Crafting an essay on the subject of "College Application Essay Examples" is, undeniably, a
challenging task. The difficulty lies not only in the intricacies of the writing process but also in
the profound self-reflection it demands. Unlike conventional essays, this particular genre
necessitates a delicate balance between showcasing one's personality, achievements, and
aspirations while adhering to the guidelines set by college admissions.
The challenge begins with the need for authenticity. Applicants must delve into their own
experiences, triumphs, and setbacks, extracting meaningful anecdotes that convey a genuine
sense of self. It requires a deep exploration of personal identity, aspirations, and the unique
attributes that set an individual apart. Selecting the right experiences and framing them in a

one's life story in a coherent and engaging manner.
Moreover, the pressure to stand out among a sea of applicants adds an extra layer of complexity.

showcasing strengths without appearing boastful, and addressing weaknesses without
overshadowing achievements are all part of this delicate dance.

introduction that hooks the reader to crafting a conclusion that leaves a lasting impression, every
section demands careful consideration. Additionally, adhering to word limits while conveying a
comprehensive narrative requires strategic writing skills.

The Roles of Jennifer Lawrence and Mile Cyrus as Role...
Celebrities have a great effect on the people we become. Some people spend so
much time consumed by the entertainment world that they begin to idolize certain
celebrities in hopes of becoming like them. Two major starlets in the eye of
countless teenage girls around the world would be Jennifer Lawrence, known for her
starring role as Katniss Everdeen in the film The Hunger Games, and Miley Cyrus, a
hit singer with number one songs, We Can t Stop and Wrecking Ball . These two
stars both have large and supportive fan bases, but which celebrity is the better role
model for teenage girls is the question at hand. Jennifer Lawrence is a better role
model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs, modesty, and
humbleness.

For instance, Lawrence opts for classic, modest styles when attending red carpet
events. Lawrence s clothing choices almost always leave the rest of her body up to
the imagination. In contrast, Cyrus does whatever she pleases without keeping the
society watching in mind. For example, she recently performed at the Video Music
Awards in immodest clothing while dancing provocatively. Her music videos have
often included footage of her with just her bare body. The idyllic style of Jennifer
Lawrence outshines the distasteful style of Miley Cyrus, making Jennifer
Lawrence the better role model. Finally, Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model
for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her humbleness. Celebrities typically
have a difficult time with relating to teenage, but Jennifer Lawrence makes it seem
easy. Lawrence shows she is humble by simply being herself and not caring about
what Hollywood has to say about her. For example, Jennifer Lawrence had this to
say about her career: Not to sound rude, but [acting] is stupid. Everybody s like,
How can you remain with a level head? And I m like, Why would I ever get cocky?
I m not saving anybody s life. There are doctors who save lives and firemen who run
into burning buildings. I m making movies. It s stupid. (61 Hilariously) Despite her
star status, she still remains humble. Unlike Lawrence, Miley Cyrus lives the
The Case Of Samarco 2015 Mine Disaster
Corporate social responsibility is a controversial matter that regarding businesses
ethics especially those that only obeys the law and does not care for the social
harm they have caused. There are numerous occasions where the companies harms
the society and communities more than the benefits they provide. The case of
Samarco 2015 Mine Disaster is one of the occasion that occurred due to negligence
as they chose not to follow a single safety regulation of the dam which caused a
calamity that damaged the ecosystem and affect the people living in the state of
Minas Gerais.
The case of Samarco 2015 Mine Disaster is a catastrophe that involves 3 companies
which are BHP, Vale and Samarco. The collapsed of the mining Dam in the state of
Minas Gerais have damaged the ecosystem as well as the people living in the state,
roughly 60 cubic meters of water or more and other materials that are not harmful
such as iron oxide, sand and mud. This has caused more than 500 people homeless
and roughly 13 dead and 11 missing which consists of 8 Samarco Workers
(TheGuardian, 2015). Furthermore, the water was contaminated as it contains toxic
materials which could be due to the collapsed dam materials
(Workersbushtelegraph, n.d). Hence, as the water leaked to other rivers and the
Atlantic Ocean, there are less clean water. Due to this, the Indigenous people from
Krenak Tribe are protesting by blocking a railway line owned by Vale. Samarco has
sent emergency aid, which is also supported by Vale
Just-in-Time History
The technique was first used by the Ford Motor Company as described explicitly
by Henry Ford s My Life and Work (1923): We have found in buying materials that
it is not worthwhile to buy for other than immediate needs. We buy only enough to
fit into the plan of production, taking into consideration the state of transportation
at the time. If transportation were perfect and an even flow of materials could be
assured, it would not be necessary to carry any stock whatsoever. The carloads of
raw materials would arrive on schedule and in the planned order and amounts, and
go from the railway cars into production. That would save a great deal of money, for
it would give a very rapid turnover and thus decrease the amount of money tied up in

The chief engineer at Toyota in the 1950s, Taiichi Ohno (大野 耐一),
examined accounting assumptions and realized that another method was possible.
The factory could implement JIT which would require it to be made more flexible
and reduce the overhead costs of retooling and thereby reduce the economic lot size
to fit the available warehouse space. JIT is now regarded by Ohno as one of the two
pillars of the Toyota Production System.
Therefore over a period of several years, Toyota engineers redesigned car models
for commonality of tooling for such production processes as paint spraying and
welding. Toyota was one of the first to apply flexible robotic systems for these
tasks. Some of the changes were as simple as standardizing the whole sizes used to
hang parts on hooks. The number and types of fasteners were reduced in order to
standardize assembly steps and tools. In some cases, identical sub assemblies could
be used in several models.
Toyota engineers then determined that the remaining critical bottleneck in the
retooling process was the time required to change the stamping dies used for body
parts. These were adjusted by hand, using crowbars and wrenches. It sometimes
took as long as several days to install a large, multi ton die set and adjust it for
acceptable quality. Further, these were usually installed one at a time by a team
Non-State Actors And Terrorism
Non state actors and terrorism in international relations are complicated subjects
seeing it in different perspectives. Non state actors see themselves as freedom
fighters, whereas the victims see them as terrorists. There isn t a solid definition on
terrorism however, there are three different qualities that defines a terrorist. Violence
is a quality that causes destruction of properties and murder within states. Targeting
civilians is another quality that terrorist have because they use them to create
examples to threaten state actors. Finally the most important quality out of all is
political purposes because without it, it would be a group of sick people who
slaughter other people out of pleasure. Non states actors, and terrorismexisted... Show

