Failure of an MIS Essay
Failure of an MIS In the year1994, FoxMeyer was the fourth largest drug wholesaler in the United
States with an annual sales of approximately $5.1 billion. The company filled orders from thousands
of pharmaceutical companies with shipments of up to 500,000 items per day. However, in the same
year, due to rapid growth and consolidation of the pharmaceutical industry, FoxMeyer s management
was concerned about competition from the larger competitors. The threat imposed required drastic
measures. The whole industry competed on low profit margins. Therefore, FoxMeyer decided to stay
ahead of the competition by implementing a new information system.
Previously, the Information Technology department consisted of the Unisys mainframe, ... Show more

Conceptually, FoxMeyer s information system planned to conduct business with its customers on a
daily basis. FoxMeyer focused its value chain on activities in their business where competitive
strategies could be best applied. (Porter, 1985) However, the implementation was inconsistent with the
changing business environment. The new system caused problems at every step of implementation.
Problems ranged from inadequate time allocation for development, testing, debugging, lack of
interaction between management, systems personnel, consultants and low user involvement.
Initially, FoxMeyer s management were supportive and committed appropriate funding of $56 million
to develop and install the newly named Delta Information System. However, to build its new 340,000
square foot warehouse, FoxMeyer spent an additional $18 million. The company hired Anderson
Consulting, a leading international information systems consulting firm, both to advise them about the
project and to supply skilled personnel to construct the system.
Also, FoxMeyer purchased R/3, an inventory management software system from SAP AG, a giant
German software company. Although SAP had been designed to run on Digital Equipment
Corporation hardware, FoxMeyer purchased a Hewlett Packard Company client/server system at a
cost of $4.8 million. The vendor for the warehouse system was Pinnacle, a system not tightly
integrated with SAP R/3. (Caldwell,

Futility And Wilfred Owen s The Happy Warrior
Poets of WW1 use various poetic techniques such as metaphors, similes, imperatives, biblical
references, alliteration, rhetorical questions, personifications, sibilance, irony, ellipsis, contrast and
rhyming in their poetry to depict the horror and destruction caused by war, and send a powerful
message to their readers. Wilfred Owen s Futility and Dulce et Decorum Est , Siegfried Sassoon s
Suicide in the Trenches and Herbert Read s The Happy Warrior are all poems which reflect on this, as
well as depict the psychological and physical damage the war has on the young soldiers and convey a
profound pity towards them. The poem Futility , written by Wilfred Owen, incorporates many poetic
techniques to depict how the war pours lives into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the very beginning, Sassoon incorporates a sibilance, I knew a simple solider boy , used to draw
attention to what the soldier was like before the war, which is discussed throughout the first stanza.
The tense and tone of the second stanza change and discuss the happenings during the war and how
the soldier is struggling to deal with it, living in the winter trenches, cowed and glum . In the second
line of the stanza, Sassoon also uses an alliteration, to a create a more explicit picture. The third line
shows how Sassoon sees the soldier putting a bullet through his brain , which is also described using
an alliteration to create a longer lasting effect of horror. Sassoon ends the stanza by saying No one
spoke of him again , where he highlights what a dishonourable act this soldier s portrayed to have
committed. The third stanza develops an aggressive tone where Sassoon expresses his anger towards
the smug faced crowds at home Who cheer when s soldier lads march by as he believes that it was
there fault that this happened to the soldier. He incorporates a imperative and tells the smug faced
crowds to Sneak home as they are cowards. Sassoon also includes an aabb rhyme throughout the poem
which he has incorporated so the poem

A Visit From The Goon Squad Analysis
Every work of literature requires a theme for it to be worth reading. Jennifer Egan s A Visit from the
Goon Squad mainly presents the theme of ruin and redemption throughout the novel. This theme is
present alongside with other minor themes like the shift of American culture, and how the characters
self centered ways are crush by time. All of the major characters will find themselves at some sort of
low point in their lives throughout the novel. Jocelyn becomes addicted to drugs and spends a great
amount of her adult life going in and out of rehab; Benny will lose his record label contract and will
be seen as a failure by most of those still in the industry; and Sasha will show falling into ruin due to
her stealing addiction, self isolation from family, and lack of self love. The idea of ruin and
redemption is also present alongside the characters setting. Theses characters live in a post 9/11 New
York City, where the towers are destroyed, the streets and rivers are polluted, and surveillance is
amplified, making New York City reflect this theme in a mournful way. The same for the story
Goodbye, My Love , Ted goes to Italy, and notes the ways Naples is degrading. Theses images of ruin,
that the characters are consciousness of, are a representation of ruin in their own lives. Despite the self
destruction that each character faces throughout the novel, a counterbalance for the self destruction is
created when a sense of redemption is introduced. Two of the stories main

Forensic Evidence Paper
Forensic evidence is tangible evidence that is obtained from the crime scene and examined by utilizing
various scientific procedures to assist examiners in cracking a case. This Forensic evidence is obtained
at the scene of a crime and transported to a laboratory, where it is handled by specialists. Three types
of forensic and physical evidence are fingerprints, digital evidence and impressions.
When it comes to fingerprints, no two individuals are the same. This is just one of the many reasons to
as why fingerprints are so important when it comes to evidence. In addition, fingerprints are used to
assist in capturing the individual, who was at the crime scene when the crime was perpetrated.
Fingerprints are found on surfaces due to the friction ridges that are on each one of our hands (Nolo,

Fingerprints are found on surfaces due to the friction ridges that are on each one of our hands. Sweat,

in creating fingerprints on any kind of smooth surface that an individual may touch. Fingerprints are
used to assist in capturing the individual, who was at the crime scene when the crime was perpetrated.
In the same way as fingerprints, impressions are just as vital within a court case. Impression evidence
is critical to a case because they could confirm that a perpetrator was at the location where the crime
took place. Furthermore, tire marks are also vital to any case because they can assist in recognizing the
model of vehicle that was at the crime location. Furthermore, digital evidence is data gathered or sent

