Presenting People in Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two...
Presenting People in Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes, and Island
Man In this essay I will compare the ways in which the poets present people in "Two Scavengers in
a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and "Island Man" by Grace
Nichols. In this essay I will look at the shape, structure, poetic devices and language in both poems.
Firstly I will examine what the two poems are about and the ways how both poets portray the people
in the poems. The poem "Two Scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes" is about a
coincidence meeting of the two working class scavengers and a beautiful, rich couple in Mercedes.
This poem was set in America and was aimed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
There is no punctuation used throughout the poem but capital letters are. Reading this poem I have
noticed that Lawrence Ferlinghetti uses lots of poetic devices such as alliteration "short skirt",
repetition "elegant" "and" "the", and similes "looking down like some gargoyle Quasimodo". This
phrase makes me think of vultures (garbage men) (types of bird that eat dead meat) gazing upon
their pray (couple in the Mercedes.) The language in the poem is very descriptive and vivid. The
poet introduces color to the poem too, to show more vivid images. He did that to attract more of the
reader's attention. E.g. He used color to describe the yellow garbage truck and the traffic light. From
this we can see that the poet uses color effectively. The poem "Island Man" was written by Grace
Nichols. Its about an immigrant from the West Indies, dreaming about sound of Caribbean sea. He
wakes up to the roar of London traffic. The poet is commenting on the difficulty for immigrant adapt
to a urban environment. The poem "Island Man" gives us a picture of two different worlds and is
based on dreams and reality. The poem is divided into 6 stanzas. I think that the stanzas are used to
contrast the experiences that the island man have had. There are two distinct parts of the poem,
Caribbean and London. In my opinion looking at this poem the lines reflect the shape and action of
the sea. The wave line shape of the

Theme Of Redemption And Good Country People By Flannery O...
Flannery O 'Connor 's stories "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", and "Good Country People" both
present very similar themes. Within these stories is the theme of redemption, and the way
relationships affect the way people interact with each other seem to be a core issue she struggles
with. Both stories have a protagonist that have to deal with some type of villain who has little to no
belief, while their presence of faith that there is good in people gets them into the horrible situations
that they find themselves in. She uses some of the same aspects in both stories in very different
ways. The characters are a big part of her stories, the conflicts that arise in the story, and the
symbolism that is used. This paper will explore how faith can lead us to have false hope and why it
is important to remain aware. In both stories there are seemingly different protagonist. First there is
Hulga. She is someone that rude, harsh, with Doctorate in Philosophy, and is appalled by the idea of
love. Then you have a grandmother, who is always looking back on the old days and a slight sense
of wonder. From what O 'Connor gives the reader in their descriptions, there is not much similarities
happening. However, under the surface of these characters the reader can see that both characters are
somewhat shallow and do not see this about themselves. Hulga, even though she is highly educated
she is a believer in nothing, all she knows is what to say and when to say it. This becomes obvious

Hitler Was A Man Of The People
Hitler was a man of the people. He was a great orator and was talented at public speaking. Using
that gift he was able to rally a crippled Germany behind him to become one of the world's strongest
super powers pre WWII. Hitler was loved by his people and feared by his enemies. His following of
those early philosophers was how he founded the Nazi party. He would have pleased Machiavelli
with his ability to be both the fox and the lion. Hitler was cunning and smart, he was able to turn
himself around from seemingly homeless to the head of the German state. He was also able to rally
the Germans behind him, he was courageous and strong and that appealed to the German people.
"Extinguish the line of Princes" was a quote from Machiavelli meaning that the new Prince, in an
effort to maintain his position, should remove anyone who posed a threat to his power. Hitler did
just that when he elected himself Dictator and dissolved the parliament beneath him. He gave
himself ultimate control over Germany. Hitler would have disappointed Machiavelli by being
reckless. All of Machiavelli's work boils down to a Prince gaining power and using any means
necessary to keep it. The German war machine, while would have been impressive, caused Hitler to
fall to exactly what Machiavelli warned against. Machiavelli is quoted saying "He who is blinded by
ambition, raises himself to a position whence he cannot mount higher, must thereafter fall with the
greatest loss." Such a quote is very fitting of

Analysing the Two Poems of: Island Man and Two Scavengers...
Analysing the two poems of: Island man and Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a
Mercedes and how the poet creates conflict
Firstly, we began to read Island Man as a class in lessons. This is written by Grace Nichols and is
published in a book titled "Anthology". The surface meaning of the poem is based on a man who
used to live on a Caribbean island and still dreams of this place even now when he lives in London.
At a first glace of the poem, it comes across as short and sharp, for example, the first line of the
poem consists of the word "Morning". This may look as though a far from exciting way for a poem
to begin, but from this, the author is starting to create an image in the readers head and this is setting

An echoing technique is used with the repetition of the line "groggily groggily" when the next
stanza begins with "muffling muffling" emphasizing that the character can't get the city noises out of
his head. These sounds give the feeling of being enclosed somewhere, which is portraying his
feelings towards London city.
The lack of punctuation in the poem lets it run freely, again, this could reflect on the characters
feelings of wanting to be free and live naturally on an island. The irregular lengths and placing of
lines is to form a visual pattern resembling the shore and tide. 'Island Man' is just nineteen lines in
length but the writer seems to capture his feelings well and makes you feel sympathy for the
character. However the conflict is shown within the two places and how the man feels about these
places. He obviously strongly dislikes the dullness of London and city life, and wishes he was living
on an island where he imagines himself to be. The poet shows this by creating two completely
different images in the readers head, one being described as a beautiful and warming place, and the
other a dull, noisy and polluted place.
Lawrence Ferlinghetti writes 'Two Scavengers In a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes'. The
poem's surface meaning is the writer recalling a moment in a life when a garbage truck and a
Mercedes were both stopped at traffic lights. It is built

The Unknown Citizen By Auden
"The Unknown Citizen," written by W. H. Auden, is a poem that describes a man who lived a life
most people would see as ideal. The man illustrated by this poem did what society expected him to
do, which resulted in a model life. This poem, however, can be seen in more than one way. Some
may see the story in the poem as a description of a man who had an unfulfilling life because he did
exactly what was expected of him. Instead of trying something new, exploring the world, or making
a change, the man did what everyone else regarded as acceptable. W. H. Auden's poem can be seen
from two perspectives: the man who lived an ideal life that many people sought to have or the man
who lived an unfulfilling, ordinary life which caused him to blend in ... Show more content on

W. H. Auden's poem, "The Unknown Citizen," is a great example of this because one can find at
least two meanings within the poem. One person could see the poem as a description of a perfect
man while someone else could see the poem as a message to be unique and make a change in the
world. The man in the poem fulfilled society's expectations, but at the same time, the man may not
have had a fulfilling life. These two ideas could not be the only interpretations of the poem. Other
readers may discover their own meanings or explanations of the poem. Overall, the speaker in "The
Unknown Citizen" describes the life of an unknown man, but the reader must decide the message

Slender Man Argumentative Essay
Introduction Slender Man became known to the internet in 2009 but has been around since the very
late 1900s. This terrifying character is a very tall and slender figure that does not have a face but had
tentacles as arms; many that is. Legend has it that when people used to talk about or come across
Slender Man, they were never to be found. He is known to be extremely treacherous and targets
many people until he gets what he wants. This figure is hard to find but sometimes radios, cameras,
and such can locate him by the way they respond. He is often shown in photographs even though

Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good...
"A Good Man Is Hard To Find" and "Good Country People" are two short stories written by
Flannery O'Connor during her short lived writing career. Despite the literary achievements of
O'Connor's works, she is often criticized for the grotesqueness of her characters and endings of her
short stories and novels. Her writings have been described as "understated, orderly, unexperimental
fiction, with a Southern backdrop and a Roman Catholic vision, in defiance, it would seem, of those
restless innovators who preceded her and who came into prominence after her death"(Friedman 4).
"A Good Man Is Hard To Find" and "Good Country People" are both set in the South, and O'Connor
explores the tension between the old and new South. The stories are tow ... Show more content on

O'Connor describes the children's mother in contrast to the grandmother by what they are wearing;
thus their clothes represent the age from which they are. The Children's mother "still had on slacks
and still had her head tied up in a green kerchief, but the grandmother had on navy blue straw sailor
hat with a bunch of white dot in the print"(O'Connor 118). The children's mother is representative of
the New South in which the Southern Lady is becoming less of a central figure within society. A
lady of the old south would never wear slacks and tie her hair up in a kerchief to go out in public.
Under an old south mentality these actions would be considered very unlady like. O'Connor
illustrates the tension between the old and the new south by the constant struggle between the
grandmother, her son, and the daughter–in–law.
O'Connor also poses the contrast between the old and new South in her short story "Good Country
People". Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman represent the old South because of the way in which they
carry themselves and their traditional beliefs and values. Mrs. Freeman works for Mrs. Hopewell
who states "the reason for her keepin her so long was that they were not trash. They were good
country people"(O'Connor 272). Mrs. Hopewell describes Mrs. Freeman and her two daughters as
"two of the finest girls she knew and Mrs. Freeman was a lady and that she was never ashamed to
take her anywhere or introduce her to anybody they might mett"(O'Connor

the recreation of the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ in black–and–white. During Walt's
"careless" years he was able to discover much about himself. He began to develop love and
admiration towards nature, wildlife, family and community. Additionally, he discovered love for
acting and performing. There wasn't much he could do about it, but he took advantage of his
opportunity. During school he would entertain his friends by imitating his all time hero, Charlie
Chaplin (Walt Disney, Biography). Without much of an economic advantage, he continued to
flourish in his talent for performing. At night, when his parents were asleep, Walt would sneak out