Using violence, targeting civilian, and having a political goal is three main qualities
that defines a terrorist because without it any of these qualities it would be either a
protest or group of psychopaths killing civilians. In the movie Olympus Has Fallen
shows the violence of killing innocent people, causing destruction of properties and
taking president as hostage for political reasons. Kang Yeonsak the antagonist of the
movie wanted to turn United States of American into an irradiated wasteland and
watch them suffer as revenge for his family. There are similar historical examples of
terrorism that happened such as the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001 nearly
killed 2,500 innocent people in the World Trade Center and 1979 1980 Iran hostage
crisis using hostage as blackmail toward the government for exchanges of
Nothing Gold Can Stay
With the impending end of every good thing comes a chance for a new beginning
and a chance for a perfect moment. In a world where perfect moments seem scarce,
one is constantly reminded how temporary life truly is. Around every corner,
something always seems to be going wrong war, poverty, famine and yet some
people still manage to find the best in every situation. Robert Frosts Nothing Gold
Can Stay and the film Gladiator externally showcase completely different concepts;
yet relate in a way that allows one to realize how short life can be. A piece about
nature and another about the life of a Roman soldier; One simply cannot fathom
how two pieces as diverse as these can correlate. However, both pieces examine the
idea that life s greatest... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Regardless of its short length and appearance as a nature poem, Nothing Gold Can
Stay manages to touch the soul of each reader and allow them to fully understand
the mortality of life. The poem narrates the short lived experience of Spring s first
moments and the transient nature of life as described by Frost (Kearney Web).
Lines 1 4 describe gold as nature s first color its most beautiful and the hardest
color to hold. In line 4, Frost analyzes how short lived this moment of pure
happiness is. This line is where the beautiful scene of flourishing nature takes a
turn. Notice that it does so exactly halfway through the poem (Birmingham Web).
The momentary nature of line 4 signifies life s greatest moments slowly beginning
to end. The first half of the poem explains the beginning of nature and its most
beautiful moments, yet a shift occurs in line 5 Then leaf subsides to leaf, showing
how the moment of gold is gone and nature is simply nature once again a different,
more realistic kind of beauty. The reference to Eden in line 6 utilizes a mortality in
the cycle of human life birth, life and then eventually death. Life s golden moments
are temporary, just like the existence of a loved one or even one s self. There are
cycles of greatness and loss throughout life, as well as the poem. The poem
concludes with a rhymed couplet that shows how dawn loses it s luster and soon
turns to day, showing that like the title, nothing gold can truly stay. Frost uses this
poem as a felix culpa metaphor displaying the fact that although temporary, the
greatest moments would have no merit if they were not temporary. There is no good
without bad and, conversely, there is no bad without good. Those golden moments
in life and in the poem would never be appreciated fully if they were eternal, because
there would be no ordinary
Correlation Between Alcohol And Alcohol
Results The amount of hours a person works a week is negatively correlated to an
individual s dependency to alcohol. The less hours a person works per week the
more they will be dependent on alcohol. On average, the individuals in the sample
worked a low amount of hours a week (M = 11.31, SD = 14.9) and had a
moderately low dependency on alcohol (M = 31.11, SD = 14.26). In addition, the
confidence intervals looking at the amount of hours worked per week indicated that
the participants continued to work low hours (95% CI = [8.96, 13.83]). Along with,
both the upper and lower bounds of the alcohol decency score showing reaming
consistent with a modestly low dependency on alcohol (95% CI = [29.02, 33.58]).
When a Spearman s correlation analysis was used a negative correlation was found
indicating that a the less amount of hours a person worked a week the higher their
dependency on alcohol is. This correlation supported the hypotheses. A Spearman s
correlation was used because thee out of the four test for a normally distributed
population were violated and the sample size was over 100. However, the correlation
was not significant rs = .114, n = 152, p = .08 (one tailed).
The amount of hours worked in a week had an extremely small effect on a person s
dependency to alcohol r2 = .01. This incredibly small effect size is consistent with the
results of the significance test. With the correlation having no significance then it is
accurate to say that a person s work hours had
The Panda Bear Or Giant Panda
The panda bear or giant panda is located in the south central area of China. It is
recognized for its appearance. It belongs to the Carnivore group even though it
eats 99% bamboo. Pandas found in the wild will eat other grasses, wild tubers, or
meat in the form of birds, rodents, or carrion. Pandas in captivity receive honey,
eggs, fish, yams, shrub leaves, oranges, bananas, or other specially prepared foods.
Pandas live in mountain ranges because deforestation has driven them from
lowland areas. The panda is an endangered species. According to a 2007 report,
there are 239 pandas living in captivity in China, 27 pandas living outside the
country, and 1,590 pandas living in the wild. The panda bear is a great symbol in
China. This animal is noticed because it is on the endangered species list.
The red panda, though it shares the name of panda, is not a bear. It is more closely
related to a raccoon or skunk and is an endangered species. This panda is called the
red panda, lesser panda, or red cat bear. This animal is not closely related to the giant
panda or panda bear. This is an animal that is adorable and cuddly looking but it also
is so much larger than it appears.
Cultural Symbolism:
The panda bear is not only a fluffy creature it is also symbolic to China. The panda
can symbolize friendship and peace. The colors on the panda help resemble the Yin
Yang by showing how the two colors can mix and with the pandas nature it backs
this up. The panda is really peaceful and
Thesis For John F Kennedy s Assassination
John F. Kennedy s Assassination
Introduction John F. Kennedy was assassinated on November 22, 1963 in Dallas,
Texas. Lee Harvey Oswald is said to be Kennedy s assassin although it s rumored
that William Greer, who was driving the limousine the president was in, is who
killed the president. No one knows who exactly why Kennedy was assassinated.
Speech
President Kennedy was scheduled to deliver a speech in Dallas at a luncheon. His
wife, Jacqueline Kennedy, went with him although she rarely traveled with him.
Governor Connally and his wife were already sitting in the limousine and they were
just waiting for the Kennedy s to get in. The Kennedy s sat behind the governor and

As they were passing the Texas School Book Depository, all of a sudden gun shots
were being fired. JFK was shot in the neck and in the head. His skull blew off and
he leaned towards his wife after being shot in the head. Governor Connally was also
shot, although he was shot in the chest, he still managed to survive. Lee Harvey
Oswald was found responsible for his death.
Single Bullet Theory Some people believe in the single bullet theory Which is a
theory that says that the same bullet that wounded the governor also killed the
president. Although this could be possible, the president was also shot in the neck so
I couldn t have been just one bullet. The evidence they have backs up this theory but
it doesn t explain the bullet the president got in his neck.
Who Killed The President? Lee Harvey Oswald is the person held responsible for
assassinating the president. After Oswald was arrested, he was being transferred
between prison facilities, he got shot. Jack Ruby shot Oswald and it was live on
television. Oswald ended up dying 2 hours later at the same hospital that president
Kennedy was taken to. Oswald was a former Navy Seal. Oswald worked in the
Texas School Depository and supposedly that s where the president was shot
Essay Racial and Ethnic Identity
The African, Mexican, and Native persons have all interacted with the Dominant
American culture in some magnitude; consequently altering each different group s
racial and ethnic Identity. Throughout the semester, I have discovered that in much
literature writers had an ideal perspective on their own identity as well as the identity
that the dominant culture influenced them to have. While doing some research I
wanted to see what would be a transitional time frame for a person to be un
conditioned of many negative symbolic meanings in regard to minorities and
immigrants. My research has shown that there was a hierarchical scheme where an
individual can monitor his/her identity progression from one level to the next. This...

This mindset is shown in Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye. Pecola visited and knew
three women above her apartment who embraced their lifestyle. Speaking about
them Pecola says, Sugar coated whores, they called them, and did not yearn to be
in their shoes. Their only respect was for what they would have described as good
Christian colored women (Morrison 56). The second stage in the process of
developing racial and ethnic identity is encounter. This is when a person questions
the negative stereotypes that have become a part of their ethnic identity. This is
evident in How it Feels to be Colored Me by Zora Neale Hurston. She mentions her
first encounter when she realized she was different; It seemed that I had suffered a
sea change. I was not Zora of Orange County anymore. I was now a colored girl. I
found it out in certain ways. In my heart as well as in the mirror, I became a fast
brown warranted not to rub or run (Hurston). The third stage is Immersion
Emersion. This is when a person begins to rid themselves of their ethnic self hatred
and discover their traditional culture and customs (Cushner, McClelland and
Safford). This is evident in The School Days of an Indian Girl by Zitkala Sa. Here
as a returning student who has been assimilated to American ways, changes from a
school girl back into her traditional culture: I could speak English almost as well as
my brother, but I was not properly

Stargirls ability to take in the world as if every detail matters. She cries at the sight

she sees an ant on the sidewalk working hard for his colony. Then all of sudden

Christopher Columbus, Andrew Jackson, And President Van
Buren
This war began when the White man crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of
independence. They left Europe and slowly began fighting for a better life which
eventually led to their break away from the harsh brutalities of the British
government. When, in all reality, their search for independence led to the
abolishment of the freedom of the Native Americans. Instead of placing light onto
this subject, it is swept under the rug in schools across America today. I believe that
the way the American government chose to gain territory was selfish and ignorant
and led to the loss of many cultures and precious lives. Some of the ways this
happened was by the removal of rights, battles, untruthful treaties, and confiscation of
land. In many ways American history books and movies portray Christopher
Columbus, Andrew Jackson, and President Van Buren to be American heroes, but
these so called heroes are actually murderers, thieves, and liars. Jackson and Van
Buren believed that the Indians needed to become civilized and convert to
Christianity, yet the actions these two presidents practiced were opposite of what the
religion boasts. Obviously, they were the ones who needed to become civilized and
remember where they came from and that what they were taking away from the
Indians is exactly what they had fought for. Whenever Jackson was elected president,
he implemented laws that did away with the tribe as a legal unit and made them
subject to militia duty and state taxes,

ACC 410, Jackie Lewis, Ph.D.
Abstract
The Sarbanes Oxley Act, officially named the Public Company Accounting Reform
and Investor Protection Act of 2002 , is recognized to be the most noteworthy U.S.
federal disclosure and corporate governance legislation since the Securities Act
of1933 (the Securities Act) and the Securities Exchange Act of 1934 (the Exchange
Act). Furthermore, the provisions of the Act are momentous enough that it is
considered by many to be the most significant change to the federal securities laws in
the U.S. since the New Deal.

