1.SMART GRID
• A "smart grid" is an electrical grid which
includes a variety of operational and energy
measures including smart meters, smart
appliances, renewable energy resources, and
energy efficient resourcesElectronic power
conditioning and control of the production
and distribution of electricity are important
aspects of the smart grid.
FEATURES OF SMART GRID
i. Reliability
ii. Flexibility in network topology
iii. Efficiency
a) Load adjustment/Load balancing
b) Peak curtailment/leveling and time of use pricing
iv. Sustainability
v. Market-enabling
a) Demand response support
b) Platform for advanced services
c) Provision megabits, control power with kilobits, sell
the rest
COMPONENTS OF SMART GRID
Security Requirements for Smart Grid
Applications from a Variety of Potential Attacks
(Examples)
Smart grid’s behavior during
disasters
Common concept of damage
to the electric grid during
disasters:
Real sustained damage in
more than 90 % of the area
DIFFERENCES BETWEEN TRADITIONAL GRID
AND SMART GRID
MICROGRID
• A microgrid is a localized grouping of
electricity sources and loads that normally
operates connected to and synchronous with
the traditional centralized grid (macrogrid),
but can disconnect and function
autonomously as physical and/or economic
conditions dictate.
TYPES OF MICROGRIDS
1. CAMPUS ENVIRONMENT /INSTITUTIONAL GRIDS
2. REMOTE OFF-GRID MICRO GRIDS
3. MILITARY BASE MICRO GRID
4. COMMERTIAL AND INDUSTRIAL (C&I) MICRO GRIDS
COMPONENTS OF MICRO GRID
1. Local generation
2. Consumption
3. Energy Storage
4. Point of common coupling (PCC)
Security Requirements for Micro Grid
Applications (Examples)
