WHAT IS THE NCLEX-RN?
WHAT IS THE NCLEX-RN?
 NCLEX stands for “National Council
Licensure Examination.”
 The NCLEX-RN is a standardized test to
measure your competency as an entry-level
registered nurse.
 You are qualified to sit for the exam after
you complete a nursing program.
 Passing the NCLEX-RN is required in order
to obtain your RN license.

THE STEPS
Get started with this process about 6 months before
your target date for taking the exam:
1. Submit your application for licensure to the board
of nursing in the state you wish to be licensed.
2. Register to take the NCLEX-RN with Pearson
VUE.
3. Receive your eligibility letter from your board of
nursing and your Authorization to Test (ATT) from
Pearson VUE.
4. Schedule your test date. Test dates are available
all year.
Note: You will be eligible to sit for the exam for one
year. Your eligibility timeframe will be printed on your
ATT letter.
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THE EXAM?
COST OF THE NCLEX-RN AND LICENSURE
 The cost of the exam is $200.
 There is an additional international scheduling
fee of $150.
 Licensure fees vary based on state.
 You can pay with check, cashier’s check or
money order by mail or credit card online or on
the phone.
 You will receive a postcard within two weeks of
submitting your registration and fees. This is not
your ATT.

THE BASICS
 The NCLEX-RN is computer-adaptive, meaning the
computer selects future questions based on your
previous answers.
 Everyone answers a minimum of 75 questions to a
maximum of 265 questions, with 15 experimental
questions that do not count against you.
 You have a maximum of 6 hours to complete the
exam.
 Questions fall into four categories (client needs):
 Safe and Effective Care Environment
 Health Promotion and Maintenance
 Psychosocial Integrity
 Physiological Integrity

Safe and Effective Care Environment
 Includes 2 concepts:
 Management and Care
 Safety and Infection Control
 Management and Care accounts for 17% to 23% of
the questions on the exam.
 Safety and Infection Control makes up 9% to 15% of
the exam.
Health Promotion and Maintenance
 Health Promotion and Maintenance makes up 6% to
12% of the exam.
 The section includes the following topics:
 Aging Process
 Ante/Intra/Postpartum and Newborn
 Developmental Stages and Transitions
 And more…

Psychosocial Integrity
 Psychosocial Integrity makes up 6% to 12% of the
exam.
 The section includes the following topics:
 Coping Mechanisms
 Grief and Loss
 Mental Health Concepts
 Spiritual Influence on Health
 And more…
Physiological Integrity
 Includes 4 concepts:
 Basic Care and Comfort accounts for 6% to 12% of the
exam.
 Pharmacological and Parenteral Therapies makes up 12%
to 18% of the exam.
 Reduction of Risk Potential is 9% to 15% of the exam.
 Physiological Adaptation accounts for 11% to 17% of the
exam.

THE BASICS
 When you arrive at the testing center:
 You will provide a palm vein scan, digital
signature and finger print.
 Your photo will be taken.
 You must present your Authorization to Test
(ATT).
 You will need to supply your ID.
 No personal items will allowed in the testing
center.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT ON EXAM DAY?
FINISHING THE EXAM
 The exam ends when one of the
following occurs:
 You have shown competency and
answered at least 75 questions.
 You have shown lack of competency and
answered at least 75 questions.
 You have answered 265 questions.
 You have been taking the exam for 6
hours.

THE BASICS
 The exam is pass/fail.
 You will be notified by your state
board of nursing 2 to 4 weeks after
taking the exam whether or not you
passed.
 If you fail, you will receive an
evaluation of your test performance
(diagnostic profile).

RETAKING THE EXAM
 If you fail, do not give up.
 Study your diagnostic profile
carefully to determine where you’re
struggling.
 You may retake the exam 45 days
after you first sat for it.
