A.S. DT COURSE WORK

POINT OF SALE
This point of sale was in M&S. this is a good point of sale as it
clearly displays the product, it is eye catching to people (e.g.
they just get a glimpse of it and they think it’s a person but
then when they look again they realise and by this time the
product is already in there mind), it gives you the name of the
brand and all the items you can see are available next to this
manikin. However, it does not give you vital information such
as the price and the colour scheme is quite bland.
This point of sale was in a jewellery shop in the
glades. This is an example of a bad point of sale
because of a though things. Firstly it offers no
information about the product(i.e. price, brand
etc.) also you are unable to go and actually pick it
up in the shop you would have to get a member
of staff( however this is understandable as it is
probably expensive jewellery). However it does
stand out with the features it has which do draw
in customers.
This is a point of sale in boots. I thought this was a very
good point of sale as it is a good size and eye level for
shoppers, it has good colours that encourage people to
go over to it, also the person on it is staring at the
customer which catches there eye and makes them
turn around and look at it. It clearly shows the brand
and has a picture of the product. However it does not
show the price and the actual product is not on display(
however you can see where it is suppose to be which
ether means that it has run out and was being replaced
of that it had been stolen as there was nothing
attaching it to the point of sale.
This is a point of sale in WHsmiths .this is a good
point of sale as it has bright colours, it was in
the middle of the shop and THE Sun is a well
known newspaper. It has loads of product
copies that you reach in and take. However this
point of sale does not have the price of the
product but because THE Sun is a well known
newspaper people who buy the sun regularly
would already know how much it costs therefor
the price does not need to be on the point of
sale as they are targeting there regular
audience.
POINT OF SALE
This point of sale was in Boots. This is a good point of sale
because it shows the brand clearly, it gives you the product
that is being shown by the design of the point of sale and a
lot of them, the design is eye catching as it is a big version of
the product plus all the colours used in the point of sale draw
the potential customer in. also it was in a good position as it
was next to where people walked so they would have to walk
past it were ether they go.
This point of sale was in Whsmiths. This is a good point of sale
because the brand, Coca-Cola, is shown clearly and also it is one of the
most recognisable brands in the world and this helps the point of sale
as people like what they already know about unlike new things which
people can be curious about. This point of sale doesn’t show the price
of the product in big as it does not just sell Coca-Cola, however if you
do go up to it the price will be there under a Coca-Cola product. Even
though this point of sale doesn’t just sell Coca-Cola does not make it
bad as the other products add colour to it drawing more customers in
and because the is ‘Coca-Cola’ written in large lettering at the bottom
means that the more suggestible people are more likely to pick up a
Coca-Cola product because it has been shown to them, even if they
have not noticed the sign.
This point of sale was in JD. This is a quite good point of sale
because it stands tall ( if I was to guess about 6 feet) and has
an interesting design which help draw customers as they
want to look at it closely. It shows the brand well and has the
product that they are selling on show, however it does not
show the price of the product and although the design can
bee a good thing, it also stops customers from seeing the
product if they are not at the right angle.
This point of sale was in JD. This point of sale is good
because even though the actually unit is just white, it
uses the colours of the different products to make
customers notice it. It clearly shows the brand of the
product, however it does not show the price apart
from on a tad on each individual product. Also it does
not sell a specific Lacoste product as it has two
different types of tops that is on display. But the
positioning of the product is good as it is very central
to the shop floor which means it can be seen be
customers nearly anywhere they stand in the shop.
POINT OF SALE
This point of sale was in Sports Direct. This is a good point of
sale because there is loads of bright colours that stand out as
well as a large picture (which you are unable to see all of it
due to the picture) of the product which is also in bright
colours. Also it has information on the boot as well as the
price and brand of the product. However in order to get the
product you must check to see for your size which means
finding a member of staff (although due to the product this is
required but they could find a way to make to easier for the
customer).
This point of sale was in Boots. This is a good point
of sale because it shows the brand clearly, it gives
you the product that is being shown by the design
of the point of sale as it is an enlarged version of
the product (similar to a point of sale on the
previous sale) which stands tall which palls in the
customers. However it does not show a price and
although the colour is bright, gold normally puts
people off as it some times look tacky.
This point of sale was in a shop window in the glades. This
is a good point of sale as it clearly shows the product and
has models that would make people interested in the
product. Also it shows prices under each product.
However there is a lot of products on sale which means
the customer would have to stand there deciding and it
was at the bottom shelf which means the customer would
have to keep bending over to look at the products.
This point of sale was in Jack Jones. This point of sale
is an example of a bad point of sale as it does not
show the brand (unless u actually pick up the product
and look at it more closely), it does not show the
price on the product so you have to ask a member of
staff. However the layout of the point of sale is quite
good as it could interest customers to look at it, plus
this display very big as it takes up the whole wall.
Mr Natty is aimed at older men as it is a more of a mature
brand for a man who knows what style he wants, therefore
Mr Natty is the best brand for him as each product is for a
specific look or style, unlike a younger male as they might
still be experimenting with there hair style and trying new
looks all the time. Also the web site gives you an indication
as to who it is aimed at because it is more of an older style.
MR NATTY
POINT OF SALE
This point of sale was in Boots. This is a good
point of sale as it holds the products that they
are trying to sell, it clearly shows the brand
and the size is good as it is eye level. Also
what is good about this point of sale is the
design because the shape of it ensures a 180
degrees view point which means the cover a
wide range of customers which means it has
more of a chance of being noticed.
This point of sale was in Boots. This point
of sale is good as it shows the product and
gives you an opportunity to try the
product, it holds information on the
product as well as the cost of the product
and the brand. However it doesn’t really
have any bright colours to draw
customers in which means it is relying on
the customer to spot the product rather
than the point of sale drawing the
customer in.
L'Oreal men expert would be for a wide range of age group’s as it
appeals to many different needs, for example you can get styling
products which would be for a younger male but you can also get
products for older men such as a face wash or a hair product that
reduces grey hair. Also the website in terms of age group is mutual as it
doesn’t really go towards a certain age group and all the models on the
web site ranges from younger men to older men. Because of this the
age group would be between early 20s to late 40s.
L’OREAL MEN
EXPERT
Old spice is a brand more for younger men as in the
adverts it has strong men that look like they know
what they want and younger men see this and say ‘I
want to be like that’. However the classic version of
old spice could be for 30 years old as they could look
at the adverts and think ‘I want to be young and
strong again’ and then they would go and buy this
product.
OLD SPICE
Lynx’s is mainly aged at younger males because in most of the
adverts there are men with attractive girls and then the moral is
that if you wear links that person in the adverts could be you. This
then makes the younger males want to buy it as they believe the
advert. So this would be aimed at men from the ages of 13 to 17.
also when you are this age you are not worried about getting
grooming products to help you, for example men's
moisturiser, because you just want to get things that make you
look and smell good which is what links does as many to all of
there products are to style and give you a sent.
LYNX
Fish is for a more younger generation because of the
colour and type of bottle that they use and also the way
they show that it is a styling product, which most of the
younger generation are concerned with. Yet the way
the web site is laid out more old fashion than the way
the product has been made which gives it a sense that it
joins the young with the old so it could also be aimed at
a slightly older male but I do think that the majority of
the consumer is of the younger generation.
FISH
Hackett is more of a brand for a man who wants to achieve but also who wants to
look good. The style Hackett sells has got the business feel to it but also can be for
a casual meet and greet which I think is that they have done with there male
grooming range. Because of this I feel that it is aimed at men between the ages of
20 to 35 as those are the ages where men start undertake new opportunities in life
and then keeping the opportunities you have gained to make a life for yourself.
Also you would want a style that goes with these opportunities which is what is
provided by the Hackett grooming brand.

The point of sale needs to have an even blend of function
and form so that the customer gets what he needs and
stays entertained while looking at it so he doesn’t walk off.

The point of sale needs to be put in the right position
so that it will be visible for the customer from most
points in the shop in order to get the highest chances

Target marketing is important because it helps you get
an understanding of the product and it also helps you
to style you design.

The materials for the point of sale need to be considered as
they can reflect on the brand.
Ascetics (form + branding)
 Must display branding features.
 Bright colours.
 Clear and easy to read information.
This is very important to a point of sale as the look of the
point of sale and the way it is shown to the public is how it
gets customers to look at the product and in the long term
make a sale.
Sustainability
 Must be able to last.
 Can it be recycled.
This is good in a point of sale because if it has sustainability
which means that it will have a long term use which means
it works as a point of sale.
Safety
 Must not have and sharp points.
 Must be stable.
 Assemble with out injury.
Safety is key in a point of sale as it is going to be in a
public place which means it can not cause harm to any
of the customers otherwise it would not be able to be
used as a point of sale if it is not safe.
Environment
 Must have suitable materials.
 Must be friendly to the environment.
 Must not look out of place.
The point of sale must not look out of place otherwise
people will notice it but mainly avoid it. Also it must be
environmentally friendly in relation to materials used.
Interactivity
 Must be able to use the product.
 Must not be able to steal the product.
 Must not be able to get bored with the product.
The point of sale must show the product clearly so that
the customer is able to pick it up and test it, however
they must not be allowed to take it to far from the
product..
Also it must hold the customers attention long enough
for them to familiarise them selves with the product.
Social networking
Construction
 Must be simple to construct for the user.
 Must be safe to construct.
 Once constructed it must be able to stay constructed
until it is no longer needed.
The construction must be looked at when looking at a point
of sale so that you can see if anyone can put it up or if it
needs someone who knows what they are doing. When you
know this you can then start to look at what shops would
use your point of sale.
Ergonomic
Pricing
 Must be reasonable to the cost of production.
 Must affordable for the target market.
The pricing of the point of sale must relate to the product
and the materials used. This is important because if the
pricing is wrong then the point of sale would not work.
Future
 Must last until it is no longer needed.
 Would it be able to be reused or would it only be for
one product.
 Must be able to last in the market without going out of
fashion.
You need to think of the future of a point of sale because
you can think more on the cost and materials you are going
to use.
TASK ANALYSIS
This shows all the work that I have done. I
have been updating it every week so that I
can see my progress of my folder.
The situation hat Hackett has is that it does not advertise there male grooming range
well enough. This causes the customer to steer away from Hackett and go to a brand that
is more easy to access such as links. To overcome this situation they need a point of sale
that clearly shows the Hackett products to there customers so that they can access it
easier.
BRIEF
SITUATION
Design a new point of sale display for Hackett's male grooming
range. The unit must display at least one of Hackett's ranges
and must clearly show the Hackett brand.
SITUATION & BRIEF
Ascetics
It must show the brand colour and the brand his
self. The shape of the design and the logo is also
needed as well as information. The pattern, style
and images that may link to the brand also needs to
be considered to the ascetics.
Cost
Must look at the cost of the actual point of
sale and how much it costs to make it (that
includes the material and manufacturing
cost). Also consider if the material would be
a high or low end cost.
Customers
It must target the right audience in the area
and environment that the audience would
be in. Also it must include ergonomics for
the customer and has the right design to
attract the customer.
Environment
where point of sale is going to be put
and what is happening in the
environment (e.g. the Olympics). Also
you need to look at if the point of sale is
environmentally friendly due to the
materials used.
Size
Ergonomics must be considered in
the size in correlation to the
customer as well as looking at if the
size is suitable for the function of the
point of sale. Also look at the size in
relation with materials and the cost
of those materials.
Safety
It must be sturdy so it does not fall over
and also it must be easy for the person
to assemble the point of sale. You
would also have to think about if you
spray the product would anyone be
affected because of allergies. A manger
part to consider is the avoidable
instances (e.g. if you are able to take
the product away from the point of
sale, someone decides to steal it, the
member of staff then has to put
themselves in danger and get it back).
Function
Must be able to show the
brand of the product as well as
show the actual brand. It must
also give information on the
product (e.g. price etc.) and
must be able to test the
product safely.
Materials
Must be using the materials that are relevant to the
brand like wood, metal, glass and acrylic. But only
use the materials if they relate to the brand.

These are the questions I have
asked in my questionnaire. These
questions will give me enough
information to decide what
things I need to consider when
designing and making my point
of sale. I have given these
questions to a range of males
between the ages of 20 to 35 as
this is the age group for the
brand I have chosen, Hackett.

This questionnaire was helpful as it gave
me an indication as to what I will add or
take away from my point of sale design
and now I know what people prefer to
see in a point of sale.