Civil War Was A Tragic War For America
On April 12, 1861 the Confederates bombarded Union soldiers at Fort Sumter, South Carolina. This
day is known in history as the day the Civil War started. While most of the battles were fought in
Virginia and Tennessee, the Civil War was fought in thousands of places. Some of the places other
than Virginia and Tennessee included the following: Pennsylvania, Texas, New Mexico and the
Florida coast ( Civil War Facts ). The last battle was fought at Palmito Ranch, Texas, on May 13,
1895, but the end of the war was on April 9, 1865 when Robert E. Lee surrendered the Confederate
army to Ulysses S. Grant. While the Civil War was a tragic war for America it was also a very
important war. The Civil War allowed the nation to reunite and the southern states weren t able to
secede. Also, slavery was put to an end, it wasn t officially outlawed by the 13th Amendment, but
slaves were set free at the ends of the war. The Federal Government proved itself supreme over the
states and industrialism began due to the increase of wartime production and creation of new
technology ( Effects of the Civil War ). These are just a few examples of how the Civil War affected
America. The Civil War also had a big influence on literature and various authors ,including Margaret
Mitchell, Michael Shaara, Bruce Canton, and Randall Fuller. The Civil War affected the writings of

How Does the Line Between High and Pop Culture Become...
In this essay I intend to explore what is meant by the terms popular culture and high culture. I will also
look at how the relationship between these two terms has become distorted and blurred over time. In
order to reinforce what I am saying about popular and high culture I will be using a range of examples
from the music industry to show how the line between high culture and popular culture has become
ambiguous. I will also call upon the work of John Storey to give my work an academic foundation.
Although Storey is the main academic I will be looking at, I will also include references to a number
of other academics who have written about popular culture and high culture.
The term popular culture is a particularly difficult one to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Once this is established, the format of the programme changes and viewers are coaxed in and
persuaded to vote for the contestant that they wish to stay in the competition. Even when the show has
finished, the viewers are urged to buy the records of the winning contestants. The person who benefits
the most from this is Simon Cowell, who takes a certain percentage of whatever the show makes
financially. This is also known as mass culture and sometimes commercial culture. Mass culture is a
form of culture which is produced purely to make a profit. The profit is made by exploiting the mass
members of the public into consuming a product (e.g. The X Factor). (Strinati; 1995)
This is a contradiction to the types of popular culture which are made by the people and for the people
. An example of this would be the services which are provided by the BBC (British Broadcasting
Corporation). T o start with, the BBC is a non profit organisation; in effect the money which it makes
is put back into the corporation and consequently used to make the services that the BBC provides.
Also, the BBC takes the majority of its funding from the public. Each household in the UK which
owns a colour television set must pay for a TV license, which currently costs £145.50
(http://www.bbc.co.uk/aboutthebbc/licencefee). The money from the public also goes towards
producing the BBC s TV, radio and online services. The BBC also is for the people as the majority of

packaging combination of series of integrated travel services which consist of an accommodation,
transport and other services as transfer and extras. By buying in bulk the operators are able to offer
this package at a cheaper price than the customer could obtain themselves. Therefore the operators are

Exxon Disaster Recovery
Introduction The wreckage caused by the Exxon Valdez oil spill which occurred nearly twenty eight
years ago on this date 3/24/1989 is often considered to be one of the most unsettling natural disasters
produced by human hands. Along with the disaster which will be covered in detail, this paper will
discuss the Control OBjectives for Information and Related Technology (COBIT). COBIT according
to Reynolds; is a set of guidelines whose goal is to align IT resources and processes with business
objectives, quality standards, monetary controls, and security needs. While Reynolds wrote about
disaster recovery as it applies to IT, this discussion will cover how Exxon used most of those
guidelines to alleviate some of the geologic destruction. Identifying ... Show more content on

Once a strategy is finalized the procedures should be performed repeatedly so that they become part of
rote memory. Doing so will curtail the loss of lives as well as business utility. The fifth phase of
developing a disaster recovery plan is to identify and train disaster recovery teams. George Reynolds
states, Three disaster recovery teams are needed the control group, the emergency response team, and
the business recovery team. The control group makes all pivotal decisions, directs and positions both
the emergency response team and business recovery team. Communication between all groups usually
from an emergency operations center is orchestrated by the control group. Members of these three
groups are selected by both experience and their ability to handle stressful situations. By training
employees in disaster recognition as well as response a semblance of order can be maintained while
the world is in complete tumult. Ultimately, the plan must be practiced as well as updated so that it is
effective as well as executable. Only through practice can you identify issues not initially addressed by

A Christian Worldview
Every person on earth has a mental reality, which we call worldview. It is what a person finds in
his/her world and it could be true or not. In other words it is putting together of all the things we
believe whether they are or not. It could be through education, observation, experience or just because
those we trust also believe. Every decision we make is based on the worldview we have developed.
A worldview, weather religious or non religious, has personal insight about reality and meaning, often
termed a life understanding . We all have worldviews which is our own discernment which develops
because we have sought some understanding of our own significance. The overall perspective from
which one sees and interprets the world could be collection beliefs about life and the universe held by
an individual or group. Human nature:
If we have survived adolescence, we understand the importance of the question who am I? Because

the nature of goodness. Are there any standards of judgment that are true whether the individual cares
to accept them or not? Are there standards for living that apply to everyone, or are values dependent
on individual choice alone? We also form beliefs about the nature of moral responsibility. When, if

The World Wildlife Fund For Nature
In the future I would like to become a leader in my field, a leader in helping heal and preserve the
world we live in, particularly working with endangered species. Helping to maintain, and boost their
numbers in the wild, as well as possibly working on a preservation, where I could work closely with
others to ensure that my grandchildren will be able to see wildlife. THis being said I believe that the
World Wildlife Fund for Nature is the best place for me to be. The World Wildlife Fund for Nature is
dedicated to saving endangered wildlife, conserving and protecting ecosystems around the world,
reducing the impact humans have on the earth, and teaching humans to work with nature. There are
many offices around the globe in operation, so there is a large chance I would be able to travel while
working with the Wildlife Fund for Nature, but there is not one singular headquarters, although the
central secretariat which is a close to a main headquarters as the organization gets, is in Gland

Analysis Of Paris Is Burning
COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE
Ava Morrow
History 3220
The United States in the 20th Century
November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid 1980 s, a number of efforts were initiated to bring
awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these
awareness campaigns were the documentaries Paris Is Burning and How to Survive a Plague . Both
films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT
people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries
demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance or at
least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles.
The movie Paris Is Burning is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the
African American and Latino gay and transgender communities of the ball culture of New York in the
mid to late 1980 s. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub culture of LGBT people
who walk or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the ostentatiously
arranged competitions in which participants, within a very specific theme, must walk while being
judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their dancing ability. Much
of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent members of this
drag scene. The film shows people of different gender identities and their varied methods of
expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty, and
homophobia.
How to Survive a Plague is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS epidemic
and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups. ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an advocacy group
which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS victims. The film used
archived footage of news coverage, interviews, protests, meetings, and conferences to chronicle the
struggles of AIDS activists from the start of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in New York City. It focused on
the efforts of these activists to obtain meaningful responses from medical

Russell Williams
Psycology
With regards to psychology there are many different theories and perspectives of the human mind
however, I will be focusing on Sigmund Freud s theory of human behavior. Freud believed that human
behaviour is driven by desires and the suppression of the same desires . Concerning the case of Col.
Russell Williams, he was a paraphilic; he stole lingerie and then took photographs of the women he
sexually assaulted. According to Freud s theory of human behavior, Williams did not possess the
ability to control his desires. He started off as a voyeur , but somehow transformed into a perverted
sex offender with a dark fixation for violence. Sigmund Freud compared the mind to an iceberg.

