Security of the Political and Social Position of the...
Security of the Political and Social Position of the Nobility in Early Modern Europe
The nobility of early modern Europe were descended on the whole from the mounted knights of
medieval armies who had been granted land along with social and political privileges and had
subsequently formed a higher social class. Between 1500 1789 the status of the aristocracy came
under threat both politically and socially. The rise of absolutism within the monarchies of Europe led
to the desire of governments to reduce noble power and bypass several of their privileges in order to
increase state revenue and centralise governmental control. The growth of the middle classes and the
destruction of the feudal system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Thirdly the nobility experienced a crisis of identity and a loss of purpose as their status decreased and
there was a general relaxation of reverence [3].
The exercise of arms had been an intrinsic element in proving a noble s worth but after 1500 letters
were often disassociated from arms and proved a far more certain road to wealth and nobility that the
life of the warrior [4] and an education became as important as military prowess had been previously.
This is another example of the nobility being forced to adapt to the social pressures of the period. As
the middle classes grew they forced the nobility to change its outlook and modernise to keep up with
the rest of society or become diminished and backwards. Educational standards also enabled the
nobles to be judged by the universal standards of achievement rather than birth [5]. This demonstrates
the changing attitudes of the lower classes as they began to require justification of the nobility s high
status.
The nobility s high social position was confirmed by their privileges, which firmly distinguished noble
from commoner [6]. These included fiscal advantages, such as being exempt from taxation, judicial
privileges, their exclusion from menial work within state service, their political

The Edict Of Hamurabi And The Code Of The Salian Franks
Civilization has continued to exist and grow because of the many institutions that exist within most
individual cultures, such as art, religion, ethics, etc. I believe that the most important factor in the
development of civilization and the biggest aid to the success of past societies is law. Law exists in
every society that we have seen throughout this semester, whether it be from the earliest examples of
written law like in The Code of Hamurabi, or in the most recent example we have seen in The Code of
the Salian Franks. I will seek to analyze the examples of important laws that we have seen throughout
developing society, and how they were integral to the growth of the civilization they were created in,
including: The Code of Hamurabi, The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Enacted in 313 A. D. by Constantine Augustus, this law was made and established to prevent the
persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, and was a huge step forwards for society for a number
of reasons. Firstly, the law was a very early example of tolerance and acceptance of religious
practices. This law was put in place to bring peace, but more so than just peace it helped set a
precedent for future civil issues and how they could be solved. among other things which we saw
would be for the good of many, those regulations pertaining to the reverence of the Divinity ought
certainly to be made first, so that we might grant to the Christians and others full authority to observe
that religion which each preferred; whence any Divinity whatsoever in the seat of the heavens may be
propitious and kindly disposed to us and all who are placed under our rule (Edict of Milan, Page 1)
The second, and arguably most important advancement this law promoted was a turning point for the
development of civilization through the vast growth of Christians following the edict. While the
Roman Empire had once been a Polytheistic worshipping society, once Christians were granted the
right to free worship, we see a very large shift in the number of Christians compared to other forms of
religion within the empire. However, not only were Christians the majority in Rome, they quickly
became the dominating religion in the world, and because they became the biggest and most
influential religion in the world, their choices in early history are ingrained in our own society today.
We typically measure time in history by suffixing years with either BC or AD, which stand for Before
Christ and anno domini ; The latter being Latin for The year of our Lord . So through this law, we see
civilization not only getting its first taste of civil liberties, but also inadvertently affecting the way in
which we

The Divorce And Its Effects On The Institution And...
Today, we live in a society where till death to us apart has changed to till
things fall apart . Divorce, which is a legal discontinuation of the marriage, has rapidly
grown to approximately 40 percent of all marriages will end in the United States. While
they re many couples that are in happy and healthy relationships, there are several those
are not. What is the cause of the progressing down in the institution and commitment?
The desire to stay in a relationship no matter what happens, in marriage and developing
romantic relationships? Researchers are explaining that answer is very simple....
Communication. Communication scholar Mark Knapp and social psychologist and
martial therapist John Gottam have turned to studying couples through all stages of their
relationship, whether they are in happy or unhappy relationships, to find the solution and
explanation to communication characteristic traits that many couples have developed
while dating that have or will carry over into a possible marriage. In this case study, I will
be focusing on two examples of how romantic relationships vary in how they handle
conflict, through looking at Validating couples and Hostile couples.

Prison Incarceration Programs
The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology is one of the five pillars of the criminal justice system.
It is also known as the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor). On January 2,1991 the Bureau of Jail
Management and Penology was created pursuant to section 60 to 65, chapter 5 of republic act no.
6975 as a line bureau under the department of interior and local government (DILG). The main
purpose of the Bureau of Corrections is to rehabilitate the criminal offenders. They are also tasked to
give the reformation programs to the inmates, such as educational and livelihood programs. This
agency also aim in helping the individuals not to commit another crime after release. According to,
Andrews and Bonta (2010) states that incarceration and community sanctions are thought to serve
justice and deter crime . It means that rehabilitating the criminal offenders will help a lot in deterring
crimes and serving justice.
Rehabilitation will greatly help the criminal offenders in improving themselves. But there are still

The Bathroom Ordinance
I never doubted that equal rights was the right direction. Most reforms, most problems are
complicated. But to me there is nothing complicated about ordinary equality. Alice Paul (Alice Paul
Quote) Due to recent events unfolding all across the nation many efforts have been made to push for
more equality. From movements like Gay Rights and #blacklivesmatter down to equal rights for
people in the workforce America is truly pushing for the rights to encompass all. On specific
movement here in the city of Houston has taken big steps to show the world that Houston does not
tolerate discrimination and to remind residents that Houstonians take action to counter those who

In recent polls conducted by TV stations here in Houston it was shown that supporters of the
ordinance [have] a slight lead, but each poll indicated that about one fifth of likely voters were
undecided (Lozano). Sally Field, an Oscar winning actress, supports H.E.R.O on the bases that this is
very personal to her because her mother and grandmother were both born here in Houston, and she s
the mother of a gay son (Karedes). Although many are for the act, on the other side of the ballpark
opponents contend the ordinance would infringe on their religious beliefs against homosexuality
(Lozano). Taking the view points on H.E.R.O from two gay friends shows both viewpoints on the
ordinance. One, Sydney, stated that they were okay with the act and that [the] country was founded on
equality (Hinojosa). The other, Amanda, is fearful that there is a potential that their friends might get
hurt if people misuse the equality of the bathrooms (Hinojosa) and is focused more on just one aspect
of the ordinance. Regardless of both viewpoints on H.E.R.O the effects of the act will only come to
light for here in Houston after it receives its final judgment when it hit the polls Nov. 3rd of this