Colours that reflect
the brand
Aspects of both
Hugo Boss is a similar product to Hackett as both brands market the
same things, its target marketing is the same and the style of there
products is the same. Hugo Boss is a huge competitor to Hackett .
The target audience is 20 to 35 year olds, the same as Hackett, but
Hugo Boss is more of a modern man who looks to the future un like
Hackett which is still modern style but with the past in mind as the
customer prefers old London rather than Hugo Boss ‘s customer
which prefers new London.
Hugo Boss does show off there male grooming range more than
Hackett because Hugo Boss has points of sales not only all there
stores, but in others as well ,such as boots. Where as Hackett only
shows off its male grooming range in only there main stores and
not the smaller ones in London (for example the Hackett store in
canary wharf does not market the male grooming range) this puts
Hugo Boss above Hackett because if they market the product more
then they make more sales.
Dunhill is on the same page as Hugo Boss. its style is modern and it
looks to the future the same as Hugo boss but the age range is a bit
different to Hackett. Hackett’s targets market is 20 to 35 where as
Dunhill's age range is more like 25 to 35 year olds as it is also a bit
more mature than Hackett as there products they sell have an older
gentlemen look to them.
The way Dunhill shows its hale grooming products is better than
Hackett as well as they have points of sales in there
stores, however where Hackett's main selling point is both there
clothing range and there male grooming products where as Dunhill
focuses on the clothing and not much on there male grooming
range, yet they do still market it more.
COMPETITIVE PRODUCTS
Pal Zileri is like Hackett in many ways. They both has similar
age range, however Pal Zileri would be aged 25 to 35 where
as Hackett is 20 to 35 . This means that it falls down to
marketing there male grooming products.
In marketing Pal Zileri does more as they advertise all of
there male grooming range on there web site and in other
shops as well as there own, where as Hackett's male
grooming range is hard to come across as they do not show
it in there web site or in there shops.
The only difference is they have a slight difference in the
style. Where Hackett is modern but looks to the traditional
style, Pal Zileri is just modern and looks at what is
happening not and continues to do so.
Ben Sherman is a competitor to Hackett as its like its
younger brother. Ben Sherman is a slightly younger age
group to Hackett as it is ages 18 to late 20s, this is because
it has different ranges that appeal to a younger audience.
And ,although dealing with a similar style of clothing, Ben
Sherman is slightly more affordable then Hackett, but not
as high end as Hackett, which is where the divide is.
The style that is similar is there modern approach as Ben
Sherman looks at what is modern and what is now where
as Hackett looks at modern but with a traditional look.
Marketing wise Ben Sherman does more as there shops
are more local, reaching out to a lower end of the market
rather that Hackett which is mainly biased in London. Also
Ben Sherman has more advertising and gets sold in other
shops as well as there own where as Hackett is more
exclusive, however the exclusiveness of Hackett is a good
thing as it makes sure that Hackett stays in the high end of
the market.
This point of sale for Pal Zileri was in Harvey Nichols. This
point of sale sat on a counter which had other products by
the brand in (as you can see in the picture). When people
go up to the point of sale, the first thing they do it pick up
one of the bottles that is unpackaged.
At this point there was a man who works for Harvey Nichols
who talks to you about the product you just picked up, they
tell you the price and there opinion of the product.
Then the buyer sprays the product on there wrist and then
smells it to see if they like it.
Then three things can happen. There customer would ether
like the smell and then pick up one of the packaged bottles
at the back and then buys it, the customer moves on to ne
next bottle till they find one they like and then they buy
it, or they are not sure about the product so then the
employee encourages you to take a booklet that has the
products and more with the prices so that you are able to
look at the product and maybe decide on it in a later date.
That’s why I think that this point of sale is for the people
who are not very familiar with the brand as there is not a
huge variety to chose from so the customer does not feel
overwhelmed
This point of sale is for Hugo Boss and its in the Hugo Boss
store in canary wharf. When the potential customer walks
in the shop they meet this point of sale on the counter. The
person walks up to the point of sale as the light from the
bottom attracts the customers in.
The customer then looks at the products and sprays it on
there hand. However for most customers there is to much
of a variety to choose from and they don’t stand there
looking at all of them as they tend to stop after about the
3rd bottle.
However some of the customers would be the ones who
have had the product before and already know the brand.
For these customers they walk into the shop, walk, straight
up to the point of sale and pick up the bottle that they
know they like and buy that one. There for this point of sale
is more for the people who already know what they want.
PERSON AND PRODUCT
INTERACTION
This is a point of sale for Armani which was in Harvey
Nichols. This point of sale was in the Armani section of the
shop on a counter. When a customer see’s this they go
over to it and pick one of the bottles to look at( the bottles
are in pairs so if a person is looking at one that you want to
look at as well then you can). The person then sprays it on
themselves to test it and if they like it then they will
purchase it.
However there are a lot of products on display and an
average customer would not stand there going through all
of them as after the 1st two they would not be able to smell
the product as the smell of the previous bottle would be
there. Therefore the customer is more likely to know the
brand and know what product they want before going up
to the point of sale as some customers went over and
picked up one of the bottles, sprayed it once and then
walked off with the packaged product of the same one the
had smelled. So you can see that this point of sale is more
for a customer who knows the brand therefore it does not
need to have bright colours to draw the customer in
because it targeting a customer it already has.
Hackett over the years has made a mark in the market. the brand
Hackett is know all over the country. This is its biggest strength, the
fact that it is so big. Hackett has a huge clothing range which has
many different products on offer. Also Hackett is known for its style as
it is old London and for the more traditional man. This is its biggest
strength as the older styles are now coming back in to fashion which is
grate news for Hackett. There modern yet back to the past style
makes a man look sophisticated which is why business wise they are a
grate brand to go with.
MARKET RESEARCH
STRENGTH
WEAKNESS
The biggest weakness that Hackett has Is the marketing of there male grooming products. Where
there competitors, such as Hugo boss and dun hill, market there male grooming products in the
shops and on there website Hackett does not. On the Hackett website you are un able to purchase
male grooming products and in the shops as well you are unable to buy there male grooming
products such as after shave. This is there huge weakness as it puts a big hole in the marketing
strategy as Hackett is all about style and looks yet you are unable to purchase anything to help you
with this. Also this puts there advertising down as well because in al the adverts the men have styled
hair yet they do not allow you to by the male grooming products to allow you to do so yourself, this
means that people will start to think that they are saying if you want to have the Hackett style then
you need to buy another product to do so which is then feeding there competitors with the
customers they could have if they showed off there male grooming range.
KEEP AND SCRAP
My first thoughts when I looked at this point of sale was that I thought
it was good. It drew my attention very well as it was the first thing I
saw was the point of sale. It works well because it displays the
products well and has a good range of products without being
overwhelming to the customer. Also it clearly shows the brand which
is good because it lets the customer know what he is buying.
Keep:
This point of sale is good. I like the layout of it and I think it would be
good to incorporate in my design. Also I think that not having large
sides to the point of sale as it gives the customer more visibility fro a
grater distance.
Scrap:
I would not use this point of sale for size because I feel it is a bit small
and the features on it aren't very good. Also I would not use the
materials that has been used in this as they do not reflect on the
Hackett brand.
My first thoughts on this point of sale was positive. It drew my
attention well with the colours used and it stood out because of the
size and when it was placed as it was in the foot fall of the customers.
I did think however that it was bad that there was not a product on
the point of sale which does defeat the point of the point of sale.
Keep:
I like the colour scheme of this point of sale and how it relates to the
brand, therefore I think I will use the Hackett brands colours in my
point of sale so that it relates to the brand. Also I think it is a good
idea that where the product is it is light up to put emphasis on the
product which is good because it draws the customers attention o the
product.
Scrap:
I do like the size of this point of sale however I do not think that I
would use the size of this in my design as I feel it would not be
affective for Hackett. Also I do not like the material that has been
used as it is basic and I feel that this material does not show the brand
well.

RESEARCH
Ascetics:
This point of sale is good because it has a simple design but a good one as it shows the brand and holds the product . Also it does not have any
bright colours but the lighting around the point of sale makes it stand out so that the customer is attracted to it.
Cost:
This point of sale wouldn’t be very expensive as it is not to big and it sits on a counter which means it does not use as much material. Also the
material isn't very expensive and it is a simple design that is easy to construct.
Customer:
The customer this point of sale is aimed at are between the ages of 22 and 35 (close to that of Hackett). This would also be targeted at all people
that are between the ages and not just the people that know the brand. This is because there isn't loads of products on display which means that
anyone can look and decide without thinking a lot about it.
Environment:
This point of sale was in Harvey Nichols in the men's department. It was in the pal zileri section with the other products that they do. it was in the
middle of the counter where it is visible for customers that look around this section of the shop. This means it is more likely for the customer to
make a purchase because they can see the point of sale easily where ever they stand.
Size:
This point of sale is small as it does not have to stand on its own because it is on a counter. Also it only shows 4 different products which means it
does not have to be to big to show this. Also the sides aren't big which means that it gives more visibility to the customer.
Safety:
This point of sale is safe because it dose not have any sharp corners and the materials are not dangerous which means they can cause no harm to
the customer. Also in Harvey Nichols there is an employee in each section which means that if you was going to cause yourself any danger then
they would step in and stop it.
Function:
This point of sale works well as it clearly shows the brand it is selling which is good as it tells the customer what they are buying and also it holds 4
products to test as well as the same products to test but packaged but ready to buy if the customer makes a decision. This makes it easier for the
customer to buy the product.
Materials:
This point of sale hasn’t been made of high end materials which means that it does not cost a lot. This point of sale look like it is made from
acrylic, this is because it comes in black which means they would not have to paint it. Also I think this because there are no curves on the point of
sale it is all square.
Ascetics:
This point of sale is for Armani and it Is in Harvey Nichols. this point of sale is not very good because although it does say the brand it does not show it clearly. Also it is a
very basic design as it has no sides or back and bottles that are out don’t have a designated place to sit they are just placed anywhere. Also the point of sale does not
have any colour to it apart form the products themselves but what makes customers notice this point of sale is the lighting around it as it reflects off the products and
the base of the point of sale making it hard to miss.
Cost:
The cost of this point of sale, although small, would be a high price for what you are actually buying in relation to the size because of the material that has been used.
However it still isn't an expensive point of sale because of the size and design.
Customer:
This point of sale is aimed at people that already know the brand Armani as it does not give a lot of information. Also it has a lot of products to choose from which
means that if you did not know which one you wanted then it is unlikely that a customer to go through all of the products to find one that they like.
Environment:
This point of sale was in Harvey Nichols in the Armani section of the shop. This point of sale sits on the edge of a counter which means you would have to walk round it
to see all of the other products Armani does. This is good as it means that the customer has easy access to the products that are being shown on the point of sale.
Size:
This point of sale is very small and does not have a very good design because it is only got a base and nothing else. This is bad because it does not stand out very well
which means although it is made bright by the lights it does not look appealing to the customer which would draw them away.
Safety:
This point of sale it very safe because it has no sharp edges and there is not a lot of the design that the customer could be affected by because the design is so basic.
Function:
This point of sale is good and bad for its function. On one hand it is good because it has the product the is being sold on display for the potential customers to see
it, however it does not clearly show the brand unless you get close and look at it where as you should be able to tell the brand from a distance.
Materials:
This point of sale is only made of aluminium. This is good as it means that it is strong, however the design of the point of sale is bad which means that the material that
they have used is pointless as they could of put the products on the counter and still had the same affect as the point of sale is giving.

Ascetics:
This point of sale was in boots and it is for Calvin Klein. This is a good point of sale because it is big and has a large picture of a man that draws you
in. also it has a demanding colour to it which gets the customers attention and draws them in.
Cost:
The cost of this point of sale would be reasonable for the size and material of the point of sale. It is quite large which would put the price up
,however it would not affect if massively as in relation to the brand and product it is reasonable.
Customer:
The customer that would be attracted to this point of sale are males between the ages of 25 to 30. this is good because this is the target
audience for this product. This is a good point of sale as the target customer would be drawn in by the colours (blue for boys) and the man would
draw them in as they would see him and think that they want to look like that.
Environment:
This point of sale was In boots in Bromley. It was placed at the top of an escalator which is good because it means it is in the foot fall of the
potential customers. Also its good because it means you can not miss it which means that you are almost garneted a sale every day just because
of where it has been placed.
Size:
This point of sale is big. It stands about 6 feet which means it is very eye catching. The actual product that you test sits on a shelf that is waist
height. The shelf it light up where the product sits which is good because it makes the product more bold which stands out more. Also what is
good it that it is tall but not wide so it doesn’t take up much space so the customer can still move round it with ease.
Safety:
This point of sale is very safe. It has not got any sharp edges that could be harmful to the customer and the material that it is made out of is not
dangerous as it is not very hard.
Function:
This point of sale works very well as it does its job well. It not only clearly shows the brad , but also shows the name of the product that is being
shown. Also it is very eye catching due to the size, colour and picture that has been put into the design of the point of sale. As well as the light
the makes the actual product stand out more that it would already do.
Materials:
The material is basic on this point of sale. It is made out of cardboard and acrylic which does work well for this point of sale because it mean s It is
easy to put together and is light weight which means that it can be moved easily. Also the material is good because it means that they could print
the picture on rather than sticking it on. This is good because it means it looks like it all blends together.
Ascetics:
This point of sale is good because it has the brand name clearly shown and it stands out because it is bright. Also the design is simple but good because it shows off the brand but still
maintains the good looking affect that the point of sale is giving.
Cost:
The cost of this product would be quite high because of the brands name and the materials that it is made of. However it would of cost even more if it was a larger point of sale but
because it is quite small this keeps the cost down.
Customer:
The customer for this point of sale would reflect on the brand which would be between the ages of 20 to 35 (the same as Hackett) not only that, the customer would be someone
who knows the brand and knows which product they want which means they would not need to smell each one to find one that they like. This is because of the range of products
given in this point of sale.
Environment:
This point of sale was in the Hugo Boss shop in Canary Wharf. It was on the counter near where you pay which means it is visible buy potential customers. It was also placed at the
end on the counter which means that customers would walk past it when they are walking around the shop, this means that a customer would notice it while they shop which means
that it has been put in a good position.
Size:
This point of sale is quite small but only because it doe not need to be big. It sits on a counter which means it is at a good height and therefore does not need to be bigger and it can
hold a good amount of products which also means it does not need to increase in size.
Safety:
This point of sale is safe because it has no sharp edges which means that it cant cause any harm to a customer. The only danger that you might have is that is it quite hard and heavy
for its size because of the materials that are used in the point of sale, but unless you drop it or It falls on a customer it this would not be a problem.
Function:
This point of sale is good because it clearly shows the brand clearly and it also holds a lot of products which you can clearly see. Also this is good because it has a big panel ,where the
products sit, that is light up which makes the products stand out a lot more drawing the customer in.
Materials:
This point of sale is for a high end brand and the materials reflect that. This point of sale is made from glass and metal. These are expensive materials for a point of sale which shows
how big the brand is. Not only that, but the finishing of the materials make the point of sale look better and more attractive to look at.

