Tonsillitis Case
1. The issue with Tonsillitis and the removal of my tonsils have been a very frustrating and elongating
issue for me until I really stepped away and looked at it from a different viewpoint. Being that I am
always wanting to be in control and also hate not being able to have the ability to do things without
interruption, this problem raised many conflicts with these things. I found myself being mad, upset,
and even depressed about it because I could not control what was happening. I had to rely on doctors
and medication, and I did not know how to truly process that. Also the recovery process and having to
go in for another procedure to remove the skin tissue from the original surgery also motivated a lot of
negative responses. But, during my ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Looking at the situation, the obvious answer is to flunk the student, or not feed the beggar who has
nothing to give. But, if you look at the situation from another angle, you can look at it as an
opportunity for the instructor to truly do something and give the student something of true value. Also
this can be looked upon as an opportunity for the instructor display a true Zen moment. To do
something for someone who can do nothing for you, and has nothing to offer. The instructor could
truly enlighten the student and give them the opportunity to truly see the error in their ways and
provide them the chance to truly grow. Failing the student, or not feeding the beggar does not satisfy
or answer any real need or satisfaction to the universe or person who is in the position to change the
situation. Failing the student does not truly teach the student about Zen because Zen has no timeline or
schedule. Failing them because they have not grasped the true teaching of Zen in a designated timeline
is not Zen like because everybody experience with Zen is different. So the opportunity of the
instructor to pass the student but, speak to them about their future journey with Zen and how to
become better in Zen would be good for both parties. Passing the student is a Zen opportunity for both
the instructor and the student and failing the student would be a missed opportunity for both the

Analysis of The Handmaid s Tale
The Handmaid s Tale is a distopian novel of tightly wound truths and links to our society today. It is
so tightly wound, like a thorn bush, that gaining any meaning from it at all proves to be a very arduous
task indeed for those who are not predisposed to do so. Nevertheless, some meaning did present itself
during the text, as follows.
The truth that is privileged in The Handmaid s Tale is that societies/regimes based on totalitarianism
and extremism are not satisfactory for anyone involved. Even though they may in theory be an
improvement, in practice they fall dismally short of the mark. This truth is apparent in every aspect of
The Handmaid s tale. The commander, for instance one of those key men responsible for the creation

Narrative viewpoint both assists and hinders responders in making meaning from the text. The

idea of what Gilead was like from day to day, but the responders are also hindered as they only gain
one perspective, Offred s. Even Offred s point of view can not be taken entirely truthful, as it is
already known that she is composing the text in

Western Roman Empire Research Paper
Many factors led to the transition from a republic to an empire, no one event or person is to blame. For
one the Roman Republic constitution was never really laid out for conquest with wealthy oversea
territories so the addition of more provinces caused the delicate balance within the political
constitution the begin to collapse. The Romans had a fatal flaw: they were great in warfare changes
but when it came to political changes, they were pretty hard headed. Their refusal to adapt to political
change soon became a major factor in the fall of the Republic and rise of an Empire. Since the
Romans were great at warfare, of course that was also a factor in the fall but it wasn t just war with

The Empire was split in half because the Empire had grown far too large to govern all of Rome from
one seat alone. Diocletian, an Emperor, divided Rome where the Eastern side would be governed out
of Byzantium and the Western side governed out of Rome. The two halves of the Empire were equally
doing great but then when Emperor Theodosius came into power in 379 CE, the fall began. Barbarian
attacks and religious disagreement were two major causes for the fall. Christianity was rising, pagan
rites were being knocked, and Roman beliefs were just crumbling. The waring within the Empire left
it weakened and ultimately vulnerable. Which then left their defences down long enough for barbarian
attacks. Christianity is a monotheistic religion, only one god, which clashed with the traditional
Roman religion that was polytheistic, multiple gods. Persecution was brought down on Christians
horribly that is, until Constantine, the first Christian Emperor, ended the tyranny over the Christians in
313 CE. Soon Christianity became an official religion and the Western Empire was Roman Catholic.
By Roman beliefs, the Emperor was considered a god of sorts but the Christians only followed one
god and since Christianity was spreading more and more the Emperor s authority was

The Boxer Uprising have both wounded and opened China s relations with the rest of the world by not

because the Boxer had mutilated and slaughtered thousands of Chinese Christian converts, Western

Although by the end of the nineteenth century China s population has reached millions, most Chinese
peasants had never encountered foreigners or Western missionaries. Nevertheless, the Boxers held a
strong belief that foreigners and Christian missionaries were responsible for the breakdown in the
fabric of simple Chinese peasant society and they dishonored their traditional spiritual and
community. Because the missionaries are protected by the flag and Treaty of Tientsin, they have the
right to rent and buy land to build churches and allowing them to move freely in China. (Hsu, 388).
The missionaries also infuriated the Boxers because they just weren t spreading Christianity but reject
Confucian. The converts failure to kowtow to the idols, to worship Confucius and ancestor, and to
participate in local festivals honoring the spirits greatly irritated the gentry. (Hsu, 388). The Boxers
believed that the central government had failed to tackle the issue of village politics and moral issues.
For example, there were two natural calamities occurring at that time along with famine after the
Taiping era such as a flood and a drought. Furthermore, the Boxers attributed China s natural disasters
such as flood, drought and famine to the corruption of Christianity. Drought followed the great flood

