2. Teenage
yearsare all about
encountering new experiences,
taking risks, making mistakes,
and, most of all, moving toward
the future. Even when adoles-
cence brings embarrassment,
pain, or heartbreak—and it
usually does—you pick yourself
up and keep going. As the saying
goes, you live—and you learn.
But what happens when an
experience is so painful and so
humiliating that one cannot
move beyond it? What happens
when people get stuck?
The New Electric Ballroom brings
you into the world of three adult
sisters who live in a fishing town
in Ireland. Breda and Clara are
in their sixties, but they remain
fixated on an encounter that took
place decades ago—an encounter
with their teen idol, a rock and
roll singer at the local dance hall,
called the New Electric Ballroom.
Assisted by younger sister Ada,
they relive their experience in
a daily ritual complete with the
clothes and makeup from their
youth—and they haven’t been
able to leave the Ballroom
ever since.
Written like a poem that unfolds
onstage, this dark comedy from
Irish playwright Enda Walsh
draws the audience into the lives
of three sisters holding onto a
past that prevents
them from escaping
into their future.
“Beyond the lyricism
associated with all
of the great Irish
writers, there is a nexus Walsh
creates with language, character,
and theatrical convention that is
vital, new, and attention-getting,”
says Gloucester Stage Interim
Artistic Director Robert Walsh.
He is directing the production,
which runs from July 23 through
August 15.
One of the pivotal characters in
the play is Patsy, a fishmonger
who ends up offering the sisters
more than just the catch of the
day. For Breda and Clara, he
offers a revelation that may be
the one thing that changes their
surreal routine. For Ada, he
offers the promise of escape from
an existence mired in the past.
The New Electric Ballroom is
tailor-made for Gloucester Stage’s
powerful cast, which includes
Gloucester Stage alumni Nancy
E. Carroll, Derry Woodhouse,
Adrianne Krstansky as well as
newcomer Marya Lowry.
Enda Walsh, the playwright,
wrote the book and won the Tony
Award for the hit musical Once.
His work has also appeared on
film. He and film director Steve
McQueen wrote the screenplay
for Hunger (2008), which tells
the story of the final days of IRA
hunger striker Bobby Sands. The
film earned more than 40 awards.
In The New Electric Ballroom,
Walsh’s wistful portrait is one
all of us experience when we
ponder dreams of what might
have been, given different
circumstances. His sisters must
come together to support one
another through the disappoint-
ment of lost dreams and the hope
and expectation of dreams to
come. Come savor the language,
the joy, and the heartache in
this magical tale. Gs

“This is superbly raw and totally truthful theatre
featuring lyrical language and quirky characters.
It is provocative, funny, and sad.” Tom Williams