Things I want to incorporate in to my final design.
 My final design should be a reasonable size so that it would be
easy for the customer to notice my PofS but not be overwhelmed
by it.
 My final point of sale should reflect the brands material by using
materials that they have used, such as wood and metal.

Hackett has grown from a stall on London’s Portobello Road to a global
brand, founded by Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings in 1983. The
company gradually expanded over several years, increasing the number of
branches in the UK including Jermyn Street, Regent Street, East cheap and
Covent Garden.
Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings meet in the Portobello
Road, West London both combing the market for good second-hand
traditional British men’s clothing. A business partnership is soon started
with a small stall in Portobello themselves, selling on the clothing after
cleaning and repairs.
Hackett has now expanded to include several prime cities in Europe. Hackett
sponsors world sporting events, organisations and companies with tailored
clothing and accessories designed and sold in connection with existing
sponsorships including Aston Martin, the British Army Polo Team and the
London Rowing Club. In 2009, Hackett became the official clothing supplier
to the Oxford University and Cambridge University boat race fortifying it’s
British heritage.

The first thing I looked at was how the base would look and how it
would reflect the brand. This is the process I went through to find the
best design.
The first design idea that I had for the base was to just
make a base plate and then attach the main pole on to it
using a screw. However when I went to design it I
found a problem. The main problem that I found was
that using one screw is not very affective as it did not
hold the main pole very well and it seemed to flimsy
and would not be very well if it had got knocked.
I then changed the original base design to improve it. To
make the base more stable I added a ring around the
main pole that would help to hold it in place more.
Although this idea did seem to help make the pole less
unstable, it was still very unstable and was easily
knocked over. I then re-made it but made it taller so that
it supported the main pole more.
To further help the problem I then re-designed it by
extending the ring so that the main pole just slots in.
this made it much more stable and meant that I did not
need to attach the main pole to the base as it would just
slot in, making it easy to assemble when it arrives at the
shop.
A problem that I had with my base, after I developed
it, was that the shape of the socket that the main pole
slotted into did not represent the brand Hackett. I then
had to re-think the design to do the same job but reflect
the brand that I am doing.
To do this I made it so that it was more of a cone shape
that it slotted into which made the design look like it all
fits together and that it flows as one constant section.
(compared to the original witch just looked like shapes
placed on top of each other).
The next thing I looked at was the material that I looked at for my base parts.
The main material that reflects my brand is wood. Therefore I looked at the
different types of wood that I could use.
The first wood I looked at was pine. I looked at how easy it was to work with and
thought about if t reflected the brand Hackett enough. Pine was a good choice as
it is a hard wood which means it is naturally strong and it also has a nice, natural
colour to it. To test how easy it was to work with I took peace of pine and cut it
down to a square block. I then drilled two holes through it and then shaped one
of the corners so that it was curved. This was very easy to do with pine. This was
good as it gave me an idea as to how pine is. However, it did not really have the
colour of Hackett to it, but I could always add a finish to the wood to make it look
more like Hackett.
The second wood I looked at was oak. I, again, looked at how easy it is to work
with by cutting it down, drilling it and then sanding down and shaping one of
the edges. Oak was a bit more difficult to work with than pine but like pine it is a
hard wood, which again means it has natural strength. Also oak has a grain that
does represent Hackett as oak it considered to be a traditional, old fashion wood.
Oak its a good wood, its ok to work with and it does represent Hackett with its
grain. However, it would still need to be finished so that it would make it slightly
more like Hackett.
He final wood I looked at was American white oak (AWO). I did the same as I did
with the other woods I looked at. I cut the peace of AWO that I had, drilled it and
sanded and shaped one of the corners to see how easy it was to work with. It was
about the same, work wise, as normal oak. Again it is a hard wood so it is naturally
strong and the grain does represent Hackett very well. This wood be a good wood to
use as I can work with it relatively easy as it shows the brand well. However if I was
to use this wood I would probably add a finish to maybe make it a bit darker but other
than that it is a really good wood. Also it is a resalable cost for Hackett.
Out of all the woods I have looked at I think I will use American white oak as, out of all three
woods, it shows the brand well.
Now that I have an idea as to what wood I am going to use to make the base parts. I now have
to look into and decide how to make each part of the base. Because of the dimensions of the
wood that is available I have to join planks of wood together and then cut it out in order to
make the design.
The part I thought I should think about first is how I would make the base as the design I
had is quite large and rounded but the peace's of wood we get are in planks. I thought that
the best way to start the process of making the base plate would be to assemble the planks
of wood so that I was able to get the shape that I needed out of them.
The first way I thought of doing this would be to pile the planks on top of each other to make a
square base and then attach them together. This was good as I got he size that I wanted. However
it was weak as all the planks of wood where going the same way which means that if it was ever
under pressure that was parallel to the planks then it would more than likely brake at the joints.
I then decided to join them a different way. I took my inspiration for this idea from the way plywood is set
up. Plywood has lots of sheets of wood that lay on top of each other, like I am trying to achieve, but they
are placed so that the grain of the sheet of wood is crossed, this makes it stronger and less likely to warp.
So for my design I thought I would do the same with the planks of wood. I will lay the planks of wood
next to each other to make up the size and then put the top layer on so that it crosses. This would make
the base stronger and it would enable me to make it to the specifications that I have. This is how I will
start the process of making the base plate of my design as it is strong and simple to make.
Now that I have looked into laying out the
base plate, I am now going to focus on how
to do this in the easiest way whilst making
sure that it is strong.
One way of joining all of the planks together was by using a tongued joint. This would be a
good joint to use as it will work well with the planks of wood and it also allows me to work on
the wood while it is joined. However when I tried to make this joint it was hard to do with the
size of the wood that I was using. So I thought I would find another way of producing the base
plate.
Another way I thought of on how to join the planks of wood is to glue them together. This
would be a good way as the glue would mean that less work will be needed to make the square
block which means I would have more time to shape it and make it into the shape for my base.
The only thing that would make it difficult is to hold the wood in place but I could get around
this by making a frame or using a jig to hold it all in place while it dry's. however once it all
dry’s it would be slightly harder to shape as it is difficult to cut with glue that if there wasn’t
any glue, but it does not hold a very big problem, therefore I think I will use glue to hold it
together in my final design.
Now I am looking at making the cone
part of the base.
To make the cone part of the base I looked at different ways
to do it. One way was to make it the same way as the base
plate and stack the wood until I have a shape which I can
work with to get my design out of it. This would be good as
I already know how to do it as I would have done it for the
base plate. However it would take time to wait for the glue
to dry as I would have to wait for both parts of the base to
dry before I can start to make them. This is a good way of
doing it but I continued to look to see if I can make it
another way.
Another way of making the cone would be to start with a solid peace of
wood and then get the cone shape from that. This would be easier than
using glue as the process of making it would quicker as I could just start
shaping and not have to wait for the glue to dry ,which makes the
manufacturing process longer and therefore making the cost of the point of
sale cheaper. The only problem I would have is getting the solid block of
American white oak that I need, however I am able to get a solid block of
normal oak ,but this would mean that the two parts of the base would be a
different material.
To have the two base parts a different material wouldn’t be ideal but it
would be something to consider depending on the finishing of the wood
and what they look like together. (seen on the next page)
I then looked at how I was going to finish the wood for the base
parts. I looked at what reflects the brand the best and also what
looks the base.
The first way I looked at finishing the wood on the base is by painting it. I
chose to look at paint because it means that I could change the colour
completely to make it look more like Hackett. I tried this by painting a peace of
American white oak and see how it looked. I looked at how the paint stayed on
the wood after I put it under work (not that I would do work on a peace of
wood that had been painted but it was to see how long it would last), how it
makes the wood looked and if it looks good enough for the brand.
The second finish I looked at was a wood varnish. Wood varnish would be
good as you can get light and dark varnish's and also it adds to the properties
of the wood (i.e. making it more resistant to water). I looked at the same things
that I looked at for the paint finish (such as how it looks, how it lasts and if it
reflects the brand Hackett well). I did this by getting a block of the wood and
applying it to the wood.
I then started to think about how I would make the base plate of me design and what tools
and machines I would use.
The first thing I would need to do would be to cut up the planks of wood to the
size that I need them to be. The ban saw is a good machine as it cuts through
wood fast and its big which means I am not limited to the size of wood I can use.
After I cut the planks down to size, I will use a jig of a frame to hold all of the
peace's of wood together so that when the glue dry's the wood is in the position I
want it.
After the glue is set I will need to cut and shape the wood into the base plate that I
have designed. I will use the ban saw, the same as in the first stage, and then
smooth down the finish's shaping and smoothing down the wood until it resembles
my design
Now that I have decided what the base is made of and how it is
made, the next thing I looked at was how to join the base that I have
designed with the cone.
The first way of joining the two designs that I looked at was gluing them. I
thought that I could glue the two together with araldite. This is because
araldite it very strong and it would be able to hold the two together very
well. However, using glue does not reflect the brand that I am doing as it can
be seen to be a bit tacky. Therefor I had to look at other ways to attach the
two parts.
I looked at another way of joining the two parts together. I tried to joining them
like one bid dowel joint where the actual cone has a part coming from the bottom
(this would be like the dowel) and then it would slot into thee base as it would
have an indent so that the dowel can be slotted in. it was quite difficult to make
this as it was hard to make the dowel part under the cone and it was not very
stable. I then explored other ways I could do it.
I then thought of attaching them with nails. This would be like the dowel only the
nails would be the dowel. This was very easy to do and it worked well as it held
them together strongly and it was hidden as it was underneath the
design, however you are able to tear it off if you put force into it and it would need
more than one nail to hold it firmly.
Although using nails was good as it was simple and very affective. I felt
that I could find some way of joining the two a better way and that
would be even more affective. I therefore looked at holding them
together with screws. This had the same affect as the nails as it was
strong and held the two together well. Also it was slightly better than
using nails as its teeth made it more stronger and durable. I therefore
think I will use to attach the two parts.
Now that I have decided on all the manufacturing parts of the
base plate and the cone I will now look at size for both parts.
The height of the