Comparison Of Good Country People And A Good Man Is Hard...
In both "Good Country People" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find" the definition of good is
somewhat skewed, when I read the stories the people who are depicted as good are actually quite
bad. In "Good Country People", the sheer fictional elements such as Hulga having a wooden leg
only for it to be stolen by a Bible salesman with a nasty habit of stealing from others on his travels is
an interesting development that defines Hulga's revelation in such that keeps the reader satisfied.
Such elements also show that no matter the person, however they are, can be capable of evil and that
not everyone by appearance is as they seem. To add on to this, both Pointer coming across as a well–
raised Christian and Hulga's mother always being so conscious and judgmental of her choices
further strengthen that ugliness in such terms as one being grotesque stems from the nature of a
person for who they are as an individual. "Lord. He bored me to death but he was so sincere and
genuine I couldn't be rude to him. He was just good country people, you know– just the salt of the

Technology's Impact On Man And Society : Does Technology...
Does technology affect people or do people affect technology? Technology influences each
appearance about our daily lives, it has an effect on the growth of the economy, and our culture. We
all use it every day for different purpose and people take it for granted, and without knowing about
what brought that technology into existence and never actually notice the level of impact it has on us
until we have no telephone, transport, or electricity. Improvements in technology have immensely
expanded our living standards. Although the fact that we are experiencing very high inflation rates
and the rates of unemployment are very high people are still feeding better and dressing better and
are as matter of fact living more convenient lives.
Meanwhile older generations have a hard time accepting the new technologies and continue to
favour technology they are addicted to. To interpret technology meaning first we need a universal
definition: "Machinery and devices developed from scientific knowledge." But one of my favourite
definition of the term comes from the book of Emmanuel G. Mesthene's terrific little 1970 book,
Technological Change: Its Impact on Man and Society: "We define technology as the organization
of knowledge for the achievement of practical purposes." Technology can also be defined as the
expansion to which a society manipulates its environment and this also raised concerns, its poor
utilization has resulted into the pollution of the environment and it has also cause

Comparing A Good Man Is Hard To Find And Good Country People
The Power of Judgement
Are there really any "good" people living on this planet? This question seems to loom in the one's
mind after reading Flannery O'Connor's two stories, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Good
Country People". Not only does O'Connor portray gruesome imagery throughout both stories, she
also incorporates aspects of religion. What makes these stories captivating is the element of pure
shock during the climax. Nevertheless, the short stories both help the readers visualize how judging
others or jumping to conclusions about certain individuals can have a dramatic conclusion.
O'Connor enlightens the readers about how judging a book by its cover or jumping to certain
conclusions about others can be fatal. This is shown in "Good Country People" when the main
character Hulga gets too comfortable with a bible salesman named Manley Pointer. Even though
Pointer seems simple or of "good country people", he is the polar opposite. In fact, he has a secret
identity and cons disabled women. However, the reader does not understand this shocking twist until
Pointer gets close to Hulga and convinces her that they are in love just to steal her prosthetic leg.
O'Connor also uses the theme of judgment in another short story.

The book A Man of the People is a postcolonial view on politics that is written by the author Chinua

political arena that is described in the book. The political office won is has been merely a tool for
the politician to secure wealth and control over a society being robbed for the self interest one mans
greed. There are modern aspects of political campaigning. This postcolonial palace as some of the

They can also be herd on the radio, and unlike today are played on loudspeakers that are placed on

a pension system that Odili Samalu father benefits from because he retired from being a government
interpreter. There is a funded government educational system in place, that which shows that there is
a modern type government in place.
There is much corruption that is tied to the way in which things have been structured in the book.
The current president which is Chief Nanga has been using taxes to fill his own desires and buy off
problems. He is has building himself a four story house with the money he makes. He even goes to
buying off a woman's father for her hand in marriage. His he supported by American and British
capitalist interest whom fund his political party. There are strikes and violent mob attacks on official
people that have created this financial tension on the poor.
The political system seams also to be a parliamentary based system of government. In the being of
the book the narrator notifies us of this when he is describing Chief Nanga's climb to power. The
parliamentary system can be bought into and that follows with some other aspects of the political
structure in the book. For instance when Chief Nanga bribes Max to change sides and help the P.O.P
and he instead use's it for the C.P.C. benefit. This

Analysis of the Handsomest Drowned Man in the World
The Handsomest Drowned Man in the world, written by Gabriel Garcia Marquez shows how the
villagers change from their everyday lives to an unknown experience that unites the people. This
change is symbolized through the drowned man. Marquez shows this as a valuable change that
develops the village in a beneficial way. The people show the common human instinct (that changes
from the norm) is appreciated and acknowledged. In the short story, "The Handsomest Drowned
Man in the World," the drowned man transformed the village change from becoming an isolated and
ignorant village to a much happier and improved village.

It shows that a person has the ability to change an entire society and inspire others. The
transformation of this society comes entirely from within. The dead man is dead, which means the
change and transformation comes from the villagers entirely and that they are responsible for
whatever the society has turned into. It also shows that the village is entirely based on their fantasy
about a man who is dead. The people make the dead man a symbol of improvement, when really it is
their fantasy which they portray to change the atmosphere around them. The villagers have a fantasy
in their mind about the drowned man. They show their admiration and project qualities onto him
which they find to be valuable. Many people were paralyzed with regard and attraction which can be
shown when Marquiez states, "Fascinated by his huge size and his beauty the women then decided
to make him some pants from a large piece of sac..." (Marquiez 3). This shows that the women had
such a strong admiration and falling toward this dead old man that even without knowing him, they
judged him by his beauty. They called him Esteban because of his looks and because they're
perceived that "if a man should be handsome, they would be royal and smart." This scenario can be
related back to a common phrase, "judging a book by its cover". The people looked at the man as a

Essay about White People and Black Man
Crash. It is the perfect analogy of how we as a human race deal with life, people and our own
experiences. Physical characteristics and racial differences may be interpreted as two distinguishing
traits that separate us. I think it's what keeps us apart. That leaves several abstract questions that the
film Crash illustrates. What are the origins of personal prejudice? Do individual experiences fuel
standing stereotypes? Is it easier to perpetuate existing stereotypes because "things will never

overcoming these prejudices? The writers of the Crash managed to extend my viewing experience

Sandra Bullock's character made the statement about the relationship between white and black
people:
"If a white woman sees two black men walking towards her and turns the other way, she's a racist.
Well I got scared and didn't' say anything, and the next thing I knew, I had a gun shoved in my
head!"
Perhaps stereotypes like that have maintained their prevalence because there are so many people that
perpetuate them. It is often believed that all young black men are destined to be thugs, criminals and
drug dealers. Additionally it is a common statistic that the majority of incarcerated males are African
American. As a young black man, it must be difficult to break free of that stereotype.
"Things will never change." That attitude along with the perpetuation of existing stereotypes may be
largely responsible for negative racial longevity. Ludacris' character was one of the most interesting
to me. Here was this articulate young black man that spent his life stealing cars from white people.
"Rap music is the music of the oppressor," he said. It is often easier to blame others for your
shortcomings than it is to confront them head on.
On the reverse, trouble facing stereotypes can occur anywhere. They are not simply restricted to
skin–tone and neighborhoods. Racial discrimination transpires through social class as well. This
creates division within the

Imperfection and Faith in A Good Man is Hard to Find and...
Knowing Flannery O'Connor's religious conviction, one cannot overlook this underlying tone in
both of her regarded stories "A Good Man is hard to Find" and "Good Country People". It is often
said of those who stand outside of religious conviction that faith seems to come in handy to people
only when it is valuable to get them out of a predicament, of which they have likely placed
themselves through insensitive behavior and decisions. In such a desperate attempt to appeal to
faith, one only finds emptiness and a fate that leaves them hopeless or even dead. O'Connor's "A

The grandmother's bigotry is also on display as the family rides past a black youth standing near his
modest home. Her reaction to seeing him is like walking past an adorable dog; "Oh look at the cute
little pickaninny!" (12). When her granddaughter June Starr comments on the boy's lack of clothing,
the grandmother explains that "little niggers in the country don't have things like we do" (12). As the
grandmother emits racism through her comments, she is also inserting such notion into her
grandchildren's minds. Nor Bailey or his wife says anything, so it can be suggested that they are
used to such comments and may hold the same views as well. The grandmother does not see a
reason to be empathetic; the boy waves and she does return the gesture. Instead she romanticizes the
boy's plight as a missed opportunity, suggesting that "If [she] could paint, [she'd] paint that picture"
(12).
Not only is the grandmother intolerant, but she is also quite vain, with an entire paragraph
illustrating her choice of clothing for the road trip. Most people going on a road trip dress casually