My High School Job Application
Throughout the last four years of my high school career, I spent most of my time trying and
experiencing new opportunities. I love to keep myself busy, and I did so by being actively involved in
numerous organizations. Freshman year and still currently, I have been active in Track and Field.
Freshman year I received a medal and made varsity. By the end of that year I earned a varsity letter in
Track and Field. The following year (sophomore), I had the opportunity to work at my local hospital
(Rhode Island Hospital). My job title was a patient transporter, which required me to transport patients
to and from their rooms and test sites throughout the hospital. Also, transferring specimen was a
regular task throughout the day. I genuinely appreciate the opportunity to work and witness all of the
different health fields in the hospital. This job opportunity is so important to my life because it helped
me determine that I like working and helping people, but I do not like seeing them sick and gory.
During my Junior year of high school, I became more active within my community. I joined the
NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People). I spent at least four hours a
week, giving my time to the NAACP, making and giving sandwiches to people in need, cleaning
vacant lots, building a bed, and much more. Also, I had the opportunity to be ... Show more content on

The Legal System Of The Law
The law is worldwide; it affects almost every aspect of our everyday lives and also has an impact on
every individual. There are many types of laws such as laws that deal with crimes and laws that
govern activities within the community; there are also specific laws in certain portions of the legal
system. Laws are made in order to give us rules of conduct that protect everyone s individual rights
(Canada Department of Justice). How law is dealt with is seen to vary throughout different countries
for the reason that each country contains different laws that are based to fit their culture and customs.
However, when law is dealt with, regardless of the area it is enforced in; if the crime of the accused is
serious enough it will go through a trial system which is also seen to vary depending on the country. A
trial system is the process of examining a case in the court of law and deciding if an individual is
innocent or guilty of what they are being accused for (Macmillan dictionary). Trial systems are an
important part of the legal system for the reason that everyone is entitled to the right of a fair trial
procedure which allows the individual that is being accused to be determined innocent or guilty
through the rule of law so that if the individual is in fact innocent then there will be no consequences
and all will be forgotten and if guilty they will be dealt with properly. Trials are held accordingly
depending on the trial system that is being used in that particular court

Introduction
Markets differ in a variety of ways including the degree of concentration and competitiveness, a fact
which is reflected in the concept of market structure . Economists models link the structural
characteristics of a market to the behaviour of firms in that market and subsequently to their
performance. A key question therefore is how far a firm s strategic decisions are shaped by the
structure of the market in which it operates.

and make Scotland a powerhouse in global aviation. A stock market flotation was mooted, valuing the
airline at up to £100m, while its summer flight schedule was spectacularly upgraded, offering 40%

Not since the days of Sir Freddie Laker s Skytrain in the late 1970s had the established transatlantic

took five years and an aggressive price dropping exercise for the competition to drive Laker out. But
while British Airways, Pan Am, TWA and Lufthansa were said to have met to plot Laker s downfall,

As with other transatlantic carries such as MaxJet, Eos and Silverjet, Zoom s problems lay primarily

Is King Arthur Real Or Real
For years, historians and scholars have been questioning the truth behind the great King known as
King Arthur. His power and legend have influenced many modern aspects as well as having a direct
effect on various components of British history. Yet, there is not definitive proof as to whether or not
this man was real. King Arthur s story has been told for years upon years and is considered to be on
the of the most heroic legends of all time, but the question still remains: Is King Arthur real? King
Arthur s legend is based off of a true King that was able to defend Britain from a Saxon invasion.
History says that this King was extremely heroic and brave. It is this great King that the legend comes
from. The first time King Arthur s name is mentioned is in the writings of a Welsh historian, Nennius.
He often references to a powerful King named Arthur, who helped the Britain in twelve specific and
real battles. The only problem with this is that it is impossible for one man to have fought in all said
battles. These battles took place all over the country of Britain and over the course of around a
hundred years. It is physically impossible for one man to have fought in all twelve battles. Ignoring
the facts, various Welsh painters decided to paint the famed King Arthur that Nennius spoke so highly
of. Their creation of King Arthur led to the spread of the mighty King s fame. Nennius s tales went on
to spark fire for years to come. History of the King s of Britain was the

Waking Up Teens Analysis
In these two texts, both authors informed their readers on how and why technology impacted society
as well as introduced claims that these impacts were a main factors in human evolution. Schools
should provide blue light for students because, according to the passages, it improves learning by
making them more alert, allowing them to rest well enough to be prepared for school and giving them
and help alleviate sleeping disorders among the students.
If students were to be more awake in the morning, they would have no problem retaining the
information that they learn throughout the day. In Selection 2, Waking Up Teens, when at the
beginning of the passage, it says, Teenagers morning drowsiness is often caused by out of tune body
clocks... Scientists now say that timing exposure to blue light avoiding it during the first two hours of
being awake, then getting a good dose of it can help restore the sleep cycle... (Wake Up Teens,

Essentially, teens will be able to wake up fully rested if they were to have blue light at the right time

higher attendance rate. This, along with sleeping disorders could be managed if schools would just

