What is VRF systems?
• Variable refrigerant flow vary the flow of refrigerant to
indoor units based on demand. There are 2 types of VRF
system, heat pump and heat recovery system.
5. What is VRF Heat pump ?
• VRF heat pump provide heating or cooling but not
simultaneous heating and cooling

6. What is VRF heat recovery?
• VRF heat recovery can operate simultaneous in
heating or cooling mode.

16. IV. Load Calculation
1. Estimate Method
Q = S . R
• Q: Total heat load [Btu.h-1]or [W]
• S: room area [m2]
• R: The rate of cooling [Btu.h-1.m-2]
Calculation total heating load for TKR1 “ Reception
room’’ which has S = 62.4 m2
• R = 900 Btu.h-1.m-2
Thus, Q = 56160 Btu.h−1 =16.45kW
16
17. Another room calculate by Estimate method
Items Type of Room
AREA Ratio Cooling Capacity

1 Conference Hall 265.45 1200 93.36 318540
2 Break Room 49.07 750 10.78 36802
3 Coffee Shop 73.6 1300 28.04 95680
4 Financial Office 98.14 850 24.48 83419
5 Hall 35.5 700 7.28 24850
6 Office 56.5 850 14.07 48025

17
18. IV. Load Calculation
2. Manual Method
The Manual Method is the method used to calculate the cooling load
of the building space with minimum errors.
Total heating load:
QT = QS + QL [W]
oTotal sensitive loads
QS = QStr+ QSRm+QSRv+QSoc+QSecl+QSequip
oTotal latent loads
QL= QLr+ QLoc+QLequip
18
19. IV.Load Calculation
Calculation heating load for TKR1 “ Reception Area’’
oTotal sensitive loads
QS = 14445.26 W
oTotal latent loads
QL = 1197.58W
Total heating load:
QT= 14445.26 W + 1197.58W = 15642.84 W = 15.64 kW
19
20. IV.Load Calculation
Verify the cooling capacity coefficient R [Btu/h.m2]:
• Manul method: R= 53367Btu.h−1 / 62.4 m2 = 855 Btu.h−1
• Estimate method: R = 900 Btu.h−1
From the calculation above by manual method, we see that
error of cooling rate approximate 5 % compared to
estimation method
20
21. V. Selection
1. Selection indoor unit
The total cooling load required is 109.8 kW
21(Hiong, 2016-2017)
22. V. Selection
The characteristic of outdoor unit model U-40ME2R8
are:
• Cooling capacity 113 kW
• Using with power supply 400/415 V/3-phase/50 Hz
• Electrical rating for cooling option: 57.3 A
• Refrigerant amount at shipment: 22.0 kg
• Air flowrate: 48600 m3 h-1
22
23. V. Selection
2. Selection indoor unit
For Conference Hall of TKR1:
The requirement of cooling load is 93.36 kW.
Catalogue of model mid static duct E1 type chosen that
Its cooling capacity from 7.3 kW to 28 kW.
E1 type is a kind of saving energy, the power input
45% less (compared to H1 type)
4 of S-224ME1E5 were chosen: Cooling capacity 4 ×
22.4kW = 89.6kW
23
29. VII. Testing and Commissioning
Before we start operation VRF, we have to:
1. Test refrigerant pipe
2. Adding refrigerant
3. Check at main power on
4. Testing and commissioning
29
30. 30
1. Test refrigerant pipe
a. Check for any leakage in the
refrigerant piping
b. Perform vacuum drying to
remove all moisture
31. • Keeping the valve of the outdoor
unit closed
• If the specified amount of
refrigerant cannot be charged, fully
open the valves of the outdoor unit
at liquid and gas sides, operate the
air conditioner in COOL mode
31
2. Adding refrigerant
32. Check on the outdoor unit
Check on the setting indoor unit
32
3. Check at main power on
a. Check ON the rotary switches of
outdoor unit
b. Check ON the setting indoor unit
33. • Incoming supply for outdoor phrase sequence for 3 phases,
Incoming Voltage (380~415V).
• Incoming voltage for Indoor 220~240V and ensure power supply all
Indoor unit is turn "ON".
• Once all the setting is set and check, then start addressing the system
by short-circuit pin CN-30

36. VIII. Conclusion
• The calculation cooling load by estimation and manual
seem a litter bit difference value. The selection of the
systems that suitable for reception area and conference
hall is outdoor unit model U-40ME2R8 which maximum
cooling capacity is 113 kW.
• To get the best result of VRF system, we have to
understand about plan and condition for installation of
indoor unit, outdoor unit, air duct, copper pipe, and
drainage water pipe.
• VRF testing and commissioning is a part which we use
the method statement to carry on indoor unit, outdoor unit
operation after installation.