A Good Man Is Hard And Good Country People By Flannery O '...
In the short stories "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Good Country People," Flannery O'Connor
writes about violence. The violence in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" surprises the reader because it
is unexpected. Flannery O'Connor lulls the reader into a false sense of security and then pulls the
rug out from under you at the end of the story. The violence is found within the character "The
Misfit" and in his murderous actions. The violence in "Good Country People" is found within the
character Hulga Hopewell and her hostility toward her mother, religion, and herself. Flannery
O'Connor uses violence to criticize the hypocrisy of certain ideas and accepted cultural and religious
norms. Textual evidence is necessary in this essay to prove the idea that Flannery O'Connor uses
violence in these two stories to criticize the hypocrisy in the characters. In Flannery O'Connor's "A
Good Man is Hard to Find," the hypocrisy and selfishness of the grandmother brings about all of the
conflict in the story. As John Desmond notes in his essay "Flannery O'Connor's Misfit and the
Mystery of Evil," "her [the grandmother's] lying and selfishness lead directly to the accident and the
subsequent murder of her family" (133). The grandmother deceitfully coaxes her son Bailey and his
family into going to Tennessee because she wants to, even though no one else in the family has any
desire to go there. The grandmother considers herself a lady and a "good Christian woman" (133),

no one has come close to leaving one behind the way Mohandas Gandhi did. Gandhi is known as a

England" (Gandhi 21). Mohandas went to England with a friend, leaving his wife, son, and mother
all behind.
On his trip to England, Mohandas Gandhi struggled with the English language, and how to eat with
utensils. Gandhi, who did not eat meat, survived off sweets and fruits on the ship because he was
afraid to ask which foods were meat free. Rather than engaging with others, Gandhi remained
reserved on the ship. The ship docked on September 29, 1988, and from there, Gandhi took a train to
London. Eventually, Gandhi arrived at the Victoria Hotel, where he stayed.
Gandhi described London to be "alive with ideas and movements" (Gandhi 29). Gandhi enrolled at
the Inner Temple University, and graduated in 1891. He was then admitted to the bar of England,
and began reading the ideas of David Thoreau on nonviolence. These ideas shaped Gandhi's beliefs
on handling matters without violence. He soon realized he could not be successful as a lawyer in
England and returned to India. However, this did not stop Gandhi's adventures. Gandhi soon
traveled to South Africa to work for a firm. In South Africa, Gandhi

Thebes that the country is safe again. Creon dictates that Eteocles, the patriot who defended the city,
will be buried while Polynices, the traitor who fought against Thebes, will be left unburied. Creon
explains to his citizens, "But whoever proves his loyalty to the state–/ I'll prize that man in death as
well as life" (234–235). Creon promises to reward citizens who are loyal and obedient to the state
even after their death. At this point, Creon appears to use his power to bring the citizens of Thebes
together as a state. However, after Creon discovers that Polynices has been buried, he is convinced
that the citizens have betrayed him and demands that his guards find the criminal in one day. Creon
shouts at his sentry, "I swear to Zeus as I still believe in Zeus, / if you don't find the man who buried
that corpse, / the very man, and produce him before my eyes, / simple death won't be enough for
you" (345–348). By swearing to Zeus, Creon attempts to assume the authority of the gods because
he knows the citizens will respect Zeus even if they don't respect his order. When Creon demands,
"find the very man", he forces the guards to fulfill his orders to save their lives. When Creon

O Connor's Short Stories, Good Country People, And A Good...
Sometimes the only thing that is constant in life is change. As time passes on, people, places, and
ideas are bound to change. Not only can people change, but whole societies and generations can as
well. As these changes happen, the differences between generations can become very large, and this
can eventually lead to conflict. In Flannery O'Connor's three short stories, "Everything that Rises
Must Converge," "Good County People," and "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the gaps between
generations causes problems. A skewed perspective about both the past and present causes
generational conflict in these stories, and O'Connor shows how this narrow–mindedness can
eventually lead to a catastrophic ending. Nostalgia for good country values skews the judgment of
characters in O'Connor's stories. In "Everything That Rises Must Converge" Julian's mother is an
example of someone who makes a bad decision caused by her dated views on society. Even with
multiple warnings from her son, she still hands a black child a "condescending penny" (O'Connor,
"Everything" 1090). Based on her perspective, what she is doing isn't wrong, but ... Show more

In "Good Country People," Joy has this due to her education, and though she has a lot of knowledge,
she lacks wisdom. She has a bad temperament, but people "excused this attitude because of the leg"
(O'Connor, "Good Country" 1093). Joy arrogance causes her aloofness and makes it difficult for her
to form lasting relationships. In "Everything That Rises Must Converge," Julian believes that he is a
better person than his mother since he is more educated than her. He thinks that since he has had a
formal education he has the right to "teach her a lesson" (O'Connor, "Everything" 1086). As Julian is

Flannery O'Conner and the use of grotesque character in...
"The representation of the grotesque is a characteristic of much 20th century writing" (Holman 61).
Almost all of O 'Connor 's short stories usually end in horrendous, freak fatalities or, at the very
least, a character 's emotional devastation. People have categorized O 'Connor 's work as "Southern
Gothic" (Walters 30). In Many of her short stories, A Good Man Is Hard To Find for example,
Flannery O 'Connor creates grotesque characters to illustrate the evil in people.
Written in 1953, A Good Man Is Hard To Find is one of O ' Connor 's most known pieces of work
and has received many awards. Throughout the story, you come across many twists and turns when
you least expect it. A Good Man Is Hard To Find is a story which includes religion, ... Show more

O 'Connor writes in ways that let us know the characters thoughts without really coming out and
telling us. O 'Connor often changes the mood of the story very quickly from amusement to horror
and vice – versa. In her stories, grotesque is often used to tie together the seriousness and the
comedic situations. "Flannery O 'Connor said of her work, 'the look of the fiction is going to be
wild... it is almost of necessity going to be violent and comic; because of the discrepancies it seeks
to combine. '" (Walters 7).
Many had their own opinions of O 'Connor 's work. "The literary works of Flannery O 'Connor often
contend that religious belief can only be consummated by direct confrontation with evil and for
those uncommitted and unprepared, tragedy seems inevitable." (Cook Online). Many of the early
critics never realized that O 'Connor 's worked with revelation, which at the time, others did not
(Reagan Online). As Frederick Asals once said, "Conflict, often violent conflict, is the very center of
Flannery O 'Connor 's fiction"(93). Although O 'Connor 's work was awarded greatly, it was also
often "dismissed" because of its "Gothic Violence" (Reagan Online). I have to agree with Dorothy
Walters when she says, "...nothing is more striking than her remarkable capacity to blend the comic
and the serious in a single view of reality." (13).
O 'Connor was very successful each

A Good Man Is Hard And Good Country People By Flannery O '...
According to Earl Nightingale, "When you judge others, you do not define them, you define
yourself." This is a common thing that many people do throughout their lifetime. People might
judge others to feel secure or to create an identity for themselves. Judging others by their appearance
or by the things they own should not be a reason to dislike them. While it may be a common thing to
do since we are all humans, it does come with some consequences. In Flannery O 'Connor 's short
stories "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Good Country People", readers realize that the main
characters tend to be judgmental about the people around them. Many of O'Connor's stories have
many religious themes in them, and both stories show it. O'Connor was a Catholic and like sharing
her strong beliefs in them when writing her stories to set a goal to the readers. As Ed. Sara
Constantakis states that O'Connor called this concept "Christian realism" (Constantakis, 2012). In
her story "Good Country People" she could have based her main character Hulga as herself since
she also had bad health. O'Connor was diagnosed with lupus at the age of twenty–five which was
the same disease that had killed her father. Flannery moved to her mother's house after many
treatments and later moved to a farm with her mother. It is a coincidence that both Hulga and
O'Connor lived in a farm and with their mothers at a young age. She would also base her stories in
the south and would often show it by using the word

O ' Connor 's `` A Good Man Is Hard For Find `` And ``...
Flannery O'Connor was a devout catholic whose writing was a reflection of the violence in the
temporal world. O'Connor suffered with lupus which had a grave impact on her life, but that didn't
stop her from publishing many stories that achieved awards. O'Connor's stories, "A Good Man Is
Hard to Find" and "Good Country People" are two examples of the talented woman's works that
gained popularity over the years. Through analyzing these short stories, one could insinuate that
there are many commonalities between the setting, characters, and themes of these stories.
In "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," O'Connor immediately introduces an older woman who was
completely against taking a family trip to Florida. Instead she was determined to redirect their trip
toward Tennessee. O'Connor includes brief details of the woman that could lead the reader to
believe that she isn't completely sane. For example, as the old lady gets into the car, "she was hiding
a basket with Pitty Sing, the cat, in it," (612). Fearing that the cat would miss her too much. The
woman also overdressed herself to the point where she was completely gaudy "in case of an
accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady," (612).
These silly characteristics create a witty scene for the road–trip.
Along the way, the family stops to grab some food at a barbecue joint and the grandmother discusses

