I’m Debbie Donaldson, author of the book Superpowers Activated.
A few years ago I was struggling with insomnia. Even after
following the recommendations of my doctor and friends,
(meditation, regular sleep schedule, no caffeine or heavy meals
before bed) I was still struggling to fall asleep and stay asleep.
My brain couldn’t let go of the events of the day. I found myself
tossing and turning while my brain tried resolving problems or
conflicts and it seemed to be making them worse. I would even
remember past traumatic events as if they were happening in the
present.
The insomnia was causing me to be anxious, afraid and irritable. I
felt exhausted, powerless and was losing confidence in myself. I was
constantly worried about failure at work and in my relationships.
I believe in the power of positive thinking, so I read quotes on
success from some of my favorite people in history. It helped a bit
which is why I’ve shared some of them with you.
But regular sleep didn’t come until I took this one life changing
action…
10. Just before going to bed, I began writing down a
positive experience from the day.
After several weeks, I noticed a pattern. I was writing a single
word and describing how someone inspired me that day.
When looking at my notes a few years later, I realized I had
written descriptions of actions that seemed to turn a person’s
strength into their Superpower. That’s when I knew I had to share
the magic I discovered with you.
Focusing my mind on these positive experiences helped me beat
insomnia. Reading what I had written later inspired me through a
painful, frightening and ultimately successful battle with cancer.