also a good size at it can have a
decent and noticeable angle to it
to make it look more like the
brand.
I then decided to look at the torso part of my design and
focused on weather or no to stick with making it like a
ribcage. For this I looked at some different mannequins. I
looked at some designs of mannequins that already exist to
see if I should base my design on one of them.
The first one I am looking at is a simple design. It just
consists of one main block that is the torso and nothing
else. This is a simple design to do but it is very basic
and I think that the rib cage design that I had was
better because it is more complex and looks better. Also
this mannequin does not really show the brand Hackett
as it is to simplistic where as Hackett is a bit more out
there.
The second design I looked at was not as simplistic as
the first one. The torso is simple but then the joints that
attach the arms are good as they allow them to move
and be positioned to how you want. I think that the rib
cage design I had is better suite for the brand that I am
going to do as this design for the torso is a bit to
simplistic, however I will try to incorporate the idea of
the arms being able to move as I think this would be
good for my design.
The final design I looked at was very good. It was more
complexes than the others and it did look really good.
However it is a design for a mechanical mannequin
which I would not want to do as it does not reflect the
brand I am doing. On the other hand the design does a
little bit. However I still think that the best thing I
could do is the rib cage design that I had at the
start, but I will incorporate parts of this design (such as
the plates) as they would help bring my design together
and it would help with the mechanism that is going to
be fitted.
Now that I have decided on the rib cage design I am going to look at what shape I
should make it and if I should incorporate the panels into the design (as I said on
the last page).
The first shape I looked at for the ribcage was the one that was
on my concept of the design. On the concept they where a
rounded design. Originally I thought that this would be good as
it would be easy to make as I would only need to use one peace
off wood for one rib and also the process that I would go through
to make it would have been easy. However I then started to think
that making it rounded would look to simple. I therefor went on
to look at other ways I could shape it.
I then looked at the ribs being more flat at the back to get more of a rib look, this
was good as it made the bib wider which would make the suit fill out more to make it
look better. However it also made it look a bit wired as it went from a completely
straight back to then just a rounded front with no middle point. This then made is
look less like the style of the brand as it did not flow where as Hackett is more about
everything fitting together to look like one smooth shape.
So I then developed it further by changing the shape of the rib
design. I made it so that it was more sectioned so that when the
suit is on the design it would look more natural and also with it
being in sections the rib design looked like I flowed more which
then made it look more like the Hackett design. Also the process
is not as long a the original rounded design which then makes it
cheaper to manufacture.
Now that I had the shape of the rib, I then looked into actually making it to see how I would do
it and to bring up any problems I might face.
When I was looking at the shape of the design, I came across a problem. When I smoothed
dove the edges it was difficult to sand down the inside of the rib with the belt sander, this
meant I have to do it by hand which took much longer to do. this would then make the
manufacturing cost go up as it took more time to do. I then looked into different ways I could
solve the problem.
One way I thought of to get over this problem was to make the
inside of he rib stick out more so that it would be easier to sand.
This would of helped my problem but then it would change the
shape of my design which was not good as I had already decided
that on the shape for the rib that most reflected the brand
Hackett. Therefore I had to re-think a solution to the problem.
I then decided to look started to think that if the ribs are cut to
look like they are in sections then I could cut them into those
sections. That way I can make sure that each peace is right and
there is less chance for an error to occur in the making process.
Also it means that it would add to the effect that each peace is
coming together to make a shape that flows smoothly. This
was good as it meant I could keep the new shape that I had
decided on and keep it in the style of Hackett whilst giving a
solution to the problem that I was facing.
So now I am going to make the rib into sections and then join
them to make up the rib.
Now that I have the idea for the rib design, I can now start to look at the
material that I can use.
There are 3 materials I looked at for the ribs, 2 woods
(American white oak and oak) and acrylic. Acrylic is a good
material to use as you can design something on the computer
and then lazier cut that design in the lazier cutter. This would
be good for me as it has lots of parts to it which means it would
make it easier for me to make my design in acrylic. Also acrylic
an be easily joined together using an adhesive called araldite.
However acrylic does not reflect the brand Hackett as it is not
a very traditional material and it is not up market, where as
Hackett is.
The second material I looked at was one of the two
woods. I looked at oak because it is more up market and
it is a very traditional material. Oak is good to work
with and you can apply many different finishes. Also
there are many joints that I could use with oak to join
the different sections.
The final material that I looked at was American white oak
(AWO). This is very similar to normal oak but it has a different
colour grain. This relates to Hackett more than oak as it has a
more traditional look to it. Also you could add varnish to finish
it. This would also be a good material as it is the same material
that I am using for the base, this would add consistency to my
design. I therefore think I will use this for the making for the
ribs of my design.
Now that I know how I am going to construct the ribs in the rib cage. I
thought I should look at how I would actually join each individual section of
the rib to the other.
I will design the ribs like this because it has many features to it. For
example, with this design it make the design able to move with the suit.
This then shapes it more and gives across a better affect. This however
means that it will take a long time to make all the sections of the rib.
Therefor it would be a better idea if I use acrylic to make the ribs as all the
sections can be drawn and cut out using CAD and a laser cutter. I would
then only have to line up and glue the sections.
Because I am making the ribs out of acrylic. I
need to make them thicker. To do this I will
layer the acrylic, this means that it is thicker
and also it means that it will be easier to join
them the way I want.
The way I would join them would be to make a finger joint using the
layers of the acrylic. I would then drill a hole through the 3 sections that
link together and then ,using an aluminium rod, I will then join them
together. This still allows them to move.
This is how I will shape one end of the rib
(depending on what part it is). This shape allows it
to move and pivot in one direction (this would be
moving in to make the shape of the rib). Also this
design means it can not be moved the wrong way as
the shape of it will not allow it.
I had to think of some way to
allow it to pivot and then go back
to how it was, this would also
have allow it to push out on the
suit that would be over it to
make it look more like a persons
chest. To do this I will make it so
that there is a grove on the
outside of the rib which I will
then put an elastic band around it
to allow it to retract when the
tension it taken away from it.
Now that I know how my rib cage it going to be consisting of, I thought I
should look into the process of how I will make sections of the rib
First I shall draw out the ribs using the computer and then send it to the
laser cutter to be cut out to the dimensions that I need them to be.
I would then drill holes into the parts that need drilling using the pillar
drill.
After all the holes have been drilled I shall then glue all the peace's
together to make the different sections of the rib using araldite.
I will then put an aluminium rod through the hole to secure the different
sections together. After I have done this I will attach it to the main body
and then apply the elastic band to the design.

I have not spoken about the size of the whole design, I have only
stated each individual part of the design.

This will be what the customer sees
from my point of sale as there will be a
suit over the mannequin. This is good
as it will make it look more like
Hackett. Also this is also the tester. In
the top pocket of the blazer there will
be a hankie which will be scented with
the fragrance. The customer will the
take the hankie to smell it and they
will be able to take it and use it as
their own ( doing this is good as it
makes the customer like the brand as
they are getting something for free)
from pulling out the hankie that is on
show, it will also pull out with it the
next hankie slightly so that it is on
show for the next customer. (this will
be like how a tissue box works in that
the tissues are folded into each
other, this will be the same concept)
To do this I will make the top pocket
bigger on the inside so that it can fit a
large amount of hankies inside it
without showing to much from the
outside.
I looked at how the pole would be attached
to the base plate and the cone of my design.
At first I looked at glues but then I decided
that it would be better if it just slotted in as
the height of the cone is tall enough for it to
do so without falling out and it will still be
stable. This it a good way of doing it as it
means that the point of sale can be delivered
in parts and then be put together on site
easily and allowing the shop assistant to put
it together without any struggle.
To make sure that it is able to be slotted in
and out easily and it lands carefully when it
hits the bottom I will put a peace of
acrylic, the same size radius as the base of
the pole, in side the cone and on the base of
the pole. These two peace's will then meet
when the pole it put in so that it is a softer
touch and it will also protect the wood if it is
pushed down too violently.
I looked at how the ribs would be attached
to the main pole.
The most affective way of doing this would
be to indent the main pole (like a female
mould) and then make a bit on a section of
the rib that sticks out (like a male mould)
and then slot them together.
To make it a bit more secure I
thought it would be a good idea
to use small magnets. One in
the rib section and one in the
indent on the main pole. This
just means that it is a bit more
secure than what it would be.
I will put a peace of
transparent acrylic over
the magnet on the rib so
that it will make it easier so
separate yet still hold the
two sections together well.
To do the elastic idea for the rib cage I will make the middle section of the rib
smaller in width. This will give the elastic a groove to go down. Also when it gets
to the end point of the rib I will then leave out the curved part in the middle section.
This means that the elastic band can go into this gap, then once the aluminium rod
goes in it can go through the middle of the elastic band. This will secure it and
make it so that the elastic band will move all the rib.
I thought of making my rib design in the shape of the rib of a person.
However this would be very time consuming as it would mean I would
have to make each rib differently. However with the elastic around the
outside of the rib it allows them to move and take the shape of the shirt
and blazer that will go over it. This means that I can make the ribs all
the same, which will be easier in the manufacturing process, and it will
still look realistic when the shirt is on.
Each rib is going to be made as a 1/3 of
its final height(this is the same height
as one sheet of acrylic). Once all 3
peace's of one section of rib is made I
will then glue them together.
There are two different shapes that the
rib has. One has a grater angle than the
other. This is because if it was all the
same it would make the rib round
where as I need it to be more of an oval
shape. Therefor the angle that the ribs
are will be different on some of them (as
you can see on the left).
I was going to put the product on the suit
some how. However I thought it would be
better if it just sat at the top of the main
pole. For this I would then have to make
sure the pole sticks out enough so that the
product can be placed there. This is good as
it means that the product will be in the eye
line of the customer as the pole will be 5ft
7in tall. This will then make sure that the
customer knows what they are testing.
To finish my design I
thought I could put a peace
of black acrylic on top of
the pole as a platform for
the product to sit on.
Next I looked at how the suit would sit on
the mannequin. I have thought about the
chest part but not about the shoulders. The
most simplest way to do this would be to
make a hanger type design and then attach it
to the main pole above the ribs. That way
the suit would sit on the hanger and the ribs
would then take shape, making it look more
realistic.
To do this I think it would be better if I just
got a wooden hanger and then take the hook
off of it. Then I can just attach it to my
design through a cut that I will make going
through pole.
As the pole is not big enough for the neck of the
shirt (which is approximately 15.5” round) I will
make something that is so that is. The best way
of doing this would be to cut out a peace of acrylic
which is that size (it will be in the shape of a ring)
I will make two of them so that it is taller and
fills the collar more.
Using aluminium rods I will join this to the
main pole. I will attach one end to the ring
and then drill a hole into the pole for the rod
to slot into.
Next I looked at displaying the product for
customers to buy.
I thought that the best way to do this is to
have a shelf on the mannequin. I thought the
best place to put this would be just under the
suit.
I wanted the shelf to fit the rest of the design so I
made it in the shape of one of the rib sections but
filled in on each half. (this would again be made from
3 layers of acrylic)
However due to the fact that this is going to
be put under pressure as there will be things
on it I thought I could reinforce it with
aluminium rods. These will go from the
curved parts at the end on the shelf to the
main pole at a slight angle (going up from
the main pole) this means that it will stop
the shelf from dropping down.
After I made a model of the hanger part of
my design I tested It out with a blazer and a
shirt..
After trying it out I realised that the neck
part I originally designed was not necessary
and that it wouldn’t work. However, I still
needed something to hold the front of the
collar up a bit to make it more realistic.
This new design will work in the same way.
It will be out enough to make it so that the
collar looks like it is filled and it will slot
into a hole that is in the main pole. I twill be
using this design out of the 2 for the neck
part of my design.

MARKETING
PLAN OF MAKING/
CUTTING LIST
This is my plan of making so that I know what week I am making
what part. This chart tells me when I am suppose to be making a part
of my design and i am able to refer back to it to see if I am still on
track. One of the boxes is “finishing touches”, this is where I go back
over my whole design and make sure that I have covered everything
that I needed to, put the suit over the design and add the bottle and
testers onto it.

Some of the rows have “ N/A” in all the boxes. I have done this because
these are the parts that I changed when it came to making my design.
All of the changes made had good reason and have been mentioned in
the evaluation.
For my design, there where many points
where I had to measure out parts to make
each bit the same. Some of these are shown
in the pictures bellow.
I used this jig to make sure that each hole in
the ribs where in the same place.
I measured out each bend with a ruler so
that each bend was the same length.
I marked out how big the cuts had to be on
the legs so that they where all the same.
QUALITY CONTROL
CHECKS
There where some problems that various
users of my product noticed whilst it was in
use. I took all these problems and came up
with a solution so that the users and
customers where happy with the product.
One of the problems that a user had with my
design was that where the ribbed section
slotted into the main pole, it made the shape
of the suit look unrealistic and thought it
would be better if it was all flush with the
main pole.
To fix this problem I decided to make it so that the ribs did sit flush with
the main pole. To do this I had to change the design slightly, by cutting
the main pole in sections rather than just indent them. Then I drilled a
hole through the rib and the main pole where it had been cut so that I
could join them with a dowel. This worked well as it meant that it was all
flush together and it also made it easier to apply the elastic, due the fact
that I was able to join it to the dowel rather than drilling another hole like
I had originally planed.
A problem that another user had was that
the base of my design made it so that the
design wasn’t very stable if there was a
bump in the floor of the floor was un-level.
They said that because it was just a flat
surface they was unable to adjust it to a
position where it didn’t rock side to side.
To fix this problem I decided to make it so that the design had legs rather
than just a flat based. This meant I had to get two peace's of wood and
make a finger joint type design and then secure them with an aluminium
rod. Then to make it so that it can adjust easy I attached a spring on the
inside of the leg so that they would adjust to make the design level. This
fixed the problem of the design being unstable and it also made it look
more complex.
Another problem that users brought up was
that when the suit was put on the
mannequin, the shoulders sat to far back and
made it look unrealistic and miss-shaped.
The reason for this was because the hanger
that was built into the design sat in the
middle of the main pole, where as it should
be more forward so that it gives the suit
more of a realistic shape.
To fix this problem that I was having, I changed it so that the hanger sat
more forward on the main pole. To do this I cut out a section from the
front of the main pole. Then I got an old cut off from the main pole, cut
and shaped it, and fixed it into the cut out section of the main pole, then
attach the hanger onto that part. This made the suit fit more forward, as it
was stuck out more, and made the shape of it look better and more
realistic.

I have not kept to this specification. The reason is because when I came to
put all of my design together I noticed that the shelf would be to low and it
would make my product less ergonomically to the user, therefor I decided to
leave it out.

interesting in the way that it looks and the style of it. Also, because it is a

sell, therefore, a customer that is interested in the suit on display will come

to incorporate. This is good as it means my design does not have any features that you
wouldn’t want to have on a PofS. For example, my design does not have any sharp edges
which could harm the customer and my design is not too complicated so that the
customer would be confused when they look at it. However, it does have some complexity
to the design so that it makes it look interesting.

The users have answered most of these in the other specifications, such as the information
that is on the product. However the users confirmed that the point of sale is no danger to
them as it has no sharp edges on it.

They said “it is a good size for what it is for, however to put it in the store we would

would be beneficial as we could use it as a regular mannequin as well as a point of
sale, which means we would be able to replace the mannequin that is already in
store”

I asked my client if they agreed with the materials that I used and if it reflected the
brand that I was doing. They said “ we do agree with the materials that you have
used, however we would, perhaps, prefer it if the rib cage was made of wood as we
feel that it would better suit the brand”. Although I will take this into
consideration, I think that this would be irrelevant as you would be unable to see the
rib cage once the suit is on.