Marie France Comeau. The act he committed was more than just murder; it expressed his inner
desired for violent sexual control over women. Underneath Russell Williams exterior of success and
loyalty lay a dark appetite for power, control and superiority over women that eventually obliterated
the lives of Marie France Comeau and Jessica Lloyd. said Ian MacLeod from the Ottawa Citizen.
From the perspective of a feminist, Williams actions urge for greater awareness and advocacy to stop
the sexualized violence as well as the degradation of women across Canada and the world. It is too
easy to dismiss Williams acts as those of a deranged man and to perceive no need further response. If
anything, the Williams case must call us all to greater awareness and advocacy to end all sexualized
violence and degradation of women. said Alice Schuda.
There are various factors that may have occurred throughout Williams s life that could thoroughly
account for his sexually deviant behaviour. The feeling of male dominance such as his father or a
military superior could have led Russell to express his infuriation and dominance on the opposite sex.
Consequently, his inadmissible behaviour initiates friction between genders; this represents a feminist
theory of female maltreatment. During childhood, Russell Williams may have come across neglect
from a female care giver, which may have had an influence on his bizarre and sexually violent

The Dawn Of Retinal Prosthetic Devices
The Dawn of Retinal Prosthetic Devices
The war against human blindness has been ongoing affair since the beginning of time. Because the
origin of blindness varies from case to case, there is no single remedy and limited solutions are
available to the visually impaired. However, recent technological breakthroughs have allowed
scientists and doctors to test out possible solutions to a particular niche in the blindness spectrum:
degenerative retinal diseases. Degenerative retinal diseases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) attack
the retina exclusively. Because of that exclusivity, the other structures in the eye are typically not
compromised. Therefore, the use of a retinal implant or prosthetic device to restore functional vision is
possible. While it is important to note that retinal implants are still a pioneering technology, clinical
trials such as the Argus II clinical trial, and eye health care professionals alike are reporting promising
results. As such, it seems likely that retinal prosthetic devices will be a game changer in the future
treatment of degenerative retinal diseases since the devices can restore a form of vision to an
otherwise blind patient.

I am in belief that this ordinance would do more harm than good in the Fort Collins community.
Executive director, Gordon Combes, said this ordinance would force party hosts to be more diligent
about preventing underage consumption. The problem with this argument is that the party host cannot
often control if the teen consumes alcohol. If this ordinance were passed, party hosts will be inclined

Algorithms Abstract The increasing environmental crumbling cost of fuel and decreasing accessibility
of fossil fuels necessitates the optimization in hurtful emission alongside the fuel cost. One of the
ways to do as such is incorporating the renewable natural resources of energy in the existing power
system while satisfying all operational constraints. It is a highly constrained multi objective

correspondence and non fairness constraints to oblige the uncertainties of renewable Energy
Resources. In this paper a hybrid multi objective Backtracking search with sequential quadratic
programming optimization algorithm is proposed. The stochastic way of photovoltaic and wind energy
is displayed by Weibul probability distribution function with solar irradiance and wind speed being

A Look at the Hero Gilgamesh In all of the story of Gilgamesh, he is portrayed as a somewhat perfect
being. Being able to boast of his physical and godlike prowess among his subjects. However, do these
two qualities make him that much more of a hero than other ancient hero s tales? Or even a hero at all?
Gilgamesh s tales may have qualities that make him like a hero, yet compared to other definitions of a
hero he may not stand up to the test of those who, like him, have had their stories told for all ages. As
we examine Gilgamesh s story we will see that in physical, personal characteristics, and
accomplishments, he might be more of a hero than most of us think he is.
First we will examine what the story of Gilgamesh provides us to show ... Show more content on

This may be the reason why in this modern era we may not see him as the hero that the ancients did.
When we think of the modern hero we think of someone who is courageous, who fights evil for truth
and justice. In the ancient times we see that your accomplishments where what made you a legendary
hero not just what you fought for. We can see this especially in the first tablet of Gilgamesh. From the
first few lines of the text we see that his accomplishments are praised rather than his ethics. The book
says Exploring the furthest reaches of the Earth ... Reaching in his might Utanapishtim the Distant
one, Restorer of holy places (Foster, tablet I). Just by these few lines of the book we can see that one
was judged by their actions and accomplishments not the way they carried themselves. In the modern
age we like to see a hero who both has great accomplishments as well as a good moral stature. Which
is why we may not see Gilgamesh as one of our true heroes.
Gilgamesh as a whole is one of ancient time s classic heroes. He has all the qualities of the classic
Roman and Greek heroes. His many accomplishments do hold some credit as being of heroic value,
and even in our own time he does hold some heroic qualities. Heroes over time have had many
qualities and held many beliefs, but Gilgamesh has stood the test of time and has continued to be one
of the ancient world s oldest

setting and conflict. Act 1 also introduces most of the characters who are seen throughout this play,
like Polonius, the chief counselor to the new King Claudius. Polonius has a rather interesting character
development in this act, and this is evident through his relationship with his kids, his relationship with
the king, and his own self centeredness Polonius is described as an old man in this play, and that is
supported with the fact that he has a son who is in college in France. His other child is Ophelia, who
just so happens to be courting with none other than Prince Hamlet. To Polonius, both of his children
are each in a situation that requires tact and wit. Even though they both live separate lives from their
father, Polonius still ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Contrary to Laertes s, his lecture with her is about her relationship with Prince Hamlet, and believes
his vows, for they are brokers (1.3.136). He means by this that Hamlet is just a pimp that is leading
her to sinful acts. Polonius does not believe that he is being true when he says he loves Ophelia, and
has a right not to. After all, he is the Prince, and royalty usually marry royalty. He also believes that
Hamlet is just using her, and that she should Tender yourself [Ophelia] more clearly, / Or (not to crack
the wind of the poor phrase, / Running it thus) you ll tender me a fool (1.3.117 118). This statement
was said in the context that Hamlet is showing his tenders of affection to Ophelia, tenders meaning not
legal tender. The first part of this charge tells Ophelia that she should be careful with who she accepts
love from. This is a loving statement from father to daughter, and receives no reward when in the
shadow of the last part of this statement, which has three meanings. The second half of this charge
mostly means that she will either make herself look like a fool, or make Polonius look like a fool. This
meaning shows Polonius s true character, that he is concerned with himself most of all. Considering
his reputation, this claim is understood, yet still looked down upon by most readers. The other, and
more serious, meaning of Polonius s comment is that Ophelia will give Polonius a grandchild. This is
drawn from the alternate meaning of fool, which is a term of endearment toward babies. If Ophelia
had a child with the Prince, this would also make Polonius look bad because she would have done it
out of wedlock, and thus reveals his character even more. He is very self centered, and this is
supported by his behavior around the

