The document provides an introduction and overview of fire water pumping systems. It discusses the key components of these systems including pumps, drivers, controllers, and accessories. Pumps are the primary component and come in various types depending on the application and flow needs. Drivers power the pumps and can be electric motors or diesel engines. Controllers manage the operation of the pumps and drivers. Accessories include gauges, valves, and flowmeters to monitor and control the water flow and pressure. Standards such as NFPA 20 provide requirements for the installation and operation of fire water pumping systems.

2. A fire hydrant system is a water supply with a sufficient
pressure and flow delivered through pipes throughout a
building to strategically located network of valves for fire-
fighting purposes.
OVERVIEW
FIRE HYDRANT SYSTEM
3. An uninterrupted water supply is the primary weapon for
extinguishment
Water sources include:
Municipal and private water systems (WASA etc)
Static water sources (Reservoir)
Mobile water supply operations (Fire Tender)
Recommended treatments
Remove impurities
All water must be suitable for drinking.
Chemicals used to kill bacteria and
Harmful organisms.

PRIMARY COMPONENTS
FIRE HYDRANT SYSTEM
5. Flooded Suction: Where water flows from a reservoir to the pump
directly without any help from outside.
Head (Discharge Head): How high the pump can through water.
Discharge Pressure: The total pressure available at the fire pump
discharge flange.
Pressure-Regulating Device: A device designed for the purpose of
reducing, regulating, controlling, or restricting water pressure.
Fire Pump: A pump that is a provider of liquid flow and pressure
dedicated to fire protection.
Foam Concentrate Pump: A pump that inject an additional
element, foam concentrate, in existing stream of water
TERMINOLOGY
6. Centrifugal Pump: A pump in which the pressure is developed
principally by the action of centrifugal force.
End Suction Pump: A single suction pump having its suction nozzle
on the opposite side of the casing from the stuffing box and having
the face of the suction nozzle perpendicular to the longitudinal axis
of the shaft.
Horizontal Pump: A pump with the shaft normally in a horizontal
position.
Horizontal Split-Case Pump: A centrifugal pump characterized by a
housing that is split parallel to the shaft.
In-Line Pump: A centrifugal pump whose drive unit is supported by
the pump having its suction and discharge flanges on
approximately the same centerline.
TERMINOLOGY
7. Multistage Multiport Pump: A single-driver pump with multiple
impellers operating in series where the discharge from each
impeller, except the last impeller, is the suction for the next
impeller, and discharge ports are provided after multiple impellers.
High-Rise Building: A building where the floor of an occupiable
story is greater than 75 ft (23 m) above the lowest level of fire
department vehicle access.
Pressure Control Valve: A pilot-operated pressure reducing valve
designed for the purpose of reducing the downstream water
pressure to a specific value under both flowing (residual) and
nonflowing (static) conditions.
Pressure-Reducing Valve: A valve designed for the purpose of
reducing the downstream water pressure under both flowing
(residual) and nonflowing (static) conditions.
TERMINOLOGY
8. Relief Valve: A device that allows the diversion of liquid to limit
excess pressure in a system.
Circulation Relief Valve: A valve used to cool a pump by
discharging a small quantity of water. This valve is separate from
and independent of the main relief valve.
Rated Flow: The capacity of the pump at rated speed and rated
pressure as marked on the manufacturer's nameplate.
Rated Pressure: The net pressure (differential pressure) at rated
flow and rated speed as marked on the manufacturer’s nameplate.

PUMPS- Philosophy
To protect lives and properties against fire by
supplying an adequate water supply to automatic
sprinklers or standpipe systems
A fire pump system should operate irrespective of
any damage it may cause to itself
No element of the system under emergency
conditions should:
Prevent a fire pump from turning on
Cause a fire pump to turn off