Hunger Games
The Hunger Games This paper is to be a discussion of The Hunger Games. It is mostly going to
include a discussion of the main themes of the movie and how the director presents these themes in
forms of characters, the environment, etc. The Hunger Games is about a girl called Katniss Everdeen,
a girl from district 12 who voluntarily takes her younger sister´s place as tribute in the Hunger Games,
a televised fight to the death in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are
chosen at random to compete until death. There is more than one main theme in this movie; some
examples of these are the inequality between rich and poor, suffering as entertainment and the
importance of appearances. Some questions that need to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The principle is best exemplified in Cato s slow death at the end of the movie. Once the dogs have
defeated Cato, they don t kill him immediately, and Katniss realizes that the Gamemakers want Cato
to remain alive because it creates an exceedingly gruesome spectacle. It is the finale of the Games, and
so they want to deliver prolonged suffering the audience at home won t be able to turn away from. The
suffering, however, doesn t have to be purely physical. It can be psychological as well. Katniss s and
Peeta s romance, for instance, is the subject of so much fascination because it is presumed to be
doomed. The Gamemakers changed the rules of the game just so they could get closer to each other,
and in the end they changed it back so they had to kill each other in order to win. They always try to
create as much suffering as possible for the tributes. Throughout the movie, Katniss and her team use
her external appearance, including what she says and how she behaves, to control how other people
perceive her. At the reaping ceremony, for instance, she won t allow herself to cry in front of the
cameras because she doesn t want to give the impression of being weak (and therefore an easy target).
Furthermore, at the opening ceremony of the Games, the novel emphasizes how important
appearances are by focusing a great deal on Katniss s preparations. The main feature of this

Young Goodman Brown And A Cask Of Amontillado Analysis
Young Goodman Brown and A Cask of Amontillado both incorporate a gothic theme to the simple yet
intricate plotline they hold. Within the two short stories, irony scatters, adding to the overall grim
theme. Although they use the same 3 types of irony, the authors use them differently and similarly at
the same time. In Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne and A Cask of Amontillado by
Edgar Allen Poe, there are many examples of situational irony that are used comparably in both texts.
Dramatic irony is the type of irony that informs the reader of a certain fact that one or more characters
in the story may not know. This is quite evident in Young Goodman Brown and A Cask of
Amontillado, because of the lack of knowledge that the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This is dramatic irony because the reader knows something that a character, in this case, Fortunato,
doesn t know. Young Goodman Brown and A Cask of Amontillado both use dramatic irony but in very
different ways. Young Goodman Brown uses dramatic irony to add some comedic relief to the
otherwise serious story, while A Cask of Amontillado uses this type of irony to add to the tension in
the text. Young Goodman Brown by Nathaniel Hawthorne and A Cask of Amontillado by Edgar Allen
Poe, although they use it for different purposes. Situational irony is a type of irony that compares the
expectations for an event and the real outcome. Situational irony is most times humorous, and this
witty irony is present in both Young Goodman Brown and A Cask of Amontillado. Hawthorne s work,
Young Goodman Brown, refers to the concept of heaven and hell, specifically the devil. When
Goodman leaves his wife, Faith, to go on a journey, he worries for her. He justifies himself by saying
Well, she s a blessed angel on earth; and after this one night I ll cling to her skirts and follow her to
heaven, (Hawthorne 3). This quote alone has 3 examples of situational irony. First, his wife s name,
Faith, symbolizes how he leaves his town for the devil, and that he is leaving his faith behind.
Secondly, Goodman never truly finds out

All Relationships Between A Mother And A Daughter
Not all relationships between a mother and a daughter are the same, but involves human interaction.
Every mother differs in their teaching and upbringing of their children, especially their daughters. A
mother s love and compassion for her child, wants the best for her child. Sometimes, her love is
rigorous because she does not want her daughter to go through her experiences in life. Written by
Jamaica Kincaid, in Girl the mother is teaching her child to take care and defend herself. Written by
Amy Tan, in Two Kinds the mother is trying to help her daughter discover her talent. A mother
instructs her daughter to obey rules and modes of conduct in order for her to be successful. Mothers
are strict when it comes to instructing their daughters of how to build a proper identity for themselves.
On Sundays try to walk like a lady and not like a slut you are so bent on becoming; don t sing benna in
Sunday school; you mustn t speak to wharf rat boys, not even to give directions; don t eat fruits on the
streets flies will follow you (Kincaid 320). Basically, mothers want their daughter to care about their
appearance and to look clean in society. The mother does not want her daughter s name to be
spreading of how nasty she dresses in public. The girl s mother wants her to not only look like a lady,
but act as one. She wants her child to have respect for herself and respected for others, by not singing
in school. If she does what her mother tells her to do; therefore