2. Danger
Usage of line powered device could be dangerous. As leakage of AC current (i.e. 60 hertz) in the body
if it is of sufficient amplitude and duration it can cause motor nerves depolarization thus induce
involuntary tetanic like muscle contraction. As in most of the humans muscle contraction frequencies
are 40 and 60 hertz.
3. Battery powered devices
Leaking of current from a battery powered device is not dangerous. They are safe because there is
continuous 0 hertz DC current regardless of its amplitude and duration. This low voltage current
cannot be able to cause nerve depolarization and thus couldn t induce titanic muscle contraction.
D. Physiological damage
When a 60 hertz AC current of 5 mA passes through a body it may cause unwanted physiological
changes such as tissue burn and tetanic muscle contraction which may cause severe body injuries
including death.
1. Tetanic muscle contraction
The victom may showed minor to vigrous tetanic muscle contractions which may cause respiratory
arrest or cardiac arrest and it leads to death by electric shock.
2. Tissue burn
When 60 hertz AC current passed through a body it cause burn injuries primarily at skin surface and
secondarily in deeper tissues because skin tissues offer more resistance to current than the deeper
tissues. Deeper tissue burn injuries are stronger if the skin is in

William Blake Poet
William Blake is one of the most renowned poets in the history of English literature. Born to the
owners of a hosiery shop on Broad Street in the center of London in 1757, William Blake developed
into a toddler of extraordinary imagination. While only a young boy (around the age of four), he spoke
to his parents of seeing angels playing amongst him, encountering visions of heaven and hell
throughout London and the nearby countryside, and spotting God keeping a close eye on him during
tasks and chores. It was not long before the young Blake began to stencil out the visions from his
imagination, and as an eleven year old, he enlisted in Pars Drawing School to learn the art of printing
and plaster casting. Soon thereafter, Blake began to apprentice under London artist James Basire, and
as a fourteen year old, he was assigned to drawing monuments in Westminster Abbey, which led to a
lifelong admiration for Gothic art and religious illustration. While working with Basire, Blake
befriended contemporary apprentice James Parker. Parker and Blake would later become partners in a
jointly owned print shop on Broad Street, right next door to the Blake hosiery shop and household, a
partnership that only lasted one year (1784 85). One must recall the historical context of Blake s
development from a young artist to a poet in his mid twenties. In 1775, America began a revolution of
independence from England, igniting tense controversy in London, and the young artist witnessed an

The Sistine Chapel Choir
Since the late 1400s, the Sistine Chapel Choir has consisted of 24 male singers. These singers are split
into four different parts soprano, alto, tenor and bass with 6 singers in for each part. The soprano and
alto would consist of the upper range and tenor and bass would be the lower range. The high voices
consist of men that could sing in the falsetto range or men who unfortunately was snipped in order to
keep their voices in that range. Those men were later replaced by boys in the 1800s but the choir still
remains all males.
In a Catholic church, they believed that singing music it was best to be unaccompanied so it can be
sung from the heart to the ear of God without any interference. So there would be no musical

What I found interesting about this was how the other students saw me as a role model and was able to
come to me for help asking me about sports and how to improve their fitness, whether it was
basketball, football or just training in the gym. I learnt how to inspire, because of what I was able to
achieve just by helping and mentoring others. Science and sports has always kept me engaged in my
educational life as well as my social life; playing basketball at a local community centre and taking
part in event such as football tournaments indoor and outdoor. The skills gained from these experience
has helped me in my own life such as taking charge, decision making, being organised and being able
to adapt to change in situations. Attending different sports tournaments helped me improve in different
areas of sports as well as dealing with different type of competitions and challenges. During my
secondary school education I formed a team and competed in an indoor football tournament against
other team within Birmingham. It was challenging but I kept the team together and we managed to
come second in the tournament, which then lead to us competing with other team across the country.
Many skills and experiences were gained during this time and also my attitude and behaviour towards
my goals changed; I became stronger, more positive and more determined so that I wouldn t give up in

A Story Of Romantic Love Or Courtly Love
Marie: Tell me, is yours a story of romantic love or courtly love?
Francesca: Mine is a story of romantic love; of passion and lustfulness.
Marie: Go on, please.
Francesca: I had been married to Gianciotto, an old and deformed man. As time went on, I began to
fall for Gianciotto s younger brother, Paolo. One day, Paolo and I sat reading from a book when we
came across a rather intense romantic scene. We got caught up in the heat of the moment, and ended
up kissing.
Marie: And then?
Francesca: My husband quickly discovered the affair, and killed my lover and I. We were swept away
by the passion of the moment.

Francesca: You are correct, however why should love be rule governed?

love.
Francesca: That is fair enough I suppose, whoever I still maintain that there must be a better way to
deal with improper love.
Marie: Are you familiar with Bisclavret?
Francesca: Perhaps? The story of the baron who becomes a werewolf and his wife who took his
clothes and another lover?
Marie: Yes. Do you remember the punishment that the baron gave his wife for her lustfulness and
deceit?
Francesca: I do not, please remind me.
Marie: He tore off her nose. Do you see this to be a more proper crime?
Francesca: No, of course not.
Marie: Then please, tell me what you feel would be the proper punishment?
Francesca: The punishment for lustfulness shall be conducted in the depths of the inferno.
Marie: And in this world?
Francesca: In this world? I know not.

Similarities Between Gang And Gang
Comparing the terrorists to gang members. The gang does exactly do what terrorists do. They despair
and recruiting vulnerable young men, and control their communities through brutal violence. We don t
call them terrorists because they don t have a specific vendetta against America as a whole. So, they
can always be classified as terrorists. The unlawful use of violence against people or property to
intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of
the political or social objective. Anybody who has grown up in a neighborhood knows that gang
members use force or violence against people or property to intimidate or coerce the civilian
population. Gang banging can be compared to terrorism. Some people believe that the two activities
have common goals and results. These groups turn to violence to obtain what they need. The
following research will explore this premise, as well as point out where the two groups differ.
Sometimes the government will try every means possible to obtain the release of hostages without
making concessions. It is a widely held belief that making concessions to terrorists that will encourage
more terrorism. Sometimes terrorists will feel that their actions have obtained results. The United
States tries to learn about the goals and ideologies of terrorists, it does so only to better identify and
apprehend them. Educators search for ways to keep students from joining gangs. Terrorism is a well