Malcolm X : A Man Not Many People Truly Know About
A righteous and amazing individual known as Malcolm X was a man not many people truly know
about. Malcolm's enthusiasm in helping blacks really understand the world they live in and their
credence in their society should at the least be welcomed so a correlation can be established and the
world can focus on more pressing issues other than race. He was an angry, potent activist and
motivated extremist for all the right reasons. In his life he had to overcome many obstacles and
triumph over many predicaments that threatened him mentally and physically. Malcolm had
converted to a religion and he gave it his all. Malcolm believed in the religion and its leader more
than he believed in himself, just to find out things are never what they seem. People time after time
tried to end his life even before he was assassinated and though he realized that his days were
numbered still pushed forward. One thing we all learn in life is that your biggest enemy that you
will ever face is yourself; at times he fought himself more than anyone else.
In Malcolm's younger years he was quite a different type of person. At the time he was a drug dealer
and though he sold drug he used them himself. He was doing petty robberies in other cities, but he
was imprisoned for committing another crime. While in jail he went from being an young atheist

Analysis Of ' Dragon 's Village, Things Fall Apart, And...
In Africa and throughout the world, many countries have been forced to undergo the plight of
colonial rule. Along with this, comes varying external impacts which severely alter the cultural,
political, social, and personal identity of a country both during and long after the Colonial Era. The
evidence of these established changes can be found in the novels; Dragon's Village, Things Fall
Apart, and Man of the People surrounding China and Africa. Along with Deepa Mehta's period
films, Earth and Water and Iciar Bollain's juxtaposition piece, Even the Rain that emphasize the
circumstances that occurred in India and Bolivia.
A master at providing alternative context to Africa and concepts of decolonization, Chinua Achebe
wrote a great amount of literary work, including, Things Fall Apart (1956) and A Man of the People
(1966). The first novel, occurring both before and during Nigeria's neo colonial period, depicts the
relationship between Okonkwo and his Igbo tribe in Umuofia. With an identity heavily dependent
on his social status and structure, Achebe's protagonist communicates his extreme distaste for the
entrance of European colonizers:
"Okonkwo was well known throughout the nine villages and even beyond. His fame rested on solid
personal achievements. As a young man of eighteen he had brought honor to his village by throwing
Amalinze the Cat. Amalinze was the great wrestler who for seven years was unbeaten, from
Umuofia to Mbaino." (1.1)

The Man Of The People By Thomas Jefferson
From the moment Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, the United States of
America established itself as a nation built upon the foundation of equality. In the legendary
document, Jefferson proclaimed, "all men... are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable
rights... life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (Declaration)." Contradictorily, when the
separatists fled England for an auspicious future in North America, their treatment of the Native
American and Spanish occupants was inhumane, barbaric, and not becoming of a civilization
ingrained with the principles of equality. Moreover, the pioneers of the "free" world marginalized,
ostracized, and chimerically represented the African race more than any other minority.
Paradoxically dubbed the "man of the people", Thomas Jefferson illuminated his true interpretation
of equality in Notes on the State of Virginia. "We have had under our eyes the races of black and of
red men, they have never yet been viewed by us as subjects of natural history," he wrote. "I advance
it... that the blacks... are inferior to the whites in the endowments both of body and mind (history)."
Despite what the media conveys, this belief system lingered and particularly exists in the
Department of Justice. For years, our government controlled the amount of accessible, viable, and
financially rewarding opportunities for impoverished African Americans through the surreptitious
agendas of law enforcement. However, Los Angeles

Why the Levi Advertisements Were Successful Essay
Why the Levi Advertisements Were Successful
Levi's began to manufacture jeans around the 1870s, and jeans were originally working men's
clothing. During the 1950s people aged 13–19 became known as teenagers, prior to this people were
all either children or adults. Jeans became popular clothes for teenagers because they were seen as a
sign of rebellion against parents and authority. The jeans wearing teenagers then grew up and
become parents meaning that the next generation of youngsters saw older people wearing the jeans
and refused to wear them. This forced jeans to become unfashionable throughout the early 80s. In
the mid 80s Levi's hired a highly successful advertising company (Bartle Bogle ... Show more

Examples Of Corruption In The Man Of The People
Man of the People Corruption comes primarily in two forms evil and political in most cases when
discussing a government or person. Corruption in the government is typically due to money and the
desires of the people who or person who creates the government system. Corruption is viewed as
evil because a person with bad intentions or personal interest that only benefits him or she is
considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Chief Nanga is considered corrupt in many ways, but
in the African society, he was not considered corrupt as the book may allude to. The people of the
African society were accustomed to such behavior and treatment. Ultimately the concepts of
corruption are viewed differently depending on what that society may view as corrupt and what is
the norm. In the Man of the People, it discusses an African society were Odili and Nanga have a
personal feud over Edna, who leads to Odili quest to overthrow Nanga as the chief who is
considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Odili threatened to have him in Nanga in the
newspaper, but Nanga asked Odili did he have a feeling for Edna (Man of the People, p.g. 72). In
addition, to Odili personal feud with Nanga, he also had a feud with him politically. Odili is one of
the characters who recognizes Nanga corrupt ways and tries to rise up against his rule. Odili faces
tough obstacles gaining the people's trust because they were accustomed to the society in which they
lived in. Whether you asked in the city or the village Nanga was a man of the people (Man of the
People, p.g. 1). The people in the society did not view the government as corrupt because they have
endured corruption for so long and breaking societal norms are very difficult in a society. Thus, the
function corruption in the book serves as a small idea in the mind as the reader may connect
corruption to them as evil, while the corruption is a norm. Thus, the idea of corruption does not
really relate towards Nanga if his own people as a whole, do not view him as corrupt. Chief Nanga
tactics are legitimate tactics because he was more than likely accustomed to ruling and having as he,
please. Nanga is used to having any women he desires and anything that is within his reach. Nanga

Essay On A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings
A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings was published in 1955 by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This
book examines the magical and realistic elements of the story. The book starts with the two main
characters Pelayo and Elisenda's finding an old man with wings along the shore. Therefore, the
people begin to consider that he may be an angel. The surrounding community and Father Gonzaga
flock to visit this old man the following day. Eventually the crowds slender down and he flies away
one day. Throughout A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings the community had plenty of evidence
to conclude that the older man was indeed an angel and the story expresses how we treat a God like
figure. Once the community found out there was an older man with wings that could possibly be an
angel, large groups of people and Father Gonzaga began to come and take a look for themselves.
These people found out that he definitely had real wings and spoke a weird/different language.

Is Man Inherently Evil
The Evil Within In Thomas Hobbes book Leviathan he writes that man is selfish, poor, and brutish.
He believes that man is inherently evil and their selfishness leads to war and negative things (SAT).
I agree with Hobbes. Man is inherently evil because people spread hate and commit atrocities. One
reason it is evident that man is inherently evil is because people spread hatred. Social media is used
today on a day to day basis, it is such a huge platform for communication and entertainment. What
it's supposed to be used for though, may not be how people are using it. People take advantage of

Killed; shooter pledged ISIS Allegiance", they describe it as a definitive "Act of hate". The terrorist

the biggest Massacre in United States history. This shows how evil man can be because they commit
mass murders without a specific reason or outcome simply because man feels hate. If man was born
good, then why would they commit mass murders? It clearly shows man is evil because man killed
innocent people and a good person would never take someone's life. Also man destroys the world
they live in. In the article "Top 10 Environmental Issues Caused By Humanity–The Worst" it states
that deforestation, industrial mining, and untreated sewage are just some of the issues man has
created for this earth. Take industrial mining, mining for gold is for man's benefit. They do so much
destruction to the surface of the earth just to find a couple ounces of gold! This is an atrocity! So
much surface area is destroyed and mercury is released into the air harming the planet, only for the
benefit and selfishness of humanity. Brutalizing and destroying so much land for only a couple

a big atrocity for the earth and humankind. It affects every living thing on this planet and it is an evil
act against humanity because it harms the planet we live

Man Thinking Rhetorical Analysis
Emerson's essay is extremely insightful and interesting. It brings to light the many adversities of the
people of the community and "Man Thinking". Emerson explains that the reason people people are
afraid of certain concepts or action is that "Fear always springs from ignorance". By bringing this
concept to light he causes the reader to want to become "Man Thinking", or, someone who thinks for
themselves instead of being a puppet to society. His tone throughout the passage is persuasive and
passionate about what it is to be the true "Man Thinking". Throughout the essay Emerson uses many
contradicting topics. Emerson explains "Man Thinking" as someone who comes up with their own

