Evaluation Question 3
1. What did you learn from your
audience feedback?
Evaluation question 3
2. Audience feedback
Audience feedback is extremely useful for
knowing whether or not you hit the mark in
terms of engaging with your target audience and
also in making a compelling production. With
this in mind I carried out interviews with
members of my target audience in order to find
out whether or not my main task and the
ancillaries were effective in the intended way.
3. The main task
The main task was to create a thriller
opening sequence and I think that I was
mostly successful in doing so. According to
the two interviews that I conducted, they
were able to infer the purpose of the video
and what the genre was, however one of
the interviewees was unsure on the exact
genre and referenced several including
horror and crime thriller. There were some
noticeable improvements for example in
how appropriate certain shots are
supposed to be. However the response
was overall positive for the teaser trailer.
The thought that most of the shots were
conventional to the genre, in particular the
shot in which the antagonist attacks
another character.
4. Improvements
Some of the shots were received quite
badly, for example the shot with
hostage was said to look extremely
unprofessional as the footage was
blurry and it was difficult to tell exactly
what was happening. Also the text for
the title cards was a little bit generic in
font and colour, the effect on the end
title card was received well, but the
actual text looked too generic in colour
as they were both a sharp white on a
black background. An improvement
here could be to make the font more
noticeable and to change the colour of
some of the text to make it more
visually pleasing.
5. Ancillary 1
The poster was not as well
received as the video and there
were some very noticeable
improvements to be made, for
example one person thought
that the genre of the film would
be horror just by looking at the
poster, this is quite bad as the
poster is supposed to represent
the film being advertised. There
was praise in the image selection
and it was noticeable and
interesting to look at. There was
also criticism for the actor’s
name at the top and for some of
the text in general.
6. Improvements
Improvements that could be made in response
to the feedback given on the poster could be to
give the main subject of the poster more colour
and zoom the image out a little in order to make
it so that more of his body is prominent and to
make the mask the main part but not right in
the viewers face. Also add more text for when
the film is supposedly coming and adding more
names for actors.
7. Ancillary 2
Ancillary 2 was received better in some
ways than the poster but in others it was
badly received. The main points that
were good were that it at least looked
like a magazine front cover and the text
placement and the actual wording was
convincing and the image looked good,
however the complaints came from the
fact that the colours didn’t look good and
the entire bottom half looked unfinished.
There were also complaints about the
masthead as it didn’t look conventional
of the genre as the text was too thin and
the subject didn’t overlap the masthead
which is a conventional aspect for
magazine front covers of many genres
including film.
8. Improvements
Improvements to the poster would be to edit
the masthead to make the text thicker and more
prominent, possible a bolder colour as opposed
to a simple white text. Also to edit the image so
that it overlaps the masthead and is therefore
more conventional of magazine front covers.
Edit the lower half of the front cover so that the
colours match up and it looks more professional
and also edit the text on the sides so that it is
more conventional.
9. Conclusion
In conclusion I think that learned some important
things from my audience feedback, the most
important being that the audience were able to tell
that the teaser was indeed a teaser and that the
combination of the ancillaries and the teaser itself
was successful in doing wat their purpose is: to
market the film. However there negative points for
all three posters and in evaluation I think that I have
outlined the main areas in which I can make
improvements in order to make the three tasks
more effective in their intended use.