Controversial Pardon of Richard Nixon
HIST102
American History Since 1877

22 February 2014
Former President Richard Nixon is most well known for his role in the Watergate crisis in the early
1970 s. The Watergate crisis started in June of 1972, when the Democratic National Committee (DNC)
headquarters was broke into by members of Nixon s re election committee. The press took this
breaking news and began to dig deeper into what the Whitehouse (President Nixon) was hiding. Over
the next two years heavy investigations into the Watergate incident revealed that President Nixon did,
in fact, ordered a cover up to keep the incident under control. Fearing impeachment, President Nixon
resigned his presidency in August 1974, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Unfortunately, the controversy did not stop with whether or not the pardon was constitutional.
Political arguments were by far more compelling than the constitutional arguments. Politically, Ford
knew there would be loss in public standing, relations with Congress, and the Republican Party s
fortunes in the 1974 elections. 12 However, he also realized that because of media publicity Nixon
would not receive a fair trial. This is where the controversy begins. People, such as Firmage and
Mangrum, argued that the law must be applied to all persons equally and no one, not even a public
official be permitted to violate the laws with impunity. 13 What they failed to realize were the extreme
circumstances in which Nixon fell under surrounding Watergate. As a former president Nixon was one
of the most powerful figures in the world; the amount of bad publicity he received would not allow for
a fair trial. Special Prosecutor Jaworski was a firm believer that this type of publicity would make
innocent until proven guilty null and void if Nixon were to go to trial.14 Ford s choice to pardon
Nixon prior to a trial was a well thought out plan of action given the circumstances.

The process for registering to vote may sound complicated since not everybody is devoted to politics.
However, registering to vote is actually not as complicated as it seems. Many people do not realize
that registering to vote brings more benefits such as to serve jury in a court and to elect the

to be in a rush to board their flights. We waited for about half an hour and then boarded our next

would be the longest 8 hours of my entire life. After what felt like ages, we had finally reached Maui. I

Although Foucault believes that people are not the authors of society, discourses are governed
independently of anyone s purpose (Learning Companion 2), the institutions he mentions help to keep
order in society, although he is concerned about who can claim the authority of who has the power to
rule how others should behave (Foucault cited by Silva, 2009, p319). When looking at Buchanans
report I have found his findings to be similar to Foucaults in the way that they believe that rules have
to be in place to have social order in society; Buchanan was commissioned to do his report by the UK
government in 1961 which was Traffic in Towns aimed at finding solutions for urban space to
accommodate pedestrians and cars. He found that social order was linked to the segregation of
humans and motor vehicles and the need to create an array of measures in urban design for the
regulation of the conduct of drivers and pedestrians, this vision is in contrast to Mondermans thesis of
a shared approach. Buchanans model assumes individuals should conform to rules and a state that
solves problems and looks after individual behaviour by having rules in place to help control
situations (Buchanan cited by Silva, 2009, p341). When comparing the differences and similarities of

Body. Alcohol Is Surprisingly The Largest Consumed Drug
Body Alcohol is surprisingly the largest consumed drug when it comes to the United States, and with
that comes a higher addiction rate than those drugs deemed illegal such as heroin or even marijuana
still (Thio, Taylor, Schwartz, 2013). Due to this epidemic that is rarely discussed in the same
categorization of illegal substances, there is a bit of a justification seen that alcohol use is not as
severe. Yet data shows that is not the case, because alcohol abuse leads in terms of arrests and related
deaths (Schmalleger, 2013). In 2008, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated
that alcohol caused 11,773 traffic fatalities in one year alone (Schmalleger, 2013). Alcohol also leads

The National Survey on Drug Use and Health or (NSDUH), is an annual publication funded by the

data (Schmalleger, 2013). The (NSDUH) found that there are an estimated 22.6 million Americans
who are current users aged twelve and older (Schmalleger, 2013). Of those 22.6 million Americans,
17.5 million of them were estimated to be using marijuana, and data shows the rates for those most
likely to consume drugs to be between the ages of sixteen to twenty five in 2010 (Schmalleger, 2013).
Another statistic, this time from the class text found that nine percent of the U.S population age 12 or
older use illicit drugs every year, half of them at least once a month. (Thio et al., 2013). The class text
also corroborates this data, citing that of young adults those aged eighteen to twenty five have the
highest rates, for teenagers the rates highest for use are twelve to seventeen (Thio et al., 2013). One
study found that employment status is highly correlated with rates of illicit drug use as well. One
figure showed that an estimated seventeen percent and a half percent of those unemployed were
current illicit drug users (Schmalleger, 2013). Worrying figures due to the gravity of the situation

c. The synodic month is longer than the sidereal month. This is because the Earth is orbiting the Sun
while the Moon goes through its phases. (Slater)
19. What is the difference between the umbra and the penumbra of a shadow? (Page 22)
a. The umbra is the darkest part of a shadow whereas the penumbra is the portion of a shadow in
which only a part of the light source is covered . (Slater)
20. Why doesn t a lunar eclipse occur at every full moon and a solar eclipse at every new moon? (Page

a. An eclipse requires that (in the case of Lunar and Solar one) the Moon, Sun, and Earth align
perfectly. However, the Earth and the Moon do not share the same orbital plane which causes eclipse
to be infrequent.

The Current Public Education System
Better Schooling
The current public education system claims to have the student s best interest as a top priority, but in
reality, it is actually harming the students. Almost all are short changed the way education is set up
now. Boys and girls learn in different ways. They are not different merely because of how they are
treated in society, but because of how their brains function. However, when teachers try to teach
different genders at the same time, the majority of the time, it just will not work. Badly needed are
teachers that understand the differences between, and how to teach, boys and girls. Coed schools hurt
more than they help, not allowing children to reach their potential. Single sex schooling is more
beneficial to the student s learning.
Many claim that by separating young girls and boys, gender stereotypes are being enforced. In 2013,
UCLA put together findings of pros and cons to single sex education. Among the downsides, a
common fear was that this undermines gender equality. The thought is, because girls and boys are in
different schools, this means one can t do what the other can. Generally, this means girls can t be as
competitive, or independent, and boys can t be as caring, or artistic. These stereotypes are in the
current society, men holding higher paying jobs, and women being mothers or teachers, the more
nurturing jobs. But, today s men and women who fall into this common stereotype have grown up to
become how they are through coeducation. A new

A Study On Preparing Titanium Metal Matrix Composites With...
I. INTRODUCTION Many engineering applications in the field of aerospace engineering,
automobiles, electronic equipment etc. require very light material with good mechanical properties.
Titanium based metal matrix composites with carbon nanotube reinforcement can be a solution for
such applications. It can satisfy the requirement of light weight with very good strength. This study
focuses on preparing titanium metal matrix composites with CNT reinforcements for various
compositions for its mechanical properties. Ti alloys have been widely used as structural materials in
aeronautical industries due to their attractive comprehensive properties, such as low density, high
strength, ductility, toughness and resistance to fatigue. Observations on the MA behaviour of CNT Ti
powder mixtures in this study showed that addition of CNTs alters the grinding behaviour of Ti
powders, which typically agglomerates in ball milling, and that the MA process itself is also affected
by the type of CNTs incorporated. While all types of the CNTs, namely SWCNTs, DWCNTs, and
MWCNTs, functioned as grinding aid preventing agglomeration of Ti particles, only the MWCNTs
seem to have uniformly embedded into the Ti particles whereas SWCNTs and DWCNTs were
supposedly not dispersed fully within the matrix. These variations in MA behavior, dependent on the
types of CNTs, are ascribed to the morphological characteristics of each CNT type such as overall
shape, number of carbon walls, and diameter, and specific