My client said “ there isn't any complicated shapes on the design and id it simple to
assemble when it is delivered”. However, they did ask more about the ribs and why
they are made the way they are. I responded by saying “they ribs are the way they
are for two reasons. One is because it makes the design look more complex, the
second is because it allows you to change the size of he clothes on the mannequin
which allows you to display a range of sizes”.

went on to say that they liked how they where able to put their own suits on the

POINT OF SALE This point of sale was in M&S. this is a good point of sale as it clearly displays the product, it is eye catching to people (e.g. they just get a glimpse of it and they think it’s a person but then when they look again they realise and by this time the product is already in there mind), it gives you the name of the brand and all the items you can see are available next to this manikin. However, it does not give you vital information such as the price and the colour scheme is quite bland. This point of sale was in a jewellery shop in the glades. This is an example of a bad point of sale because of a though things. Firstly it offers no information about the product(i.e. price, brand etc.) also you are unable to go and actually pick it up in the shop you would have to get a member of staff( however this is understandable as it is probably expensive jewellery). However it does stand out with the features it has which do draw in customers. This is a point of sale in boots. I thought this was a very good point of sale as it is a good size and eye level for shoppers, it has good colours that encourage people to go over to it, also the person on it is staring at the customer which catches there eye and makes them turn around and look at it. It clearly shows the brand and has a picture of the product. However it does not show the price and the actual product is not on display( however you can see where it is suppose to be which ether means that it has run out and was being replaced of that it had been stolen as there was nothing attaching it to the point of sale. This is a point of sale in WHsmiths .this is a good point of sale as it has bright colours, it was in the middle of the shop and THE Sun is a well known newspaper. It has loads of product copies that you reach in and take. However this point of sale does not have the price of the product but because THE Sun is a well known newspaper people who buy the sun regularly would already know how much it costs therefor the price does not need to be on the point of sale as they are targeting there regular audience.
  • 3. POINT OF SALE This point of sale was in Boots. This is a good point of sale because it shows the brand clearly, it gives you the product that is being shown by the design of the point of sale and a lot of them, the design is eye catching as it is a big version of the product plus all the colours used in the point of sale draw the potential customer in. also it was in a good position as it was next to where people walked so they would have to walk past it were ether they go. This point of sale was in Whsmiths. This is a good point of sale because the brand, Coca-Cola, is shown clearly and also it is one of the most recognisable brands in the world and this helps the point of sale as people like what they already know about unlike new things which people can be curious about. This point of sale doesn’t show the price of the product in big as it does not just sell Coca-Cola, however if you do go up to it the price will be there under a Coca-Cola product. Even though this point of sale doesn’t just sell Coca-Cola does not make it bad as the other products add colour to it drawing more customers in and because the is ‘Coca-Cola’ written in large lettering at the bottom means that the more suggestible people are more likely to pick up a Coca-Cola product because it has been shown to them, even if they have not noticed the sign. This point of sale was in JD. This is a quite good point of sale because it stands tall ( if I was to guess about 6 feet) and has an interesting design which help draw customers as they want to look at it closely. It shows the brand well and has the product that they are selling on show, however it does not show the price of the product and although the design can bee a good thing, it also stops customers from seeing the product if they are not at the right angle. This point of sale was in JD. This point of sale is good because even though the actually unit is just white, it uses the colours of the different products to make customers notice it. It clearly shows the brand of the product, however it does not show the price apart from on a tad on each individual product. Also it does not sell a specific Lacoste product as it has two different types of tops that is on display. But the positioning of the product is good as it is very central to the shop floor which means it can be seen be customers nearly anywhere they stand in the shop.
  • 4. POINT OF SALE This point of sale was in Sports Direct. This is a good point of sale because there is loads of bright colours that stand out as well as a large picture (which you are unable to see all of it due to the picture) of the product which is also in bright colours. Also it has information on the boot as well as the price and brand of the product. However in order to get the product you must check to see for your size which means finding a member of staff (although due to the product this is required but they could find a way to make to easier for the customer). This point of sale was in Boots. This is a good point of sale because it shows the brand clearly, it gives you the product that is being shown by the design of the point of sale as it is an enlarged version of the product (similar to a point of sale on the previous sale) which stands tall which palls in the customers. However it does not show a price and although the colour is bright, gold normally puts people off as it some times look tacky. This point of sale was in a shop window in the glades. This is a good point of sale as it clearly shows the product and has models that would make people interested in the product. Also it shows prices under each product. However there is a lot of products on sale which means the customer would have to stand there deciding and it was at the bottom shelf which means the customer would have to keep bending over to look at the products. This point of sale was in Jack Jones. This point of sale is an example of a bad point of sale as it does not show the brand (unless u actually pick up the product and look at it more closely), it does not show the price on the product so you have to ask a member of staff. However the layout of the point of sale is quite good as it could interest customers to look at it, plus this display very big as it takes up the whole wall.
  • 5. Mr Natty is aimed at older men as it is a more of a mature brand for a man who knows what style he wants, therefore Mr Natty is the best brand for him as each product is for a specific look or style, unlike a younger male as they might still be experimenting with there hair style and trying new looks all the time. Also the web site gives you an indication as to who it is aimed at because it is more of an older style. MR NATTY POINT OF SALE This point of sale was in Boots. This is a good point of sale as it holds the products that they are trying to sell, it clearly shows the brand and the size is good as it is eye level. Also what is good about this point of sale is the design because the shape of it ensures a 180 degrees view point which means the cover a wide range of customers which means it has more of a chance of being noticed. This point of sale was in Boots. This point of sale is good as it shows the product and gives you an opportunity to try the product, it holds information on the product as well as the cost of the product and the brand. However it doesn’t really have any bright colours to draw customers in which means it is relying on the customer to spot the product rather than the point of sale drawing the customer in.

L'Oreal men expert would be for a wide range of age group’s as it appeals to many different needs, for example you can get styling products which would be for a younger male but you can also get products for older men such as a face wash or a hair product that reduces grey hair. Also the website in terms of age group is mutual as it doesn’t really go towards a certain age group and all the models on the web site ranges from younger men to older men. Because of this the age group would be between early 20s to late 40s. L’OREAL MEN EXPERT Old spice is a brand more for younger men as in the adverts it has strong men that look like they know what they want and younger men see this and say ‘I want to be like that’. However the classic version of old spice could be for 30 years old as they could look at the adverts and think ‘I want to be young and strong again’ and then they would go and buy this product. OLD SPICE
  • 7. Lynx’s is mainly aged at younger males because in most of the adverts there are men with attractive girls and then the moral is that if you wear links that person in the adverts could be you. This then makes the younger males want to buy it as they believe the advert. So this would be aimed at men from the ages of 13 to 17. also when you are this age you are not worried about getting grooming products to help you, for example men's moisturiser, because you just want to get things that make you look and smell good which is what links does as many to all of there products are to style and give you a sent. LYNX Fish is for a more younger generation because of the colour and type of bottle that they use and also the way they show that it is a styling product, which most of the younger generation are concerned with. Yet the way the web site is laid out more old fashion than the way the product has been made which gives it a sense that it joins the young with the old so it could also be aimed at a slightly older male but I do think that the majority of the consumer is of the younger generation.   • 8. Hackett is more of a brand for a man who wants to achieve but also who wants to look good. The style Hackett sells has got the business feel to it but also can be for a casual meet and greet which I think is that they have done with there male grooming range. Because of this I feel that it is aimed at men between the ages of 20 to 35 as those are the ages where men start undertake new opportunities in life and then keeping the opportunities you have gained to make a life for yourself. Also you would want a style that goes with these opportunities which is what is provided by the Hackett grooming brand. HACKETT

The point of sale needs to have an even blend of function and form so that the customer gets what he needs and stays entertained while looking at it so he doesn’t walk off. Visibility + Position  Eye level .  stand away from other point of sales.  Near the product that is being sold.  A place where potential customers would walk. The point of sale needs to be put in the right position so that it will be visible for the customer from most points in the shop in order to get the highest chances of drawing them in and making a sale. Target Market  Using colours the brand promotes.  Make it age appropriate.  Pictures the potential customer would link to the brand.  Put in it a place where the potential customers would be. Target marketing is important because it helps you get an understanding of the product and it also helps you to style you design. Materials  durable.  Robust.  Suitable for the area.  Have a good finish. The materials for the point of sale need to be considered as they can reflect on the brand. Ascetics (form + branding)  Must display branding features.  Bright colours.  Clear and easy to read information. This is very important to a point of sale as the look of the point of sale and the way it is shown to the public is how it gets customers to look at the product and in the long term make a sale. Sustainability  Must be able to last.  Can it be recycled. This is good in a point of sale because if it has sustainability which means that it will have a long term use which means it works as a point of sale. Safety  Must not have and sharp points.  Must be stable.  Assemble with out injury. Safety is key in a point of sale as it is going to be in a public place which means it can not cause harm to any of the customers otherwise it would not be able to be used as a point of sale if it is not safe. Environment  Must have suitable materials.  Must be friendly to the environment.  Must not look out of place. The point of sale must not look out of place otherwise people will notice it but mainly avoid it. Also it must be environmentally friendly in relation to materials used. Interactivity  Must be able to use the product.  Must not be able to steal the product.  Must not be able to get bored with the product. The point of sale must show the product clearly so that the customer is able to pick it up and test it, however they must not be allowed to take it to far from the product.. Also it must hold the customers attention long enough for them to familiarise them selves with the product. Social networking Construction  Must be simple to construct for the user.  Must be safe to construct.  Once constructed it must be able to stay constructed until it is no longer needed. The construction must be looked at when looking at a point of sale so that you can see if anyone can put it up or if it needs someone who knows what they are doing. When you know this you can then start to look at what shops would use your point of sale. Ergonomic Pricing  Must be reasonable to the cost of production.  Must affordable for the target market. The pricing of the point of sale must relate to the product and the materials used. This is important because if the pricing is wrong then the point of sale would not work. Future  Must last until it is no longer needed.  Would it be able to be reused or would it only be for one product.  Must be able to last in the market without going out of fashion. You need to think of the future of a point of sale because you can think more on the cost and materials you are going to use. TASK ANALYSIS

  • 12. The situation hat Hackett has is that it does not advertise there male grooming range well enough. This causes the customer to steer away from Hackett and go to a brand that is more easy to access such as links. To overcome this situation they need a point of sale that clearly shows the Hackett products to there customers so that they can access it easier. BRIEF SITUATION Design a new point of sale display for Hackett's male grooming range. The unit must display at least one of Hackett's ranges and must clearly show the Hackett brand. SITUATION & BRIEF
  • 13. Ascetics It must show the brand colour and the brand his self. The shape of the design and the logo is also needed as well as information. The pattern, style and images that may link to the brand also needs to be considered to the ascetics. Cost Must look at the cost of the actual point of sale and how much it costs to make it (that includes the material and manufacturing cost). Also consider if the material would be a high or low end cost. Customers It must target the right audience in the area and environment that the audience would be in. Also it must include ergonomics for the customer and has the right design to attract the customer. Environment where point of sale is going to be put and what is happening in the environment (e.g. the Olympics). Also you need to look at if the point of sale is environmentally friendly due to the materials used. Size Ergonomics must be considered in the size in correlation to the customer as well as looking at if the size is suitable for the function of the point of sale. Also look at the size in relation with materials and the cost of those materials. Safety It must be sturdy so it does not fall over and also it must be easy for the person to assemble the point of sale. You would also have to think about if you spray the product would anyone be affected because of allergies. A manger part to consider is the avoidable instances (e.g. if you are able to take the product away from the point of sale, someone decides to steal it, the member of staff then has to put themselves in danger and get it back). Function Must be able to show the brand of the product as well as show the actual brand. It must also give information on the product (e.g. price etc.) and must be able to test the product safely. Materials Must be using the materials that are relevant to the brand like wood, metal, glass and acrylic. But only use the materials if they relate to the brand. INITIAL SPECIFICATION

