2. This story demonstrates the role of The Mirror in safeguarding freedom. This can be argued because Mark Owens would not want the public to know that he has had affairs with ten other women. http://www.mirror.co.uk/celebs/news/2010/03/12/take-that-s-mark-owen-s-five-month-marriage-is-on-the-rocks-after-confessing-10-affairs-to-wife-emma-115875-22104798/
3. This story is an unnecessary intrusion into her privacy on the part of the popular press in The News Of The World. It is about the mother of Jade Goody shown in a video taking drugs. I chose this story because Jade Goody’s mother is not famous for anything, only because of she is the mother of Jade Goody. http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/news/761071/Jade-Goodys-mums-16-hour-drugs-and-booze-binge.html
4. In my opinion, I feel that the press have too much freedom and have an unnecessary intrusion on someone’s privacy and I think the popular press abuse the power they have. These invasions of privacy upset the person involved and can cause more problems than when they started. This is because the press are revealing very personal stories. On the other hand, some stories which include invasion into someone’s privacy are in the public interest.
5. Recently, there was a high profile case in which John Terry took out a ‘gagging’ order against the News of the World which, temporarily, prevented the paper from reporting a story about his personal life before the order was overturned. I think that in some cases, individuals should be able to ‘gag’ the press in this way because if the individual’s career, family, or safety were at risk, they should be allowed to control the stories about them going into the newspaper.