Jurassic Park Genetic Modification
Genetic modification is studied in order to gain a better understanding of humans and the pursuit of
knowledge. This is done in hope to make connections between genetics and everyday life. Movies
represent this concept in differing ways and with varying levels of truth, as can be seen in the coming
paper. The films Jurassic Park and Gattaca both have their own takes on what genetic modification
looks like, so their basis of genetic modification will be put under scrutiny and compared with the
reality of today and the future.
In the movie Jurassic Park, several assumptions are made about genetic modification, some of which
are close to reality and others that are far away from it. The premise of the movie is that dinosaurs
were able to be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Much as Jurassic Park is based in soft sci fi, so is Gattaca. Gattaca has a strong focus on the negative
aspects of genetic modification. The story makes some serious assumptions about the impact of these
changes, but first it should be looked at just how practical this is to society. The portrait of genetics in
the movie is significantly more advanced than what is available today. Since the movie was released,
the human genome has been mapped out, but there is a large gap between having the standard genetics
of a human and being able to change a baby s purity almost instantaneously.
The ability to splice genes successfully also have some serious shortcomings currently. In 2015,
Group SEA became the first group to genetically modify human embryos. They attempted to edit the
genetics of the embryos in order to cure their disease, a fatal blood disorder. In their experiments, only
71 of the 89 embryos survived and only 28 successfully accepted the genetics, with not all of them
being accepted in the correct places (ResearchSEA). This shows just how far off humanity is from
having the power to edit human genetics to the point shown in the film. This research was done on
non viable embryos, as to not create an ethical

Arranged Marriage Sociology
When comparing many sociological perspectives and theories against the idea of arranged marriages
in India there are many conclusions that can be drawn. In specific, feminism, functionalism, and the
conflict theory all point out very interesting facts. Some of these theories do a much better job in terms
of accounting for this phenomena; which is not surprising as we looks at the long and detailed history
of the subject. However, there is no sole theory that can truly be linked to account for the total
occurrence of such a subject. As you will see, there are many factors that come into play when an
arranged marriage takes place. Not only are the couple being married affected, but the families of both
the man and the woman are traditionally ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This theory is focused on the inequalities of different groups in a society, and on the level of power
associated to these groups (Mooney, 2000). In the case of arranged marriages in India, there can be
said to be many groups that both contribute and are created with unequal power through the process.
To begin with, the parents potentially hold the future of their child in their hands as they are the ones
who choose the significant other (Sandhya, 2013). In the interest of wealth, power and security, most
families choose a person with a significant amount of higher status in the society because through the
marriage, ties between the families strengthen and so do both of their overall prestige (Sandhya,
2013). It can be said that families marry into one another, and this creates economic inequalities as
these groups are formed. This idea of marriage being a family affair all starts with people who hold
more power than others, the parents versus the child, and end by creating an even larger group that
differs from many other others in that country (Sandhya, 2013). Overall, I believe that the conflict
theory can be said to best describe the idea of arranged marriages because of the nature that
encompasses the

Steroids in Baseball The game of Baseball is an American pastime. During the late 19th century and
early 20th century it was the most widely played sport in the country. Baseball back then was what
video games and televisions is to us now. Throughout the years baseball has changed in some good
ways and in some bad ways. The integrity of the game has been changed in a bad way by steroids.
Steroids is what makes the game today so much different than it was back then. Of course steroids
have been a controversy in this game for a long time but not to the extent it is right now in the late 90s
, and 2000s. The punishments that they give right now for steroid use is ... Show more content on

Not only are these players, who use steroids and get caught , not able to play the game they love, but
will lose out on a lot of money that they could be making during the games that they miss. Alex
Rodriguez is a great example of financial punishment for steroid use. The suspension would be the
longest non lifetime ban in Major league history and would cost Mr. Rodriguez more than 31 million
in loss salary (Costa,Brian). The MLB has announced that it is going to enhance its testing policy and
its punishments for using steroids or any other performance enhancing drugs. The enhanced testing
procedure will include a lot more random in season tests. The number of urine tests will more than
double. In the enhanced punishments there are at most three violations. A first time violation at the
joint drug program will now result in an unpaid 80 game suspension, increased from 50 games.
(Calcaterra,Craig). The second violation will result in an unpaid 162 game suspension rather than a
100 game. The third and final violation will result in a permanent suspension from baseball. Players
want a fair and clean game, that is why they pushed for better testing and a lot more testing. The MLB
commissioner, Bud Selig, was very pleased when the players pushed for stricter policies. Baseball has
had its fair share of scandals. For example, baseballs first commissioner, Kennesaw Landis, was
brought on to deal with the Black Sox scandal.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Group Therapy
Reichenberg, 2014). This text speaks to the fact that other groups could be based on the idea of
racism, oppression or discrimination (Earlet, 2000). This means that the facilitator must be willing to
bracket (Seligman Reichenberg, 2014) his own values and be willing to understand the position of the
group members.
Moreover, due to the nature of the therapy being in a form of a group, the facilitator is required to
develop, alongside the members, group norms and boundaries (Schachter, n.d.). This is important as it
will serve as a way of maintaining order and respect within the group itself (Schachter, n.d.).
Furthermore, the facilitator is required to convey some level of care for the group as well as use this as
an opportunity to model ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, should a group facilitator follow the order above, it is also essential to mention that the
stages do not necessarily persist for a long time and at times, facilitators cannot tell when they ve

8.1. Advantages of Group Therapy.
8.1.1. Diversity of Opinions.
Group therapy allows different individuals to come together and share their thoughts, feelings and
ideas (Occupy Theory, 2014). Through this interaction group members are able to eliminate negative
feelings and experience a sense of relief after sharing their experiences and opinions (Occupy Theory,
2014).
8.1.2. Establishing Comaraderie and Social Support.
Another advantage of group therapy is that it is empowering and encourages individuals to meet other
people and establish comradeship (Occupy Theory, 2014). In terms of social support, group therapy
allows an individual to have a well diversified and strong support structure from other group members
(occupy Theory, 2014). Depending on the number of times in which the group meets each member
will have built a strong social support at the end of each session. 8.1.3. Group