In paragraph eight, Emerson explains that one of the influences on man is nature. The people and
events of the time period can effect how a person thinks. The nature around Man Thinking can also
be the society that the person is in. In society today, people tend to be put into groups. Emerson goes
on to explain that the mind is "tyrannized over by its own unifying instinct", meaning that people
want to belong, and by wanting to belong, they change who they are so that they conform to the
standards of society. Man Thinking is the person who steps out of the box that society has put them
in and refuses to accept the role that they have been giving. Instead of accepting everything that
people say and do, Man Thinking ask, "Why?", while Delegated Thinking does the exact opposite.
Delegated Thinking accepts everything, they do not step past the boundary. The little box that
society has place them in remains intact. Man Thinking is the leader, they show the way and create
new paths, not just for themselves, but for others, while Delegated Thinking follows the path, they
look at it as the truth and the only way to get around the obstacle. An example of Delegated

Similarities Between Good Country People And A Good Man Is...
In Flannery O'Connor's two short–stories, "Good Country People" and "A Good Man is Hard to

antagonist men reaffirm these perspectives. For example, the grandmother and Hulga represents a
delusional upper–class that views itself differently from the rest of the world, and the Misfit along
with Manley Pointer represent the masculine reality to that delusion. The grandmother's family
represents the way things actually are and serve as a scapegoat for her to pass judgment on, whereas
Mrs. Freeman, the housekeeper from "Good Country People" concentrates on the ghastly reality that

in philosophy. Their feelings of isolation coupled with the two's moral superiority complexes make
them supremely scathing women to be reckoned with, and most of the words that come out of their

difference separates the two characters. Hulga possesses an insane amount of knowledge and has no

This is also where the grandma and Hulga truly diverge, as one can easily infer that the grandma

look introspectively at herself and her own existence. Additionally, these defining attributes made it

Analysis Of Cosmopolitism In Things Fall Apart By Chinua...
It is unbelievable to think that an action of what a person does in the present, can either lead to
nothing or it can become a catastrophe event. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe writes about the
Nigerian culture through the events that happen to the main character which is Okonkowo. In
Cosmopolitism, Appiah writes about the different values, morals, and cultures people in the world
have and how people can live together despite having differences. The event that could have had a
different outcome was when the Abmae elders decided to execute the white missionary man and
later on the group of white people massacred the Abmae village. If the characters in the event were
more cosmopolitan with the concept of understanding each other and uncalled–for punishment, then
the event could have been a different outcome. When one applies Appiah's idea of understanding
each other and uncalled–for punishment in Cosmopolitism to the event in Things Fall Apart, the
event changes to when the elders would not have executed the white missionary man and therefore
there would be no massacre from the group of white people. When the white man riding a bicycle
came to the Abmae village, the villagers were horrified to see a foreigner. The white man who came
to Abmae did not cause any harm to the villagers and yet the elders of the Abmae village decided to
execute the white man. The villagers did not try to understand why the white man was here for. In

Pride in A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good Country People and Revelation
Pride is a very relevant issue in almost everyone's lives. Only when a person is forced to face his
pride can he begin to overcome it. Through the similar themes of her short stories, Flannery
O'Connor attempts to make her characters realize their pride and overcome it.
In "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the grandmother is a typical Southern lady. This constant effort to
present herself a Southern lady is where her pride is grounded. She criticizes the mother's traveling
outfit, but she herself is wearing a prim and proper–and probably uncomfortable–outfit so that

It cannot be known if she did, in fact, reconcile, but the reader can hope.
Similarly, Joy/Hulga is forced to face her pride in O'Connor's "Good Country People." Bruce L.
Edwards, Jr., notes that "Hulga sees herself as liberating people from their illusions, believing she
has none of her own" (901). Joy/Hulga's perspective on life is bleak and realistic. She achieves a
Ph.D. in philosophy and believes in the simplicity of believing in nothing. Her mother holds to
simple Southern beliefs that manners and tact determine a person's goodness. It is for this reason
that she views the Bible salesman as a good person. Joy/Hulga sees through her mother's shallow
country ways and despises her for it. Besides her beliefs, her wooden leg is also the center for her
pride. She "is as sensitive about the artificial leg as a peacock about his tail" (O'Connor, "Good
Country People" 404). She uses it for attention when stomping around the house and for security
when refusing to reveal its secrets to Manly Pointer, the Bible salesman. However, Manley is not as
shallow as he seems but turns out to bring Joy/Hulga to her point of grace. He robs her security and
leaves a helpless, vulnerable, and bewildered new person to reestablish her beliefs. Joy/Hulga has
had her pride stripped away and must now change herself.
Finally, O'Connor uses a similarly intellectual girl to bring Mrs. Turpin to a point of grace in
"Revelation." While in the waiting room, Mrs. Turpin

Analysis Of The Story ' Cathedral '
"Cathedral" The story "Cathedral" demonstrates that lack of sight does not necessarily prevent one
from perceiving things as they are, or live their life to the fullest. In the story, a middle–age blind
man, who is a friend to the narrator's wife, and used to be her boss at one point, visits the narrator
and his wife. The narrator has never interacted with blind people before, and all he knew about blind
people was what he had seen on television. Blind people are stereotypically portrayed on television
as slow moving, dull people, who never laugh. Based on this perception, the narrator was reluctant
to meet the blind man and doubted whether they were going to connect. This is evident when the
narrator states, "I wasn't enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind
bothered me" (Carver 1). The doubt the narrator had towards blind people his further evident when
the blind man arrives at his house. On seeing the blind man for the first time in the parking lot, the
narrator noticed that the blind man had a beard, but he thought that it was unusual. This is evident
when the narrator remarks, "This blind man, feature this, he was wearing a full beard! A beard on a
blind man! Too much, I say" (Carver 4). The skeptical view, the narrator had towards blind people is
further brought out when the narrator was being told about the death of the blind man's wife. The
narrator could not imagine a man marrying a woman, living together, and having sex with