New levels of auditor independence and personal accountability for CEOs and CFOs
are provided by the Act. Additional accountability for corporate Boards, as well as
increased criminal and civil penalties for securities violations, increased disclosure
regarding executive compensation, insider trading and financial statements are also

The provisions of the act apply, not only, to U.S. companies that are required to file
annual reports with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), but also to
foreign companies that are listed in the U.S. or obligated to report to the SEC
periodically. Title I of the Sarbanes Oxley Act stipulates that a new Public Company

firewall s history has been well documented, but it s tough to pinpoint just which

of mythic proportion such as Alexander Nevsky earned their fame by defending the

people a strong sense of Slavic nationalism that persists to this day.2 Throughout
Russia s many fluctuations, however, some factors never changed. For the vast
majority of its existence, Russia has been viewed as a global power. It was not until
the fall of the Soviet Union that Russia lost its global eminence. Another constant has
been the need for access to warm water ports on the Baltic and Black Seas. Russia
has fought many campaigns to push its borders to these waters.1 These campaigns

Rudyard Kipling Metaphors
Rudyard Kipling, an English poet born in India, was known for his classic poems
that reflect the harsh treatment he received in America. From such a harsh past,
Kipling was able to describe several topics through the use of multiple stylistic
elements. The author creates a theme of the cruelty of society in his poems If , The
Thousandth Man, and The White Man s Burden through the use of metaphors, little
imagery, and repetition. To begin, Kipling uses a metaphor heavy writing style to
effectively get his point across. In the poem If , Kipling uses metaphors to create
more meaning behind the quote, If you can bear to hear the truth you ve spoken
/ twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools ( If Lines 13 14). This metaphor stresses

An example of where Kipling could ve elaborated on his ideas with imagery is
when he implied that Yours is the Earth and all that s in it ( If Line 31). Here,
Kipling presents himself with an opportunity to further elaborate on the subject.
While he could have described what the reader can obtain or gain from the world,
Kipling keeps it open to our imagination to decide what s in it. Another example of
where Kipling could ve elaborated his ideas with imagery is when he exaggerated
that Nine hundred and ninety nine of em go / by your looks, or your acts, or your
glory ( The Thousandth Man Lines 11 12). The lack of adjectives used by Kipling
in this text prevents him from being able to describe each of these aspects. This
suggests that the nine hundred and ninety nine people are blind by what you are
actually doing, and only view you by your authority. One last scenario of where
Kipling could ve elaborated his ideas with imagery is when he orders his sons to Go
bind ... to exile / to serve [the] captives need ( The White Man s Burden Lines 3 4).
Based on Kipling s idea on slavery, he could have emphasized using more imagery.
Using imagery, the author would have better revealed his idea of slaves being
shackled and put to work against their
arbitrage in the government bond market Essay
MGT 409 Case 1: Arbitrage in the Government Market
1.
In 1991, major discrepancies in the prices of multiple long maturity US Treasury
bonds seemed to appear in the market. An employee of the firm Mercer and
Associates, Samantha Thompson, thought of a way to exploit this opportunity in
order to take advantage of a positive pricing difference by substituting superior bonds
for existing holdings. Thompson created two synthetic bonds that imitated the cash
flows of the 8Вј May 00 05 bond; one for if the bond had been called at the year
2000, and one for if it hadn t been called and was held to its maturity at year 2005.
The first synthetic bond combined noncallable treasury bonds that matured in 2005
with zero coupon treasuries ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through similar calculations of the first synthetic bond, she found that she needed
0.0704 units of the 2000 STRIP, and the price of this synthetic bond was $100.43.
What Thompson found was surprising because both of these synthetic prices were
less than the ask price of the 00 05 treasury bond. In normal markets this shouldn t be
the case because the synthetic bond would be worth more to investors since it does
not have a redemption right to the government. In other words, the callable bond
should have a lower price than the synthetic noncallable bond.
2.
There are two ways that Thompson could exploit this pricing anomaly that she
found. If she already held the 00 05 treasury bond, then she could immediately
capitalize on the price discrepancy by selling the 00 05 treasury bond for the bid
price of $101.125 and buying one of these synthetic bonds. Whether to buy the
2000 synthetic bond or 2005 synthetic bond is up for debate and opinion but it
might be suggested to go with the 2005 one since the price of $98.78 is even
smaller than the price of $100.43 and there would be larger price impact. By selling

Pros And Cons Of A Movie Watching The Movie Rated R
Have you ever watched a movie that was rated R ? I believe that ratings on movies
and shows should not exist because a movie could be rated R but the content in the
movie is not bad at all, all kids will act differently to what they watch but if there
has to be ratings I think I have a better rating system for all kids and parents to help.
When you watched the movie you either ignored the rating or your parents let you
watchit on your own at home. If they let you watch it, because they already
watched it themselves, then they are on the right track. I m here to tell you why I
think parents should be the ones to tell what their kid watches by actually
watching the movie first so that ratings will not exist at all! When you watch an R
rated movie what s usually in the movie? It s either sexual content, nudity, violence
and/or language. When parents see an R rating they think that it has sexual
content, nudity, violence and language so then they don t let their kid watch it.
Sometimes it s just rated like this because it swears a couple times. I also doubt
that a grade 7 has never heard the F word before from their parents or a school
friend. It really should not be rated R for that. Another reason for parents to watch
the movie first instead of just looking at the rating is because the movie could be
rated 13+ but then have other bad things happen in the movie that they are not
supposed to watch. If the parents had not just read the rating and
Adolescence Is The Time Of Development Essay
Adolescence is the time of development that starts at pubescence and ends at
adulthood; the regular age extent is from 12 to 18 years, and this phase of
development has some anticipated physical, cognitive, and social turning points
(University of Rochester Medical Center Rochester, 2016). Pubescence includes
particular physiological changes in an individual such as tallness, weight, body
organization, sex attributes, and circulatory and respiratory frameworks. While
their bodies are changing, so are their minds. They begin to develop the power of
reasoning and morality. Kids who find themselves in this stage begin to do more
complex thinking; their minds progress from concrete operations such as
combining, separating, and ordering to reasoning and comparing ideas and point
of views. It is also at this stage that the social development of kids begin. Kids
around the age of twelve begin to form their identity. They begin to look for
relationships where they can reside and find their sense of self. As Erik Erikson
describes, they begin to experience the psychosocial stages of development; kids
begin to develop trust or mistrust, competence or inferiority, intimacy or isolation.
In many cases, the development of adolescents is found to be the most important
stage in life. Adolescence is a stage in life which comes across every phase of life,
starting with biology and ending in society (Peterson, 1988). It is a period in life
where children begin to form their identity and
The Influence Of Past American Women Writers
The Influence of Past American Women Writers Amy Tan, Julia Ward Howe, and
Judith Sargent Murray are some of the noble women whom have helped shape the
lives of their fellow gender with the talents of their writing. Much of their writing
became increasingly influential years after it was written. Their literature allows
today s modern readers to reflect on the humanity and the treatment of women,
understand history s past, and use it as an example to continue spreading the
vision of the equality of women today. Tan was known for her willingness to stand
up for herself against her mother, in pursuits to find her own dreams versus those
of what her mother had laid out for her (Showalter, Ch. Amy Tan ). Howe was a
poet, and founder of the nation s Battle Hymn of the Republic , she was known for
her activism of women s rights, abolition, and world peace (Showalter, Ch. Julia
Ward Howe ). Lastly, Murray was known as the first womanof American letters,
speaking for women s rights after the American Revolutionary War (Showalter, Ch.
Judith Sargent Murray ). Tan, Howe, and Murray have proved to be influential not
only in America s historic past, but inspiration leading to today and the future as
well. These women are excellent examples to learn from in taking ownership of their
women s rights and the equalities we shall have, in our still unequal world. Amy Tan
was born in Oakland, California. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants ( Amy

The Impact Of Shifts On Academic Patterns, Technological...
The importance of shifts in academic patterns; technological progress, and student
lifestyle changes; schools are compelled to consider new platforms for students to
achieve their scholastic goals. As cyber learning evolves, learning and engaging
outside of the classroom is one of many changes we see in educationtoday. While
technology continues to expand, it becomes evident that the development and
widespread usage of technologies allow educators to reconfigure the realm of
possibilities for learning in a networked world (Borgman et al., 2008). Community

in the community college field in general and the adult and continuing education field

additional steps community colleges can take to effectively serve students of a
growing diverse group:
Review and revise policies, admission practices, and requirements.
Upgrade curricula to meet changing demographic needs.
Continuously offer training and retraining programs.