Who Won The Battle Of Hastings
Duke William of Normandy won the battle because he was well prepared, had enough to time to
organize, rest, had good weapons and had a well trained army including archers, infantry and Calvary.
In total, William had approximately 7500 men ready to battle whereas King Harold unfortunately had
only 4500 voluntary village people who volunteered to battle and only five hundred professionally
trained soldiers. They prepared carefully for the battle. The Normans had knights on horseback
(Calvary) who were skilful fighters. William also was skilful and ambitious, and he was determined to
be King of England. In the Bayeux Tapestry, it shows William s army preparing for battle, embarking
huge ships filled with wood and supplies such as wine, weapons, and horses. There are also pictures of
the knights in full battle armour riding out to war. William s men also had better armour and weapons,
for example: the cavalry were all equipped with mail hauberk, there is some evidence that archers
used crossbows in addition to bows and arrows, some battle maces were also used along with spears
and swords, round shields and kite shaped shields. This meant that the Normans were more protected

though they were badly injured) had to race back to the south coast of England marching 250 miles
just to battle William thus resulting in Harold s soldiers feeling exhausted, tired and

Pros And Cons Of Should War Be Televised
Should War Be Televised? In the 1940 s there was an issue about deciding whether war should be
televised or it should be kept a secret from the people who are not in the war. A famous war that was
in the 1940 s was the Vietnam War. This is the first war that was broadcasted/televised. People were
trying to decide if they wanted to put war on television. This decision is still going on today. In the
following reading we will go over these questions: What causes war? What you will see in war? What
is the rating of the war? What are the pros for war? What are the cons for war? What did Mrs. Tyner s

Television stations will become more popular if we put war on television. Most likely, the war would
be covered on a news channel, like News Channel 3. That would boost the television s stations views
and ratings. With more ratings and reviews, this will make more people want to watch it and see why
so many people are watching it. This will cause them to become popular more and more over time.
With war on television, a chain reaction of views will occur and the television show would become
more popular. People will be curious about what is going on and they will find themselves watching

Pros And Disadvantages Of Globalization And Globalization
Long gone the days in which we find products that are locally made. Many of the items we own have
been across seas. Our country has become much more of an importing company than an exporting
one. We consume so many of the goods that countries overseas provide. As a country facing
controversy on economic growth it is important to get back to the concept of manufacturing our own
goods. Our world now is to globalize everything, especially if it increases our profits and lower our
production costs. Introduction to Globalization and Manufacturing Globalization refers to act on trade
across other nations. It basically is connecting with other markets to provide the goods. It is to make
one s own economic growth and make it global. It takes one business from being locally known to
being a worldwide item. Globalization has taken its shift to less developed countries. It has been given
less developed countries the chance to be part of the global market. The less developed countries in
return provide their services in production at a very low price. Every concept has a goal. In the case of
globalization it is primarily meant to take businesses a higher advantage of cutting their operating
costs and making more profit. Companies find alternative places that will provide the resources
needed to provide the final product. Globalization seems like a sweet deal to many businesses that are
trying to take their product worldwide. Many of the people that seem to be affected by this

Gandalf As An Epic Hero
Gandalf
The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets
of life for men to see by. Felix Adler
Although it is accurate, rarely has the epithet epic hero been used to describe Gandalf the Wizard. Epic
heroes are easily recognizable throughout History textbooks and simple searches via Google, but
many people just cannot put a finger on what exactly is an epic hero. The criteria is simple to say, yet
difficult to accomplish; do a tremendous deed or disservice and be identified by a well known or well
established piece of writing or section of History. In The Lord of the Rings, Gandalf embodies the
characteristics of an epic hero, such as traveling vast distances, battling supernatural foes, and having
humility.
Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Gandalf; in their time, these four figures traveled
over vast distances. Hannibal through Italy, Caesar through Gaul, Napoleon through Europe, and
Gandalf through Middle earth. However, Gandalf did not just travel the span of Middle earth, but the
span of life and death. In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf is pulled into a
dark chasm by a Luciferic creature, a chasm that has a symbolic meaning. He lands and defeats the
Balrog on a snowy mountaintop, but death creeps up on him, until it finally takes him over. Gandalf
then began a separate journey, one that took him away from life and entered the unknown. As the stars

Statement Of Purpose In Chemical Engineering
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The foundation of life and purpose is to find the Why in you.
The Why in you is purpose, knowing Who you are and
Why you are here is the meaning of life.
Sadness and tragedies come to pass, the eternal question of life is Why.
What am I doing here? What does all this mean?
To find yourself is the very reason you re born.
The wonder and glory of life is the birth of purpose.
There is no one separate from yourself.

renewing itself , what you ve made of my soul .
3. Political/Philosophical act
Mahmoud Darwish wrote A State of Siege in 2002 as an emotional reaction to the second Intifada. Or
in other words, as a testimony to the tragedies on the political and humanitarian level that his people
have suffered. Darwish considers that it is both a philosophical and political fact that it is necessary to
refuse the status quo and fixity; he even considers it to be the engine for his survival. He refuses to
accept the circumstances given after the second Intifada, and this political act is clear in the complete
book length poem entitled A State of Siege : Because reality is an ongoing text, lovely, white, without

subject: a culture may be thought of as providing, among other things, a pool of available metaphors

