. Three reasons for this conservatism are described below: 1. Fluctuation in exchange rates: Exchange rates of currencies of different countries fluctuate continuously and in a very random manner with the change in the demand and supply state of the concerned currency. That can translate the profit from the international business transaction into a loss or vice versa. Thus, the exporters dealing with foreign receivables should be conservative to avoid this risk. 2. The difference in the legal system: Different countries have different legal rules and policies for dealing with and managing the foreign accounts receivable. It is mostly harder for a business to pursue any overdue amounts from an international business due to the difference in the legal system. It is another reason for the conservative approaches of the exporters. 3. In their work, Ries and Trout (1986) concluded that, Positioning starts with the product. A piece of merchandise, a service, a company, an institution, or even a person . . . • 29. The City Of The Mercantile City 1.Within the last few centuries, cities as have evolved to take on the features that are used today to identify the makings of what is a great city. As cities shifted from the concept of the political city to the mercantile city and finally the industrial city, traditional political, economic and social patterns began to take on new forms and functions that transformed them to become the urbanized spaces they are now. Major early cites began in the form of the political city, a place that was the functioning center of the state or empire. Often populated by the bureaucratic ruling class, the city was regarded as a space for elite. As the apex of the state, cities served as nexus of trade. A crossing ground for people, goods, and ideas. As this network of exchange transforms the common concept of the city, merchants slowly gained status and were allowed to move in. Gradually the once exclusively aristocratic setting evolved into what became known as the mercantile city where the market became the core of the city. No longer primarily a place of consuming elites, but a hub of new complexity, cities not only drew in commodities in the form of imports but also dynamic and profound ideas and people that reshaped cities as they were seen previously giving rise to Henri Lefebvre s notion of heterogeneity. On the other hand, historical analysis doesn t support this claim because Gage s injury didn t have enough influence on the development of this practice. There was criticism of Gage s story including the doubts on accuracy between scientific and popular discourse from Australian psychologist Malcolm Macmillan. • 35. Persuasive Essay Why An Abortion Is Wrong Why an Abortion is Wrong How would you feel, if I told you that your mother wanted to have an abortion when you were a fetus just because she didn t want to raise you, didn t have the time for you, or the money. Or didn t want the responsibility that came with having a child. What if I told you that half of the women that get pregnant in the U.S. today have abortions, and their main reason is most likely because it might interfere with their work, education, or relationships. Which is selfish. If you think about it, they think that the the baby inside them means nothing. They don t deserve to live a happy life or a life at all. Also they think it s their body, but it s not, it s the baby s body too. This controversial topic has been an a highly debated argument for many years, whether it s ethical to kill your unborn child or or not! Also the fact that the rate is growing tremendously. Abortions first started in the 1820s. At that time, women knew that they were and are killing their fetusor embryo. Some women are not ready to become parents to take the responsibility. Personally, I think that having an abortionis morally wrong because you are killing an unborn fetus or embryo, while it is barely starting to develop. First of all, abortions have been becoming a conflicting issue during the past several years. The first reason why you shouldn t have an abortion is because you cannot deprive someone of life and of civil rights. However, for the public, the abolishment of their individual rights is a violation of justice. People even started to suspect Ferdinand Marcos as being the culprit of the Plaza Miranda bombing. The suspension of Habeas Corpus threw the public into a frenzy. Multiple cases were filed, including a petition to return the writ of Habeas Corpus by Benigno Aquino Jr., Corazon Aquino s husband. The case was called Aquino V. Enrile; Enrile was the name of the national defense secretary. The petitioners were arrested and the case favored Enrile due to a clause in the constitution stating, he [the president] may suspend the privilege of the writ of habeas corpus, or place the Philippines or any part thereof under martial law. This case may have changed the public s reactions to the suspension of Habeas Corpus, but not their opinions about it. They may not declare petitions to restore their writ of Habeas Corpus, but they will certainly keep their ambiguous feelings about it. Once Corazon Aquino was elected president in 1986, she sought to restore democracy in the Philippines. One of Aquino s first actions as president was changing the Philippines constitution. Marquart, from a more modern point of view, feels like her grandparents were deceived by a facade that enveloped the Midwest claiming that the area is not as exciting as the media made it out to be. She uses intense diction to condemn the state, proves the deceitful tendencies of the North Dakota through juxtaposition, and manipulates the pathos of the reader by triggering sympathy for the incoming settlers. Unfortunately for Marquart s grandparents, North Dakota was not only disappointing in terms of vividness, but it is also overvalued by the media. Entertainment describes a kind of false facade in correspondence with North Dakota. This is a state where directors get their actors to be blond, fresh faced and midwestern in order to make their descent into ruthless behavior in places like Los Angeles and New York all the more tragic . Even the people already living there are so monotone that film writers make characters midwestern for shock value. Because everyone knows how boring the people are in North Dakota, when characters in entertainment begin to meet their downfall, it is actually seen as a surprise, as if everyone in North Dakota are idols. By juxtaposing midwestern women with the adventurous cities of New York and Los Angeles, Marquart successful shows the contrast of the secluded and undesired area of North Dakota. Marquart shows the difference between the point of view of Keillor s Lake Wobegon, from A Prairie Home Companion, where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average and the film Fargo, the macabre land of murder by wood chipper . Things and people we love and treasure above all, but sometimes we let the pressures from society dictate to us what the standards of a happy life is, and we forget what is really important. In the story The Gift of the Magi, O. Henry reminds us the nature of true wealth, true generosity , and true love. In The Giftof the Magi we meet Della and Jim Young, a husband and wife that make sacrifices to buy each other a Christmas gift. The story takes place at the turn of the century in a New York City apartment, and deals with many themes such as love, poverty, and sacrifice. It is one of over 600 short stories Henry wrote in his lifetime, and was first published in a New York newspaper in 1905. Henry started writing short stories while in prison for embezzlement as a way to support his daughter. Ironically, the story does not seem to reflect Henry s luck with love and relationships. After years of fighting alcoholism, mental illness, and financial problems, Henry died in of cirrhosis of the liver in 1910 (imdb.com). One of the points made is that Jim and Della have the gift of true love. We see Della s love for Jim by what motives her to want to buy a nice gift. Casey and David are both alike because they both had a battle and they felt like they were going to win that battle. I know this because in the articles it said that the people knew that Casey was going to hit the ball and if the people believe that means that Casey would believe. It also said in one of the articles that David felt like he was going to win because he had Godon his side. If one struck out and the other killed a giant that means that one lost their battle and the other didn t. Another way I think they are different is because Casey boasted and David did not. In Casey up to bat it said that Casey said that pitch isn t my style. In David and Goliath it said that David said that he was going to win because God was on his side. This proves that Casey boasted and David did not because if you watch something go by you think that it s not good enough then that is boasting because not everything is going to be perfect. David did not boast because he had a reason to think that he was going to win and he didn t act like he was all that. The last reason why I think they are different is because David was judged in a bad way and Casey was judged in a good way. In David and Goliath it said that David s brothers called him a brat. Casey was judged in a good way because in Casey up to bat it said that everyone thought that he was going to hit. If you get called a brat that is offensive so that would be a bad judgement.