  • 17. Hugo Boss is a similar product to Hackett as both brands market the same things, its target marketing is the same and the style of there products is the same. Hugo Boss is a huge competitor to Hackett . The target audience is 20 to 35 year olds, the same as Hackett, but Hugo Boss is more of a modern man who looks to the future un like Hackett which is still modern style but with the past in mind as the customer prefers old London rather than Hugo Boss ‘s customer which prefers new London. Hugo Boss does show off there male grooming range more than Hackett because Hugo Boss has points of sales not only all there stores, but in others as well ,such as boots. Where as Hackett only shows off its male grooming range in only there main stores and not the smaller ones in London (for example the Hackett store in canary wharf does not market the male grooming range) this puts Hugo Boss above Hackett because if they market the product more then they make more sales. Dunhill is on the same page as Hugo Boss. its style is modern and it looks to the future the same as Hugo boss but the age range is a bit different to Hackett. Hackett’s targets market is 20 to 35 where as Dunhill's age range is more like 25 to 35 year olds as it is also a bit more mature than Hackett as there products they sell have an older gentlemen look to them. The way Dunhill shows its hale grooming products is better than Hackett as well as they have points of sales in there stores, however where Hackett's main selling point is both there clothing range and there male grooming products where as Dunhill focuses on the clothing and not much on there male grooming range, yet they do still market it more. COMPETITIVE PRODUCTS Pal Zileri is like Hackett in many ways. They both has similar age range, however Pal Zileri would be aged 25 to 35 where as Hackett is 20 to 35 . This means that it falls down to marketing there male grooming products. In marketing Pal Zileri does more as they advertise all of there male grooming range on there web site and in other shops as well as there own, where as Hackett's male grooming range is hard to come across as they do not show it in there web site or in there shops. The only difference is they have a slight difference in the style. Where Hackett is modern but looks to the traditional style, Pal Zileri is just modern and looks at what is happening not and continues to do so. Ben Sherman is a competitor to Hackett as its like its younger brother. Ben Sherman is a slightly younger age group to Hackett as it is ages 18 to late 20s, this is because it has different ranges that appeal to a younger audience. And ,although dealing with a similar style of clothing, Ben Sherman is slightly more affordable then Hackett, but not as high end as Hackett, which is where the divide is. The style that is similar is there modern approach as Ben Sherman looks at what is modern and what is now where as Hackett looks at modern but with a traditional look. Marketing wise Ben Sherman does more as there shops are more local, reaching out to a lower end of the market rather that Hackett which is mainly biased in London. Also Ben Sherman has more advertising and gets sold in other shops as well as there own where as Hackett is more exclusive, however the exclusiveness of Hackett is a good thing as it makes sure that Hackett stays in the high end of the market.
  • 18. This point of sale for Pal Zileri was in Harvey Nichols. This point of sale sat on a counter which had other products by the brand in (as you can see in the picture). When people go up to the point of sale, the first thing they do it pick up one of the bottles that is unpackaged. At this point there was a man who works for Harvey Nichols who talks to you about the product you just picked up, they tell you the price and there opinion of the product. Then the buyer sprays the product on there wrist and then smells it to see if they like it. Then three things can happen. There customer would ether like the smell and then pick up one of the packaged bottles at the back and then buys it, the customer moves on to ne next bottle till they find one they like and then they buy it, or they are not sure about the product so then the employee encourages you to take a booklet that has the products and more with the prices so that you are able to look at the product and maybe decide on it in a later date. That’s why I think that this point of sale is for the people who are not very familiar with the brand as there is not a huge variety to chose from so the customer does not feel overwhelmed This point of sale is for Hugo Boss and its in the Hugo Boss store in canary wharf. When the potential customer walks in the shop they meet this point of sale on the counter. The person walks up to the point of sale as the light from the bottom attracts the customers in. The customer then looks at the products and sprays it on there hand. However for most customers there is to much of a variety to choose from and they don’t stand there looking at all of them as they tend to stop after about the 3rd bottle. However some of the customers would be the ones who have had the product before and already know the brand. For these customers they walk into the shop, walk, straight up to the point of sale and pick up the bottle that they know they like and buy that one. There for this point of sale is more for the people who already know what they want. PERSON AND PRODUCT INTERACTION This is a point of sale for Armani which was in Harvey Nichols. This point of sale was in the Armani section of the shop on a counter. When a customer see’s this they go over to it and pick one of the bottles to look at( the bottles are in pairs so if a person is looking at one that you want to look at as well then you can). The person then sprays it on themselves to test it and if they like it then they will purchase it. However there are a lot of products on display and an average customer would not stand there going through all of them as after the 1st two they would not be able to smell the product as the smell of the previous bottle would be there. Therefore the customer is more likely to know the brand and know what product they want before going up to the point of sale as some customers went over and picked up one of the bottles, sprayed it once and then walked off with the packaged product of the same one the had smelled. So you can see that this point of sale is more for a customer who knows the brand therefore it does not need to have bright colours to draw the customer in because it targeting a customer it already has.
  • 19. Hackett over the years has made a mark in the market. the brand Hackett is know all over the country. This is its biggest strength, the fact that it is so big. Hackett has a huge clothing range which has many different products on offer. Also Hackett is known for its style as it is old London and for the more traditional man. This is its biggest strength as the older styles are now coming back in to fashion which is grate news for Hackett. There modern yet back to the past style makes a man look sophisticated which is why business wise they are a grate brand to go with. MARKET RESEARCH STRENGTH WEAKNESS The biggest weakness that Hackett has Is the marketing of there male grooming products. Where there competitors, such as Hugo boss and dun hill, market there male grooming products in the shops and on there website Hackett does not. On the Hackett website you are un able to purchase male grooming products and in the shops as well you are unable to buy there male grooming products such as after shave. This is there huge weakness as it puts a big hole in the marketing strategy as Hackett is all about style and looks yet you are unable to purchase anything to help you with this. Also this puts there advertising down as well because in al the adverts the men have styled hair yet they do not allow you to by the male grooming products to allow you to do so yourself, this means that people will start to think that they are saying if you want to have the Hackett style then you need to buy another product to do so which is then feeding there competitors with the customers they could have if they showed off there male grooming range.
  • 20. KEEP AND SCRAP My first thoughts when I looked at this point of sale was that I thought it was good. It drew my attention very well as it was the first thing I saw was the point of sale. It works well because it displays the products well and has a good range of products without being overwhelming to the customer. Also it clearly shows the brand which is good because it lets the customer know what he is buying. Keep: This point of sale is good. I like the layout of it and I think it would be good to incorporate in my design. Also I think that not having large sides to the point of sale as it gives the customer more visibility fro a grater distance. Scrap: I would not use this point of sale for size because I feel it is a bit small and the features on it aren't very good. Also I would not use the materials that has been used in this as they do not reflect on the Hackett brand. My first thoughts on this point of sale was positive. It drew my attention well with the colours used and it stood out because of the size and when it was placed as it was in the foot fall of the customers. I did think however that it was bad that there was not a product on the point of sale which does defeat the point of the point of sale. Keep: I like the colour scheme of this point of sale and how it relates to the brand, therefore I think I will use the Hackett brands colours in my point of sale so that it relates to the brand. Also I think it is a good idea that where the product is it is light up to put emphasis on the product which is good because it draws the customers attention o the product. Scrap: I do like the size of this point of sale however I do not think that I would use the size of this in my design as I feel it would not be affective for Hackett. Also I do not like the material that has been used as it is basic and I feel that this material does not show the brand well.
  • 22. Ascetics: This point of sale is good because it has a simple design but a good one as it shows the brand and holds the product . Also it does not have any bright colours but the lighting around the point of sale makes it stand out so that the customer is attracted to it. Cost: This point of sale wouldn’t be very expensive as it is not to big and it sits on a counter which means it does not use as much material. Also the material isn't very expensive and it is a simple design that is easy to construct. Customer: The customer this point of sale is aimed at are between the ages of 22 and 35 (close to that of Hackett). This would also be targeted at all people that are between the ages and not just the people that know the brand. This is because there isn't loads of products on display which means that anyone can look and decide without thinking a lot about it. Environment: This point of sale was in Harvey Nichols in the men's department. It was in the pal zileri section with the other products that they do. it was in the middle of the counter where it is visible for customers that look around this section of the shop. This means it is more likely for the customer to make a purchase because they can see the point of sale easily where ever they stand. Size: This point of sale is small as it does not have to stand on its own because it is on a counter. Also it only shows 4 different products which means it does not have to be to big to show this. Also the sides aren't big which means that it gives more visibility to the customer. Safety: This point of sale is safe because it dose not have any sharp corners and the materials are not dangerous which means they can cause no harm to the customer. Also in Harvey Nichols there is an employee in each section which means that if you was going to cause yourself any danger then they would step in and stop it. Function: This point of sale works well as it clearly shows the brand it is selling which is good as it tells the customer what they are buying and also it holds 4 products to test as well as the same products to test but packaged but ready to buy if the customer makes a decision. This makes it easier for the customer to buy the product. Materials: This point of sale hasn’t been made of high end materials which means that it does not cost a lot. This point of sale look like it is made from acrylic, this is because it comes in black which means they would not have to paint it. Also I think this because there are no curves on the point of sale it is all square. Ascetics: This point of sale is for Armani and it Is in Harvey Nichols. this point of sale is not very good because although it does say the brand it does not show it clearly. Also it is a very basic design as it has no sides or back and bottles that are out don’t have a designated place to sit they are just placed anywhere. Also the point of sale does not have any colour to it apart form the products themselves but what makes customers notice this point of sale is the lighting around it as it reflects off the products and the base of the point of sale making it hard to miss. Cost: The cost of this point of sale, although small, would be a high price for what you are actually buying in relation to the size because of the material that has been used. However it still isn't an expensive point of sale because of the size and design. Customer: This point of sale is aimed at people that already know the brand Armani as it does not give a lot of information. Also it has a lot of products to choose from which means that if you did not know which one you wanted then it is unlikely that a customer to go through all of the products to find one that they like. Environment: This point of sale was in Harvey Nichols in the Armani section of the shop. This point of sale sits on the edge of a counter which means you would have to walk round it to see all of the other products Armani does. This is good as it means that the customer has easy access to the products that are being shown on the point of sale. Size: This point of sale is very small and does not have a very good design because it is only got a base and nothing else. This is bad because it does not stand out very well which means although it is made bright by the lights it does not look appealing to the customer which would draw them away. Safety: This point of sale it very safe because it has no sharp edges and there is not a lot of the design that the customer could be affected by because the design is so basic. Function: This point of sale is good and bad for its function. On one hand it is good because it has the product the is being sold on display for the potential customers to see it, however it does not clearly show the brand unless you get close and look at it where as you should be able to tell the brand from a distance. Materials: This point of sale is only made of aluminium. This is good as it means that it is strong, however the design of the point of sale is bad which means that the material that they have used is pointless as they could of put the products on the counter and still had the same affect as the point of sale is giving.   • 23. Ascetics: This point of sale was in boots and it is for Calvin Klein. This is a good point of sale because it is big and has a large picture of a man that draws you in. also it has a demanding colour to it which gets the customers attention and draws them in. Cost: The cost of this point of sale would be reasonable for the size and material of the point of sale. It is quite large which would put the price up ,however it would not affect if massively as in relation to the brand and product it is reasonable. Customer: The customer that would be attracted to this point of sale are males between the ages of 25 to 30. this is good because this is the target audience for this product. This is a good point of sale as the target customer would be drawn in by the colours (blue for boys) and the man would draw them in as they would see him and think that they want to look like that. Environment: This point of sale was In boots in Bromley. It was placed at the top of an escalator which is good because it means it is in the foot fall of the potential customers. Also its good because it means you can not miss it which means that you are almost garneted a sale every day just because of where it has been placed. Size: This point of sale is big. It stands about 6 feet which means it is very eye catching. The actual product that you test sits on a shelf that is waist height. The shelf it light up where the product sits which is good because it makes the product more bold which stands out more. Also what is good it that it is tall but not wide so it doesn’t take up much space so the customer can still move round it with ease. Safety: This point of sale is very safe. It has not got any sharp edges that could be harmful to the customer and the material that it is made out of is not dangerous as it is not very hard. Function: This point of sale works very well as it does its job well. It not only clearly shows the brad , but also shows the name of the product that is being shown. Also it is very eye catching due to the size, colour and picture that has been put into the design of the point of sale. As well as the light the makes the actual product stand out more that it would already do. Materials: The material is basic on this point of sale. It is made out of cardboard and acrylic which does work well for this point of sale because it mean s It is easy to put together and is light weight which means that it can be moved easily. Also the material is good because it means that they could print the picture on rather than sticking it on. This is good because it means it looks like it all blends together. Ascetics: This point of sale is good because it has the brand name clearly shown and it stands out because it is bright. Also the design is simple but good because it shows off the brand but still maintains the good looking affect that the point of sale is giving. Cost: The cost of this product would be quite high because of the brands name and the materials that it is made of. However it would of cost even more if it was a larger point of sale but because it is quite small this keeps the cost down. Customer: The customer for this point of sale would reflect on the brand which would be between the ages of 20 to 35 (the same as Hackett) not only that, the customer would be someone who knows the brand and knows which product they want which means they would not need to smell each one to find one that they like. This is because of the range of products given in this point of sale. Environment: This point of sale was in the Hugo Boss shop in Canary Wharf. It was on the counter near where you pay which means it is visible buy potential customers. It was also placed at the end on the counter which means that customers would walk past it when they are walking around the shop, this means that a customer would notice it while they shop which means that it has been put in a good position. Size: This point of sale is quite small but only because it doe not need to be big. It sits on a counter which means it is at a good height and therefore does not need to be bigger and it can hold a good amount of products which also means it does not need to increase in size. Safety: This point of sale is safe because it has no sharp edges which means that it cant cause any harm to a customer. The only danger that you might have is that is it quite hard and heavy for its size because of the materials that are used in the point of sale, but unless you drop it or It falls on a customer it this would not be a problem. Function: This point of sale is good because it clearly shows the brand clearly and it also holds a lot of products which you can clearly see. Also this is good because it has a big panel ,where the products sit, that is light up which makes the products stand out a lot more drawing the customer in. Materials: This point of sale is for a high end brand and the materials reflect that. This point of sale is made from glass and metal. These are expensive materials for a point of sale which shows how big the brand is.   • 24. Materials Designs Finish The materials show above are wood (oak and pine), metal, acrylic and glass. These materials are what I feel would suit my point of sale as they all reflect the brand and suit the target age range. The finishes that are above are polished glass, chrome metal and varnished wood. These are the finishes I think would work well in my point of sale because they go with the style Hackett is. The designs shown above all have a style to them what would be good to incorporate in my point of sale. Also the styles above all reflect the brand style as they are all slick and eye catching. However it still has a modern touch to it which allows the customer to blend in with the modern time but with the traditional style. He likes old traditions. He’s the man who goes down the old style pub and socialises with the locals rather than just the people who he went in with. However he does like going out with his mates and enjoy them selves watching the racing or just having a classic game of pool.