The Long Term Effects Of Colonization
Electronical engineer Steven Magee once said, corrupt governments are run by
corrupt politicians that run corrupt law enforcement agencies. The repetition of the
word corrupt emphasizes how the governments, politicians, and law enforcement
agencies are all connected in a corrupt country. This quote by Steven Magee relates to
various countries around the world that have trouble with corruption; specifically;
Kenya. Corruption has plagued Kenya since colonization when the British Empire
took over in 1895, and has not lessened over time. The long term effects of
colonization by the British is what caused Kenya to be as corrupt as it is today.
Before such dishonesties ensued, there were several historical milestones that... Show

Throughout history, Kenya has had to tolerate and endure all kinds of different
situations, some of them resulting in people getting injured or killed. Having so
much hurt in the country s history could have sparked a thought into the minds of
future politicians that they deserved better. They could have had a legitimate plan for
the country that they wanted to put to action, but the money completely distracted
them, resulting in a dishonorable government. Kenya s present day government is
just as corrupt as it has been in the past. In Migai Akech s article Abuse of power
and corruption in Kenya: Will the new constitution enhance government
accountability? He talks about how Kenya s government actually aides in the
country s dishonest nature. Akech also makes a point to explain how ...corruption is
less a cultural issue, and more of a money problem. The Kenyan people have not had
a history of being particularly greedy, even when they were aware that they were
being underpaid wherever they worked. In figure two, it shows how widespread
corruption is in the Kenyan government, compared to several other countries with
high percentages. This is overwhelmingly eye opening to just how much corruption
this country is dealing with in comparison to other countries that are just as corrupt as
Kenya. Chrispin Mwakideu s article Corruption Deeply Rooted in Kenya, Says Anti

Analysis Of David Hume s And John Locke
The philosophy of identity generally is defined by three distinct approaches:
identity of mass of matter, living being, and personal identity. In both David Hume
s and John Locke s essays they examine the meaning of identity in three concise sub
theories. The two agree on certain characteristics, but are dramatically differing on
others. As one evolves over time, are they identified as the same person? Hume
and Locke have written essays on their specific hypotheses about identity. The
authors provide the reader with various examples of their theories, including: are
you the same person you were a year ago if you remember, or do not remember,
being that person? Are you the same person if you lose a limb or body part, or even
change one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In his essay, he began by explaining the definition a small mass of matter, then he
progressed to his ideals on a human being. According to Locke, if a small mass of
matter were to change in the slightest, it would be considered to be something
different than it was before the change. Locke s theory describes that if one s
consciousness in one body is put into another body; they are considered the same
person. Everyone has their own thoughts, and this helps distinguish then to be their
own self (Locke, 115). Even though the physical appearance is different, that
person has the same consciousness, and therefore is the same person. Locke states
in his essay, Identity and Diversity that two things can t have one beginning,
because it is impossible for two things of the same kind to exist in the same instant
at the very same place. Thus, what had one beginning is the same thing; and what
had a different beginning in time and place from that is not the same but diverse
(Locke, 112). What he means by this is there cannot be an exact replica of an object
or human, that there is always going to be that single atom that is different. Locke
postulates that if one is able to remember themselves as they were younger, that they
will still identify as that person. David Hume s theory is marginally similar to Locke
s. He contends that the basic structure and operations of the human body are
comparable to Locke s theory. Hume s

the purpose of this experiment was to see if the time spent in the oven affect the
rise of a cupcake. More importantly how much it affects the rise. Also I wanted to
see if I could find the the perfect amount of time to bake it for. I was able to find the
time where I thought the cupcakes tasted the best at the end. Also this experiment
was easy enough to conduct. I first made the batter which was from a box. I
preheated the oven and filled each cupcake tin with one tablespoon batter each. I
then put it in the oven for 10 minutes. When they were done I took them out and

same procedure again for 15 minutes in the oven and again for 20. Making a total of 9
Analysis Of The Matrix Of Domination, By Patricia Hill...
The Matrix of Domination is described to be a pattern that explicates the role of
sociological oppression with race, gender, and class and how different classes may
interlock with each other. Patricia Hill Collins states in her article, the Black Feminist
Thought: Knowledge, Consciousness, and the Politics of Empowerment, Afrocentric
feminist thought speaks to the importance that oppression, Afrocentric feminist
thought speaks to the importance that knowledge plays in empowering oppressed
people (1990). Throughout the article, knowledge is mentioned as an important part
of overcoming dominance. Knowledge, although important for both the dominant
and the oppressed, is what is going to help the oppressed. Understanding the concept
of the matrix is to also understand that oppression is a creation set worth by

Analysis: Through this juxtaposition between life and death it because evident the
prominent shift in Raskolnikov stance when it comes to confessing at the crimes he

Capsicum genus brings to the people who consume it. The Naga King Chili Pepper

In this case, environment has a greater effect than genetics. A person s environment,
exposure to capsaicin (both frequency and hotness) has a greater effect on a person s
tolerance than their biological makeup. Also, it was mentioned in lecture, there are
supertasters, tasters, and nontasters. Supertasters have smaller and more papillae on
their tongue, which makes their sensitivity to tastes heighten. For nontasters, the
opposite is true. They have bigger and less papillae on their tongues, making them
less sensitive to tastes. Supertasters would be less tolerant to chilies like the Naga
King Chili because of their heighten senses, on the other hand, nontasters would be
less sensitive and would probably find the Naga King Chili more tolerable.
Relationship with the Tomorrow s Table topic: Tomorrow s Table suggests that
organic farming as well as genetic engineering of plants can help solve some of
today s food problems. At the end of the article, it was said that growing conditions
heavily affect the ways chilies turn out. The hotness of the chilies can change
drastically depending on growing conditions. Therefore, we can apply organic
farming and genetic engineering on the Naga King Peppers to make them mild. This
way, the Naga King Chilies will appeal to more consumers than just chiliheads.
Similarly, the same methods can be used on other extremely hot chilies to make them
more tolerable to the average human being. By doing so, it opens up

What Is The Theme Of Desert Places By Robert Frost Poem

Analysis Of The Poem The Daughter Of The Dancers
The Virtue Of Innocence
Innocence is a glorified trait in nearly any culture around the world. Many strive to
keep the innocence they are born with, and plenty others spend a lifetime attempting
to regain the innocence they have lost with age. In the following photos, innocence is
a common theme, which each photographer approaches in a unique way. There is a
dull and unsettling truth behind the innocent demonstration of young ladies acting
much more mature than their age. Manuel Alvarez Bravo is one of the premier
figures of modern photography and the main photographer among the immense
Mexican artists of the twentieth century. In The Daughter of the Dancers, Bravo
illustrates the idea of youthfulness on the verge of loosing its innocence. Sally Mann,
a photographer from the 1980s 90s, caught a reflection of grown up moves inside the
innocence and youth of adolescents in Candy Cigarette through her utilization of
organization, field point, and technique. In 1985 National Geographic photographer
Steve McCurry went through Afghan towns concentrating on the evacuees and
recording their hardships. The Afghan Girl is a classical image of lost innocence; the
girl was forced to grow up way to fast. Her innocence did not survive, but she did.
The innocence of children is secured by the individuals who adore them with the goal
that they grow up as actually unaffected by preventable undesirable contributions as
could be expected under the circumstances. With her back to the camera,

3.At the turn of the twentieth century, Americans were especially confident in their

These attitudes in combination with a series of political problems within the

The Portrayal Of Jesus In Death Valley
Although this is true this story contains many a violence in it. This film begins in
the regin of Herod the Great, who died in 4BC. Told by three magi a new king has

This massacre only takes place in the book of Matthew s, and does not seem to be

automatically jump to .22 LR when they hear .22 caliber, however there are
hundreds of variations of the .22 caliber loadings and cartridges. The .22 Short
rimfire cartridge is one of the longest running .22 caliber cartridges still in
production, it was introduced in 1857 for use in a Smith Wesson revolver1. This
development went on to lead to the .22 long, .22 extra long and a whole lineage of
.22 caliber rimfire cartridges all the way to the .22 WMR in 1959, another very
popular .22 rimfire design that has recently been giving the .22LR a run for its
money. The .22 caliber bullet continued on to be developed into centerfire... Show

While not being identical they are for the most part interchangeable in most
modern platforms. The powder charge and pressure are however different due to
small differences in the casing thickness.2 This round was officially adopted by
the US military in the Vietnam War for use in the M16 rifle. Its military adoption
led to its surge in popularity, though its reception was a hard one due to
misconceptions about it ability to kill. The .22 is still being used and developed to
this day. From new innovations like the 5.7x28mm or the .22 TCM the .22

