Tover’s beginnings
Ambition to improve the quality of live for people with
dementia
PhD research at the TU Delft (Faculty of Industrial Design
Engineering) and the VU Amsterdam (department of Clinical
Neuropsychology).
• Starting point: 90% of nursing home residents with dementia
suffer from apathy.
• Goal: to design a playful product to reduce apathy.

Tover’s beginnings
• Findings:
• insights on how the physical & social environment
influence their level of physical activity
• which play experiences are suitable during the different
stages of Alzheimer's
• the design of the Tovertafel
• indication of positive effects on apathy (small scale
study)

Design strategy of Tover

How the Tovertafel works
• First commercially available evidence-based light game system for
dementia patients.
• Uses light play to project interactive images onto a surface
• Games designed to encourage instinctive participation, stimulating
physical & social activity
• For 2 target groups: people with dementia and people with a learning
disability.
• Can be installed remotely & provides unlimited access to all games,
updates & online environment ‘My Tover’
• Tovertafel is present in 14 countries and 5,500 care homes
(750 care homes in the UK)

How Tover helps those with dementia
For those with dementia:
• Increases social activity & enjoyment, physical activity
and positive emotions
• Reduces restless and tense behaviour and negative
emotions
• Breaks through apathy
For carers:
• Improves the relationship between care worker and
resident
• Increases the work pleasure
• Promotes interaction & helps to connect