The results might be surprising to the Managers. Especially, when they are out of touch with what
really is going on around the store.
Step 2 is forming a powerful guiding coalition. Leadership will have to be on board and on the same
page in regards to the change. Kotter and Cohen reveal the core problems people face when leading
change. Their main findings are that the central issue concerns not structure or systems but behavior
and how to alter it (Farris, 2008). The success of the changes will depend on the ability of the
managers to show their commitment to change and motivate the employees to do the same. Without
any process to track the implementation, the change can also fail.
Step 3 is to create a vision. The vision will have to be something that can be realistically achieved
within a couple of months. Making small changes to training will better to subtly introduce the
existing employees a better way to process the go back to prevent stray items. Mentioning the vision
of the company other than just at orientation can improve the focus of the employees. Having a clear
vision of where they stand in the company can increase morale due to their stability and contribution
in the company.
Step 4 is to communicate the Vision. When everyone in the company understands and believes in what
the company stands for, it creates a sense of unity and will reduce resistance to change.
Communication is the key. Training will be implemented, but if there are any additional

Each School will have different demographics with who is attending the school, what their annual
tuition and fees are and where they are located. All of these will play a factor in the amount of devices
that will be purchased at each school. Private schools typically have higher tuition and fees than public
schools, so private school students will be more accepting of the device s charges in their fees than
public school students who watch their fees much closer. Consumer Tastes will heavily rely on the
danger of the schools and the crime climate in the town in which that school is located. For example,
in cities with much lower crime and overall much safer, students will have a much more difficult time
paying money for a device that they don t need. But with that being said though schools who already
have excellent safety statistics, will want to keep that superior level of safety and an extra layer of
safety would be ideal for safer schools too. Schools that are located in a town or city with higher crime
rates, will be willing to pay the fees in order to protect themselves and feel more comfortable. The
important idea behind Tiny Knight that any student, large city or small town, safe campus or
dangerous, can benefit just knowing that if worst case scenario

But France, on the other hand, wanted back their territory which Germany took, attempted to

troops, there were horses without harnesses, canons without ammunition, and machine guns with men
who had no idea how to use them ( Franco German War ). The Germans knew about their power and
took the advantage of many countries at the time. Many wars were affected by the snowball effect ,

Essay On Estrogen
Jenna Gunselman
12/1/2011
Biochemistry Extra Credit Paper
Estrogen and Its Effects Estrogens are steroids that are important in the reproductive cycles of humans
and some animals, and they are the main female sex hormones. They easily diffuse across cell
membranes, and once they are inside, they bind to estrogen receptors to control many genes and their
expressions. In human women, there are three types of estrogen: estradiol, which is the dominant form
of estrogen in women who are not pregnant, estrone, which is produced during menopause, and
estriol, which is found in pregnant women.
Estradiol is the most potent of the three types of estrogen found in women, almost ten times stronger
than estrone and almost eighty times stronger ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Both groups were then exposed for another 24 hours to etoposide, a drug used in chemotherapy that
promotes apoptosis. The results of this test showed that caspase 3 activity decreased in cells treated
with estrogen, but increased in cells not treated with estrogen. This supports the hypothesis that
estradiol does have an effect on apoptosis in bone cells, and that without it, cell death will increase and
bone density will diminish.
In addition to its effects on bone health, estrogen also has a huge effect on the cardiovascular system.
Studies have shown that it increases the levels of HDL, or good cholesterol, decreases the levels of
LDL, or bad cholesterol, and relaxes and dilates blood vessels so that blood flow will increase. There
is also evidence that estrogens contribute to the maintenance of the health of the endothelium, or the
lining of the blood vessels, thus further protecting the cardiovascular system from plaque and heart
disease. With menopause, estradiol levels drop, and so these effects on the heart and blood vessels are
lowered, giving postmenopausal women a higher risk of heart disease than premenopausal women.
A study done by Kim and Levin in 2006 at the University of California states that 17 beta estradiol
typically has a protective property on the cardiovascular system, and that it decreases the amount of
cell death in cardiomyocytes, or heart muscle cells. To test this theory, female rats

Joining Cults
Former Members Perception of Cult Movement, is a study researched and done by Dr. Carmen

published online under the ICSA ( International Cultic Studies Association), a non profitable anti cult

people to join cults, and as well as delve in the topic of previous mental health seekers and the impact
on them when joining these cults.
Unfortunately, the hypothesis wasn t clearly mentioned in the research paper. However, it could be
easily predicted that the hypothesis is surrounding the topic that most people who join cults believe
that the cults are morally good and healthy for them. The prediction is based on the fact that the

The World Of The Buddha
Siddhartha Gautama, the Buddha, who lived in northern India from 560 to 480 B.C, founded
Buddhism Buddhism, one of the major religions of the world. The time of the Buddha was one of
social and religious change, marked by the further advance of Aryan civilization into the Ganges
Plain, the development of trade and cities, the breakdown of old tribal structures, and the rise of a
whole spectrum of new religious movements that responded to the demands of the times (Cones 10).
These movements were derived from the Brahmanic tradition of Hinduism but were also reactions
against it. Of the new sects, Buddhism was the most successful and eventually spread throughout India
and most of Asia. Today it is common to divide Buddhism into two main branches. The Theravada, or
Way of the Elders, is the more conservative of the two; it is dominant in Sri Lanka, Burma, and
Thailand (Berry 23). The Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, is more diverse and liberal; it is found mainly
in Taiwan, Korea, and Japan, and among Tibetan peoples, where it is distinguished by its emphasis on
the Buddhist Tantras (Berry 24). In recent times both branches, as well as Tibetan Buddhism, have
gained followers in the West. It is virtually impossible to tell what the Buddhist population of the
world is today; statistics are difficult to obtain because persons might have Buddhist beliefs and
engage in Buddhist rites while maintaining folk or other religions such as Shinto, Confucian, Taoist,