The Naegleria Fowleri Amoeba
Introduction
The Naegleria fowleri amoeba resides in lakes, rivers, thermal springs, dirty swimming pool and
sometimes soil. The amoebas thrive during the summer months due to the increase of
temperature(Shakoor, Beg, and Mahmood 258). Naegleria amoeba infects and targets brain tissue of
the central nervous system and the neuromuscular system. The central nervous system is responsible
for integrating and responding to neural signals. The nervous system and muscles in the body work
together to permit movement called the neuromuscular system. The brain is the main control for
integrating sensory neurons and coordinating body functions: voluntary and involuntary. When needed
to move a body part, a message is sent to the afferent sensory neurons, which go through the brain and
into the spinal cord where the efferent motor neurons send an electrical signal to trigger the muscle to
contract. Errors such as sliding of the actin and myosin filaments or failure to release
neurotransmitters from the neuron can happen. The infection causes primary amebic
meningoencephalitis (PAM) (Shakoor, Beg, and Mahmood 258).. It cannot be contracted by person to
person, or by drinking contaminated water. The amoeba enters the body via nose by infected water
and/or dust and penetrates the cribriform plate(Shenoy, Wilson, and Prashanth [Page 309]). It travels
to the brain by the nerves that transmit olfactory senses and causes PAM. It causes brain tissue damage
and inflammation of the brain. The

to end up differently than you expect. The fall of 2010 I would be heading back to Steamboat just as I
did the two previous years with the same plan and savings. All though this particular winter was not
cooperating as the previous seasons had. Everybody knows that betting on the weather is never a good
idea and this particular year I had made the wrong bet. The locals kept reassuring me that this was the

that an El Niña winter likes to show up to the party late. For me that meant my budget calculations
would be off, while I had a job lined up at my previous place of employment it would not begin until
the ski mountain was open. This meant I had to find a job and fast, I took the bus down to the local

Since culture and preferences differ from countries to countries, Tesco may invest a lot to adapt to
local consumption concept. For example, before entering China, Tesco may spend a lot to adjust to
peoples preferences in there, which are absolutely different from that in Britain. Even people in
different provinces have different habits.
Every time Tesco expands there business to a new region, a great deal of money would be paid for
tuition , which will have impacts on its cash flow and competitive strength.

When referring to the current external environmental conditions of Tesco, it is the global financial
crisis. However, Tesco regards the crisis as its opportunities.
According to the Economist (May 14, 2009), Tesco makes it a chance to push further into financial
services. Since Tesco already has lots of customers experiencing the stores, their costs of acquiring
customers are low. Also the brand is trusted.
People who have witnessed the way in which retailers cooperate with banks in joint ventures
constantly note how much more focused grocers are on the consumers demands.
Retailers think first about the customer, banks about the profit, says an executive. In March Tesco
announced an ambitious expansion of its banking activities.

environment bad. Here is a piece of news. Evans and Loncraine

Sociolinguistic Status Of The Seri Language
Sociolinguistic Status of the Seri Language ROUGH DRAFT
1.0 Introduction
Seri is an indigenous language spoken by less than 1,000 people on the west coast of Sonora, Mexico
(Lewis, Simons, Fennig 2016). The language is generally considered to be an isolate despite former
attempts to include it in the proposed Hokan language family or link it to the now extinct Salinian
language (Campbell, 1997; Marlett, 2007; Marlett, 2008; Marlett, 2011). SIL International has had a
presence within the Seri community since 1951 when Edward and Mary Beck Moser moved to Sonora
to study the nearly unrecorded language ( Edward W. Moser , n.d.). Seri is classified as Vulnerable by
UNESCO (Moseley, 2010) and this paper will argue that historical trauma ... Show more content on

The same year, local hacienda owner and rancher Pascual Encinas drove his cattle into Seri land and
tried to train the Seri to work for him (Sheridan, 2000, p. 112). When this failed, his well armed men
attacked the Seri who were armed only with handcrafted weapons. By 1855, the Seri population had
dropped to a mere 500 (Bowen Moser, 1996). While much has already been lost including the 6 band
structure of the Seri people, cultural knowledge, and at least 2 extinct dialects (Bowen and Moser,
1996; Moser, 1963; Marlett, 2014) much still stands to be lost. The Seri population reached a low of
approximately 200 speakers in the 1950s (Gordon, 2005) and, while population size is not an inherent
signifier of language wellbeing, the small number of speakers puts Seri on a cultural and linguistic
precipice due to the concurrent threat of colonization. The following sections will explore the ongoing
pressures which further jeopardize the sociolinguistic status of the language.
3.0 Economic Wave The Seri are known among local populations for their extended refusal to submit
to colonization. Their fierce opposition to Spanish and, later, Mexican attempts to exterminate or
assimilate their population gained them notoriety as the Savage Seris of Sonora (David and Dawson,
1945). Because of this impressive resistance, the Seri are currently experiencing delayed effects of the
economic wave as described by Nettle and Romaine (2000).

Essay on The Commander
To what extent is the Commander presented as both villain and a figure of sympathy?
The commander can be seen as a man torn between two worlds, he was one of the founders of Gilead
yet still enjoys and yearns for the pleasures of the old society he managed to break. The commander is
cool and collected on the surface but underneath he is bitter and corrupted for the world he has
managed to create. The commander secretly longs for the world to be as it once was and this is why he
savours his time with Offred because she may remind him of life before Gilead. It is also ironic how
both characters feel under the surface an anger and repression of Gilead and they both want to break
free. However on the surface when they play scrabble with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This could represent the villainous side to him, as his power and authority create a shield, which hides
his true self. This means Offred and the reader are not completely sure of who he is and his wants.
Throughout this chapter the theme of having or gaining more power is very evident. The fact that the
commander does have so much power and Offred has so little makes him more villainous. This is
because we can evidently see how Offred could be so easily manipulated by this very powerful man.
However we see a more villainous side to The Commander when he asks Offred to play scrabble with
him. He manipulates Offred into having almost a false relationship with him because this is non
existent with his wife, Serena Joy. The relationship between the commander and Serena Joy is very
numb, cold and formal. They are very alike in character and so they control each other. Their
relationship is somewhat business like and lifeless. In one chapter Serena Joy says to Offred He s my
Husband till death do us part and this sentence feels almost forced. As the reader we feel she says this
because of the last handmaid and because of the jealousy she feels towards Offred. She wants to take
it away before she can even have it. This relationship with Serena Joy puts things out of balance and
Offred and in a way wants to go back to normality. He is unhappy about the situation in Gilead and
wants to forget about the present and live in the past. He

