The Sequential Methodologies What is the oldest, most common way to plan and execute a project? Answer: in sequence. Task A comes before Task B, which comes before Task C. And at the very end of the sequence is your deliverable. The Traditional, Sequential Methodologies: • Waterfall - Do task A first, then task B, then task C • Critical Path Method - string dependent tasks together from start to finish • Critical Chain Project Management - reserve resources for the most critical tasks More details in our Project Management Guide Click here

The PMI/PMBOK “Method” Project management purists insist that PMBOK (the Project Management Body of Knowledge) is not a methodology, rather it’s an agreed upon set of standards for managing projects. But some companies say they use PMBOK as their PM method. This typically means they break down their work into the 5 process groups documented within the PMBOK Guide: Initiating, Planning, Executing, Controlling, and Closing. The Agile Family Agile can refer to the four values espoused in the Agile manifesto for software development. Or it can be one of several frameworks, including Scrum and Kanban. Either way, these methods have objectives defined by the customer, while final deliverables can change. Meanwhile the project team works in iterative cycles, evaluating results after each cycle, & always collaborating with customers. The Agile Family: • Scrum - sprints, daily standups, clearing out roadblocks • Kanban - tasks made visual in swimlanes • Extreme Programming - short work sprints, frequent iterations, constant collaboration • Adaptive Project Framework - using Requirements Breakdown Structure (RBS) to define project goals, stakeholders can change scope at each sprint More details in our Project Management Guide Click here

The Uncertainty Methodologies These are the PM methodologies that deal with uncertainty and change, specifically how to manage projects so that they succeed despite risks. The uncertainty methodologies: • Event Chain Methodology (ECM) - analyzing uncertainty models & optimizing schedules • Extreme Project Management (XPM) - managing stakeholders & eliminating uncertainty via efficient collaboration More details in our Project Management Guide Click here

The Process-Based Methodologies These PM methods set out a standard approach to managing a project using methods that almost veer into business process management (BPM). Each method focuses on work as a collection of processes. Some PM purists dislike these methods, but they’re still valid ways to plan & execute a project. The Process-Based Methodologies: • PRINCE2 - 7 principles, 7 themes, 7 processes • Lean Project Management - maximum efficiency, minimum waste • Six Sigma - improvement by eliminating defects/bugs • Lean Six Sigma - no waste + zero defects More details in our Project Management Guide Click here