In one of Oscar Wilde s most enduring play, The Importance of Being Earnest, it displays very
noticeable pun, referring to the word earnest honest and loyal. Filled with parodies of the Victorian

Allusions to Vampires in Mang Minno In Mang Minno , a short story within Where The Elephants
Dance by Tess U Holthe , a young boy named Roman encounters a man named Mang Minno, who is
believed by the island people to be Jonah from the Bible. When Roman meets him, he wishes to learn
how to catch fish, so that he can show them to his father. He thinks that all he is getting himself
involved in is a method with which to gain large amounts of fish, very quickly. However, he soon

These clues are the most direct in the story, they take traits directly from vampire folk lore and
superimpose them on Mang Minno.
Mang Minno s attitude and aura are both also similar to that of a vampires; rather vile and dark. His
aura is well illustrated with the following examples: His voice is described as having an unsettling
effect on Roman: The bitterness of his voice touched me like fingers of the dead (81). This simile,
referring to the dead, shows that Roman may subconsciously be aware of what Mang Minno is. After
all, vampires are regarded as not being truly alive, but being life forces of the deceased. Mang Minno s
eyes are described as glowing (90), when Roman sees him from the boat he is riding with Aurora
(Mang Minno s daughter). Mang Minno s attitude is also illustrated by way of the disdainful
comments he makes about church:
In church, does it ever seem to you a kind of game? Hypocritical. Be humble, they say, yet people
come in their best clothes. Give penance, yet as they close their eyes and kneel, they compare who is
better dressed, the beauty of someone else s wife, the sway of her hips, they think of anything but
prayers.
(96)
This attitude is vile and dark, which Roman sees. It also fits in with the accounts of Mang Minno
being a devil worshiper, he would obviously be against God and churches. All of the above
demonstrates Mang Minno s

Costco Is An American Wholesale Corporation
Costco is an American wholesale corporation that operates based on the membership warehouse club,
while Target is a retailer corporation that specializes in discount merchandise. Even though both
Costco and Target have different target operation, they are the top two largest companies in the retailer
industry in the United States. In order to analyze and compare the financial health of these two
company, it is important to recognize these three key terms: liquidity, solvency, and profitability.
Liquidity is a financial term used to determine the ability of a company to pay off its short term debts,
which will be due within the next year or in an operating cycle. In another word, liquidity is a very
important indicator to evaluate a company s financial health. Liquidity ratio shows a comparison
between the most liquid assets and short term obligations of a company. A higher liquidity expresses
that the company has not only a better ability to pay off its short term debts but also a greater amount
of cash for an unexpected needs. In another word, when a company has a low liquidity, the company
may face a risk to pay its short term debt and struggle to fund its long term operation. The current ratio
is one of the most common and useful terms used to measure the liquidity of a company. It suggests
the capability of a company to pay back its liabilities with its assets. The current ratio is computed by
dividing current assets by current liabilities. According to a financial

The Usefulness of Functionalism for an Understanding of the Family
Functionalists focus on the roles of the family as an institution and its interaction with other
institutions, such as the ratio of functions the family has to perform compared to those that other
institutions such as schools and the NHS perform. Functionalism sees the use of the family in society
and how it can take pressure from the government by becoming an almost dependent institution that
will help support its own members.
George Murdock analysed 250 societies and studied the purpose of the family, he came up with a final
definition; that the family performs several main functions. These functions help the individuals
within ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The Functionalist theory does not consider that the modern situation and success of institutions other
than the family has decreased the importance of the family and the functions it performs. For example,
the role of education is now limited to only children under the age of five, as schools provide the
majority of education for the younger members of the family from that age to adulthood. Reproductive
functions of the family have also been limited because it is no longer necessary for a family to have
both parents to create a child. This could be because of promiscuity or artificial insemination. Finally,
economic support within the family has also been reduced because the government provides benefits
for Old Age Pensioners, the unemployed and pregnant mothers, meaning that a family does not need
to support itself financially to survive as there are other options.
Talcott Parsons considered how industrialisation and advances in technology and social morals have
changed the functions of the family and he claimed the families functions were now limited to just two
functions. Firstly is primary socialisation , he believed that parents taught their children from an early
age what was socially accepted and normal behaviour in public. Primary socialisation also includes
teaching the foundations of language. The second function is to

Essay on Robert Nozick s Experience Machine
Good experiences are something that we spend our life constantly striving to obtain. Once we gain
these good experiences, we look for the next opportunity in order to gain that same great feeling that
we had in our last experience. What if someone told you that there was a way to have these good
experiences all the time? You could quite literally plug yourself into a machine that would give you
the great experiences that you have been searching for your whole life. The best part is that, once you
have decided to plug yourself into this machine, you would feel and think that these false experiences
you are having are real. Robert Nozick proposes this very scenario in his book Anarchy State, and