most popular selling rifle in my store is obviously the AR 15 chambered in .223

To this day .22 has maintained popularity in the united states from rimfire to
centerfire and the popularity may wane but for the most part always
Active Shooter
Active School Shooter Introduction The intention of this paper is to look at and
present some issues and strategies that members of a school community think
about when trying to create safer schools. Particularly when addressing an active
shooter in a school setting. A major issue to consider when trying to keep all
schools safe, is the simple fact that no two schools are the same. Understanding
this can lead us to the conclusion that it is impossible to have one global plan or
program that can be 100% effective in all schools. Violence prevention programs
work best when they incorporate multiple strategies and address the full range of
possible acts of violence in schools. For any set of policies to work, it must be
established and... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It would be a wise idea for school administrators to have a comprehensive security
assessment of the school s physical design, safety policies, and emergency
procedures. Once again this must be conducted with the cooperation of school staff,
emergency personnel, students, and other school community members. Every
school has different needs and safety plans may vary. According to the IACP
(International Association of Chiefs of Police), there are twenty recommended
actions that can be used to prevent violence in a school setting. 1. Use school
resource officers (SROs) who may be provided by local law enforcement. SROs
often provide law enforcement, law related counseling, and law related education to
students, faculty, and staff. Continuity of officers in individual schools should be
encouraged, so that students and SROs develop a rapport. 2. Consider seeking one
or more probation officers for use on campus to help supervise and counsel students.
This would be especially appropriate for high schools with a significant caseload of
juveniles on probation. 3. Use trained personnel paid or volunteer selected
specifically to assist teachers and administrators in monitoring student behavior and
activities. Continuity of monitors within schools should be encouraged to facilitate
good rapport with students. Monitors should be trained on the different types of
violence likely to occur in the
Roanoke Colony Research Paper
Introduction It was generally assumed that Roanoke would become the first of many
permanent English settlements in the New World; however, those assumptions would
prove false after the colonists who travelled there disappeared under mysterious
circumstances. For over 400 years, the mystery of the Lost Colony has endured in the
Chesapeake region of America and has yet to be definitively solved. Beginning in the
1580s, a series of ventures and ill fated colonization attempts laid the context and set
the stage for the greatest vanishing act in American history. From supply shortages
and unfavorable weather, to misunderstandings and violent interactions with the
indigenous people all three attempts to settle at Roanoke Islandwere thwarted in one
fashion or another. The third colonization attempt would not prove to be a charm for
England, as these 118 colonists disappeared with little evidence of what had happened
to them.
Background
There were several factors that influenced Queen Elizabeth I of England to grant Sir
William Raleigh a charter to colonize North America on March 25, 1584 (Mallios
p.59). Tensions between the English and Spanish governments were strained at the
time that this charter was granted. England and Spain hoped to achieve several,
competing goals by colonizing the New World. ... Show more content on

Although Roanoke Island was not the site that White intended to colonize, the pilot
of the ships refused to carry the settlers any farther north once they had reached the
original settlement site. Upon reaching the location where Grenville had left his men,
White s party discovered that the men that had been charged to look after the
settlement had been attacked and subsequently killed by the native
Golden Years Research Paper
Our Golden Years Four years ago I thought I knew everything, I was invincible, and
no one or nothing could stop me. Then I started high school at Topeka High and
realized just how much I didn t know. Like no one dresses up in formal attire to
attend the homecoming school dance. If you have to walk from first floor to third
floor don t attack all three flights of stairs at once, and that if you want someone to
make a SHORT announcement on the intercom, don t ask Mr. Hays. On a serious
note, I am proud to say that I didn t know everything back then...and I know that I
don t know everything now. But I am appreciative of the lessons that I have learned.
I hope each and every one of you are able to apply the GOLD standards to our future

Remember if you want others to respect you, you first have to give respect. We
should give respect to our elders automatically because they have paved the way.
We should give respect to our teachers because they are sharing their time and
knowledge with us to help us grow as individuals. We should give respect to our
parents because they provide guidance and support in helping us avoid obstacles
they have already overcome. And most importantly we should respect ourselves.
When others see that you have self respect, they respect you more. O ownership.
Marie Kondo once said, It s important to understand your ownership pattern because
it is an expression of the values that guide your life. The question of what you want
to own is actually the question of how you want to live your life . At this very
moment, on this very day, we have the ability to change the course of our lives. We
have to take ownership of planning for our own success. We have to accept life s
challenges and be willing to invest in working hard to achieve our
Second World War Dbq Analysis
The Second World War was the first and only conflict that saw the use of atomic
weapons of mass destruction. During the war, Japan refused to surrender and as
result, America dropped two atomic bombs on Japan at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
Seemingly, this was to prevent a full invasion of japan, which would undoubtedly cost
substantial American lives. In addition to the warfare advantages this would provide,
this also handed diplomatic advantages to the United States. (Doc E)
Diplomatically, the use of the Atomic weapons would put a swift end to the war,
which would assuredly keep Russia out of the conflict and prevent them from
gaining more power or influence, especially sense Russia had demands in place that
would allow Russia to gain more

TRAVEL ARTICLE STREET FOOD IN LUCKNOW
Lucknow, the land of Nawabs and Kebabs we have heard this phrase about a
million times from people around us . I visited Lucknow last month and seriously
there is much more to Lucknow other than the Kebabs. Lucknow has evolved
drastically with time. It is one of the largest and fastest growing cities in Northern
India with a population of 2.81 million people belonging to different cultures and
religions. People from various regions have migrated to this big city with the dream
of a better life. The cuisine of Lucknow is a reflection of this. There is 100% no
doubt that there is no match to the Kababs and Mutton Biryani of Tunday Kababi or
the Chai and Samosas of Sharma Tea Stall . But for the past decade this City has
seen growth of some innovative Street food stalls which are challenging the
dominance of various food brands in Lucknow. These food stalls are cateringto all
the sections I.e from foodies to health freaks at very pocket friendly rates . They
are serving comfort food with a twist . These food stalls have become a rave
among the masses. I started my search for some amazing but lesser known Street
food stalls in Lucknow with the help of my localite friend Gunjan. The first thing
we tried was the tea from Raju ki Tapri outside the Charbagh Railway station (near
gate number 2) and let me tell you the chai here is amazing, Raju serves about ten
flavors of chai using ayurvedic herbs like Tulsi ,
Testing And Analyzing The Quality Of Water
Introduction Testing and analyzing the quality of water can be used to determine
if the water is safe or not to ingest. Some tests performed on water will help
determine if the water is bacteriologically free, contains chemical contaminant such
as nitrates, the acidity of the water itself, or to see the amount of chloride in water.
Hydrology is the study of water. It has evolved as a science due to the need of
understanding the complex water system and to help solve water problems (USGS).
In this lab, a series of titration were conducted in order to see the amount of calcium
present in different samples of water in the state of Florida. Measuring the amount of

In order to dissolve the solution completely, the solution itself had to have a pH of
8. To achieve this, 8 drops of ammonium buffer was added, making the remains of
the EDTA dissolve completely. Titrating Water Sample #1 to test the hardness of
water, the first sample used wasDasani water. 25ml of the Dasani water was poured
out into the beaker. 10 drops of Eriochrome Black T indicator was placed into the
water sample to make the sample turn a shade of pink. The magnetic stirrer was
then placed into the flask as the flask was then placed under the burette. Titrate the
solution until the solution turns a light blue. Record the change in volume of the
EDTA solution. To ensure the accuracy of this process, two more trials were
conducted. Titrating Water Sample #2, #3 and #4 in order to see the difference of
water hardness from different manufacturers, Zephyrhills and filtered water
samples were used to conduct the experiment. 10 drops of the EBT indicator was
added into each of the 25ml sample and then placed under the burette to titrate.
After the water sample turns a light shade of blue, record the change in volume.
Repeat the process two more times for each sample to ensure accurate
measurements. Titrating Tap Water and Deionized Water 25ml of each sample was
used for titration to see how big of a difference the amount of calcium was in each
sample. One drop of indicator was added to each of the sample
Monk And The Riddle
The book that I have chosen to review is The Monk and the Riddle . There are
several quotes in the book that relate to business entrepreneurship, however the
quotes can also be used in everyday life. Mr. Komisa s book is similar to an
instruction manual on what to do when life throws you curves, while you are trying
to walk a straight path in pursuing yours dream. Although you may stray off the path
you must gather yourself and regroup, get back on the path and continue on to reach
your goals learning every step of the way. Analysis
Komisar s riddles are aimed to inspire people to think about their life and what they
want to make of it. There a several quotes and statements in his book that will make a
person think outside of the box, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We must be proactive making things happen instead of waiting to make things
happen, but we have less risk than leaving things to chance. Starting your own
business is a risk you have to believe in yourself and be will to take the risk even
when things don t seem to be perfect. There are two options if you fall on your face
you can either learn from it and try again not making the same mistakes or give up.
Financial management is also important as an entrepreneur you have to be leader
when it comes to stepping out on a limb for what you believe you are capable of
doing. It requires planning and budgeting for the cost of starting a business, keeping
the business up and running, and also having a back up plan for unplanned
expenditures that may occur.
Conclusion
The Monk and the Riddle has several quotes and lessons the primary theme is
perseverance through failure. To be successful in our endeavors , we must be able
to except failure and learn from it. We must remain passionate about our goals and
do all that we can to reach them, knowing that there are things in life that we
cannot control no matter how hard we try. Failure is a part of life and as long as we
are to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off we have

The Color Purple By Margaret Atwood
The Color Purple is a 1985 film directed by Steven Spielberg and focuses on the life
of Celie, an African American girl brought up around vigorous abuse. At a young
age she is married off to her Mister and from then serves him, doing anything to
meet his needs and pleasure him. She lives this life of slavery and assault, to one
day be reunited with her sister, Nettie, in Africa. A novel in which focuses on similar
themes to that of The Color Purpleis a 1985 dystopian novel written by Canadian
author Margaret Atwood. The book is written in first person and is a story about the

