April Raintree Essay
Crafting an essay on the subject of "April Raintree" poses its own set of challenges. Firstly, the
complexity of the narrative and the intricate layers of the characters demand a thorough
understanding of the novel. Analyzing the themes, character motivations, and the broader socio-
cultural context presented in the book requires a keen eye and deep critical thinking.
Moreover, the emotional depth of the story can make it challenging for the writer to maintain
objectivity while still conveying the profound impact of the narrative. Addressing sensitive topics
such as identity, racism, and familial relationships necessitates a nuanced approach that balances
empathy with a critical lens.
Organizing the essay can be another hurdle. Deciding on the structure, whether to follow a
chronological or thematic order, and ensuring a coherent flow of ideas are crucial aspects that
require careful consideration. Additionally, integrating quotes and evidence from the text to
support arguments and analysis demands a meticulous approach to detail.
Furthermore, the task involves more than just summarizing the plot; it requires delving into the
underlying messages and exploring the author's intentions. This depth of analysis demands ample
research and a comprehensive understanding of literary devices employed by the author.
In conclusion, writing an essay on "April Raintree" demands a combination of literary insight,
critical thinking, and sensitivity to the themes presented in the narrative. It is a task that goes
beyond mere summarization, requiring the writer to navigate complex emotions and societal
issues. However, with dedication and a thoughtful approach, it is possible to create a compelling
essay that captures the essence of the novel.

the investment possible. When investors find a place that they can securely invest
they would bring their money and asset to this place, in return both investors and the
society where the rule of law is applicable are winner. In this environment, the income

The First Meditation By Rene Descartes
Topic: How does Descartes argue that mind and body are distinct? Is he right? Am
I real, or imaginary? In the First Meditation, Rene Descartes presents the main
falsehoods in which he believed during his life, and the subsequent faultiness he
experienced concerning the body of knowledge. The philosopher considers that it
is never too late to rethink the knowledge about his personal being from the very
foundations, and builds his thoughts on a certain ground starting from common
things. It would be impossible to doubt each thing separately, so he expresses his
doubt to the basic principles of knowledge he has already gained, since a
conclusion would surely be doubted if its premise was doubted. He starts by
doubting basic senses, by comparing feels in reality vs. in dreams. For example,
even if I consciously feel warm when I am walking in the sun, I could not claim that
I am hundred В‐percentage sure I am awake, since I would feel it the same way
when I was in dreams. Descartes presents this idea to show the doubt of reality and its
elements. Also, he concludes that the common things we perceive are fashioned, and
knowledge based on that can be doubted, such as physics and astronomy. This
category of knowledge are different from geometry and arithmetic, which contain
certain and definiteness in the simplest thing. By doubting the sense and knowledge
based on it, Descartes argued his approach that the body and mindare two absolutely
distinctive things. Descartes mentions God

The Importance of Literary Devices in The Seven Ages of...
All the world s a stage the men and women merely players . This line is the
beginning of the The Seven Ages of Man and is a recurring question throughout the
poem. You may wonder how the world is stage, and through his use of similes,
metaphors, and imagery Shakespeare explains this elaborates on this question.
William Shakespeare s use of similes in the Seven Ages of Man helps to start the
poem and give it a meaning early on by adding emphasis on certain topics. For
example in the beginning he uses the men and women merely players (Line 2) to
explain that people don t own the world but live in it. By using this simile he explains
how people progress through life like a play, making an entrance to the stage and
leaving afterwards. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Furthermore Shakespeare compares The Last Age to childishness and oblivion
meaning that after you have gone through all the stages everything you have built
up demolishes and you start back at the first stage. The last line of the poem helps
you to determine how the play ends and because this comparison is made it makes
you aware of people in your life that have gone through a few of the stages
described by Shakespeare. Giving you the idea that the stages may occur in your
life but in the end it really doesn t matter what you have done, because it will most
likely be destroyed. The idea that what you have developed will be demolished
makes you wonder what you are doing and have done with your life.
Imagery is prominent in The Seven Ages of Man and is used to give meaning to a
line or phrase meaning while creating complex images. When Shakespeare
describes the boy as a creeping snail and sighing like a furnace you can image a
drowsy boy who is on his way to school, but when described as having a shining
morning face it gives you a completely different idea. By placing two differential
images close together Shakespeare creates two separate moods in a few lines,
which helps to determine the difference between two phases. Later on in the poem
he uses the same strategy and says the man is bearded like a pard , portraying the
image of a slightly older man who has moved on from the childish phase of the
young schoolboy. He also says he

In March 2003 the Porsche brand faced a challenge without precedent in 55 years.
Since the e launch of the Porsche 356 in 1948, the brand had stood for expensive,
high performance sports cars.
Its designs, varying little over the decades, formed and then came to reflect the
notion of a classic n sports car. It was a connoisseur s racing vehicle, engineered for
speed and maneuverability. But it was also a rebel s car; the car James Dean died in

op yo In 1953, Porsche produced its first racing car, the
550. In 1964 came the iconic 911, also a racing car.
Designed by Ferry s eldest son, the rear engine vehicle became a twentieth century
design landmark. In the 1970s, Porsche and Volkswagen collaborated on launching
the 914. In 1972, Porsche became a joint stock company (Porsche AG) with the
Porsche and PiГ«ch families on the board.
Porsche AG was nearly derailed by the U.S. stock market crash in 1987.
Sales volume collapsed from a peak of 50,000 cars in 1986 to 14,000 in 1993.2 At
the time Ferry Porsche commented: I certainly have not given away my family name
to sell off and cash out the company to the highest offer. This philosophy might hold
true for Americans, but not for us. 3

In 1991, Porsche launched the first of several cars at price points lower than
traditionally associated with the Porsche brand. The 911 RS America was a no
frills version of the long running rear engine 911 model; priced at $54,000, it ran
about $10,000 under traditional Porsche prices. This was followed by the entry

The Intellectual Roots Of Modern Day Environmentalism
Many people today do not understand or appreciate the lasting effects that the
environmental movement of the 1960s brought to our world. The things that most
people immediately associate with the 1960s usually include the Civil Rights
movement, Vietnam, the space race, student protests and the hippie generation,
underscoring the fact that the environmental movement is often put aside relative
these seemingly more iconic symbols of this decade. The 1960s certainly did not
mark the first time that efforts were made in the United States to change attitudes,
policies, and views regarding the environment. Many trace the intellectual roots of
modern day environmentalismall the way back to the 19th century American writers
and philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, most notably
the latter s 1854 work, Walden. President Theodore Roosevelt set aside more
public land for national parks than all of his predecessors combined. His policies
and views about conservation remained dominate for decades (nps.org). The efforts
made by these figures in the mid 1800s through the early part of the 20th century
were crucial for paving the way for what would come in later years. The main reason
for such progress in the environmental movement in the 1960s is because of
influential leaders, the prominent role of media, and a generation of people who were
not afraid to initiate change.
Influential figures in the 1960s were the first ones to bring to light the urgency of the
The Lake Of The Woods
In the Lake of the Woods is about ghosts, personal and national, and about the
impossibility of escaping them. Author Tim O Brien poured much of his own
likeness into protagonist John Wade. Wade grew up in Minnesota and like O
Brien, he served in Vietnam so he could maintain or get more love from his peers
and family. Like O Brien, he likely committed some wartime sins and like O Brien,
he cannot escape the past. However we see a key difference between the two mean
as O Brien confronts his personal demons through writing and admitting publicly his
faults, while Wade prefers to suppress the past and at making all disagreeable
memories disappear.
The pervasive theme of disappearance is perhaps the most important motif of the
novel. Wade, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This viewpoint manifests and grows to be a deep personal identification for Wade
in his adult life. For example in Vietnam, Sorcerer made entire villages vanish with
a few magic words into a walkie talkie and heavy explosives; after the graphic
depictions of the My Lai slaughter Wade even manages to disappear his name from
the official platoon roster. This attitude continues after the war when Sorcerer turns
back into John Wade, where in the United States, Wade uses this magical trickery as
a politician. He continues his manipulation and ambition until he is on the verge of
winning a seat in the United States Senate when memories of the Vietnam secrets he
s buried deep inside his mind surface years later. The discovery and news reports of
his participation in the My Lai slaughter ended up being the root cause of his election
loss.
Through small glimpses O Brien reveals Wade s past to the reader. The novel opens
in its present timeframe (1986) to John and his wife Kathy, who have retreated to the
Lake of the Woods in the northern Minnesota wilderness after the election defeat.
They have been in love since college, where John often spied on her, they try to put
the past beside them and desperately create new possibilities in the future for them,
but a palpable tension and unease run under the easy going surface of their day to
day activities. In
School Dress Code And Anti Dress Codes Essay
Students have been affected by dress codes for many years. Others, for better or
for worse, never had to deal with them. It has been debated for years between
parents, students, and school systems alike as to whether or not dress codes are
appropriate to enforce. This essay will summarize, make an argument, and analyze
Krystal Miller s article on this subject, titled, School Dress Codes . School Dress
Codes is a 1990 article about the issues surrounding various city s experiences with
enforcing a school dress code. In the article, four different high schools in Detroit
are examined, as well as a school in Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles.
Depositions from both pro dress code and anti dress code persons are included.
The opposing end includes Mary Louise Starks, who is in charge of the
psychological services for the Detroit school system and says dress codes are not
the solution to the violence, A dress code is a temporary measure that is limited in
scope. Students are committing these crimes because they don t have a sense of
power and self esteem. They steal from their peers to gain control over another
person (qtd. in Miller 87). An example of a pro dress code student from the article is
17 year old Jonathon Johns, a senior at Dunbar High Schoolin Baltimore, who says,
Violence isn t as bad as it was. There s no way to prove it s all due to the dress code,
but I feel it s had a big impact (qtd. in Miller 87). There are several testimonies and