Unger mentions the tendency for us to buy life insurance as a claim that good experiences are not the
only thing that matter to us. We do not get good experiences for paying our life insurance. In fact, we
will never experience anything that happens to this money. We do this so that our dependents will
benefit from this money. With all this said, we are still very rational in buying this life insurance.
(Unger 1990, 166) Therefore, we should value our capacity to make free decisions in the real world
over just having good experiences. The life insurance example, that Unger mentions, is a perfect
example as to why there are things that matter to us besides pleasure. Nozick sums this up by saying,
Perhaps what we desire is to live as ourselves, in contact with reality. (Nozick² 2010, 1) One can
interpret Nozick s statement by his insinuation that gaining pure pleasurable experiences are not as
valuable as knowing that we are living in contact with reality. We should cherish and desire our lives
in our realistic world; false pleasure experiences have no real value. In our lives, we want to BE
certain people to plug in to an experience machine is to commit a form of suicide. (Nozick² 2010, 1)
Plugging into an experience in order for you to merely experience false happenings would be lying to

Treatment Of Drug Use And Drug Abuse Essay
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse (2012), the intention of drug addiction treatment is
to help addicted individuals stop compulsive drug use and drug seeking behavior (p. 8). Substance use
is a timeless practice of cultures around the world and can be found in religious ceremonies,
celebratory engagements, and family gatherings. Substance abuse and addiction has also been lurking
in the shadows of history and has morphed into what some are calling an epidemic today. Treatment
for addiction is a necessary service all over the world, but the methods and modalities of its practice
have changed throughout history often being molded by federal policy. In the following pages I will
discuss some of these changes to treatment in the 20th century in the United States.
According to Henninger and Sung (2014), in the late 1940s the Minnesota Model was introduced as a
new method to treat alcoholism. The Minnesota Model included mutual respect for participants
instead of shame and degradation. One of the first facilities to utilize the Minnesota Model was
Willmar State Hospital in Minnesota. The Willmar State Hospital staff eventually developed the model
which was based on insisting that treatment include a multidisciplinary and holistic approach.
The staff at Willmar also believed that professionalization of addiction treatment was necessary to
appropriately treat patients. This progression of change to the Minnesota Model would mean that

Why We Should Fight the War on Terrorism

A Rationale for the War on Terrorism
Preface
On September 11, 2001, our fellow citizens, our way of life, our very freedom came under attack in a
series of deliberate and deadly terrorist acts. On this day, our nation united, determined to obliterate
the evil force of terrorism from the planet Earth. Now, just eight years later, these same people wish to
pardon the acts of evil, disregarding the 2,995 deaths that they united to avenge just a few years
before. So the question lies before us; do we hunt down and punish those responsible for these
cowardly acts, or do we ignorantly allow terrorist to revenge the freedoms our founding fathers

Neither bin Laden nor al Zawahiri met the traditional qualifications to issue a fatwa of any kind, but
their hatred of the United States led them to do so anyway.
Before the launch of the War on Terror, al Qaeda had already killed 3,036 Americans, injured 11,870+
Americans, and cost the United States over $32.1 billion. The attacks foreshadowing the War on
Terror were clearly costly to the United States, and are motifs for fighting the al Qaeda and other

The Curious Enlightenment Of Professor Caritat Analysis
The Curious Enlightenment of Professor Caritat, written by Steven Lukes. Towards the finale of the

characters are environmentalists. Lukes did not simply add these characters to fill up empty space in
his story plot. However, Lukes did this intentionally to have the environmentalists to be the symbolic
embodiment of enlightenment ideas. In addition, Lukes also wanted to install a stark contrast between
the enlightenment, and the other philosophies discussed in the novel.

she considers important in her choice: taste, location, and price. The value she places on each attribute,

location, and two times as important as price. If she opens a restaurant in the Los Angeles

Arguments Against Libertarianism
Libertarianism is the social political philosophy that emphasizes autonomy, freedom of choice, and
individual rights above all else. Its name comes from Liberty as in a liberty to act as a morally
autonomous agent without public or private interference. Although Libertarianism holds a generally
skeptical view of political government, it does not entirely argue for anarchism. Libertarianism does
argue for a limited government, not necessarily limited in its actual physical size or scope, but rather
limited in its ability, and power, to interfere into the aforementioned autonomy of a moral citizen.
There are many schools of thoughts within Libertarianism. The purpose of this paper is not to give a
defense of a specific Libertarian philosophy, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As was argued before, it is wrong for a state to impose moral values (even if those values are right).
Even more so, to do so creates inequality. Take the contemporary policy debate of whether an income
bracket should be taxed lower or higher. Conservatives may argue for a lower tax on certain, and
liberals may argue for higher tax on the rich. Both are wrong and unfair, and will only create
inequality. It is wrong, and immoral, to target a single group based on materialistic attributes such as
income. One cannot be selected for more harsher or lenient treatment based on how much money one
makes. It should be equal for everyone as it is the only fair position of not having a law benefit one
group because of X or Y trait or characteristic. I disagree with Rawl s progressive taxation arguments.
If a person, born equally into a society with equal opportunity, happens to make more money than the
rest, he or she should not be taxed any differently. For doing so would allow the state to impose a
restriction on an autonomous citizen that had not fault in virtue of making more or less money. Equal
representation under the law, and tax code, should be what is fair. Inequalities are bound to arise, and

celebrities ethos to gain the mainstream attention on a serious matter as climate change is. We can see

