A Book by Thomas L. Friedman
Presented by Carrie Gaxiola
What is a flat world?
Global Community:
A level playing field for all countries.

• 10 flatteners
•Knowledge & Brainpower: Source of
wealth today
Quick History: The Three Eras of Globalization
Globalization 1.0
1492-1800
Open trade between Old World and New World

Globalization 2.0
1800-2000 Industrial Revolution, Emergence of Multinational
Companies, etc. Few Setbacks: WWI, WWII, Depression

Globalization 3.0
2000-

The Flat World Platform
Flattener #1
Fall of the Berlin Wall 11/9/89

* This Tipped the Balance: Toward free-market orientated
government
Flattener #2
New Connectivity
• Commercial

Web Browser: Ability to

browse
• Web, Telephone modem
• HTML, URL
•HTTP

Effect:
Brought the internet to the masses
-Web debut in 1991, within the next five years, users on the
internet went from 600,000 to 40 million, the number of
users doubled every 53 days
New Demands
New atmosphere with computers, software,
telecommunications
Flattener #3
Workflow Software
•Quiet Revolution
•Enabled business to be done quicker, better, virtually seamlessly
[design, display, management, and collaboration]
• Standards [JPEG, XML]

•Even in practice [PayPal & eBay], ecommerce, payroll
Flattener #4
Uploading
•Send Data

•Community Developed
•Blogs, Wikis, Podcasts
•Anyone can have dominance
•Producers and consumers

•Potential to be the most disruptive of all the
flatteners
Flattener #5
Outsourcing
• Started

in late 80s with Texas Instruments, General

Electric
•Fiber optics: Allowed connection between U.S. and India
•Y2K bug: Tedious work- India emerged as the solution
with the techies
Relationship between U.S. and India is a flattening
force

"Fortune favors the prepared
mind."
--Louis Pasteur
Flattener #6
Off-shoring
• Relocation of a company to foreign land
•Significant event: China joined the WTO
China: A good example
•Factories moved to Chinaproduced same product
•Cheaper taxes, labor, energy, and
health care costs

*Authors warns this may be a short strategy and businesses should take
caution
Flattener #7
Supply Chaining
•Living Organism: Like a River
•Use of technology to streamline items, sales, distribution, shipping,
etc.
Horizontal Collaboration
Flattener #8
In-sourcing
One company performs duties for another company.
This is a way to fill in the gaps within the horizontal global
supply chain

Example:
UPS performs repairs for Toshiba
Flattener #9
In-Forming
The ability to access vast amounts of
information.
The enablers:

And, OF COURSE…..

“If I can operate Google, I can find anything. Google is
like God. God is wireless, God is everywhere, and God
sees everything.
Any questions in the world, you ask Google.”
-Alan Cohen, VP Airespace
Flattener #10
Steroids
Computational compatibility: input/output

•File sharing, Napster, IM
•Phone calls over internet: Skype, Magicjack
•Videoconferencing

•Mobile wireless technologies
•Cell phones w/internet access
The Triple Convergence
Convergence I
•Combination of all flatteners creates a new platform which allows:
•Innovation, production, education, research
Convergence II
•After all flatteners adapted by business- form a more efficient base
•Shift from vertical organization to horizontal organization

Convergence III
•Demographic
Countries entering the playing field that were previously locked out
China, India, Russia, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and
Central Asia
•Entering as very eager & very competitive
Tip of the iceberg….
In the future, we will see a
major shift in the social,
cultural, political, and
economic models and
values
“The Untouchables”
Synthesizers, Explainers, Leveragers, Versatilists
The Specialists
Brain surgeons
Madonna

Local Anchors
Dentists
Waitress
Plumbers

* The “people person” is in
demand
* Passion for what you do
* “The personal touch”
“Natural talent trumps geography…”
-Bill Gates

Middle Jobs
Horizontal
Collaborators:
management,
sales, marketing
*Those who feel
comfortable
working for a global
company
Competition… Preparation
We need to emphasize:
•Self Learning
•Right brain skills [music]
•Teach curiousity and passion- can be more important than skill

The Fear… The
Crisis…

Elements are quietly joining to create a
storm: political, demographic, and social
•Disinterest in math and science
•Lack of funding for education
•U.S. is falling behind
We need to change….
United States

China & India
Imagine…..

PEACE
Thoughts…….
When done right, globalization can lift large numbers of
people out of poverty.
Outsourcing done right: offer workers a good wage and
opportunity that would not otherwise be available in their
country.

The best companies will collaborate and use outsourcing
not to shrink their workforce, but for growth, and allow the
company to become more efficient and provide a better
service.
In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity.
Development is a voluntary process.
Failed states are breeding grounds for opposition to
progression.

  • 20. Thoughts……. When done right, globalization can lift large numbers of people out of poverty. Outsourcing done right: offer workers a good wage and opportunity that would not otherwise be available in their country. The best companies will collaborate and use outsourcing not to shrink their workforce, but for growth, and allow the company to become more efficient and provide a better service. In the middle of difficulty lies opportunity. Development is a voluntary process. Failed states are breeding grounds for opposition to progression.

