In this seminar we will be fostering a new more self-empowering world view on aging. How do we allow older adults to live life on their terms, make a difference and change the world? In this Seminar we identify strategies to get to the point where we're no longer defined by outdated expectations of what we should or should not do at a certain age. We want people to define us by who we are, not how old we are.

The advancing age of our British Columbia population combined with the belief that all people deserve quality of life,
has resulted in issues of aging steadily finding their way into the field of Mediation. This training will explore a number
of research initiatives that offer evidence-based knowledge used to inform practice within this growing field. The
research demonstrates what happens in Elder Mediation, what families declare works best for them, why it works and
what needs to be implemented and improved in the future. This introductory course will combine an interdisciplinary
study of the theoretical foundations of Elder Mediation along with practical skills development. It is interactive and
content will include:

® Elder mediation Issues
® The process of Elder Mediation
® Elder abuse, neglect and power, ageism
® Legal and Capacity Issues
® Code of professional conduct
® Skills training
Who should attend: Mediators, gerontologists, lawyers, physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, educators,
pastoral care workers and other health care professionals wishing to enhance their knowledge about Aging in Canada
and mediation skills in this emerging area. Sessions will be responsive to questions and issues raised by participants.

40 hours of “Specialized Mediation and Related Training” outlined as requirements to be met by applicants for the
“Qualified Mediator (Q. Med.)” designation adopted by the ADR Institute of Canada.