  • 29. Hackett has grown from a stall on London’s Portobello Road to a global brand, founded by Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings in 1983. The company gradually expanded over several years, increasing the number of branches in the UK including Jermyn Street, Regent Street, East cheap and Covent Garden. Jeremy Hackett and Ashley Lloyd-Jennings meet in the Portobello Road, West London both combing the market for good second-hand traditional British men’s clothing. A business partnership is soon started with a small stall in Portobello themselves, selling on the clothing after cleaning and repairs. Hackett has now expanded to include several prime cities in Europe. Hackett sponsors world sporting events, organisations and companies with tailored clothing and accessories designed and sold in connection with existing sponsorships including Aston Martin, the British Army Polo Team and the London Rowing Club. In 2009, Hackett became the official clothing supplier to the Oxford University and Cambridge University boat race fortifying it’s British heritage.
  • 39. The first thing I looked at was how the base would look and how it would reflect the brand. This is the process I went through to find the best design. The first design idea that I had for the base was to just make a base plate and then attach the main pole on to it using a screw. However when I went to design it I found a problem. The main problem that I found was that using one screw is not very affective as it did not hold the main pole very well and it seemed to flimsy and would not be very well if it had got knocked. I then changed the original base design to improve it. To make the base more stable I added a ring around the main pole that would help to hold it in place more. Although this idea did seem to help make the pole less unstable, it was still very unstable and was easily knocked over. I then re-made it but made it taller so that it supported the main pole more. To further help the problem I then re-designed it by extending the ring so that the main pole just slots in. this made it much more stable and meant that I did not need to attach the main pole to the base as it would just slot in, making it easy to assemble when it arrives at the shop. A problem that I had with my base, after I developed it, was that the shape of the socket that the main pole slotted into did not represent the brand Hackett. I then had to re-think the design to do the same job but reflect the brand that I am doing. To do this I made it so that it was more of a cone shape that it slotted into which made the design look like it all fits together and that it flows as one constant section. (compared to the original witch just looked like shapes placed on top of each other). The next thing I looked at was the material that I looked at for my base parts. The main material that reflects my brand is wood. Therefore I looked at the different types of wood that I could use. The first wood I looked at was pine. I looked at how easy it was to work with and thought about if t reflected the brand Hackett enough. Pine was a good choice as it is a hard wood which means it is naturally strong and it also has a nice, natural colour to it. To test how easy it was to work with I took peace of pine and cut it down to a square block. I then drilled two holes through it and then shaped one of the corners so that it was curved. This was very easy to do with pine. This was good as it gave me an idea as to how pine is. However, it did not really have the colour of Hackett to it, but I could always add a finish to the wood to make it look more like Hackett. The second wood I looked at was oak. I, again, looked at how easy it is to work with by cutting it down, drilling it and then sanding down and shaping one of the edges. Oak was a bit more difficult to work with than pine but like pine it is a hard wood, which again means it has natural strength. Also oak has a grain that does represent Hackett as oak it considered to be a traditional, old fashion wood. Oak its a good wood, its ok to work with and it does represent Hackett with its grain. However, it would still need to be finished so that it would make it slightly more like Hackett. He final wood I looked at was American white oak (AWO). I did the same as I did with the other woods I looked at. I cut the peace of AWO that I had, drilled it and sanded and shaped one of the corners to see how easy it was to work with. It was about the same, work wise, as normal oak. Again it is a hard wood so it is naturally strong and the grain does represent Hackett very well. This wood be a good wood to use as I can work with it relatively easy as it shows the brand well. However if I was to use this wood I would probably add a finish to maybe make it a bit darker but other than that it is a really good wood. Also it is a resalable cost for Hackett. Out of all the woods I have looked at I think I will use American white oak as, out of all three woods, it shows the brand well.
  • 40. Now that I have an idea as to what wood I am going to use to make the base parts. I now have to look into and decide how to make each part of the base. Because of the dimensions of the wood that is available I have to join planks of wood together and then cut it out in order to make the design. The part I thought I should think about first is how I would make the base as the design I had is quite large and rounded but the peace's of wood we get are in planks. I thought that the best way to start the process of making the base plate would be to assemble the planks of wood so that I was able to get the shape that I needed out of them. The first way I thought of doing this would be to pile the planks on top of each other to make a square base and then attach them together. This was good as I got he size that I wanted. However it was weak as all the planks of wood where going the same way which means that if it was ever under pressure that was parallel to the planks then it would more than likely brake at the joints. I then decided to join them a different way. I took my inspiration for this idea from the way plywood is set up. Plywood has lots of sheets of wood that lay on top of each other, like I am trying to achieve, but they are placed so that the grain of the sheet of wood is crossed, this makes it stronger and less likely to warp. So for my design I thought I would do the same with the planks of wood. I will lay the planks of wood next to each other to make up the size and then put the top layer on so that it crosses. This would make the base stronger and it would enable me to make it to the specifications that I have. This is how I will start the process of making the base plate of my design as it is strong and simple to make. Now that I have looked into laying out the base plate, I am now going to focus on how to do this in the easiest way whilst making sure that it is strong. One way of joining all of the planks together was by using a tongued joint. This would be a good joint to use as it will work well with the planks of wood and it also allows me to work on the wood while it is joined. However when I tried to make this joint it was hard to do with the size of the wood that I was using. So I thought I would find another way of producing the base plate. Another way I thought of on how to join the planks of wood is to glue them together. This would be a good way as the glue would mean that less work will be needed to make the square block which means I would have more time to shape it and make it into the shape for my base. The only thing that would make it difficult is to hold the wood in place but I could get around this by making a frame or using a jig to hold it all in place while it dry's. however once it all dry’s it would be slightly harder to shape as it is difficult to cut with glue that if there wasn’t any glue, but it does not hold a very big problem, therefore I think I will use glue to hold it together in my final design.
  • 41. Now I am looking at making the cone part of the base. To make the cone part of the base I looked at different ways to do it. One way was to make it the same way as the base plate and stack the wood until I have a shape which I can work with to get my design out of it. This would be good as I already know how to do it as I would have done it for the base plate. However it would take time to wait for the glue to dry as I would have to wait for both parts of the base to dry before I can start to make them. This is a good way of doing it but I continued to look to see if I can make it another way. Another way of making the cone would be to start with a solid peace of wood and then get the cone shape from that. This would be easier than using glue as the process of making it would quicker as I could just start shaping and not have to wait for the glue to dry ,which makes the manufacturing process longer and therefore making the cost of the point of sale cheaper. The only problem I would have is getting the solid block of American white oak that I need, however I am able to get a solid block of normal oak ,but this would mean that the two parts of the base would be a different material. To have the two base parts a different material wouldn’t be ideal but it would be something to consider depending on the finishing of the wood and what they look like together. (seen on the next page) I then looked at how I was going to finish the wood for the base parts. I looked at what reflects the brand the best and also what looks the base. The first way I looked at finishing the wood on the base is by painting it. I chose to look at paint because it means that I could change the colour completely to make it look more like Hackett. I tried this by painting a peace of American white oak and see how it looked. I looked at how the paint stayed on the wood after I put it under work (not that I would do work on a peace of wood that had been painted but it was to see how long it would last), how it makes the wood looked and if it looks good enough for the brand. The second finish I looked at was a wood varnish. Wood varnish would be good as you can get light and dark varnish's and also it adds to the properties of the wood (i.e. making it more resistant to water). I looked at the same things that I looked at for the paint finish (such as how it looks, how it lasts and if it reflects the brand Hackett well). I did this by getting a block of the wood and applying it to the wood.
  • 42. I then started to think about how I would make the base plate of me design and what tools and machines I would use. The first thing I would need to do would be to cut up the planks of wood to the size that I need them to be. The ban saw is a good machine as it cuts through wood fast and its big which means I am not limited to the size of wood I can use. After I cut the planks down to size, I will use a jig of a frame to hold all of the peace's of wood together so that when the glue dry's the wood is in the position I want it. After the glue is set I will need to cut and shape the wood into the base plate that I have designed. I will use the ban saw, the same as in the first stage, and then smooth down the finish's shaping and smoothing down the wood until it resembles my design Now that I have decided what the base is made of and how it is made, the next thing I looked at was how to join the base that I have designed with the cone. The first way of joining the two designs that I looked at was gluing them. I thought that I could glue the two together with araldite. This is because araldite it very strong and it would be able to hold the two together very well. However, using glue does not reflect the brand that I am doing as it can be seen to be a bit tacky. Therefor I had to look at other ways to attach the two parts. I looked at another way of joining the two parts together. I tried to joining them like one bid dowel joint where the actual cone has a part coming from the bottom (this would be like the dowel) and then it would slot into thee base as it would have an indent so that the dowel can be slotted in. it was quite difficult to make this as it was hard to make the dowel part under the cone and it was not very stable. I then explored other ways I could do it. I then thought of attaching them with nails. This would be like the dowel only the nails would be the dowel. This was very easy to do and it worked well as it held them together strongly and it was hidden as it was underneath the design, however you are able to tear it off if you put force into it and it would need more than one nail to hold it firmly. Although using nails was good as it was simple and very affective. I felt that I could find some way of joining the two a better way and that would be even more affective. I therefore looked at holding them together with screws. This had the same affect as the nails as it was strong and held the two together well. Also it was slightly better than using nails as its teeth made it more stronger and durable. I therefore think I will use to attach the two parts.
  • 43. Now that I have decided on all the manufacturing parts of the base plate and the cone I will now look at size for both parts. The height of the base is 40mm. That is 2 of the planks of wood put on top of each other The width of the base will be 600mm. This would be a suitable platform in correlation to the height of the design. The width of the base of the cone will be 250mm as it is a good size in correlation to the base and the height of my design The width of the top part of the cone will be 75mm as that is wide enough to leave enough space for a whole that can fit the main pole of the design in. it is also a good size at it can have a decent and noticeable angle to it to make it look more like the brand.
  • 44. I then decided to look at the torso part of my design and focused on weather or no to stick with making it like a ribcage. For this I looked at some different mannequins. I looked at some designs of mannequins that already exist to see if I should base my design on one of them. The first one I am looking at is a simple design. It just consists of one main block that is the torso and nothing else. This is a simple design to do but it is very basic and I think that the rib cage design that I had was better because it is more complex and looks better. Also this mannequin does not really show the brand Hackett as it is to simplistic where as Hackett is a bit more out there. The second design I looked at was not as simplistic as the first one. The torso is simple but then the joints that attach the arms are good as they allow them to move and be positioned to how you want. I think that the rib cage design I had is better suite for the brand that I am going to do as this design for the torso is a bit to simplistic, however I will try to incorporate the idea of the arms being able to move as I think this would be good for my design. The final design I looked at was very good. It was more complexes than the others and it did look really good. However it is a design for a mechanical mannequin which I would not want to do as it does not reflect the brand I am doing. On the other hand the design does a little bit. However I still think that the best thing I could do is the rib cage design that I had at the start, but I will incorporate parts of this design (such as the plates) as they would help bring my design together and it would help with the mechanism that is going to be fitted. Now that I have decided on the rib cage design I am going to look at what shape I should make it and if I should incorporate the panels into the design (as I said on the last page). The first shape I looked at for the ribcage was the one that was on my concept of the design. On the concept they where a rounded design. Originally I thought that this would be good as it would be easy to make as I would only need to use one peace off wood for one rib and also the process that I would go through to make it would have been easy. However I then started to think that making it rounded would look to simple. I therefor went on to look at other ways I could shape it. I then looked at the ribs being more flat at the back to get more of a rib look, this was good as it made the bib wider which would make the suit fill out more to make it look better. However it also made it look a bit wired as it went from a completely straight back to then just a rounded front with no middle point. This then made is look less like the style of the brand as it did not flow where as Hackett is more about everything fitting together to look like one smooth shape. So I then developed it further by changing the shape of the rib design. I made it so that it was more sectioned so that when the suit is on the design it would look more natural and also with it being in sections the rib design looked like I flowed more which then made it look more like the Hackett design. Also the process is not as long a the original rounded design which then makes it cheaper to manufacture.
  • 45. Now that I had the shape of the rib, I then looked into actually making it to see how I would do it and to bring up any problems I might face. When I was looking at the shape of the design, I came across a problem. When I smoothed dove the edges it was difficult to sand down the inside of the rib with the belt sander, this meant I have to do it by hand which took much longer to do. this would then make the manufacturing cost go up as it took more time to do. I then looked into different ways I could solve the problem. One way I thought of to get over this problem was to make the inside of he rib stick out more so that it would be easier to sand. This would of helped my problem but then it would change the shape of my design which was not good as I had already decided that on the shape for the rib that most reflected the brand Hackett. Therefore I had to re-think a solution to the problem. I then decided to look started to think that if the ribs are cut to look like they are in sections then I could cut them into those sections. That way I can make sure that each peace is right and there is less chance for an error to occur in the making process. Also it means that it would add to the effect that each peace is coming together to make a shape that flows smoothly. This was good as it meant I could keep the new shape that I had decided on and keep it in the style of Hackett whilst giving a solution to the problem that I was facing. So now I am going to make the rib into sections and then join them to make up the rib. Now that I have the idea for the rib design, I can now start to look at the material that I can use. There are 3 materials I looked at for the ribs, 2 woods (American white oak and oak) and acrylic. Acrylic is a good material to use as you can design something on the computer and then lazier cut that design in the lazier cutter. This would be good for me as it has lots of parts to it which means it would make it easier for me to make my design in acrylic. Also acrylic an be easily joined together using an adhesive called araldite. However acrylic does not reflect the brand Hackett as it is not a very traditional material and it is not up market, where as Hackett is. The second material I looked at was one of the two woods. I looked at oak because it is more up market and it is a very traditional material. Oak is good to work with and you can apply many different finishes. Also there are many joints that I could use with oak to join the different sections. The final material that I looked at was American white oak (AWO). This is very similar to normal oak but it has a different colour grain. This relates to Hackett more than oak as it has a more traditional look to it. Also you could add varnish to finish it. This would also be a good material as it is the same material that I am using for the base, this would add consistency to my design. I therefore think I will use this for the making for the ribs of my design.
  • 46. Now that I know how I am going to construct the ribs in the rib cage. I thought I should look at how I would actually join each individual section of the rib to the other. I will design the ribs like this because it has many features to it. For example, with this design it make the design able to move with the suit. This then shapes it more and gives across a better affect. This however means that it will take a long time to make all the sections of the rib. Therefor it would be a better idea if I use acrylic to make the ribs as all the sections can be drawn and cut out using CAD and a laser cutter. I would then only have to line up and glue the sections. Because I am making the ribs out of acrylic. I need to make them thicker. To do this I will layer the acrylic, this means that it is thicker and also it means that it will be easier to join them the way I want. The way I would join them would be to make a finger joint using the layers of the acrylic. I would then drill a hole through the 3 sections that link together and then ,using an aluminium rod, I will then join them together. This still allows them to move. This is how I will shape one end of the rib (depending on what part it is). This shape allows it to move and pivot in one direction (this would be moving in to make the shape of the rib). Also this design means it can not be moved the wrong way as the shape of it will not allow it. I had to think of some way to allow it to pivot and then go back to how it was, this would also have allow it to push out on the suit that would be over it to make it look more like a persons chest. To do this I will make it so that there is a grove on the outside of the rib which I will then put an elastic band around it to allow it to retract when the tension it taken away from it.