What Is The Spiritual Path Essay
I have walked the spiritual path for 30 years, and I have been studying various spiritual teachings. I
have also been involved with several organizations and spiritual teachers. I have friends who have
been involved with more teachers, and I ve watched hundreds of people have been struggling with a
spiritual path. Based on my experience and observation, I have come to one conclusion is clear. The
difference between those who succeed on the spiritual path and those who continue to struggle with
the frustration is how they view the concept of teachers.
Push button mentality If you take a step back and see the big picture, the essence of the spiritual path
(or life, really) is to come out of ignorance and into understanding, out of the darkness and into terang
in mind, that is. There is an old adage that states, if people knew better, they would do better. I believe

Why do people feel frustrated As well programmed our customers, we choose products that look
attractive to us and eagerly began to consume it. But after a while usually a short time we started to
feel like someone who has flipped the switch, but the light has not come. So we keep on flipping the
switch on and off, and while we could hear the click, the light will not come. This is usually when we
start to feel frustrated, and we may even take it out on the teacher or teaching that does not seem to
work.
I personally have felt this frustration and I have seen in many others. It is quite understandable,
especially when one considers that so many teachers or organizations who make promises they can not
deliver. They have also been caught up in a consumer s approach to spiritual growth, and they have
either consciously or intentionally decided to tell people what they want to hear. So what do we do?
Well, some people give up there and never tried again. Yet most of us do not give up