When Harpo (her Misters son) asked Celie what should I do about Sophia Celie
responded with beat her . This displayed that Celie thinks her identity is to answer
to her Mister and if she doesn t she will be beat; she doesn t really know her true
self and capabilities. Although Celie doesn t really understand her identity she still
has one. In contrast, in The Handmaids Tale most of the characters aren t even
given an identity, they are nameless. No character is represented by their own
names, more part of groups such as Handmaid, Wife or Martha. This shows that in
this novel the body of women and the functions are more important than their minds
and identity. Most women were often described by their features, their eyes and
hands , this is to show the audience the lack of identity they hold and how their
psychical features are deemed more important than their mental ability. When one
Ofglen is replaced with another the Handmaid quotes this woman has been my
partner for two weeks. I don t know what happened to the one before . This then
shows how disconnected the women are and how the use of the word partner is
used to hide the identity of the person. This also illustrates that the personality of the
women is not essential for the job at hand, as they are just easily replaced with
someone else. The Handmaids Tale and The Color Purple analyse the ways women
are destined for one identity, the identity to serve men and continue to
Army Training Requirements And Resources System
Army Training Requirements and Resources System The United States Army has
always expressed the importance to service members about taking the initiative to
professionally develop themselves, have the drive, and determination to excel past
their peers. In order to do so, the Army offers several ways for a Soldierto
professionally develop themselves during their off duty hours. The Army Training
Requirements and Resources System (ATRRS) is one of the foundations established
that a service member can use to do online training and get credited for that training.
In order to be successful with this system, the Soldier needs to know and understand
how the system performs along with how to navigate the website and the course
catalog. Once... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This network stores information on all course material, instructors, and requirements
for making the courses available to all service members. Class schedules are also
stored in ATRRS for certain years. The database also gives information such as; the
individuals name, the rank of the student, the status of the class, and it even shows
the grade that the individual scored. During a time of war, ATRRS collaborates with
the Mobilization Training Planning system, which is responsible for the mobilization,
training, and deployment of service members. While an individual is conducting
training through ATRRS, different types of data is collected and used to enhance
future training. When ATRRS was created, the Army established it for the National
Guard and Reserve Soldiers as well. The Army made it a point that every soldier
regardless of component, had the same opportunity to progress themselves and
further their individual training. There are two different ways to access the ATRRS
system. If a Soldier simply wishes to register for and take a course, all that service
member needs is a Common Access Card (CAC). Access and management of school
files, unit training, or statistical data take approval from a more senior leader within
the unit. When approval is given, the individual wanting to access all these files must
request an official ATRRS log in username and password, which can be obtained
from the ATRRS

The Importance and History of the Steam Engine Essay
The wonderful progress of the present century is, in a very great degree, due to the
invention and improvement of the steam engine, and to the ingenious application of
its power to kinds of work that formerly taxed the physical energies of the human
race. ~Robert H. Thurston
The steam engine can easily be considered the single most important invention of the
entire industrial revolution. There is not one part of industry present in today s
society that can be examined without coming across some type of reference or
dependence upon the steam engine. But, who deserves the credit for this great
invention? Some give the credit to James Watt while others claim that Thomas
Newcomen was the original inventor. However, the idea of the ... Show more content

Thurston.
The idea using the power of steam to our advantage goes back nearly twenty one
centuries. A learned writer in ancient Alexandria, named Hero, wrote a manuscript
describing various devices and ideas of the time. Although it is not proven that
Hero was the inventor of any of these devices, he is given credit for the earliest
mention of steam power. Hero describes a method to open the doors of a temple
with the action of a fire on the alter at the front of the temple. A series of pipes runs
between the alter and the temple doors. The force of the steam created by the fire
on the alter is strong enough to open the temple doors. The essential principle that
Hero used was to change heat energy into mechanical energy or work. Supposedly,
Hero continued his work and ended up creating what is often called the First
Steam Engine. Hero s engine is featured on below on the right. The cauldron or
bowl like portion AB holds water. There is a steam tight cover place over top of
the cauldron. Two pipes extend from the lid and suspend a globe directly above the
cauldron. The water is heated, causing steam to be created and forced through the
pipes. The globe then fills with steam. Pipes K and H are located on opposite sides
of the globe and allow the steam to escape when the pressure becomes uneven. The
escaping steam then causes the globe to spin on its axis.

Yum Brand And Starbucks Case Study
Each company in this case study provides a slightly different service in the same
industry. Their customer base can also be slightly different but for the most part
they are battling for the same consumer dollar. The three corporations that we will
be reviewing are Yum Brands, Inc., Panera Bread and Starbucks. Yum Brands Inc.
is made up of a group of 6 fast food type restaurants and is located internationally.
Starbucks is an international company focusing on mostly coffee shop patrons
with a small variety of food options. Panera Bread focuses on more of a healthy
alternative to fast food and also provides a coffee shop type atmosphere, a mix
between Yum Brand and Starbucks services. The comparison will be based off the
data provided for the fiscal years of 2009 and 2010. Yum Brand and Panera Bread
fiscal years end in December while Starbucks use October to September as their
fiscal year. By analyzing the difference between the net cash and net income
including non controlling interest respond to three questions in the case study, this
paper will gage the strength and long term profitability potential of each company.
Finally indicate if any of the companies appear to have a cash flowproblem.

decrease substantially from 2009 to 2010, showing that they were better positioned
to pay debt in 2009. The risk for defaulting on debt greatly increased, but the ratio
dropping could be due to the payoff of long term debt in 2009. Yum Brand paid
dividends so the operating cash flow by cash dividend ratio increased this means that
the Yum Brand is able to pay dividends 4 times in that fiscal year up from 3 the
previous year. This is a nice selling point to investors. Yum Brand numbers show a

Essay On The Governess In The Turn Of The Screw By
Henry...
Henry James was a prominent figure in Victorian Era literature known for his
attention to conscious perception and ambiguous writing. Because of the mystery
shrouding his works, people have become adept at reading between the lines and
filling in his plot holes with their own inferred ideas. His book The Turn of the Screw
is one of his most vague and intriguing pieces and has therefore been a subject of
much conflict among critics. Of all possible theories, most boil down to the reliability
of the governess; is she telling the truth, or has she gone insane? Given James
background living with a philosopher father, a psychologist brother and a sister with
numerous mental health issues, critics often choose the latter theory. The governess...

The governess is struggling to ignore her desires and maintain society s standards
of a perfect woman as well as preserve her innocence and reliability as an authority
figure. Since she was taught to look down upon women who deviate from societal
expectations, she imagines Jessel in black, pale, and dreadful with a dishonorable
connection to Quint (James 50, 52). The apparition of Miss Jessel forms from all
the unacceptable sexual motives she finds within herself; a way to reprimand her
behavior without villainizing herself . In addition, Jessel s affair with Quint reflects
the governess s unconscious desire for a forbidden relationship with the master of
Bly (Rodriguez 2). The ghosts provide her with a method to play out her fantasies
while avoiding the consequences of an illegitimate child and harsh judgment, issues
Jessel and Quint had experienced in their lives. Furthermore, the governess is afraid
of scaring or tainting the innocence of the children with her abnormal behavior which
is evident through her fear of the ghosts corrupting them. By projecting her
dangerous, evil qualities on ghosts, she convinces herself that she will be inherently
better at watching the children, gaining their trust and even saving them (Otten 2).
The governess s method of projecting her flaws onto unseen ghosts gives her a sense
of security and

  • 2. The Roles of Jennifer Lawrence and Mile Cyrus as Role... Celebrities have a great effect on the people we become. Some people spend so much time consumed by the entertainment world that they begin to idolize certain celebrities in hopes of becoming like them. Two major starlets in the eye of countless teenage girls around the world would be Jennifer Lawrence, known for her starring role as Katniss Everdeen in the film The Hunger Games, and Miley Cyrus, a hit singer with number one songs, We Can t Stop and Wrecking Ball . These two stars both have large and supportive fan bases, but which celebrity is the better role model for teenage girls is the question at hand. Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her beliefs, modesty, and humbleness. To ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance, Lawrence opts for classic, modest styles when attending red carpet events. Lawrence s clothing choices almost always leave the rest of her body up to the imagination. In contrast, Cyrus does whatever she pleases without keeping the society watching in mind. For example, she recently performed at the Video Music Awards in immodest clothing while dancing provocatively. Her music videos have often included footage of her with just her bare body. The idyllic style of Jennifer Lawrence outshines the distasteful style of Miley Cyrus, making Jennifer Lawrence the better role model. Finally, Jennifer Lawrence is a better role model for teenage girls than Miley Cyrus because of her humbleness. Celebrities typically have a difficult time with relating to teenage, but Jennifer Lawrence makes it seem easy. Lawrence shows she is humble by simply being herself and not caring about what Hollywood has to say about her. For example, Jennifer Lawrence had this to say about her career: Not to sound rude, but [acting] is stupid. Everybody s like, How can you remain with a level head? And I m like, Why would I ever get cocky? I m not saving anybody s life. There are doctors who save lives and firemen who run into burning buildings. I m making movies. It s stupid. (61 Hilariously) Despite her star status, she still remains humble. Unlike Lawrence, Miley Cyrus lives the