  • 1. Presenting People in Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two... Presenting People in Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes, and Island Man In this essay I will compare the ways in which the poets present people in "Two Scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes" by Lawrence Ferlinghetti and "Island Man" by Grace Nichols. In this essay I will look at the shape, structure, poetic devices and language in both poems. Firstly I will examine what the two poems are about and the ways how both poets portray the people in the poems. The poem "Two Scavengers in a truck, two beautiful people in a Mercedes" is about a coincidence meeting of the two working class scavengers and a beautiful, rich couple in Mercedes. This poem was set in America and was aimed to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... There is no punctuation used throughout the poem but capital letters are. Reading this poem I have noticed that Lawrence Ferlinghetti uses lots of poetic devices such as alliteration "short skirt", repetition "elegant" "and" "the", and similes "looking down like some gargoyle Quasimodo". This phrase makes me think of vultures (garbage men) (types of bird that eat dead meat) gazing upon their pray (couple in the Mercedes.) The language in the poem is very descriptive and vivid. The poet introduces color to the poem too, to show more vivid images. He did that to attract more of the reader's attention. E.g. He used color to describe the yellow garbage truck and the traffic light. From this we can see that the poet uses color effectively. The poem "Island Man" was written by Grace Nichols. Its about an immigrant from the West Indies, dreaming about sound of Caribbean sea. He wakes up to the roar of London traffic. The poet is commenting on the difficulty for immigrant adapt to a urban environment. The poem "Island Man" gives us a picture of two different worlds and is based on dreams and reality. The poem is divided into 6 stanzas. I think that the stanzas are used to contrast the experiences that the island man have had. There are two distinct parts of the poem, Caribbean and London. In my opinion looking at this poem the lines reflect the shape and action of the sea. The wave line shape of the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Theme Of Redemption And Good Country People By Flannery O... Flannery O 'Connor 's stories "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", and "Good Country People" both present very similar themes. Within these stories is the theme of redemption, and the way relationships affect the way people interact with each other seem to be a core issue she struggles with. Both stories have a protagonist that have to deal with some type of villain who has little to no belief, while their presence of faith that there is good in people gets them into the horrible situations that they find themselves in. She uses some of the same aspects in both stories in very different ways. The characters are a big part of her stories, the conflicts that arise in the story, and the symbolism that is used. This paper will explore how faith can lead us to have false hope and why it is important to remain aware. In both stories there are seemingly different protagonist. First there is Hulga. She is someone that rude, harsh, with Doctorate in Philosophy, and is appalled by the idea of love. Then you have a grandmother, who is always looking back on the old days and a slight sense of wonder. From what O 'Connor gives the reader in their descriptions, there is not much similarities happening. However, under the surface of these characters the reader can see that both characters are somewhat shallow and do not see this about themselves. Hulga, even though she is highly educated she is a believer in nothing, all she knows is what to say and when to say it. This becomes obvious when ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Hitler Was A Man Of The People Hitler was a man of the people. He was a great orator and was talented at public speaking. Using that gift he was able to rally a crippled Germany behind him to become one of the world's strongest super powers pre WWII. Hitler was loved by his people and feared by his enemies. His following of those early philosophers was how he founded the Nazi party. He would have pleased Machiavelli with his ability to be both the fox and the lion. Hitler was cunning and smart, he was able to turn himself around from seemingly homeless to the head of the German state. He was also able to rally the Germans behind him, he was courageous and strong and that appealed to the German people. "Extinguish the line of Princes" was a quote from Machiavelli meaning that the new Prince, in an effort to maintain his position, should remove anyone who posed a threat to his power. Hitler did just that when he elected himself Dictator and dissolved the parliament beneath him. He gave himself ultimate control over Germany. Hitler would have disappointed Machiavelli by being reckless. All of Machiavelli's work boils down to a Prince gaining power and using any means necessary to keep it. The German war machine, while would have been impressive, caused Hitler to fall to exactly what Machiavelli warned against. Machiavelli is quoted saying "He who is blinded by ambition, raises himself to a position whence he cannot mount higher, must thereafter fall with the greatest loss." Such a quote is very fitting of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Analysing the Two Poems of: Island Man and Two Scavengers... Analysing the two poems of: Island man and Two Scavengers in a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes and how the poet creates conflict Firstly, we began to read Island Man as a class in lessons. This is written by Grace Nichols and is published in a book titled "Anthology". The surface meaning of the poem is based on a man who used to live on a Caribbean island and still dreams of this place even now when he lives in London. At a first glace of the poem, it comes across as short and sharp, for example, the first line of the poem consists of the word "Morning". This may look as though a far from exciting way for a poem to begin, but from this, the author is starting to create an image in the readers head and this is setting the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... An echoing technique is used with the repetition of the line "groggily groggily" when the next stanza begins with "muffling muffling" emphasizing that the character can't get the city noises out of his head. These sounds give the feeling of being enclosed somewhere, which is portraying his feelings towards London city. The lack of punctuation in the poem lets it run freely, again, this could reflect on the characters feelings of wanting to be free and live naturally on an island. The irregular lengths and placing of lines is to form a visual pattern resembling the shore and tide. 'Island Man' is just nineteen lines in length but the writer seems to capture his feelings well and makes you feel sympathy for the character. However the conflict is shown within the two places and how the man feels about these places. He obviously strongly dislikes the dullness of London and city life, and wishes he was living on an island where he imagines himself to be. The poet shows this by creating two completely different images in the readers head, one being described as a beautiful and warming place, and the other a dull, noisy and polluted place. Lawrence Ferlinghetti writes 'Two Scavengers In a Truck, Two Beautiful People in a Mercedes'. The poem's surface meaning is the writer recalling a moment in a life when a garbage truck and a Mercedes were both stopped at traffic lights. It is built ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. The Unknown Citizen By Auden "The Unknown Citizen," written by W. H. Auden, is a poem that describes a man who lived a life most people would see as ideal. The man illustrated by this poem did what society expected him to do, which resulted in a model life. This poem, however, can be seen in more than one way. Some may see the story in the poem as a description of a man who had an unfulfilling life because he did exactly what was expected of him. Instead of trying something new, exploring the world, or making a change, the man did what everyone else regarded as acceptable. W. H. Auden's poem can be seen from two perspectives: the man who lived an ideal life that many people sought to have or the man who lived an unfulfilling, ordinary life which caused him to blend in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... W. H. Auden's poem, "The Unknown Citizen," is a great example of this because one can find at least two meanings within the poem. One person could see the poem as a description of a perfect man while someone else could see the poem as a message to be unique and make a change in the world. The man in the poem fulfilled society's expectations, but at the same time, the man may not have had a fulfilling life. These two ideas could not be the only interpretations of the poem. Other readers may discover their own meanings or explanations of the poem. • 13. Flannery O'Connor's A Good Man is Hard to Find and Good... "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" and "Good Country People" are two short stories written by Flannery O'Connor during her short lived writing career. Despite the literary achievements of O'Connor's works, she is often criticized for the grotesqueness of her characters and endings of her short stories and novels. Her writings have been described as "understated, orderly, unexperimental fiction, with a Southern backdrop and a Roman Catholic vision, in defiance, it would seem, of those restless innovators who preceded her and who came into prominence after her death"(Friedman 4). "A Good Man Is Hard To Find" and "Good Country People" are both set in the South, and O'Connor explores the tension between the old and new South. The stories are tow ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... O'Connor describes the children's mother in contrast to the grandmother by what they are wearing; thus their clothes represent the age from which they are. The Children's mother "still had on slacks and still had her head tied up in a green kerchief, but the grandmother had on navy blue straw sailor hat with a bunch of white dot in the print"(O'Connor 118). The children's mother is representative of the New South in which the Southern Lady is becoming less of a central figure within society. A lady of the old south would never wear slacks and tie her hair up in a kerchief to go out in public. Under an old south mentality these actions would be considered very unlady like. O'Connor illustrates the tension between the old and the new south by the constant struggle between the grandmother, her son, and the daughter–in–law. O'Connor also poses the contrast between the old and new South in her short story "Good Country People". Mrs. Hopewell and Mrs. Freeman represent the old South because of the way in which they carry themselves and their traditional beliefs and values. Mrs. Freeman works for Mrs. Hopewell who states "the reason for her keepin her so long was that they were not trash. They were good country people"(O'Connor 272). He began to develop love and admiration towards nature, wildlife, family and community. Additionally, he discovered love for acting and performing. There wasn't much he could do about it, but he took advantage of his opportunity. During school he would entertain his friends by imitating his all time hero, Charlie Chaplin (Walt Disney, Biography). Without much of an economic advantage, he continued to flourish in his talent for performing. At night, when his parents were asleep, Walt would sneak out and perform skits on local theaters. As Walt realized many things, Walt found out that he was born to make people smile and make the world a better place for good (disney.go.com). • 17. Comparison Of Good Country People And A Good Man Is Hard... In both "Good Country People" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find" the definition of good is somewhat skewed, when I read the stories the people who are depicted as good are actually quite bad. In "Good Country People", the sheer fictional elements such as Hulga having a wooden leg only for it to be stolen by a Bible salesman with a nasty habit of stealing from others on his travels is an interesting development that defines Hulga's revelation in such that keeps the reader satisfied. Such elements also show that no matter the person, however they are, can be capable of evil and that not everyone by appearance is as they seem. To add on to this, both Pointer coming across as a well– raised Christian and Hulga's mother always being so conscious and judgmental of her choices further strengthen that ugliness in such terms as one being grotesque stems from the nature of a person for who they are as an individual. "Lord. He bored me to death but he was so sincere and genuine I couldn't be rude to him. He was just good country people, you know– just the salt of the earth." • 19. Technology's Impact On Man And Society : Does Technology... Does technology affect people or do people affect technology? Technology influences each appearance about our daily lives, it has an effect on the growth of the economy, and our culture. We all use it every day for different purpose and people take it for granted, and without knowing about what brought that technology into existence and never actually notice the level