  • 2. Security of the Political and Social Position of the... Security of the Political and Social Position of the Nobility in Early Modern Europe The nobility of early modern Europe were descended on the whole from the mounted knights of medieval armies who had been granted land along with social and political privileges and had subsequently formed a higher social class. Between 1500 1789 the status of the aristocracy came under threat both politically and socially. The rise of absolutism within the monarchies of Europe led to the desire of governments to reduce noble power and bypass several of their privileges in order to increase state revenue and centralise governmental control. The growth of the middle classes and the destruction of the feudal system ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Thirdly the nobility experienced a crisis of identity and a loss of purpose as their status decreased and there was a general relaxation of reverence [3]. The exercise of arms had been an intrinsic element in proving a noble s worth but after 1500 letters were often disassociated from arms and proved a far more certain road to wealth and nobility that the life of the warrior [4] and an education became as important as military prowess had been previously. This is another example of the nobility being forced to adapt to the social pressures of the period. As the middle classes grew they forced the nobility to change its outlook and modernise to keep up with the rest of society or become diminished and backwards. Educational standards also enabled the nobles to be judged by the universal standards of achievement rather than birth [5]. This demonstrates the changing attitudes of the lower classes as they began to require justification of the nobility s high status. The nobility s high social position was confirmed by their privileges, which firmly distinguished noble from commoner [6]. These included fiscal advantages, such as being exempt from taxation, judicial privileges, their exclusion from menial work within state service, their political ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. The Edict Of Hamurabi And The Code Of The Salian Franks Civilization has continued to exist and grow because of the many institutions that exist within most individual cultures, such as art, religion, ethics, etc. I believe that the most important factor in the development of civilization and the biggest aid to the success of past societies is law. Law exists in every society that we have seen throughout this semester, whether it be from the earliest examples of written law like in The Code of Hamurabi, or in the most recent example we have seen in The Code of the Salian Franks. I will seek to analyze the examples of important laws that we have seen throughout developing society, and how they were integral to the growth of the civilization they were created in, including: The Code of Hamurabi, The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Enacted in 313 A. D. by Constantine Augustus, this law was made and established to prevent the persecution of Christians in the Roman Empire, and was a huge step forwards for society for a number of reasons. Firstly, the law was a very early example of tolerance and acceptance of religious practices. This law was put in place to bring peace, but more so than just peace it helped set a precedent for future civil issues and how they could be solved. among other things which we saw would be for the good of many, those regulations pertaining to the reverence of the Divinity ought certainly to be made first, so that we might grant to the Christians and others full authority to observe that religion which each preferred; whence any Divinity whatsoever in the seat of the heavens may be propitious and kindly disposed to us and all who are placed under our rule (Edict of Milan, Page 1) The second, and arguably most important advancement this law promoted was a turning point for the development of civilization through the vast growth of Christians following the edict. While the Roman Empire had once been a Polytheistic worshipping society, once Christians were granted the right to free worship, we see a very large shift in the number of Christians compared to other forms of religion within the empire. However, not only were Christians the majority in Rome, they quickly became the dominating religion in the world, and because they became the biggest and most influential religion in the world, their choices in early history are ingrained in our own society today. We typically measure time in history by suffixing years with either BC or AD, which stand for Before Christ and anno domini ; The latter being Latin for The year of our Lord . So through this law, we see civilization not only getting its first taste of civil liberties, but also inadvertently affecting the way in which we ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. The Divorce And Its Effects On The Institution And... Today, we live in a society where till death to us apart has changed to till things fall apart . Divorce, which is a legal discontinuation of the marriage, has rapidly grown to approximately 40 percent of all marriages will end in the United States. While they re many couples that are in happy and healthy relationships, there are several those are not. What is the cause of the progressing down in the institution and commitment? The desire to stay in a relationship no matter what happens, in marriage and developing romantic relationships? Researchers are explaining that answer is very simple.... Communication. Communication scholar Mark Knapp and social psychologist and martial therapist John Gottam have turned to studying couples through all stages of their relationship, whether they are in happy or unhappy relationships, to find the solution and explanation to communication characteristic traits that many couples have developed while dating that have or will carry over into a possible marriage. In this case study, I will be focusing on two examples of how romantic relationships vary in how they handle conflict, through looking at Validating couples and Hostile couples. On January 2,1991 the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology was created pursuant to section 60 to 65, chapter 5 of republic act no. 6975 as a line bureau under the department of interior and local government (DILG). The main purpose of the Bureau of Corrections is to rehabilitate the criminal offenders. They are also tasked to give the reformation programs to the inmates, such as educational and livelihood programs. This agency also aim in helping the individuals not to commit another crime after release. • 7. The Bathroom Ordinance I never doubted that equal rights was the right direction. Most reforms, most problems are complicated. But to me there is nothing complicated about ordinary equality. Alice Paul (Alice Paul Quote) Due to recent events unfolding all across the nation many efforts have been made to push for more equality. From movements like Gay Rights and #blacklivesmatter down to equal rights for people in the workforce America is truly pushing for the rights to encompass all. On specific movement here in the city of Houston has taken big steps to show the world that Houston does not tolerate discrimination and to remind residents that Houstonians take action to counter those who would perpetuate discrimination, racism, fear, and hate (Hamilton). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In recent polls conducted by TV stations here in Houston it was shown that supporters of the ordinance [have] a slight lead, but each poll indicated that about one fifth of likely voters were undecided (Lozano). Sally Field, an Oscar winning actress, supports H.E.R.O on the bases that this is very personal to her because her mother and grandmother were both born here in Houston, and she s the mother of a gay son (Karedes). Although many are for the act, on the other side of the ballpark opponents contend the ordinance would infringe on their religious beliefs against homosexuality (Lozano). Taking the view points on H.E.R.O from two gay friends shows both viewpoints on the ordinance. One, Sydney, stated that they were okay with the act and that [the] country was founded on equality (Hinojosa). The other, Amanda, is fearful that there is a potential that their friends might get hurt if people misuse the equality of the bathrooms (Hinojosa) and is focused more on just one aspect of the ordinance. Regardless of both viewpoints on H.E.R.O the effects of the act will only come to light for here in Houston after it receives its final judgment when it hit the polls Nov. 3rd of this ... • 10. William Blake Poet William Blake is one of the most renowned poets in the history of English literature. Born to the owners of a hosiery shop on Broad Street in the center of London in 1757, William Blake developed into a toddler of extraordinary imagination. While only a young boy (around the age of four), he spoke to his parents of seeing angels playing amongst him, encountering visions of heaven and hell throughout London and the nearby countryside, and spotting God keeping a close eye on him during tasks and chores. It was not long before the young Blake began to stencil out the visions from his imagination, and as an eleven year old, he enlisted in Pars Drawing School to learn the art of printing and plaster casting. Soon thereafter, Blake began to apprentice under London artist James Basire, and as a fourteen year old, he was assigned to drawing monuments in Westminster Abbey, which led to a lifelong admiration for Gothic art and religious illustration. While working with Basire, Blake befriended contemporary apprentice James Parker. Parker and Blake would later become partners in a jointly owned print shop on Broad Street, right next door to the Blake hosiery shop and household, a partnership that only lasted one year (1784 85). One must recall the historical context of Blake s development from a young artist to a poet in his mid twenties. In 1775, America began a revolution of independence from England, igniting tense controversy in London, and the young artist witnessed an angry ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Watergate crisis started in June of 1972, when the Democratic National Committee (DNC) headquarters was broke into by members of Nixon s re election committee. The press took this breaking news and began to dig deeper into what the Whitehouse (President Nixon) was hiding. This is where the controversy begins. People, such as Firmage and Mangrum, argued that the law must be applied to all persons equally and no one, not even a public official be permitted to violate the laws with impunity. 13 What they failed to realize were the extreme circumstances in which Nixon fell under surrounding Watergate. Although Foucault believes that people are not the authors of society, discourses are governed independently of anyone s purpose (Learning Companion 2), the institutions he mentions help to keep order in society, although he is concerned about who can claim the authority of who has the power to rule how others should behave (Foucault cited by Silva, 2009, p319). When looking at Buchanans report I have found his findings to be similar to Foucaults in the way that they believe that rules have to be in place to have social order in society; Buchanan was commissioned to do his report by the UK government in 1961 which was Traffic in Towns aimed at finding solutions for urban space to accommodate pedestrians and cars. He found that social order was linked to the segregation of humans and motor vehicles and the need to create an array of measures in urban design for the regulation of the conduct of drivers and pedestrians, this vision is in contrast to Mondermans thesis of a shared approach. Almost all are short changed the way education is set up now. Boys and girls learn in different ways. They are not different merely because of how they are treated in society, but because of how their brains function. However, when teachers try to teach different genders at the same time, the majority of the time, it just will not work. Badly needed are teachers that understand the differences between, and how to teach, boys and girls. Coed schools hurt more than they help, not allowing children to reach their potential. Single sex schooling is more beneficial to the student s learning. Many claim that by separating young girls and boys, gender stereotypes are being enforced. In 2013, UCLA put together findings of pros and cons to single sex education. Among the downsides, a common fear was that this undermines gender equality. The thought is, because girls and boys are in different schools, this means one can t do what the other can. Generally, this means girls can t be as competitive, or independent, and boys can t be as caring, or artistic. INTRODUCTION Many engineering applications in the field of aerospace engineering, automobiles, electronic equipment etc. require very light material with good mechanical properties. Titanium based metal matrix composites with carbon nanotube reinforcement can be a solution for such applications. It can satisfy the requirement of light weight with very good strength. This study focuses on preparing titanium metal matrix composites with CNT reinforcements for various compositions for its mechanical properties. Ti alloys have been widely used as structural materials in aeronautical industries due to their attractive comprehensive properties, such as low density, high strength, ductility, toughness and resistance to fatigue. Observations on the MA behaviour of CNT Ti powder mixtures in this study showed that addition of CNTs alters the grinding behaviour of Ti powders, which typically agglomerates in ball milling, and that the MA process itself is also affected by the type of CNTs incorporated. While all types of the CNTs, namely SWCNTs, DWCNTs, and MWCNTs, functioned as grinding aid preventing agglomeration of Ti particles, only the MWCNTs seem to have uniformly embedded into the Ti particles whereas SWCNTs and DWCNTs were supposedly not dispersed fully within the matrix. These variations in MA behavior, dependent on the types of CNTs, are ascribed to the morphological characteristics of each CNT type such as overall shape, number of carbon walls, and diameter, and specific ... This theory is focused on the inequalities of different groups in a society, and on the level of power associated to these groups (Mooney, 2000). In the case of arranged marriages in India, there can be said to be many groups that both contribute and are created with unequal power through the process. To begin with, the parents potentially hold the future of their child in their hands as they are the ones who choose the significant other (Sandhya, 2013). In the interest of wealth, power and security, most families choose a person with a significant amount of higher status in the society because through the marriage, ties between the families strengthen and so do both of their overall prestige (Sandhya, 2013). It can be said that families marry into one another, and this creates economic inequalities as these groups are formed. This idea of marriage being a family affair all starts with people who hold more power than others, the parents versus the child, and end by creating an even larger group that differs from many other others in that country (Sandhya, 2013). • 30. The Naegleria Fowleri Amoeba Introduction The Naegleria fowleri amoeba resides in lakes, rivers, thermal springs, dirty swimming pool and sometimes soil. The amoebas thrive during the summer months due to the increase of temperature(Shakoor, Beg, and Mahmood 258). Naegleria amoeba infects and targets brain tissue of the central nervous system and the neuromuscular system. The central nervous system is responsible for integrating and responding to neural signals. The nervous system and muscles in the body work together to permit movement called the neuromuscular system. The brain is the main control for integrating sensory neurons and coordinating body functions: voluntary and involuntary. When needed to move a body part, a message is sent to the afferent sensory neurons, which go through the brain and into the spinal cord where the efferent motor neurons send an electrical signal to trigger the muscle to contract. Errors such as sliding of the actin and myosin filaments or failure to release neurotransmitters from the neuron can happen. The infection causes primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM) (Shakoor, Beg, and Mahmood 258).. It cannot be contracted by person to person, or by drinking contaminated water. The amoeba enters the body via nose by infected water and/or dust and penetrates the cribriform plate(Shenoy, Wilson, and Prashanth [Page 309]). The fall of 2010 I would be heading back to Steamboat just as I did the two previous years with the same plan and savings. All though this particular winter was not cooperating as the previous seasons had. Everybody knows that betting on the weather is never a good idea and this particular year I had made the wrong bet. The locals kept reassuring me that this was the year of El Niña which meant a tremendous amount of snow for the year, the only downside to this is that an El Niña winter likes to show up to the party late. For me that meant my budget calculations would be off, while I had a job lined up at my previous place of employment it would not begin until the ski mountain was open. This meant I had to find a job and fast, I took the bus down to the local Wendy s and applied for a job. Luckily they were hiring and I got the job, I had found a way to pay the rent for the month. While I had a job lined up when winter finally ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

