uniform and black hijab, she can easily blend in with
other Malaysian students. She was born in Malaysia,
but the authorities want her to leave. Her parents are
Filipino immigrants working on construction sites in
Lahad Datu town in Sabah – Malaysia’s easternmost
state, on the island of Borneo.Karisma is one of more
than 100,000 children in the country who do not have
proper documents.”A few of them have birth certificates
but even the ones with birth certificates will not have
access to government schooling here,” says Torben
Venning, a Danish national who works with children of
immigrants in Sabah.

workers are not allowed to have families. It’s one of the
ways the government tries to limit the number of
immigrants. So Karisma can only get an education
through the learning centre set up by Mr Venning and
his wife Rosalyn’s charity called PKPKM Sabah.She is
four grades behind her Malaysian peers but still seems
affectionate towards her birth place.

The Lok Kawi Wildlife Park is run by Sabah Wildlife Department under the Ministry of Tourism,
Culture and Environment. The park covers about 280 acres of land which includes the Botanical
Site managed by Sabah Forestry Department and the Zoological Site. This family-oriented park
features exotic and endangered species such as the Sumatran rhinoceros, the Proboscis monkeys,
the Malayan tigers, the Orang Utan, the Borneo Pygmy elephants and colourful hornbill birds.
On the Botanical side, visitors can walk the 1.4 km trail that leads to the Herbal and Ginger
Garden to catch a glimpse of the ever famous pitcher plant (nepenthes sp) and an opportunity
to examine some rare plant species up close. Some dipterocarp trees can also be found in this area.

Pick up from hotel lobby in the morning and depart for your tour to Lok Kawi Zoo. En route,
visit Dongonggon town to experience our local market. Depart Dongonggon market and continue
your transfer to the Zoo. Explore the Zoo together with your guide. The visit will take

The Upside Down House Of Borneo or “Rumah Terbalik Borneo” is probably the latest tourist
attaraction in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
It started operation on 1st February 2012 and officially opened on 10th March 2012 by Minister
of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Masidi Manjun. The house which is literally upside down
is said to be the first in South East Asia and has been officially included in the Malaysia
Guinness Book of Records.