Shortly after Butler was born, her father died leaving Butler s mother and
grandmother to raise her. Octavia s mother used to read her bedtime stories until
she was six years old. As soon as she got to like the stories, her mother said, Here s
the book. Now you read. She didn t know what she was setting her both up for. Just
at the age of ten Octavia began to write short stories of fiction.
Octavia lived most of her life in Pasadena. All through Junior High and High
School, even college, Butler was a very shy person. She would not get up in front
of class to do anything, her teacher s thought this was because she didn t do the
work and was unprepared. One time, she even went as far as to record her
presentation on a tape and turn that in instead. During her years in school, there were
three teachers who made a critical difference in Butler s development. The first was

Analysis Of To The Lighthouse By Virginia Woolf
Life and Work People s emotions, experiences, and senses from the past and present
influence everything they do; every thought or idea a person has builds from the
foundation of previous thoughts, memories, emotions, and experiences. People
utilize their past to make decisions, teach a lesson, improve relationships, and to
grow and develop their own ideas and opinions. Writers especially draw from past
experiences to weave their own stories and create a new and unique world for their
audience s enrichment and enjoyment. One extraordinary writer that was especially
known for utilizing new techniques in her writing was Virginia Woolf
, an author,
critic, essayist, feminist, and publisher. Although Virginia Woolf s writing was
original and new for her time with the stream of consciousness, many feminist
ideas, and political views, her work developed and formed from previous influences
such as her friends, family, and current events. Virginia Woolf wrote many short
stories and novels in her life and each one was influenced by how she grew up.
Many people may not always consider what influences a novel, or they may imagine
that the novel was merely created for fun, however, most novelists have an inspiration
and Virginia admitted that her family was the largest inspiration for her novel, To the
Lighthouse. The novel was written about a seemingly perfect family who goes to
their vacation home near a lighthouse where the complexity behind each relation is
unveiled. The setting parallels a vacation home the Woolf s had when Virginia was
young and would visit each summer. The mother of the family in the book passes
away toward the beginning of the book, mirroring how Woolf s mother passed
away when she was only thirteen years old. In addition, the family in the novel
also had eight children, similar to Virginia Woolf and her seven siblings. Herbert
Marder who wrote a biography on Virginia found pieces of Virginia in her novels
and within his book reiterates Woolf unveiling her reason for writing To the
Lighthouse, I [Virginia Woolf] use to think of him [father] mother daily, she noted in
her diary. I was obsessed by them both unhealthily; writing of them was a necessary
act (Marder 6). Another critic,
A Day Is A Special Holiday For Those Who ve Lost A Soldier
Memorial Day is a special holiday for those who ve lost a loved one in military
service. For me, the holiday is two fold. Yes, I remember the passing of my military
dad, , but it s also the day I remember all the best things about my father. It s when I
celebrate Father s Day.
My father was always proud to be a soldier. Sure, he would grumble about Army
politics or how the service caused him to have bad knees and feet. Yet. he was good
at being a solider. This was ironic because he did not choose to join the Army on his
own.
He, like many others, was part of the Vietnam draft. My father had no intentions of
being a military man. He was going to go to a local college and play football. That
dream was cut short when he received his draft letter right before graduation
football dreams would have to wait. After the war ended and he satisfied his
minimal service requirements, he did not leave. He re enlisted and went on to
serve 20 years in the Army. He retired before he was 40. It would seem that with a
full military career and generous retirement package under his belt, he would relax
and move on. This was not the case, he had a hard time relaxing into civilian life.
My dad had a rough childhood. He grew up poor in a little town in Eastern
Kentucky with no father figure. Sure, he showed promise and talent in playing
football at the local college, but academics was not on his horizon. Whether he
realized it or not at the time, the Army was not only an escape from his
What Was The Impact Of The First World War On Ireland
Kate Kelly, 13455112.
What effect did the First World War have on the emergence of Australia and Ireland
as independent nation states?
The First World War was a crucial episode in the history of both modern Australia and
modern Ireland. Today, we will look at how both Australia and Ireland each
responded to the outbreak of this war, and at some of the battles in which these
nations fought. We will examine the impact that the First World War had upon both
Australian and Irish society at the time, and their progress towards independent
nationhood. In Australia, we will primarily focus on the political and industrial
turmoil, and in Ireland, we will focus on rebellion and the advance of separatist
nationalism.
In Australia, the outbreak of the war was met with much enthusiasm, best seen in the
response of the Australian Prime Minister ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The post war period saw unprecedented levels of demands for Ireland s agricultural
and industrial produce, as continuing shortages of food and demand for consumer
goods stimulated the market. The volatile and violent political context of the period
caused economic hardship in many rural areas, with restrictions on travel and on
markets imposed by the security forces. More seriously, there was a vicious and
costly policy adopted by the security forces of burning down co operative creameries
in retaliation for attacks on police or troops in nationalist strongholds, with the hope
that economic attacks like these would undermine support for the nationalists.
Additionally, the partition of Ireland between two antagonistic governments separated
the most industrial region of the country from the more agricultural based areas of the
south and west. The War of Independence also caused immense damage to the
economy and transport infrastructure, leaving the costly task of creating stability and
rebuilding. Again, the war had a significantly negative impact on the Irish
The Prioress vs. the Wife of Bath
In Geoffrey Chaucer s, The Canterbury Tales, Chaucer narrates the accounts of
several pilgrims on their way to visit the shrine of St. Thomas Becket at the Cathedral
in Canterbury. Through his narratives, Chaucer presents his audience with a broad
representation of life and social class interaction in both the pilgrims and the
characters in their tales. Chaucer brings to light various ideas, thoughts, and
commentary in regards to medieval society. The two most significant characters who
provide the greatest insight into contemporary medieval society are the Wife of Bath
and the Prioress. Through both the Wife of Bath s Tale and the Prioress s Tale,
Chaucer articulates his opinionated views of the etiquette and conduct of women in

