2. We live on planet called earth. It is home to human
beings, animals, birds, insects and millions of trees and
small plants. It is special as it is the only planet of the
solar system to have life on it.
3. The earth is made up of land, water and air . It is surrounded by a
layer of air called the
Atmosphere. This layer has oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, dust
particle and water. We cannot see but we can feel the presence of
air around us. The earth has 21 % oxygen gas which is required by
all living beings to breathe.
Our earth is also called the ‘ blue planet ‘ because three-
fourth (70%) of the earth is covered with water and one-fourth
(30%) is land. It is neither too far and nor too close to the sun.
thus, it has suitable temperature and climatic conditions for living
beings to survive.
4. Horizon and coast
When we stand facing a vast land or the sea, the sky appears to
meet the land or the sea at the other end. The line at which the
land / sea and the sky appear to meet is known as ‘ HORIZON ‘ .
In reality, the sky and the land / sea never meet.
The place where the land and the sea meet is called the coast.
5. Rotation
The earth rotates on its axis ones in
twenty-four hours from west to east
which is called the daily motion or the
rotation of the earth. This causes day
and night.
6. Revolution
The earth revolves around the sun in an elliptical orbit,
in 3651/4 days(one year) which is also called the annual
motion or the earth. It causes changes in the seasons
on the earth.
7. Oceans and continents
the earth consists of large landmasses and water
bodies. The large landmasses are called continents and
the large water bodies are called oceans.
There are smaller water bodies such as seas, rivers,
ponds and lakes.
There are seven continents and five oceans in the world.
