About the brand
• This case study pertains to one of the top 10 sugar complexes in
India.
• It is one of the largest producers of alcohol and a pioneering
manufacturer of alcohol-based chemicals in India.
• It manufactures more than 20 products from renewable resources
such as:

Challenges
• The distillery depended on rainwater for their water needs.
• Due to inconsistency in rains, they were facing acute water
shortage.
• It affected production of alcohol as the distillery couldn’t be
operated for the complete season.

A.T.E.’s approach
• A.T.E. compiled the entire water balance.
• A.T.E. identified areas where trade streams can be
appropriately treated and recycled for intended use.
• A total of 3.9 MLD of condensates from the sugar and
distillery plants and cooling tower blow-down were identified
for treatment and recycle needs.

• A 3.9 MLD wastewater treatment plant was designed,
installed and commissioned by A.T.E., which comprised of:
• Anaerobic Hybrid Reactor (AHR)
• Aerobic reactor
• Clarification and filtration

Result
• 98% degradation in BOD and COD was achieved.
• Treated water BOD was 30 ppm and COD was 100 ppm.
• 1.2 MLD of treated condensate was recycled back to the
distillation process.
• The distillery operated for 70 additional days in the season leading
to a 26% hike in productivity.
• The remaining treated water was recycled to the cooling tower as
make-up water and for other needs.
• Fresh water intake was reduced by 3 MLD.
