5. Blackle is a website powered by Google and created by Heap Media, which aims to
save energy by displaying a black background and using grayish-white font color
for search results. Blackle claims having saved over 4 MWh of electrical energy up
to November 2013, a claim currently under dispute. For comparison, the average
USA household consumes 11 MWh of electrical energy per year.

23. Green initiatives: DELL
On June 5, 2007, Dell set a goal of becoming the greenest technology company on Earth for
the long term. The company launched a zero-carbon initiative that includes:
1. Reducing Dell's carbon intensity by 15 percent by 2012
2. Requiring primary suppliers to report carbon emissions data during quarterly business
reviews
3. Expanding the company's carbon-offsetting program, "Plant a Tree for Me"
24. Green initiatives: DELL
Dell became the first company in the information technology industry to
establish a product-recycling goal (in 2004) and completed the
implementation of its global consumer recycling-program in 2006.
On February 6, 2007, the National Recycling Coalition awarded Dell its
"Recycling Works" award for efforts to promote producer responsibility.
On July 19, 2007, Dell announced that it had exceeded targets in working
to achieve a multi-year goal of recovering 275 million pounds of
computer equipment by 2009.
The company reported the recovery of 78 million pounds (nearly 40,000
tons) of IT equipment from customers in 2006, a 93-percent increase over
2005; and 12.4% of the equipment Dell sold seven years earlier.

28. In April 2008, McDonald's announced that 11 of its Sheffield, England
restaurants have been using a biomass trial that had cut its waste and
carbon footprint by half in the area. In this trial, wastes from the
restaurants were collected by Veolia Environmental Services, and were
used to produce energy at a power plant. McDonald's plans to expand
this project, although the lack of biomass power plants in the United
States will prevent this plan from becoming a national standard anytime
soon. In addition, in Europe, McDonald's has been recycling vegetable
by converting it to fuel for its diesel trucks.

36. Implementing Green supply chain
properly will drive real business value
• Green supply chain concepts manage environmental impacts where they occur—ideally before
they occur.
• Best practices focus on the business, not social, value that green supply chain management
creates.
– Align green supply chain goals with business goals
– Evaluate the supply chain as a single life cycle system
– Use environmental analysis as a catalyst for innovation
– Focus on source reduction to reduce waste
• Successful implementation requires raising the profile and perceived value of environmental
projects.
– Articulate project value in terms of business value
– Create the project to work within the organizational culture
– Use effective tools (e.g., GreenSCOR) to enable project execution
