ABOUT SCIENCO/FAST: www.sciencofast.com; solutions@sciencofast.com
Scienco/FAST represents a genuine improvement in Type II Marine Sanitation Devices (MSDs) and Sewage Treatment Systems. Installed on some of the ‘greenest’ ships in the world, these MSDs treat wastewater from the facilities, help lessen the environmental impact of contaminants, and keeps the vessel in compliance through changing regulations, including graywater discharges from commercial vessels:
• MarineFAST® Marine Sanitation Device LX-Series: Flow: 100-800 GPD (378-3026 LPD) | 1-44 crew
• MarineFAST® Marine Sanitation Device M- and MX-Series: Flow: 200-1500 GPD (800-5700 LPD) | 1-78 crew
• MarineFAST® Marine Sanitation Device DV-Series: Flow: 990-20000+ GPD (3700-75700+ LPD) | 1-2000+ crew
The MarineFAST® technology utilizes a unique hybrid method of fixed and submerged treatment processes to both effectively treat wastewater and provide a system for management of biosolids. The treated effluent disinfection methods involve chlorination, chlorination/dechlorination, and now peracetic acid. Scienco/FAST has been awarded USCG and Transport Canada certifications for MARPOL configuration – even with third-party testing, certifications, AND decades of proven field data with a 30 to 40+ year life span of the system, FAST® systems are fully approved by EPA for the treatment and disinfection of sewage effluent.
The FAST® process to handle the wide variations in loading typical of service and treats any combination of sewage, including: conventional and vacuum toilets, laundry, garbage disposals and showers. The MarineFAST MSD and HS-MSD® systems are inherently self-regulating, with no adjustments required. MarineFAST® BioSolids Management System (BMS) is an optional device that permits more sludge storage capacity for longer periods out at sea. Surge loads at change of watch and temporary changes do not adversely affect effluent quality; and, the performance of the MarineFAST system is not dependent on the skill of an operator.
Scienco/FAST recently was awarded the "2015 Innovation in Marine Environmental Technology" Offshore Excellence Award and named a finalist in Innovation Category for the Lloyd's List 2016 North American Maritime Awards.

4. MARINE SANITATION &
WASTEWATER TREATMENT SYSTEMS
MarineFAST® Systems are commonly referred to as a Type II
(two) MSD biological (aerobic digestion) treatment system.
The Type II MSD systems are powerful, flow-through discharge
devices and tested in conditions described in 33 CFR 159.121.
MarineFAST® Marine Sewage Treatment Marine and offshore
sewage treatment systems built to handle extreme
environments. All MarineFAST® (Fixed Activated Sludge
Treatment) units are fully certified by US Coast Guard under
U.S. and IMO regulations.
The MarineFAST® is a fixed film aerobic wastewater treatment
system designed for the space and treatment standards of a
maritime vessel, as either a new, complete system or a way to
retrofit an existing system.
5. DIFFERENT REGULATIONS
• IN MOST CASES, ONLY HUMAN WASTE AND GALLEY
WASTE ARE DEFINED AS “SEWAGE” AND ARE
REGULATED.
• DISINFECTION OF EFFLUENT IS REQUIRED PRIOR TO
DISCHARGE.
• CERTIFICATION OF UNITS UNDER MARINE
REGULATIONS IS REQUIRED.
• EFFLUENT REQUIREMENTS CAN VARY
CONSIDERABLY DEPENDING UPON LOCAL
REGULATIONS.
6. DIFFERENT EQUIPMENT
• ALMOST ALL UNITS ARE FURNISHED WITH TANKS
AND THESE ARE WATERTIGHT.
• PUMPS ARE NORMALLY REQUIRED TO DISCHARGE
EFFLUENT.
• DESIGN FOR AMBIENT TEMPERATURE UP TO 50° C.,
ROLLING AND PITCHING SHIP, MARINE VIBRATION
AND SEAWATER CORROSION.
7. SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT PROCESS
• RAW SEWAGE ENTERS MEDIA TANK WITH NO
PRETREATMENT.
• SEWAGE ENTERS ABOVE THE WATERLINE.
• MEDIA TANKS INCORPORATE AIR SCOUR AT THE
BOTTOM TO “SELF-CLEAN” BIO-GROWTH FROM THE
MEDIA, BREAK UP SLUDGE BELOW THE MEDIA AND
KEEP SLUDGE IN SUSPENSION DURING PUMP-OUT.
8. BACKGROUND
• FIRST SUCCESSFUL PROTOTYPE ABOARD RIVER TOWBOAT IN
1969.
• COMMERCIAL SALES STARTED IN 1973.
• CERTIFIED BY US COAST GUARD IN 1975.
• CERTIFIED BY CANADA IN 1978.
• OVER 2,000 UNITS ON VESSELS AND OFFSHORE PLATFORMS.
• LARGEST SINGLE UNIT 3,000 PERSONS BUILT INTO SHIP’S TANKS.
• SMALLEST UNIT 6 PERSONS.
• STANDARD UNITS AVAILABLE FOR CREW OF 6 TO 1000 PEOPLE.
9. ADVANTAGES
• MEETS THE STRICTEST REGULATIONS IN FORCE WORLDWIDE
WITH STANDARD EQUIPMENT.
• NO ADJUSTMENTS NEEDED OR REQUIRED.
• PROPER OPERATION DOES NOT DEPEND UPON THE SKILL OF
THE OPERATOR.
• EQUIPMENT AND CONTROLS ARE SIMPLE AND CAN BE
SERVICED BY CREW.
• SUPERIOR CONSTRUCTION, PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION
MACHINERY AND CONTROLS MEAN LONG SERVICE LIFE WITH
FEW PROBLEMS.
• QUALIFIED SERVICE AVAILABLE WORLDWIDE.
10. MarineFAST®
HOWIT WORKS:
1. Sewage enters the system. No need for a macerator or bar screen to clean or repair.
2. Quiet, compact BLOWER provides air through the piping system that connects to the airlift inside the media tank.
3. Aeration through the AIRLIFT circulates and aerates the tank contents to promote microorganisms present in sewage to grow and
become fixed on Media to digest organic material. Media does not require replacement or cleaning.
4. From center line SPILLOVER pipe, treated effluent passes through TABLET CHLORINATOR and dissolves chlorine tablet proportional
to the flow rate. Other disinfection methods are available.
5. Sized for peak flow periods, the Chlorine Contact Tank or WETWELL provides the chlorine enough time to disinfect treated effluent prior
to discharge. Automatic Float Switches (shown in yellow) located in the center line of the tank gauge water levels for on/off operation.
6. A submerged EFFLUENT PUMP in the wetwell transfers the treated effluent to discharge out of the tank. Other transfer options
available.

In general during a presentation you want to tell 'em what you're gonna tell'em, tell 'em, then tell'em what you told 'em. Be positive, excited, lots of movement, DO NOT mention or dwell on negatives or possible problems that MIGHT come up.
During this presentation we will cover possible applicatons for FAST. One of the hallmarks of FAST systems is their ability to reduce total nitrogen, so we will explain how total nitrogen reduction is obtained in any biological treatment environment. We will then run through the two major treatment processes that exist today, which will help to explain how FAST works , and then look at some actual projects that have used FAST technology.