Even though she has left her husbands somehow, she will always be tied to
matrimony. Even though she is not married, she is still referred to as the Wife of
Bath. The Prioress s name Eglantine also can be connected to her natural beauty, as
an Eglantine is a type of rose. Unlike the Wife of Bath, the Prioress has received a
high education from the school of Stratford at the Bow, where she learned to speak
French fluently. The learning of French was seen as being highly cultured, so this
also reaffirms her social status. Though she is very well educated, Chaucer points
out that she may not be the most informed, For Frenssh of Parys was to hire
unknowe. This goes to show that even though she is very well rounded, she lacks
in her knowledge of what goes on perhaps in the world outside of the nunnery.
Chaucer s description of her delicate table manners exemplifies her ladylike
qualities as, She leet no morsel from hir lippes falle, Ne wette hir fyngres in hir
sauce depe; Wel koude she carie a morsel and wel kepe That no drope ne filled

clene That in hir coppe ther was no ferthyng sene Of grece, wan she drunken hadde

etiquette is also an example of her superior education to that of the Wife of Bath and
elevated social standing. While the Wife of

Enders Game Movie Vs Book
For this summer of 2015 I read Enders Game for my summer reading. The author of
this best seller is Orson Scott Card. This book won the 1985 Nebula award for best
novel and the 1986 Hugo award for best novel. This famous novel was made into a
major motion picture and in theaters during 2013. I choose Enders Game because
either I had read every other book on the list or the other books did not interest me.
Also Enders Game was available to me at the time so it was also convenient. Since
the movie of this book seemed to be well known and popular I assumed it would be
an even better book and I was right. Another reason I choose this book is because it
is a fantasy fiction novel and fiction is very intriguing to me. This book was
fascinating for me to read and enjoy.
Enders Game is a military science fiction novel. Set in Earths future, this book is
based on life on Earth and space after two warlike conflicts with an insectoid alien
species, the buggers and Earth. While the people of Earth are preparing for a third

The government prepares these selected children with increasingly difficult games

Zen Buddhism Essay
Zen Buddhism was first introduced to China by a South
Indian man called Bodhidharma in around 520 CE. Bodhidharma, according to
tradition, was a man so epic that he removed his own eyelids in order to win a
staring contest with a rock wall (from his severed eyelids sprang tealeaves, and thus,
the connection between Zen Buddhism and tea drinking). The main teaching of Zen
is that of zazen, or seated meditation, and that only through meditation and action,
rather than cogitation, can one achieve enlightenment (Elwood, 127 132).
There are two main sects of Zen Buddhism: Rinzai and Soto. Rinzai is the older of
the two schools, and was introduced to Japan by Eisai, a Tendai monk who traveled
to China and was disappointed to see that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the new tenzo, or cook, makes a mistake...a senior monk will surely give him a
tongue lashing in front of everyone. The cook will be criticized if the rice is too
hard, the soup is too salty, the vegetables have been cut too small, the tea is
lukewarm, the faucet is left dripping (Hori, 13 14).
Hori goes on to say that if Zen Buddhist masters taught rationally, rather than
intuitively, a new cook would be taken aside for a while in the weeks preceding his
appointment and shown how to cook properly. However, in not being taught the
proper way to prepare meals, and through being forced to constantly be mindful of
his actions and the effects they will have on the reactions of his fellow monks, Zen
is effectively being practiced.
Another thing that Rinzai and Soto have in common is their effort to keep monastic
life simple to the point of being almost primitive. This includes the use of wood fires,
non flushing toilets, no running water, no heating or air conditioning, and often no

An Asset Price Bubble
1. Literature Review. (No project plan)
Over the past decade, the media and the number of well known press constantly
claim that the prices of house in US is realistically the best evidence of the
existence of an asset price bubble in the housing market during the early 2000s.
The first effort here we can look at is a survey by McCarthy and Peach (2004)
which shows that the level of home prices relative to household income and the
level of home prices relative to rent are commonly used to support claims of an
asset price bubble. On the other hand, Holcombe and Powell (2009) listed 3 basic
views as opposed to the existence of house price bubbles : the first one claimed that
the existence of bubbles is expectedly the results of real ... Show more content on

As a result, this decision made homes more affordable which boosted the demand
for houses and levelled up prices of housing. But could American household afford
to pay for their own house all at once? Randall and Benjamin (2009) stated that
approximately 70% of American homes are owned by their own households as for
the majority of them this represents the most of their net worth income. In 1 order to
take ownership of their homes, taking out a loan is the best option to pay for mortgage
.
1.2 Subprime lending and Subprime mortgage.
During house price bubbles , subprime loans were introduced to people with low
ability to pay off their mortgage, especially to households with low income.
Unfortunately, these loans were distributed unevenly across the country (Silje
Pileberg, 2014). His article pointed out that this loan was specifically for borrowers
with low credit scores (FICO scores less than 640, for example). However, the
system seemed not to work fairly just as Pileberg (2014) described. A recent
research by Barth (2009) demonstrated that 31 out of 32 types of available mortgage
products were chosen by prime borrowers from January 1999 through July 2007.
This is because the difference between prime and subprime lending becomes artificial
due to the fact that lender can define on its own which borrowers are subprime. The
subprime lending eventually grew rapidly. Barth (2009) showed that subprime home
mortgage originations went up
Southwest Savanna Environmental Analysis
The Southwest Savanna is characterized by the hilltops, rivers and valleys and steep
wooded slopes within the area. The average growing season in this part of southern
Wisconsin is 153 days, making it the fourth longest growing season of the different
landscapes within the state (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2015). Of
all the land in this section of Wisconsin, about 3.5% belongs to state, county, or
municipal governments; this includes the state parks, natural areas, and wildlife
areas. (Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources 2015). In the past, a majority of
the forests in the Southern Savanna burned frequently. These forests depended on the
fires to help maintain the area and return nutrients to the soil. In the mid 1800s,...

Geologists have said that the deep granites are the roots of the mountains that were
once here more than two billion years ago (Belmont Mound State Park Geology).
The sandstones and limestones, that the mound is composed of, was originally
deposited on top of the granite as the sea bottom of the sea that once covered a
major part southern Wisconsin (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). Since
Belmond Mound is in the Driftless area, the erosion patterns that carved
southwestern Wisconsin are what created the mound. Over the 400 million year
erosion cycle, streams removed the sandstone limestone, and dolomite from the
southern part of Wisconsin (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The remains of
these minerals in this region exist only as tiny remnants on the tops of the Blue,
Platte, Belmont and Sinsinawa mounds. If these mounds were not capped by the
Niagara dolomite in the area, they would have been cut down to the level of the
lands surrounding them (Belmont Mound State Park Geology). The Belmont
Mound is an example of the southern mesic and dry mesic forests in Wisconsin. The
east central part of the woods is more mesic with sugar maple being the dominant
species while larger red oak, basswood, and white ash dominate the remainder, with
some black walnut mixed in (Belmont Mound Woods No. 167). The areas of the
mound that were the focus of the study were the Southern (day one) and Eastern (day

The City Of Philadelphia And Philadelphia s Home Rule...
States also have the authority to delegate their police powers to Municipalities.
Pennsylvania s Constitution, states that a municipality which has a home rule charter
may exercise any power or perform any function not denied by [this Constitution], by
its home rule charter or by the General Assembly at any time . Thus the City of
Philadelphia draws its policepowers from the statein the same way states draw their
power from the Constitution. Section 5 300(a) of Philadelphia s Home Rule Charter
of 1951 provides that the City Department of Public Health shall administer and
enforce statutes, ordinances and regulations relating to public health including those
dealing with the pursuit of occupations affecting the public health .
In Warren v. Philadelphia, the court stated that under its police powers, a state or its
municipalities may enact statutes and ordinances for the welfare and health of its
citizens provided the ordinance is not unreasonable or arbitrary. In that case, the
petitioners argued that police powers rest with the state and that the police power that
the city was attempting to exert had not been properly delegated to the city. In
deciding the case, the court looked to the Home Rule Act of 1949, which stated that
The charter of any city adopted or amended in accordance with this act may provide ...
for the exercise of any and all powers relating to its municipal functions, not
inconsistent with the Constitution of the United States or of this Commonwealth,

Antitrust Laws In The Airline Industry
The role of antitrust laws, established in 1890, in the private sector for all the
different types of businesses was to end price discrimination for customers and
prevent monopoly expansion, and restrict combined market control. The one area of
the regulation vs deregulation era I would like to discuss briefly about is President
Jimmy Carters AirlineDeregulation Act.
As soon as regulations for airline travel was lifted, new competitors emerged and
existing companies scramble to satisfy their market control. With the explosion of
airlines offering a list of new services as well as employing nonunion pilots and
workers to cut costs and expand profit. Many airlines cater a variety of different
social classes from super expensive flights to the cheap no frills flights. The large
airline companies, which had originally got accustomed to the government set fares
and the guaranteed that all costs would be cover, found themselves in disarray satisfy
the services offered by the new competition. Despite that the deregulation was
excellent for competitive airline businesses to offer many services that strategically
cut costs for profit. It affected the customers with pricing, additional fees, and
complicated service options. As of result, many airlines end up purchasing and
merging other airlines to gain market control. The rest of the many airlines businesses
filed for bankruptcies and liquidations.

