66. Beijing. December 1948. This impervious old man at the right is a eunuch who once served in the court of the Dowager Empress Tzu Hsi when the Imperial Court counted 400 eunuchs.
They served as chamberlains to the emperors and their concubines. By 1949, only 40 eunuchs still survived and they were living in a monastery.
