As social media marketing gains momentum in Vietnam, marketers should embrace integration and align with agencies that can deliver integrated campaigns. That is especially true of FMCG brands, which in Vietnam have the largest marketing budgets and the greatest interest in social media. For FMCG's social media is largely a tool for amplifying integrated campaigns with a strong backbone of traditional and digital advertising.

First, a little about my background. Before moving to Vietnam in 2012, I was a vice president at the 2nd largest independent advertising agency in the U.S.I started in PR, but as digital marketing grew in importance, I because one of the agency’s social media pioneers.I created its first dedicated social media and analytics teams, and I led a $3 million/year social media account.I hope to make that experience work for THP.
I want to start this morning by talking about where social media marketing stands worldwide.
In 2014, social media is firmly entrenched as a marketing tool alongside traditional tools like advertising, PR, events and direct marketing.58% of marketers worldwide are using it, And I would venture to say that among consumer marketers like you that percentage is much higher.
Moreover, it’s GAINING importance. As traditional advertising has grown more expensive and less effective, social media has risen to take its place. For the past three years, more than 20% of marketers worldwide have reported that social media’s importance is growing within their overall marketing mix, more than any other tactic.
But what about Vietnam? After all, Vietnam is a middle income country, and many do not even have internet access.
Well, the truth is that 35% of Vietnamese DO have internet access. And those are concentrated in the major cities. They are young, they are educated, and they have money to spend. As Vietnamese internet users go, so goes the rest of the country.Increasingly those internet users are becoming heavy users of social media. 1 in 9 Vietnamese are on Facebook. And social media is informing their purchase decisions. According to the Masso Survey, word of mouth is much more important than advertising in informing the purchase decisions of Vietnamese consumers. As it happens, spreading word of mouth is one of the things that social media is really good at.
A final trend that’s worth mentioning in Vietnam is the growth in MOBILE internet access.Vietnam has the 2nd fastest smartphone adoption rate in the world. And …
It’s not just phones. Tablet sales are growing robustly too. That makes social media strategy interesting in Vietnam. ANY social media campaign here has to consider what’s called SoLoMo: the combination of social media, location and mobile marketing. We’re going to see a great case study from Pepsi later on that used SoLoMo very effectively.
So it would seem that investing in social media would be a no brainer for THP.BUT
In the last five years, few brands have done either of those things – build a brand and encourage word of mouth – more effectively than Old Spice.Old Spice is an Proctor & Gamble brand, and they had a problem. They wanted to compete in the crowded and commoditized category of men’s body wash, but their brand was holding them back.Old Spice was seen as an old man’s brand: something grandfathers would use.
Old Spice needed to capture the imagination of young men.And their strategy for reinvigorating their brand with young men hinged on a particularly powerful group of influencers: young women. And what do young women like?
6 months after the TVC campaign, they launched their social media masterpiece.Over the course of 2 days they hired their actor to star in 180 YouTube “response” videos. The videos responded to questions and comments from actors, media figures, key social media influencers and ordinary consumers. Here is what they looked like.
36 million YouTube views in one week.A 300% increase in web traffic. And ultimately a doubling of Old Spice sales.I still use this bodywash. And Old Spice deodorant. And the fact that my grandfather was also an Old Spice fan rarely crosses my mind.So what are the takeaways lessons for THP?
Social media is a tool not a strategy. And for FMCG it is usually most effective in combination with other tactics like TVCs. Why? You audience is ephemeral. A car company might expect to have an ongoing conversation in social media with a significant percentage of its social media fans. Even if you have 10 million Facebook fans, as an FMCG brand you’re going to have to continually remind your fans to engage with you.In social media content is king. If you’re going to produce content, expend the resources to do it right. Remember: Your customers have a choice to consume your social media content or not. Unlike traditional advertising they are NOT a captive audience. Speaking of content, I want to talk about another FMCG brand that does content marketing very well. These guys might be more familiar to you. They are …
I like to think of Red Bull as a media company that happens to make an energy drink? Why? Let’s see.
As the social media era began to dawn, Red Bull had a challenge. All sorts of competitors – competitors like THP – were emerging. How could a product that tastes like cough medicine maintain its market dominance? Red Bull had to find a way to be a brand and not just a commodity. And so they did something very smart. Red Bull understands that great branding strikes a chord with a customer niche – a segment of customers who feel so much affinity for that brand that they become unpaid evangelists and ambassadors for it.In the case of Red Bull, that customer segment is adrenaline junkies. Specifically extreme sports fans. And they feed that segment with content. Lots of it.
I mean, just look at Red Bull’s website. This isn’t a website for a beverage. This is an online magazine. A really GOOD online magazine. You have to look very hard to find any information about beverages at all.And the website contains all kinds of content.
In fact, Red Bull set up a separate media company called Red Bull Media House to create content. It employs more than 400 people and exists outside marketing control. That’s the magic. That’s the secret sauce. That’s what keeps adrenaline junkies coming back to the website to consume 45 minutes of content. Because their stuff doesn’t feel like marketing. It doesn’t feel like ads. It includes:Articles and videos about sporting eventsVideos of extreme stunts like the guy they sponsored to skydive from outerspaceThey even CHARGE for some of their content. And I want to show you an example of it right now.
Well, it’s made Red Bull a brand, not a commodity. It’s created an unbreakable association between Red Bull and extreme sports. And as a result? Red Bull against all odds has retained its status as the world’s best selling energy drink with 5.2 billion cans sold annually. What are the lessons for THP? Many.
Build your brands. Find a niche and use social media to speak directly to their souls. If you find a way to do that, you will own them. They will be your faithful marketing slaves and sing your praises, without pay, from the rooftops of every city, town and village across Vietnam. You’re going to have to find a way to avoid becoming your own worst enemy. Most companies fail at content marketing because their marketing teams cannot resist the temptation to overload content with advertising messages. And even if they want to, their executive teams won’t let them. Red Bull solved the problem by giving their team total operational independence. You’ll have to find a way that suits YOUR company and culture.O.K. Enough ranting about Red Bull. I’m obviously a fan. Let’s talk about two other competitors that loom large in THP’s world.
The first is Pepsi. And I want to talk about a Pepsi campaign that should catch your interest during this holiday season.
Pepsi had a challenge. In China, Tet is its second biggest sales season, but sales had been stagnant.Pepsi’s solution? Find a way to connect with Chinese consumers during their long annual Tet journey .back to their hometowns. And to do that, like Red Bull, they also made a feature film.
The movie even included an original song and music video performed by Voice of China winners. Available for separate download of course. But what’s most important about this campaign is that it recognized the local social media reality on the ground.Remember we talked about SoLoMo? Social media? Local marketing? Mobile marketing? This campaign used all three. The videos of themselves were formatted to stream on mobile and desktop devices. But travelers without mobile internet could also watch the movie at train and bus station kiosks throughout the Tet season.Meanwhile Pepsi created an online community where travelers could share their own Tet journey problems and help one another with solutions. And while this was very much a social media program, Pepsi promoted it with local outdoor marketing in train and bus stations. The results were spectacular.
A 37% sales increase over the previous Tet.20 million internet searches for the movie$20 million in traditional PR impressions. And Pepsi even got government accolades for helping reunite 1,000 families that might not otherwise have spent the new year together.I love this case study. In fact, it sort of makes me emotional. Because it works so well in the local context. So what can THP learn?