Harrison Ford begins by establish himself more than just a celebrity, but as someone who have been
interested in climate change and seeks for more answers. Showtime, uses Ford s ethos to imply not

The Ballad Of Mulan And Mui Slays The Serpent
In the two stories The Ballad of Mulan and Chi Li Slays the Serpent two young girls living in Ancient
China defy all odds and go against the gender barriers. Mulan and Chi Li are two different women
living in different parts of China, however, they both have similar feelings about the way they should
handle difficult tasks. On the contrary, Mulan is a secretive young girl, while Chi Li is honest. Both
women reveal their true colors when they step out of their traditional role in society and take on the
role of a man.
Chi Li and Mulan both value bravery and their families well being. Chi Li and Mulan both take risks
and forget about fear, as they take on challenges that could end with their death. When Chi Li says,
Poor girls! ... The monster conquered you because you were too timid to put up a fight! How pitiful! it
shows her value because she s making fun of the girls who weren t brave enough to fight the serpent.
Chi Li frowns upon this as she values bravery and these girls were too proper to retaliate. Although
nobody has ever been able to slay the serpent, Chi Li defies all odds and does so because of her
courage. As for Mulan, even the small action of when she buys a spirited horse, ... she buys a saddle ...
she buys a bridle .... she buys a long whip. shows bravery because she had to sneak around her town
without anyone seeing her. If anybody saw her, they would realize what she was doing and her parents
would have found on immediately. Her bravery overcame the feelings of fear she may have felt, and
she stayed strong and fought for twelve years. Both women were brave as an attempt to care for their
parents and their families. Even though fighting a serpent and fighting in a battle may have been risky,
the two women fought their hardest for the benefit of their families. The two women were courageous
because they faced danger and overcame it, even though this might have been difficult. Both women
value bravery and family matters because of their fearless mind sets.
Chi Li values honesty while Mulan values secrecy. When Chi Li says to her parents, Father and
Mother, I want you to know that I have decided to place myself into the hands of the county
authorities and to volunteer to