One of the most important parts of owning any firearm is learning how to operate
it safely and effectively. The NRA hosts many safety and operating courses for
various firearms, and the NRA basic pistol course is one of their most popular
options. One of the reasons for this is because many people want to buy firearms
for personal protection, and pistols are very popular option for self defense due to
their small size and ease of use. Pistols are also a popular option for teaching
teenagers and children about the proper ways to handle firearms since they re

Essay on Measuring Organizational Safety Culture
Measuring Organizational Safety Culture Introduction How does an organization
assess safety culture? Before we tackle that question lets define safety culture.
There are many definitions of safety culture but for the purpose of this discussion
we will define safety culture as a Collective values and norms an organization has
regarding safety , Terry Miller, National Safety Council. Most safety professionals
would agree to adequately assess an organization s safety culture you must first
develop a series of indicators to gauge performance. Those indicators should be a
combination of both lagging and leading. To understand what those indicators are we

One must caution reliance solely on lagging indicators such as injury and illness
data as they are after the fact measurements focusing on past performance. Lagging
indicators may tell you where incidents have occurred in the past but they will not
tell you where incidents are likely to occur in the future. A second safety indicator
often used to gauge organizational safety culture is near miss reporting. Near miss
reporting is categorized as an unplanned event not resulting in an undesirable
consequence, however; having the potential to do so. Recognizing and reporting near
miss incidents can have a positive impact on organizational safety performance. Near
miss reporting not only provides valuable information to prevent future incidents it
also provides an excellent opportunity for employees to actively participate in an
organizations safety system. Near miss reporting also increases communication
between management and hourly personnel creating a culture of teamwork leading
to a safer work environment. Another leading safety indicator often used to gauge
safety culture is behavioral safety observations. An integral component of most
behavioral safety programs the number of field observations and percent of at risk
behavior of a particular target will often be tracked. Safety observation and feedback
can improve safety
Literary Development In Pride And Prejudice By Jane
Austen
Pride and Prejudice
Jane Austen is one of the greatest novelists of English Literature. She was born in
1775 at Steventon in Hampshire, in the south of England. Her father was Reverend
George Austen, who was a well educated clergyman and who encouraged Austen
both in her reading and her writing. She started writing when she was fourteen, and
by her early twenties she was already working on the first versions of some of her
novels. She did not write about great events, like the French Revolution or the
Napoleonic Wars, both of which happened during her lifetime. Such forces were
remote from the restricted world that she depicts. She wrote about what she knew
best: the daily business of social visits, romantic affairs, and matchmaking. Her six
major novels (Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Northanger

Farrel (1917) praised Austen for a most perfect mastery of her weapons, a most
faultless and precise adjustment of means to ends . In my opinion, Austen had a
unique skill at creating characters, which was an important part in her novels.
Especially in Pride and Prejudice, where the plot development is determined by the
characters. It is also important to mention that although human weakness is a
prominent element, ranging from Miss Bingley s jealousy to Elizabeth s blind
prejudices, outright evil is little in evidence. Austen maintains an attitude of good
humored irony toward her characters. The reader finds various forms of irony in
Pride and Prejudice. Sometimes the characters are unconsciously ironic, for
example when Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth serve to directly express Austen s own
ironic opinion. Another example is when Mr. Bennet turns his wit on himself when

Rhetorical Analysis Of Elle Woods
Elle Woods was the typical sorority girl while at CULA she loved shopping; her
friends; and her boyfriend, Warner. With her father s money on her side, Elle never
prioritized her education or working. She assumed her future held a marriage to
Warner and life as a trophy wife; but when Warner declares Elle a hindrance to his
goals of graduating from Harvard University, she becomes determined to do the
same. Realizing no amount of money could buy admission to Harvard, Elle works
valiantly toward her goal and is accepted. As the movie comes to a close, the scene
shifts to three years later with Elle addressing her classmates as she graduates
alongside Warner. Though she does not speak excessively, Elle speaks of the
passion, perseverance, and determination necessary for success. In her short, yet

experience at the University. Since few thought she belonged in law school, her
words illustrate her passion and drive to overcome societal norms and lend more

The Myth Of Sisyphus
The gods had condemned Sisyphus to ceaselessly rolling a rock up to the top of a
mountain, whence the stone would fall back of its own weight. They had thought
with some reason that there is no more dreadful punishment the futile and hopeless
labor today s laborer is destined to a similar fate as detailed in Albert CamusThe Myth
of Sisyphus, and his fate is no less absurd. Finding a Sisyphus in today s society
would be of no difficulty whatsoever as many people have very poor, if no work life

the importance of the concept and the misconception that work life balance is only
important and of value to certain people.

Interestingly enough, because it is so common and usual for the male laborer to
be working long, tiring hours, men that have a hard time balancing work and life
are often times overlooked and ignored. A very well known and highly respected
magazine, by the name of Forbes, writes the following, In organizations, while it is
acceptable for women to demand flexible work or plan their maternity leave, men
seeking similar arrangements or paternity leave is still rare. When it comes to
gender neutral programs, such as job sharing, men experience a higher level

using the arrangements was not a real option. To help better explain, Men, unlike
women, do not have as many options and choices in the workplace. They, whether
they like it or not, have to go out and make sure to earn a living and provide

disadvantages at work. For example, when a woman needs to take days off for the

tries to do the same, all of a sudden, the stereotypical machismo mentality, as can be
found in previously mentioned Anne Slaughter s article, comes in to play. Men, when

The Future For Sport Management
Introduction The future for sport management in Australia appears prosperous. Over
the years, Australia has managed to develop an international reputation for sporting
excellence through its national team performances and the expansion of its sports
systems (Daly, 1991; ASC, 1998; Shilbury Kellett, 2011). The country has managed
to host some of the greatest sporting events, notably the Olympic games, the Rugby
World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, with aspirations to bring the Football (soccer)
World Cup to Australia in 2018 (ASC, 2011). International sporting events of this
scale are capable of generating considerable revenue for its sport industry, as well as
the country s economy (i.e. tourism). The Australian sport industry has become a
multi billion dollar enterprise (ABS, 2013), and the role of sport management has
been intensified as a result of this. Australian Sport Systems Government Systems
The support of government for sport has been increasing over the last thirty years,
and is now on the political agenda of the Australian government (Shilbury Kellett,
2011). As Australian sport and its industry began to grow and develop further and

Institute of Sport (AIS). As a result of this, the Australian Sports Commission (ASC)

entertain and audience. Peter Jackson s 2005 remake took the foundation for King
Kong and expanded upon it in almost every way in order to make again the
amazement of the original for a modern audience. Audiences received the original

time and the movie grossed $90,000 in its opening weekend. In order to bank upon
its success again sequels were made and then in 1976 a remake was made to

While Jackson s remake is true to the original for the most part, there are some
small changes made in order to make the movie more appealing. In the original
King Kong it is the lead actor in the movie that saves the damsel in distress but in
the 2005 remake it is the scriptwriter that saves the female actress. This change is
likely due to the recent trend of heroes coming from unlikely places. Studios know
that if a movie does well the first time, it is likely to do well the second time and
even the third time. King Kong is no exception. Producers can presume that the
glory of the original will pass on to the remake since audiences hope for that
feeling again. Whether the movie is better or not doesn t matter. Audiences will go
to see King Kong over the years because the remakes are associated with the
original. Every King Kong remake is based on the same principles: wanting to
create a movie that will capture audiences and instill in them a sense of wonderment
and awe. The original did this and the remakes try to do it again. Directors,
producers, and studios may change the story, update the actors and technology but
they are essentially just trying to cash in on the success of the original. Take a good