For example, before entering China, Tesco may spend a lot to adjust to peoples preferences in there, which are absolutely different from that in Britain. Even people in different provinces have different habits. Every time Tesco expands there business to a new region, a great deal of money would be paid for tuition , which will have impacts on its cash flow and competitive strength. 3.1.3 Opportunities: When referring to the current external environmental conditions of Tesco, it is the global financial crisis. However, Tesco regards the crisis as its opportunities. According to the Economist (May 14, 2009), Tesco makes it a chance to push further into financial services. Since Tesco already has lots of customers experiencing the stores, their costs of acquiring customers are low. Also the brand is trusted. People who have witnessed the way in which retailers cooperate with banks in joint ventures constantly note how much more focused grocers are on the consumers demands. Retailers think first about the customer, banks about the profit, says an executive. In March Tesco announced an ambitious expansion of its banking activities. 3.1.4 Threats: Except for having brought Tesco opportunities, the financial crisis, however, has made its external environment bad. • 36. Sociolinguistic Status Of The Seri Language Sociolinguistic Status of the Seri Language ROUGH DRAFT 1.0 Introduction Seri is an indigenous language spoken by less than 1,000 people on the west coast of Sonora, Mexico (Lewis, Simons, Fennig 2016). The language is generally considered to be an isolate despite former attempts to include it in the proposed Hokan language family or link it to the now extinct Salinian language (Campbell, 1997; Marlett, 2007; Marlett, 2008; Marlett, 2011). SIL International has had a presence within the Seri community since 1951 when Edward and Mary Beck Moser moved to Sonora to study the nearly unrecorded language ( Edward W. Moser , n.d.). Seri is classified as Vulnerable by UNESCO (Moseley, 2010) and this paper will argue that historical trauma ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The same year, local hacienda owner and rancher Pascual Encinas drove his cattle into Seri land and tried to train the Seri to work for him (Sheridan, 2000, p. 112). When this failed, his well armed men attacked the Seri who were armed only with handcrafted weapons. By 1855, the Seri population had dropped to a mere 500 (Bowen Moser, 1996). While much has already been lost including the 6 band structure of the Seri people, cultural knowledge, and at least 2 extinct dialects (Bowen and Moser, 1996; Moser, 1963; Marlett, 2014) much still stands to be lost. The Seri population reached a low of approximately 200 speakers in the 1950s (Gordon, 2005) and, while population size is not an inherent signifier of language wellbeing, the small number of speakers puts Seri on a cultural and linguistic precipice due to the concurrent threat of colonization. The following sections will explore the ongoing pressures which further jeopardize the sociolinguistic status of the language. 3.0 Economic Wave The Seri are known among local populations for their extended refusal to submit to colonization. Their fierce opposition to Spanish and, later, Mexican attempts to exterminate or assimilate their population gained them notoriety as the Savage Seris of Sonora (David and Dawson, 1945). Because of this impressive resistance, the Seri are currently experiencing delayed effects of the economic wave as described by Nettle and Romaine (2000). ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 37. Essay on The Commander To what extent is the Commander presented as both villain and a figure of sympathy? The commander can be seen as a man torn between two worlds, he was one of the founders of Gilead yet still enjoys and yearns for the pleasures of the old society he managed to break. The commander is cool and collected on the surface but underneath he is bitter and corrupted for the world he has managed to create. The commander secretly longs for the world to be as it once was and this is why he savours his time with Offred because she may remind him of life before Gilead. It is also ironic how both characters feel under the surface an anger and repression of Gilead and they both want to break free. However on the surface when they play scrabble with ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This could represent the villainous side to him, as his power and authority create a shield, which hides his true self. This means Offred and the reader are not completely sure of who he is and his wants. Throughout this chapter the theme of having or gaining more power is very evident. The fact that the commander does have so much power and Offred has so little makes him more villainous. This is because we can evidently see how Offred could be so easily manipulated by this very powerful man. However we see a more villainous side to The Commander when he asks Offred to play scrabble with him. He manipulates Offred into having almost a false relationship with him because this is non existent with his wife, Serena Joy. The relationship between the commander and Serena Joy is very numb, cold and formal. They are very alike in character and so they control each other. Their relationship is somewhat business like and lifeless. In one chapter Serena Joy says to Offred He s my Husband till death do us part and this sentence feels almost forced. As the reader we feel she says this because of the last handmaid and because of the jealousy she feels towards Offred. She wants to take it away before she can even have it. This relationship with Serena Joy puts things out of balance and Offred and in a way wants to go back to normality. He is unhappy about the situation in Gilead and wants to forget about the present and live in the past. He ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. What Is The Spiritual Path Essay I have walked the spiritual path for 30 years, and I have been studying various spiritual teachings. I have also been involved with several organizations and spiritual teachers. I have friends who have been involved with more teachers, and I ve watched hundreds of people have been struggling with a spiritual path. Based on my experience and observation, I have come to one conclusion is clear. The difference between those who succeed on the spiritual path and those who continue to struggle with the frustration is how they view the concept of teachers. Push button mentality If you take a step back and see the big picture, the essence of the spiritual path (or life, really) is to come out of ignorance and into understanding, out of the darkness and into terang in mind, that is. There is an old adage that states, if people knew better, they would do better. I believe that any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Why do people feel frustrated As well programmed our customers, we choose products that look attractive to us and eagerly began to consume it. But after a while usually a short time we started to feel like someone who has flipped the switch, but the light has not come. So we keep on flipping the switch on and off, and while we could hear the click, the light will not come. This is usually when we start to feel frustrated, and we may even take it out on the teacher or teaching that does not seem to work. I personally have felt this frustration and I have seen in many others. It is quite understandable, especially when one considers that so many teachers or organizations who make promises they can not deliver. They have also been caught up in a consumer s approach to spiritual growth, and they have either consciously or intentionally decided to tell people what they want to hear. So what do we do? Well, some people give up there and never tried again. Yet most of us do not give up ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