of impact it has on us until we have no telephone, transport, or electricity. Improvements in technology have immensely expanded our living standards. Although the fact that we are experiencing very high inflation rates and the rates of unemployment are very high people are still feeding better and dressing better and are as matter of fact living more convenient lives. Meanwhile older generations have a hard time accepting the new technologies and continue to favour technology they are addicted to. To interpret technology meaning first we need a universal definition: "Machinery and devices developed from scientific knowledge." But one of my favourite definition of the term comes from the book of Emmanuel G. Mesthene's terrific little 1970 book, Technological Change: Its Impact on Man and Society: "We define technology as the organization of knowledge for the achievement of practical purposes." Technology can also be defined as the expansion to which a society manipulates its environment and this also raised concerns, its poor utilization has resulted into the pollution of the environment and it has also cause ... This question seems to loom in the one's mind after reading Flannery O'Connor's two stories, "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Good Country People". Not only does O'Connor portray gruesome imagery throughout both stories, she also incorporates aspects of religion. What makes these stories captivating is the element of pure shock during the climax. Nevertheless, the short stories both help the readers visualize how judging others or jumping to conclusions about certain individuals can have a dramatic conclusion. O'Connor enlightens the readers about how judging a book by its cover or jumping to certain conclusions about others can be fatal. This is shown in "Good Country People" when the main character Hulga gets too comfortable with a bible salesman named Manley Pointer. Even though Pointer seems simple or of "good country people", he is the polar opposite. In fact, he has a secret identity and cons disabled women. However, the reader does not understand this shocking twist until Pointer gets close to Hulga and convinces her that they are in love just to steal her prosthetic leg. It also shows that the village is entirely based on their fantasy about a man who is dead. The people make the dead man a symbol of improvement, when really it is their fantasy which they portray to change the atmosphere around them. The villagers have a fantasy in their mind about the drowned man. They show their admiration and project qualities onto him which they find to be valuable. Many people were paralyzed with regard and attraction which can be shown when Marquiez states, "Fascinated by his huge size and his beauty the women then decided to make him some pants from a large piece of sac..." (Marquiez 3). This shows that the women had such a strong admiration and falling toward this dead old man that even without knowing him, they judged him by his beauty. They called him Esteban because of his looks and because they're perceived that "if a man should be handsome, they would be royal and smart." Physical characteristics and racial differences may be interpreted as two distinguishing traits that separate us. I think it's what keeps us apart. That leaves several abstract questions that the film Crash illustrates. What are the origins of personal prejudice? Do individual experiences fuel standing stereotypes? Is it easier to perpetuate existing stereotypes because "things will never change?" Can people battle internal struggles within their own ethnic group? What prohibits us from overcoming these prejudices? The writers of the Crash managed to extend my viewing experience beyond the 90 minute film, thus forcing me to analyze my ... Perhaps stereotypes like that have maintained their prevalence because there are so many people that perpetuate them. It is often believed that all young black men are destined to be thugs, criminals and drug dealers. Additionally it is a common statistic that the majority of incarcerated males are African American. As a young black man, it must be difficult to break free of that stereotype. "Things will never change." That attitude along with the perpetuation of existing stereotypes may be largely responsible for negative racial longevity. Ludacris' character was one of the most interesting to me. Here was this articulate young black man that spent his life stealing cars from white people. "Rap music is the music of the oppressor," he said. Knowing Flannery O'Connor's religious conviction, one cannot overlook this underlying tone in both of her regarded stories "A Good Man is hard to Find" and "Good Country People". It is often said of those who stand outside of religious conviction that faith seems to come in handy to people only when it is valuable to get them out of a predicament, of which they have likely placed themselves through insensitive behavior and decisions. In such a desperate attempt to appeal to faith, one only finds emptiness and a fate that leaves them hopeless or even dead. • 31. A Good Man Is Hard And Good Country People By Flannery O '... In the short stories "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Good Country People," Flannery O'Connor writes about violence. The violence in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" surprises the reader because it is unexpected. Flannery O'Connor lulls the reader into a false sense of security and then pulls the rug out from under you at the end of the story. The violence is found within the character "The Misfit" and in his murderous actions. The violence in "Good Country People" is found within the character Hulga Hopewell and her hostility toward her mother, religion, and herself. Flannery O'Connor uses violence to criticize the hypocrisy of certain ideas and accepted cultural and religious norms. Textual evidence is necessary in this essay to prove the idea that Flannery O'Connor uses violence in these two stories to criticize the hypocrisy in the characters. In Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the hypocrisy and selfishness of the grandmother brings about all of the conflict in the story. As John Desmond notes in his essay "Flannery O'Connor's Misfit and the Mystery of Evil," "her [the grandmother's] lying and selfishness lead directly to the accident and the subsequent murder of her family" (133). Not only can people change, but whole societies and generations can as well. As these changes happen, the differences between generations can become very large, and this can eventually lead to conflict. In Flannery O'Connor's three short stories, "Everything that Rises Must Converge," "Good County People," and "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the gaps between generations causes problems. A skewed perspective about both the past and present causes generational conflict in these stories, and O'Connor shows how this narrow–mindedness can eventually lead to a catastrophic ending. Nostalgia for good country values skews the judgment of characters in O'Connor's stories. In "Everything That Rises Must Converge" Julian's mother is an example of someone who makes a bad decision caused by her dated views on society. This is a common thing that many people do throughout their lifetime. People might judge others to feel secure or to create an identity for themselves. Judging others by their appearance or by the things they own should not be a reason to dislike them. While it may be a common thing to do since we are all humans, it does come with some consequences. In Flannery O 'Connor 's short stories "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "Good Country People", readers realize that the main characters tend to be judgmental about the people around them. Many of O'Connor's stories have many religious themes in them, and both stories show it. O'Connor was a Catholic and like sharing her strong beliefs in them when writing her stories to set a goal to the readers. As Ed. Sara Constantakis states that O'Connor called this concept "Christian realism" (Constantakis, 2012). In her story "Good Country People" she could have based her main character Hulga as herself since she also had bad health. O'Connor was diagnosed with lupus at the age of twenty–five which was the same disease that had killed her father. Flannery moved to her mother's house after many treatments and later moved to a farm with her mother. O'Connor suffered with lupus which had a grave impact on her life, but that didn't stop her from publishing many stories that achieved awards. O'Connor's stories, "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" and "Good Country People" are two examples of the talented woman's works that gained popularity over the years. Through analyzing these short stories, one could insinuate that there are many commonalities between the setting, characters, and themes of these stories. In "A Good Man Is Hard to Find," O'Connor immediately introduces an older woman who was completely against taking a family trip to Florida. Instead she was determined to redirect their trip toward Tennessee. O'Connor includes brief details of the woman that could lead the reader to believe that she isn't completely sane. For example, as the old lady gets into the car, "she was hiding a basket with Pitty Sing, the cat, in it," (612). Fearing that the cat would miss her too much. The woman also overdressed herself to the point where she was completely gaudy "in case of an accident, anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady," (612). The Man Of The People By Thomas Jefferson From the moment Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, the United States of America established itself as a nation built upon the foundation of equality. In the legendary document, Jefferson proclaimed, "all men... are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights... life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (Declaration)." Contradictorily, when the separatists fled England for an auspicious future in North America, their treatment of the Native American and Spanish occupants was inhumane, barbaric, and not becoming of a civilization ingrained with the principles of equality. Moreover, the pioneers of the "free" world marginalized, ostracized, and chimerically represented the African race more than any other minority. Paradoxically dubbed the "man of the people", Thomas Jefferson illuminated his true interpretation of equality in Notes on the State of Virginia. "We have had under our eyes the races of black and of red men, they have never yet been viewed by us as subjects of natural history," he wrote. "I advance it... that the blacks... are inferior to the whites in the endowments both of body and mind (history)." • 55. Examples Of Corruption In The Man Of The People Man of the People Corruption comes primarily in two forms evil and political in most cases when discussing a government or person. Corruption in the government is typically due to money and the desires of the people who or person who creates the government system. Corruption is viewed as evil because a person with bad intentions or personal interest that only benefits him or she is considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Chief Nanga is considered corrupt in many ways, but in the African society, he was not considered corrupt as the book may allude to. The people of the African society were accustomed to such behavior and treatment. Ultimately the concepts of corruption are viewed differently depending on what that society may view as corrupt and what is the norm. In the Man of the People, it discusses an African society were Odili and Nanga have a personal feud over Edna, who leads to Odili quest to overthrow Nanga as the chief who is considered corrupt. In the Man of the People, Odili threatened to have him in Nanga in the newspaper, but Nanga asked Odili did he have a feeling for Edna (Man of the People, p.g. 72). In addition, to Odili personal feud with Nanga, he also had a feud with him politically. Odili is one of the characters who recognizes Nanga corrupt ways and tries to rise up against his rule. Odili faces tough obstacles gaining the people's trust because they were accustomed to the society in which they lived in. Whether you asked in the city or the village Nanga was a man of the people (Man of the People, p.g. 1). The people in the society did not view the government as corrupt because they have endured corruption for so long and breaking societal norms are very difficult in a society. Thus, the function corruption in the book serves as a small idea in the mind as the reader may connect corruption to them as evil, while the corruption is a norm. Thus, the idea of corruption does not really relate towards Nanga if his own people as a whole, do not view him as corrupt. Chief Nanga tactics are legitimate tactics because he was more than likely accustomed to ruling and having as he, please. Nanga is used to having any women he desires and anything that is within his reach. Nanga is a chief, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 57. Essay On A Very Old Man With Enormous Wings A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings was published in 1955 by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. This book examines the magical and realistic elements of the story. The book starts with the two main characters Pelayo and Elisenda's finding an old man with wings along the shore. Therefore, the people begin to consider that he may be an angel. The surrounding