Native Americans
The Museum I chose to go to is The Museum of Natural History, the museum was
great and pretty interesting. The topic that I mainly focused on was the Native
Americans. My main points was to focus on the way they were living, how they
managed to survive and most importantly their traditional cultures. There were many
things I ve seen that I learned in class, such as the ghost dance and how they were
forced out of their land to live in the reservation. There were also many things that we
haven t discussed in class; for exa mple, the weapons that they used, the housing and
other traditional dances.
In class we learned about the ghost dance which indicated hopes for the natives
when they were on the reservations. However, there were many more dances that
gave the native hope for other things; for example: the war dance represented
success in an upcoming war. The natives would celebrate the war dance the night

The thing that I found very interesting was that they had a spear thrower. A spear

hunting. Also, Blowguns and darts were common for hunting during that time.
The main purpose of the museum is to amaze the new generation and to show how
life was like back then. There were many things I was amazed by of how people
survived the passed. Nowadays people can t stand a day without internet, but back
then people stay days without eating and managed to survive. This explains why the

Abstract
America s critical infrastructure encompasses a large number of sectors such as
agriculture, food, water, public health and emergency sectors as well as providing the
essential goods and services Americans need to survive.
Critical Infrastructure
Protecting America s critical infrastructure and key assets is a formidable challenge.
Our technologically complex society creates an infinite amount of potential targets. It
is pretty much impossible to protect all of our assets all of the time.
There are thousands of critical infrastructure assets spread across the country and it is
a monumental task for the DHS to protect them. The USA patriot act defined critical

Risk can be defined as R=f(C, V, T). R stands for the level of risk and helps to
establish priority for a critical infrastructure asset. C stands for the consequences of
an attack on a particular target in terms of general public health. V is an assessment
of the vulnerability of a target. Some targets are more easily attacked than others
(Gaines and Kappeler, 2012). T stands for the likelihood that a target will be attacked.
Once security goals have been established and risk has been assessed the next thing
to do is establish security priorities. This should help planning and coordination
between agencies with the allocation of resources. A larger amount of resources will
be needed for assets with higher risk than the others. Prevention and mitigation efforts
include various processes and security approaches or a combination of measures. This
process will help to provide substantial information relative to securing critical

The Population Of Urban Areas
CHAPTER 1:INTRODUCTION According to census defined homeless as
houseless households. Households which do not live in buildings or census house
but live in the open or roadside, pavement, in Hume pipes, under fly over and
staircase, or in the open in places of worship, man daps, railway platform etc. Are
treated as homeless households. Households living in dilapidated homes or
households without access to basic amenities, infrastructure or services apart from
households with too many members living under a single roof (congestion factor)
should also be termed as homeless. The census has found that between 2001 and
2011 homeless population in urban areas grew by 20.5% but in rural areas it
declined by 28.4%. Census 2011 has presented data on homeless household s size.
Most number of homeless households at the national level comprises single
member households to be followed by 7+ members households. The population of
homeless in urban areas (9.4 lakhs) is more than that in rural areas (8.3 lakhs). In
India Uttar Pradesh (3.3 lakhs), Maharashtra (2.1 lakhs), Rajasthan (1.8 lakhs),
Madhya Pradesh (1.46 lakhs), Andhra Pradesh (1.45 lakhs), Gujarat (1.4 Lakhs) are
highest state for homeless people.(Decline in homeless population: Census data

Hester Prynne Reputation
Hook
How many of you have seen a person publicly shamed or embarrassed? We have all
seen these instances where people have been called out for everyone to see. Hester
Prynne In Nathaniel Hawthorne s The Scarlet Letter, is publically shamed in front
of the whole town and is forced to wear a scarlet A on her chest. All because of her
sin, adultery. This type of shaming can have a huge impact on a person s reputation.
Nathaniel Hawthorne addresses the the theme of reputation, which is defined as
beliefs or opinions that are generally held about something or someone. He addresses
this theme to show the comparisons between the characters lives and how it affected
them all differently. Reputation is something we have all cared about at one time...

their own moral feelings. She was a young girl in a loveless marriage, and her
husband had been presumed dead for nearly two years. However, the harsh Puritan
society refused to take any of these circumstances into account. They saw this
transgression in a very black and white manner. She was married, she had a child
out of wedlock, and she should be punished. Her sin became her legacy, or at least it
became her legacy for some time to the most critical members of the society. They
shunned her and tried to shame her. Living with this reputation, however, awakened

Refusing to simply give up and hide in the midst of the loss of her reputation, she
showed amazing courage. While on the scaffold, she, for a moment was tempted to

Part 1: Exploring an audiovisual case study a) What are Scott and Jean trying to
achieve with the icebreakers?
Scott and Jean s Icebreaker activities serve several different purposes, the first of
which being to encourage the group to come together as a whole and get to know
one another. The initial activity did a fabulous job of encouraging the youngsters to
introduce themselves to their peers in a fun and non intimidating way. It broke the
ice (LGBT YouthScotland clips 2 6). If the introductions had been done with a greater

Informal education is totally different to the type of education that takes place within
schools. Youngpeople are not taught the objectives defined by a teacher as they
would be in a classroom, they are encouraged to work things out for themselves as
an active learner. An educator s role in informal education is to create situations in
which young people can identify their own goals for learning (Mackinnon, 2013
p13). In this instance (LGBT activity) the students were placed in small groups and
given the agenda i.e. where they would like Peer Education to be in two months
time. From this they worked together to discuss and identify the skills and barriers
involved in peer education. However they did not sit in a group around a table as
you would expect to find with group activities taking place in a school, instead they
grouped using the furniture and floor space around the room in an informal manner
and discussed issues within their group rather than being directed by Scott or Jean
whose input was merely to work around the groups asking relevant questions to
encourage independent thinking therefore the practitioner becomes a facilitator of
opportunities in which young people can work collaboratively on projects or
activities ( Mackinnon, 2013 p13) . Once the groups had discussed their ideas they
relayed what they had learnt as one large group, sometimes sharing personal
experiences which showed how confident and at ease they
The State Of Nature In Thomas Hobbes s Leviathan
In Thomas Hobbes Leviathan, the state of nature is described as a state of war.
Hobbes says that the lack of a common, sovereign power causes a state of war. In
order to understand the argument that Hobbes makes, I will define commonwealth,
natural man, state of nature and law of nature. These terms are crucial to understand
the complex argument that Hobbes lays out calling the state of nature a, war of
every man against every man, (Somerville 142). In this paper I will discuss Hobbes
argument in detail.
The key terms throughout this complex argument that Hobbes uses, are important to
understand, to fully comprehend the point that Hobbes wants to come across in
Leviathan . When referring to the commonwealth, Hobbes wants the reader to
understand, that this is a body of people that submit to a sovereignty to rule over them
completely. This complete compliance with their new governmentis meant to uphold
peace and order in their society. A natural man, in Hobbes argument, means a man, or
woman, in the state of nature. The state of nature, according to Hobbes , is the
natural state of humankind that would exist if there were no government. Along with
having no government, there is no civilization and no law to control human nature.
The law of nature is what gives every person the right to self preservation. These
terms greatly contribute to the structure and meaning behind Thomas Hobbes
argument that the state of nature is a state of war. Thomas Hobbes starts out

Nazi Ideas In Adolf Hitler s Necessary Evil
Hitler had the ideas to commit horrible things, but how did he convince the public to
help him do those things? We need to understand this to prevent things like it from

African Indigenous Religions Essay
Introduction
African traditional religions were the first recorded religions to grace the plains
and coasts of Southern Africa and possibly even the world. The earliest group of
people living in Southern Africa has been named the San people. It was thought
that San etchings and implements found in caves dated back to between 10 000 and
20 000 years ago (Deacon, 1999). However in 2008 the oldest art to date was found in
a cave in Still Bay in Cape Town, called the Blombos cave. It was named by
Christopher Henshilwood and dates back to 77,000 years (Wits, 2014). This rock art
is the earliest depiction of religious experience and belief.

