2. What is Blue Economy?
• GUNTER Pauli designed the blue economy
concept, which came out of the 2012 Rio+20
Conference.
• In Bangladesh, discussions on blue economy
started after the settlement of maritime
boundary delimitation dispute with Myanmar
and India.

3. What is Blue Economy?
• The concept of blue economy in our country
can be developed in emerging sectors such as
shipping and port facilities, seaborne trade,
fisheries, coastal tourism, aquaculture,
renewable blue energy, submarine mining,
renewable energy -- wind, wave, tidal etc.

• Food Security: Bangladesh gain more than 118000
square km sea area that increase food security level of
Bangladesh. According to some experts about 475
species fish are available in the bay. Annually 6.6
million tonnes of fish are caught, of which very small
portion are exploited by our fishermen.
• Energy Sector: This renewable energy source could
help diversify our energy portfolios and secure higher
levels of energy security.

• Transportation:-80 percent of global trade by
volume, and over 70 percent by value, is
carried by sea. For developing countries, on a
national basis, these percentages are typically
higher. Shipping is the safest, most secure,
most efficient and most environmentally
sound means of bulk transportation.
Bangladesh have a great opportunity of sea
transportation for its geo-strategic position.

• Tourism- Marine and coastal tourism is of key
importance to many developing countries like
Bangladesh. Tourism is a major global industry; in
2012 international tourist arrivals increased by
4% despite the global economic crisis and
constituted 9% of Global GDP. In 2012 tourism
supported 9% of global jobs and generated US$
1.3 trillion or 6% of the world’s export earnings.
International tourism has grown from 25 million
in 1950 to 1,035 million in 2012.

Shipbuilding- Finally, the shipbuilding industry
contributes to this function by providing the
necessary equipment, which does not only cover
ships but also the marine equipment in which
our own industries can play an important role.
There are more than 300 shipyards and
workshops in Bangladesh.

9. Challenges for Bangladesh
• The main challenges for Bangladesh to gain
from Blue economy are taking proper steps
and framework for sustainable use of
resources and proper research. Eventually
Bangladesh do not having adequate
knowledge , skilled manpower, equipment, for
research in the deep sea. So it is high time to
take proper steps to reduce such problem.

• It is a great opportunity for Bangladesh to
solve the main Economical problem like
unemployment, shortage of energy, lower
GDP by proper using our Blue resources.
