Channel 4 was first broadcasted on air for the British population on the 2nd November
1982 and became owned by the Channel Four Television Corporation in the early 90’s.
It was the fourth ever TV programmer in Britain and now has over 10 other “sister”
channels.
Channel 4’s public service remit is defined by the Communications Act 2003 which
states there should be a “broad range of high quality and diverse programming” which
is further explained by:
1.
demonstrates innovation, experiment and creativity in the form and content of
programmes;
2.
appeals to the tastes and interests of a culturally diverse society;
3.
makes a significant contribution to meeting the need for the licensed public
service channels to include programmes of an educational nature and other
programmes of educative value;
4.
exhibits a distinctive character.
However, this Act was updated in 2010 to become The Digital Economy Act which is all
the same, apart from a more detailed remit and a few extra points.