The San are polytheistic. They believe in one supreme god, who lives in the
Eastern sky and one lesser god who lives in the western sky (UNISA, 2010:138).
They believe that this supreme god had instituted at world order, thus working the

called Kaggen who offers wisdom, plays tricks and plays tricks. He is believed to
come in many different guises, from an Eland (the most revered animal for the San),
to a snake or a bird, but he could also live as a San man. Traditionally a boy had to
kill an Eland before he could be considered a man.
The San had many phenomenological beliefs; they believed that their faith and
offerings through song and dance could affect the will of the gods. They often
performed Trance dances to bring rain and depicted these experiences by painting
them on cave walls (Deacon, 1999).

Politics (past/present)
In 1961 Janio da Silva Quadros became President. He believed that Brazil had to
trade with all nations and worked to increase trade with communist countries such
as Cuba. Pres. Joao Goulart succeeded him after seven months, when military
leaders feared that Silva would open the doors for a communist take over. In 1964
troops forced Goulart out of office and Gen. Castel Branco took over. Branco was
given many powers by the military including the right to suspend the rights of
citizens and he was succeeded by three other Generals until 1978. During the late
1960 s and early 1970s Brazil s economy flourished after the military banned political
as well as trade union activities (Brazil Government).

Essay about Macklemore Otherside Analysis
Otherside Macklemore We live on the cusp of death thinking that it won t be us,
(l.32). Macklemore is saying that people think that they will not die from doing
drugs. In this song Macklemore is stating that drugs can be really addictive also he
states that drugs can really mess you up and how media influences you to do drugs,
for example rappers like Lil Waynewhich he talks about in this song and Wiz Kalifa.
Strong poetic devices permeate throughout Macklemore s song Otherside for
example he uses allusions, repetition and end rhyme. An example of a poetic device
that Macklemore uses in this song is allusion. One allusion Macklemore uses is
Groundhog Daylife repeat each time (l.59). Macklemore mentions the movie

He is also saying to keep him on this high of making his music instead of using
drugs to get high. Macklemore uses repetition in his songs to help emphasize what
he is talking about. One other poetic device that Macklemore uses in his song is
end rhyme. One form of end rhyme in his song would be, there s no way to glorify
this pavement/ syrup, Percocet, hit an eight a day will leave you broke depressed
and emotionally vacant, (ll.45 46). The rhyme in this line would be pavement and
vacant which is also a forced rhyme. He also states that if you become addicted to
drugs you can go broke, go into a type of depression and become emotionally
vacant in other words destroy you. Another use of end rhyme in this song would
be, surprise, you know the drill/ trapped in a box, to climb record sales/ follow the
formula violence, drugs and sex sells/ so we try to sound like someone else (ll.40
43). In this line the words that would rhyme would be sales, sells, and else.
Macklemore is also stating the fakeness of today s rappers who tend to rap about
drugs and things they haven t done when they should be rapping about their lives and
struggles they have been through. Macklemore uses end rhyme to tie in certain lines
that should be read together. Media can really affect how someone thinks or looks at
drugs and Macklemore helps explain this trough this song by using allusions,
repetitions, and end rhyme. This also applies to my life by
Aesop s Fables
Introduction:
I chose to research the genre of fables, specifically Aesop s fables. I only informed
of the basics of fables. To be frank with you I don t even think there is much to
know about fables. What is there to know? They contain lessons, animals, and they
are short. From time to time people use them in their quotidian day to back up their
opinions. Especially authority figures like parents, teachers, and, well I can just
think of those two. Personally I believe that Don t let things for the last minute is
their favorite one. Why haven t you done your homework? ... oh wait, that does not
apply to fables. Well in summation my knowledge on fables is very superficial.
The reason for me selecting fables is because they have an ... Show more content on

No joke, I love her. The whole process was a bit irritating but a fun experience.
Find:
What I love most about fables is that each one of them comes with a moral, the
positive or negative interpretation of a story that always leaves a life lesson. The
reaction generated from a fable s moral depends on the individuals knowledge
about life; each person will interpret a moral differently because each one has lived
a different life. Fables are also carried on from generation to generation and have a
purpose that is to entertain. These short stories are made up with animals or
inanimate objects representing humans. Fables are used as a teaching tool for young
children and even for adults. According to some scholars Aesopcould have been
African American because of his many references to animals. ( Aesop
Encyclopedia of World Biography, par 2). There are many hypotheses on what or
who Aesop could have been. There was also a rumor that he was a slave and got
free because of his extraordinary story telling abilities ( Aesop Encyclopedia of
World Biography, par 5). A fable is simply a synonym of allegory. Over the years
fables have maintained their position as a helpful tool to many teachers around the
world to help students. Fables continue to be very appealing to the public. They soon
begun to disperse around the world and started being translated in many languages.
Considering my age, one of the fables that we, teenagers, have to keep in
Perseverance Analysis
I reviewed my feedback for my essay on perseverance. I noticed that I had some
strengths and some weaknesses. One strength that I had was providing a good
thesis statement. The thesis statement is crucial in creating a paper that is explicit
as well as understandable. A weak argument can create a poor paper whereas a
strong thesis creates a sturdy paper. I write a rough draft and then write several
different variations to improve my argument. The second strength I had was the use
of a compound adjective. A compound adjective is an adjective that is made up of
two or more words. I use compound adjectives to improve my overall structure of my
writing. Sometimes I fail to incorporate them but the more I practice, the better I will

Explroing the Social Groups to Which Reformation Appealed in Sixteenth Century
Germany
During the early Sixteenth Century the church was the most powerful constitution in
the world. So, how was its power reduced so dramatically in the space of one century
and where did support for the reformation lie?
The question of which social groups the reformation appealed to can be answered by
addressing which sectors of society supported Martin Luther, The Father of
Protestantism. The aspects which need to be considered are how Catholicism
influenced the daily lives of towns and cities and what difference the introduction of a
new religion produced, how Martin Luther managed to openly speak out ... Show

So, Luther penned against the murderous, pillaging hordes of peasants and by May
1925 state leaders had raised and army to defeat the rebels.
The peasant revolt played a very important part in the reformation and had massive
consequences. Luther, an educated man knew he could not be associated to rebels
and would need friends in higher places in order to escape excommunication. By
turning his back to the peasants he showed to the princes that Luther could be trusted
with regards to issues such as social stability, he showed those in power he was on the
right side. His condemnation of the peasantry also appealed to the middle class due to
his representation of social stability, they too were fearful for their property. Although
the enormous peasantry turned away from Lutheranism and instead became part of
the Anabaptist Movement, this in turn helped the reformation succeed, as it gave
Luther a chance to attract the small majority of nobles and bourgeoisie.
It has now been established that Luther desperately wanted the reformation to appeal
to nobility and the majority of nobles did support the reformation however, the only
side they were on, was their own.
King Charles definitely remained Catholic and dedicated to the papacy. This is
evident throughout
Should There Be Stricter Gun Control Laws In The United...
Guns or No Guns
INTRODUCTION:
The role guns play in our society has long been debated on whether or not citizens
have the right to own guns. There are those who believe that guns have no role in the
hands of private citizens. Whereas there are those who believe that guns are the very
foundation that protects our rights and liberties expressed in the Constitution. The
debate is over whether or not there should be stricter laws preventing people to own
guns. Though gun control and gun rights advocates share similar views on
background checks and requirements, each have different views on the safety of guns
and the Second Amendment meaning.
Safety: CONTRAST
Both sides of gun control advocates believe that the safety of American citizens is the
most important thing within the argument of the ban of guns, but they both have
different views on how it should be handled.
No Guns:
Some people believe that the United States is safer when citizens are not allowed
access to guns. The amount of organized crime would go down because all of their
power is derived from their use of firearms and that is a significant amount of their
profit. Gun control laws protect children and families; Moms Demand Action, a
grassroots group founded in response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary
School, believes guns in America are creating a public health crisis that is attacking
children, citing statistics ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The second amendment clearly gives Americans the right to bear arms which led to
the founding of our country ( The Constitution of the United States, Amendment 2).
Gun advocates believe the new legislation will separate them from their rights
because putting laws on their firearms will be against Amendment II. The right to
bear arms for self defense is protected in all states as well as the U.S. Constitution.