The new rules of modern day baseball involved the ability to steal bases, how the fields were built,
and how many players are allowed on one team in the MLB. Bat sizes along with pitchers mounds
have been changed as well for new requirements in the MLB. The new rules also allowed a batter to
take a free base when hit by a pitch, or when taken four balls out of the strike zone. Many changes
have been changed since starting the game until todays game, such as, instead of a team winning when
one side scored twenty one aces, a team today wins by scoring the most runs through nine innings of
baseball. In 1858, strikes were introduced and now batters could get called out on strikes. In 1863 the
bat size regulation was introduced, someone had to have a required size bat to play. Batting averages
were introduced in 1865 along with the batter being able to call a low or high pitch in 1867. The most
recent rule was in 2008 when the MLB added limited instant reply to be in affect for all games, this
started August 29, 2008. In todays baseball, there are rules in which a limited amount of players can
be on a team, and all the extra players go to either free agency or go to double AA or triple AAA. The
save rule was finally changed in 1975 along with the suspension of players using bats that are filled,
flattened, or doctored. There have been many Home Run leaders throughout the years of Baseball. The

Parabola Y X2 Change
The shape of the basis parabola y=x2 changes for different forms of the parabolic function causing it
to translate, reflect or dilate. Dilation (widening or narrowing) of the parabola occurs when the basis
parabola y=x2 is multiplied or divided (m) therefore changing the equation to either y=mx2 or
y=x^2/m. For instance, if the parabola is multiplied by two the parabola becomes narrower whereas if
the parabola is divided by two the parabola becomes wider. This is evident in the graph in question 1b
as when the basis parabola is multiplied by fourteen the parabola becomes narrower however when the
basis parabola is divided by fourteen it becomes wider. Reflection of the parabola occurs when the
basis parabola y=x2 is changed to y= x2. For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Vertical (upwards or downwards) translation of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2, y
value of each point is increased or decreased therefore changing the equation to either to y=x2+h or
y=x2 h. For instance, in order to translate the parabola upwards by 5 units it shifts the general point (a,
a2) to (a, a2+5) therefore making the equation, y= x2+5. The vertex of this parabola is now (0,5) but it
still has the same axis of symmetry. Likewise, when the basis parabola becomes y=x2 5 the parabola is
translated 5 units down with the vertex (0, 5). This can be seen through the graph in question 1a as the
parabolas are vertically translated upwards or downwards by using the addition or subtraction of
fourteen. Conversely, horizontal translation of the parabola occurs when the translation parabola
equation y=x2±h is changed to y=(x±h)2. Therefore, the horizontal translation for the parabola is
changed by the value of the variable h, that is subtracted from x before the squaring operation. For
example, in order to translate the parabola to the left by 4 units it shifts the general point (a, a2) to (a,
(a+2)2) therefore making the equation, y= (x+2)2. The vertex of this parabola is now (0,4). Likewise,
when the basis parabola becomes y=(x 2)2 the parabola is translated 2 units to the right with the vertex
(0, 4). This can be seen through the graph in

Oral Communication Reflection
Back on Tuesday, September 19, I (along with the rest of the class,) gave my first speech in Oral
Communication Class. It was our first speech assigned/presented in class, and its topic, Self
Introduction. Some people may find it challenging, but I see it as a very simple subject to talk about.
Who knows more about you than yourself? No one! So why do people find it so hard to talk about? I
had a funny feeling that the day the order of our speeches were assigned that I d be the first person to
give their speech. Sure enough, I was the first person to give their speech. I m genuinely glad that I
was first because I was able to get it out of the way and not have to stress on it. Giving a speech in
front of my peers is nowhere near as nerve racking or terrifying as I thought it would be, but upon
giving my speech, I would like to reflect on how I felt the day of my speech (in terms of confidence
levels,) some verbal and delivery skills which I used well/not as well, some improvements that could
of been put in place for my speech, and who in the class I believe gave the best speech among us all.
First off, how I felt on the day of our first speech. I m not going to say that I was 100% confident in
myself and not nervous at all, because that s simply not true, but all in all I felt pretty good and I wasn
t really that nervous. Since I m used to speaking in front of people, I wasn t nervous about talking in
front of my peers but forgetting what I m talking about in my speech since I m used to memorizing
and not just speaking out in front of people. The only thing I could think of which I could do to make
me less nervous than what I was on the day of my speech would be to go practice more in front of
people who aren t my friends. Otherwise, I believe I used my skill of performing in theatre and
transposed it into my speech so I wouldn t be nervous upon giving my speech. In speaking of skills,
the next topic I d like to address is some skills which I used well/not so well. Some verbal skills I
believe I used well (in the content) would be connecting to the audience with funny little examples of
a side topic I was talking about. An example of this would be when I said as red head, I could either be

The Effect Of Cologne On The Body
The Effects of Cologne Can the way a man smells actually affect his life? Can buying expensive
cologne give him more confidence or make him irresistible? Cologne advertisers would certainly seem
to think so. In truth, scents can affect an individual in different ways. Certain scents can have
particular effects on the body, and they can actually alter the way a person behaves or perceives
himself. Scents that work positively with a man s body chemistry can actually change the way he acts
or thinks. However, when cologne ads promise men that they will be handsome, successful, powerful,
and talented because of the scents they wear, the industry begins to sell them fantasy rather than
reality. Advertisements for cologne are very unique. Cologne ads usually portray a message that says
wearing this will make you attractive or you will be more powerful by wearing this cologne. Most of
these advertisements feature men, since men are their target audience. However, some other
advertisements feature women, since women sometimes buy cologne for men as a gift. Some
advertisements, like this one, feature celebrities. Having a good looking celebrity, such as James
Franco, draws in the attention of viewers. This advertisement does a great job of visual advertising.
The dark, simple background of city lights is intended to focus one s attention solely on the image and
the text, while portraying a scene of mystery or perhaps adventure. This advertisement is fairly simple,

According to the AMA dictionary of Business and Management (2013), Porter s Five Forces can be

of power within a particular industry and its profitability. The following are the five forces: Bargaining
Power of Buyers, Bargaining Power of Suppliers, Competitive Rivalry in the Industry, Threat of New

Automotive Industry Defined
Binder Rae (2017) defined the automotive industry as an industry that consists of all companies and
activities involved in the manufacturing of motor vehicles. It is key to note that this includes aspects
such as the building of components such as engines, and bodies of automobiles, but, according to
Binder Rae, excludes aspects such has tires, batteries, and fuel. Binder Rae states that the primary
products that the automotive industry manufactures are passenger automobiles and light trucks, and
commercial vehicles.
Automotive Industry Profile Outlook
Ferro (2015) identifies that the automotive industry is both capital and labor intensive. This is shown
through the management of costs and expenses associated with the manufacturing of vehicles (e.g.,
facilities, materials, parts, equipment, product development, and employment). Further, Ferro
discusses that the prices of key raw materials, such as steel, can fluctuate which requires the industry
to be strategically flexible.
In the United States the automotive industry is the largest single manufacturing enterprise in terms of
total value of products, value added by manufacture, and number of wage earners employed,
according to Binder Rae (2017). As well, Bind Rae state that one of every six American

