16. Mark Granovetter's paper "The Strength of Weak Ties" is a
highly influential sociology paper, with over 22,000 citations
according to Google Scholar. He discovered that the foot-in-
the-door at the company where you want to work isn't going to
come from your best friends or family--your strong ties. That
job lead is going to come from weak ties (e.g classmates,
employers, acquaintances and teachers who never became
close friends) as they’re the individuals who have information
and opportunities you don’t currently have. If you already had
access to the opportunity why wouldn’t you have taken it
already? Start being active on social media today!

73% of companies surveyed hired someone. Not found someone, but went from social network to office chair. 73%. That’s incredible; good news for Gen Y especially. But, the other side of this coin is 79% of hiring managers found reasons to NOT hire someone, to end their chances at working with this company, because something they saw on social media. Perhaps that’s because Gen Y is growing up, or because we’re all trying to figure out social media right now, but with such a high percentage, we’re all probably at fault one way or another and it’s affecting our chances at job we want.I’m not saying all our social profiles need to be clinical or sterile. The opposite is true, it’s good to show your personality and passions online. I’m going to tell you why you what to clean up (or at least sweep under the rug), how to prevent your profiles from getting unsanitary in the first place and then some really cool tools to make your online life easier.
Poor spelling and profanity make a bad impression to a majority of recruiters. An despite how many times we’re told not to have alcohol in our photos, that’s actually the least of our worries (but it might be most common). It’s worth adding that nearly 80% had a positive reaction to discovering candidates were members in professional organizations. HINT HINT. 66% had a positive reaction when they saw volunteering.

Creating content is the most important step! It defines how you’ll be seen online. Perhaps a content is a witty tweet, a tutorial video or a new look at information through a blog post. Whatever it is, make sure it’s valuable to your audience.