  • 3. The First Meditation By Rene Descartes Topic: How does Descartes argue that mind and body are distinct? Is he right? Am I real, or imaginary? In the First Meditation, Rene Descartes presents the main falsehoods in which he believed during his life, and the subsequent faultiness he experienced concerning the body of knowledge. The philosopher considers that it is never too late to rethink the knowledge about his personal being from the very foundations, and builds his thoughts on a certain ground starting from common things. It would be impossible to doubt each thing separately, so he expresses his doubt to the basic principles of knowledge he has already gained, since a conclusion would surely be doubted if its premise was doubted. He starts by doubting basic senses, by comparing feels in reality vs. in dreams. For example, even if I consciously feel warm when I am walking in the sun, I could not claim that I am hundred В‐percentage sure I am awake, since I would feel it the same way when I was in dreams. Descartes presents this idea to show the doubt of reality and its elements. Also, he concludes that the common things we perceive are fashioned, and knowledge based on that can be doubted, such as physics and astronomy. This category of knowledge are different from geometry and arithmetic, which contain certain and definiteness in the simplest thing. By doubting the sense and knowledge based on it, Descartes argued his approach that the body and mindare two absolutely distinctive things. Descartes mentions God

  • 6. The Importance of Literary Devices in The Seven Ages of... All the world s a stage the men and women merely players . This line is the beginning of the The Seven Ages of Man and is a recurring question throughout the poem. You may wonder how the world is stage, and through his use of similes, metaphors, and imagery Shakespeare explains this elaborates on this question. William Shakespeare s use of similes in the Seven Ages of Man helps to start the poem and give it a meaning early on by adding emphasis on certain topics. For example in the beginning he uses the men and women merely players (Line 2) to explain that people don t own the world but live in it. By using this simile he explains how people progress through life like a play, making an entrance to the stage and leaving afterwards. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore Shakespeare compares The Last Age to childishness and oblivion meaning that after you have gone through all the stages everything you have built up demolishes and you start back at the first stage. The last line of the poem helps you to determine how the play ends and because this comparison is made it makes you aware of people in your life that have gone through a few of the stages described by Shakespeare. Giving you the idea that the stages may occur in your life but in the end it really doesn t matter what you have done, because it will most likely be destroyed. The idea that what you have developed will be demolished makes you wonder what you are doing and have done with your life. Imagery is prominent in The Seven Ages of Man and is used to give meaning to a line or phrase meaning while creating complex images. When Shakespeare describes the boy as a creeping snail and sighing like a furnace you can image a drowsy boy who is on his way to school, but when described as having a shining morning face it gives you a completely different idea. By placing two differential images close together Shakespeare creates two separate moods in a few lines, which helps to determine the difference between two phases. Later on in the poem he uses the same strategy and says the man is bearded like a pard , portraying the image of a slightly older man who has moved on from the childish phase of the young schoolboy. He also says he

  • 9. The Intellectual Roots Of Modern Day Environmentalism Many people today do not understand or appreciate the lasting effects that the environmental movement of the 1960s brought to our world. The things that most people immediately associate with the 1960s usually include the Civil Rights movement, Vietnam, the space race, student protests and the hippie generation, underscoring the fact that the environmental movement is often put aside relative these seemingly more iconic symbols of this decade. The 1960s certainly did not mark the first time that efforts were made in the United States to change attitudes, policies, and views regarding the environment. Many trace the intellectual roots of modern day environmentalismall the way back to the 19th century American writers and philosophers Ralph Waldo Emerson and Henry David Thoreau, most notably the latter s 1854 work, Walden. President Theodore Roosevelt set aside more public land for national parks than all of his predecessors combined. His policies and views about conservation remained dominate for decades (nps.org). The efforts made by these figures in the mid 1800s through the early part of the 20th century were crucial for paving the way for what would come in later years. The main reason for such progress in the environmental movement in the 1960s is because of influential leaders, the prominent role of media, and a generation of people who were not afraid to initiate change. Influential figures in the 1960s were the first ones to bring to light the urgency of the

This attitude continues after the war when Sorcerer turns back into John Wade, where in the United States, Wade uses this magical trickery as a politician. He continues his manipulation and ambition until he is on the verge of winning a seat in the United States Senate when memories of the Vietnam secrets he s buried deep inside his mind surface years later. The discovery and news reports of his participation in the My Lai slaughter ended up being the root cause of his election loss. Through small glimpses O Brien reveals Wade s past to the reader. The novel opens in its present timeframe (1986) to John and his wife Kathy, who have retreated to the Lake of the Woods in the northern Minnesota wilderness after the election defeat. They have been in love since college, where John often spied on her, they try to put the past beside them and desperately create new possibilities in the future for them, but a palpable tension and unease run under the easy going surface of their day to day activities. It has been debated for years between parents, students, and school systems alike as to whether or not dress codes are appropriate to enforce. This essay will summarize, make an argument, and analyze Krystal Miller s article on this subject, titled, School Dress Codes . School Dress Codes is a 1990 article about the issues surrounding various city s experiences with enforcing a school dress code. In the article, four different high schools in Detroit are examined, as well as a school in Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles. Depositions from both pro dress code and anti dress code persons are included. The opposing end includes Mary Louise Starks, who is in charge of the psychological services for the Detroit school system and says dress codes are not the solution to the violence, A dress code is a temporary measure that is limited in scope. Students are committing these crimes because they don t have a sense of power and self esteem. They steal from their peers to gain control over another person (qtd. in Miller 87). An example of a pro dress code student from the article is 17 year old Jonathon Johns, a senior at Dunbar High Schoolin Baltimore, who says, Violence isn t as bad as it was. There s no way to prove it s all due to the dress code, but I feel it s had a big impact (qtd. in Miller 87). There are several testimonies and

  • 14. Analysis Of To The Lighthouse By Virginia Woolf Life and Work People s emotions, experiences, and senses from the past and present influence everything they do; every thought or idea a person has builds from the foundation of previous thoughts, memories, emotions, and experiences. People utilize their past to make decisions, teach a lesson, improve relationships, and to grow and develop their own ideas and opinions. Writers especially draw from past experiences to weave their own stories and create a new and unique world for their audience s enrichment and enjoyment. One extraordinary writer that was especially known for utilizing new techniques in her writing was Virginia Woolf , an author, critic, essayist, feminist, and publisher. Although Virginia Woolf s writing was original and new for her time with the stream of consciousness, many feminist ideas, and political views, her work developed and formed from previous influences such as her friends, family, and current events. Virginia Woolf wrote many short stories and novels in her life and each one was influenced by how she grew up. Many people may not always consider what influences a novel, or they may imagine that the novel was merely created for fun, however, most novelists have an inspiration and Virginia admitted that her family was the largest inspiration for her novel, To the Lighthouse. The novel was written about a seemingly perfect family who goes to their vacation home near a lighthouse where the complexity behind each relation is unveiled. The setting parallels a vacation home the Woolf s had when Virginia was young and would visit each summer. The mother of the family in the book passes away toward the beginning of the book, mirroring how Woolf s mother passed away when she was only thirteen years old. In addition, the family in the novel also had eight children, similar to Virginia Woolf and her seven siblings. Herbert Marder who wrote a biography on Virginia found pieces of Virginia in her novels and within his book reiterates Woolf unveiling her reason for writing To the Lighthouse, I [Virginia Woolf] use to think of him [father] mother daily, she noted in her diary. I was obsessed by them both unhealthily; writing of them was a necessary act (Marder 6). Another critic,