Drinking Age Persuasive Speech
The world is changing every day and new situations are popping up that need to be fixed. Teenagers
are already at greater risks at being exposed to peer pressure, drinking, smoking, violence, risky
behaviors and etc.. We are the world today and we are trying to make a change but how will a changed
be inflicted if people want to lower the minimum legal drinking age(MLDA). I understand that young
people like to party, turn up, and get lit(littttt) but in reality it s not all about that so I m here to
persuade you that the minimum legal drinking age shouldn t be lowered.
All fifty states minimum drinking age is twenty one but there are exceptions based on state by state
bases and certain necessary essentials. There are a lot of proponents and opponents of lowering the
minimum legal drinking age from 21 because teenage drinking is occurring so heavily so there might
be rules to push this underage drinking or binge drinking into controlled environments or places and
private environments that are secured. If these new rules are established this can lead to drinking more
from young teens, unhealthy behaviors and life endangering behaviors by teens. The alcohol

those who are younger than 21 drink less and continue to drink less during their early 20 s. It was also

According to Wikipedia.com, software testing, depending on the testing method employed, can be
implemented at any time in the development process. Traditionally most of the test effort occurs after
the requirements have been defined and the coding process has been completed, but in the agile
approaches most of the test effort is on going. As such, the methodology of the test is governed by the
chosen software development methodology.
The process of testing, is normally preceded by strategic coding by programmers, who normally
initiate software testing as they write codes. This most naturally, is dependent on the testing method
employed, and may be implemented at any point during the development process.
Because of the urgency for this application, it is recommended that Riordan

What has not been discussed as attentively, though, are the rising mental health costs for the aging
inmate population. The mandatory sentencing policies instituted in the 1970s have caused a dramatic
increase in the nation s prison population, with 125,000 of 1.5 million inmates being aged 55 years or
older in 2010, according to a Human Rights Watch report. Annual health care costs for an inmate aged
55 59 are approximately $11,000, while the annual costs for an inmate aged 80 and higher are nearly
four times that amount. Compare these figures to the $5,500 annual health care cost for a younger
inmate and the issue becomes undeniable it is essential that our nation discovers a way to both
decrease health care costs for inmates and address the growing population of elderly inmates. ... Show

Nursing homes with trained staff members are better equipped to handle the increased care needs for
individuals with mental health issues. These partnerships would not only provide better quality of care
for these individuals, they would also decrease the costs of providing similar services in the prison
itself, where in New York the annual cost for a specialized unit for cognitively impaired inmates is
more than double the cost per inmate compared to inmates in general population. Partnerships with
nursing homes would allow prisons to transfer inmates suffering from dementia to a more suitable
environment with better trained staff while simultaneously lowering the health care expenses for the

Why Positive Intelligence Can Help An Hr Professional...
Introduction The power of positive thinking has been lauded for its ability to bring light and good
feelings to bad situations since the beginning of man. Everyone who was able to harness the power of
positive thought was able to bring new and innovative inventions to mankind because they didn t
allow failures and negative experiences shape the way they viewed the toils of their work. In other
words, people were able to see the glass as half full rather than half empty which brought about
positive outcomes because they were able to see through all the negative aspects of their work or life.
This brief discussion will talk about just that, the power of positive intelligence. I ll begin by defining
positive intelligence and talking ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Importance of Possessing a Positive Intelligence As we ve seen from the definition of positive
intelligence, it seems as though the importance of mastering the concepts are self evident. We all want
to perform at our best in whatever task we take on providing the greatest possible product or resource
for our employer. We ve all worked with someone who has constantly portrayed a negative attitude
and it never contributed to a highly effective workplace. John Maxwell is a motivational speaker and
leadership expert has made a living off of getting people to think more positively through their daily
tasks to produce high level results. In his Daily Reader book he provides an example of what positive
thought and positive expectations can provide a person. He says that if a person gives themselves just
30 days of expecting the best of everything they will often receive the positive outcomes they
perceive. He says a person will get out of their life everything they expect from it, god or bad
(Maxwell, 2007). The power of positive intelligence can be profound on a personal and professional
level and its importance should not be discredited.
Becoming More Productive Through Positive Intelligence An HR manager can have a tremendous
impact on the productivity of an organization. One of the ways they can influence an organization is
by properly managing the change process and