  • 2. Tonsillitis Case 1. The issue with Tonsillitis and the removal of my tonsils have been a very frustrating and elongating issue for me until I really stepped away and looked at it from a different viewpoint. Being that I am always wanting to be in control and also hate not being able to have the ability to do things without interruption, this problem raised many conflicts with these things. I found myself being mad, upset, and even depressed about it because I could not control what was happening. I had to rely on doctors and medication, and I did not know how to truly process that. Also the recovery process and having to go in for another procedure to remove the skin tissue from the original surgery also motivated a lot of negative responses. But, during my ... But, if you look at the situation from another angle, you can look at it as an opportunity for the instructor to truly do something and give the student something of true value. Also this can be looked upon as an opportunity for the instructor display a true Zen moment. To do something for someone who can do nothing for you, and has nothing to offer. The instructor could truly enlighten the student and give them the opportunity to truly see the error in their ways and provide them the chance to truly grow. Failing the student, or not feeding the beggar does not satisfy or answer any real need or satisfaction to the universe or person who is in the position to change the situation. • 3. Analysis of The Handmaid s Tale The Handmaid s Tale is a distopian novel of tightly wound truths and links to our society today. It is so tightly wound, like a thorn bush, that gaining any meaning from it at all proves to be a very arduous task indeed for those who are not predisposed to do so. Nevertheless, some meaning did present itself during the text, as follows. The truth that is privileged in The Handmaid s Tale is that societies/regimes based on totalitarianism and extremism are not satisfactory for anyone involved. Even though they may in theory be an improvement, in practice they fall dismally short of the mark. This truth is apparent in every aspect of The Handmaid s tale. For one the Roman Republic constitution was never really laid out for conquest with wealthy oversea territories so the addition of more provinces caused the delicate balance within the political constitution the begin to collapse. The Romans had a fatal flaw: they were great in warfare changes but when it came to political changes, they were pretty hard headed. Their refusal to adapt to political change soon became a major factor in the fall of the Republic and rise of an Empire. Diocletian, an Emperor, divided Rome where the Eastern side would be governed out of Byzantium and the Western side governed out of Rome. The two halves of the Empire were equally doing great but then when Emperor Theodosius came into power in 379 CE, the fall began. Barbarian attacks and religious disagreement were two major causes for the fall. Christianity was rising, pagan rites were being knocked, and Roman beliefs were just crumbling. The waring within the Empire left it weakened and ultimately vulnerable. Which then left their defences down long enough for barbarian attacks. Christianity is a monotheistic religion, only one god, which clashed with the traditional Roman religion that was polytheistic, multiple gods. Persecution was brought down on Christians horribly that is, until Constantine, the first Christian Emperor, ended the tyranny over the Christians in 313 CE. Soon Christianity became an official religion and the Western Empire was Roman Catholic. Nevertheless, the Boxers held a strong belief that foreigners and Christian missionaries were responsible for the breakdown in the fabric of simple Chinese peasant society and they dishonored their traditional spiritual and community. Because the missionaries are protected by the flag and Treaty of Tientsin, they have the right to rent and buy land to build churches and allowing them to move freely in China. (Hsu, 388). The missionaries also infuriated the Boxers because they just weren t spreading Christianity but reject Confucian. The converts failure to kowtow to the idols, to worship Confucius and ancestor, and to participate in local festivals honoring the spirits greatly irritated the gentry. (Hsu, 388). The Boxers believed that the central government had failed to tackle the issue of village politics and moral issues. For example, there were two natural calamities occurring at that time along with famine after the Taiping era such as a flood and a drought. Furthermore, the Boxers attributed China s natural disasters such as flood, drought and famine to the corruption of Christianity. • 7. The Legal System Of The Law The law is worldwide; it affects almost every aspect of our everyday lives and also has an impact on every individual. There are many types of laws such as laws that deal with crimes and laws that govern activities within the community; there are also specific laws in certain portions of the legal system. Laws are made in order to give us rules of conduct that protect everyone s individual rights (Canada Department of Justice). How law is dealt with is seen to vary throughout different countries for the reason that each country contains different laws that are based to fit their culture and customs. However, when law is dealt with, regardless of the area it is enforced in; if the crime of the accused is serious enough it will go through a trial system which is also seen to vary depending on the country. A trial system is the process of examining a case in the court of law and deciding if an individual is innocent or guilty of what they are being accused for (Macmillan dictionary). Trial systems are an important part of the legal system for the reason that everyone is entitled to the right of a fair trial procedure which allows the individual that is being accused to be determined innocent or guilty through the rule of law so that if the individual is in fact innocent then there will be no consequences and all will be forgotten and if guilty they will be dealt with properly. His power and legend have influenced many modern aspects as well as having a direct effect on various components of British history. Yet, there is not definitive proof as to whether or not this man was real. King Arthur s story has been told for years upon years and is considered to be on the of the most heroic legends of all time, but the question still remains: Is King Arthur real? King Arthur s legend is based off of a true King that was able to defend Britain from a Saxon invasion. History says that this King was extremely heroic and brave. It is this great King that the legend comes from. The first time King Arthur s name is mentioned is in the writings of a Welsh historian, Nennius. He often references to a powerful King named Arthur, who helped the Britain in twelve specific and real battles. The only problem with this is that it is impossible for one man to have fought in all said battles. These battles took place all over the country of Britain and over the course of around a hundred years. It is physically impossible for one man to have fought in all twelve battles. Ignoring the facts, various Welsh painters decided to paint the famed King Arthur that Nennius spoke so highly of. Their creation of King Arthur led to the spread of the mighty King s fame. It can be psychological as well. Katniss s and Peeta s romance, for instance, is the subject of so much fascination because it is presumed to be doomed. The Gamemakers changed the rules of the game just so they could get closer to each other, and in the end they changed it back so they had to kill each other in order to win. They always try to create as much suffering as possible for the tributes. They easily diffuse across cell membranes, and once they are inside, they bind to estrogen receptors to control many genes and their expressions. In human women, there are three types of estrogen: estradiol, which is the dominant form of estrogen in women who are not pregnant, estrone, which is produced during menopause, and estriol, which is found in pregnant women. Both groups were then exposed for another 24 hours to etoposide, a drug used in chemotherapy that promotes apoptosis. The results of this test showed that caspase 3 activity decreased in cells treated with estrogen, but increased in cells not treated with estrogen. This supports the hypothesis that estradiol does have an effect on apoptosis in bone cells, and that without it, cell death will increase and bone density will diminish. In addition to its effects on bone health, estrogen also has a huge effect on the cardiovascular system. Studies have shown that it increases the levels of HDL, or good cholesterol, decreases the levels of LDL, or bad cholesterol, and relaxes and dilates blood vessels so that blood flow will increase. There is also evidence that estrogens contribute to the maintenance of the health of the endothelium, or the lining of the blood vessels, thus further protecting the cardiovascular system from plaque and heart disease. With menopause, estradiol levels drop, and so these effects on the heart and blood vessels are lowered, giving postmenopausal women a higher risk of heart disease than premenopausal women. A study done by Kim and Levin in 2006 at the University of California states that 17 beta estradiol typically has a protective property on the cardiovascular system, and that it decreases the amount of cell death in cardiomyocytes, or heart muscle cells. The Usefulness of Functionalism for an Understanding of the Family Functionalists focus on the roles of the family as an institution and its interaction with other institutions, such as the ratio of functions the family has to perform compared to those that other institutions such as schools and the NHS perform. Functionalism sees the use of the family in society and how it can take pressure from the government by becoming an almost dependent institution that will help support its own members. The Functionalist theory does not consider that the modern situation and success of institutions other than the family has decreased the importance of the family and the functions it performs. For example, the role of education is now limited to only children under the age of five, as schools provide the majority of education for the younger members of the family from that age to adulthood. Reproductive functions of the family have also been limited because it is no longer necessary for a family to have both parents to create a child. This could be because of promiscuity or artificial insemination. Finally, economic support within the family has also been reduced because the government provides benefits for Old Age Pensioners, the unemployed and pregnant mothers, meaning that a family does not need to support itself financially to survive as there are other options. Talcott Parsons considered how industrialisation and advances in technology and social morals have changed the functions of the family and he claimed the families functions were now limited to just two functions.