Notas do Editor

  1. Author uses the term flat to describe the global community. Flatteners, that will be reviewed next, have enabled or forced the world to be flat- meaning, the world is no longer a large global world, but more of a flattened small communityThe main thesis of this book states: the wealth of today is in knowledge and brainpower- and it is very competitive world out there- If America wishes to be the leader of the future- we must change socially, culturally, politically and even economically.
  2. The author describes several scenes in this book that set the stage for his many ideas-Going golfing- sees AOL, IBM, and a Microsoft BuildingSees Pizza Hut billboards Goes into a business meetingLucent phonesNice computersMicrosoft
  3. And he thought to himself-Wow, these things are the staples in every city….New York..?LA..?But, he was not in America- he was in India. Then he thought to himself-Why is India taking all of our jobs? This is the fuel that drove this book into existence
  4. The author states there are three eras of globalizationGlobalization 1.0 …………………Size of the world: Large to MediumGlobalization 2.0………………..This period was really fueled by PCsThe world went from Medium to SmallGlobalization 3.0………………………..Basically everyone has a PCFiber optic cable which really enables a lot of our technological advancementsWorkflow softwareThe world is now Small to TinyHere is also where we see individuals becoming empowered with knowledgeBob Schieffer’s example of a tiny, yet global world. Journalist at back door to interview him- identified as a reporter from a website.Journalist took the interview on a weird deviceAsked for a picture- took it with a cellphoneNext morning Schieffer went online & looked up the interviewThere it was with 300 comments!!!Now go into the flatteners
  5. Flattener #1 …………………. From this event to the mid 90s- a huge advancement in personal empowerment emerged
  6. Flattener #2 : New Connectivity The commercial web browser brought the ability to browse the internet- instead of knowing exactly how and where to goThis also gave power to retrieve documents and pages stored in sitesModem was a big part of this obviouslyHTML emerges as an easy coding systemURL- gives each web page its unique location HTTP set of rules that permitted documents to be linked together on computers across the internet EFFECT:Well, this brought internet to the massesLook at this stat………………..As you can imagine, this brought new demandsThe book states that the relative adoption was questionable at first- It was predicted that computers and all of this technology would be too complex- people wouldn’t change their habits [by getting PC & modem] but just the opposite occurred– People will change. As long as they have a strong reason to do so
  7. I think here is a good illustration of this flattenerFirst- you and computerNext – you, computer, and a forming networkNow- this has become global. Fueled global communication.
  8. Author states this is a quieter revolution…………………………………………..Work really started flowing by the mid 1990sCombination of PC & email in companies replaced the slip of paper having to be carried from one place to the next --Reminds me of the story shared with about the airline company and the conveyer beltCould you call these the dominant design JPEG.. ?
  9. Uploading is the opposite of downloadingInstead of receiving information- its being sent out …………………………………
  10. Here is where things get interesting…Outsourcing………………………..Shows how India was prepared- when this “problem” popped up…. They were prepared
  11. Off shoring………………….The author uses China as a good example …………………Race between China and the European and Western CountriesFocusing on educating the young in math, science, and computer skills [required for flat world]Also mentions that 90% of offshore products is sold to foreign consumersSo it really stimulates American exports
  12. Supply Chaining is, as he described ………………..Good example he used was Wal-MartWitnessed the process, which he calls “the show”Wal mart trucks come in and unload on this huge dock- all from suppliersAll huge boxes all go into this feeder– conveyer belt- then go into one huge lineElectric eye reads the coding Rivers partElectric arms pick up particular orders- shipped to individual storesOnto the shelfWhen the consumer takes it, it gets scanned at checkout, it signals across the network and the process is fed into the chainThis example is global
  13. ……………….Third party manager for logisticsRequires intimate and extensive collaboration
  14. Informing ………….These search engines enable us to get a hold of so much-Think of it, you Google yourself, people you meet, places you are going to -TiVo is also a form of Informing -Yahoo Groups- another example --based on a subject
  15. Flattener 10… very familiar……………………………………Makes uploading easier & biggerEnhances outsourcing by enriching communications Enhancing supply chains- connections is real time between suppliers, manufactures, stores, etc.
  16. The author reviews the triple convergenceThree junctionsNumber 1…………………………………Success for countries depends upon:Infrastructure to connect with this flat world platformEducation: more citizens participatingGovernance to get the best out of this platform and cushion the worse side effects Number 2……………….. Here you have multiple expertise…………..horizontal organization is to extract more intelligence from each person/contributor
  17. Basically……………. The IT revolution is just the prologue to the main eventWho knows, maybe this all of the flatteners will be called “Flattener 1” in the futureAmerica will change in major ways- we have to -India has a society that thrives on and encourages education -People from India don’t have to come to America for these opportunities now, they can stay in India -India's middle class is very educated: more middle class citizens go to college than any other country Basically it comes down to business is changing.. This is good. We can make it good. Every situation is neutral- its how you react to it that makes it positive or negative.
  18. The UntouchablesHe reviews who is safe from this “mass movement” There are three main categories ……………………..The author offers some advice we can pass to our children and young people …………..
  19. So again, America needs to compete and prepare………………..The author states a quiet storm is brewing
  20. The author used the example of child idols between us and our competitors as an example of our differences
  21. The author makes the case for international business as a cause for peace-If you do business with someone, you avoid conflict –meaning war-War could cost not only country but business- deliver hard blows -I also thought of what if it benefited from war… Halliburton syndrome
  22. Now… here are some really great points that stuck out from the book……………….OUTSOURING: people also say- we should protect our workers, well, shouldn’t we prepare them… Isn't preparation the best protection. Offer training and educationWe cant close our borders, it would be counterproductive.Outsourcing can also be the loss of control: loss of expertise.
  23. I found this book to be very thought provokingAnd really enjoyed itI really look forward to see more advances come-see how we may prepare for our new playing field- historical time to be alive
