DIGITAL
BEAUTY:
Beauty and personal care brands
increasingly compete on digital experience
enhancers instead of formulation or
packaging. The mobile is the new “beauty
brush”.
Digitalizing beauty experiences by having
customers try and buy products virtually is
evolving all parts of the customer journey.
Touch points of consumers with the brands
are created via chatbots, simulation apps
and digital content in stores.
Digitalization is changing customer
journeys and their experiences with beauty
items and brands.

their profile and beauty preferences in a short
quiz. The gathered information is then used to
personalize the platform’s services to them.
The first incentive to engage with the bot is a
gift card. Once a quiz is done, the users can dive
deeper into Sephora’s beauty content on the
platform which is customized to their beauty
needs.

TECH
BOOSTERS:
Tech Boosters or “Beauty Hacking” satisfy
the needs of a results-oriented society that
wants the best results in the shortest time
possible.
Devices like microcurrent-induced facial
pads, pen-shaped skincare gadgets and sonic
cleansing brushes use technologies to more
efficiently use your cosmetics and skincare
products.
Technology is increasingly used to boost
the performance and effectiveness of
existing products.

TECH BOOSTERS
Feeligreen
DermoPatch
Explore the Sign
French startup Feeligreen developed a skin
patch that uses microcurrent technology to
treat signs of aging by diffusing beauty products
into the skin.
Topical medication or normal beauty products
are applied to the patches that are powered by
a tiny electronic module. The microcurrent tech
boosts the diffusion of the products into the
skin and makes the treatments more effective.

Talika
Skincare Booster
Explore the Sign
Talika is a skincare booster that promises to
enhance the look of the skin if it suffers from
acne, pimples or blackheads.
The gadget is pen-shaped and hand-held and
uses light technology discovered by NASA.
Visible light was revealed to help revitalize cell
metabolism and as a result prevents acne-
causing bacterial activity and reduces
inflammation. This way, the gadget boosts the
skin’s health and provides an even skin tone.

Clarisonic
Sonic Cleansing Brush
Explore the Sign
Clarisonic was one of the first to start the sonic
skincare wave. Its skin cleansing brushes use a
micro-massage motion that does more than
300 movements per second.
This method efficiently extracts impurities from
the skin and is six times more effective than just
using hands to clean the face. It is used with a
usual facial cleanser.
Other brands have followed Clarisonic’s
example and there is now a variety of similar
cleansing brushes on the market.

BEAUTY
WEARABLES:
Smart technology and beauty wearables
offer consumers greater control over their
individual beauty needs.
Gadgets and wearables in the beauty sector
can track the individual’s state of the skin
and give specific and customized
recommendations of how to improve it.
By measuring bio data, the devices are able
to educate the user about the hydration level
of their skin, if there is need for UV
protection and how their environment
effects their skin’s condition. There is also a
patent for a wearable that is not focusing on
the skin, but instead acts as a digital
deodorant.
Smart items offer individuality by
measuring bio data and giving customised
recommendations.

Wired Beauty
MAPO: High-Tech 3D Beauty Mask
Explore the Sign
Peoples’ skins differ due to a wide variety of
reasons: weather, skin types, hormones and
hydration levels can all influence the skin which
makes it difficult to find the right routine
without constantly consulting with a
dermatologist.
Wired Beauty has developed a solution for this:
the MAPO, a personalized beauty mask that
scans the skin with sensors and then informs
users of their skin condition and tips via a
smartphone app.

It contains photosensitive blue dye that
changes its color when exposed to ultraviolet
light.
Users can take a picture with the corresponding

WAY is a personal skincare monitor that
analyzes the user’s skin condition.
The device provides on-demand skin health
metrics and personalized skincare tips. It brings
big data to skincare through sensors that
measure the skin’s condition and ambient
environment, like temperature and humidity.
The data is transferred to the user’s
smartphone via Bluetooth and is the basis for
recommendations and remedies, like drinking
more water and applying sunscreen.

Digital Deodorant
Explore the Sign
Google was awarded a patent for a “digital
deodorant” in 2015.
The “deodorant” is a tiny wearable fan that uses
odor-sensing technology that detects the user’s
smell and then emits a spray of deodorant.
The user is also alerted via social media and
even offered an alternative GPS route to avoid
running into friends.
However, there is no word yet on whether
Google will pursue this idea to market.

INGESTIBLE
BEAUTY:
While some beauty rituals are pleasant and
even fun, others can be annoying and too
time-consuming.
That’s why great strides are being made to
produce digestible forms of fixes, cures and
protection, following the principle “if it’s not
pleasant it should at least be fast".
Soon, beauty might not be achieved from
outside applications but come truly from the
inside.
Instead of repeatedly coloring your hair or
applying sunscreen a couple of times a day,
research is working on providing ingestible
remedies, like pills and infused waters.
Research is leading to ingestible products
that make keeping up with beauty routines
easier and faster.

development of a pill that will prevent grey hair

Tropical Fern and Algae as UV Protection
Explore the Sign
Researchers are looking into new ways to
protect peoples’ skins from harmful exposure to
UV radiation.
Focus for one potential oral sunscreen lies on a
tropical fern (Polypodium leucotoms) that has
been used in primitive medicine in South
America and protects the skin with its
antioxidant properties.
Another possible ingredient for ingestible
sunscreen could be symbiotic algae, which is
currently being researched as well.