  • 2. Failure of an MIS Essay Failure of an MIS In the year1994, FoxMeyer was the fourth largest drug wholesaler in the United States with an annual sales of approximately $5.1 billion. The company filled orders from thousands of pharmaceutical companies with shipments of up to 500,000 items per day. However, in the same year, due to rapid growth and consolidation of the pharmaceutical industry, FoxMeyer s management was concerned about competition from the larger competitors. The threat imposed required drastic measures. The whole industry competed on low profit margins. Therefore, FoxMeyer decided to stay ahead of the competition by implementing a new information system. Previously, the Information Technology department consisted of the Unisys mainframe, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Conceptually, FoxMeyer s information system planned to conduct business with its customers on a daily basis. FoxMeyer focused its value chain on activities in their business where competitive strategies could be best applied. (Porter, 1985) However, the implementation was inconsistent with the changing business environment. The new system caused problems at every step of implementation. Problems ranged from inadequate time allocation for development, testing, debugging, lack of interaction between management, systems personnel, consultants and low user involvement. Initially, FoxMeyer s management were supportive and committed appropriate funding of $56 million to develop and install the newly named Delta Information System. However, to build its new 340,000 square foot warehouse, FoxMeyer spent an additional $18 million. The company hired Anderson Consulting, a leading international information systems consulting firm, both to advise them about the project and to supply skilled personnel to construct the system. Also, FoxMeyer purchased R/3, an inventory management software system from SAP AG, a giant German software company. Although SAP had been designed to run on Digital Equipment Corporation hardware, FoxMeyer purchased a Hewlett Packard Company client/server system at a cost of $4.8 million. The vendor for the warehouse system was Pinnacle, a system not tightly integrated with SAP R/3. (Caldwell, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. Futility And Wilfred Owen s The Happy Warrior Poets of WW1 use various poetic techniques such as metaphors, similes, imperatives, biblical references, alliteration, rhetorical questions, personifications, sibilance, irony, ellipsis, contrast and rhyming in their poetry to depict the horror and destruction caused by war, and send a powerful message to their readers. Wilfred Owen s Futility and Dulce et Decorum Est , Siegfried Sassoon s Suicide in the Trenches and Herbert Read s The Happy Warrior are all poems which reflect on this, as well as depict the psychological and physical damage the war has on the young soldiers and convey a profound pity towards them. The poem Futility , written by Wilfred Owen, incorporates many poetic techniques to depict how the war pours lives into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In the very beginning, Sassoon incorporates a sibilance, I knew a simple solider boy , used to draw attention to what the soldier was like before the war, which is discussed throughout the first stanza. The tense and tone of the second stanza change and discuss the happenings during the war and how the soldier is struggling to deal with it, living in the winter trenches, cowed and glum . In the second line of the stanza, Sassoon also uses an alliteration, to a create a more explicit picture. The third line shows how Sassoon sees the soldier putting a bullet through his brain , which is also described using an alliteration to create a longer lasting effect of horror. Sassoon ends the stanza by saying No one spoke of him again , where he highlights what a dishonourable act this soldier s portrayed to have committed. The third stanza develops an aggressive tone where Sassoon expresses his anger towards the smug faced crowds at home Who cheer when s soldier lads march by as he believes that it was there fault that this happened to the soldier. He incorporates a imperative and tells the smug faced crowds to Sneak home as they are cowards. Sassoon also includes an aabb rhyme throughout the poem which he has incorporated so the poem ... • 4. A Visit From The Goon Squad Analysis Every work of literature requires a theme for it to be worth reading. Jennifer Egan s A Visit from the Goon Squad mainly presents the theme of ruin and redemption throughout the novel. This theme is present alongside with other minor themes like the shift of American culture, and how the characters self centered ways are crush by time. All of the major characters will find themselves at some sort of low point in their lives throughout the novel. Jocelyn becomes addicted to drugs and spends a great amount of her adult life going in and out of rehab; Benny will lose his record label contract and will be seen as a failure by most of those still in the industry; and Sasha will show falling into ruin due to her stealing addiction, self isolation from family, and lack of self love. The idea of ruin and redemption is also present alongside the characters setting. Theses characters live in a post 9/11 New York City, where the towers are destroyed, the streets and rivers are polluted, and surveillance is amplified, making New York City reflect this theme in a mournful way. The same for the story Goodbye, My Love , Ted goes to Italy, and notes the ways Naples is degrading. This Forensic evidence is obtained at the scene of a crime and transported to a laboratory, where it is handled by specialists. I will also look at how the relationship between these two terms has become distorted and blurred over time. In order to reinforce what I am saying about popular and high culture I will be using a range of examples from the music industry to show how the line between high culture and popular culture has become ambiguous. I will also call upon the work of John Storey to give my work an academic foundation. Analysis Of Paris Is Burning COMPARISON OF PARIS IS BURNING AND HOW TO SURVIVE A PLAGUE Ava Morrow History 3220 The United States in the 20th Century November 13, 2017 Beginning in the mid 1980 s, a number of efforts were initiated to bring awareness and enlightenment to the actual tragedy of AIDS. Two films that evolved out of these awareness campaigns were the documentaries Paris Is Burning and How to Survive a Plague . Both films, although in significantly diverse ways, provide a window into the alternative lifestyles of LGBT people of the times and the problems and issues they faced. A comparison of these two documentaries demonstrates the initial fears of the public and affected people and the beginnings of acceptance or at least tolerance of these alternative lifestyles. The movie Paris Is Burning is a documentary film exploring race, gender, and sexuality within the African American and Latino gay and transgender communities of the ball culture of New York in the mid to late 1980 s. Ball culture is a term used to describe the underground sub culture of LGBT people who walk or compete for trophies in events known as balls. The film chronicles the ostentatiously arranged competitions in which participants, within a very specific theme, must walk while being judged on criteria such as the authenticity and beauty of their apparel and their dancing ability. Much of the film shows footage of actual balls interspersed with interviews of prominent members of this drag scene. The film shows people of different gender identities and their varied methods of expressing themselves while also exploring how they cope with racism, AIDS, poverty, and homophobia. How to Survive a Plague is a documentary movie which depicts the early years of the AIDS epidemic and the efforts of ACT UP and other groups. ACT UP, founded in March 1987, is an advocacy group which supports legislation and medical research and treatment of AIDS victims. From the perspective of a feminist, Williams actions urge for greater awareness and advocacy to stop the sexualized violence as well as the degradation of women across Canada and the world. It is too easy to dismiss Williams acts as those of a deranged man and to perceive no need further response. If anything, the Williams case must call us all to greater awareness and advocacy to end all sexualized violence and degradation of women. said Alice Schuda. There are various factors that may have occurred throughout Williams s life that could thoroughly account for his sexually deviant behaviour. Because the origin of blindness varies from case to case, there is no single remedy and limited solutions are available to the visually impaired. However, recent technological breakthroughs have allowed scientists and doctors to test out possible solutions to a particular niche in the blindness spectrum: degenerative retinal diseases. Degenerative retinal diseases such as Retinitis Pigmentosa (RP) attack the retina exclusively. Because of that exclusivity, the other structures in the eye are typically not compromised. Therefore, the use of a retinal implant or prosthetic device to restore functional vision is possible. One of the ways to do as such is incorporating the renewable natural resources of energy in the existing power system while satisfying all operational constraints. It is a highly constrained multi objective optimization issue including contradictory objectives with probabilistic and non probabilistic correspondence and non fairness constraints to oblige the uncertainties of renewable Energy Resources. In this paper a hybrid multi objective Backtracking search with sequential quadratic programming optimization algorithm is proposed. The stochastic way of