2. INTRODUCTION
A. Background
1. Vocabulary, which consists of the knowledge of
meaning as the main component of a language,
should be taught together with reading.
2. Reading is very important to find out
information and knowledge that the students need.
3. many learners face some difficulties in reading
comprehension

Objective of the research
“Is there any significant correlation between the students’
vocabulary mastery and their reading comprehension?”
Significance of the research
find out whether or not there is a significant correlation
between the students’ vocabulary mastery and their reading
comprehension.
the result of the research will give some useful information about
vocabulary achievement and reading comprehension achievement
and also present the description and correlation between the
mastery of vocabulary and the ability of reading comprehension

Preece (1936:1655) claims that “vocabulary” means a list
of words with their meanings, glossary, some of words
used in a language or particular books or a branch of
science.
Reading comprehension is a complex process in which the
reader uses his mental contents the meaning from written
material (Rubin in Hasdaniah, 1993:12).

H1 (directional hypothesis) states that there is a significant
correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading
comprehension
H0 (null hypothesis) explain that there is no a significant
correlation between vocabulary mastery and reading
comprehension.
7. RESEARCH METHOD
Research design
Variable
The researcher will apply a
correctional design
The researcher will be use two variables, they
are: independent variable (X) and dependent
variable (Y). In this research the dependent
variable is vocabulary mastery (X) and the
independent variable is reading comprehension
(Y).
8. Population
Sample
The population of this research will be
the second year students of SMA
NEGRI 1 RILAU ALE’ KAB.
BULUKUMBA class XI IPA in
academic year 2011-2012 that consist
of three classes.
The sample will be taken
using simple random
sampling technique
9. Instrument
Procedures of Collecting Data
the researcher will use two tests namely:
vocabulary test and reading comprehension
test, both of them use multiple choice type
1. Distribute vocabulary test and reading
comprehension test
2. Scoring the students’ work
10. Technique of Data Analysis
the researcher will use the correlation
method and SPSS program to analyze
the data collected through the
vocabulary test and reading
comprehension test