  • 4. Just-in-Time History The technique was first used by the Ford Motor Company as described explicitly by Henry Ford s My Life and Work (1923): We have found in buying materials that it is not worthwhile to buy for other than immediate needs. We buy only enough to fit into the plan of production, taking into consideration the state of transportation at the time. If transportation were perfect and an even flow of materials could be assured, it would not be necessary to carry any stock whatsoever. The carloads of raw materials would arrive on schedule and in the planned order and amounts, and go from the railway cars into production. That would save a great deal of money, for it would give a very rapid turnover and thus decrease the amount of money tied up in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The chief engineer at Toyota in the 1950s, Taiichi Ohno (大野 иЂђдёЂ), examined accounting assumptions and realized that another method was possible. The factory could implement JIT which would require it to be made more flexible and reduce the overhead costs of retooling and thereby reduce the economic lot size to fit the available warehouse space. JIT is now regarded by Ohno as one of the two pillars of the Toyota Production System. Therefore over a period of several years, Toyota engineers redesigned car models for commonality of tooling for such production processes as paint spraying and welding. Toyota was one of the first to apply flexible robotic systems for these tasks. Some of the changes were as simple as standardizing the whole sizes used to hang parts on hooks. The number and types of fasteners were reduced in order to standardize assembly steps and tools. In some cases, identical sub assemblies could be used in several models. Toyota engineers then determined that the remaining critical bottleneck in the retooling process was the time required to change the stamping dies used for body parts. These were adjusted by hand, using crowbars and wrenches. It sometimes took as long as several days to install a large, multi ton die set and adjust it for acceptable quality. Further, these were usually installed one at a time by a team

  • 6. Nothing Gold Can Stay With the impending end of every good thing comes a chance for a new beginning and a chance for a perfect moment. In a world where perfect moments seem scarce, one is constantly reminded how temporary life truly is. Around every corner, something always seems to be going wrong war, poverty, famine and yet some people still manage to find the best in every situation. Robert Frosts Nothing Gold Can Stay and the film Gladiator externally showcase completely different concepts; yet relate in a way that allows one to realize how short life can be. A piece about nature and another about the life of a Roman soldier; One simply cannot fathom how two pieces as diverse as these can correlate. However, both pieces examine the idea that life s greatest... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Regardless of its short length and appearance as a nature poem, Nothing Gold Can Stay manages to touch the soul of each reader and allow them to fully understand the mortality of life. The poem narrates the short lived experience of Spring s first moments and the transient nature of life as described by Frost (Kearney Web). Lines 1 4 describe gold as nature s first color its most beautiful and the hardest color to hold. In line 4, Frost analyzes how short lived this moment of pure happiness is. This line is where the beautiful scene of flourishing nature takes a turn. Notice that it does so exactly halfway through the poem (Birmingham Web). The momentary nature of line 4 signifies life s greatest moments slowly beginning to end. The first half of the poem explains the beginning of nature and its most beautiful moments, yet a shift occurs in line 5 Then leaf subsides to leaf, showing how the moment of gold is gone and nature is simply nature once again a different, more realistic kind of beauty. The reference to Eden in line 6 utilizes a mortality in the cycle of human life birth, life and then eventually death. Life s golden moments are temporary, just like the existence of a loved one or even one s self. There are cycles of greatness and loss throughout life, as well as the poem. The poem concludes with a rhymed couplet that shows how dawn loses it s luster and soon turns to day, showing that like the title, nothing gold can truly stay. Frost uses this poem as a felix culpa metaphor displaying the fact that although temporary, the greatest moments would have no merit if they were not temporary. There is no good without bad and, conversely, there is no bad without good. Those golden moments in life and in the poem would never be appreciated fully if they were eternal, because there would be no ordinary
  • 7. Correlation Between Alcohol And Alcohol Results The amount of hours a person works a week is negatively correlated to an individual s dependency to alcohol. The less hours a person works per week the more they will be dependent on alcohol. On average, the individuals in the sample worked a low amount of hours a week (M = 11.31, SD = 14.9) and had a moderately low dependency on alcohol (M = 31.11, SD = 14.26). In addition, the confidence intervals looking at the amount of hours worked per week indicated that the participants continued to work low hours (95% CI = [8.96, 13.83]). Along with, both the upper and lower bounds of the alcohol decency score showing reaming consistent with a modestly low dependency on alcohol (95% CI = [29.02, 33.58]). When a Spearman s correlation analysis was used a negative correlation was found indicating that a the less amount of hours a person worked a week the higher their dependency on alcohol is. This correlation supported the hypotheses. A Spearman s correlation was used because thee out of the four test for a normally distributed population were violated and the sample size was over 100. However, the correlation was not significant rs = .114, n = 152, p = .08 (one tailed). The amount of hours worked in a week had an extremely small effect on a person s dependency to alcohol r2 = .01. This incredibly small effect size is consistent with the results of the significance test. With the correlation having no significance then it is accurate to say that a person s work hours had
  • 8. The Panda Bear Or Giant Panda The panda bear or giant panda is located in the south central area of China. It is recognized for its appearance. It belongs to the Carnivore group even though it eats 99% bamboo. Pandas found in the wild will eat other grasses, wild tubers, or meat in the form of birds, rodents, or carrion. Pandas in captivity receive honey, eggs, fish, yams, shrub leaves, oranges, bananas, or other specially prepared foods. Pandas live in mountain ranges because deforestation has driven them from lowland areas. The panda is an endangered species. According to a 2007 report, there are 239 pandas living in captivity in China, 27 pandas living outside the country, and 1,590 pandas living in the wild. The panda bear is a great symbol in China. This animal is noticed because it is on the endangered species list. The red panda, though it shares the name of panda, is not a bear. It is more closely related to a raccoon or skunk and is an endangered species. This panda is called the red panda, lesser panda, or red cat bear. This animal is not closely related to the giant panda or panda bear. This is an animal that is adorable and cuddly looking but it also is so much larger than it appears. Cultural Symbolism: The panda bear is not only a fluffy creature it is also symbolic to China. The panda can symbolize friendship and peace. The colors on the panda help resemble the Yin Yang by showing how the two colors can mix and with the pandas nature it backs this up. The panda is really peaceful and

Essay Racial and Ethnic Identity The African, Mexican, and Native persons have all interacted with the Dominant American culture in some magnitude; consequently altering each different group s racial and ethnic Identity. Throughout the semester, I have discovered that in much literature writers had an ideal perspective on their own identity as well as the identity that the dominant culture influenced them to have. While doing some research I wanted to see what would be a transitional time frame for a person to be un conditioned of many negative symbolic meanings in regard to minorities and immigrants. My research has shown that there was a hierarchical scheme where an individual can monitor his/her identity progression from one level to the next. This... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This mindset is shown in Toni Morrison s The Bluest Eye. Pecola visited and knew three women above her apartment who embraced their lifestyle. Speaking about them Pecola says, Sugar coated whores, they called them, and did not yearn to be in their shoes. Their only respect was for what they would have described as good Christian colored women (Morrison 56). The second stage in the process of developing racial and ethnic identity is encounter. This is when a person questions the negative stereotypes that have become a part of their ethnic identity. This is evident in How it Feels to be Colored Me by Zora Neale Hurston. She mentions her first encounter when she realized she was different; It seemed that I had suffered a sea change. I was not Zora of Orange County anymore. I was now a colored girl. I found it out in certain ways. In my heart as well as in the mirror, I became a fast brown warranted not to rub or run (Hurston). The third stage is Immersion Emersion. This is when a person begins to rid themselves of their ethnic self hatred and discover their traditional culture and customs (Cushner, McClelland and Safford). This is evident in The School Days of an Indian Girl by Zitkala Sa. Here as a returning student who has been assimilated to American ways, changes from a school girl back into her traditional culture: I could speak English almost as well as my brother, but I was not properly

  • 12. Christopher Columbus, Andrew Jackson, And President Van Buren This war began when the White man crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of independence. They left Europe and slowly began fighting for a better life which eventually led to their break away from the harsh brutalities of the British government. When, in all reality, their search for independence led to the abolishment of the freedom of the Native Americans. Instead of placing light onto this subject, it is swept under the rug in schools across America today. I believe that the way the American government chose to gain territory was selfish and ignorant and led to the loss of many cultures and precious lives. Some of the ways this happened was by the removal of rights, battles, untruthful treaties, and confiscation of land. In many ways American history books and movies portray Christopher Columbus, Andrew Jackson, and President Van Buren to be American heroes, but these so called heroes are actually murderers, thieves, and liars. Jackson and Van Buren believed that the Indians needed to become civilized and convert to Christianity, yet the actions these two presidents practiced were opposite of what the religion boasts. Obviously, they were the ones who needed to become civilized and remember where they came from and that what they were taking away from the Indians is exactly what they had fought for. Whenever Jackson was elected president, he implemented laws that did away with the tribe as a legal unit and made them subject to militia duty and state taxes,