Now that I know how my rib cage it going to be consisting of, I thought I should look into the process of how I will make sections of the rib First I shall draw out the ribs using the computer and then send it to the laser cutter to be cut out to the dimensions that I need them to be. I would then drill holes into the parts that need drilling using the pillar drill. After all the holes have been drilled I shall then glue all the peace's together to make the different sections of the rib using araldite. I will then put an aluminium rod through the hole to secure the different sections together. After I have done this I will attach it to the main body and then apply the elastic band to the design.

  • 49. This will be what the customer sees from my point of sale as there will be a suit over the mannequin. This is good as it will make it look more like Hackett. Also this is also the tester. In the top pocket of the blazer there will be a hankie which will be scented with the fragrance. The customer will the take the hankie to smell it and they will be able to take it and use it as their own ( doing this is good as it makes the customer like the brand as they are getting something for free) from pulling out the hankie that is on show, it will also pull out with it the next hankie slightly so that it is on show for the next customer. (this will be like how a tissue box works in that the tissues are folded into each other, this will be the same concept) To do this I will make the top pocket bigger on the inside so that it can fit a large amount of hankies inside it without showing to much from the outside.
  • 50. I looked at how the pole would be attached to the base plate and the cone of my design. At first I looked at glues but then I decided that it would be better if it just slotted in as the height of the cone is tall enough for it to do so without falling out and it will still be stable. This it a good way of doing it as it means that the point of sale can be delivered in parts and then be put together on site easily and allowing the shop assistant to put it together without any struggle. To make sure that it is able to be slotted in and out easily and it lands carefully when it hits the bottom I will put a peace of acrylic, the same size radius as the base of the pole, in side the cone and on the base of the pole. These two peace's will then meet when the pole it put in so that it is a softer touch and it will also protect the wood if it is pushed down too violently. I looked at how the ribs would be attached to the main pole. The most affective way of doing this would be to indent the main pole (like a female mould) and then make a bit on a section of the rib that sticks out (like a male mould) and then slot them together. To make it a bit more secure I thought it would be a good idea to use small magnets. One in the rib section and one in the indent on the main pole. This just means that it is a bit more secure than what it would be. I will put a peace of transparent acrylic over the magnet on the rib so that it will make it easier so separate yet still hold the two sections together well.
  • 51. To do the elastic idea for the rib cage I will make the middle section of the rib smaller in width. This will give the elastic a groove to go down. Also when it gets to the end point of the rib I will then leave out the curved part in the middle section. This means that the elastic band can go into this gap, then once the aluminium rod goes in it can go through the middle of the elastic band. This will secure it and make it so that the elastic band will move all the rib. I thought of making my rib design in the shape of the rib of a person. However this would be very time consuming as it would mean I would have to make each rib differently. However with the elastic around the outside of the rib it allows them to move and take the shape of the shirt and blazer that will go over it. This means that I can make the ribs all the same, which will be easier in the manufacturing process, and it will still look realistic when the shirt is on. Each rib is going to be made as a 1/3 of its final height(this is the same height as one sheet of acrylic). Once all 3 peace's of one section of rib is made I will then glue them together. There are two different shapes that the rib has. One has a grater angle than the other. This is because if it was all the same it would make the rib round where as I need it to be more of an oval shape. Therefor the angle that the ribs are will be different on some of them (as you can see on the left). I was going to put the product on the suit some how. However I thought it would be better if it just sat at the top of the main pole. For this I would then have to make sure the pole sticks out enough so that the product can be placed there. This is good as it means that the product will be in the eye line of the customer as the pole will be 5ft 7in tall. This will then make sure that the customer knows what they are testing. To finish my design I thought I could put a peace of black acrylic on top of the pole as a platform for the product to sit on.
  • 52. Next I looked at how the suit would sit on the mannequin. I have thought about the chest part but not about the shoulders. The most simplest way to do this would be to make a hanger type design and then attach it to the main pole above the ribs. That way the suit would sit on the hanger and the ribs would then take shape, making it look more realistic. To do this I think it would be better if I just got a wooden hanger and then take the hook off of it. Then I can just attach it to my design through a cut that I will make going through pole. As the pole is not big enough for the neck of the shirt (which is approximately 15.5” round) I will make something that is so that is. The best way of doing this would be to cut out a peace of acrylic which is that size (it will be in the shape of a ring) I will make two of them so that it is taller and fills the collar more. Using aluminium rods I will join this to the main pole. I will attach one end to the ring and then drill a hole into the pole for the rod to slot into.
  • 53. Next I looked at displaying the product for customers to buy. I thought that the best way to do this is to have a shelf on the mannequin. I thought the best place to put this would be just under the suit. I wanted the shelf to fit the rest of the design so I made it in the shape of one of the rib sections but filled in on each half. (this would again be made from 3 layers of acrylic) However due to the fact that this is going to be put under pressure as there will be things on it I thought I could reinforce it with aluminium rods. These will go from the curved parts at the end on the shelf to the main pole at a slight angle (going up from the main pole) this means that it will stop the shelf from dropping down. After I made a model of the hanger part of my design I tested It out with a blazer and a shirt.. After trying it out I realised that the neck part I originally designed was not necessary and that it wouldn’t work. However, I still needed something to hold the front of the collar up a bit to make it more realistic. This new design will work in the same way. It will be out enough to make it so that the collar looks like it is filled and it will slot into a hole that is in the main pole. I twill be using this design out of the 2 for the neck part of my design.

One of the boxes is “finishing touches”, this is where I go back over my whole design and make sure that I have covered everything that I needed to, put the suit over the design and add the bottle and testers onto it.   • 58. For my design, there where many points where I had to measure out parts to make each bit the same. Some of these are shown in the pictures bellow. I used this jig to make sure that each hole in the ribs where in the same place. I measured out each bend with a ruler so that each bend was the same length. I marked out how big the cuts had to be on the legs so that they where all the same. QUALITY CONTROL CHECKS
  • 59. There where some problems that various users of my product noticed whilst it was in use. I took all these problems and came up with a solution so that the users and customers where happy with the product. One of the problems that a user had with my design was that where the ribbed section slotted into the main pole, it made the shape of the suit look unrealistic and thought it would be better if it was all flush with the main pole. To fix this problem I decided to make it so that the ribs did sit flush with the main pole. To do this I had to change the design slightly, by cutting the main pole in sections rather than just indent them. Then I drilled a hole through the rib and the main pole where it had been cut so that I could join them with a dowel. This worked well as it meant that it was all flush together and it also made it easier to apply the elastic, due the fact that I was able to join it to the dowel rather than drilling another hole like I had originally planed. A problem that another user had was that the base of my design made it so that the design wasn’t very stable if there was a bump in the floor of the floor was un-level. They said that because it was just a flat surface they was unable to adjust it to a position where it didn’t rock side to side. To fix this problem I decided to make it so that the design had legs rather than just a flat based. This meant I had to get two peace's of wood and make a finger joint type design and then secure them with an aluminium rod. Then to make it so that it can adjust easy I attached a spring on the inside of the leg so that they would adjust to make the design level. This fixed the problem of the design being unstable and it also made it look more complex. Another problem that users brought up was that when the suit was put on the mannequin, the shoulders sat to far back and made it look unrealistic and miss-shaped. The reason for this was because the hanger that was built into the design sat in the middle of the main pole, where as it should be more forward so that it gives the suit more of a realistic shape. To fix this problem that I was having, I changed it so that the hanger sat more forward on the main pole. To do this I cut out a section from the front of the main pole. Then I got an old cut off from the main pole, cut and shaped it, and fixed it into the cut out section of the main pole, then attach the hanger onto that part. This made the suit fit more forward, as it was stuck out more, and made the shape of it look better and more realistic. USER FEEDBACK AND MODIFICATION
  • 60. Features that my design should include.  My point of sale should be able to display more than 1 product that is on sale. I have not kept to this specification. The reason is because when I came to put all of my design together I noticed that the shelf would be to low and it would make my product less ergonomically to the user, therefor I decided to leave it out. ………………………………………………………………………......  My design should be able to portray the brand easily so that the customer knows what they are buying. I feel that I have not done this specification as I haven't given enough information about the product that is on display on my design. however, I have given vital information like the price of the product. ………………………………………………………………………......  My design should be eye catching to the customer to maximise the chance of a sale. I think that I have kept to this specification to make my design eye catching because I have made my design life size, which people will notice, it looks interesting in the way that it looks and the style of it. I feel that I have kept to all the specification in the things that I did not want my design to incorporate. This is good as it means my design does not have any features that you wouldn’t want to have on a PofS. For example, my design does not have any sharp edges which could harm the customer and my design is not too complicated so that the customer would be confused when they look at it. However, it does have some complexity to the design so that it makes it look interesting. Things I want to incorporate in to my final design.  My final design should be a reasonable size so that it would be easy for the customer to notice my PofS but not be overwhelmed by it. I feel that I have kept to this specification as I have made my design so that the size it suitable for the PofS. I feel that I have kept to the specification of the materials that I have said I would use as I have used wood, metal and I have also used acrylic. I have kept with this specification due to the fact that I did not incorporate any complicated shapes. I have done this specification as throughout my design I have kept the colours reflecting the colour contrast that the Hackett shops use. Users of my product said that they could clearly see my point of sale when they walked into the shop because of the size of it. However some of them said that It blended in a bit to much and that they only noticed it was a point of sale for a fragrance when they walked near it. The users have answered most of these in the other specifications, such as the information that is on the product. My client said that to show the other products they had to put them on the counter and was unable to put them on my point of sale. They said that whey would of preferred it if there was a place to put other products on it. My client said that the majority of the customers knew what the product was. However, some of them had to ask what the product was. My client said “ we feel that the information that is on the point of sale is good, however there could be a bit more so that all the customers would know more about what they are buying”. ………………………………………………………………………......  My design should be eye catching to the customer to maximise the chance of a sale. The clients thought that my design was very eye catching as they said that there was a lot of customers that noticed it and looked at it more closer. I asked the client for my product what they thought about the size of my product. They said “it is a good size for what it is for, however to put it in the store we would need to ether have the space or make space for it”/ however they did go on to say “it would be beneficial as we could use it as a regular mannequin as well as a point of sale, which means we would be able to replace the mannequin that is already in store” ………………………………………………………………………......  My final point of sale should reflect the brands material by using materials that they have used, such as wood and metal. I asked my client if they agreed with the materials that I used and if it reflected the brand that I was doing. They said “ we do agree with the materials that you have used, however we would, perhaps, prefer it if the rib cage was made of wood as we feel that it would better suit the brand”. Although I will take this into consideration, I think that this would be irrelevant as you would be unable to see the rib cage once the suit is on. ………………………………………………………………………......  My final design should have simple shapes to allow the customer to understand the design more. My client said “ there isn't any complicated shapes on the design and id it simple to assemble when it is delivered”. However, they did ask more about the ribs and why they are made the way they are. I responded by saying “they ribs are the way they are for two reasons. One is because it makes the design look more complex, the second is because it allows you to change the size of he clothes on the mannequin which allows you to display a range of sizes”. ……………………………………………………………………….....  My point of sale should have colours that refer to the brand, such as the ones they use for there stores. My client said “the colour of the point of sale did reflect the brand well” they also went on to say that they liked how they where able to put their own suits on the point of sale so fully reflect the brand. EVALUATION OF SPECIFICATION PROOF These sequences of pictures show how customers would interact with my point of sale. The customer walks up to the PofS and takes the pocket hankie . The hankie is scented with the Hackett fragrance. When one hankie is removed another one appears The customer is then able to walk off with the hankie and keep it, this means they will always have the smell with them.
