2. Finished Piece 1: Project Statement
While thinking about surface, I was drawn to reflected surfaces such as water and
mirrors. I focused on these two specifically because of the dichotomy between a
man-made structure and nature, yet their ability to reflect joins them together.
Their reflective quality is transformed when a disruption occurs, whether that is
from breaking a mirror or breaking the surface of water. This disruption is carried
over when you place yourself in the reflection. The idea of inner reflection and the
reveal of one’s true self is elevated by the fragmentation of the mirror. I wanted to
construct water formations using fragments of a mirror to reflect this idea. Using
blue light to illuminate the surface in order to symbolically imitate water.

7. Finished Piece 1: Feedback and Reflection
If I were to do this project again, I would refine the process for constructing the
sculpture. Specifically, I would assemble the piece on a flat surface that was easily
moveable. This would make the sculpture less fragile and easier to travel with. I
did find that the reflections from the mirror were very successful and the lighting
added to the overall display of the sculpture. I do wish I had captured how it
looked without the lighting, but I think it still turned out well.Some feedback that I
received was that I could experiment with different lighting and see how that
changes the sculpture’s interpretation.

8. Finished Piece II: Project Statement
My idea was to make a candle sculpture out of wax and then melt it. I intended to
make abstract patterns out of wax to represent the idea of the nature of life. The
burning and melting of the candle is important to the idea of life’s beginning and end.
The light flickering is a symbol of life itself. There are many paths that one can take
and the significance of choice in life is why I am deciding to incorporate pattern and
abstraction together. The existence of humans in this world is unique and something
that is often overlooked when thinking about where life takes us. The universe has
such a nature that life is possible; this is an ever present theme in my personal life and
serves as a reminder that life can be fleeting and to carve a life for yourself that you
are happy with. The journey of life can be seen through these candle sculptures.

17. Finished Piece II: Feedback and Reflection
The feedback that I got during critique was about how I could incorporate the wax
more into the cement base. I feel that with the burning of the sculpture it helps
more with that integration. We also talked about what I would do if I could add
more to the sculpture. I would use the cement and form similar structures that I
made out of wax and put the cement parts into the wax and vice versa.
