I began my research first by watching a documentary on Abu Ghraib. In 2008, director Errol
Morris released a documentary called standard operating procedure. The purpose of this video was
to demonstrate how powerful pictures are and how American soldiers had no respect for human

because the music adds suspense and persuades me to take an approach. Not only did Morris use
pathos but he also had a distinct style when directing this short film. His style consists of having
his interviewees talk directly into the camera. He uses a method that is known as interrotron,
which had made his works famous. Interrotron is when the director is seen as opposed to a script,
meaning the person being questioned is looking precisely at the director. I think this is important

Todd Haynes s Safe is a difficult film to analyze for its themes are not simple to decipher. As I
write this paper, no words can justify the concept of the film. Instead, it raises more questions but I
will do my best to answer them. All in all, the film is an eerie, horror movie about the nightmares
of the normal life. It follows the story of a suburban housewife named Carol White (Julianne
Moore) who develops an illness her doctor cannot diagnose and her husband (Xander Berkeley)