photovoltaic and wind energy is displayed by Weibul probability distribution function with solar irradiance and wind speed being stochastic variables. This statement was said in the context that Hamlet is showing his tenders of affection to Ophelia, tenders meaning not legal tender. The first part of this charge tells Ophelia that she should be careful with who she accepts love from. This is a loving statement from father to daughter, and receives no reward when in the shadow of the last part of this statement, which has three meanings. • 26. Pros And Disadvantages Of Globalization And Globalization Long gone the days in which we find products that are locally made. Many of the items we own have been across seas. Our country has become much more of an importing company than an exporting one. We consume so many of the goods that countries overseas provide. As a country facing controversy on economic growth it is important to get back to the concept of manufacturing our own goods. Our world now is to globalize everything, especially if it increases our profits and lower our production costs. Introduction to Globalization and Manufacturing Globalization refers to act on trade across other nations. It basically is connecting with other markets to provide the goods. It is to make one s own economic growth and make it global. It takes one business from being locally known to being a worldwide item. Globalization has taken its shift to less developed countries. It has been given less developed countries the chance to be part of the global market. The less developed countries in return provide their services in production at a very low price. Every concept has a goal. In the case of globalization it is primarily meant to take businesses a higher advantage of cutting their operating costs and making more profit. Companies find alternative places that will provide the resources needed to provide the final product. Globalization seems like a sweet deal to many businesses that are trying to take their product worldwide. Many of the people that seem to be affected by this ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 27. Gandalf As An Epic Hero Gandalf The hero is one who kindles a great light in the world, who sets up blazing torches in the dark streets of life for men to see by. Felix Adler Although it is accurate, rarely has the epithet epic hero been used to describe Gandalf the Wizard. Epic heroes are easily recognizable throughout History textbooks and simple searches via Google, but many people just cannot put a finger on what exactly is an epic hero. The criteria is simple to say, yet difficult to accomplish; do a tremendous deed or disservice and be identified by a well known or well established piece of writing or section of History. In The Lord of the Rings, Gandalf embodies the characteristics of an epic hero, such as traveling vast distances, battling supernatural foes, and having humility. Hannibal, Julius Caesar, Napoleon Bonaparte, and Gandalf; in their time, these four figures traveled over vast distances. Hannibal through Italy, Caesar through Gaul, Napoleon through Europe, and Gandalf through Middle earth. However, Gandalf did not just travel the span of Middle earth, but the span of life and death. In The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Gandalf is pulled into a dark chasm by a Luciferic creature, a chasm that has a symbolic meaning. He lands and defeats the Balrog on a snowy mountaintop, but death creeps up on him, until it finally takes him over. Political/Philosophical act Mahmoud Darwish wrote A State of Siege in 2002 as an emotional reaction to the second Intifada. Or in other words, as a testimony to the tragedies on the political and humanitarian level that his people have suffered. Darwish considers that it is both a philosophical and political fact that it is necessary to refuse the status quo and fixity; he even considers it to be the engine for his survival. The new rules also allowed a batter to take a free base when hit by a pitch, or when taken four balls out of the strike zone. Many changes have been changed since starting the game until todays game, such as, instead of a team winning when one side scored twenty one aces, a team today wins by scoring the most runs through nine innings of baseball. In 1858, strikes were introduced and now batters could get called out on strikes. In 1863 the bat size regulation was introduced, someone had to have a required size bat to play. Batting averages were introduced in 1865 along with the batter being able to call a low or high pitch in 1867. • 31. Parabola Y X2 Change The shape of the basis parabola y=x2 changes for different forms of the parabolic function causing it to translate, reflect or dilate. Dilation (widening or narrowing) of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2 is multiplied or divided (m) therefore changing the equation to either y=mx2 or y=x^2/m. For instance, if the parabola is multiplied by two the parabola becomes narrower whereas if the parabola is divided by two the parabola becomes wider. This is evident in the graph in question 1b as when the basis parabola is multiplied by fourteen the parabola becomes narrower however when the basis parabola is divided by fourteen it becomes wider. Reflection of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2 is changed to y= x2. For example, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Vertical (upwards or downwards) translation of the parabola occurs when the basis parabola y=x2, y value of each point is increased or decreased therefore changing the equation to either to y=x2+h or y=x2 h. For instance, in order to translate the parabola upwards by 5 units it shifts the general point (a, a2) to (a, a2+5) therefore making the equation, y= x2+5. The vertex of this parabola is now (0,5) but it still has the same axis of symmetry. Likewise, when the basis parabola becomes y=x2 5 the parabola is translated 5 units down with the vertex (0, 5). This can be seen through the graph in question 1a as the parabolas are vertically translated upwards or downwards by using the addition or subtraction of fourteen. Conversely, horizontal translation of the parabola occurs when the translation parabola equation y=x2±h is changed to y=(x±h)2. Therefore, the horizontal translation for the parabola is changed by the value of the variable h, that is subtracted from x before the squaring operation. For example, in order to translate the parabola to the left by 4 units it shifts the general point (a, a2) to (a, (a+2)2) therefore making the equation, y= (x+2)2. The vertex of this parabola is now (0,4). Likewise, when the basis parabola becomes y=(x 2)2 the parabola is translated 2 units to the right with the vertex (0, 4). • 33. Oral Communication Reflection Back on Tuesday, September 19, I (along with the rest of the class,) gave my first speech in Oral Communication Class. It was our first speech assigned/presented in class, and its topic, Self Introduction. Some people may find it challenging, but I see it as a very simple subject to talk about. Who knows more about you than yourself? No one! So why do people find it so hard to talk about? I had a funny feeling that the day the order of our speeches were assigned that I d be the first person to give their speech. Sure enough, I was the first person to give their speech. I m genuinely glad that I was first because I was able to get it out of the way and not have to stress on it. Giving a speech in front of my peers is nowhere near as nerve racking or terrifying as I thought it would be, but upon giving my speech, I would like to reflect on how I felt the day of my speech (in terms of confidence levels,) some verbal and delivery skills which I used well/not as well, some improvements that could of been put in place for my speech, and who in the class I believe gave the best speech among us all. First off, how I felt on the day of our first speech. I m not going to say that I was 100% confident in myself and not nervous at all, because that s simply not true, but all in all I felt pretty good and I wasn t really that nervous. Since I m used to speaking in front of people, I wasn t nervous about talking in front of my peers but forgetting what I m talking about in my speech since I m used to memorizing and not just speaking out in front of people. The only thing I could think of which I could do to make me less nervous than what I was on the day of my speech would be to go practice more in front of people who aren t my friends. Otherwise, I believe I used my skill of performing in theatre and transposed it into my speech so I wouldn t be nervous upon giving my speech. In speaking of skills, the next topic I d like to address is some skills which I used well/not so well. Cologne advertisers would certainly seem to think so. In truth, scents can affect an individual in different ways. Certain scents can have particular effects on the body, and they can actually alter the way a person behaves or perceives himself. Scents that work positively with a man s body chemistry can actually change the way he acts or thinks. However, when cologne ads promise men that they will be handsome, successful, powerful, and talented because of the scents they wear, the industry begins to sell them fantasy rather than reality. Advertisements for cologne are very unique. Cologne ads usually portray a message that says wearing this will make you attractive or you will be more powerful by wearing this cologne. Most of these advertisements feature men, since men are their target audience. However, some other advertisements feature women, since women sometimes buy cologne for men as a gift. Some advertisements, like this one, feature celebrities. Having a good looking celebrity, such as James Franco, draws in the attention of viewers.
