6. DRUNK DRIVING INCIDENTS
AROUND UNIVERSITY OF
KENTUCKY
One of the biggest concerns around any college campus is
the issue of drunk driving.
• The University of Kentucky Police Department alone
reported over 150 DUI’s in 2015.
• A high number of these DUI’s were reported on South
Limestone.
• Other roads with a high number of DUI’s include Waller
Avenue and Nicholasville Road.
• In 2014, there were 11 fatalities and 161 injuries
resulting from drunk driving accidents in Fayette
County.

7. BICYCLE ACCIDENTS
Students frequently use bicycles as a
means of transportation on campus,
leading to many bicycle accidents in
Lexington. One study found that
between 2008 and 2012, there were 305
bicycle crashes in Lexington. A
University of Kentucky geographer,
along with the help of his students, did
an analysis of bicycle accidents between
2008 and 2013 finding that areas
around the UK campus had the highest
concentration of accidents. They also
found:
• 25 percent of riders involved
weren’t wearing helmets.
• 21 percent were hit-and-run
accidents.
• The four most critical areas for
car and bike collisions were
South Limestone north of
Virginia Avenue, Winchester
Road near East Third Street,
Rose Street from Euclid to
Columbia avenues, and Rose
from Columbia to Huguelet
Drive.

8. PEDESTRIAN ACCIDENTS
Whether pedestrians are walking to class, going to games or
enjoying a night out with their friends, there are many high-
traffic areas in which walkers might be prone to accident and
injury. A Lexington-Herald article from 2012 said the Lexington
Police Department reported that in the previous five years, there
were 800 pedestrian collisions, leading to 28 deaths. Here are a
few examples of pedestrian accidents in Lexington.
• In 2008, a young woman was killed in a hit-and-run accident
while crossing South Broadway.
• In December of 2015, three pedestrians were critically injured
by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run accident at the intersection
of Winchester Road, Third Street and Midland Avenue.
• In October of 2015, a man crossing Red Mile Road was struck
and killed by a driver.

9. TRUCK ACCIDENTS
Large truck accidents
frequently happen on major
Lexington roads, like the 2014
tractor-trailer wreck at I-75
and North Broadway. But mid-
sized trucks are sometimes
involved in accidents on
smaller city roads. That was
the case in 2012, when WKYT
reported on a collision
between a moped and a UPS
delivery truck on North
Broadway that left the moped
driver in serious condition at
the University of Kentucky
hospital.

10. BUS ACCIDENTS
Between 2008 and 2012, there were 153 school bus crashes
in Lexington. There are also traffic accidents involving
Lextran, Lexington’s public bus system. Here are some
examples of bus accidents from around Lexington:
• A collision involving a Lextran bus, a van and an SUV
occurred at Bryan Avenue and New Circle Road in 2015.
• Four people were sent to the hospital after a collision
between a Lextran bus and an SUV at the intersection of
Fourth Street and Upper in 2013.
• Three people were injured when a car rolled onto its
side and slid into a Lextran bus at the intersection of
Martin Luther King Boulevard and Constitution in 2013.

11. PARKING LOT ACCIDENTS
While we might think of vehicle
accidents occurring on larger, heavily
trafficked roads like Nicholasville Road
and Richmond Road, many accidents
also occur in parking lots. In 2014,
there were 3,367 collisions in Fayette
County parking lots, leading to 105
injuries. They can happen in:
• Stadium and Arena Parking -
Parking lots outside of
Commonwealth Stadium and Rupp
Arena see high levels of traffic on
any given game day.
• Student Parking Lots – Accidents
can occur in parking lots around
student housing areas like Greg
Paige Apartments, fraternity houses
and sorority houses.
• Parking Structures - Parking
structures can be dangerous due to
dim lights and lower levels of
visibility.

12. FALLS AT UNIVERSITY OF
KENTUCKY SPORTING
EVENTS
Kentuckians love their Wildcats, and the Big Blue Nation
pours out to see games at Rupp Arena and Commonwealth
Stadium. Unfortunately, fans occasionally suffer injuries at
these venues in the form of serious falls. For example:
• In 2014, a former UK football player was in attendance of a
football game at Commonwealth Stadium when he fell 35 feet
from the upper deck and sustained serious injuries.
• In 2013, tragedy befell one UK fan and his family after the
73-year-old fell down seven bleacher rows in the upper deck
of Rupp Arena, leaving him paralyzed from the chest down.
