5. Abstract
In recently years, wearable devices is undoubtedly the world’s most popular electronic
products, which can be seen in each leading trade shows for consumer electronics.
Most of wearable devices include physiological monitoring functions. Manufacturers
are actively pursuing patents to protect their products, posing a risk for corporations
looking to entering the wearable market. In this report, we present our analyses and
researches of patents involving wrist-worn wearable physiological detection
technologies. The interpretations on patent technology information can serves as
reference for the assessment of patent infringement risks and the development of
production planning strategies.

According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), worldwide wearables shipments
grew 197.6% in Q3 2015 compared to Q3 2014. Apple moved second behind Fitbit in just
6 months, with its popular Apple Watch, which launched in April. Xiaomi's Mi Band posted
an impressive 815.4% YoY growth as the #3 vendor, besting Samsung, the first major
player in the market. 97% of Xiaomi’s shipments went into China, revealing once again
that the market is taking flight and accounts for a significant share of the world market.

This figure displays the trend of patent applications associated with wearable physiological signal
detection technologies. The values for 2014 and 2015 are only for reference due to the fact that not
all patent filings of 2014 and 2015 have been published at the time this report was generated. Two
uptrends are observed in the period. During the first uptrend from 1999 to 2006, top 10 applicants
includes Seiko, Medtronic, Philips, Omron and Biosense. Nike, along with the above-mentioned
companies, ranked among major applicants in the second uptrend during 2010 and 2013. Most of
the patents published in the earlier uptrend are healthcare-related. As Nike, Fitbit, Google, Apple
and other key vendors launched consumer health wearables since 2010, the number of patents
involving health management, detection accuracy and battery management started to rise.

This figure exhibits top 10 global assignees in wearable physiological signal detection technologies
(ranked top-down by the number of patent applications), and their patent filing trends during 1995-
2015. As can be seen, the assignees come from various industries, including healthcare,
electronics, and entertainment, indicating that wearable technologies are leveraged in every
industry. The figure also reflects the market trend that companies in more and more industries are
starting to invest actively in wearable technologies.

This figure presents an analysis of patent applicants of wearable photoplethysmography (PPG)
technology. Major applicants are shown in the figure, with the horizontal axis indicating number of
patent applications, vertical axis showing number of patent grants and bubble size reflecting patent
family size. Based on the analysis, companies looking to use PPG technology for wearable
physiological signal detection function can identify major competitors, the technologies they have
been or will be granted patent protection, and their global patent families. These data can be further
customized into certain maps and tables.

Matrix Analysis (Method/Component) for Wearable
Physiological Detection Technology
This matrix provides an analysis of detection methods and components for wearable physiological
signal detection technology related patents. As can be seen, there are 3,874 patents (747 patent
families) relating to wearable PPG physiological signal detection technology. Component analysis
was performed based on these patents to find out which components (such as light source and light
detector) are used in PPG devices and facilitate the design around process.