Yes, I remember the passing of my military dad, , but it s also the day I remember all the best things about my father. It s when I celebrate Father s Day. My father was always proud to be a soldier. Sure, he would grumble about Army politics or how the service caused him to have bad knees and feet. Yet. he was good at being a solider. This was ironic because he did not choose to join the Army on his own. He, like many others, was part of the Vietnam draft. My father had no intentions of being a military man. He was going to go to a local college and play football. That dream was cut short when he received his draft letter right before graduation football dreams would have to wait. After the war ended and he satisfied his minimal service requirements, he did not leave. He re enlisted and went on to serve 20 years in the Army. He retired before he was 40. It would seem that with a full military career and generous retirement package under his belt, he would relax and move on. This was not the case, he had a hard time relaxing into civilian life. My dad had a rough childhood. He grew up poor in a little town in Eastern Kentucky with no father figure. More seriously, there was a vicious and costly policy adopted by the security forces of burning down co operative creameries in retaliation for attacks on police or troops in nationalist strongholds, with the hope that economic attacks like these would undermine support for the nationalists. Additionally, the partition of Ireland between two antagonistic governments separated the most industrial region of the country from the more agricultural based areas of the south and west. The War of Independence also caused immense damage to the economy and transport infrastructure, leaving the costly task of creating stability and rebuilding. Bodhidharma, according to tradition, was a man so epic that he removed his own eyelids in order to win a staring contest with a rock wall (from his severed eyelids sprang tealeaves, and thus, the connection between Zen Buddhism and tea drinking). The main teaching of Zen is that of zazen, or seated meditation, and that only through meditation and action, rather than cogitation, can one achieve enlightenment (Elwood, 127 132). There are two main sects of Zen Buddhism: Rinzai and Soto. The cook will be criticized if the rice is too hard, the soup is too salty, the vegetables have been cut too small, the tea is lukewarm, the faucet is left dripping (Hori, 13 14). Hori goes on to say that if Zen Buddhist masters taught rationally, rather than intuitively, a new cook would be taken aside for a while in the weeks preceding his appointment and shown how to cook properly. However, in not being taught the proper way to prepare meals, and through being forced to constantly be mindful of his actions and the effects they will have on the reactions of his fellow monks, Zen is effectively being practiced. Another thing that Rinzai and Soto have in common is their effort to keep monastic life simple to the point of being almost primitive. This includes the use of wood fires, non flushing toilets, no running water, no heating or air conditioning, and often no electricity. (Hori, 14) By not allowing the use of modern, time saving innovations, Zen Buddhist monks are forced to spend much more time focused on simple, day to day activities, again improving the general state of awareness that Zen Buddhism seems to be all about. Along the same lines, monasteries have strict, often harsh, rules dictating many mundane aspects of everyday life. As we saw in the movie,

A recent research by Barth (2009) demonstrated that 31 out of 32 types of available mortgage products were chosen by prime borrowers from January 1999 through July 2007. This is because the difference between prime and subprime lending becomes artificial due to the fact that lender can define on its own which borrowers are subprime. She was born in 1775 at Steventon in Hampshire, in the south of England. Her father was Reverend George Austen, who was a well educated clergyman and who encouraged Austen both in her reading and her writing. She started writing when she was fourteen, and by her early twenties she was already working on the first versions of some of her novels. Farrel (1917) praised Austen for a most perfect mastery of her weapons, a most faultless and precise adjustment of means to ends . In my opinion, Austen had a unique skill at creating characters, which was an important part in her novels. Especially in Pride and Prejudice, where the plot development is determined by the characters. It is also important to mention that although human weakness is a prominent element, ranging from Miss Bingley s jealousy to Elizabeth s blind prejudices, outright evil is little in evidence. Austen maintains an attitude of good humored irony toward her characters. The reader finds various forms of irony in Pride and Prejudice. Sometimes the characters are unconsciously ironic, for example when Mr. Bennet and Elizabeth serve to directly express Austen s own ironic opinion. Another example is when Mr. Bennet turns his wit on himself when Lydia run away with Wickham let me once in my life feel how much I have been to blame. Over the years, Australia has managed to develop an international reputation for sporting excellence through its national team performances and the expansion of its sports systems (Daly, 1991; ASC, 1998; Shilbury Kellett, 2011). The country has managed to host some of the greatest sporting events, notably the Olympic games, the Rugby World Cup, the Cricket World Cup, with aspirations to bring the Football (soccer) World Cup to Australia in 2018 (ASC, 2011). International sporting events of this scale are capable of generating considerable revenue for its sport industry, as well as the country s economy (i.e. tourism). The Australian sport industry has become a multi billion dollar enterprise (ABS, 2013), and the role of sport management has been intensified as a result of this. Australian Sport Systems Government Systems The support of government for sport has been increasing over the last thirty years, and is now on the political agenda of the Australian government (Shilbury Kellett, 2011). As Australian sport and its industry began to grow and develop further and further, sport programs were introduced in the sport system, notably the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS). In the original King Kong it is the lead actor in the movie that saves the damsel in distress but in the 2005 remake it is the scriptwriter that saves the female actress. This change is likely due to the recent trend of heroes coming from unlikely places. Studios know that if a movie does well the first time, it is likely to do well the second time and even the third time. King Kong is no exception. Producers can presume that the glory of the original will pass on to the remake since audiences hope for that feeling again. Whether the movie is better or not doesn t matter. Audiences will go to see King Kong over the years because the remakes are associated with the original. Every King Kong remake is based on the same principles: wanting to create a movie that will capture audiences and instill in them a sense of wonderment and awe. Most readers can empathize with Hester, despite their own moral feelings. She was a young girl in a loveless marriage, and her husband had been presumed dead for nearly two years. However, the harsh Puritan society refused to take any of these circumstances into account. They saw this transgression in a very black and white manner. She was married, she had a child out of wedlock, and she should be punished. Her sin became her legacy, or at least it became her legacy for some time to the most critical members of the society. They shunned her and tried to shame her. Living with this reputation, however, awakened in Hester Prynne a quality she probably did not realize existed unbelievable strength. These terms are crucial to understand the complex argument that Hobbes lays out calling the state of nature a, war of every man against every man, (Somerville 142). In this paper I will discuss Hobbes argument in detail. The key terms throughout this complex argument that Hobbes uses, are important to understand, to fully comprehend the point that Hobbes wants to come across in Leviathan . When referring to the commonwealth, Hobbes wants the reader to understand, that this is a body of people that submit to a sovereignty to rule over them completely. This complete compliance with their new governmentis meant to uphold peace and order in their society. A natural man, in Hobbes argument, means a man, or woman, in the state of nature. The state of nature, according to Hobbes , is the natural state of humankind that would exist if there were no government. Along with having no government, there is no civilization and no law to control human nature. The law of nature is what gives every person the right to self preservation. These terms greatly contribute to the structure and meaning behind Thomas Hobbes argument that the state of nature is a state of war. Thomas Hobbes starts out

The reaction generated from a fable s moral depends on the individuals knowledge about life; each person will interpret a moral differently because each one has lived a different life. Fables are also carried on from generation to generation and have a purpose that is to entertain. These short stories are made up with animals or inanimate objects representing humans. Fables are used as a teaching tool for young children and even for adults. According to some scholars Aesopcould have been African American because of his many references to animals. There was also a rumor that he was a slave and got free because of his extraordinary story telling abilities ( Aesop Encyclopedia of World Biography, par 5). A fable is simply a synonym of allegory. One strength that I had was providing a good thesis statement. The thesis statement is crucial in creating a paper that is explicit as well as understandable. The peasant revolt played a very important part in the reformation and had massive consequences. Luther, an educated man knew he could not be associated to rebels and would need friends in higher places in order to escape excommunication. By turning his back to the peasants he showed to the princes that Luther could be trusted with regards to issues such as social stability, he showed those in power he was on the right side. His condemnation of the peasantry also appealed to the middle class due to his representation of social stability, they too were fearful for their property. Although the enormous peasantry turned away from Lutheranism and instead became part of the Anabaptist Movement, this in turn helped the reformation succeed, as it gave Luther a chance to attract the small majority of nobles and bourgeoisie. It has now been established that Luther desperately wanted the reformation to appeal to nobility and the majority of nobles did support the reformation however, the only side they were on, was their own.