community and Father Gonzaga flock to visit this old man the following day. Eventually the crowds slender down and he flies away one day. Throughout A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings the community had plenty of evidence to conclude that the older man was indeed an angel and the story expresses how we treat a God like figure. Once the community found out there was an older man with wings that could possibly be an angel, large groups of people and Father Gonzaga began to come and take a look for themselves. These people found out that he definitely had real wings and spoke a weird/different language. However people wanted a reaction out of him so they began to burn him. The man didn't get mad, he was just in a large amount of pain. This showed he was a powerful man that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This book looked at a supernatural character and dealt with magical and realistic aspects. During the course of the story, the community had a large amount of evidence that the man was an angel and it represented how humans mistreat God like figures. The community had evidence of a special person with wings, different language and a powerful figure. Therefore, they should have believed it to be a real angel. Also these people disrespected and looked past the angel due to the fact of it not being what they pictures a God figure or angle to seem like. Even though in reality it had very similar elements of how a real God figure would arrive on earth. • 59. Is Man Inherently Evil The Evil Within In Thomas Hobbes book Leviathan he writes that man is selfish, poor, and brutish. He believes that man is inherently evil and their selfishness leads to war and negative things (SAT). I agree with Hobbes. Man is inherently evil because people spread hate and commit atrocities. One reason it is evident that man is inherently evil is because people spread hatred. Social media is used today on a day to day basis, it is such a huge platform for communication and entertainment. What it's supposed to be used for though, may not be how people are using it. People take advantage of the fact that you can be anonymous on social media and say hurtful things to people. They may make fun of someone's appearance, say racist things, or ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example the recent Gay Club Pulse shooting in Orlando. In the article "Orlando Shooting: 49 Killed; shooter pledged ISIS Allegiance", they describe it as a definitive "Act of hate". The terrorist attack claimed 49 lives of the LGBT community and injured many more. The Pulse shooting was the biggest Massacre in United States history. This shows how evil man can be because they commit mass murders without a specific reason or outcome simply because man feels hate. If man was born good, then why would they commit mass murders? It clearly shows man is evil because man killed innocent people and a good person would never take someone's life. Also man destroys the world they live in. In the article "Top 10 Environmental Issues Caused By Humanity–The Worst" it states that deforestation, industrial mining, and untreated sewage are just some of the issues man has created for this earth. Take industrial mining, mining for gold is for man's benefit. They do so much destruction to the surface of the earth just to find a couple ounces of gold! This is an atrocity! So much surface area is destroyed and mercury is released into the air harming the planet, only for the benefit and selfishness of humanity. Brutalizing and destroying so much land for only a couple ounces of gold shows the selfishness of man. This proves man is evil because destroying the earth is a big atrocity for the earth and humankind. It affects every living thing on this planet and it is an evil act against humanity because it harms the planet we live ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 61. Man Thinking Rhetorical Analysis Emerson's essay is extremely insightful and interesting. It brings to light the many adversities of the people of the community and "Man Thinking". Emerson explains that the reason people people are afraid of certain concepts or action is that "Fear always springs from ignorance". By bringing this concept to light he causes the reader to want to become "Man Thinking", or, someone who thinks for themselves instead of being a puppet to society. His tone throughout the passage is persuasive and passionate about what it is to be the true "Man Thinking". Throughout the essay Emerson uses many contradicting topics. Emerson explains "Man Thinking" as someone who comes up with their own thoughts and ways. However, in paragraph twelve he states that, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In paragraph eight, Emerson explains that one of the influences on man is nature. The people and events of the time period can effect how a person thinks. The nature around Man Thinking can also be the society that the person is in. In society today, people tend to be put into groups. Emerson goes on to explain that the mind is "tyrannized over by its own unifying instinct", meaning that people want to belong, and by wanting to belong, they change who they are so that they conform to the standards of society. Man Thinking is the person who steps out of the box that society has put them in and refuses to accept the role that they have been giving. Instead of accepting everything that people say and do, Man Thinking ask, "Why?", while Delegated Thinking does the exact opposite. Delegated Thinking accepts everything, they do not step past the boundary. The little box that society has place them in remains intact. Man Thinking is the leader, they show the way and create new paths, not just for themselves, but for others, while Delegated Thinking follows the path, they look at it as the truth and the only way to get around the obstacle. An example of Delegated Thinking would be someone who drops out of school because society has lead them to believe that they cannot be successful in life. However, an example of ... • 63. Similarities Between Good Country People And A Good Man Is... In Flannery O'Connor's two short–stories, "Good Country People" and "A Good Man is Hard to Find", Marxist and feminist aspects of both pieces are prominent in how the protagonist women and antagonist men reaffirm these perspectives. For example, the grandmother and Hulga represents a delusional upper–class that views itself differently from the rest of the world, and the Misfit along with Manley Pointer represent the masculine reality to that delusion. The grandmother's family represents the way things actually are and serve as a scapegoat for her to pass judgment on, whereas Mrs. Freeman, the housekeeper from "Good Country People" concentrates on the ghastly reality that the supposed "good country people" idealize. When the Misfit and his ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moreover, the grandma from "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and Hulga from "Good Country People" parallel in several ways. While the grandma dresses as an upper–class lady, believing to be morally superior to everyone, Hulga also believes she is better than most people because of her PhD. in philosophy. Their feelings of isolation coupled with the two's moral superiority complexes make them supremely scathing women to be reckoned with, and most of the words that come out of their mouth are harsh with little regard to how their ill–chosen words affect others. However, one stark difference separates the two characters. Hulga possesses an insane amount of knowledge and has no one to converse with. Her mother and Mrs. Freeman would both rather entertain platitudes about the good country life than be involved in stimulating conversation about anything of interest to Hulga. This is also where the grandma and Hulga truly diverge, as one can easily infer that the grandma would rather indulge in frivolous and upper–class conversations about nothing of importance than look introspectively at herself and her own existence. Additionally, these defining attributes made it easy for both women to be taken advantage ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. Analysis Of Cosmopolitism In Things Fall Apart By Chinua... It is unbelievable to think that an action of what a person does in the present, can either lead to nothing or it can become a catastrophe event. In Things Fall Apart, Achebe writes about the Nigerian culture through the events that happen to the main character which is Okonkowo. In Cosmopolitism, Appiah writes about the different values, morals, and cultures people in the world have and how people can live together despite having differences. The event that could have had a different outcome was when the Abmae elders decided to execute the white missionary man and later on the group of white people massacred the Abmae village. If the characters in the event were more cosmopolitan with the concept of understanding each other and uncalled–for punishment, then the event could have been a different outcome. When one applies Appiah's idea of understanding each other and uncalled–for punishment in Cosmopolitism to the event in Things Fall Apart, the event changes to when the elders would not have executed the white missionary man and therefore there would be no massacre from the group of white people. When the white man riding a bicycle came to the Abmae village, the villagers were horrified to see a foreigner. The white man who came to Abmae did not cause any harm to the villagers and yet the elders of the Abmae village decided to execute the white man. The villagers did not try to understand why the white man was here for. In Cosmopolitism, Appiah states "One truth we hold ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Comparing Pride in A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good... Pride in A Good Man is Hard to Find, Good Country People and Revelation Pride is a very relevant issue in almost everyone's lives. Only when a person is forced to face his pride can he begin to overcome it. Through the similar themes of her short stories, Flannery O'Connor attempts to make her characters realize their pride and overcome it. In "A Good Man is Hard to Find," the grandmother is a typical Southern lady. This constant effort to present herself a Southern lady is where her pride is grounded. She criticizes the mother's traveling outfit, but she herself is wearing a prim and proper–and probably uncomfortable–outfit so that "anyone seeing her dead on the highway would know at once that she was a lady" (O'Connor, "A ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It cannot be known if she did, in fact, reconcile, but the reader can hope. Similarly, Joy/Hulga is forced to face her pride in O'Connor's "Good Country People." Bruce L. Edwards, Jr., notes that "Hulga sees herself as liberating people from their illusions, believing she has none of her own" (901). Joy/Hulga's perspective on life is bleak and realistic. She achieves a Ph.D. in philosophy and believes in the simplicity of believing in nothing. Her mother holds to simple Southern beliefs that manners and tact determine a person's goodness. It is for this reason that she views the Bible salesman as a good person. Joy/Hulga sees through her mother's shallow country ways and despises her for it. Besides her beliefs, her wooden leg is also the center for her pride. She "is as sensitive about the artificial leg as a peacock about his tail" (O'Connor, "Good Country People" 404). She uses it for attention when stomping around the house and for security when refusing to reveal its secrets to Manly Pointer, the Bible salesman. However, Manley is not as shallow as he seems but turns out to bring Joy/Hulga to her point of grace. He robs her security and leaves a helpless, vulnerable, and bewildered new person to reestablish her beliefs. Joy/Hulga has had her pride stripped away and must now change herself. Finally, O'Connor uses a similarly intellectual girl to bring Mrs. Turpin to a point of grace in "Revelation." While in the waiting room, Mrs. Turpin ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Analysis Of The Story ' Cathedral ' "Cathedral" The story "Cathedral" demonstrates that lack of sight does not necessarily prevent one from perceiving things as they are, or live their life to the fullest. In the story, a middle–age blind man, who is a friend to the narrator's wife, and used to be her boss at one point, visits the narrator and his wife. The narrator has never interacted with blind people before, and all he knew about blind people was what he had seen on television. Blind people are stereotypically portrayed on television as slow moving, dull people, who never laugh. Based on this perception, the narrator was reluctant to meet the blind man and doubted whether they were going to connect. This is evident when the narrator states, "I wasn't enthusiastic about his visit. He was no one I knew. And his being blind bothered me" (Carver 1). The doubt the narrator had towards blind people his further evident when the blind man arrives at his house. On seeing the blind man for the first time in the parking lot, the narrator noticed that the blind man had a beard, but he thought that it was unusual. This is evident when the narrator remarks, "This blind man, feature this, he was wearing a full beard! A beard on a blind man! Too much, I say" (Carver 4). The skeptical view, the narrator had towards blind people is further brought out when the narrator was being told about the death of the blind man's wife.