From such a harsh past, Kipling was able to describe several topics through the use of multiple stylistic elements. To begin, Kipling uses a metaphor heavy writing style to effectively get his point across. Here, Kipling presents himself with an opportunity to further elaborate on the subject. While he could have described what the reader can obtain or gain from the world, Kipling keeps it open to our imagination to decide what s in it. Another example of where Kipling could ve elaborated his ideas with imagery is when he exaggerated that Nine hundred and ninety nine of em go / by your looks, or your acts, or your glory ( The Thousandth Man Lines 11 12). The lack of adjectives used by Kipling in this text prevents him from being able to describe each of these aspects. In 1991, major discrepancies in the prices of multiple long maturity US Treasury bonds seemed to appear in the market. An employee of the firm Mercer and Associates, Samantha Thompson, thought of a way to exploit this opportunity in order to take advantage of a positive pricing difference by substituting superior bonds for existing holdings. Thompson created two synthetic bonds that imitated the cash flows of the 8Вј May 00 05 bond; one for if the bond had been called at the year 2000, and one for if it hadn t been called and was held to its maturity at year 2005. Through similar calculations of the first synthetic bond, she found that she needed 0.0704 units of the 2000 STRIP, and the price of this synthetic bond was $100.43. What Thompson found was surprising because both of these synthetic prices were less than the ask price of the 00 05 treasury bond. In normal markets this shouldn t be the case because the synthetic bond would be worth more to investors since it does not have a redemption right to the government. In other words, the callable bond should have a lower price than the synthetic noncallable bond. 2. There are two ways that Thompson could exploit this pricing anomaly that she found. If she already held the 00 05 treasury bond, then she could immediately capitalize on the price discrepancy by selling the 00 05 treasury bond for the bid price of $101.125 and buying one of these synthetic bonds. Whether to buy the 2000 synthetic bond or 2005 synthetic bond is up for debate and opinion but it might be suggested to go with the 2005 one since the price of $98.78 is even smaller than the price of $100.43 and there would be larger price impact. By selling the 00 05 bond and buying the 2005 treasury bond, she would be getting the same cash flows for an immediate lower price. The second way that Thompson could exploit this pricing anomaly would be if

I believe that ratings on movies and shows should not exist because a movie could be rated R but the content in the movie is not bad at all, all kids will act differently to what they watch but if there has to be ratings I think I have a better rating system for all kids and parents to help. When you watched the movie you either ignored the rating or your parents let you watchit on your own at home. If they let you watch it, because they already watched it themselves, then they are on the right track. I m here to tell you why I think parents should be the ones to tell what their kid watches by actually watching the movie first so that ratings will not exist at all! When you watch an R rated movie what s usually in the movie? It s either sexual content, nudity, violence and/or language. When parents see an R rating they think that it has sexual content, nudity, violence and language so then they don t let their kid watch it. Sometimes it s just rated like this because it swears a couple times. I also doubt that a grade 7 has never heard the F word before from their parents or a school friend. It really should not be rated R for that. Another reason for parents to watch the movie first instead of just looking at the rating is because the movie could be rated 13+ but then have other bad things happen in the movie that they are not supposed to watch. If the parents had not just read the rating and

Adolescence Is The Time Of Development Essay Adolescence is the time of development that starts at pubescence and ends at adulthood; the regular age extent is from 12 to 18 years, and this phase of development has some anticipated physical, cognitive, and social turning points (University of Rochester Medical Center Rochester, 2016). Pubescence includes particular physiological changes in an individual such as tallness, weight, body organization, sex attributes, and circulatory and respiratory frameworks. While their bodies are changing, so are their minds. They begin to develop the power of reasoning and morality. Kids who find themselves in this stage begin to do more complex thinking; their minds progress from concrete operations such as combining, separating, and ordering to reasoning and comparing ideas and point of views. It is also at this stage that the social development of kids begin. Kids around the age of twelve begin to form their identity. They begin to look for relationships where they can reside and find their sense of self. As Erik Erikson describes, they begin to experience the psychosocial stages of development; kids begin to develop trust or mistrust, competence or inferiority, intimacy or isolation. As one evolves over time, are they identified as the same person? Hume and Locke have written essays on their specific hypotheses about identity. Are you the same person if you lose a limb or body part, or even change one... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In his essay, he began by explaining the definition a small mass of matter, then he progressed to his ideals on a human being. According to Locke, if a small mass of matter were to change in the slightest, it would be considered to be something different than it was before the change. Locke s theory describes that if one s consciousness in one body is put into another body; they are considered the same person. Everyone has their own thoughts, and this helps distinguish then to be their own self (Locke, 115). Even though the physical appearance is different, that person has the same consciousness, and therefore is the same person. Locke states in his essay, Identity and Diversity that two things can t have one beginning, because it is impossible for two things of the same kind to exist in the same instant at the very same place. Thus, what had one beginning is the same thing; and what had a different beginning in time and place from that is not the same but diverse (Locke, 112). What he means by this is there cannot be an exact replica of an object or human, that there is always going to be that single atom that is different. Locke postulates that if one is able to remember themselves as they were younger, that they will still identify as that person. David Hume s theory is marginally similar to Locke s. He contends that the basic structure and operations of the human body are comparable to Locke s theory. Hume s

Deafening silence engulfs all surroundings, on its way to eventually evoking insanity. The smell of cold, dry air freezes over all breathing pathways, caging in the ribs, preventing the ability to inhale and exhale, leaving behind the taste of metal as a reminder of a chaotic state of mind. Mentally trapped in chosen solidarity, Robert Frost, William Shakespeare, and Elizabeth Bishop were able to express their hidden despair through poetry. Frost having experienced major loss in his life, Shakespeare lying to himself to cope with his actions, and Bishop constantly masking her pain while in the eyes of the public. Throughout the poem, the description of a cold, dark night is meant to represent the intensity of the depression that Frost was feeling. In the final stanza, Frost reveals that I have it in me so much nearer home, To scare myself with my own desert places , it being the darkness previously mentioned in the poem. The desert places introduced in the final line are a representation of the dark emotions Frost was experiencing, and

There is a dull and unsettling truth behind the innocent demonstration of young ladies acting much more mature than their age. Manuel Alvarez Bravo is one of the premier figures of modern photography and the main photographer among the immense Mexican artists of the twentieth century. In The Daughter of the Dancers, Bravo illustrates the idea of youthfulness on the verge of loosing its innocence. Sally Mann, a photographer from the 1980s 90s, caught a reflection of grown up moves inside the innocence and youth of adolescents in Candy Cigarette through her utilization of organization, field point, and technique. Roanoke Colony Research Paper Introduction It was generally assumed that Roanoke would become the first of many permanent English settlements in the New World; however, those assumptions would prove false after the colonists who travelled there disappeared under mysterious circumstances. For over 400 years, the mystery of the Lost Colony has endured in the Chesapeake region of America and has yet to be definitively solved. Beginning in the 1580s, a series of ventures and ill fated colonization attempts laid the context and set the stage for the greatest vanishing act in American history. From supply shortages and unfavorable weather, to misunderstandings and violent interactions with the indigenous people all three attempts to settle at Roanoke Islandwere thwarted in one fashion or another. The third colonization attempt would not prove to be a charm for England, as these 118 colonists disappeared with little evidence of what had happened to them. Background There were several factors that influenced Queen Elizabeth I of England to grant Sir William Raleigh a charter to colonize North America on March 25, 1584 (Mallios p.59). A learned writer in ancient Alexandria, named Hero, wrote a manuscript describing various devices and ideas of the time. Although it is not proven that Hero was the inventor of any of these devices, he is given credit for the earliest mention of steam power. Hero describes a method to open the doors of a temple with the action of a fire on the alter at the front of the temple. A series of pipes runs between the alter and the temple doors. The force of the steam created by the fire on the alter is strong enough to open the temple doors. The essential principle that Hero used was to change heat energy into mechanical energy or work. Supposedly, Hero continued his work and ended up creating what is often called the First Steam Engine. Hero s engine is featured on below on the right. The cauldron or bowl like portion AB holds water. There is a steam tight cover place over top of the cauldron. Two pipes extend from the lid and suspend a globe directly above the cauldron. The water is heated, causing steam to be created and forced through the pipes. The globe then fills with steam. Pipes K and H are located on opposite sides of the globe and allow the steam to escape when the pressure becomes uneven. The escaping steam then causes the globe to spin on its axis. The power
